Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

you hav ea choice where to sPend your mo ney

ur Put yo ere y wh mone s ouse i h r u yo When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.

live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.

helP the environment Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.

If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!

get better service Local businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

Small business ow ners live locally and are therefore more invested in the future of our neig hbourhoods. Loca l entrepreneurs ar e also the largest employer nationa lly and they prov ide the most jobs to new residents.

Artisans Return to Panorama

A Touch of Saltspring Craft Show The wonderful tradition of ‘A Touch of Saltspring’ returns to the Peninsula for another year. This annual craft fair has grown from a small group of Saltspring Island Artisans in 1991, to a staggering 230 over 20 years later. The central idea behind the 3-day extravaganza is to bring together high-quality, artisan-crafted goods under one roof. This year there will be 230 vendors from all over Saltspring, BC and Alberta. You will find hand-turned wooden bowls, exquisite leather goods. Prints and cards featuring Canadian wildlife and scenery. There’s also delicacies created in BC kitchens: jams and jellies, fudge, truffles and other decadent goodies. Textile artists load up their stalls with colourful scarves and hats as well as many seasonal decorations. There will be pottery, jewellery and many, many diverse items. The 2014 show will be the 10th year it is held at Panorama Recreation Centre. Using the huge space of the indoor tennis arena, the craft show has a festive atmosphere, with so many people, vendors and visitors alike under one roof. There is on-site catering so you can stay all day! The show is a great opportunity to shop for Christmas, but also a rare chance to find so many unique, hand-crafted items all in one place. To ensure the event runs smoothly visitors are advised not to try and park at the recreation centre itself. There is a park-and-ride shuttle service provided from Rotary Park, off Canora Road. Admission to the 3-day event is $5. A Touch of Saltpring – Christmas Show 2014, Friday December 5th, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday December 6th, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. & Sunday December 7th, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Panorama Recreation Centre, 1885 Forest Park Drive, North Saanich.

10th Annual Saanichton Community Christmas by Bob Cratchit

The idea of coming together with

friends and family during the holiday season to share a fresh cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate creates a warm feeling inside most of us, perhaps not Mr. Scrooge. The Village of Saanichton takes the gathering experience and goes one step further, by bringing the entire community together with their annual ‘Community Christmas Event’. This year the event happens: Saturday December 6th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Saanichton Village slows down a little on that day so children can enjoy a pancake breakfast with Santa at St. Mary’s Church starting at 9:00 a.m. (courtesy of the Central Saanich Lions), have a photo with Santa himself (by donation to the food bank), walk the Tree Trail with the family, take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage, decorate a gingerbread man at the Saanich Pioneer Museum, listen to some live local music, but most of all ... become more familiar with the people in the community. This will be the 10th Annual event, with all proceeds going to the Sidney Lions Food Bank, a worthy cause all year round. There are over 10 trees on the Christmas Tree Trail, starting at 9:30 a.m. and

is a wonderful tradition, with most of the businesses in the local area putting up a splendid tree for the big and small kids to enjoy. Families are given a map to follow, with the kids collecting stamps at each location, and sometimes a little cup of hot chocolate or treat! The event is presented by The Saanichton Village Association, Seaside Magazine, and the local businesses community in the Saanichton area. For the third year, there will be a ‘Christmas Craft Fair & Market’ in the parking lot behind Fresh Cup Café, where Christmas Headquarters is located, 1931 Mt. Newton X Rd. These local crafters and artisans, bakers and food producers will have seasonal items to buy for those that like high quality, locally made products. For many this event has become a cornerstone of their seasonal Christmas Tradition, and there are a number of guest appearances with elves, Rudolph, and Santa in attendance. Be sure to visit Christmas Headquarters at Fresh Cup Café 1931 Mt. Newton X Rd. to drop-off your donation to the food bank, get a free coffee, Christmas cookie, Tree Trail Map, and spend some quality family time … because everyone loves horses and Santa!
