27th Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner The 27th Annual Volunteer Recognition dinner was held on April 26th at Guy Mace’s Route 66 Car Museum (opening to the public this June). With the help of the Tooth Truck Inc., and Ronald McDonald House Charities Boards of Directors, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner surrounded by more than 60 classic cars and celebrated the HEART of our programs -- our volunteers!

When did you start providing meals for families at the Ronald McDonald House?

We started providing meals for families at the Ronald McDonald House in January of this year.

Steve is the General Manager for Houlihan’s South, and Tony is the Executive Chef.

How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program?

Steve previously helped provide dinners with his former employer. When the opportunity arose for community outreach, Steve recruited Tony to help serve meals with Houlihan’s.

What is your favorite thing about participating in the family dinner program?

My favorite thing about participating in the Family Dinner Program is the relief for the families. It allows families to not have to worry about what they will eat for dinner, and allows families to relax a bit and focus on bigger things.

Do you have any favorite memories?

Our favorite memories are the smiles from siblings of the patients and seeing the parents interact and talk with other families. The Ronald McDonald House is really a great place!

What would you like to say to other groups who are considering volunteering with the Family Dinner Program?

I would say they should go for it! It is a great program and seeing the community pitch in a little goes such a long way to help families going through tough situations.

Around the Houses We are thrilled to have a porch swing at the House near Cox South for our families to relax in and enjoy the beautiful weather! The porch swing was made possible because of the generosity of the members of Gamma Mu Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi at Missouri State University. Part of the proceeds they raised at philanthropy events throughout the year were used to underwrite our porch remodel that was completed last fall in addition to the new swing!

We also want to thank Jason Bekebrede with Monticello Custom Homes and Remodeling for donating the labor to install the porch swing and the materials to build the frame for the swing. We appreciate their generosity to help finish this project in time for the spring weather. This will help make the House feel even more like a Home for our families.

The Web.com Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper will be held August 11th - 14th at Highland Springs Country Club. The Ronald McDonald House has been a beneficiary since the inception of this event in 1990, providing over $1,100,000 in support to our organization alone. More than half of the annual funding we receive through this event is from TLC Properties’ CHARITY SWEEPSTAKES TICKETS. The program features 500 prizes valued at $25 each, giving each Sweepstakes ticketholder a 1 in 16 chance to win a prize. In addition, every ticketholder also has a 1 in 8,000 chance to win a 2016 Ford® F-150 Pickup Truck or $10,000 cash prize. Sweepstakes tickets are available NOW for $25 each. One-hundred-percent of your purchase will benefit the children and families of our two Ronald McDonald Houses if you designate the Houses as your preferred charity. The Sweepstakes Ticket also serves as a grounds season pass for the tournament, August 11th-14th.

All-Star Weekend Save the Date: June 3 & 4

It’s an ALL-STAR weekend June 3-4, 2016.

The 15th Annual Sertoma GRIN IRON CLASSIC (all-star high school football game) and the 5th Annual Sertoma GRIN ACTION CLASSIC (all-star high school volleyball tournament) will take place at Parkview High School in Springfield. RMHC of the Ozarks and the All-Star Smiles Sertoma Club are hosting this “All-Star Weekend” featuring Southwest Missouri’s all-stars, all graduated seniors. And…it all benefits the Tooth Truck! Volunteers are needed for both events and we’d love for YOU to join us.

Share a Heart

The 23rd Annual Share a Heart Campaign numbers are in, and we are very pleased to announce another successful year! With $100,850 worth of hearts adopted and $18,000 in generosity from our sponsors, we are once again impressed with the dedication of our supporters.

These numbers aren’t possible without the support of our community, and we thank you for sharing your heart and helping us expand the mission of the Ronald McDonald Houses.

Our reigning “Share a Heart” Champion also keeps his title with an impressive $14,100 raised by TJ Slocum. TJ is a committed volunteer, and with the help of his parents, Randy and Debbie, continues to show his enthusiasm by selling more hearts than anyone each year. Since 2008, TJ has raised $72,324 for the Ronald McDonald Houses of the Ozarks, and we are very grateful for his dedication.

Changing Lives Through the Healthy Smiles Academy By: April Roll The Healthy Smiles Academy is so lucky to work with amazing teachers, like April Roll, who teaches Kindergarten at Fremont Elementary.

This program wouldn’t be successful without the support of passionate teachers who truly care about each of the children in their classroom, as if they were their own. April shares her experience with the Healthy Smiles Academy at Fremont. We love to see how this amazing program can make a big, life-long impact on the lives of these students.

Many of us take for granted the simple morning routine of brushing our teeth.

It’s just a little habit we do each day without even thinking about it, but what about children throughout our school district? Do they have this habit of good, daily brushing? Unfortunately for many of them, the answer is no.

This is especially true for younger children at my school who have not had the opportunity or resources to

make brushing part of their daily routine.

Thanks to the Tooth Truck’s Healthy Smiles Academy, all Kindergarteners at Fremont Elementary now have the opportunity to make brushing part of their morning routine at school.

We started this program in January and it has already made a huge impact. Tamara Maddox, the Program Manager of the Healthy Smiles Academy, and her team of volunteers came in and demonstrated the proper way to brush. Their excitement and passion turned teeth brushing into an important yet fun part of our morning routine.

My students eat breakfast in the classroom and then brush their teeth at the sink with minimal help from me. In fact, the kids remind me to put their toothpaste out if I do not have it out when they enter the classroom each morning. If they see the tube of

toothpaste is getting low they even ask to make sure I have more. It’s neat to listen to my kids talk with each other about brushing. They have said things like “I’m going to brush extra good so I can have sparkly teeth” and “don’t forget to brush so your breath doesn’t stink.” I’ve even heard them discussing brushing their teeth at night so their whole body is clean for bed. Wow, the little things truly do have a huge impact!

Brushing at school wouldn’t be possible without the Tooth Truck’s Healthy Smiles Academy and all of its supporters and volunteers. Not only do they supply all the materials needed for kids to brush at school, but they also send home a bag of goodies with everything needed to brush at home, including floss. My class and I thank everyone who has helped make this program possible. It’s a much needed life skill that will not be forgotten.

Garrett is currently attending Missouri State University as a predental student, majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. VOLUNTEER TIP OF THE MONTH Spring is here! Did you know you can use blue Dawn dishwashing liquid to clean your gutters? Mix half of a small bottle in a bucket of water; with a sponge mop and a little elbow grease, rub down the gutters and wash.

Tougher stains may require a second wash. This method is a little messy, but not as much as a power washer and way cheaper.

We are thrilled to welcome Josie Greeno to the Assistant Manager team for the House at Mercy Kids. Josie is no stranger to the Ronald McDonald House as she has previously served in a volunteer capacity at the Ronald McDonald House in Kansas City and House at Mercy Kids. She brings a generous heart for our mission, a positive attitude and contagious smile with her to every shift. Josie is currently attending Cox College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and is obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree in Science Nursing. Josie and her husband Adam are active outdoorsy people who enjoy running, camping and hiking together. Josie is also an active runner and recently competed in a 10k in Eureka Springs, AR, where she placed first in her age division; along with training for a half marathon all last month in March. Welcome to the team, Josie!
