NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL VILLAGE STUDENT DORMITORIES Boston, Massachusetts Kyu Sung Woo Architects 2006-08 1200 bed dormitory comprised of three connected buildings with single- and double-unit dorm suites on the North, East and West sides of the site; a 5-story office building and ground-level retail on the South side; and an elevated rooftop courtyard above a central dining facility, accessible from each of the other four buildings at the second level. The East tower runs parallel with Forsythe Street, enhancing the figureground relationship between the new dorm and the adjacent Ruggles T-Station overpass.

Design team member: SD through early CA and shop drawings; coordination of exterior systems including curtain wall, precast and metal panels, windows, mechanical penthouses, office and commercial building.

XS HOUSE DESIGN-BUILD Houston, Texas Rice Building Workshop 2002-03 This 500 square foot residence is a modern interpretation of the shotgun style house that is typical of Houston’s historic Third Ward. The design features an adjustable pier foundation on threaded pin connections, an open plan with a cabinet wall that contains all the storage as well as mechanical equipment, and a polycarbonate-lined bathroom that forms a lightbox core.

Design and construction team member: millwork design, shop drawings, fabrication, and installation; lightbox core design and construction, finish hardware.

Received AIA Houston Honor Award 2003.

CKFR MEMORIAL ART INSTALLATION Santa Rosa, California Seth Clarke Design 2011-12 Memorial commission designed to honor a church parishioner whose great loves were gardening, quilting and music. The composition is based upon a system of color families and evolving shapes that behave as a tapestry of light whose pattern transitions from quilt to canopy of foliage. Originally planned as an outdoor sky-lit feature, but instead reconceived as interior collage installation to reduce costs.

Nine bedroom house now sleeps twenty-six for large family gatherings. SIX FRESHMAN DORMITORIES AT BOWDOIN COLLEGE Brunswick, ME Kyu Sung Woo Architects 2005-06 Complete gut renovation of six Mckim Mead & White dormitory buildings. Conversion to center loaded corridor scheme with suite layouts (two bedrooms plus common room) new windows, roofing, accessible bathrooms, elevators, fire protection and mechanical systems.

Design team member: Design Development through Construction Administration for all six buildings in three phases, including client presentations, construction documents, weekly construction observation, submittal/ shop drawing review.

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF BEIRUT OLAYAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Beirut, Lebanon Machado & Silvetti Associates 2003-04 Completed in 2009, this building acts as a connecting element between the sea wall steps and the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, with a traversable ground plane consisting of four enclosed but fundamentally porous and transparent spaces. The pre-cast hanging screen system is colored to evoke the native Forni limestone and performs like the wooden mashrabiya screens characteristic of the region.

Schematic Design team member: Personal contributions include facade design and precedent studies, plan / site plan development, as well as 3D modeling.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT CENTER Houston, Texas Senior Thesis, Spring 2003 This water treatment facility embraces the increased visibility that comes with placing such large infrastructure on the hem of downtown Houston’s greatest natural asset, the Buffalo Bayou system. It addresses the demand for new amenities along the bayou edge by utilizing its effluent to irrigate a constructed wetland habitat: once processed through the various cleansing stages (blue arrows), the water flow doubles back (yellow arrows) onto a series of terraces, superimposing the mechanical with the organic such that both may be experienced in tandem.

5TH WARD REDEVELOPMENT MASTER PLAN Houston, Texas 5th Year Studio Fall 2004 The disjointed fabric of Houston’s 5th Ward is characterized by “T” intersections and dead ends, with deep pockets of abandoned lots and overgrown wetland terrain. The proposed system of walks, shade structures, and satellite buildings intends to draw pedestrians in, provide way finding as well as increased visibility, and generally aid in the discovery and use of such pockets— not as dead ends but as points of destination and delight.

ď ľ ZAC RUNGIS MASTER PLAN 13th Arrondissement, Paris Study Abroad RSAP 2005 The proposed master plan converts an abandoned rail yard into a mixed use community center and park.

Uneven topography combined with derelict conditions make this site a barrier to local communities that live and work on either side of a physical divide. The plan is designed to function as a membrane on the outer ring of the city, employing bridge ways and paths to both funnel foot traffic in one direction toward mass transit or, in the opposition direction, to disperse commuters to the adjacent residential neighborhood. Office and residential buildings are kept to the site periphery, preserving a continuous plane of park and recreational amenities below to serve the local residents.

WALKER ART MUSEUM BOWDOIN COLLEGE Brunswick, Maine Machado & Silvetti Associates 2003-04 Competition entry seeks to re-conceptualize the experience of existing Mckim Mead and White architectural promenade by inverting the entry sequence: instead of climbing the exterior stairs to enter the rotunda, a recessed fore-court entrance is proposed to create a subterranean, newly accessible entrance. Dark and inhospitable basement space could be reclaimed for lobby space and support functions, allowing visitors to ascend into the rotunda as the destination to their path.
