Our Debt Another June Week has come and gone.

Another ball game, another victory. Another luncheon in the crowded Club with friends and classmates on every hand. Another anniversary, '13 celebrating its twenty-fifth. Yes, already, though it doesn't seem possible or indeed quite right. John Paul Jones, Smoke Hall, Tecumseh; the Bell and Benches; all in their accustomed places. The President come, given out the diplomas, gone. The new graduates set sail, never to greet each other all at once again.

Another midshipmen's Cruise steamed out the Roads. And now the Club is silent, peculiarly so, like a morgue. Can anything be deader than Crabtown out of season? Time to think after another typical Week, before Plebes is Plebes again. Our debt. How much we owe this place! Memories, each one stowed away undimmed in its cubby hole, clean and clear. The day we entered, fearful. The Oath. Our first blues from Jakie's. The thud of rhythmic shoes, tramping ofF to class, "la lecon" like as not unboned. The gladdest years of life—and the hardest. Looking back. It gets further away every year. But clearer. New friends come, new faces.

They are not like the old. New surroundings,

fresh outlooks. Not quite the same. New duties, strange plans; none as glamorous as the old. Ah yes! How much we really do owe this place. If only each of its sons would give it a few minutes thought a year, a few minutes toil for all it has done for them. A few minutes contribution of whatever they have to offer. And we all have something. It's Crabtown-on-the-Bay we're talking about. Our sanctuary. We may have brought it honor, we may have bilged. We may have fallen down on it from the very first in our own eyes. We may be rich, we may be poor. But the Maryland Gate and the Jimmy Legs are always there to welcome us, with courage and a smile.

Refuge, Work House, Playground, Home, or Sweat Shop, make of it what you will. But it is there, and it is ours, to honor and obey. It has given us what none but God may take . . . its stamp. Maybe we are much alike, maybe we are lacking in many things, but its sons wp are.

And give to it we must whatever we can. However and whenever. Families, friends, fathers, mothers go. But this is always here, the only enduring home most of us will ever know, and which we all owe much.

U. S. PRACTICE SHIP MONONGAHELA On Saturday, May 28, the Class of 1898 presented a painting of the U. S. Practice Ship Monongahela to the Regiment, assembled in formation on the terrace of Bancroft Hall. Captain Williams made the presentation speech which is quoted: "Admiral Brown, Fellow Classmates of the Class of 1898, Guests, Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy. Members of the Naval Academy Class of '98 desiring ro memorialize the fortieth anniversary of their graduation and to preserve the memory of the fine old ship that contributed so greatly to their training have provided for the Naval Academy a painting by Gordon Grant of the practice ship MONONGAHELA, in which members of that class made all of their four annual practice cruises.

"The United States Sloop of War M O N O N G A H E L A , single screw steamer of 1378 tons, fitted with sails, barkentine rig, was built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard during the Civil War

and was commissioned January 15, 1863.

She performed service in the West Gulf and Norrh Atlantic Squadrons, rook part in the operations of the Mississippi River, was Admiral Farragut's flagship for one month. She took prominent part also in the Battle of Mobile Bay, when, reversing roles, she rammed the Confederate ram TENNESSEE. "Afrer the Civil War she served on the West Indian Station. In November, 1867, when anchored off Frederickstaft Island of St. Croix, she was carried by a tidal wave over the warehouses onto one of the streets of the town. Coming back with the returning sea she was left almost upright, high and dry on a coral reef near rhe water.

"A salvage expedirion sent from New York to refloat MONONGAHELA under the direction of Naval Constructor Davidson was successful in launching her in May 1868. After refitting she was recommissioned and served on rhe Pacific and Asiatic Stations. In 1884 her machinery was removed and the vessel con-

verted into a full-rigged sailing sloop-ofwar at Mare Island. Afterwards she served as store ship for the Pacific Fleet at Callao, Peru, and on her return trip to the east coast under sail made a record passage around the horn.

"In 1894 MONONGAHELA was fitted out at the Norfolk Navy Yard under direction of Lieutenant Osterhaus for service as Naval Academy Practice Ship.

She then was taken to the Naval Academy and at General Muster at noon May 15, 1894, was commissioned as a pracrice ship under command of Comdr. C. M. Chesrer, Commandant of Cadets.

"On June 9, 1894, occurred the event which, from the point of view of today's proceedings, is the most important in the vessel's career. Plebes of the Class of 1898 came on board along with Naval Cadets of the First Class and Youngsters.

ing in May participated in the practice cruise. Besides the May Plebes of '98 MONONGAHELA carried on this cruise the Qass of 1895, except the Engineer Caders, and the whole Class of 1897.

Many names well known to you appear on the record in the log of this cruise.

Some of rhem are Worth Bagley, Brumby, Gherardi, Standley, DuBose, Harr, Hepburn, Kempff, Leahy, A. H. McCarrhy, J. W. Powell, Sexton, St. Clair Smith, and YarneU. MONONGAHELA at this time was as shown in Mr. Grant's painting. Her machinery had been removed and she was a flush deck, fullrigged ship with all square sails to royals, and lower, ropmasr and ropgallant studding sails. She carried no bartery excepr saluring guns. She was the last vessel of the United States Navy to carry studding sails.

"During the 1894 practice cruise MONONGAHELA based on Lynnhaven Roads, making rrips to sea and rerurn.

"On-her practice cruise of 1895, MONONGAHELA had on board all of rhe Third Qass, '98, the Firsr Qass, '96, except the Engineer Cadets, and the May Plebes of '99. She made a trip to Funchal, Madeira, and '98 had a good taste of sea going under rhose extraordinarily fine seamen and strict disciplinarians, Comdr.

"In Mr. Grant's painting the vessel is shown with Funchal in the background and this was to become a familiar and at times welcome sight to '98. The trip out from Annapolis generally consumed about one month, occasionally less. The return trip which, in order to take advantage of the Portugese Trades was far to rhe sourh, consumed about six weeks, more than four weeks our of sight of land, and with no ice and no fresh provisions. The building is to be erected within the Naval Academy grounds on the site between the Officers Club, Mahan and Maury Halls. It will be 105 feet wide and 75 feet deep. It is designed in conformity with the other Academy buildings by F. W. Southworth, Architect of the Bureau of Yards and Docks, who also designed Melville Hall and has had general supervision over Naval Academy architecture for more than twenty years.

The building will be a two-and-a-half story structure of white pressed brick with granite facings and is financed without cost to the Government. It is expected that the building will be completed in time to dedicate it in June Week of 1939.

In the museum there will be found trophy flags, guns, swords, letters, portraits of distinguished officers, models, figure heads, log book and the many other items that have both a historical and a traditional value that have been written into the memorable events of the American Naval Hisrory, trophy flags of Manila Bay, presented by Admiral Dewey; a George Washington collection presented by R. T. Crane, Jr.; a collection assembled by Adm. George Henry Preble; ship models collected by the late Col. H. H. Rogers which he willed to the Academy; a PANAY life buoy presented

of baptizing the ring. Three huge Conch shells, which had been obtained from the Philippine Islands, were mounted on a tripod of anchors near the large ring. As each couple approached the Ring, the girl dipped the ring in each of the three shells. One shell was filled with water from the Pacific Ocean, another was filled wirh the waters from the Gulf of Mexico, and the third was filled wirh water from the Atlantic Ocean. The couples then proceeded to pass through the Ring, pausing in the Ring where the girl placed the ring on her escort and kissed him.

The dance was held in Memorial Hall which was very attracrively decorated. A buffet supper preceded rhe dance.

John Paul Jones

Mr. Richard C. Dale, of Philadelphia, presented to the Superintendent of the Naval Academy, Admiral Brown, and the Regiment of Midshipmen, assembled at formation on the terrace of Bancroft Hall on Saturday, May 28, the sword awarded to John Paul Jones by King Louis XVI. Inlaid in gold are figures representing the sun, trophies, and the French Royal Arms of the three fleurs de lis, surmounted by a crown. The motto "Vive le Roy" is engraved on both sides. The following inscription (somewhat illegible, as the gold inlay has fallen out in places) is below the guard plate: Vindicati Maris Ludovicus XVI Remunerator Strenuo Vinvici On the reverse side is lightly engraved a motto which has become obliterated by time.

The name of the maker, or more probably the furnisher, is on the blade: "La Veuve Guilmino, Versailles."

The hilt is of gold, richly chased with figures and floral decorations. The pommel is made up of two designs, the figure of Neptune with his trident in high relief, and rhe three fleurs de lis. The grip is ornamenred on the obverse with figures of Hercules and Mars in medallions, festoons, and ribbons held in the mouth of a mythological animal, and a standard of flags; rhe reverse side shows the three fleurs de lis, Roman soldier, rrophies, and Greek soldier.

The upper surface of the guard is ornamenred on both sides; on one, in a medallion, is a figure of Minerva standing, also a rising sun; on the other, is Mars. The lower surface of the plate has a similar medallion of Minerva and fleur de lis. The pas d'ane and finger guard are beautifully chased with floral designs and terminates in dolphin heads.

The scabbard is of black learher, the mountings of gold engraved wirh trophies and arms. The drag is quite plain.

The sword is in a wooden case, firred to its shape and lined with chamois skin and the outside covered with red morocco learher.

The Naval Academy and the Naval Service are deeply indebted to Mr. Dale for his generous gift. The sword will be kept at the Naval Academy where it will serve as an inspiration for those in the Academy and those to follow.

Class of 1942 The first of the Class of 1942 arrived at the Naval Academy to be sworn in as Midshipmen on June 8th. From all indications, the new fourth class will have approximately 709 members and will come from all parts of the country and the territories. SHIPMATE, on behalf of the Alumni, welcomes the class of 1942 to the Naval Academy and wishes them success.

Graduation On Thursday, June 2, President Roosevelt presented 435 members of the Class of 1938 their diplomas and the degrees as Bachelor of Science. The ceremony took place in Dahlgren Hall with one of the largest crowds in the history of the Academy.

The President told the graduating class that they would never "reach the top and stay at the top" unless they become well-rounded in their knowledge of all factors of civilization "that lie outside of your own special profession." The President also told them how he had disgraced himself at one of the graduarion ceremonies during the World War by falling asleep during the ceremony.

John Elmer Dacey of Biloxi, Miss., stood one in the class. P. G. Schultz, Jr., of Roswell, New Mexico, stood two, and F. C. Jones of New London, Conn., stood three. Twenty-three members of the graduaring class completed the four-year course at the Academy with a merit of distinction.

After the ceremonies, the new youngster class went tearing for "Lovers' Lane" where they held the traditional "snake dance" to celebrate the passing of those days of suffering. The newly-appointed firsr class took on more dignity as they continued their duties of looking after rhe affairs of the undergraduare Midshipmen, which duties they had been performing for rhe week preceding graduation. And so anorher class passed through the portals of the Academy, on to their careers in the Services or in the fields of business enterprise.

Presentation of Prizes The prize wirmers for 1938 were presented their awards at the Dress Parade held on Worden Field on June Isr. 1. The Navy Department awards a trophy to the midshipman of each graduating class who has demonstrated outstanding proficiency in the use of the service rifle, and also a trophy to the foremost pistol shot of each graduating class. These trophies are designated, respectively, as the "Secretary of the Navy's Rifle Trophy" and the "Secretary of the Navy's Pistol Trophy." Recipients: Rifle trophy — Midshipman Herold James Weiler, Jr., Isr Class. Pistol trophy—Midshipman Cecil Rice Welte, 1st Class. Presented by The Superintendent.

The Class of 1897, United States Naval Academy, presents a sword to that midshipman of the graduating class who has contributed most by his oflficer-like qualities and positive character to the development of naval spirit and loyalty within the Regiment. The name of the midshipman to whom the sword is awarded is inscribed on the Class of 1897 cup, which remains at the Naval Academy. Recipient: Midshipman Frank Curtis Lynch, jr., 1st Class. Presented by Admiral St. Clair Smith, Ret. 6. The Class of 1912, United States Naval Academy, presents a service auromatic pistol to that midshipman of the graduating class who stands highest for the course in English. A pocket watch has been selected as this year's prize. Recipient: Midshipman William John Schlacks, jr., 1st Class. Presented by The Commandant of Midshipmen.

9. The General Society Sons of the Revolution has presented to the Naval Academy a cup, on which each year is engraved the name of the midshipman of the graduaring class most proficient in practical ordnance and gunnery. Recipient: Midshipman John Koebig Leydon, 1st Qass. Presented by The Superintendent.

10. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution presents a pair of marine binoculars to the midshipman of the graduating class who excels in seamanship. Recipient: Midshipman John Elmer Dacey, 1st Class.

The Armory

John Paul Jones Sextant Mr. D. L. MacLaren, Mayor of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, presented to the President, who, in turn, presented to the Naval Academy, the sextant which was used by John Paul Jones. The presentation was made during the graduation ceremony at the Naval Academy on Thursday, June 2. Mr. MacLaren's presenrarion speech is printed herewith: "Mr. President: "It is my great pleasure and high honour to stand here roday in such illustrious company and complete the mission that has brought me from my home in Saint John, New Brunswick.

"The object of that mission is to present to you, sir, and through you to the great American Nation, the quadrant used by that famed officer of your early life as a nation as a power upon the waters—the gallant Commodore, John Paul Jones, the Father of the American Navy.

"I would like to convey to you again, sir, that my pleasure was very great when you wrote me accepting the offer of this relic of your early history linked as it is with stirring events that have won high place in the annals of the nation of which you are the executive head. And here I may be pardoned if I point out that, in initiating the matter and carrying out my mission, I am performing a filial duty, for the quadrant had rested many years in the possession of my late father, Mr. J. S.

MacLaren, and it had been his wish that it should some day become the property of the American people.

"The hisrory of this famous quadrant has been told but may I briefly rehearse it.-* When John Paul Jones died in Paris in 1792 his meagre possessions were sent to an aunt. Miss Paul, in his native Scotland. A little later when her nephew, Simon Graham, shipped before the mast as a small lad she gave him the quadrant.

He used it for years. He finally settled and spent the last years of his life in Richibucto in my Province of New Brunswick, Canada. There, too, lived my grandparents. My late father received the quadrant as a gift from the son of Simon Graham and it became one of his most highly prized possessions.

"In one of the letters, Mr. President, with which you favoured me since the matter was opened, you were good enough to express delight at the thought of receiving this memento of stirring days of old and to add appreciarion of the suggestion that it pass to your hands. You also added that the making of this gift was 'certain to cement further the strong sentiments that so happily exist between our respective countries.'

"There, indeed, is a goal worthwhile —and one not difficult of attainment. We on the norrhern side of the imaginary border between your country and mine recognize with pardonable pride the sanity of viewpoint, the mutual regard {Continued on page 16)

Many, probably mosr, alumni know little about the Navy's Crew Camp located near Poughkeepsie, New York, at which the crew squad lives and trains for the ten or more days immediately preceding the Intercollegiate Regatta annually held there.

The Camp is located on the East Bank of the Hudson about three miles above the City of Poughkeepsie. Its buildings consist of two story frame structiures.

One of the buildings provides sleeping quarters, mess hall and lounging room combined in one, and a kitchen. The other building, joined to the first by a short bridge, provides a suelter for the shells, a small workshop, dressing rooms and baths.

In 1934, on the occasion of the Fleet's visit to New York harbor, the crew of 1893, which was the first eight-oared crew to represent the U. S. Naval Academy, held a reunion, and attended the Regatta. On this occasion the Navy's Crew Camp was christened "Camp Winston Churchill," and a bronze plaque installed over the fireplace in the mess hall, was unveiled. The plaque reads: C A M P W I N S T O N CHURCHILL

"Named in honor of Winston Churchill, of Windsor, Vermont, Class of 1894, U S. Naval Academy.

"To his vision and high qualities of leadership is due the re-establishment of rowing as a sport at the Naval Academy following a lapse of twenty years.

"He captained and rowed No. 7 in the Varsity crew of 1893, the first eight-oared crew to represent the Naval Academy.

He also captained and rowed No. 3 in the Varsiry crew of 1894.

"His literary talent won him eminence in the world of letters; his personal charm and high character won him a lasting place in the hearts of his contemporaries of the Service."

Of the Navy's first eight-oared crew, the following were present: Mr. Winsron Churchill Caprain F. D. Karns Mr. H. S. Kimball Rear Admiral D. F. Sellers Captain C. S. Bookwalter Captain K. G. Castleman Rear Admirals J. M. Reeves and L. C. Palmer were unable to attend. Mr. C. L. Poor and Mr. F. S. Ridgely were deceased.

Congratulations Appointment of Vincent P. Conroy, '23, former airline traffic official, as Sales Manager for Transcontinental and Western Air, Inc., was announced roday by John B. Walker, vice-president in charge of traffic for T. W. A. Graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1923, "Vin" served in the Navy on both coasts before resigning in 1925 and prepared himself for the air transport field, in which he had become vitally interested.

Following a period of experience in sales promotional work for various firms in New "Ybrk, he became associated with National Air Transport, first at the company's offices in Kansas City and later in New York City as District Traffic Manager.

He remained in New York City with this title for eight years, during which time he was associated with various airlines, serving as Division Traffic Manager for Eastern Airlines in New York from 1935 until now.

During his midshipman days and as an oflicer he was aaive in athletics, playing three years of varsity football at Annapolis and serving as Captain of the Navy team his senior year, and aaing as coach of the football team of the U. S. S. Colorado when he was artached to that ship.

He is married, the father of two daughters, aged six and eight years, and still retains his interest in athletics.

He will have offices at T. W. A.'s main base in Kansas City, Mo., where he will work directly under the vice-president in charge of traffic, direaing national and local sales campaigns.

All hands join with SHIPMATE in wishing "Vin" "happy landings" in his new position and congratulate him on his achievement.

the instructor had to send an SOS to the crowd to put it back together. Another of the burlesques was an insrrucror in English and History who demanded a dissertation on marriage. The dissertation was mingled with comments by the "Professor" on the need of intellectual men in the Navy. The show ended with a baseball game between Midshipmen with officers acting as umpires. They gave the batter a bottle cleaner instead of a bat and otherwise harassed the players.

The band played "No More Rivers" during the show.

USS California Lieut. Ben Scott Custer, '26, sent in the following report of action taken in the cases of certain grave misdemeanors which occurred on the California during rhe recent Fleet Problem, which is appreciared and will undoubtedly be read with great interest by our Alumni:

The charges are as follows: That the above named husbands did, on or about the 13th of April, 1938, knowingly and wilfully, and without revealing rheir intentions to the other members purchase and rransmit to their wives by Clipper Mail, one-half dozen orchids, scheduled so as to arrive in Long Beach in time for Easter.

To the obviously serious narure of these charges is the damning fact that these husbands well knew that the mails closed at such a time as to prevent the other members from raking measures to protect themselves.

The Disciplinary Committee has been shocked beyond expression by the heinous nature of this crime against the Ward Room Fraternity and has unanimously voted to withdraw all protection formerly enjoyed by rhe accused, and, in addition, to impose cerrain other retaliatory punishment as will be revealed in due time to the miserable culprits.

No More Riversi 1938 put on their "No More Rivers to Cross" show on Saturday, May 21, in front of Bancroft Hall, and all hands had a grand time. The stage setting was a flock of scattered balloons, each representing an "eight ball." The burlesque started with a huge altimeter, made of sheet metal, stove pipe and a number of assorted gears. The instructor was introduced to the gathering as "Altimeter Al" who conducted the class in Ordnance and Gunnery. The problem was to "make internal" adjustments to the altimeter. Ninety-Seven The bench, pictured on the opposite page, was presented to the Naval Academy by the members of the Class of 1897 last year on Saturday, May 29th, as a Class Memorial. It is located on the old Second Class Walk; fifty feet behind the bronze statue of TECUMSEH, presented by the Class of 1891. It faces Bancroft Hall and is flanked on either side by "First" and "Second" class benches which were removed this year from the old site facing Maryland Avenue.

The Memorial is truly beautiful; of Georgia Limestone, it is as white as marble. It is twenty-two feet long, curved and perfectly plain except for dolphins and waves forming rhe arms ar the ends, and the Class Seal carved in the center of the back.

In the foundations an hermetically sealed "corner stone box" of copper was placed, containing an 1897 "Lucky Bag" donated by Admiral Leahy; the four Academy Registers for 1894, 1895, 1896 and 1897, wirh a complere individual record of all Naval Cadets of those years; a copy of the ARMY AND NAVY REGISTER, which contained a description of the Memorial; and new 1937 coins from one penny to one dollar.

The Presidenr of the Class of "NinetySeven," Mr. Joseph W. Powell, made rhe address, which is so inspiring rhat it is printed in order that our Alumni, who had the misfortune not to hear this truly wonderful speech and see this inspiring and thrilling sight, may read his words: "Admiral Sellers, Fellow Classmates of the Class of 1897, Guests, Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy: "The Class of 1897, now celebrating its 40th Reunion, today adds to the vocabulary of the midshipmen a name for a stone seat, "Exedra," a word new ro all except a few within the sound of my

Two reasons lie behind this gift; first, through it we wish to record our love for and devotion to this National Institute and to acknowledge our debt to it for the splendid training, physical, mental and moral, that we received during the four years that we lived here together; and second, we hope it will prove an inspiration to emphasize to you, the Regiment of Midshipmen, and to all those to follow you, that nothing finer or more enduring will enter your lives than the friendships of your Naval Academy days.

"And may rhe spirit of Comradeship, which has held together the Class of '97, cause each class to eagerly anticipate each of their reunions as an event of prime importance in their lives. High Naval Academy Athletic Awards to Midshipmen from Missouri and Indiana

Frank Lynch has the unusual distinction of being the only midshipman in the history of the Naval Academy to win three "N Stars" in one year. He accomplished this in the 1936-37 season when he was a member of the Navy teams which defeated the Army in football, basketball, and track.

In addition to holding top place in Navy athletics. Lynch also is the highest ranking midshipman in the regimental organization, being the Commander of the Regiment of Midshipmen.

Stadium at West Point on May 28, by the score of 10-3- This Victory gives Navy a clear title for the championship in intercollegiate circles, having defeared all college teams met this season which games include Yale, Princeton and Maryland.

Army played the best game of their season against Navy but Navy's superioriry in every department of the game was clearly shown. Army assumed that Navy would build their attack around individual dodging and decided to play a zone defense. Navy, instead, played a passing game and their stickwork was brillianr and clearly showed their calibre as a championship team. The game was hard fought, as Army-Navy games always are, and Army never at any time conceded defeat.

Navy made all their goals, except one, from an assist; in other words, rhe goal was made as a result of a pass to the man in position to score. Miller, Navy, was fed the ball in most instances due to his accurate ability to shoot. James, Navy's spectacular goalie, turned in a wonderful performance by not only stopping Army's shots but also running them out and getting clear of Army's attack men.

In the third quarter. Army made their most desperate artack with Finn and Sherburne, particularly, starring for the Cadets. But it was not enough for Navy held them and then ran them off their feet.

Lacrosse at the Academy has not be?n parricularly well supported for some unknown reason. Navy teams have always been among the leaders and rhe game is particularly well fitted to develop good football men. Coach "Dinty" Moore is not only one of the best coaches in the game but also has the respect and admiration of the boys on the squad.

Navy loses by graduation a number of the team who won the championship and now wear N-stars. Caprain Case, a star football player as well; Dubois and Player, who played at close defense; Bowers, Mann, Greene and Rindskopf, who SHIPMATE

played at close attack, are lost due to graduation.

Comdr. J. P. Compton, '16, an N-man in lacrosse during his days at the Academy, is the officer representative at the Academy and works hard with Coach Moore in developing the Navy team.

The Navy Athletic Association announced the appointment of Mr. Arthur Hendrix, of Lakeland, Florida, as coach of the tennis squad. Mr. Hendrix is a graduare of Florida Southern College, class of 1935. He was Southern Conference rennis champion in '33, '34, and '35.

He will report at the Naval Academy to assume his duties on July 1.

in coaching the first eight. The first captain of Navy Varsity Crew was Winston Churchill, '94, who now lives in Windsor, Vt. The first manager was David F. Sellers, '94, who now lives in Washington, D. C. The first 8-oared race was with the Neptune Boat Club of Baltimore over a 1 Vi mile course, and was won by Navy, time 8:44.

Harvard Winsl Harvard's brilliant varsity eight showed "it had it" by defeating the crews of Navy and Pennsylvania in that order in the Adams Cup Race held on the Severn on Saturday, May 21. In this race Navy started the race in their traditional style by starting at a high beat and jumping into the lead. Penn followed. At the quarter mile. Harvard, rowing a 40 srroke passed Penn and was pressing Navy. At the half mile, they were in the lead by about a quarter of a length. In the last half mile Navy raised its beat in a futile effort to catch Harvard, but Harvard was roo strong and finished going away a little more than a length ahead. Thus, Harvard took possession of the Adams Cup for rheir first time since this race was originated. Harvard had the best crew on the river and undoubredly, the best short-distance crew in the East. Congratulations Harvard!

In the Plebe event, Harvard's Freshmen, a great lot of boys who had come up from schools where rowing is one of their sports and in which they had gained experience, defeated the field composed of Navy and Penn in that order. The Freshmen led the Plebes by a length with the Penn Freshmen finishing about three and one-half lengths behind.

by Bill Ingram, added another N star classic to the athletic history of the Academy on Saturday, May 28, by defeating Army, 6-1.

Navy played an errorless game and played heads-up baseball. Bruckel did the pitching for the Navy while Davis, the Cadets star, started for Army.

Navy defeated Army at Thompson Stadium on May 28, by the close score of 70-56. The Navy rolled up an advantage of 46-26 in the track events, which was prediaed, but Army held the edge in the field events. Over 4,000 spectators stayed to the very last to see the most exciting meet held for a long time and it was not until almost the last event of the day that Navy's victory was assured.

In the end. Navy won nine first places to the Cadets five. In track events. Navy won five of the eight events. The events won by Navy were: mile run, 440, 100, 220, 220 low hurdles, shotput, javelin throw and broad jump. Coach Thompson, Dalron, Navy's captain, and the boys on the Navy team are to be congratulated on their excellent showing. The Army had nor losr a meer this year and came to Crabtown intent on adding another victory and more A-srars ro rheir collection.

Army was first to score. Durbin, Army's lead-off man, opened the game by singling. He stole second, and went to third as Weinnig flied out to righr field. Kaspar then singled to score Durbin with what was their only run of the game. Navy went along quietly for the first two innings. Then in the third with two away Thompson singled, stole second, and came home on McGuinness' single. In the fourth with two away, Navy again scored a run. Powell doubled.

Saunders, Army's shortstop, heaved a wild peg to first after scooping up Woodings grounder and Powell scored.

In the fifth Navy added another tally with two away. Thompson singled. On a steal Army's catcher heaved the apple to center field and Tommy went on to third. McGuinness fouled our. Cooke singled, scoring Thompson. Then rhe seventh. With one out, Thompson beat out a hit in the infield, his third of the day. He then stole second, his third sreal of the day. McGuinness again fouled out to make it two away. Cooke singled to score Tommy with his third run for the day. Cooke went on to second when Army's left fielder let his hit go between his legs. Ingram dropped a perfecr bunr, Cooke going to third. On rhe next pitch, Ingram srarted for second and Army's shortstop moved over to take the anticipated throw, but Mann drove a grounder through short, both Cooke and Ingram scoring. Davis, Army's pircher went to the showers. Army's captain, Lipscomb, took over the burden, stopping the fray.

One Big Inning

Navy had one big inning and that in their first appearance at the plate in the game, to beat Georgetown 4-3 on Saturday, May 21. In that inning Navy did all their scoring, Thompson, leading off, gor on when Georgetown's second baseman lost his high fly in the sun. He took second on a passed ball. McGuinness singled to center but Tommy was held at third. Lem Cooke fouled out and Ingram rripled ro right to score Tommy, and Mac. Ingram coming home when the throw-in was juggled in the infield. Petrosky, Georgetown's pitcher, then lost the range walking Mann, Wooding, and Anderson. Bruckel rhen singled. Wooding should have scored with Mann but was out due to slow base running.

Georgetown scored rwo in the fifth and one in the ninth. Bruckel pitched the game for Navy, allowing but five hits in After the first inning, Army never the game. double winners in rhe meet. Fike also took second in the shotput to be the leading scorer for the day. Cutts, Navy, and Goodall, Virginia, put on the most exciting event of the day in the 880. In this race the lead changed three times in the last quarter mile. Cutts finally winning out by about five yards.

Tennis Navy defeated West Virginia in tennis on Saturday, May 21, by the score of 9-0. The boys lost one set in this match, Scott taking the second set of his match with Bill.

Vamarie Wins!

The Vamarie, skippered by Captain Shafroth, '08, Commander Vanderkloot, '13, as First Mate, Commander Cormoly, '14, who handles the wheel with Vanderkloot, and a crew of Midshipmen, opened their 1938 season by winning their event in the Gibson Island race held Sunday, May 22. A good breeze prevailed during the 16-mile race and the Naval Academy Yacht Club colors flew at the masthead indicating that the Vamarie had won.

Captain Shafroth and his crew are working hard in prepararion for the NewportBermuda race to be run on June 21. Congrarularions ro the skipper and crew of the Vamarie, and best of luck on the Bermuda race.

Golf Navy's golf team lost to Washington and Lee in their marches which were played on the Annapolis Roads course on Saturday, May 21, 51/-31/. Every match was so closely contested that the eighteenth hole decided the match.

Lacrosse Navy shellacked Pennsylvania in their lacrosse game on Saturday, May 21, score 14-0. Navy's stickmen are headed for the championship. They have Army to take before that river is crossed. Navy scored almost at will and in every period.

Coach "Dinty" Moore used every substitute he had in the game, saving his stars for the Army when they meet their traditional enemies on the plains at West Point on May 28. Navy has a great team and deserves great credit for their wonderful game this season.

"Also the Boston Branch will hold a luncheon on Saturday, June 18, at the Naval Air Base, Squanrum, Mass., at 12:30 o'clock, later inspecting the Base equipment and participating in the flight maneuvers as practiced by Reserve Officers.

"The Boston Branch is a live organization of thirteen years standing and 16

holds four evening meetings a year, as well as monthly Round Table luncheons.

Captain W. H. Stayton, '81, a classmate of the late Admiral Uriu, spoke briefly concerning the biography.

The Secretary-Treasurer read the financial statement for rhe past year (1937), The statement showed that the Trust Fund, which is invested, amounted to $5,134.99; the working fund showed a balance of $4,298.76. The report was approved and the president directed that a board composed of members who were elected to the next Trustees Board examine and certify the accounts.

The next order of business was the nomination and election of Officers and Trustees for the coming year. Two slares were nominared and proxies recorded.

W. E. Brandt, '11, was recognized by the chair and gave a fine ralk on the affairs of the Association and some differences that had come into being. He pointed out how forrunate the Association was to have a man of the calibre of Captain Stayton as the President of the Association. Captain Stayton, visibly moved, rose, rhanked Brandt for his kind expression of confidence. He rhen went on to point out what each alumnus owed to the Naval Academy. His remarks, as well as those of Brandr, broughr forth a tremendous ovation.

H. McCoy Jones, '19, was then recognized by the chair. He made a motion that the slate as proposed by him be withdrawn, which motion was seconded by

Harry Little, '12, and was carried. Harry Little then moved that the election be declared unanimous, which was seconded

by H. McCoy Jones, and was carried unanimously.

Bryson Bruce, '07, was then recognized and after explaining certain changes in the Constitution and By-Laws, made a motion that they be adopted. H. H. Little, '12, seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.

Commodore T. D. Griffin, '76, and Dean M. E. Cooley, '78, were then introduced to the members as the oldest members present at the meeting. The members arose and gave them a tremendous ovation.

Upon motion, which was seconded and carried, the 1938 Annual Meeting adjourned and all hands proceeded ro the luncheon at the Officers' Club.

The new by-laws will become effective on July 1, 1938. They will be found in the 1938 Register of Graduates, which is now in the hands of the printer and should reach you on or about the first of July.

Purnell delivered a delightful oration anent the duties of each classmate stationed in Washington and in Annapolis. To quote Walter Heiberg, "Should our best wishes be converted into breezes, Shafroth will put the Vamarie across the Bermuda finish line first, with other contenders still to be sighted on the horizon." "It wasn't before the speech-making became general, as is the habit of our "unorganized class of 'rugged' individualists."

Walter Heiberg thanked SHIPMATE for rhe norice of the 1908 party in the June issue. He closed his letter with the following remarks: "It will take All Hands, and 1908 musters at their stations, that the Alumni Association may— Straddle-the-target."

Admiral Wilson Brown the Superintendent of the Naval Academy, accepted on behalf of the Naval Academy and the Regiment of Midshipmen.

Admiral Albert Gleaves was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 1st, 1858, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy with the Class of 1877.

During the Spanish-American War he commanded the destroyer Cushing, having been assigned to duty guarding rhe cable berween Havana and Key Wesr.

During rhe administration of Presidenr Theodore Roosevelt he commanded the Dolphin and the Mayflower as a lieutenant commander.

In 1907, while on duty as inspector in charge of the Torpedo Station at Newporr, he was senr abroad to study foreign methods of torpedo manufacture and upon his return established the first Government torpedo factory.

In 1909 Admiral Gleaves was promoted to captain and the following year assigned to command the North Dakota.

In 1915 he was promoted to rear admiral and given command of the Destroyer Squadron of rhe Atlantic Fleet.

The Naval Academy Association of Chicago held its last evening meeting until next fall on May 27. The Naval Reserve Armory, splendidly isolated at the foot of Randoloh Street on Lake Michigan, was the scene of the local disorders.

All hands went enthusiastically into Condition One in the locker room before dinner and all systems were well lined up when the soup course was reported steaming dead ahead. A few of the first loaders had by this time gone into Condition Two and complained of low visibility but they had no difficulty in maintaining constant communications and the ensuing action at the table was in general, efficient and accurate, although in some instances daring.

After dinner, and purely as an experiment to determine in what way, if any, the meetings can be improved, a few of the more valiant ones went into Condition Three, but it soon became apparent that this was too strenuous an exercise for the great majority of the members, many of whom have to work for a living, and as a result, the Chicago Association is confining its fall schedule to Condition One events, with the date left open on the occasion of the Army-Navy game.

There is a better side to the Chicago members, however, and it shows itself at the Wednesday luncheons in the Blue Fountain Room of the La Salle Hotel. There, in Chicago's loop, at high noon every Wednesday the former Gentlemen of the Regiment assemble in an alcove all to themselves in the name of sobriety, good food and good company.

There you will have the pleasure of meeting not only the Naval Academy men who live around here but also many of those who pass this way from time to time. These luncheons at the La Salle, which has become the Navy Hotel in Chicago, will be continued throughout the summer.

The regular monthly meeting of the Los Angeles Branch was held in the Los Angeles Athletic Club, after the dinner on the 1st of June. Comdr. W. G. Greenman, '12, the Inspeaor of the Naval Oil Reserves in California, gave a most interesting talk on the history and operation of these reserves and showed on a map their extent and possibilities as a future safeguard for the oil supply of the Navy. All hands have heard from time to time about these important, natural, storage reservoirs but never have had the pitture so well displayed as Bill Greenman put it over.

It is hoped that he writes an article for the Institute for the benefit of the Service.

Regular monthly business meeting is held at 6:30 p.m., the first Wednesday of each month at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
