Improve your golf game through better equipment choice: By Michelle Steyn - BSI Golf Coach

Improve your golf game through better equipment choice (Part 1: Shafts & Grips)

Golf is a game for all abilities, ages and gender. Those who are hungry for competition, or the ones who just want to have fun.

Although it may seem very complicated just by listening to the lingo and seeing the variety of equipment, having the wrong equipment is detrimental to your game, regardless of ability.

Starting your golf journey the correct way is important especially when it comes to the best suitable equipment for you and your game. Every player has a different swing, body movements, strengths and limitations. These factors require specific equipment for each individual to ensure the best outcome when playing the game.

Across the country you will find PGA Professionals who will assist you with not only golf lessons to improve your skills and game, but also to get properly fitted for the right equipment suitable for you!

Instead of buying the next best special on promotion or purchasing the same equipment that your friend brags about at the 19th hole, start your golf the right way and save yourself time, effort and money.

Shafts

There is a big variety of different shafts available; depending on the player’s physical abilities, it’s highly important to understand that each individual needs a shaft that is best suited for them in order to perfom better.

A shaft that is too flexible or too light will not be recommended for a player with a faster swing speed, as it is more likely to produce a ball flight that is too high and hooks too much, just as a stiffer and heavier shaft will not be recommended for a player with a slower swing speed as it will produce a ball flight that is too low and slices too much.

Grip size

The grip size on your club has a big influence on your ball flight: If the grip on your club is too thin it will result in the hands turning over too quickly, leading in a right to left ball flight; when the grip is too thick it will be more difficult to release the club through impact and most likely lead to a left to right ball flight (for right-handed players).
