W e read these lines and pause in the day's occupation. Rodgers, Chevalier, Buse come to mind. And all the others who have given their lives that our naval aviation may lead the world. True, they may never know what their great sacrifice has meant to their country and to those of their fellows they leave behind them. But we like to think that somewhere, somehow, above the skies they have flown they sometimes get together. And tell each other of the ships they've maneuvered in formation, of the rudder that jammed, of the forced landing, of the times they've bailed out, how hard it was to get old PXY-12X3 off the water—and in the name of Neptune would they ever be able to get it back again in that rough sea.

But we would like them to know that those who are left behind do not believe they died in vain. That others of their kind, their number legion, hark back to them oftentimes, that they do help much all who nobly carry on. We believe they can look down, observers of all flights, and their's is the supreme board of strategy that will bring greater knowledge of the airways to men on sea and earth, that they are ever present to help whoever's turn it may be to next cross the border so clear to them but still beyond our power of understanding.

vice "Do you want to live forever?" is the old Navy cry in time of danger. Few of us do. But we hope we may join these fliers some day having given something comparable to what they have, that our story at the last court of inquiry can be half so worthy as is theirs.

Duty, service, call it what we will. It is going on all around us in every form of life. But to those who fly above us we doff our caps, we look up to them as they zoom past overhead. And we think of their former companions, of those who have gone on, of those who are still to go. Our hearts are suddenly warmed, not only for our own, but for all who risk their lives above the ground and over the sea.

To Hutchins, the Medal of Honor. May he wear it proudly always in those get-togethers in the hereafter we know so little about. To Service itself another medal whose sheen is beyond our strength to visualize, whose beauty is greater than that of all the combined wonders of the world, whose worth is a hundredfold more precious than all the fine gold in the nation's vaults.

A caisson, a volley, taps. It comes to all who serve their country. To some early, to others late. Would that it could come to all of us as unselfishly, as serviceably, as honorably, as it has to Chevalier, Rodgers, Buse, Hutchins . . . and all the rest.

And now another squadron takes to the air. Another unavoidable collision in line of duty. Another act of heroism. But you who have gone before are there to help them over, to make it easier for them, to welcome them as they soar across to join your get-togethers. You live that other deeds of valor may be done, that Service may carry on, that man may fly a little farther, a little more safely. It is your experience, guidance, courage that helps most those who are left behind.

The New York World's Fair Flying-buttress pylons now flank entrance gates to the New York World's Fair 1939. They are a small part of the jagged skyline which already, six monrhs before the opening date on April 30, foretells the vast exposition that awaits 60,000,000 visitors next summer.

Turnstiles will not click until spring, yet within the boundaries of the 1215Vi acre site, 70 large buildings are completed or well advanced. By December every Fair srructure will be enclosed and ready for interior decorating. The landscaping schedule will be 90 per cent complete by that time. The steel skeletons of the Trylon and Perisphere have vanished beneath layers of sheathing. Constitution Mall lacks little more than the 65-foot statue of George Washington and the sparkling play of cascades and fountains.

Viewed from any angle the grounds presenr a spectacle of impressive achievement. The conclusion is inescapable that the Fair will open, without a detail lacking, on the appointed date, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the inauguration at New York of George Washington as the first President of the United States.

Examples are numerous of this giant striding toward a fixed goal. The color zones of the Fair's main exhibit area now can be identified. Special paints that have withstood lengthy weathering rests have been used on nearly a score of buildings and the intensity of hues will not be altered by frost or rain. Sranding at the Trylon and Perisphere, the Theme Center, the observer notes blue predominating on the right, merging inro purple and then red at Constitution Mall, on into orange and finally to yellow on the left. Ornamentation in gay tones and vmusual forms likewise decorates a number of buildings.

More than 100 murals are in varying stages of progress, with some 30 completed. Many are of impressive dimensions, ranging up to 250 in length and 60 feet in height. Leading mural painters in the United States and numerous artists from abroad have been commissioned for this work. They utilize a wide variety of methods and represent all schools of the art of today and tomorrow, from the conservative to the ultra-radical.

B. S. Degrees

There have been many inquiries concerning the Bachelor of Science Degree which has been awarded to the Graduates of the Naval Academy.

A check in the Superintendent's office shows that some 2900 Degrees have SHIPMATE

been issued up to October 1st. There are some 600 applications still to be filled from graduates who are in Civil life. A look into the office where this work is being done convinces one that they are being prepared and sent out as quickly as is praaicable.

Each Degree, which is on Sheepskin, has to be carefully checked both to insure that the applicant is a graduate and that the name is properly spelled. In several instances the applicant has changed his name since graduation from the Naval Academy which required further checking and correspondence. When one considers that no additional force was made available for this additional work, it is easy to understand why applications have not been filled sooner.

It is contemplated that approximately 200 Degrees will be prepared, signed by rhe Superintendent, and sent out during October. That should complete the applications now on hand through the Qass of 1920. At the estimated rate of 200 Degrees per month, the last of the present applications should be filled by December.

The Museum The Corner Srone of the new Naval Academy Museum was laid Saturday morning, Oaober 8th, before a number of invited guests. Admiral Wilson Brown, the Superintendent of the Naval Academy invited Admiral Sellers, his predecessor, to lay the Corner Stone. The ceremony was brief but impressive.

Admiral Brown spoke briefly explaining why the guests had assembled and was followed by the invocation by Chaplain Thomas of the Naval Academy.

Admiral Sellers made a short address and then laid the Corner Stone. The ceremony ended with the benediction by Chaplain Thomas.

Among the invited guests were fifteen midshipmen from each class now in the Naval Academy, including the Editorsin-chief of the Midshipmen publications.

The Museum is theirs, in fact, and the priceless relics and hisroric objeas to be found there will be of great inspirational value to them in particular,—silent reminders of the heroic and glorious deeds and services of those Naval leaders who have preceded them.

The "Cane Cutter" is, from what we can learn, a Diesel-driven tractor with welded steel channel beams. Sharp-edged discs, which are hydraulically adjusted, cut the cane both at the top and the bottom, strip and bunch it, and then deposit it in separate piles.

The claim is that "Gloom's" "gadget" does the work of some fifty workers.

The academic year began on October 1. Annual examinations were held in June of each year at which a Board of Visitors, appointed by the President, was present.

The course, generally, included instruction in mathematics as high as trigonometry, analytical geometry and conic sections; seamanship; naval construcrion; naval tactics; gunnery; infantry tactics; field artillery and mortar practice; fencing; steam engineering; astronomy; navigation and surveying; physics and chemistry; mechanics; law; history; drawing; French and Spanish.

The early routine was similar to that of today, and as it has been throughout the years daily chapel at 6.45 a. m., was held in the early years. Fifteen minutes after supper, a drum call was sounded at which gymnastic exercises were held.

Evening srudy period was from 7.30 p. m. to 9.30 p. m.

On Saturday mornings, a drill at "great guns. Naval tactics, or howitzer, or some similar drill" was held.

The following is quoted from an account of the game.

"Navy's supporters, numbering, several hundred, were decorated in colors of red and white, while across the Tlain' stood the Army's friends in black, gray and orange. It was a cold Autumn day, the football field was frozen, but this passed almost unnoticed in the enthusiasm of the speaators. Annapolis came first on the field with red and white stocking caps and red stockings. West Point appeared with black and orange caps, white suits and black stockings. Of this game an old critic wrires: "The Army defeat was the salvation of an athletic development that was just beginning to make itself felt at West Point.'

"West Point, New York, November 30,1890: Yesterday afternoon the United States Naval Academy's football team came to West Point, and engaged a team representing the United States Military Academy in the first football contest evec played by the cadets with an outside team.

Captain Culp was recently in charge of the submarine base at Pearl Harbor.

Not only will the new liaison officer handle matters concerning the use of Navy property and Navy waters in the approach to the Exposition, but he will also have charge of fleet participation in various Exposition events. Perhaps the most important of these events will be the visit of the battle fleet to the Exposition shores next June. Coming directly from the East coast, the main naval force of the country is expected to anchor as NOVEMBER,

"After rhe game the cadets entertained the midshipmen at a dance and the affair ended in an enjoyable day for all.

World's Fair close to the World's Fair as possible.

Throughout the Fair, individual ships, particularly craft in transit between the Los Angeles and San Diego bases and the Bremerton and Mare Island yards, will visit Treasure Island. Submarines, destroyers, and small cruisers are expected to anchor off the Federal Building landing to receive Exposition visitors.

Other duties of the Navy liaison officers will include welcoming foreign battleships, assigning anchorages, arranging Navy salutes and receptions to visiting foreign rulers, and taking charge of all Naval ceremonies on the island. In addition, Captain Culp plans a series of intrafleet athletic events on Treasure Island, and possibly international contests between American sailors and the champions of foreign fleets.

Land approach to Treasure Island has been made possible by the action of the Nayy Department in permitting a six-

THE DOPE WiUiam S. Aldrich, '83, is in the Northwestern Home for Disabled Veterans of the Veteran's Hospital in Wood, Wisconsin. He has been laid up for the past seven years.

Mr. Aldrich was attached to the U.S.S. Vulcan, one of Admiral Sampson's ships in Cuban waters, during the SpanishAmerican War. After that war, in which he was a Passed Assistant Engineer with the rank of Lieutenant, he went with the American Bridge Company.

• Carlos Gardiner, '00, has written an interesting letter about the recent hurricane which played such havoc and took such a terrific roll in lives in New York and New England. His letter, in part— "Sitting in my office on the twentysecond floor of a New York skyscraper at three o'clock on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 21st, I didn't realize that a real West Indies hurricane was roaring by. It seemed just like any other wind and rain storm. Its violence was not disclosed by bending trees, flying debris or high seas nor had it been foretold in the published weather reports.

"The first intimation I had that it was a real first class storm was when I reached Grand Central Starion on my way home to Westport, Conn., and learned that there was no train service beyond Stamford. Thousands of commuters were milling about the concourse and trying to telephone to their homes only to find in many cases that the telephone wires were down.

"The news circulared among rhem that the overhead electric wires were broken in several places by fallen trees, the main line was washed out around New London, bridges were carried away in several places by overflowing rivers and high tides and many lives had been losr.

"Only rhen did the real significance of this storm commence to dawn on me.

"Finally I got aboard a train that promised to go as far as New Haven if circumstances permitted and about half past eight it did get as far as Westport.

"In the New York suburbs not much damage was visible from the train but as soon as the Connecticut line was reached and the road rurned eastward evidence commenced to pile up that a real disaster had occurred.

"The first sight that met my eyes in Westport was an enormous elm tree that

had been uprooted and flung across the road near the station crushing two automobiles parked there. A hundred men were swarming over it with axes and saws and demolished it to clear the road.

"I didn't wait to watch them but hurried home. The wind had diminished and the rain had nearly ceased, but as I walked along the road the great trees that lined it were still bending before the blast and the ground was littered with broken limbs and leaves.

"At home I found that the two largest trees on the place, each more than three feet in diameter and seventy-five feet high, had been uprooted and fallen between the house and the garage, missing both by a few feet. I also lost a beautiful pear tree laden with fruit that crashed my grape arbor. Other big trees had their limbs torn off and the ground was littered with branches and leaves.

"We were very fortunate in Westporr.

The center of the storm struck near Sourhampton on the south shore of Long Island and New London on the mainland.

There rhe wind attained a velocity of 125 miles an hour. Houses were unroofed or dismantled; automobiles were blown off rhe roads and even trains were pushed off the tracks.

"In many places on Long Island the contour of the coast line was changed.

Whole beaches were washed away, summer cottages smashed to splinters and the wreckage washed inland a quarter of a mile or more. Westhampton beach was one such. About a hundred people were killed there. Many of the bodies recovered were beaten unrecognizable by the waves and debris.

"Fortunately, most beach houses were unoccupied owing to the lateness of the season. If the storm had come before Labor Day ten times as many persons would have lost their lives.

"The storm center struck the coast about three o'clock at about low tide. By the foUowing high tide around 9 P. M. the wind had shifted off shore and greatly diminished in velocity. If the tide had been high at the height of the storm even grearer damage would have resulted.

"The following morning broke calm and cloudless. Nature smiled her sweetest on the devastation and carnage she had wrought only twelve hours before.

It was four days before through traffic between New York and Boston was re-

sumed via Springfield and even now, a week after the storm, the shore line of the New Haven Railroad is not yet fully restored for use.

Edison E. Scranton, '00, has recently recovered from a long siege of sickness which kept him in the Hospital at San Diego. The latest dope is that he is fine and back on the job.

• K. H. Donavin, '08, has recently been appointed Manager of the American-Republico Line at Buenos Aires. "Pat" passed rhrough Washington, stopping off for a few hours to say "hello" to his many friends and then left by plane for Buenos Aires.

C. • Henry Shields, '11, is Secretary of the Scranton Association of Life Underwriters, and is living in Scranton, Pa. • Kirkman O'Neal, '13, who resigned in 1919, writes in from Birmingham, Alabama. Kirkman is the President of the Southern Steel Works Company which he founded in 1922. Starting the business from a very modesr beginning in '22, rhis Company has steadily grown until today its fabricaring plant has a capacity of from ten to twelve thousand tons annually and has designed, fabricated, and erected many of the largest steel structures in rhe southeast territory.

• J. D. Jones, '13, and family have "abandoned ship" at their home in Chevy Chase and sailed away for the warmer climate of Sunny California. They will spend the winter in Pasadena and expect to return home in rhe Spring.

• T M. Searles, '13, is the President of the Penn Rivet Corporation of Philadelphia, Pa. T. M. became President of the Corporation about two years ago. They build various types of machinery for domestic and export trade, and manufacture small rivets, metal stampings, and do commercial plating. Most of their output is sold to manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors, Westinghouse, American Hardware, S. K. F. Industries, General Electric, Simmons Bed Company, International Harvester, and many others.

Recently they installed the rivet setting machinery in the Naval Aircraft Faaory, League Island, Philadelphia, which is now doing the work 5 or 6 times as fast as was done previously by hand operating methods.

• W. L. Lyons Brown, '28, is Secretary and Director of the Brown-Forman Distillery Co., Inc., of Louisville, Kentucky.

The Company is one of the oldest in the country, having been founded by Lyons' grandfather way back in 1870, and has been in continuous operation ever since.

During the "Dry Days" the Company was one of the seven distilleries who was granted a Federal Manufacturing Permit for the retail drug trade.

Lyons left the Naval Academy in the middle of youngster year afrer spending some 4 or 5 months in the hospital. He was injured in an accident on board the UTAH during his youngster cruise in 1925. He subsequently became associated with the distillery which bears his family name.

Their leading brands are: OLD FORESTER, bottled in bond—has always been a product of which the family is most proud; EARLY TIMES, another famous and well known whiskey; and OLD TUCKER, one of the finest blends of straight whiskies.

Navy Coaches The Navy coaches have recently invented a new blocking machine. The apparatus, as constructed, enables the coach to determine the speed with which a lineman delivers his inirial charge, after the ball is snapped. The new machine, constructed by R. G. Whitworth and Wm. Wiedefeld, consists of two perpendicular arms attached to a horizonral crossbar under which the linemen charge.

As they do, they hit the vertical arm which, through an inrricate series of springs and levers, rings a bell. The bells are of different tone and it is thus possible to determine the first one to have crossed the line of scrimmage. The difference between two fast linemen is so slight as to make it impossible to determine by eye. The competitive element afforded by this machine has increased the effectiveness of charging practice and is being used by the Navy line coaches.

each week. Ray Swartz, Navy wrestling coach and assistant line coach, hit upon the idea of calling these outfits the "Devastators," and each week the "DEVASTATORS" act as Navy's forrhcoming opponenrs. The name has stuck, and as a matter of fact the group has so far lived up to its name, for in more than one scrimmage a week they give the varsity a thorough going over—and one can hear many a player and coach along the sidelines say, "The devastators are at it again."

Navy 33—Virginia 0 Clearly ourclassing the highly-touted football team of Virginia wirh their stellar back, Gillette, Navy swamped the "Cavaliers" 33 to 0. The game, despite the one-sidedness of the score, was an exciring one to watch and furnished plenty of thrills to the capacity crowd of 22,253 souls who swarmed into Thompson Stadium on Saturday, October 8th.

Navy took the opening kick-off which Gillette of Virginia booted to Cooke and he was stopped on Navy's 18 yard line.

Navy's power house began to roll immediately. Cooke skirted end for 12 yards and a first down on the 1st play.

Wood pulled a reverse and made another 12 yards, and another first down. Cooke passed to Powell for a 17 yard pass and a 7 yard run to put the ball on Virginia's 33 yard line and the bewildered "Cavaliers" took time out. A line buck, then another pass to Whitehead placed the ball on Virginia's 18 yard line. Another line smash and a pass and the ball rested on Virginia's 4Vi yard stripe. Then Wood and Cooke alternated on line plays and on the third smash. Wood hit the center of Virginia's line for a touchdown.

It all took just 12 plays and a little less than 5 minutes. Wood's kick was wide and the score stood 6-0.

Navy then kicked off to Virginia. Gillette took the ball on his own 5 yard line and brought the excited crowd to their feet by his spectacular return of 52 yards to Navy's 43 yard line. On the first play, Gillette was on the end of a double reverse and lugged the ball around Navy's left end to Navy's 31 yard line, a 12 yard gain and a first down. The crowd jumped to their feet. Virginia's snappy band blared forth, and it looked like all the pre-game dope on Virginia was about to come true! Virginia threw a pass but Whitehead grabbed it on Navy's 20 yard line and ran to his own 27 before he was {Continued on page 11)

Well along in the second quarter Wood intercepted one of Virginia's passes on his own 25 yard line and ran to his own 47 yard line before being downed. Lenz, youngster substitute for Cooke, had entered the game and Navy again started the "big push." Lenz, smashed right tackle for 10 yards and a first down. Wood followed with a 14 yard gain through right tackle. After several line bucks, Lenz threw a pass to Corbert, who had come into the game for Burke at left end, for another 11 yard gain. The ball was now on Virginia's 16 yard line. Lenz and Wood alternated in carrying the ball and in 5 plays Lenz hit the center of the line for a touchdown.

Wood's kick, with Whitehead holding, was good and the score stood 13-0.

The second quarter ended shortly afterwards with the score 13-0.

During the halves, Virginia's smartly drilled band paraded the field, saluting the Navy side by forming a huge N and playing "Anchors Aweigh." They then crossed the field to the Virginia stands, formed a large V and played their own battle song. What a hand they got!

The second half opened with McLaughlin, Virginia's left tackle, kicking to Wood on his 6 yard line. Wood raced straight down the center of the field.

Navy blockers formed ahead of him and on about the Navy's 40 yard line there was a regular reception committee of Virginia players to greet him. But his blockers all were on the job. N o one in the stands could even see how Wood could get through that formidable array.

He never changed his course even a degree and, to the thrilling amazement of all, merged through the pack with Spector, Navy's left guard leading rhe way.

On Wood raced straight for Virginia's goaL Only Gillette stood in the way and Spector was there to take him out, which he did. Wood's second touchdown for the day! He kicked goal and the score stood 20-0.

result was a 1 yard gain. They passed and the pass was incomplete, so they kicked. The game see-sawed back and forth until Gillette gathered in a Navy pass on Navy's 44 yard line. Then Virginia began to click. Two first downs were reeled off in rapid succession and it was Virginia's ball on the Navy's 17 yard line. Here Navy braced and pushed back Virginia's attack. On the fourth down, Virginia fumbled, but recovered, but the ball was Navy's on their own 22 yard line. It was the last time Virginia was in a threatening position. Navy began pounding again and, when the quarter ended, the ball was Navy's on Virginia's Virginia still refused to be beaten, as 25 yard line. Virginia could not sustain a march to Navy's goal, try what they would, and the play surged back and forth between the 30 yard lines. Then, as the final minutes were at hand, Blount, Shafer, Malcolm and Rouse, all substitute backs worked the ball to Vitginia's 7 yard line.

On the second play Rouse hit center for another touchdown. Worden, another substitute back, kicked goal and the score stood 33-0. The game ended just after Navy's kick-off with the ball in Virginia's possession on their own 30 yard line.

The statistics of the game show clearly that the Navy out-classed Virginia.

Virginia made 6 1st downs to Navy's 24; gained 93 yards by rushing to Navy's 11

279; attempted 13 foiward passes, completing 5 to Navy's 17 with 7 completed; Virginia gained 53 yards by their air attack to Navy's 107; Virginia punred 7 times for a 47 yard average to Navy's 4 boots, for an average of 48 yards; Virginia gained a total of 298 yards during the afternoon while Navy's total yardage was 496: Virginia was penalized once, an off side play, for 5 yards while Navy offended 3 times for 15 yards.

The Navy team has improved considerably since their first game. They now meet Yale, Princeton, Penn, Notre Dame, and Columbia on successive Saturdays, before their final game with Army.

It's a tough schedule and much tougher opposition than they have met in those first three games. The team, while somewhat improved over last year's, will have a continuous REAL battle from now on and it is hard to believe they can stay in the "Win Column" when t h e smoke finally clears away.

Whitehead Shu No.3Back Gillette Trzciak (C) No.4Back Wood The late arrivals of the capacity crowd on Saturday Oct. 1st, were hustling through the gate at Thompson Stadium trying to make their seats and find out what all the bedlam was about while inside some 20 thousand odd spectators were on their feet watching an inspired Navy team strike like lightning to score 2 touchdowns and kick a placement goal after touchdown with the game hardly four minutes old. Navy, with Bergner kicking off, had won the pass and the kick went to VMI's 15 yard line. Paul Shu, VMI's All American mention, had caught the ball and eluded several of the Navy's would-be tacklers before being brought to earth on his own 39 yard line.

VMI tried the Navy line to no avail and booted to the Navy 30 yard line. Emmet Wood caught the ball and returned ir to his own 39 yard line before VMI finally stopped him. On the first Navy play, Cooke started as if to go around end, hesitated on his run, took several steps back, shot the ball far down the 12

field over his left side where Powell, Navy's Captain and right end, caught the pass on VMI's 30 yard line and ran the remaining distance for a touchdown.

Wood's try for placement went wide and the score was 6-0. Again, Bergner kicked off, this time to VMI's 6 yard line. And, again, VMI shook off several Navy tacklers before finally being downed on their own 40 yard line. On their third down, they took to the air. Powell intercepted the pass and the ball belonged to the Navy on VMI's 42 yard line. The Navy lined up, Cooke ran around VMI's right end to their 27 yard line before being pulled down, a 15 yard gain. Then, on the next play, Cooke passed to Burke, Navy's left end, who took the ball on VMI's 10 yard line and ran across the line for the Navy's second touchdown.

This time Wood's kick was good and the score stood Navy 13—VMI 0.

For the rest of the quarter, the play was fast and furious and in VMI's terrirory mosr of the time. VMI made 1 first down, aided by a penalty against Navy but were not able to cross into Navy terrirory.

The second quarter found Navy in VMI's terrirory practically all the time.

Late in the quarrer Navy started another drive when Navy recovered a VMI fumble on VMI's 39 yard line. Cooke and Wood made it a first down on VMI's 26 yard line after punching VMI's line.

The same pair, using the same tactics, made another in 2 more plays on VMI's 13 yard line. Cooke then passed to Ghesquiere on VMI's 5 yard line but the whistle blew and the period was over.

The third period was only a few plays old when Powell, ever alerr, pounced on a VMI fumble on Navy's 45 yard line.

McDaniels, subsrituting for Cooke at No. 4 back, slipped through tackle for 14 yards. Wood and McDaniels alrernated at hitting the line and made another first down on VMI's 26 yard line. Then McDaniels heaved a pass to Powell who took it on VMI's 5 yard line and ran over for his second rouchdown for the day. Wood tried for a placement bur it was wide and the score stood 19-0. Both teams were playing hard and the game was rough.

Navy was penalized half the distance to the goal line which put VMI on Navy's 34 yard line, the closest they carried the ball to Navy's goal during the afternoon.

The 4th quarter opened with VMI kicking from their 35 yard line to Navy's 27. Lenz, a stellar youngster back who subs for Wood, had entered the game and proceeded to make it a first down on Navy's 44 yard line. Then with

the ball on Navy's 49 yard line, Lenz heaved a pass to Powell who was tackled on VMI's 27 yard line. After Navy was penalized 5 yards for too much time out, Lenz went around end to VMI's 17 yard line and another fiirst down. Blaha, another substitute back who shows plenty of promise, pulled a reverse and lugged the ball to VMI's 12 yard line. After an incomplere pass which was just missed in the end zone, and McDaniels had hit the line for 3 yards, Lenz crashed through right tackle for touchdown. McDaniels heaved a pass to Lenz to score the extra poinr, the last of the game, and bringing the afternoon's total to 26-0.

The statistics for the afternoon tell a real story. VMI made 3 first downs to Navy's 14; VMI made 80 yards by rushing, while Navy made 209. VMI attempted 11 passes with none successful, while Navy heaved 29, 9 of which were caught, resulting in a gain of 163 yards and 3 touchdowns; VMI fumbled 4 times, recovering 2 of them, while Navy did not fumble. VMI kicked 14 times averaging 43 yards per kick while Navy kicked 11 for a 45 yard average. VMI was penalized 4 times for 20 yards while Navy drew 11 penalties for 125 yards, which was 45 yards more than VMI gained during rhe whole game! The total yards gained by VMI was 80; Navy gained 370 yards.

Tennis On September 19th and 20th, tennis enthusiasts were given a real treat when some excellent tennis matches were played at the Naval Academy which had been arranged by Captain E. W . McKee, '08, Director of Athletics. Those who played were: Arthur L. Hendrix, ranked 10 in the U. S. last year and the new varsity coach at the Naval Academy; Joseph R. Hunt, ranked 5 this year and the fotuth member of this year's Davis Cup Team; Wilmer Hines, ranked 9 in 1936; Martin Buxby, ranked 16; and George Toley, one of the most promising players in collegiate circles. Riggs, No. 2 on the Davis Cup Team this year, and Sabin, ranked 6, were to have played but were storm-bound due to the storm which raged along the East Coast. The Navy opened their '39 Football season by decisively trouncing William and Mary 26-0 at Thompson Stadium, Farragut Field, on Saturday, September 24th. While the Navy supporters were not surprised particularly, most everyone was surprised at the size of the score.

The Indians were outclassed in every department of the game except kicking, although they played a hard game and made the game an interesting one to watch. In the second quarter they played their best football holding the Navy scoreless.

Navy got underway in the first quarter and before hardly any time had elapsed, had pushed over a touchdown.

They then proceeded to get another and the first quarter ended with the score 13-0. The second quarter, as has already been told, ended with the score still 13-0.

After an exchange of punrs to open the third quarter. Navy took the ball on their own 20 yard line. Navy then proceeded to cut loose. They made 6 successive first downs winding up on W. and M.'s 6 yard line. On rhe next play, Wood cracked through right tackle for a touchdown. Wood failed to kick goal.

The quarter ended with the score 19-0.

The most thrilling play of the game came in the 4th quarter when Lenz, a fine looking back up from last year's Plebe team, heaved a 20 yard pass to Ghesquiere, a first classman and a very promising end, who set sail for W. and M.'s goal line some 45 yards away. Ghesquiere made a pretty run, dodging several W. and M. tacklers, and broughr the score up to 26-0. Then, in the fleeting minutes of the game. Navy's passing game continued to click and Navy worked the ball down to W. and M.'s 10 yard line when the whistle blew and ended the game. Final score Navy 26— W. and M. 0.

The spirit of the Navy team was excellent in that game. The boys played

The Baltimore Branch met at the Stafford Hotel on North Charles Street, Wednesday, Oaober 12th. A large gang turned out and heard an excellent informal talk given by Leland Lovette, '18, on European and Far Eastern affairs. Leland is on duty in the Navy Department. His talk was not only most interesting to those of the Alumni who were fortunate to hear it but also greatly appreciated.

Final arrangements were discussed for the Alumni party which the Baltimore Branch is sponsoring at the Emerson on Saturday night, November 12th after the Navy-Notre Dame game. The Branch has arranged a real party for those of the Alumni who will attend the game.

hard and it was easy to see that they are really fighting for their jobs. Except for the second quarter. Navy gained consistently both through the line and by passes. They give promise of having a good line and deception in their plays.

Their blocking and tackling was poor in spots and is undoubtedly giving the coaches real concern. The kicking was not as good as it should be, averaging 41 yards on 7 punts. They fumbled on 7 different occasions recovering 4 of them.

Navy used 22 substitutes during the game. Their reserves are not any too powerful or numerous but there is some real prospects in sighr. The coaches fully realize the short-comings of their team and are, as they have been since practice began, O N THE JOB.

The New England Alumni group ate starting off the year's activities with a trip to the Navy-Yale game at New Haven. W. A. Finn, Chairman of the Committee, reports about eighty-five people are going from the vicinity of Newport and Boston.

On October 28 the Annual Dinner will be held at 7 p. m. at the University Club, Boston.

Rear Admiral Wm. T. Tarrant, USN, Commandant First Naval District, will be a guest of the Association and Commander A. S. Merrill, USN, will be the speaker of the evening.

Captain H. E. Cook, USN (Ret.), reports that a large attendance is expected, including graduates from Newport, Portsmouth and, in fact, every New England state.

CHICAGO, ILL. The first meeting of the Naval Academy Association of Chicago since last May was held on September 30 in the Naval Reserve Armory in Chicago, which is just heaving-line distance from the Outer Drive Bridge that was dedicated last year by President Roosevelt.

But unless you can travel the path of a heaving line, you are still a long way from the Armory when you are up on that bridge.

Some of the members who came on foot (and the Depression has not been over in these parts so long but what a lot of us really prefer the exercise and never think of taking a cab just to go a few miles) did a Steve Brody over the embankment, making a very expensive night of it, what with the best pair of a twopants suit looking like a fluttering flag hoist.

The attendance was unusually good, nevertheless. A number of officers on duty in and near Chicago were present, and a further contact with the regular Navy was furnished by some moving piaures which Lieutenant Commander G. D. Lyon, '21, sent over from the Recruiting Office. Add to that the setting of the Armory's ward room with three or four Filipino mess attendants serving dinner, and it is understandable that some of the boys began to look around for their binoculars and gloves. (Only a few aaually stood the midwatch, however).

There has been a marked improvement in the attendance at the weekly luncheons every Wednesday noon in the Blue Fountain Room of the La Salle Hotel. Naval Academy men, both in and out of the Service, who happen to be within eating distance of the La Salle on any Wednesday noon will find the old guard of the ex-gentlemen in an alcove all to themselves, talking Navy.

The Philadelphia Branch opened their Fall Season with a Luncheon at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel, September 21st. Despite the faa that it was pouring down, some 30 odd of the "faithful" came in dripping to do what they could to help.

The news that Captain Stayton expected to resign as President of the (National) Association caused considerable comment. All present recognized the great help that Captain Stayton has been to our Alumni groups.

W. Van C. Brandt, '11, made a motion that should Captain Stayton resign and his resignation were accepted, that he be eleaed Honorary President for life. The motion was passed unanimously. . The committee in charge of the Alumni party to be held on the night of the ArmyNavy game, reported that the details were praaically complete.

Captain "Pete" Beck, '07, attended the meeting and spoke brifly concerning the importance of the Alumni Association. Admiral Cluverius was prevented from attending at the last moment and sent his regrets. "Shorty Milner," '21, who is on duty at the yard, and "Pete" Welch, '23, who is Recruiting in Philadelphia, attended with Captain Beck to represent the Navy Yard.

Reservations for the Alumni Party have begun to pour in. Those who wish to attend the party should notify Shane H. King, the Secretary, at 1515 Locust Street, and send their remittances. The per capita charge is $3.50.

Our last meeting brought out a few suggestions re.garding the holding of a get together during the football broadcast of the Army-Navy Game. At our nexr meeting more probably will be said regarding the plans.

ST. LOUIS, MO. The St. Louis Chapter of the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association met Monday, September 19, for a luncheon meeting at the Missouri Athletic Association. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce St. Louis Midshipmen to the members. Midshipmen who attended were: Owen Brinson, E. F. Hayes, W. J. Carey, O. F. Dreyer, and R. F. Deibel, Jr. Members present were: R. P. Foose, S. A. Lief, Elmer C. Powell, G. B. Helmick, J. W. QuiUian, J. V. Land, W. P. Kellogg, L. B. Jaudon, H. J. Elson, Chas. Ashley, A. G. Beckmann.

Skipper Elson gave a short address of welcome with a response from each Midshipman.

The group decided that between now and the Army-Navy game, a meeting would be held.

The following were appointed as the Entertainment Committee: W. P. Kellogg, Chairman. Members, Chas. Ashley, Jaudon, Lief, and Beckmann.

The Secretary announced that within a few days minutes of this meeting, accompanied by a questionnaire, would be sent to all members in St. Louis and vicinity. The questionnaires would be compiled and a roster will be mimeographed and mailed to each member. Business associations and aids in business were discussed by the members. All members concurred in the opinion that reciprocal business relations would be welcome.

Also discussed was a possibility of forming an employment service for members.

A letter from Lloyed Stark to Bill Kellogg was read. We are sorry Governor Stark could not be with us for this meeting. He sent best wishes to all mipshipmen and all the Navy Contingent. Also were read eleven regret cards.

Members were urged to drop a postal card to the Secretary if and when they heard of new USNA grads or bilgers in the St. Louis vicinity.

It was voted to send flowers to Col. Eugene J. Spencer who is ill from a brain hemorrhage.
