Homage From Front Cover exciting and authentic interpretation of the BMW M1 and the mid-engine concept from a present-day perspective, and the legacy of the BMW M1 Homage is obvious at first glance. Unquestioningly it takes up the graphic play of the hallmark BMW M1 colours black and orange and interprets them anew. The Liquid Orange paintwork exclusively developed for the BMW M1 Homage cites the classic BMW M1 colour, yet surprises with its powerfully iridescent play of colour and brilliant depth. It shapes the extrovert surface language and strikingly highlights the eloquent interplay of convex and concave surfaces.

Mention the BMW M1, and another feature that immediately springs to mind is the characteristic twin logo at the rear, on the right and left edge above the tail lights. For BMW, this particular arrangement of its emblems has always signalled a mid-engined model. In the development stage of the BMW M1 this dual emblem was the first styling element to be approved even before the initial sketches were drawn. Likewise,

it was confirmed from the outset that the BMW M1 Homage would feature the same twin badges. Other specific styling cues taken from the BMW M1 are the air vents in the bonnet and the louvres on the rear windscreen, as well as the black cutline dividing the roofline from the rear section of the body. Overall, the exterior dimensions of the BMW M1 Homage are in keeping with those of the BMW M1; only the extended wheelbase indicates a larger passenger cell.

The BMW M1 Homage takes long familiar elements from the BMW Design repertoire, reinterprets them and couches them in a new context. Its design brings together past and present, expanding the observer’s perception through new design solutions that find their expression in typical BMW style. If the contrasting colours were a dominant design theme for the BMW M1, this contrast is perpetuated in the BMW M1 Homage through its surface styling. Familiar elements, such as the trademark proportions, are combined with new and exciting lines, surfaces and details to create an up-to-date interpretation of the BMW M1, which remains to this day an extraordinary car.

of other mid-engine cars, the BMW M1 Homage consciously opts for BMW’s characteristic proportions. A relatively long engine compartment, a clearly defined transition into the A-pillar and a stretched window line featuring the “Hofmeister” kink instantly give it away as a bona fide BMW. The horizontal flow of lines lowers the car’s visual centre of gravity and lends it an air of sovereignty.

Though the BMW M1 already boasted extremely har-

monious and sporty proportions, its surface design was not yet an explicit styling issue and was dominated by high-contrast graphic themes. Today, however, next to the car’s proportions, it is primarily the unusual surface styling that determines the strong recognition value of a BMW model. For some years now, all BMW vehicles have exhibited a striking and unique design language.

The sculpting of the surfaces demands substantial experience and craftsmanship at the highest level. Only through the combination of craft skills, state-ofthe-art technology and a sure sense of the personality of each BMW can designers and modellers achieve the overall sculptural effect that lends a BMW its unique character. The BMW M1 Homage systematically melds the proportions and graphic themes of the BMW M1 with the surface language of the new BMW look – a combination that imbues the vehicle with an exciting, sporty and authentic emotionality.

As Economy Worsens Car Owners Choose to Repair Rather than Replace Cars A broad and growing coalition representing more than 1,500 independent automotive repair shops and related industries says it will push for passage of the Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act that would guarantee equal access to automotive repair information for independent repairers and their customers.

as more consumers choose to repair - rather than replace - their cars amid an economy and an automobile industry in freefall.

The expected increase in demand for repair service will likely highlight a longstanding practice by car manufactures to restrict access to some, or all, of the repair codes being sought by independent repairers. The legislation puts independent repairers on equal footing with dealer repair shops for access to

repair information.

The Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition includes the New England Service Station Automotive Repair Association, the Massachusetts Auto Body Association, the Massachusetts Independent Automobile Dealers Association and the New England Tire & Service Association. Also supporting the Right to Repair movement in Massachusetts is the National Federation of Independent Business, the Massachusetts Retailers Association, the Consumer Electronics Association, the Coalition for Auto Repair Equality and the Automotive Af termarket Industr y Association.

“Consumers want the right to decide where to have their cars serviced,” said Ernie Corrigan, spokesman for the Coalition. There are more than five million cars registered in Massachusetts that need easily accessible and affordable service. “If car manufacturers can dictate where you have your car repaired then you have lost your right to choose.

After all, who owns your car?”

Corrigan said.

The independent repair industry has voluntarily inserted legislative language that excludes car manufacturers’ trade secrets from being conveyed to repairers as part of the information stream.

After winning support from two key legislative committees this year, the Right to Repair bill remains alive until the end of the year at which point it will be re-filed in January.

There are more than 5,000 independent repair shops and related automotive businesses in Massachusetts that generate more than $6 billion in economic activity in the state. The industry is responsible for nearly one in ten jobs in the Massachusetts economy.n

Mercedes-Benz CL Coupe Adds 4MATIC All-Wheel Drive The CL550, the premium-luxury coupe from Mercedes-Benz, is getting standardequipment 4MATIC all-wheel drive for 2009. As modern all-wheel-drive systems become even more refined, they are becoming increasingly popular, especially in the luxury car market.

With negligible gas mileage tradeoffs, full-time AWD systems provide yearround traction and stability benefits on both wet and dry roads.

Identified by new 18-inch wheels with a distinctive seven -splitspoke design, the 2009model CL550 4MATIC also comes with new standard equipment that includes heated and active ventilated front seats and the Keyless-Go system.

CL550 From Previous Page Even Better Traction with Multi-Plate Diff Clutch Like the S-Class sedan, the CL550 4MATIC coupe comes with a multi-plate clutch tucked into the center differential that provides the extra traction benefits of a limited-slip diff while complementing its four-wheel traction control.

Often called a “breakaway” clutch, the multi-plate unit helps provide power equally to the front and rear wheels when driving straight ahead, but still allows the front wheels to rotate faster in turns. While four-wheel traction control reacts after wheel slippage is sensed, the clutch helps prevent slippage.

PRE-SAFE® Brake Can Automatically Apply Partial Emergency Braking The launch of the current CL coupe marked the debut of another revolutionary Mercedes-Benz safety feature – PRE-SAFE® brake. senses an impending rollover, the sunroof closes as well. Distronic Plus Helps in Stop-and-Go Traffic In the latest CL coupe line, the well-known Distronic cruise control feature that maintains a pre-set following distance behind the vehicle ahead is replaced by an optional “Distronic Plus” system. Integrated with the latest PRE-SAFE, the latest radar-based system operates at nearly all speeds up to 125 mph and can be especially helpful in stop-and-go traffic. Short-range 24-gigahertz radar sweeps the first 33 yards in a fan-shaped 80-degree pattern, working in tandem with a narrower nine-degree beam of longer-range radar.

The two radar frequencies complement each other to cover a full range of more than 160 yards – more than 1½ football fields. During approval of the new radar frequency, government agencies cited its potential to improve traffic safety, reduce injuries and ultimately save lives.

Brake Assist Now Teams Up With Distronic Plus On the latest CL coupe, an enhanced version of the Mercedes-Benz Brake Assist system not only supplies braking assist in emergencies as soon as the driver applies the brake pedal, but also measures the distance to the vehicle ahead (thanks to Distronic Plus) and adjusts brake pressure if the driver doesn’t brake hard enough. While Brake Assist is only triggered by the driver’s reaction on the brake pedal, Brake Assist Plus also considers the closing speed of the vehicle ahead based on radar signals from the Distronic Plus system.

Infra-Red Night View Assist Another innovative technology on the CL coupe is optional Night View Assist, which can extend the driver’s ability to see ahead to nearly 500 feet.

In contrast to passive systems that rely on thermal imaging, this active system bathes the road ahead with invisible infra-red light from two projector beams mounted in the headlights. An infra-red camera discreetly mounted in the windshield receives the reflected images and displays them in a high-resolution display in the instrument cluster. The result is akin to a highly detailed black & white video image.n

Identity Theft Task Force Reports Strategic Plan Improvements, But Issue Persists The Identity Theft Task Force, established in 2006 by President George W. Bush to combat identity theft more effectively, has reviewed the progress made on its strategic plan to the president that was submitted in 2007.

The strategic plan examined the characteristics and range of identity theft and included 31 recommendations in four key areas: data protection, avoiding data misuse, victim assistance and deterrence.

The report concludes that task force members have implemented many

of the 31 recommendations, yet many are ongoing. Because identity theft continues to evolve and expand as a crime, solutions and potential victims need to maintain adaptability. Further, once the 31 recommendations on the strategic plan have been successfully completed, the fight will not be over; perpetrators continue to be more creative and aggressive.

The report states, “It is a challenge in which the security risks and responsibilities spread from consumers, to enterprises, to information technology and

telecommunication vendors, software providers, and others who facilitate the collection use, maintenance, and eventual destruction of personal information.”

The Automotive Service Association has encouraged members to be aware of important policy initiatives related to identity theft. Small businesses and their customers have much at risk as the task force has highlighted. ASA will continue to report on specific initiatives to help ensure its members and their customers are protected from identity theft.n

The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) has assembled a lineup of leading political figures and inspirational speakers—including former U.S. presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton—to deliver remarks at its 92nd annual Convention & Exposition in New Orleans next month.

Earlier this year, the NADA Charitable Foundation made a $400,000 contribution to the Brees Dream Foundation— founded by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and wife, Brittany—to help rebuild the athletic fields at the Lusher Charter School, the largest public high school in New Orleans.

Ford Motor Co. President and CEO Alan Mulally will deliver the keynote

address during the General Assembly on Saturday, Jan. 24, following NADA Chairman Annette Sykora. Archie Manning, former Saints’ quarterback and National Football League Most Valuable Player, and Christopher Gardner, the inspiration for the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness,” will offer motivational talks. On Sunday, Jan. 25, incoming NADA Chairman John P. McEleney will outline his priorities for the coming year, the chief among which is to expand the availability of credit for vehicle purchases.n

Vehicle Service Key to Dealership Survival in Downturn, Says Urban Science According to retail consulting firm Urban Science, automotive dealerships should take advantage of every vehicle service opportunity to help assure their survival during the continuing economic downturn. Service and parts departments have long been profit generators for dealerships. With the recent decline of new car sales and leasing, however, they are now becoming an imperative tool to securing their futures.

“Dealerships are closing in record numbers, and automakers are doing what they can to ensure dealers get the support they need to not only survive but thrive in the current business climate,” said Randy Berlin, global practice

director at Urban Science. “They can do this by ensuring dealers have the right information to take advantage of market conditions.”

Better targeting potential customers with service offers is one way to improve revenue, said Berlin. Customer and vehicle data provided by automakers can help determine the best way to reach potential service customers.

Knowing where a dealer’s customers are going for service -- and whether they are going to another same-brand dealer -can help dealerships understand where service efforts and marketing may be lacking. Insight into customer perceptions can also be found by looking at a

dealer’s relative ranking, based on key dynamics, in a given market.

“With consumers now holding onto their vehicles an average of four months longer than last year, the average age of vehicles has hit 71 months-a big opportunity for increasing customer-pay service work,” said Berlin. “The conditions are right for dealers to increase revenue from service to cover fixed expenses.”

Tools are available for automakers to provide dealers with a database of customer contact information that includes vehicle information and last service visit.

Dealerships can then use this to create customized and relevant marketing efforts that can increase profitability.n

Lexus And Scholastic Announce Winners Of The Lexus Eco Challenge #1 Teens nationwide learned the importance of recycling, composting, saving endangered plant and animal species, and cleaning up parks and forests as they took part in the Lexus Eco Challenge, an educational program and contest that inspires and empowers middle and high school students to learn about the environment and take a stand to improve it.

Fifteen teams in 12 states were awarded $10,000 each for their outstanding entries in the "Protecting the

Land" Challenge, the first of three initial challenges. This win has also secured each team an invitation to participate in the Final Challenge for a chance at $50,000. In all, $1 million in scholarships and grants will be awarded throughout the year.

Third generation oceanographer/environmentalist and Lexus Eco Challenge spokesperson Fabien Cousteau said he was impressed with the array of the winning entries. "I spend so much time working to open peoples'

eyes to the environmental challenges we face today," he said. "Seeing these young people learn so early how important it is that we each do our part is inspiring.

When I see this kind of dedication and commitment, I'm encouraged because the next generation is stepping up to be better stewards of the planet than we have been."

For each of the challenges, teams are required to define an environmental issue that is important to them, develop an action plan to address the issue, implement the plan, and report on the results. The Challenge #1 winning teams that best addressed "Protecting the Land" were: High School Teams: California (Roseville): "The Croc Hunter Crew" - Woodcreek H.S. - Worked to preserve local wetlands by educating the community through a Web site, video, wetland tours.

Participated in "Creek Week" and an invasive species removal event.

Florida (Plantation):"Team EcoGeeks" - South Plantation H.S. - Started an all-new recycling program at their school and worked to collect plastic bottles, glass bottles and aluminum cans. Volunteered at a 5K run/walk event where the team collected recyclables and distributed information about the benefits of recycling.

Georgia (Atlanta) : "The Westminster CCC" - The Westminster Schools - Focused on reducing waste by composting, reusing and recycling.

Initiatives included planning a campus vegetable garden, composting cafeteria leftovers, switching to milk and condiment dispensers rather than disposable cartons and packets, and eliminating paper cafeteria trays.

Recycling increased 20 percent.

Arrest Made in Auto Accident Fraud Ring Investigation Insurance Commissioner Jim Long announced the arrest of another Eastern North Carolina resident for her role in what Department of Insurance investigators have identified as an auto insurance fraud ring spanning four years and worth more than $100,000 in phony insurance payments from staged accidents.

The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office arrested Yolanda Michelle Harper, 24, 2600 Rebecca Ln., Kinston and charged her with three counts of conspiracy to obtain property by false pretenses. She was processed at the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office and placed under a $50,000 secured bond. On Dec. 1, Department investigators presented their investigation to the Lenoir County Grand Jury, who retuned indictments against Harper.

Superior Court Judge Paul Jones issued an order for her arrest.

Harper is the fifth suspect arrested in what Department investigators' allegations identify as an auto accident fraud ring involving staged auto accidents and phony insurance claims worth more than $100,000.

Additional arrests and charges are expected as the investigation continues. GMAC Insurance Company tipped off Department investigators to the fraud ring.n

Congress Discusses ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Program With Congress returning to Capitol Hill to consider economic stimulus legislation for the automotive industry - and returning after the holidays to discuss a broader stimulus package - the concept of a fleet modernization program is receiving more attention from policymakers.

Princeton University’s Dr. Alan Blinder, in a New York Times article published earlier in 2008, referred to this policy option as “Cash for Clunkers” - government payments to remove older, less-fuel-efficient or high-polluting vehicles from America’s highways.

And yet the front of the BMW M1 Homage is an absolute novelty for BMW. Each element assumes a function: the hallmark twin kidney, for example, is not only a distinguishing feature of the BMW brand but combines aerodynamic, cooling-air routing and safety solutions. The design of the headlamps, meanwhile, is a new iteration of the retractable headlights of the BMW M1. Like the lamps on the historic model, those on the BMW M1 Homage are only visible when switched on. When not in use they are discreetly integrated into the front-end design

and “disappear” into the recessed black cutline, almost like pop-up headlights.

Along the side of the car all the lines, surfaces and details lead the eye from the front end along the stretched engine compartment and clearly defined A-pillars before converging at the centre of the vehicle. Two expressive lines are drawn from the front along the flanks of the vehicle towards the engine compartment area. The flow of lines begins in a straight, disciplined fashion at the front end, lowering the optical centre of gravity of the BMW M1 Homage and highlighting its low-slung stance. From the middle of the car, however, the lines break up. The power of the design is focused precisely where the power of the

vehicle also lies – at the engine. Strong, sensuous sweeping lines accentuate the car’s mid-engine concept, the design emphasising the mechanics behind it, the engineering skills and the engine expertise of the BMW Group.

The roofline of the BMW M1 Homage is flatly tapered, extending into and around the rear. In so doing it draws a continuous line and forms a link between the two sides of the car. It is on this line, above the tail lights, that the hallmark twin BMW logo can also be found.

The overall design is driven by functionality and each detail has its purpose. Aspects such as aerodynamics, cooling-air routing and safety lend the BMW M1 Homage technical substance January 2009

and make it a genuine BMW. A telling symbol of this is the kidney grille design of the BMW M1 Homage, fulfilling as it does several functions at the same time.

The twin kidney isn’t just a signature BMW feature, it is also part of the car’s honed aerodynamics: it guides the air to the engine cooling as well as constituting the front section of a crash box, similar to the monocoque chassis of a Formula One race car.

Inspired by aircraft design, the car as a whole also boasts sophisticated air ducting through the body. For example, the cooling-air routing for the engine is positioned below the roofline, in the black recessed cutline along the side of the vehicle behind the window graphic. Small flaps and openings guide the air stream into the engine compartment to ensure an adequate supply of cooling air.

The BMW M1 Homage holds great significance for the BMW Group Design team, its genesis epitomising both a living tradition and an innovative future.

This vehicle is designed as a source of inspiration; it sets out to challenge us to question and rethink what we see around us. The BMW M1 Homage pays eloquent tribute to the BMW Turbo and the BMW M1, which in their design were well ahead of their time. New York (Albany): "Gators Going Green" - St. Teresa of Avila School Implemented a recycling program at the school that cut waste in half. Created a Web site, distributed fliers and held a recycling day for the community.

Texas (Houston): "The Gale Force" - St. Francis Episcopal Day School Following the destruction of Hurricane Ike, the team raised awareness about the negative impact of deforestation, the benefits of trees, and the need to replant trees lost in the hurricane.

Utah (Holladay): "Green Queens" Olympus Jr. High - Cleaned up a local park including weeding, removing trash and graffiti, and cleaning the pond.

Wisconsin (Mukwonago): "St. James, Mukwonago" - St. James Parish School - Educated the community about

the importance of recycling and worked to encourage the city to install recycling bins in area parks.

"It's tremendous to see the creativity and commitment these students put into their projects," said Lexus Group Vice President Mark Templin. "It goes to show that every community has opportunities to improve its environment and these students are learning that, if they work together, they can make a difference."

The Lexus Eco Challenge, now in its second year, launched on Sept. 15, 2008, and concludes with the announcement of the first place and grand-prize-winning teams during Earth Month in April 2009. Challenge #2, "Water Works," is currently underway and has an entry deadline of Dec. 12. Challenge #3, "Air/ Climate," starts on Dec. 17 and ends on Feb. 6, 2009.

In addition to the ongoing contest, the Lexus Eco Challenge also includes educational materials designed

by Scholastic to encourage teachers to integrate creative lesson plans into their classrooms to help teach students about the environment. Federal Reserve Approves NADA-Backed Initiative Aimed at Increasing Inventory Financing Following President Bush’s announcement Friday to provide $17.4 billion in bridge loans to General Motors and Chrysler, the Federal Reserve Board, in a related action, addressed a key request from the National Automobile Dealers Association by including floor plan securitizations in a new $200 billion credit facility the Federal Reserve is establishing.

The Federal Reserve on Friday clarified the eligibility requirements under the new Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF) and, in doing so, for the first time included securities backed by dealer inventory loans as a qualifying asset class.

“This move meets a key need that

NADA had identified for greater liquidity in the auto retailing marketplace,” said Andy Koblenz, NADA vice president of legal and regulatory affairs.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced Nov. 25 that the Fed would be establishing the TALF, a $200 billion program designed to facilitate the issuance and sale of securities backed by auto loans. However, at the time the TALF was announced, it was unclear whether it would include securities backed by loans for dealers at the wholesale level. That uncertainty has now been resolved.

In addition to confirming the eligibility of securities backed by floor plan loans, the Federal Reserve also extended the term of TALF loans from one to three

years and provided that TALF loans could have fixed or floating interest rates.

These changes will make it easier for auto finance companies to use the TALF to issue floor plan securitizations.

“NADA’s goal all along was to restore liquidity in the credit markets for all dealers and their customers,” Koblenz added. “By working with the Federal Reserve and the Department of Treasury to ensure that securities backed by floor planning loans were included, NADA was able to give creditors confidence to once again make loans available to dealers to finance the inventory on their lots.

This will, in turn, help ensure that dealers have at their dealerships the selection of vehicles that consumers want to buy.”n

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has approved the regulation to amend the Remedy for Violation of Requirements to Provide Personal Protective Equipment and Train Employees regulation currently in place. Specifically, this proposal clarifies that “noncompliance with the personal protective equipment (PPE) and training requirements in safety and health standards may expose the employer to liability on a per-employee basis.”

The provisions will not require employers to provide a new type of PPE or training, or to cover employees that were not previously covered by existing requirements. The amendment’s

purpose is to spell out solutions for violations of existing requirements, and to create a standard throughout OSHA provisions so that the Agency is able to deal with an employer’s failure to provide the required training and/or PPE as individual violations.

The amendments will become effective Jan. 12, 2009.

With Reynolds’ certification in the GM “OneSource” program, dealerships using either Contact Management or Lead Management will be able to receive more comprehensive information about consumers who are requesting information and their vehicles of interest, enabling dealerships to provide more detailed and personalized responses to consumers.

We Work As A Team - That’s The Most Important Thing

by Russ Heaps Saying that the Nalley BMW building in Decatur was built around Gary Lazenby would be an exaggeration, but not by much. When he was hired in 1966, it was a Volkswagen dealership and remained exclusively so until owner Neil Christman added a BMW franchise in 1975.

This was also the year when Lazenby was promoted to the position of parts manager – a job that has never gotten old.

“I enjoy the business and I enjoy the job,” he said, “and that’s why I stay.”

Freshly discharged from the Army, Lazenby was waiting around the courthouse where he was in the process of applying for a marriage license when he ran into Jim Ellis. It was a chance encounter. He had known Ellis growing up and played on a team Ellis coached. While Lazenby was going to school and serving a tour in the army, Ellis became the general manager of Chris Volkswagen. Upon learning that Lazenby was recently discharged and looking for a job, Ellis suggested he apply for work at the dealership. Lazenby followed through, got a job in the parts department and made it into a career.

Christman sold the Volkswagen franchise in the early 1990s, and then sold the BMW dealership to Asbury Automotive Group five years ago at which time it became Nalley BMW. It is one of the 13 Nalley dealerships in the 26

When pressed on how the parts business has changed at his own dealership in the last decade or two, Lazenby stated it really hasn’t except to get bigger. “We’ve operated about the same since the beginning,” he said. “We’ve always been service oriented. Mr. Christman had a philosophy of customer service and that continued when we became Nalley BMW. Whatever it takes to make the customer happy, we do it.”

Bigger took on new meaning last year when an $8 million dealership expansion and renovation was completed. Lazenby doesn’t know how many square feet his parts department occupies – they’ve never measured it.

It grew considerably, however, with last year’s improvements. Now they keep an January 2009

average of $1 million in inventory on hand.

With a fill rate exceeding 90 percent, the 21-person parts staff is kept busy. The parts sales force includes four people on the wholesale desk, two on the retail counter and five serving Nalley’s two service shops.

Also a product of the expansion, a second 24-bay service shop was added upstairs supplementing the original 20-bay service department.

According to Lazenby, Nalley BMW distributes parts throughout the southeast. They have shipped parts as distant as Puerto Rico. The several Nalley dealerships share parts delivery drivers, so there are always trucks available. “ The Nalley dealerships have 39 local delivery trucks with eight drivers in Decatur market.” he said.

For long-distance deliveries, Lazenby uses two contract delivery services. He believes one of the practices that keeps customers coming back to buy parts at Nalley BMW is that there are no delivery or return fees. “We just don’t believe in hassling the customer,” he said. “It’s not always easy, but we don’t charge freight on deliveries and we get parts to customers overnight if they really need them.

If the parts are returned, we don’t hassle them for that either.”

Creating and maintaining that sort of service philosophy is often easier when you know and trust your team. Responsible for the hiring and training of virtually every member of his team, Lazenby has confidence and trust in their ability to get the job done. “Most of my guys have been with me for 15 or 20 years,” he said.

In a letter to policymakers, the Automotive Service Association (ASA) indicated its support for a fleet modernization program that includes the following key points: • Any fleet modernization program must include a vehicle repair option for consumers.

• The program should be administered by the states.

• Vehicle participation should be tied to emissions and improving air quality.

• Repair cost allowances should be sufficient to address emissions repairs.

Both California and Texas have state fleet modernization programs that could serve as models for other states. ASA encourages Congress and states to review the Texas and California programs to determine how best to structure such a program. If a new federal law is passed with funds for fleet modernization programs, states would be well-served to establish advisory committees made up of consumers, independent repairers and new car dealers to determine the most effective program.n

ASA Collision Division Names ASA/ASE Collision Technician of the Year Michael “Mike” Loy, owner of Mike Loy’s Collision Inc. in Lewisburg, Ohio, has been named the Automotive Service Association (ASA)/National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Collision Technician of the Year. He will receive his award during the 2008 International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) in Las Vegas. The award recognizes the ASA Collision Division member who received the highest score on the 2008 ASE master collision repair/refinish certification test.

The award was presented Nov. 7 during the Automotive Service and Repair Week (ASRW) Awards Breakfast.

ASRW is the umbrella under which CARS and NACE are being co-located at the Mandalay Bay and Convention Center.

ASRW is an industrywide event,

which includes both the collision and mechanical segments of automotive service and repair. It allows both collision and mechanical service professionals to benefit from NACE and CARS. When Loy was informed of the award, he said: “I feel honored to receive this award from ASA. It was a real surprise to receive the phone call from Bill Haas [of ASA] to find out this award came with an all-expense-paid trip to NACE. Ten days later I received another surprise. ASE called to congratulate me on winning the Snap-On/ASE Master Collision Repair and Refinish Technician of the Year Award for the United States and Canada. Wow, what an honor. These awards can be received by anyone taking ASE testing. ASE testing can make a real difference in a person’s life.”

Loy, 56, has been an ASA member 15 years and has been active in the

collision repair industry since 1972. He represents the third generation that has owned and operated a collision shop in Lewisburg. Mike Loy’s Collision is celebrating its 91st year.

Loy has been an I-CAR instructor 19 years and is the lead I-CAR instructor for Ohio. He is an I-CAR Platinum Individual. Loy has been an I-CAR instructor qualification trainer and won the Instructor of the Year award in 1996 for the South Central Region.

ASA Mechanical Division Names ASA/ASE Mechanical Technician of the Year

Mark Wagenblast, owner of Mark’s Automotive Inc. in Bend, Ore., has been named the 2008 Automotive Service Association (ASA)/National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Mechanical Technician of the Year and will receive his award during the Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) in Las Vegas. The award recognizes the ASA Mechanical Division member who received the highest score on the 2008 ASE master automobile certification test.

The award was presented Nov. 7, during the Automotive Service and Repair Week (ASRW) Awards Breakfast.

ASRW is the umbrella under which CARS and NACE are being co-located at the Mandalay Bay and Convention Center.

ASRW is an industrywide event, which includes both the collision and mechanical segments of automotive service and repair. It allows both collision and mechanical service professionals to benefit from NACE and CARS. When Wagenblast was informed of the award, he said: “I would like to thank ASA and ASE for this special recognition. This is truly an honor and the highlight of my professional career.
