WHY THE HAWKS WILL SOAR TO NBA FINALS

pril. October. November. All painful months for Atlanta fans. The playoffs are here yet again but this time there is a different aura surrounding the Atlanta Hawks. There is a different vibe; a different feel that has surrounded this team all season. The Hawks have home court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference; a rarity for a team that has been stuck in mediocrity. It’s time for Atlanta to make a statement. It’s time for them to take the next step. It’s normal to be panicky about the Hawks, but I’m here to tell you to take a deep breath and relax. I am going off on a limb and saying the most disregarded number one seed in NBA playoff history will do the “unthinkable” and win the Eastern Conference Finals.

The trendy and sexy pick all season long

has been the Cavaliers. Sure, they have the star power but sometimes in the playoffs it’s the whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Cleveland handed Atlanta a beat down in game nine of the season, 127-94. That loss along with an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the lowly Lakers ignited something within Atlanta. The Hawks started their rampage through the Eastern Conference and left in its warpath three convincing wins over the Cavs, so why can’t this Hawks team do the same thing in the playoffs?

Playoffs and the city of Atlanta have not gone well together, but just saying “We live in Atlanta” is not a good enough excuse to why the Hawks won’t make it to the NBA Finals. Injuries have been a concern and are a potential

ajor roster moves and a new coaching staff headlined by Dan Quinn has made M it easy to grasp the changes as this year’s

Falcons cross off another week of offseason workouts. The competition we expected to see within many key positions this offseason will only continue to intensify with each passing week, but if any player on this team is up for the challenge, it is linebacker Paul Worrilow.

This is the exact type of environment Worrilow has thrived in throughout his football career and the third-year pro plans to attack this offseason no differently.

“You always feel like you have something to prove each offseason,” Worrilow said. “And when you have a new coaching staff, that is going to weigh on your mind. You don’t have any credit. Everyone is coming in at the same level

and we are all competing for spots.”

Worrilow has led the team in tackles each of his first two seasons, compiling 270 combined tackles in his 32 games, but the corps of linebackers around him this offseason are the deepest it has been since the former Delaware Blue Hen was signed as an undrafted rookie in 2013.

On March 10, Atlanta added outside linebackers Justin Durant and Brooks Reed, boosting the total to 11 linebackers on the active roster. Worrilow has always been a fan of the process of preparing for each new season and when it comes to position battles, he knows the more competition there is, the better each player will get.

“You always feel that pressure of competition, especially with a big group, but it just makes everybody that much better,” Worrilow

Coach Budenholzer’s team system is deadly. An unselfish team that can lock you down in the postseason is a team no one would want to face.

Atlanta is the most complete team in the East. Void of “stars”, the Hawks let you choose your poison. Don’t want Millsap, Horford or Teague? Fine. Here is Kyle Korver and DeMarre Carroll driving you crazy with their shooting. Don’t like those options? How about Dennis Schroder, who is quietly turning the Jeff Teague/Schroder backcourt into a poor man’s Chris Paul and Eric Bledsoe situation.

Cleveland will not win the NBA Finals.

They will have to scrap their way to even get there. The Hawks have had their number. DeMarre Carroll befuddled LeBron James in their last matchup, harassing him into nine turnovers. Cleveland is not the elite defensive team Atlanta is and they don’t have the coaching to match up with Mike Budenholzer. LeBron and Kyrie Irving might get there’s but two men will not beat a Budenholzer coached team. Two long suffering cities might clash for a chance to lift their respective “curses”.

Chicago might be the only other team that could challenge the Hawks. Atlanta beat the

Bulls twice before losing in the final game of the season while calling the dogs off. Chicago is a tough-nosed defensive team but has struggled with injuries all season long. Derrick Rose looked good in game one against the Bucks, but it remains to be seen if he can grind out a long series against an equally tough defensive team. Jeff Teague and Dennis Schroder could give Rose headaches trying to chase them around the perimeter.

Jimmy Butler and Pau Gasol will be the cornerstones for Chicago. They will need to perform up to their season numbers to take down either the Hawks or Cavs. Atlanta will likely get an exhausted team in the Eastern Conference Finals. Chicago and Cleveland seem destined for a physical long series. It will be imperative for the Hawks to wipe the floor with the Nets in four and to take care of either Washington or Toronto in short manner also.

Whatever happens, be proud of the Hawks. It has been a great season but there is much to come on the horizon. As long as they make the ECF, they will have had a successful season. Atlanta is playing with house money, and I think they are going to cash it in into a NBA Finals appearance.

Coaching the linebackers will be 38-yearold Jeff Ulbrich, who left his defensive coordinator position at UCLA to become the Falcons linebacker coach this season.

Ulbrich played 10 seasons with the 49ers and the intensity of the young assistant and his familiarity to the game will be great fit for evaluating what could be the team’s deepest position battle.

“He is very intense,” Worrilow said when describing Ulbrich’s coaching style. “You can feel the intensity in our meeting room when he is explaining things and he’s been through it.

Anything he is telling you, like where you can take your chances and where you can cheat a little bit in the alignment is a huge benefit.”

Physically there are differences in Worrilow’s preparation for the season. He focused on adding size last offseason but has shifted his focus to improving his mobility this time.

“Mobility is something they (the coaching staff) want me to focus on and I’ve been working on that every morning, whether it’s 20 minutes or an hour,’’ he said. “I schedule it so I get here an hour-and-a-half early so I can get that in … strength and conditioning is a huge interest of mine. Even if I didn’t play football, working out would be a huge part of my life. “

There is no denying a lot has changed from Worrilow’s first offseason.

Now, he’s a married man carrying backto-back seasons of leading the team in tackling into the offseason, but the same determination and willingness to improve remains and it has a chance to fit nicely into the type of defense Quinn is building in Atlanta.

“This (Quinn’s) defense preaches intensity, attitude and effort and that is something I think I bring,” said Worrilow. “ I look forward to working on all the fundamentals of the things they are preaching and I think it is going to be a good offseason.”

As for the defensive schemes the linebackers will be running this season under Quinn, Worrilow is confident it will suit his style of play. After a couple weeks of going over the basic terminology and install, Worrilow has noticed that the defense this year is based more on effort than the amount of terminology and alignments.

“Through the first couple weeks, there is less volume from everything we have put in,” he said. “You can tell it is geared more on effort, the

THE DRAFT’S IMPACT ON THE NFC SOUTH

he Carolina Panthers became the first team T in NFC South history to repeat as division champions this past December, but it was the

7-9-1 record that the Panthers carried into the playoffs that confirms the importance of this year’s draft for the division as a whole. The race for the NFC South came down to the final weeks of the 2014 season and whichever team comes out of this year’s draft as winners, could gain an immediate and long-term upper hand.

All four teams have their own needs to fulfill and are in position to do so. The Tampa Bay Bucs have the No. 1 overall pick at their disposal but the Saints can make some serious noise as well with five draft choices in the first 78 picks. The Falcons will be looking for a pass rusher for the present and future to lead the franchise with the No. 8 pick and the Panthers can shore up the cornerback position and look for more protection for Cam Newton on the offensive line with its picks that includes three in the fifth round.

The Saints window is closing as Drew Brees sits at 36-years-old and they will be looking to draft guys that can come in and help right away. The team traded tight end Jimmy Graham, wide receiver Kenny Stills and guard

Ben Grubb and also cut linebacker Curtis Lofton, running back Pierre Thomas and cornerback Corey White. However, running back Mark Ingram was re-signed to a four-year, $16 million contract and C.J. Spiller was brought in to join him after five seasons in the Buffalo backfield. Brandon Browner was picked up at corner and inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe comes in to fill the void left by Lofton. Pro Bowl center Max Unger came from Seattle with the Graham trade and the offensive line will be built around him. The Saints are looking for a cornerback and a middle linebacker but it looks like finding a corner is the top priority.

Once the Saints get their top pick in, do not be surprised if they trade up, as the plan is clearly to build the strongest possible team now while Brees is still playing at a high level.

Tampa Bay has the longest list of current draft needs, but none are more important than finding a franchise quarterback and that is almost certainly where the No. 1 pick will go. They added defensive depth this offseason through free agency but primarily, the focus has been on that No. 1 selection. Linebacker Bruce Carter, defensive tackle Henry Melton and safety Chris Conte were added in mid-March and the

following week cornerback Sterling Moore was signed. All four of these signees spent last season on the Dallas Cowboys. Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota are the top 2 quarterback prospects on the radar for the top pick and although there might be more talented players in the draft at the less glamorous positions, teams in need of a franchise quarterback cannot pass on these guys, especially when you look at the list of less-impressive quarterbacks that will enter next year’s draft. When you have the No. 1 overall pick, it is either going to set up the franchise for the next couple years, or it can set the franchise back another couple years and that is what Tampa Bay will be drafting to avoid.

Carolina’s free agency has been directed towards finding guys that can help improve one of the worst special teams units in the NFL. Offensive tackles Michael Oher and Jonathan Martin were not signed for that purpose but they will certainly provide a boost in the trenches. Ted Ginn Jr. is back with the Panthers after getting sent to Arizona following the 2013 season and will serve as the team’s return man.

Defensive backs Kurt Coleman and Teddy Williams were signed as early free agents and can handle special teams duties on the coverage teams and on punt and kickoff return.

Running back Jordan Todman was signed after establishing himself as one of the league’s most consistent kick returners last year in Jacksonville and eight-year veteran linebacker Jason Trusnik was added to provide depth on defense but also for his reputation as a “special teams ace”.

Carolina will be looking for a pass rusher to replace now Dallas Cowboy Greg Hardy.

Hardy’s absence is not the gigantic loss most people assume it is because of his domestic violence case that could result in more missed games. The Panthers were not going to have much of choice besides turning the page and starting a new chapter. Carolina gutted its receiving corps last offseason but ended up striking gold in the draft with the towering Kelvin Benjamin and will be looking to continue building a young group of targets for quarterback Cam Newton through the draft. Speaking of Newton, he has ranked as one of the most-hit quarterbacks over the past few seasons so expect Carolina to add to the offensive line that improved with Martin and Oher through free agency. Carolina has the No. 25 overall pick but it could be what the team does with its three fifth round selections that determines the success of this year’s draft.

Atlanta’s fairy tale season still has one more chapter to write in the postseason, but Coach Bud can add one more accolade for this year’s team. The second-year head coach was named Coach of the Year after leading Atlanta to its best record in franchise history. He is the first Hawks coach since Lenny Wilkens to win the award.

The former UGA star has been the topic of discussion in NFL circles. Gurley’s draft stock has continued to rise but no one is quite sure where he will go. Todd McShay’s latest mock draft has him going sixth to the Jets, while others have him slipping to the second round.

A healthy Gurley is a great pick wherever he lands.

The Owls made the short trip down I-75 and defeated Georgia Tech 11-6 in baseball this Tuesday. Alex Liquori powered the Owls with 3 RBIs, while Chris Erwin picked up his fourth win of the season.

With the victory, KSU splits the season series with the Jackets one game apiece.

The Hawks are off to a strong start in the playoffs as they took down the Brooklyn Nets in Game 1. Kyle Korver and DeMarre Carroll played well, and they were able to do just enough on defense to keep the Nets at bay. Let’s hope the Hawks can put away the Nets quickly so they will have some time to rest before the second round.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Mike Budenholzer has had himself a great week as he was awarded NBA Coach of the Year on Tuesday.

Budenholzer led the Hawks to a franchise record 60 regular season wins, and he’s the first Hawks coach in over 20 years to lead them to a No. 1 seed and division title. Congrats Mike and let’s keep it going.

GOING DRAFTING

It’s that time. The NFL Draft will take place on Thursday, and the Falcons have the No. 8 overall pick. Will they go with a pass rusher and draft Bud Dupree or Vic Beasley, or will they go outside the box and draft someone like Todd Gurley? I can’t wait for Thursday night.

GOING MINICAMPING

Before the Falcons do work in the draft, they will have a voluntary minicamp starting on Monday. The Falcons already started the offseason conditioning program earlier this month, but this will be the time where the players can work with the coaches on the field. This only means the season is right around the corner.

RELEASE THE SCHEDULE

And speaking of the regular season, the Falcons 2015 schedule was released on Tuesday, and they will open the season on Monday night and face the Philadelphia Eagles. They will also have a Thursday night game against the New Orleans Saints, and will face the Carolina Panthers in Week 14 and Week 16. It’s a very interesting schedule to say the least.

The Fins were picked by some to make the World Series – not a great pick thus far. The Marlins have looked terrible and have sunk to 3-11. Their pitching has been atrocious and is a key factor why they have lost fivestraight games. The season is early, but it looks like the Marlins have already been hooked.

A 45-37 season without Kevin Durant and a playoff appearance was enough to get the sevenyear coach fired. It was the first time since his first season with the Thunder that OKC was unable to make the playoffs. The window for winning a championship may be closing sooner than expected with the Durant injury, so the front office decided to shake things up.

77 “F-bombs” probably isn’t the best way to make friends with the media. The Cincinnati Reds manager went AWOL when asked why allstar catcher Devin Mesoraco was unavailable to pinchhit. Price’s tirade will likely live on as one of the foulest in baseball history. It’s not a good sign if your manager is unraveling less than a month into the season.

he Lassiter girls clinched the Region 5-AAAAAA title by defeating Walton 1-0 last Saturday. Margot Richardson notched a first-half goal for the Trojans, who extended their winning streak to 10 while recording their fifth consecutive shutout. In the boys’ match, Lassiter edged Walton 2-1 in overtime. The Trojans led 1-0 at halftime after Jumar Oakley put the ball in the back of the net off an assist

Overtime had to separate the two teams and it was once again Oakley who delivered the goods. He scored his second goal of the game fewer than three minutes into the extra frame, with Evan Hill providing the assist. Josh Stoll made four saves for the Trojans.

Wesleyan beat Lovett in both the boys and girls matches on Tuesday. The Wesleyan boys

secured the No. 3 seed out of Region 6-AA by prevailing 2-0. Nick Everbusch put Wesleyan ahead in the first half before Benji Johnson scored an insurance goal in the second, with Abraham Lopez assisting on both occasions.

Austin Pack stopped eight shots for Wesleyan.

The Lady Wolves edged Lovett 1-0 on a goal by Abbey Mitchell with fewer than eight minutes remaining in regulation. T.J. Anderson had the assist and Carolina Cannon made 11 saves in front of the net. Like the boys, Wesleyan’s girls will also be the third seed in the state tournament from Region 6-AA. Parkview also swept a clash of rivals on Tuesday. Region 8-AAAAAA action saw the Panthers beat the Brookwood boys 2-1 on goals

Fellowship Christian’s girls wrapped up the Area 6-A championship last week with a 10-0 blowout of Mount Pisgah. The Paladins, who reached the state semifinals last season, also got the best of Stratford Academy last week before blanking Mount Pisgah Christian again on Tuesday via an 8-0 scoreline. Head coach Tim Rice’s squad has been led offensively by Rachel Haigwood and Megan Hudgens. A stellar defense features three-year starter Sara Kate Jones and goalkeeper Shannon Milhollin.

Fellowship Christian will wrap up its regularseason slate against Blessed Trinity on Thursday before heading to the state tournament in early May. PLAYOFF PUSH…

It was a rain soaked week, but there still was some movement in the baseball polls. No. 6 Lakeside-DeKalb (20-3, 11-1) swept a three game series with Rockdale County (9-12, 6-6).

The Vikings outscored the Bulldogs 24-4 highlighted by a 15-0 series ending victory in which Lakeside-DeKalb allowed just one hit. Also in 6A, No. 10 Mountain View (17-6, 9-2) makes its debut in the polls after East Coweta (14-6, 10-1) dropped out. The Bears have won sixstraight games and are tied with North Gwinnett (16-7, 9-2) atop the Region 7-AAAAAA standings.

ries saw No. 2 Union Grove (17-2, 15-1) split with No. 6 Ola (19-4, 8-3). Ola rallied to win game one 3-1, scoring three runs in the final two frames. Matthew Mammatas and Tyler Sullivan both drove in runs. Union Grove’s offense was led by two hits from Jake Kaufman.

The Wolverines would take care of business two days later and win 6-1, to clinch a subregion championship. No. 3 Gainesville (17-5, 12-3), who swapped places with Union Grove in the rankings, received six shutout innings from Mikey Gonzalez in his first varsity start to defeat Flowery Branch (12-8, 7-7) 3-0.

Blessed Trinity (20-2, 13-0) and Pierce County (23-1, 18-0) both have a stranglehold on the top two spots in 3A. No. 8 Decatur (176, 10-3) had a chance to make a statement in Region 4-AAA on Tuesday against Blessed Trinity, but the Bulldogs could not hold onto an early lead. Decatur held a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth inning, but could not stop the bleeding as the Titans scored in each of the next four innings to pull away for a 6-3 win.

Benedictine (17-5, 11-0) saw its 11-game win streak come to an end last Monday with a non-region loss to South Effingham (18-5, 11-3) by a final of 9-5. The Cadets rebounded with a 3-1 win over Jeff Davis (14-7, 8-3.

FORTE TRANSFER’S AND GEORGIA BASEBALL PICKS UP ROAD WIN

G

eorgia forward Cameron Forte has decided to transfer out of the program after he graduates this summer, following two years playing in the program. The 6-7, 220 pound front court man averaged 3.7 points and 2.4 rebounds during his career in Athens.

Since he is graduating, this means that the Arizona native will be able to play without having to sit out a year at his next school on the division one level. Forte says that it was his wish to be closer to home.

“I’m extremely grateful to the University of Georgia and Coach Mark Fox for giving me the opportunity to study and represent this institution on the basketball court,” Forte said in a statement posted on his Twitter account.

“At the end of this semester, I will graduate and I think it’s in my best interest to play my last year of collegiate basketball at an institution closer to home.”

PANTHERS RALLY THEIR WAY TO SWEEP

ven the weather couldn’t slow down Georgia State this weekend as the first-place Panthers (24-15, 13-3) took two games on the road from Appalachian State (11-28, 4-16) before having Sunday’s series finale rained out. Georgia State is now 7-0 in Sun Belt road games after the two-game sweep, but it wasn’t easy. On Friday, the Panthers used a Justin Jones 12thinning single to sneak past the Mountaineers 4-3. Nathan Bates started the marathon going 7.2 innings without a run before App State tacked on two to tie the game up. Closer Kevin Burgee came up big as he pitched a career-long four innings to nurse the game in extra innings before Jerry Stuckey came in for the final out to clinch his second save of the season.

On Saturday there was more late inning magic with the Panthers rallying from down 12-6 heading into the eighth inning to eventually win 15-13. GSU scored six in the eighth and three runs in the ninth. Matt Rose hit his Sun Beltleading 12th homer of the season, a two-run

year’s Georgia men’s basketball program that broke the five year draught of missing the NCAA Tournament. They would go on to lose in the second round to Michigan State.

Mark Fox had nothing but pleasant things to say about Forte in a statement released by the university.

“Cam has been a key part of our team,” Fox said. “He is on track to graduate this summer and that was a goal we both shared for him.”

Even with Forte transferring out, Georgia is still expected to return 10 players from this year’s team in 2015-16.

BASEBALL GETS NICE WIN AT CLEMSON ...

Through a 7-0 shutout Tuesday night at Foley Field, Georgia baseball was able to bounce back from their two-game sweep at the hands of LSU in Athens. With the win, Georgia moves to 21-20 on the season.

The Bulldogs used four pitchers to keep the Tigers bats to only two hits in the win. Jared Walsh was able to get the win, going two innings scoreless.

Designated hitter Daniel Nichols and first baseman Zack Bowers would both combine for four of the Bulldogs seven runs en route to the win. They both batted in a pair of runs.

Georgia hits the road this weekend for a three game series with the Auburn Tigers. That series gets underway on Thursday night.

The season ended for the women’s tennis team on Sunday in the Sun Belt tournament semifinals. The Panthers fell 4-3 to UT Arlington after rallying to force doubles play. Georgia State battled back Saturday after losing the first three singles matches. Linn Timmermann, Chaimaa Roudami and Veronika Golanova each won their flights to tie things up at 3-3. “Today was a really tough loss for us. I give a lot of credit to UTA. They bring a ton of energy to the match and made it very exciting. It could have gone either way,” head coach Jason Marshall said.

DROPPING THE HAMMER ...

LaPorscha Wells set a school record on her way to finishing first in the hammer event at the Georgia Tech Invitational. The sophomore threw the hammer 59.31m (194-7) to top her previous school record of 56.96m (186-10) set in March at the USF Invite. Stella Christoforou and Alysiah Whittaker both excelled as well, finishing third and second in their respective events.

STANFORD FULLBACK JOINS TECH BACKFIELD

S

tanford fullback Patrick Skov plans to finish his playing career at Georgia Tech and that is a good sign for the Yellow Jackets.

Skov will graduate from Stanford in June with a degree in Internatinoal Relations. He has already been accepted to the school’s MBA program and it is expected he will be eligible to play for Georgia Tech in 2015. Quarterback Justin Thomas returned but the team was thin at A-back and B-back and Skov will come in and immediately take snaps at B-back.

“This was not an easy decision,” Skov wrote in an open letter posted to his Twitter account. “I have nothing but the fondest memories and greatest appreciation for all my experiences at Stanford, both academically and with the football program. I have the utmost respect for Coach Shaw, my coaches, teammates, professors and classmates. I will cherish forever everything they have given me.”

Skov played in 39 games at Stanford but is ready to move on to life in Atlanta.

BASEBALL DEFEATS UGA AND TECH, ACHESON PROMOTED TO HEAD SOFTBALL COACH

very year, the baseball team plays the major schools in Georgia, which includes Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech and Georgia. This past week, the Owls got a chance to play the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets, and sandwiched that in with two conference games against Florida Gulf Coast, it was a very exciting week for the defending Atlantic Sun Champions.

The Owls took on the Bulldogs last Wednesday and came away with a 2-1 win.

Pitcher A.J. Moore was able to allow only one run through seven innings of work. Grant Williams was the offensive hero for the Owls as he drove in a run in the first inning and scored a run in the fifth.

On Tuesday, the Owls traveled to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech. And thanks to an offensive explosion in the sixth inning, the Owls took care of the Yellow Jackets 11-6.

The Yellow Jackets (24-16) welcomed I-75 rival Kennesaw State (22-18) to Russ Chandler Stadium on Tuesday and fell 11-6. It was the second meeting between the two schools this year with each school picking up a win. Tech edged Kennesaw on March 17, 7-6 at Stillwell Baseball Stadium.

Georgia Tech took an early lead on an A.J. Murray two-run homer in the first inning and held a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth inning. The ramblin’ wreck’s wheels went off the tracks in the disastrous game-deciding inning; Georgia Tech committed four errors and allowed seven runs to score. Tech eventually responded with three runs in the eighth coming off of a Matt Gonzalez RBI single and A.J. Murray’s second two-run bomb of the game, but three runs in the top of the ninth from Kennesaw State put the game out of reach.

ACHESON PROMOTED …

Troy Acheson, who has been serving as the interim head coach for the softball team this season, is now officially the head coach.

The announcement was made on Tuesday.

Acheson is now the fifth head coach in the program’s history, and he has been on fire this season, leading the Owls to a 31-14 record as of Wednesday. One of the key wins this season was when the Owls defeated Kentucky who was ranked in the Top 10.

Success is nothing new to Acheson because he was doing the same thing at Tennessee Tech for 14 seasons. During his time at Tennessee Tech, Acheson won at least 25 games or more in 13 of the 14 seasons, and he averaged 36 wins per year. He led the Golden Eagles to four Ohio Valley Conference regular season titles, five tournament championships and four NCAA Regional appearances.

HAWKS CUT DOWN NETS; BUD COACH OF THE YEAR

out, but were never able to put the game out of reach completely. The Nets hung around by pounding Atlanta inside. They outrebounded the Hawks 47-to-39 overall, and doubled them up on the offensive glass with 12 rebounds.

Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young both produced double-doubles. Lopez tied with a teamhigh with 17 points and 14 rebounds while Young added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hawks extended their lead to 84-70 with 8:52 remaining before the Nets went on an 11-2 run spanning over four minutes to cut the lead to 86-81. A Thaddeus Young jumper with 1:32 left would be as close as the Nets would get at 93-89. Jeff Teague would sink the final six points of the game for Atlanta; four of which came from the foul line.

GOMES POWERS BRAVES TO SERIES WIN AT TORONTO

he Atlanta Braves lost the opener of this week’s three-game series against the New York Mets on Tuesday, but not before taking two of three from the host Toronto Blue Jays last weekend. Veteran left fielder Jonny Gomes had a hand in both victories. The 34-year-old hit his second home run of the year during an 8-7 Braves’ victory in game one. On Sunday, Gomes hit a three-run double in the first inning and added a sacrifice fly in the third as Atlanta took the rubber match 5-2.

Newly-acquired starter Shelby Miller turned in a third straight stellar outing on Sunday. He picked up the win after surrendering two runs in six innings and striking out six. Miller is 2-0 with 1.69 ERA through three starts.

BULLPEN GAINS AND LOSSES …

News from the bullpen has been mixed of late. On the field, manager Fredi Gonzalez could not ask for anything more from his re-

Paul Millsap finished with just six points on 2-11 shooting after missing five games with a shoulder injury. He has scored 11 total points in his two games back. Al Horford dislocated his pinky finger early in the fourth and returned with it heavily taped. His X-rays came back negative.

COACH OF THE YEAR ...

On Tuesday it was announced Mike Budenholzer won Coach of the Year. Coach Bud won a Hawks record 60 games this season and is the first Atlanta coach since Lenny Wilkens in ‘93-94 to win the award.

Lefthander Andrew McKirahan informed the team on Sunday that he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug and would be suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball. The sentence officially came down on Monday for McKirahan, who is a 25-year-old rookie. His positive test was performed in March, when McKirahan was in spring training as a Miami Marlin before being waived and picked up by the Braves on April 2.

Atlanta, of course, still has Jason Grilli and Luis Avilan—just to name a few—at its disposal. Grilli is tied for the major-league lead in saves as of Wednesday afternoon with six. The 38-year-old is perfect in six appearances with 10 strikeouts in six innings to go along with a 1.50 ERA. Avilan has not given up a single run in 6.1 innings of work. The southpaw has allowed only one hit and one walk and he has three holds to his credit.

“Always turn the page,” Grilli said of the mentality pitchers must have after any poor outing. “Yesterday’s gone. I’m just glad [the other relievers]…they’re not scared. They’re relishing the challenge and taking the ball when it’s given to them. We’re talking about baseball down there (in the bullpen). We’re in every pitch. And they’re learning quick. We’re off to a great start. It’s coming together real nice right now.”

FALCONS 2015 SCHEDULE RELEASED

he Falcons 2015 schedule was released Tuesday night. Atlanta will have the easiest schedule in the NFL next season with an opponent win percentage of .410. The Dan Quinn era will begin Week 1 at home as the Falcons host the Philadelphia Eagles September 14 on Monday Night Football at 7 PM. This will be the first game of ESPN’s Monday Night Football doubleheader, preceding the 49ers vs. Vikings. The last time the Falcons opened season at home on Monday Night Football was in 2005 when they defeated the Eagles, 14-10.

The season opening matchup marks the first time the Falcons have hosted the Eagles since 2011, when Atlanta posted a 35-31 victory in its home opener.

Following the Monday Night opener, Atlanta will continue its NFC East gauntlet with a trip to face the Giants in their home opener before a Week 3 visit to Jerry World to take on the Cowboys. Week 4 is at home against Houston and Week 5 will be in the Dome against the

WANG ROCKED AS BRAVES SINK TO LAST

eteran Chien-Ming Wang (0-1) lasted seven innings but was roughed up for 12 hits and six runs on Saturday as the Gwinnett Braves (3-7) dropped to the Charlotte Knights 6-2. The loss is Gwinnett’s fifth straight and plummets it to last place in the International League South division. The Braves fell behind 2-0 in the first inning after Matt Davidson belted his second homer of the year for the Knights (7-3). Gwinnett would get a run back in the top of the third when Joe Benson doubled and was knocked in by Matt Kennelly. Charlotte would quickly answer back in the bottom of the fourth scoring on a 6-4-3 double play.

The Knights would blow the game open in the seventh inning as they would score three times with two outs. Tyler Saladino drew a walk and set up a first and second situation for Carlos Sanchez who doubled and drove in one run.

Neftali Soto would single to center field to score two more runs but was thrown out at second base trying to stretch his hit into a double.

Redskins. Week 6 is the first divisional game and it will be at New Orleans. Following the Saints will be the second of four AFC South opponents with and will be at Tennessee before returning to the Dome for Week 8 against Tampa Bay.

Atlanta has a Week 9 bye and then visits the 49ers before home games against Indianapolis and Minnesota. Week 13 thru Week 15 will see three critical road games. Atlanta starts the road trip in Tampa Bay and follows it at Carolina and at Jacksonville. The final two games on the slate are at home and Atlanta will close its regular season with the Panthers and then Saints in the finale.

HIGH STAKES…

The season finale features New Orleans’ annual trip to the Dome. The last time the Saints came to Atlanta was last year’s season opener as the Falcons held on 37-34 in overtime. Matt Ryan threw three touchdowns to become the franchise’s all-time leader in touchdown passes (156), and broke the franchise record for passing yards in a single game with 448.

The Falcons will face a total of three playoff teams from 2014, including two games against NFC South winner Carolina (Week 14 & Week 16). The other playoff opponents include a home contest against Indianapolis (Week 11) and a matchup with Dallas at AT&T Stadium (Week 3).

Sanchez finished 3-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Engel Beltre and Kevan Smith both picked up two hits for the Knights while Erik Johnson advanced to 2-0 after pitching five innings allowing one run. Seven Braves picked up a hit in the loss. The Braves visit the Norfolk Tide (7-4) for a four-game series starting on Monday. Mike Foltynewicz (0-1, 2.08) is scheduled to face Mike Wright (1-0, 2.79) in game one.

FAST START ...

Through eight games, Adonis Garcia has provided the most offense. The 30-year-old has hit .355 with one homer and six RBIs. On the bump, Williams Perez has fit into the Triple-A rotation smoothly after dominating Double-A a season ago. The 23-year-old Perez has made two starts and has allowed two runs in nine innings. Perez finished 7-6 at Mississippi last with a 2.91 ERA. Top hitting prospect Jose Peraza has struggled, batting .195 through 41 at-bats. Peraza has been assured he is untouchable but other ball clubs have shown interest in the 20-yearold speedster. The Venezuelan stole 60 bases between Single-A and Double-A.

ROAD TRIP ...

The G-Braves are in the midst of a tengame road swing. Sunday’s series finale with Charlotte was postponed due to rain and has yet to be rescheduled. Gwinnett faces Norfolk and Durham before returning home on April 27 to host Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
