Local races key to economic future

lection Day is approaching fast. Do you know where the candidates stand on key local issues? If not, there’s still time to find out. The Chamber’s Legislative Action Committee is devoted to advocating for our local businesses with elected officials. It also works hard to help acquaint the community with candidates before they are elected so people can make informed choices at the polls. So far, the Chamber has offered two forums so this year – one co-hosted with the Poughkeepsie Journal featuring the six City of Poughkeepsie mayoral candidates before the primary, and another at the September Contact Breakfast with the county executive candidates Marcus Molinaro and Diane Jablonski. A third

forum will be held at our October Contact Breakfast with the winners of the City of Poughkeepsie mayoral primary, Randy Johnson and Rob Rolison. If you missed the first two forums, you can watch videos of them at www.poughkeepsiejour nal.com. While some people may not think local elections are as important as presidential or national races, no responsible businessperson can hold this view. For mem-

Message froM the Chair:

bers of the Chamber, the local elections are at least as important as national ones, if not more so. It’s an important facet of Thinking Local First. Whoever gets elected on November 3 will have a crucial role in determining the path of our Hudson Valley economy and the ultimate health of our business community moving forward. That’s too important to ignore and deserves our full attention. I hope you’ll take advantage of the City of Poughkeepsie mayoral forum at the next Contact Breakfast on October 21. We’ve done our part in providing the forums, and when Election Day rolls around, it will be your turn to do yours. Get out and vote. Our local business community’s economic future depends on it.

cycling effort is sponsored by Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. and Quality Environmental Solutions & Technologies (QuEST). There will be a cell phone recycling box in the Chamber’s lobby at One Civic Center Plaza, Fourth Floor, in Poughkeepsie through November. Boxes will also be available at Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp., 284 South Ave., Poughkeepsie, and at Quality Environmental Solutions & Technologies, Inc., 1376 Route 9, Wappingers Falls. In addition, recycling boxes will be set up at the Chamber’s Business Expo coming up at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. October 28. The boxes will also be available at the Chamber’s monthly Contact Breakfasts and Business After Hours events. “The recycling of old cell phones in an appropriate manner and with a responsible vendor is as important as the act of recycling. E-waste recycling has taken a circuitous route to being more sustainable. We are proud to support the Chamber’s program to recycle old phones,” said James Kopp, co-chair of the Chamber’s Living Green Subcommittee.

A

re you in? Lots of local businesses have already said they’re in and signed up to exhibit at the Chamber’s Business Expo set for the end of this month from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 28. If you’re not in yet, there’s still time. Dozens of regional Hudson Valley businesses of all types will have booths at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center, where there will be a Hudson Valley food court and lots of great interactive exhibits throughout the day. As one of the biggest trade shows of its kind, the Business Expo is a not-to-be missed opportunity to showcase your business to a sizeable audience in the community while exploring the other great offerings as well. It’s also an excellent opportunity to network with other business people,

exchange business cards and forge connections that can prove mutually beneficial for everyone who participates. Part of the Chamber’s mission is benefitting local businesses by encouraging people to Think Local First, and what better way to accomplish that goal than helping our Hudson Valley businesses gather together to promote their products and services in a single location? We’re really excited about the Expo and hope you will be, too. Get on board today – contact Vice President of Events Carmela Spreer and sign up to be an exhibitor. You’ll be glad you did.

Are you in?

Mentoring stint at Journal helps student find her voice

“He told me that even if there are obstacles in my way, I have to keep pushing forward.” These are the words of Poughkeepsie High School senior Tamika Mincey describing her experience with her mentor, Irwin Goldberg of the Poughkeepsie Journal. Tamika participated in the Career Action Mentoring Program during the past school year and received the opportunity to participate in a Job Shadow Day with Goldberg, where she experienced a typical day for a journalist and learned how the Journal operates. Tamika and Goldberg kept in touch after the mentoring program ended, which resulted in her receiving the opportunity of a lifetime: She was given the chance to publish her first article in the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Below, Tamika speaks about her mentor and how it felt to publish her first article: “Recently, I have been given the opportunity to write for Verge

Try these tips when hiring a new worker

T

he prospect of hiring a new employee can be overwhelming and frustrating. The bar for new employees is often set high with the expectation that they will come in and be productive contributors to the daily flow on day one. Everyone encounters a learning curve when taking a new job, but for some, a little help making the climb to experienced employee is necessary. The following are four steps to make that climb as smooth and speedy as possible for your new employee. 1. Write a job description: Do not assume everyone knows what it means to be a cashier, stock clerk or office assistant. There is usually much more to a job than the obvious, so provide a job description. A job description should include at a minimum the position title, hours and shifts, wage and reporting relationships (by position not person), general responsibilities and key tasks, qualifications and skills as well as education. If you don’t have a job description handy visit onetonline. org and create one using the site’s detailed occupational information. A job description is a communication tool that sets an expectation.

2. Discuss the job description: You don’t have to look past your own experiences to know firsthand that there is more than one way to complete any task. Review the job description with your new employee. Not all employees take initiative or notice how tasks get done around them, but that does not make them bad employees. Don’t lower the bar; just point it out. Reviewing the job

description together provides you an opportunity to communicate how things are done in your business. You can also prioritize the job description and point out tasks that can be done when there is a lull in the shift. 3. Allow questions: If employees is intimidated or afraid to ask for clarification, unnecessary employee turnover could result. It is not uncommon that questions arise once we are in a job. A stock clerk may not have really understood that even in this position

there is customer interaction, and customer service and may need to understand why a pleasant attitude is important. If your schedule is tight, provide a time of day that you’ll be available to answer questions should they arise. 4. Provide feedback: Let your employees know how they are doing. Are they accomplishing the tasks assigned? Are they keeping busy even during the slow times? Is there a process or technique you should have been more specific about? Feedback encourages what is working and corrects what is not. It’s proactive interaction that can prevent future problems. Using a job description to frame your conversations in the first weeks of work provides structure and focus. It also can help eliminate assumptions that create miscommunication and stress. When hiring a new employee, it’s OK to keep the bar high, just be prepared to have a stepstool available for those who need a little help reaching it at first. Laraine Kautz is executive director of the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board. Reach her at LKautz@dcwib.org or 845-463-0517 ext. 204

New Youth Leadership class inspires

A

s executive director of The Chamber Foundation, Inc., I not only coordinate the programming and events of the Foundation, but I also get to work with all the individuals we benefit. This past September, I began my fourth year with Youth Leadership by kicking off the Class of 2016. Each year, I am amazed how this program continues to grow and the level of students who are enrolled. This year’s class particularly stands out. Bright, innovative and driven, these mostly sophomores and juniors come from vari-

ous school districts throughout Dutchess County with a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Some are leaders in their schools/ communities, and others are just learning to break out of their shells. No matter the differences, they all take time out of their busy schedules to develop and prepare

for the future at each Youth Leadership session. Equally as impressive is the volunteer mentor staff . This year, 15 adults and two junior staff members joined us. They will attend the monthly sessions as well as regularly meet as a staff to review programming, resolve issues and enhance the curriculum. All adult mentors are assigned a certain number of students to whom they provide individual attention, support and guidance. This program would not be possible without donor support. A special thank you to our program sponsor, The Gap, Inc., and supporting partner, IBM. Finally, thank you to Marist College for being our host sponsor and giving Youth Leadership students the opportunity to experience leadership programming on a campus of higher learning. Working within this extraordinary program, I am confident our Youth Leadership Class of 2016 will achieve amazing results, elevating our work and continuing to allow The Chamber Foundation, Inc., to develop tomorrow’s leaders today.
