INDUSTRIAL BACKWATERS

All three ďŹ sh species will typically spend the majority of their adult lives here, in Lake Erie.

Pollution and dredging have destroyed most of the breeding habitat needed by fish in the Cuyahoga River. Within the highly urban context of Cleveland, natural habitat cannot be fully restored-but it can be imitated.

A period of edge condition and fish life cycle research led to the selection of three fish for habitat design-the Walleye, the Bowfin, and the Rainbow Trout. The industrial heritage of the Cuyahoga River heavily influenced the design, which includes a water filtration system, ramp that allows fish to swim above the river level, and large breeding pool with habitat for eggs, larvae, and fry. This adaptable design can be implemented at a variety of sites and scales along the river.

Taking an axonometric view of a tidal flat allowed for a greater understanding of water’s edge condition in general. This example of habitat created by fluctuating water levels provides insight into the habitats where fish may have spawned before the industrialization of the Cuyahoga River.

Examining the life cycle of the Grass Pickerel served as a basis for understanding the needs of a fish through different stages in its life. Although this fish was not selected as a part of the design, it did offer some lessons about the factors that trigger a breeding season and determine whether a fish will reach maturity or not.

The first step in developing breeding habitat for the Walleye, Bowfin, and Rainbow Trout along the Cuyahoga was to determine when they and their offspring would be most active in the breeding grounds.

Design

Archimedes screws bring water from the Cuyahoga River to a carbon filter, which uses compartments of sand, gravel, and activated charcoal to remove chlorine, sediment, and volatile organic compounds. Next, the water flows into a marsh and floating/rhizomatic marsh that both filter out organic and metal compounds. After that, a swamp removes organic compounds and shades water to cool it. The water finally flows into the breeding habitat and then out the fish ramp into the Cuyahoga River. Fish swim up the fish ramp, which imitates a tributary, and into a shallow backwater habitat.

UTILITY The fish ramp simulates the flow of a tributary and allows fish to swim to the level of the spawning habitat.

WATER FLOW Water is brought into the filtra�on system by giant archimedes screws. Varying water levels and water flow in the spawning area allows for a mixture of flowing and stagnant habitats.

AN URBAN HYBRID This project occurred in two stages: first, the creation of a new hybrid ecology from two existing Midwestern ecologies, and second, the implementation of that hybrid in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The Great Plains Freshwater Emergent Marshes of the Dakotas and the Eastern Moist Alkaline Cliffs of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana exist entirely separately, yet share some characteristics. Combining them in the first stage involved the manipulation of topography and subsurface materials in order to saturate the ground with water, construction of a hollow cliff in a way that shielded harsh sunlight and retained moisture, and installation of a solar chimney to cool and moisten the hollow cliff structure. The second stage included the introduction of a new ecology, the sandhill prairie, as well as human program, such as a beach, pool, and climbing wall.

Site Context (Below)

The constructed cliff is hollow and holds solar chimneys, which circulate air and moisture through the structure. A clay lens keeps water in the soil for the marsh vegetation. Intense colors are an important characteristic of this hybrid ecology, from the sugar maples to the cliff itself, so the model was built to showcase those colors and textures.

The top and inside of the constructed cliff are both accessible by a pool that is filtered by the marsh vegetation and grades into a beach area. A boardwalk traverses parts of the marsh and the sandhill prairie that fills the edges of the site, while an existing crumbling wall makes a cliff-like barrier which is screened by a grove of sugar maples. A windmill in the corner powers a water aeration system in the pool.

Uneven, climbable wood panels form one wall of the cliff, which is also high enough for swimmers to go under and find themselves inside. The solar chimney still functions in the same way that it did in the original hybrid, but also becomes an interesting feature for visitors investigate from above and below.

The site is located in downtown Columbus, Ohio, between a railroad, highway, high income building complex, and the Scioto River. The intensely urban and yet decaying character of the site captured my imagination and presented a unique opportunity to introduce ecology in the city.

AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK GARDEN Change and disturbance characterize the Kimberley Region of Northern Australia. Ruderal or disturbance-adapted vegetation and transient animal species inhabit areas that flood for some parts of the year and burn for others. Designing a garden in section for this region involved careful research of the plants, animals, and soils of its landscape typologies.

The final design is a gradient from highland to lowland ecologies that accommodates seasonal change and pulls human visitors up above the ground level, allowing the garden to continue underneath.

Identifying the key species and conditions of different ecologies in the Kimberley Region and their sectional relationships to each other served as a starting point for the design.

Understanding the transfer of energy between organisms is important in understanding the ecosystem as a whole. This phase of research affected the overall design, as the garden needed to support predators, prey, and plants effectively in relation to each other. If it did not, the absence or over-abundance of an organism could destroy the ecosystem.

The design began as a construction section with stairs, a concrete promenade, and a bioswale. Research of the plants, animals, and geological conditions of Northern Australia led me to abstract the stairs into a rock outcrop, the promenade into a savanna, and the bioswale into a floodplain. Human circulation moved to an elevated boardwalk.

Resident animal species inhabit the site consistently. They may be an animal that creates a borrow or home and spends its life around it, such as the Spinifex Termite (Nasutitermes triodiae,) a slow-moving animal with a specific food source, such as the Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus,) or a roaming animal with a small range, such as the Sand Goanna (Varanus gouldii.)

Transient animal species move in and out of the site. They may be an opportunistic animal that moves into the site in response to weather and water conditions, such as the Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus,) a migrating animal that stops in the site to breed or escape hostile weather conditions, such as the Common Crow Butterfly (Euploea core,) or a roaming animal with a range larger than the boundaries of the site, such as the Dingo (Canis lupus dingo.)

In Canal Winchester, Ohio, the community is very fragmented. Although residential and commercial areas exist in close proximity to each other, car is the only way to travel between the two. At the same time, a creek running through the area collects all of the storm water from these developments. The design is a product of two systems: a wetland system that collects stormwater and informs the shape of the two lower paths, and a woodland system that shields views and informs the shape of the higher path. The project also includes deck terraces for public gathering space and a children’s garden.

EXISTING DRAINAGE I wasAREA drawn to this site both due to the fragmented surrounding community and the stream running

through it. I saw the stream as an opportunity to connect the community. Analysis began with the overlaying of topography, floodplain information, existing conditions, and points of access to determine points of interest or high activity that could be leveraged in the design.

Design Sketches and Precedent Studies (Below)

Attempting to effectively leverage the subtleties of this site took a long time. Several designs were drafted,

compared to existing park, stormwater, or waterfront projects, and restarted. The main precedent projects

for this project are the Gowanus Canal Sponge Park in Brooklyn and Berlin Strandbar-Mitte in Berlin, with

lesser influence from the Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project in Seoul and Millennium Park in Chicago.

SELECTED PARK DISTRICT PROJECTS As an intern at the Rockford Park District in Rockford, Illinois, I developed several planting plans for various parks and city properties. Usually, I was required to use native perennials, and in some cases was given a list of plants already owned by the Park District’s horticulture department to work with. Each planting plan required careful site analysis and research into both the requirements of native perennials, shrubs, and trees and the availability of these plants at local nurseries. As a part of the process I also made price estimates to share with the Park District and sent my planting plans to contractors as a part of the process of requesting bids.

This planting bed, located in Davis Park in downtown Rockford, Illinois, separates a path from the Rock River. Using mainly perennials already available from the Rockford Park District’s horticulture department, I designed a planting plan that would offer different experiences from either side. Those walking along the path would find a tranquil environment with green, blue, and white plants and flowers. Those viewing the park from across the river (also a city property) would see colorful flowers and foliage.

The Junior Icehogs Training Facility is a former garage, now on the grounds of the Riverview Ice House in downtown Rockford, Illinois. The planting beds surrounding it are narrow, dry, and heavily exposed to salt in the winter. A previous planting plan that included some grasses, flowers, a shrub rose, and a tree had failed, leaving the shrub rose to completely overtake the area. I was asked to design a new planting plan with perennials, rocks, and some form of evergreen shrub or tree in the hopes of adding interest year round. My design is a dense planting plan with a white, blue, and purple color scheme to contrast with the orange building. Some plants already available from the horticulture department provided an under-planting layer to suppress weeds with minimal mulch usage, and larger grasses were used near the building wall to create a layered affect.
