Pres. Lee Sopwith 208-447-8282 leesoppy@gmail.com

Sadly, SCOV lost a very talented artist with the passing of Lorraine Buck at the end of June. Lorraine was a past Clay Club board president and a member of Open Studio Artists. Her talent as a painter and as a clay artist was incredible. The SCOV Library has her wonderful horse painting on display. Lorraine will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

Clay

The Clay and Glaze Studios are quieter in the summer and the pace is more relaxed. Lessons on the wheel are available to current members, and a mini reference library is available for checkout in the Glaze Studio. Want to try something new with your glazes? Try spraying the glaze onto your piece. Need help? Just ask.

Studio maintenance and other chores continue during our warm season. We thank our kiln masters and glaze teams for allowing those of us who remain on-site to continue imagining, creating and enjoying our craft during these summer months.

Fri., 9 am-1 pm, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

During the summer months SCOV artists spend a little more time inside working on our art. If you’re looking for a place to not only create, but meet other artists and perhaps get some coaching in colored pencil or scratchboard, come visit any Friday morning and check us out.

Knit and Crochet

Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com

Mon., 2:30-4:30 pm, Activity Center/Hohokam

If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats.

If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one; no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. ode

Gourd Art

Susan Potter 253-722-4295

Mon., 1-4 pm, Fri., 9 am-noon, Lapidary Room

Sand pictured in this display was collected from D-Day beaches where Americans landed June 6, 1944. The sand was collected by the named members of the Modeler’s Club and donated to the Veteran’s Club. We not only build replicas of planes, trains, automobiles, ships and more, we discuss and reveal the history behind these items and the events that highlight them. We have a monthly “How goes it” mixer in the Modeler’s Room on the fourth Friday of the month, 8:30 am. It’s very informal and building models is not a requirement. See above for our regular business meeting. We would love to welcome you, so join us to enjoy some coffee, donuts and share history. You may find something to explore, build and share with us.

Who would have thought to make pendants from a gourd? Our gourd artists have been busy doing just that. These beautiful pendants start out as a rectangle cut from a gourd. Then various techniques are applied depending on the design the artist has chosen. Dye or paint are used as the coloring agents. Visit our gourd artists in the Artisan Center. We are always happy to show you around. Even better, consider joining our club. We have everything you need to get started.

Japanese Flower Arranging

Donald Marier 612-757-8373 dolmar21@gmail.com

Jan.-May, Second and Fourth Mon., 2-4 pm, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

Open Studio Artists

Pres. Carol Nagel 520-825-3097 carolm93@comcast.net

Tues., Wed., Thu. and Sat. 9 am-1 pm, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

The Art Studio is very quiet over the summer months. While you are away enjoying the sights, take photos, make sketches with colored pencils or try watercolor or acrylic. Summer can be a good time to spread your wings and try something new.

Room Orientation and Pfaff Training Lesley Monroe 509-947-5669

It is quieter now in the Sewing Room as some clubs take a break and return in the fall. It might be time to consider getting trained to be a monitor. Contact Chris Ludwig.

It is also a good time to be reminded that everyone using the room during this time:

• Must be an HOA resident or have renter status and be current on dues: $5/year.

• Must have a monitor present when using the room. You can check ahead at www.signup.com.

• Must have had room orientation and training on the machine you wish to use. If either is needed, please call Leslie Monroe 509-947-5669 for Pfaff machines or see Sue Lane for serger machine training.

The requirements are in place to keep everyone safe and protect our SCOV club status. Enjoy the season and have a wonderful summer.

Sculpture

Dale Foster 520-825-0707 fosterdale1248@gmail.com Mon., 9 am-5 pm, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

The Sculpture Club meets Mondays, Catalina Vista/Art Studio. If you are interested in becoming a member or learning more about our club, stop in or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces are in the glass case and Art Studio window inside Catalina Vista, the display case outside of the Library and locations inside the Library.

This hanging totem was recently completed by Christine Takerian. Christine joined the Sculpture Club after moving to SCOV several years ago, but decided to go back to work. Recently, Christine retired and rejoined our club. This is the first project that she completed since her return and she started it several years ago. Last month’s article was about using embellishments to enhance a sculpture. Christine did this by using beads from jewelry that she purchased from a thrift store. She also used braided picture hanging wire to string together the sculpture.

If you have been wanting to check out what goes on in the Sewing Room, or have never been to our corner spot in the Artisan Center, now would be a great time to take a tour. Any one of us would able to show you the new sewing machines and perhaps you can see a demonstration of the quilting and embroidery machines. We would love to show you our closet, filled with donations to the many organizations we support. It's pretty impressive what happens in our little corner room. Come by Monday or Thursday, 9 am-noon, and take a look.

Carrie Wiley 360-734-5952 ecwiley@gmail.com

Tue., 9-11 am, Artisan Center/Sewing www.scovhookers.weebly.com

The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets on Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. If you are interested in our group, stop by the Sewing Room between 9-11 am. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People involved in other arts using fiber are invited and encouraged to join our group.

Shown at left is the beginning stages of Coni Arseneau's dining table runner. She plans to use the 48 inch by 16¾ inch runner as a hot pad by putting thermal pad material between the rug and backing. As you can see in the picture, she sketched out the design using the picture on the right as the inspiration. She is transferring the design from paper to rug warp by hand, using a fine tipped marker and lots of patience.

Silversmith and Lapidary

Pres. Rich Rozehnal 520-638-6368 rozehnal@comcast.net

Summer shop hours: Mon.-Fri., 9 am-noon, Artisan Center/Lapidary Room

Our featured artist of the month is Coko Brown. She is a visual artist and musician originally from San Diego, CA. Working in a variety of mediums it is not uncommon to see more than one medium in a piece of her art. Recently, the Silversmith and Lapidary Club caught her attention and she joined the club last April. Inspired by nature, many pieces that Coko creates have elements of mountains, oceans or deserts in them. While getting her feet wet with this new medium, Coko is creating wearable pieces. However, her intention is to create larger works that can be hung on the walls or freestanding multimedia works of art. Coko is a member of the Woodworkers, Clay and Stained/Fused Glass clubs. She is also a painter who works in several mediums.

Coko's beautiful first silversmithing project

SCOV residents interested in joining our club should visit the shop and speak with the monitor about training. New member training is held monthly on the second Tuesday and Wednesday.

It’s a matter of fact. Those of us who work with glass experience a moment of nervousness from time to time. This was certainly the case for Julie Cherry. The work on her original glass clock was finally completed, and it was time to drill a hole through multiple layers of glass so that she could insert the hands. We who work with glass realize how quickly glass can break. Congratulations, Julie, on your success in completing this. With her love of the lines and clarity of glass, Julie attended a class at the Tucson Sonoran Glass School. She was inspired, and decided to join our glass club over two years ago. Currently, Julie is revising our mold photo album, making it more user-friendly. Thanks, Julie. Apart from glass creating, Julie is a member of our Hiking Club, where she is a guide. She recently became a member of the SCVC Foundation.

We are a highly organized club filled with very giving and helpful members. Please visit us soon.

The SCOV Not So Silent Book Club is growing, and we hope you will join in the fun. No books are assigned. Once a month we each talk about a book we've been reading. It can be a military history, a tender love story, the latest best seller, a slim volume of a favorite poet, whatever. We go around the room: did you love the book, the plot, the characters, a lyrical passage? If a movie was made, was it better or worse than the book? You may hear of a book you really would like to read. Sometimes we give away or loan books. Come celebrate your love of reading with us on the second Sunday of the month, 2:30-4 pm, Desert Oasis/Ocotillo.

Mon., 10 am-noon, Zoom

Persian poet Majid Naficy penned this beautiful, hopeful poem honoring Iranian women protesting their lack of freedom.

“The Day Chador Is Not Forced

The day will come when my sisters / No longer wear forced chadors. Let that day be in summer / So that we can go for a picnic.

We will wrap the first chador as a bundle / And carry our goods in it. We will spread the second as a carpet / And sit down on it. We will use the third as a dining cloth / And eat our meals around it.

Then I will climb a mulberry tree / And my four unveiled sisters / Will each take a corner of the fourth chador / So that I can shake mulberries down on it.

How delicious it will be to eat mulberries / When my sisters no longer veil. On that day, chadors return to chests / And when posterity asks about this rite It finds only mothballed fabrics.”

Newcomers are always welcome to express their personal feelings in poetic form.

Caring for dogs in Arizona summer can be tricky. They need their exercise and can be affected by heat. The sidewalks and streets are hot to the touch. Most people know to check the sidewalk heat and make sure it is safe for those paws.

People tend to use the dog park early morning or early evening when it’s bearable. The dogs may play a bit, but energy is usually not as brisk. Water at the park helps. We have hoses to refresh the dishes, but also remind the dogs’ people to bring water for themselves.

Mavros and Bella saying something to each other

Our dog park provides a spot for our pups to enjoy having a change of scenery, scents and socializing. When it’s cooler and shadier, they do play together.

Remember to pick up after your pup and leave the park clean and safe for others.

Summer rains are upon us; the word monsoon refers to a system of winds that changes seasonally, bringing wet and dry periods to a region. In the Sonoran Desert, the summer monsoon consists of winds from the sea flowing inland to fill the partial vacuum created by rising continental air warmed by the summer sun. These winds bring moisture. The belt of westerlies shifts north in the summertime, allowing moist air from Baja California to move into the region and bring monsoon rain. Enjoy this time of renewal and hope in the desert.

Pilates

Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com

Mon., 3 pm, Thu., 1:30 pm, AFC/Studio

Are you a golfer? Twisting on drives, squatting and leaning over to pick up balls? Golf movements are required and repeated. The results can be overused weak muscles and imbalances affecting legs, hips, arms, shoulders and back. Over 60? Your game is probably affected with shorter, less accurate drives. Stamina decreases and muscle strains, pulls and tears can occur. For years, elite golfers (Tiger Woods, etc.) have turned to Pilates, an essential training tool to stay balanced and improve performance. Like golf shots, Pilates is based on movement from the body’s center or core (trunk, shoulders, abdomen, pelvis). As you strengthen your core, hip rotation improves your range of motion and back stability. Other results include powerful, more accurate golf shots and a symmetrically muscled, flexible, strong body. Pilates is a full body exercise with very little joint strain. Call Mary or just come by and watch a class.
