Shopping local isn’t just for food anymore. The Open Art Society, which is based in Durham, pioneered our first community-supported art program. Seven artists – hailing from Durham, Chapel Hill, Pittsboro and Siler City – created 50 works each to be distributed to just 50 members. The program has garnered national acclaim, which means similar concepts are sure to follow in its footsteps. For $250, a share in this first art-based, rather than agriculture-based, CSA would make a special gift for a true art lover. D u r h a m

TOWELS 2 TURKISH “They’re meant for use in Turkish bath

houses, but these are so versatile. Use them as a picnic blanket, a table covering or curtains. Get really creative and wrap a gift with one!” Nomadic Trading, $10 to $35 (sizes vary) DAILY CALENDAR 3 MAGNETIC “My 4-year-old nephew, Brendan, is at a

perfect age to appreciate this Melissa & Doug toy. I can see him planning his Saturdays of swimming, soccer and birthday parties now.
