An Afternoon at the Ballpark to Usher in a New Era

A May 31 investiture celebration will honor Carlos O. Cortez, Ph.D., and officially introduce him to the community as chancellor of the San Diego Community College District. The free, public event, “A home run for social justice and inclusion,” will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with gates open at 3:30 p.m., at Petco Park in downtown San Diego. The afternoon program will honor the District’s commitment to student success, academic excellence, social justice, equity, and inclusion, while looking forward to a future with new traditions and enhanced educational opportunities in the community.

Performances from the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir, the San Diego College of Continuing Education Barbershop Quartet, and ballpark organist Bobby Cressey will entertain guests between remarks from Chancellor Cortez, local religious leaders, and government representatives.

Attendees are encouraged to show off their San Diego spirit and come dressed representing any of the District’s four colleges or favorite local sports team. Ballpark concessions will be available for purchase to enjoy during the program.

An RSVP is required and can be found, along with updated information about the event, at sdccd.edu/investiture2022. The event will be underwritten entirely by sponsors, including presenting sponsors Roger Frey and the San Diego Padres.
