Cup O’Cheer Homes Tour Don’t miss our 19th annual Cup O’Cheer Homes Tour on Friday, November 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event has an open-house format, so guests can set their own schedules to visit five beautiful homes decorated for the holidays, including the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South. Each $30 ticket includes a special Holiday Tea at the House, featuring elegant desserts by French Chef Roland Parny.

The first 1,200 guests to purchase a ticket will also receive a fine china teacup and saucer, designed especially for this event by BridgeBlue Sourcing Partners and Obelisk Home.

Walmart of Nixa

Walmart of Nixa has been providing dinner at the House near Cox South on the second Thursday of each month for more than 2 years. Every dinner is prepared with loving hands, and is a wonderful blessing for the families.

Every other month, Walmart of Nixa prepares a special meal for the families -- breakfast for dinner. It is a favorite among the staff and volunteers who have the pleasure of working Thursday evenings. In addition to providing evening meals for our families, they also donate various items for the House pantries and even bring holiday items such as festive cookie plates. Due to scheduling difficulties, they will not be able to serve meals the next few months.

We anxiously await their return, and look forward to many more great dinners provided by Kathy and friends with Walmart of Nixa! Thank you for helping us create a “home away from home,” complete with home-cooked meals!

House volunteer Anne Schubert recently received the Dorsey Levell Lifetime Achievement Award for 15 years of service to Ambassadors for Children, a program of the Council of Churches. Anne has accomplished so much in the Springfield Community through her 25 years of working with Greene County Juvenile Office Abuse/Neglect Division and advocating for children across the Ozarks. She has been an active volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South since March of 2010; volunteering more than 500 hours! In addition to the work Anne does for the Ronald McDonald House, she also volunteers her time at Ambassadors for Children. We are so proud to see our volunteers recognized by the community for their other philanthropic endeavors. Congratulations, Anne!

Our House Inside the Hospital

When the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Children’s Hospital opened its doors in November 2012, everyone knew it took significant partnering with Mercy Hospital to make it happen. In the nearly two years the House has been open, our families have been the recipients of some beneficial services provided by the staff of Mercy Hospital. These services include daily cleaning of our public restrooms, security services, utilities, telephone and internet connectivity services, linen services and countless other day-today needs. Many people might be surprised to learn about the many different departments within Mercy Hospital that also participate in a very important part of our “home away from home”—our Family Dinner Program!

More than 800 families have been guests of the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Children’s Hospital. For our families, warm meals are a luxury they probably haven’t given much thought to by the end of the day.

Fortunately, our very generous donors make that thought a reality almost every night of the year! “I heard about RMH through a student organization that I was a

part of at MSU. We prepared and served breakfast for families that were staying in the House.”

Also, the people here are so nice and welcoming. This is just a great community to be a part of!”

What is your favorite part about volunteering?

“My favorite part about volunteering is simply just helping people. I strive to be a selfless person who puts others before myself. Volunteering is a great way to pay it forward!”

What are your hobbies while not volunteering for the Ronald McDonald House?

“My hobbies include spending time with friends and family, playing and watching sports, exercising and studying.”

What would you like to share with others thinking about being an RMH volunteer?

“I absolutely love volunteering at RMH. It is an awesome way to help people who truly appreciate your time and commitment.

What else would you like to share about yourself?

“I truly appreciate RMH for allowing me the opportunity to volunteer. I really enjoy my time here when I am volunteering.

Staff Stuff

The House near Cox South would like to welcome our newest Assistant Manager, Sara Wikoff. Sara first became familiar with the organization when she was working with her student organization to adopt meals through the Family Dinner Program. Sara is a junior at Missouri State University, and she is majoring in Health Services and is enrolled in the Accelerated Master’s Public Health Program. Sara is passionate about helping others and loves to travel, so in the summer of 2013, she traveled to Africa on a mission trip where she worked with children and teenagers. She also loves to play volleyball, read and bake. Welcome, Sara! We are excited to continue to welcome you to our management team!

More than 160 individuals provide volunteer service to the Houses and Tooth Truck on a regular basis. Nearly 10,000 families have found a “home away from home” at our two Ronald McDonald Houses in 26 years. Nearly 10 million dollars in dental treatments have been provided to more than 17,000 children since starting the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile (fondly Thanksgiving known as the Tooth Truck). Volunteers By: Emma Davis

The Tooth Truck is blessed to have an energetic, active and caring team of volunteers helping us care for the patients we see each and every day.

Our amazing volunteers help with a wide variety of tasks in and around the Tooth Truck, including walking patients to and from the Tooth Truck, helping patients select items for their goodie bag of dental supplies, talking to patients about the importance of brushing and flossing their teeth, and encouraging patients to take the best care of their smiles for years to come. This incredible group of individuals does more than attend to our patients’ dental hygiene needs.

Other Tooth Truck volunteer duties include helping to process applications, working with our dental assistants to keep everything sparkling, reading to a child who is waiting his or her turn to be seen by the dentist, holding an umbrella on the walk back to school in the rain, tying a shoe that has come untied and a host of other important Tooth Truck necessities. The first and foremost job of a Tooth Truck volunteer is to ensure our patients leave with a smile bigger than the one they had before they came, and to make certain our patients’ selfesteem has blossomed.

The job of a Tooth Truck volunteer is an important one, and the Tooth Truck would not run as smoothly without their help and commitment. Our volunteers dedicate their time each week to ensure our patients have a positive and educational experience. Every volunteer

brings his or her special skill-set to each volunteer shift. While some volunteers love working on the computer processing applications, others excel in one-on-one time with patients, including reading a book or working with the tooth-brushing model.

Every volunteer ensures our patients leave with a better understanding of good dental hygiene and a renewed sense of self-worth. The Tooth Truck would not be the same without the help of our volunteers, and we would not be able to impact nearly as many children’s smiles. Thanks for all that you do!

We want to recognize a very special individual who has been an instrumental part of the Tooth Truck program. Dr. Bill Brell has been committed to our mission of creating cavity-free smiles since before the Tooth Truck was even conceived. He was a founding board member and has completed multiple three-year board terms over the past 12 years. He has worked closely with our staff, volunteers and patients while serving as a temporary dentist on the Tooth Truck since 2008. His love for pediatric dentistry radiates from his constant smile. Dr. Brell, you have helped ensure the success of our program since its inception and you hold a very special place in our hearts.
