ust over three months into his tenure as Dutchess County Executive, Marcus Molinaro will address the Hudson Valley business community at the March Contact Breakfast on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 a.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center. The keynote address will be Molinaro’s first to an all-Chamber audience since he took office in January. Molinaro has made the fiscal health of Dutchess County a top priority in his first term. The county, as stated during his State of the County address in February, faces increasing service demands, the challenge of the new state tax-levy cap and continuing state mandates. He also made mention of his particular concern of the dwindling amount of money available in governmentcontrolled rainy-day funds, a situation he hopes to rectify. During his campaign, Molinaro pledged to aid the growth of county commerce by restructuring the economic development apparatus put in place in the mid-1990s and working with local and countywide government officials to cut through much of the red tape as-
sociated with starting and maintaining a small business. former The state assemblyman has also promised an MolINARo increased focus on attracting new business to the region. he Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce extends a helping hand back to the community: the foresight of our Chamber Executive leadership has led to the development, growth and prosperity of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation, also known as the Chamber Foundation. The Chamber will always be an advocate for hundreds of area not-for-profits, and the Chamber Foundation is a fine example of what our organization does to foster non-profit organizations and community growth. Developed to promote education and training programs, the Foundation has established eleven scholarships, a Youth Leadership program, college campus tours, and Leadership Dutchess. These scholarships and programs ensure the enrichment of our Hudson Valley residents and offers opportunity to further their education. We all know that knowledge is power, and the Foundation is a model of practicing what is preached; through assisting individuals of all ages with the potential to succeed and become the future leaders of our region. Chamber President and CEO Charlie North is proud to announce that three new staff members have joined the team. As with all other Chamber staffers, if at any time you as a member have a concern or an idea about how the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce may better serve you, do not hesitate to make contact at your earliest convenience. Nancy Amy rejoins the Chamber family as Director of Member Services. She is responsible for reaching out and educating memabout bers AMY all the resources and benefits that are available to them through the Chamber, helping members develop strategic marketing plans utilizing the Chamber’s advertising options, coordinating and scheduling the guest list for the Chamber’s weekly radio talk shows, coordinating both online and traditional ribbon cuttings and much more. Amy will serve as a direct point of contact for anyone seeking to learn about what’s available from the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce or those hoping to get the most out of their membership. Angela Signor comes to the Chamber as Director of Media Design following stints as a designer at Westfair, Inc., (publishers of HV Biz) and the Poughkeepsie Jour-
nal. She will be responsible for the Chamber’s entire web and print design catalog, including the monthly Bottom Line newsletter, annual Membership Directory and much more. She is available to assist members with SIGNoR the technical side of graphic design, and to serve as a guide when designing promotional materials, new websites, and more. Rounding out the staff expansion, the Chamber’s Workforce Development Center has hired an additional Case Manager. Susan Grecke, the new Responsible Parent Initiative Program (RPI) Case Manager, will be working with children and families by referred the Dutchess County Department of SerSocial Since vices. 2001, the ReGRECKE sponsible Parent Initiative program assists those parents who qualify for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families that are in danger of becoming sanctioned or who are currently on sanction with the positive resolution of self-sufficiency issues. The program helps move families into compliance with Department of Social Services (DSS) regulations. RPI services include an intensive interview with the participant and family members to assess the home, family and work life situations that may be preventing the parent from complying with DSS requirements. There is also a tremendous opportunity for the Baby Boomer generation to transfer their wealth and help allocate a portion of their estates to local foundations. A recent study commissioned by the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley, found that if just 5% were allocated to local foundations, the result would be an additional $55 million in annual giving. It’s important to not only realize what organizations like the Dyson Foundation and Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley do, but to help in whatever ways we all can to emulate these organizations. The economy has shown signs of coming back, but there are still many people and organizations helping them in need of our support. Please be generous with your money but also with your time. Remember … give local first.

everal months now past the traditional giving season, it’s important to remember those less fortunate as well as the numerous nonprofit organizations in the Hudson Valley region. There are many organizations around that give generously, but none more than the Dyson Foundation. At the forefront of philanthropy, the Dyson Foundation awards an average of $17 million in grants each year, much of it in Dutchess and the surrounding counties of the Mid-Hudson Valley. Non-profit organizations make up a significant part of our economy, adding jobs and services to our great region. And the Dyson Foundation plays a large part in supporting their work. They also fund a comprehensive study called Many Voices, One Valley, produced with the Marist Institute of Public Opinion. The third such study is due out later in 2012. This demographic information provides a great view of our economy and helps us all learn about spending habits, allowing area businesses to get to know more about their potential customers.

Most of the time we don’t even think about the process itself because we’re so used to following these specifics steps that they become almost second-nature. However, every now and then businesses should be reviewing the processes they have in place to see if there are ways they can make improvements that equal better production or lower costs. With technology for the business community changing so rapidly, there may also be an opportunity to automate some of these processes. Pamela Landolt has been appointed acting executive director of the Saint Francis Health Care Foundation. Landolt has been integral in many Foundation initiatives including the $15 million capital campaign completed in 2008, has brought in five- and six-figure donations, formed the Mair Legacy Society for bequest donors,
established many new department protocols and developed a strong fundraising team at the Foundation. PartyTime Rentals announced that it will be opening a new location in Beekman. The new store, located at 2575 Route 55, is scheduled to open late winter 2012. Our new location will help us to operate more efficiently, create local jobs and to offer a retail presence to the residents of Beekman and the surrounding towns and villages.” said Darren Morizet, President & CEO of PartyTime Rentals, located in Wappingers Falls. PartyTime Rentals’ retail store and rental operations in the Wappingers Falls location will remain open. The Poughkeepsie Public Library District Board of Trustees welcomes first-time Trustee Nathaniel Almeida and re-elected incumbent Trustee Miriam Zimet-Aaron to the Board effective January 1, 2012. Almeida, representing the city of Poughkeepsie, succeeds retiring Trustee Mary McGowan. McGowan completed two fiveyear terms in December of 2011, including two years as President of the Board. Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley announces that 69 different scholarship programs through affiliates in Dutchess and Ulster are available online this year to eligible students. Each year, the Community Foundations’ competitive scholarship program results in the Foundation awarding more than $250,000 to eligible students in Dutchess, Ulster, Putnam and surrounding counties. He joined the company in November 2011 to support their primary network technician. His previous experience running an electronics department for Staples Inc., as well as handling customer service and providing technical assistance to customers for 10 years has helped IES maintain its goal of great customer service and technical skills. Greg was born and raised in Goshen, and moved to Albany in 2001 to continue his education. He graduated Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) with an Associate’s degree in Computer Information Systems with a concentration in Network Administration. Hudson River Housing, a member of the national NeighborWorks® network, announced that it received $130,700 in flexible grants from NeighborWorks® America, which will support the agency’s affordable housing and community development activities, at a time when communities need investment most. “This flexible funding source will help Hudson River Housing provide operating support that will allow the organization to continue running its key programs,” said Ed Murphy, executive director of Hudson River Housing. “It also includes funding for rehabilitation of a vacant house in the City of Poughkeepsie, in which we hope to create four rental units for returning veterans.” Diane Hart has been named by United Way of the DutchessOrange Region as Director of Community Impact as announced by President and CEO Don Hammond. As Community Impact Director Hart’s will engage all private, nonprofit and public sectors throughout the Dutchess and Orange County communities to partner with United Way in addressing the critical needs in Education, Income and Health facing the region.
Hart comes to United Way from the post as grants and development manager of AHome Housing in Pleasantville, Westchester County. She has also served as director of state business development for the American Red Cross in Greater New York, AmeriCorps VISTA program manager, independent program evaluator for the Orange County Youth Bureau and mentoring manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. The Know-Show traditionally draws electrical contractors from Dutchess, Columbia, Ulster, Orange, Putnam, Greene, and Westchster counties and from western Connecticut for educational seminars and the opportunity to meet with vendors and manufacturers showcasing new and state of the art products. The show opens at 7 a.m. with registration and a two-hour opportunity to meet with exhibitors before the first seminar at 9 a.m. Additional exhibitor-networking/ business opportunities include a mid-morning break and an extended (one and a half hour) lunch break. The day wraps up by 5 p.m. Exhibitors will be located in the hall adjacent to the meeting room and a spacious lobby area. ne of the key components to the success of the Youth Leadership program is exposing students to role models in the business community and giving them a broader sense of the opportunities available to them upon graduation and beyond. Each year, the 11th grade students from the Youth Leadership program are tasked with assisting in the planning of a Career Night, where over 30 business and professional leaders participate in roundtable discussions with students to discuss career and life strategies. This event is extremely useful for students as they benefit from talking to members of the business community and become aware of a number of different occupational fields, the education required and what it takes to get them there. Food pantry needs donations
T
he Beverly Closs Food Pantry at Dutchess Outreach is encountering bare shelves as a result of a demanding holiday season. The Food Pantry provides a three day supply of food to lowincome families, senior citizens, the unemployed and to those who are unable to work. There are people who are depending on the pantry to help them make ends meet, and right now it is difficult keeping up with that demand. In the past 4 months, there has been a 10% increase in the number of patrons
needing food for themselves and their families. Items needed the most include: canned meats (such as hash, stews, etc.), tuna, canned vegetables, fruits, soups, canned yams, potatoes, pasta/spaghetti with sauce, peanut butter, jelly, cereals and juices. s its President, I am pleased to announce that the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce is in complete support of the Dutchess County Fleet Week 2012 Committee’s fundraising efforts to bring up to 50 officers and crew members of the USS Roosevelt (DDG 80), the official Navy vessel of Dutchess County, as honored guests to participate in Hyde Park’s Memorial Day Parade as well as the American Legion and National Park Service annual Memorial Day events.
Donations are needed to provide transportation, meals and lodging for the participating crew. Two donation opportunities are being provided.
