Hannah. Each woman had her own personality and giftedness, yet each provides a portrait of strength in faith, character and hope. In a time when everyone did what was right in their own eyes, these women looked to the Lord and found their strength in Him. They show us every woman has a part to play in the kingdom of God.” Call Elaine if you have questions. Hope to see you in the fall. Genealogy Pres. Our club provides an opportunity for discussions of challenging ideas using the anthologies published by the Great Books Foundation. The topics and genres vary widely, but the conversation is always thoughtful and lively. We meet twice a month, October through April, and will start a new volume, Great Conversations 3, in the fall.

Newcomers are welcome. For more information, please contact Barbara or Maryfaith. ILR - Institute of Learning in Retirement Pres. Mary Lee Fitzgerald fitzgerald.marylee@gmail.com www.suncityilr.com

Registration is now open for ILR’s fall term beginning October 7. You can find descriptions of the six courses that will be offered, as well as registration information, on the ILR website. Three courses are in-person: “Waking Giant” with Jim Williams, “The Dust Bowl” with Mike Curran and an evening class, “A Random Walk Through Early Music” with Garry Buck. “The U.S. in a New Geopolitical World” by Don Sheppherd will be a hybrid class. “Straightforward and Uncomplicated Photography” by Ed Caine and “Hidden Gems of America’s National Park System” by David Kroese will be on Zoom. Registration deadline is August 15. “Learning on the Move,” a new initiative for off-site learning experiences is also detailed on the website. The popular Samplers programs return in-person in October on Thursday afternoons in Catalina Vista and are open to all residents of SCOV. Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-331-1092 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 10 AM-Noon, WC1, Zoom meetings first Mon. of the month

American poet Stephen Crane (1871-1900), mostly known for his short stories and highly acclaimed novel The Red Badge of Courage, also wrote excellent pithy poems, quotable as wisdom from a well-known sage. Poets of today might strive to copy his style, much as painter copy masters of the past. The first lines serve as titles in these examples:

In the desert

I saw a creature, naked, bestial, / Who, squatting upon the ground,

Held his heart in his hands, / And ate of it.

I said, “Is it good, friend?” / “It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;

“But I like it / “Because it is bitter,“ / And because it is my heart.”

A man said to the universe:

“Sir, I exist!” / “However,” replied the universe, “The fact has not created in me / A sense of obligation.”

Resident poets are welcome to join our Zoom meetings where we happily learn from each other, as well as published poets of today and yesterday. Natural Health and Wellness Sherokee Ilse 520-818-3279 sherokeeilse@yahoo.com Third Wed., Nov.-Apr. or May www.scovwellness.com

Did you notice the unusual square illustration located next to the SCOV Technology Club heading? This is called a QR code. In reality, it is very similar to the two dimensional bar code you see on grocery items when you check out. In the case of a grocery store, the two-dimensional bar code tells the item scanner what the item is, and then the check-out scanner/computer will determine a cost from a behind-the- scenes database.

A QR code does much the same, but because it is a three-dimensional bar code, it can hold considerably more information. In the case of the SCOV Technology Club, if you scan the QR code (and if you have the correct software available in your computer, phone or iPad), it will automatically take your browser to the class schedule of the SCOV Technology Club. But it can do even more: QR codes can be used to share links in advertising, passwords and even confidential banking information.

If you, your club or organization is interested in utilizing or learning more about these QR codes, look for the QR classes we will be offering later in the year.

Summer in our area is hot and most dogs (and their people) come to the park in early mornings and early evenings. So many members are traveling or in their other home that we have fewer dogs in the park. The dog park participants who are here enjoy having a change of scenery, scents and socializing. When it’s cooler and shadier, the dogs play together.

When folks start returning to SCOV, they’ll be greeted by our new signage (pictured) and other finished projects. We are proud of our joint efforts to keep it a clean and friendly place. Members donate time, energy and even needed items. Thank you for that.

Remember to pick up after your pup and leave the park clean and safe for others.

Popcorn, cookies and beverages will be served. We will be seeing Tango Shalom, about an Orthodox Jewish rabbi from New York who is asked by a tango dancer to enter a dance competition. If they win, the prize money will save his school from bankruptcy. How can he do this without compromising his religious beliefs and moral code? Come see this hilarious and entertaining movie to find out. There is no charge for this event. Don’t forget to check our website for updated information and to learn more about our club. Join us. The Mindfulness Meditation Club continues to meet weekly through the summer, 3 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio. The summer format is shorter and includes discussion of a mindfulness reading, 30 minutes silent sitting meditation and ends with a brief loving kindness meditation. We encourage everyone to come regardless of their experience or schedule. It is completely acceptable to come or leave quietly at any time, based on your need. We welcome all to come and steep themselves in the insights that come from the stillness of silent meditation.

The Prepare & Share Dinner Club provides an enjoyable social evening monthly from November through March. You will get to know some of your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking (and eating) interesting food. Each monthly meal has a theme selected by the membership, e.g., French bistro, food from movies, etc. Photos of some of the dinners are available on the Prepare and Share website. The fall kick-off dinner on Monday, November 14, will be one of our few catered events. Information on the kick-off dinner and yearly membership renewals will be provided in October. If you have interest in our club or any questions, please email a club officer.

Thanks go to the volunteers at the polls on Election Day and also to those who worked the long, 15-hour day. You certainly answered the call for your civic duty.

It’s imperative now that we get to hear as many candidates as possible before the general election on November 8.
