Love Your Hair

A great hair day can boost your confidence and National Hair Loss is here to help you get the hair you deserve. Treatments including Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP), Amniotic Fluid Therapy, and Hair Analysis Tests are helping men and women love their hair again! Treatments, in addition to our administering techniques, results in better outcomes, and fewer treatments for our patients. Our specialty is hair loss and we offer the best for our patients.

PRP for Hair Rejuvenation

Boost hair growth and achieve thicker hair with our PRP treatments. PRP contains essential growth factors to stimulate follicles and help with the regeneration process. PRP activates platelets to regenerate cells, accelerating hair growth in an unprecedented way. We implement a state of the art centrifuge that yields more platelet units with results after one treatment.

“Amnio” - Anti-aging & Hair Growth Treatment

Our most recent therapy uses amniotic fluid to regenerate follicles and stimulate hair growth. Follicles that are thinning or have stopped producing a hair (dormant) can resurrect and start growing again. Amniotic fluid contains more growth factors than PRP alone, and is 1,000 times stronger with results lasting 10-20 months. We are one of the few facilities in the country offering this treatment.

Hair Analysis Test - Achieve healthy, gorgeous hair

Are the foods and products you love causing your hair loss? Our Hair Analysis Test determines the cause of your thinning hair and provides a treatment plan to restore healthy thicker hair. By testing just a few hairs, or nail clippings, we get an analysis of the person’s food/drink intolerances (different from an allergy test), toxic metals, and invasive organisms contributing to a “leaky gut.” This breakthrough testing is one we recommend to anyone who wants to gain insights into what is happening in the body internally that may be causing hair loss. It’s not only about restoring your hair; it’s about restoring your confidence. Featured in:

Parisian

Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon

J

o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

Jo Paris Salon & Spa is located at 14202 N. Scottsdale Rd. and at (480) 663-8994 or visit their website at www.joparissalon.com

This month, when it comes to affairs of the heart, we’ve got you more than covered. Toast your love for our great state with a cocktail that’s in homage to just that (page 114), or, if love has you feeling a little bitter, there’s a spirit for exactly that, featured in 10 drinks on page 112. Cozy up for after-dinner drinks (page 78), spice things up with fiery foods (page 116), plan a fun date night (page 76), and whisk away your special someone on a hot air balloon ride (page 106). Short on ideas for lavishing your valentine? Check out gifts for him and her (page 90) and some ways to ring in romance (page 92). Plus, flowers that are seemingly forever (page 101), fashion that says “I love you” (page 88), and a two-in-one fragrance with florals (page 83) are always in style. We’re also shaking things up a bit with, perhaps, a bit of a “ladies first” mentality and definitely one of female empowerment. Usually, our singles feature includes both men and women, but we decided to make it ladies-only, highlighting seven eligible Valley women who are fierce and fabulous. Could one of them be a match for you? Find out on page 52. Of course, there’s also love of a different kind, be that for a passion or a cause. Like in every magazine issue, we showcase people living that love out loud by helping others and bettering our community with their careers and compassionate hearts. This month, those include jewelry designer Meredith Young, who gives back through her beautiful creations (page 36), and PGA Tour golfer Ricky Barnes (page 46), who is committed to improving the well-being of our youth. Now, that’s something to love. Wherever February leads you, may you find love and joy in the small moments, the big ones, and everything in between. FROM FOOTBALL TO FINANCE Trevor Wilde brings teamwork from playing on the field to planning at the firm

There are a lot of lessons about both work and life that can be learned on the football field, according to Trevor Wilde. The oldest of four kids, three of whom are adopted (including him), Wilde grew up in North Scottsdale, playing football from a young age.

“Learning how to set short- and long-term goals, both big and small, was ingrained in me from the first moment I stepped on the field,” Wilde says. “And while not all goals were always realistic or immediately achievable, I learned that setbacks were only temporary and to always push forward.”

So Scottsdale! February ‘18

31

Pulse UP CLOSE Push forward, he did, eventually earning a linebacker position on Horizon High School’s nationally ranked football team – a team that would go on to win the 1995 Arizona State Football Championship. “As my position’s name would imply, we linebackers literally line up behind the defensive linemen. What most people don’t realize is the amount of verbal and nonverbal communication required by the position to be effective,” he says. “We also have to read plays quickly and respond immediately because one misstep can result in missing the tackle, or causing someone else to miss something critical.” Wilde continued to pursue football throughout college, eventually walking on to the University of Arizona’s football team, where he red-shirted one year and played two years on the national stage. “Especially then, competing on a national stage, I really started to see how every single play, every single practice, every single win, and every single defeat was preparing me for my future in business and beyond,” Wilde says. During this time, Wilde also saw the critical role that understanding teamwork, taking calculated risks, and having the ability to be coached played in the lives of everyone around him. After graduation, Wilde moved back to Scottsdale and started a career in the finance industry, where his father had worked successfully for several years. “When I began in the industry in 2000, I worked for a big firm, but we focused very narrowly on retirement planning and investments,” he says. “Used to working on a team that always had an eye on the bigger picture, I found myself wanting to do more to help my clients beyond simply working toward their retirement goals.”

Beyond the Norm So, in 2003, Wilde broke away from the traditional planning mold, partnering with his father to form Wilde Wealth Management Group. His mission was two-fold: to offer boutique, customized investment and planning advice in a fiduciary capacity, and to offer clients expanded in-house services from fellow independent experts and specialists in the fields of legal, taxes, risk management, family services, real estate, and even insurance. Over the next 10 years, Wilde Wealth Management Group would earn accolades from Forbes, Barron’s, The Arizona Republic and Cetera while bringing independent investment advisors, certified financial planners, attorneys, mortgage specialists, an insurance team, and even a certified public accountant on board – and in-house – as trusted partners. Together, the team is not only able to take all the pieces of a client’s financial puzzle and organize them, but also use them to build a solid foundation that will serve clients and their families for generations to come. “Today, we have more than $750 million in assets under management, and we serve individuals and families as well as businesses across the Southwest. We’ve grown to four offices across Arizona, including a 7,200-square-foot headquarters in the heart of Scottsdale,” says Wilde, who married a fellow Horizon

alum along the way and is now a father to four daughters: Peyton, Presley, Piper and Paige. With the business’ roots firmly planted, Wilde also wanted to ensure he took one more lesson from the football field and translated it into his life – the concept of community stewardship. “Every team I was ever a part of believed that we were not strictly meant to represent our school or organization on the field, but off of it as well,” says Wilde, who has worked with his office since day one to develop projects and programs that positively impact the community at large. “We call our collective efforts our Wilde for Arizona Community Outreach Program,” he says. “Through it, we empower our entire team to be active volunteers, fundraisers and neighborhood champions, both together and on their own.” Wilde for Arizona recently stepped up to raise 400 toys as well as cash donations, altogether totaling more than $8,300 for Toys for Tots in December. The firm also works as volunteers with local food banks, Child Crisis Arizona, and Sunshine Acres Children’s Home. “While I am still part of a team – both one at work and one at home – I’m not a linebacker anymore, but, instead, the coach. Today, my role is to build leaders, encourage teamwork, instill work ethic, and remain their rock in both victory and defeat.”

Who Did Your Hair?

SCOTTSDALE’S HAIR COLOR GURU, ROD GENTRY, IS THE GO-TO EXPERT FOR COLORING YOUR TRESSES

HAIR COLOR IS TRICKY. Ensuring the perfect shade, finishing the process with hair that is still healthy, creating the perfect look—there are not many who can do it all or who are known as the go-to expert in color. But now Scottsdale has a color guru. Rod Gentry, one of the industry’s color experts, has relocated from Chicago— where he spent 24 years working in the field—to Scottsdale. His clients know four main things about Rod: They’ll receive undivided, personalized attention at their appointment (no double booking!); he’ll use only the top and best products to ensure their hair stays healthy; his wealth of knowledge and expertise will allow them to achieve the look they want; and that the color will be perfect, every time. Rod approaches hair color differently than others, first working with a client to determine the look they want, and then taking into account the client’s complexion and lifestyle to make sure that the end result will be something that is both flattering and workable.

One of his main focuses is always on the health of the hair, and so he uses only highend, enzyme-based developers (rather than peroxide-based ones) so that hair is left in a better condition, and extremely shiny. He also always finishes a color process with a conditioning treatment as part of the color service. “You can have long hair and great color, but if it’s damaged, it won’t look as good,” he explains.

HIS WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE WILL ALLOW THEM TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK THEY WANT; AND THAT THE COLOR WILL BE PERFECT, EVERY TIME. He relentlessly pursues education to stay at the top of his field, traveling worldwide to learn about the newest innovative techniques, products and knowledge, training in such places as London and New York. “I really think that education is the key to success,” he explains. Rod’s services include single process color, highlights, color gloss, color paneling, ombre, extended conditioning, color correction, color removal and more, as well as cutting-edge haircuts. “I guarantee my work. Period,” he says.

TOWER OF POWER Commercial real estate broker Adam Finkel is building legacy

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Adam Finkel owns commercial real estate finance firm Tower Capital with his best friend, Kyle McDonough. Together, the two have worked synergistically to create a company that is making a powerful name for itself. The duo attended Arizona State University and hit it off immediately when they had a business class together. Finkel went on to intern at Scottsdale-based LevRose Commercial Real Estate, where he grew in the industry and gained real world experience. “I was handling office leasing and sales, some retail and industrial, and representing landlords and tenants,” Finkel says. “It gave me a great education with different property types and also taught me how to negotiate the inner workings of a commercial real estate transaction.” Finkel then moved to Los Angeles to work for a regional tenant representation firm. Several years later, he returned to Phoenix and was ready for a bigger challenge. At the time, McDonough happened to be at a similar career crossroads as Finkel. Their love of commercial real estate was as strong as their combined talents in the industry, and they founded Tower Capital in 2014. Even the name of Tower Capital has special meaning. “We were trying to think of something that was lofty and sounded like a bigger company that had been around forever,” Finkel explains. “I’m a huge fan of medieval history ... What does a tower do? It protects the king’s gold and the investments and gives you a lay of the land. I thought this went well with what we’re doing with people’s money and capital markets.” This lofty name fits Tower Capital’s growth. Recently, the company secured a $28 million acquisition bridge loan for a renovation and rebrand of the old Days Inn on Scottsdale Road, north of the Scottsdale entertainment district. The hotel will be remodeled and rebranded as a boutique hotel catering to clientele that are drawn to the Downtown Scottsdale area. Learn more about Tower Capital at www.towercapllc.com.

GOLDEN TOUCH

Meredith Young combines her love of creating fine jewelry with philanthropy

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Meredith Young is a jewelry designer that seamlessly combines passion for jewelry design, business savvy and philanthropy. Her various areas of expertise culminated in the founding of her company two years ago. Young, who started metalsmithing in high school, found herself at a creative crossroads in college. Though she ultimately majored in art history and English, she later enrolled in metalsmithing classes at night while working a successful day job in the recruiting industry, eventually ending up in the technology sector. Working hard and procuring the necessary tools and equipment, eventually the time was right to found her company and commit to creating jewelry full-time. Young orchestrates fine jewelry designs that think outside the proverbial jewelry box. Her work often reflects imagery from the natural world with the incorporation of mini-geodes and leaf and spider web motifs. “My source of inspiration is two parts. One being sheer inspiration from the raw materials, whether it’s a different kind of geometric-cut opal or rough tourmaline with a certain type of inclusion in it, and the second being what happens during the fabrication when I make prototypes,” she says. “Sometimes [when I’m] out in the studio, I’ll be making something and then I get an idea, and I give that a chance.” Young currently serves on the board of TAG Ranch & Foundation in Utah and supports Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, a place she visits often to see family. Locally, she has also worked with Mothers Awareness on School-Age Kids (MASK) and Breakfast Club 100 through Valley of the Sun United Way, the latter of which receives a portion of proceeds from Young’s jewelry line. She also has some designs in the works that will specifically benefit moms. “It’s a legacy thing. I don’t have kids, so this is my legacy,” she says. Meredith Young Jewelry is available at Stephanie’s in Old Town Scottsdale, or online at www.meredithyoungjewelry.com.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Aaron Fox nails cool comfort and classy casual

BY EMILY GLYNN / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

The stereotypical college student boasts a closet inundated with baggy sweats and school T-shirts. Aaron Fox, currently studying corporate accounting at Arizona State University, is a different story. Even when he’s digging a laidback look, the fulltime student turns to refined brands like lululemon and Adidas, having mastered the tricky art of athleisure. “My obsession with Adidas sneakers came after a trip to Italy and Spain where I saw them paired with every pant imaginable,” he says. “That’s when I realized how versatile the look is.” Fox rotates between three different styles and six different pairs, often coupling them with lululemon Off the Chain pants and an ultra-soft Fresh Clean Tee. And while he is undeniably a comfort connoisseur, Fox’s wardrobe is thoroughly prepped for occasions requiring a higher level of class. There’s just one caveat. “I no longer compromise comfort when trying to look stylish. [As a result], I find myself buying a lot of the same styles in different colors,” he says, alluding to his collection of J Brand Kane denim, Ted Baker Endurance button-downs and To Boot New York footwear. As for accessories? Fox is a strong proponent of the pocket square. “That little accent piece is a gamechanger.”

What are the best and worst pieces of style advice you’ve ever received? The best: Grow your hair out! After I got married, I went a full year without cutting my hair and it was down to my shoulders. The worst: Cornrow your long hair. What is the most expensive clothing item or accessory you’ve ever bought? My everyday Salvatore Ferragamo bifold wallet and Gucci wayfarer-style sunglasses. An outfit isn’t complete without … The right hair. I’ve been known to mix up my hair styles frequently. I also love a nice scent. My go-to cologne is Bleu by Chanel.

NIGHT SHIFT

Christina Edgar delivers classy, practical style every hour of the day

BY EMILY GLYNN / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

In some lines of work, comfort trumps fashionability. Christina Edgar, a labor and delivery nurse at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center, is proof that the two aren’t mutually exclusive. “Working nights from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. is not glamorous,” she says. “It’s a fast-paced, think-on-your-feet kind of environment … Comfy and functional are two pretty common trends in our profession.” Through trial and error, Edgar has pieced together the perfect uniform: modern workwear from FIGS Scrubs to accentuate her silhouette and Asics GEL running shoes to combat long hours circulating the OR, accented with a rose gold Apple watch, seasonal badge holders, and delicate stud earrings for a practical yet personal touch. Though her off days call for a slightly different look, Edgar’s proclivity for dainty jewelry transitions well from work to play. Kendra Scott and David Yurman are among her favorite brands; both pair flawlessly with her everyday ensemble of boyfriend jeans, neutral-colored tees, and Tory Burch sandals. And filling her closet with classic statement pieces – little black dresses, great blue jeans, a timeless denim jacket – serves as a cue to keep things simple. “Whenever something trendy comes up, I always remind myself to be ‘a little less Kim [Kardashian] and a little more Kate [Middleton],’” Edgar concedes. “It keeps me from going overboard!”

What was your most recent extravagance? Remodeling my condo and giving it a fresh new look. What is the greatest love in your life? My Yorkie-Poo BOO-bear! Six pounds of pure love and joy. Do patients comment on your style choices? My patients always compliment me on my earrings and nail polish. But it’s not always about what you’re wearing. How you make a patient feel is what they’ll remember you by.

PGA Tour golfer Ricky Barnes shares his commitment to helping the physical and mental well-being of today’s youth

Whether he’s hitting the golf course on the PGA Tour or heading up the golf tournament for the Ricky & Suzanne Barnes Foundation, Valley resident Ricky Barnes is the kind of athlete that puts forethought and hard work into everything he does. Barnes’ father, Bruce Barnes, was a punter who played in the NFL for the New England Patriots and also enjoyed golf. Growing up, young Barnes was exposed to golf and its atmosphere. “My dad and all his buddies used to play a course in Northern California in Stockton. I liked the camaraderie, [though] it was just another sport, considering that my brother and I played just about every sport,” Barnes says. “Where golf really got me was probably the first time I was able to shoot under par from the back tees. Then it kind of clicked!” At that point, Barnes realized that he wouldn’t need to rely on a team member to play golf, and he could excel individually in the sport. Barnes earned four-time All-American honors at the University of Arizona. He kicked off his golf career with flying colors by winning the prestigious Ben Hogan Award, which is given to the nation’s top collegiate golfer annually. He was the U.S. Amateur Champion in 2002 and soon turned professional in 2003, joining the Nationwide Tour in 2004. He landed the 25th spot during the 2008 Nationwide Tour money list, which, in turn, earned him his PGA Tour card for 2009. During the 2009 PGA Tour, Barnes tied for second in an impressive finish at the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black.

48

So Scottsdale! February ‘18

Even with this success, the golf pro – who is also a Tommy Bahama ambassador – says he does have some golf goals for 2018. “I’m still trying to go out there and win. I have yet to win an individual PGA Tour event, and I think that’s kind of the pinnacle of where you want to be,” says Barnes, who, at press time, was not yet confirmed for this month’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. “I’ve succeeded in the sense that I’ve finished second or third or shot 65 on the final round to move from 30th place to eighth. Still, when you leave a tournament and you haven’t won, there is still something inside of you, even if you finish second, that isn’t completely gratified.” Barnes, who has lived in the Valley for about 20 years, is married to pro beach volleyball player and University of NevadaReno alumna, Suzanne Barnes (nee Stonebarger). They live on the Phoenix/Scottsdale border with their two children, ages four and six. “I chose and love Scottsdale because of the year-round weather, and I feel it’s a great place to travel in and out of and raise my family,” Barnes says. “It is still close enough to lots of family in California, and there are lots of great golf courses and facilities to practice and play as well as restaurants and pro sports teams, as I love sports. All of those factors add up to being such a great place and city to live in.” And Barnes admits he does have some favorite Arizona courses. “I enjoy playing a little bit of desert golf, but we are also

members of Phoenix Country Club. I really still enjoy feeling like I’m in California or somewhere with trees, instead of playing near gravel and desert areas,” he says. “We’re spoiled around here and we’ve got a good mix of golf courses. I’ve always enjoyed playing TPC and Whisper Rock up north and the Phoenix Country Club.”

HELPING YOUTH With a passion for empowering younger generations, especially those in his hometown, the Ricky & Suzanne Barnes Foundation was founded in 2012 and benefits organizations that promote the physical and mental well-being of children while encouraging

involvement in sports. When the couple was initially talking about starting a foundation, the cause was clear from the beginning. “We both wanted to give back,” Barnes says. “We wanted to get the kids from where we grew up interested in sports. We both are, what we feel, healthy athletes. If you can engrave that in kids’ minds early enough and often, I think that’s where we can keep them from getting into trouble early.” Barnes continues, “Sports are the best outlet for kids, which also transitions into less time for other things to happen or possibly getting involved in other unhealthy things. You wake up and you go to school. When you’re done with school, you go play your sport. When you’re done playing your sport, you eat dinner and you’re so tired you don’t want to do anything else but go to bed.” The foundation’s flagship fundraiser is the annual Ricky Barnes Charity Pro-Am tournament that takes place each October at the Stockton Golf & Country Club in Stockton, California, where Ricky and Suzanne were raised and where their parents live. “I am able to get 12 to 15 other PGA Tour pros to golf and that is our main fundraiser,” Barnes says. “From there, we see how much money we are able to raise, and then we pick out three or four main beneficiaries for those funds. We try to add one new beneficiary every year.” Certain schools, the homeless shelter in Stockton, or youth programs become the recipients of sports equipment, courtesy of Wilson, a sports company that has allowed the Ricky & Suzanne Barnes Foundation to purchase that equipment at a discount. “Our biggest beneficiary is the First Tee of San Joaquin Valley, where I’m an ambassador,” says Barnes, noting that since the foundation has been involved, the youth organization has quintupled in size in terms participation and coaches. Some of the other recipients of the foundation’s generosity include One.tlc School for Homeless Children in Stockton, California; public schools; and the Morgan Amelia Foundation, which supports children who are living with a particularly catastrophic form of epilepsy. Barnes also gives back to various local elementary schools. “Pretty much every component serves youth,” Barnes says. “Like our mission statement says, it’s all to help the health and mental well-being of kids. Mostly, that leads to underprivileged kids who need an outlet and don’t have the resources right in front of them to keep them out of trouble.” Barnes continues, “Every year we get letters, notes and emails about how we’ve affected kids’ lives, usually from First Tee. We also get letters from kids at One.tlc, and they’ll draw us pictures and tell us how they’ve used the money.” The foundation has donated more than $650,000 since it started in 2012. “This has been really rewarding. [When] we hand out the checks, it’s then that we actually get the gratification from putting in all the hours of raising money, reaching out to people, and people making donations.” Together, the Barnes have a long-term goal for their foundation. “We want to continue to grow each year and continue to make a difference in the community where we grew up and where we live now. We will hopefully cross the $1 million mark this year in charitable donations, something that Suzanne and I are very proud of.”

Truly Using Beauty for Good Anyone can write a check and send it off to a charitable organization. In return, they get a short-lived “I did a good deed” feeling and a tax deduction. This is enough for some. But for more than 20 years, Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery has been impacting our community through service to patients and personal giving to various local charities by doctors Ali Mosharrafa and Tamir Mosharrafa, brothers and plastic surgeons. They had a desire to do more than write a check to support local nonprofit organizations who are doing tremendous work in the Valley. “In our medical practice, over the span of our careers, we can and will do a lot of good, and that will impact the lives of our patients who walk through our doors,” says Dr. Tamir Mosharrafa. “Through Beauty for Good, we are able to reach countless people and impact many more lives beyond our patients. One day, these doors will close, and we will no longer perform lifechanging cosmetic and breast reconstruction surgeries. But through our foundation, we have an opportunity to build a legacy that will continue to reach many.” In 2015, the doctors co-founded The Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery Foundation (dba Beauty for Good), a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Beauty for Good’s mission is “to help beautiful changes in individuals inspire beautiful changes in our community.” Their goal is to bring awareness to and support causes in the Valley that are close to them – causes they believe in. Dr. Ali Mosharrafa is the chairman of the advisory board for Prevent Child Abuse Arizona, and Dr. Tamir Mosharrafa has given his time and talents removing branding from human trafficking victims for The Phoenix Dream Center. Kara Schell, managing director of Beauty for Good, has volunteered many hours for the charities that they support and is part of a mentoring group with Fresh Start Women’s Foundation. They truly have a personal, hands-on approach to their support of local nonprofits. “Being involved is more than writing a check. We choose our charitable partners carefully, and we commit to be a true partner, not just a sponsor to their cause,” Kara says. “Many small nonprofit organizations are unheard of, and the work they are doing could make a significant impact with more resources and support from Valley residents and businesses. We help those organizations showcase their mission in many ways through Beauty for Good by providing monetary gifts and hosting events to bring awareness to our charitable partners.” Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery is preparing to host the Second Annual Beauty for Good Gala at the Arizona Biltmore on Saturday, April 14, 2018. The gala will benefit five local charities and is co-hosted by emcee Olivia Fierro, Good Morning Arizona news anchor. You can learn more, support the cause, and purchase your tickets by visiting www.beautyforgood.org.

A2ndAct.Org – A2ndAct. org was founded by breast cancer survivor Judy Martens. Judy has an unwavering belief in two things: one, valuable lessons can come out of all journeys, even the difficult ones. And two, we all owe a payback to humanity. While recovering and preparing for “life after cancer” she found herself asking, “I have beat cancer, now what?” The question was no longer “Why me?” but, rather, “What next?” This was a common question in the survivor community. A2ndAct. org provides many resources and support for women asking themselves that very question, women who have beaten cancer and are now creating their own “Second Act” in life. A2ndAct.org provides workshops and support groups that allow survivors to find strength in healing each other and giving back. It also provides microgrants to women who are starting a new venture in life, their own “Second Act.” To learn more about the impact that A2ndAct. Org is making in our community, visit www.a2ndact.org.

Pearce Family Foundation (PFF) – The Pearce Family Foundation is committed to being the bridge between the hospital and the home. They are devoted to giving back to families in their community by making a positive impact everyday. PFF was founded by Meghan Pearce Alfonso, whose mantra is “Service to others is how you pay for your room here on earth.” She feels that it is important to help those in need, which is how PFF was born. The foundation’s main initiative is Angels Around Us, which helps families get back on their feet by providing grants of monetary support for the home, so parents can focus on their child’s journey to get well without the worry of losing their homes or utilities – since care costs can consume financial resources that would otherwise go toward rent or electricity. The foundation’s newest initiative, Angel Pups, helps pay for a service dog for children in need of one. To learn more about PFF, visit www.pearcefamilyfoundation.com.

Phoenix Dream Center – The Dream Center started with one goal: “To find a need and fill it, to find a hurt and heal it.” From housing 60 people and outreach services for 500 in the streets with food, they grew to providing housing to over 450 each night and reaching 36,000 in the community. They provide resources for many, from a simple hot meal and a pillow at night for the homeless to supporting young adults who have aged out of the foster care system and now have nowhere to turn to women who have been pulled into human trafficking by choice and force. They provide invaluable services to our community, including medical care and education. Their efforts in providing rehabilitation services to human trafficking victims is supported by Beauty for Good fundraising and awareness campaigns. Programs are designed to give women a safe place and show them their value to our community. To learn about The Phoenix Dream Center, visit www.phxdreamcenter.org.

Prevent Child Abuse Arizona (PCAAZ) – Prevent Child Abuse Arizona is shifting the public conversation about child maltreatment so that prevention is the priority, finding ways to prevent child abuse and neglect before it happens. PCAAZ provides training, parenting education and prevention services to families, foster parents, child welfare professionals, social service providers, law enforcement, court personnel, and the public. PCAAZ has been the state’s leading child maltreatment prevention organization for more than 25 years. Through programs, advocacy and training, PCAAZ implements strategies to keep children safe and support families in our communities. The PCAAZ family of programs are designed to promote child well-being, strengthen families, and prevent child maltreatment. Research confirms that providing education and support to parents prior to or just after birth of a child is the most effective prevention strategy. To learn more about PCAAZ, visit www.pcaaz.org.

Breast Reconstruction Awareness Campaign (BRA) – Breast reconstruction following a mastectomy or lumpectomy is not for every woman, but every woman should be informed of the options to which she is entitled. In this spirit, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF) lead the Breast Reconstruction Awareness USA Campaign, one of the few breast cancer campaigns dedicated to building awareness around breast reconstruction. The Breast Reconstruction Awareness Fund supports research focusing on breast reconstruction and provides financial assistance to uninsured or under-insured women seeking breast reconstruction following a lumpectomy or mastectomy. We believe that education is key to awareness, most women are not education on options available to them on their journey to become whole again post mastectomy following breast cancer treatment. FIERCE. FABULOUS. FEMALE. February is the month for all things love and lovely, including seven fabulous women you need to know about – at least, if you’re a single male looking for your special someone. While we usually feature both men and women, this year we decided to change things up. Even with a tight deadline, demanding careers and busy lives, they were able to multitask – as women so masterfully do – to be part of this. And, above all, they were willing to share themselves, their hopes and their dreams for the future. Now, that is powerful. Here’s to the ladies.

Age: 27 How would you describe yourself? I’m an active, family-oriented Arizona native who overuses the cry-laughing emoji and is easily won over by dark chocolate. As an avid lover of aerial fitness and flexibility training, you are more likely to find me upside down than rightside up! I live by the Dalai Lama quote, “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” Giving back through the local nonprofit Care Fund makes my heart feel full. What do you love? I love the smell of rain, Sunday brunch with friends, conquering a hike, giving unexpected compliments, Hulu marathons in my new unicorn onesie, warm chocolate chip cookies, feeling butterflies on a date, putting your phone away at dinner, exploring new cities, and a good challenge. What do you dislike? People who bite into string cheese. Where’s the fun in that? Describe your ideal date. I love to laugh, so it would be fun to go to a comedy show or maybe just to dinner if my date thinks he’s up for the challenge with some jokes! What are you looking for in a significant other? I am a planner and always on the go, so I’m looking for someone who can keep up with a busy lifestyle but appreciates a relaxing vacation or cooking dinner at home and isn’t afraid to remind me to stop and smell the roses. Celebrity crush: I love a man with dance moves, so it’s a definite toss-up between Channing Tatum and Stephen “tWitch” Boss! Dating deal-breakers: Lack of chemistry. I keep an open mind with people and believe in compromise, but you can’t force a connection or those dating butterflies! My ideal partner is … motivated, communicative and affectionate. Favorite restaurants: My go-to spots are Sushiholic, Ingo’s Tasty Food, Malee’s Thai Bistro and Olive & Ivy. If you haven’t tried the bottomless brunch at SumoMaya, it’s the bestkept secret in town (well, until now). The food just keeps coming!

Age: 25 How would you describe yourself? I’m a fun, loving, energetic gal originally from Rhode Island. I moved to Arizona three years ago and have been living my life to the fullest working as an event producer. If I’m not producing some of Arizona’s most exciting events, you can find me in Old Town Scottsdale playing giant Jenga with a mimosa in my hand! What do you love? I love spontaneous adventures, the beach, brunching, the sound of rain, reading a great book on my patio with a cup of coffee, and watching The Bachelor/ Bachelorette with my girlfriends every Monday. What do you dislike? I don’t like mustard, pickles, spiders, roller coasters, and avocados (but if you’re lucky, I’ll get them on the side for you!). Describe your ideal date. Grabbing dinner with an amazing view and a nice big glass of red wine, followed by churros for dessert. What are you looking for in a significant other? A simple guy who likes to travel, makes me laugh, and is able to handle me when I’m hangry. Celebrity crush: Thomas Rhett. How could you not love him after seeing the music video for Die a Happy Man?! Dating deal-breakers: A smoker is a major turn off. Also, someone who is too smothering in the beginning of a relationship; everyone needs their personal space here and there! My ideal partner is … funny, adventurous and ambitious. Favorite restaurants: There is nothing better than a farm burrito at Morning Glory Cafe after a hike on South Mountain. I also love AZ88 for their chicken sandwich, waffle fries and contemporary atmosphere. Most prized possession: After my dad passed away, I kept his Bruce Springsteen concert T-shirts to remember the fun times we had jamming out around town in his 1987 Corvette with the top down.

It brings me so much joy to share the stories of our Arizona entrepreneurs and give them the attention they deserve. What do you dislike? Internet trolls and bad attitudes. Describe your ideal date. I love a man with a plan – and maybe even reservations! I’m a good planner so I find it very special when someone else takes the lead on how to spend the evening. What are you looking for in a significant other? A faith-based man of integrity. He must be kind, a good decision-maker and have a love for travel. Mandatory: Must laugh at my jokes ... sometimes they flop and I need backup! Celebrity crush: Patrick Dempsey. Then and now. Dating deal-breakers: A man who’s bad with numbers. (I never want to calculate the tip again!) My ideal partner is … a good man. Favorite restaurants: I have a soft spot for a patio with twinkling lights and live music. View of Camelback Mountain, too? Sold! Most prized possession: My experiences – past, present and to come!

As an auto journalist, my ideal date is a fun evening at Bondurant Racing School and burning rubber on the race track. What are you looking for in a significant other? I live for immersive travel, late nights laughing with dear friends, and recipes involving chocolate. By day, I work for the Arizona Diamondbacks at the intersection of public and government affairs and baseball. What do you love? Hosting dinner parties. An early morning on Camelback Mountain. George Strait. Lux’s chocolate chip cookies. Spending time in London, Mexico City or Hvar. Playing polo with the Arizona Polo Club. What do you dislike? Name dropping. Describe your ideal date. Surprise me! What are you looking for? Someone who is ambitious but understands that there is more to life than work. Not afraid to take the lead, loves adventure, and appreciates the finer things in life but also doesn’t mind ordering in pizza and watching a movie. Celebrity crush: I don’t have one! Dating deal-breakers: Drug use, excessive drinking and smoking are all not hot. My ideal partner is … fun, intelligent and honest. Favorite restaurants: Dieci, Ocotillo, Virtù, True Food Kitchen, St. Francis and Kaleidoscope Juice. Most prized possession: My custom Carrara marble coffee table. A dear friend of my rabbi’s gave the marble to me, and I designed the base. I love how personal the piece is. I also have a vintage Wassily Chair that I would probably grab in the event of a fire before anything else (marble is heavy!). So, can I have two?

Brandy Wells Vice President of External Affairs at the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry

Age: 33 How would you describe yourself? I’m a science nerd at heart, eager to talk about natural history, bioscience and astronomy. Sometimes my sense of humor gets me into trouble. I say what I’m thinking. I love political activism and get deep satisfaction from long drives on wide open roads with loud music. What do you love? I like long conversations about Jurassic Park, philosophy and current events. I admire avocados. I appreciate sarcasm and enjoy good-natured, intellectual sparring. I love reading books and listening to podcasts in the sunshine. What do you dislike? For hundreds of years human civilization thrived in spite of dirty shopping carts. Describe your ideal date. My ideal date would be a trip back in geologic time roughly 540 million years ago to explore earth after the Cambrian Explosion. Or maybe just a trip to Disney World for a week to hang out in Frontierland. What are you looking for in a significant other? I’m often drawn to deep thinkers with beards. But I don’t want to list a bunch of subjective qualities, so I’ll be specific: An Arizona man with whom I have chemistry. Celebrity crush: Oh gosh, Nicolas Cage in the ’90s still makes me swoon. Now, it’s most certainly the looks of Bradley Cooper and Joaquin Phoenix. Dating deal-breakers: I go to a lot of events and functions, and if he won’t go with me, we won’t work. If he doesn’t like dogs, is he even a good person? My ideal partner is … reliable, strong and funny. Favorite restaurants: I can’t get enough of Casa Añejo (those guacamole choices!) and The Parlor Pizzeria. And weekend mornings are for the Breakfast Club or Chelsea’s Kitchen. Most prized possession: A little chug (pug-Chihuahua mix) named Kanga after his kangaroo-like bouncing abilities. Cavalia’s enchanting Odysseo gallops into Scottsdale

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY DAN HARPER

Opening under the massive “white big top” off of Loop 202 and McClintock Drive on Feb. 21, Odysseo is Cavalia’s newest awe-inspiring production, where equestrian arts meets imaginative theatrics. Throughout the last few years, the $30 million production has grown in size and scope without losing its soul. The sprawling touring venue – which reaches more than three stories high – will set the stage for the show, featuring more than 65 horses and 52 artists comprised of extraordinary equestrian riders, acrobats, aerialists, dancers, and musicians. During the breathtaking production, audience members are taken on a journey that connects the harmony between horses and humans to a forest, a savanna, a desert, and an ice cave. Cavalia’s creator, Normand Latourelle, says, “This show is a poem for the eyes and the ears.” With the help of the four-legged synchronized stars of the show, the setting recreates outdoor elements, allowing the horses and artists the freedom to display their collaboration unlike anything seen across the world today. Performers deify the liberty, power and majesty represented by horses while exploring the unique relationship between horse and man. With the addition of more horses and artists than ever before, Odysseo’s acrobats push the limits of live entertainment even further as they interact with the horses

and the audience. Meanwhile, live musicians and vocalists immerse audiences in an enchanting, unforgettable multi-sensory experience. Odysseo’s mind-blowing theatrical effects are as spectacular as they are numerous, and they include a state-of-the art projection screen which is three times the size of the world’s largest movie screen, a life-size merry-go-round, and a tangible lake made of 40,000 gallons of recycled water. For a memorable evening, the RendezVous package will offer the best seats in the house, exquisite buffet dining before the show, an open bar, desserts during intermission, and an exclusive visit of the stables after the show.

Youthful attractions turned grown-up playgrounds after dark Just because an attraction is meant for kids doesn’t mean it’s only for kids. Several seemingly “kid-focused” venues work hard to put on special events, programs and even exhibitions with a more mature crowd in mind. Bar 1936 Among the most famous views in the Valley is certainly Camelback Mountain. And among the most romantic ways to enjoy the view day or night is from the patio at Bar 1936, located at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn. Lit by fire pits and strategically set twinkle lights, the patio is not only romantic, but upscale-rustic and uniquely Arizona. www.camelbackinn.com. Dominick’s Steakhouse Certainly, the steakhouse itself is the epitome of romance any night of the year. But, after dinner, slink over to the nearly hidden lounge area, which is tucked behind the massive formal bar area, before heading home. It’s not only intimate with seating for less than 60 people, the floorto-ceiling glass wine cellar provides the sexiest of backdrops. www.dominickssteakhouse.com. Isabella’s Kitchen Isabella’s offers 180-degree views of Camelback and Mummy mountains and is planted right on the 18th hole of Grayhawk Golf Club with greenery as far as the eye can see. After sunset, strings of twinkling lights dot the night sky, and the patio offers fire pits, picnic tables, couches, rocking chairs and even bar seating both indoors and out. www.isabellaskitchen.com. LON’s at The Hermosa Inn Nestled in the heart of Paradise Valley, the iconic outdoor patio at LON’s is notably considered one the Valley’s most romantic. It’s flanked by lush, colorful gardens, towering trees with sparkling lights, a large trickling water fountain, and five outdoor fireplaces with intimate enclaves and cozy conversational couches, perfect for sipping a craft cocktail. www.lons.com. Onyx Bar & Lounge Located by Talavera at the Four Seasons Resort, Onyx Bar & Lounge is romantic indoors and out. Inside, the lounge’s centerpiece is its actual bar, which is custom-made out of a mesquite tree bursting with amber ribbons. Outside, on the 1,000-square-foot elevated patio, there are unobstructed desert and city views as far as the eye can see and live music on weekends. www.talaverarestaurant.com/onyx. Saguaro Restaurant Located inside the boutique hotel of the same name, this vibrantly colored patio with a massive fireplace (totally made for cuddling up next to) has become such a popular hidden date gem, it recently launched a “Desert Nights” specialty menu featuring spiked hot chocolate, mulled wine, apple cider and small bites to share with someone special. It’s available nightly until 10 p.m. www.thesaguaro.com. Second Story Restaurant & Liquor Bar A dreamy escape, Second Story is perched above Scottsdale Road and 3rd Avenue, hidden away from the bustle of the scene below. WHIMSICAL ARTISTRY Geoffrey Gersten transforms pop culture into fine art

BY OFELIA MONTELONGO

Located in Downtown Scottsdale, Gersten Fine Art Gallery is far from your average gallery. Geoffrey Gersten, a painter and the gallery’s owner, opened Gersten Fine Art two years ago along Main Street with the objective to show new work beyond some of the traditional art usually found in the Scottsdale Arts District. Born and raised in Scottsdale, Gersten recalls walking through the galleries during his teenage years, eventually starting to paint his own works at 21 years old. Though many galleries praised his whimsical, surreal work, they wouldn’t take the risk to represent him. It was then that Gersten decided to open his own place. Now, together with his wife, Amelia (a fine art photographer), he runs Gersten Fine Art Gallery. It’s here that art aficionados and appreciators can have a chance to talk directly to the artist about his ideas and inspirations. The self-taught artist was originally inspired by the Dutch masters, including Rembrandt, and he’s driven by classical beauty. Some of his artistic influences also include Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and the new movement of high-end “lowbrow” art. Gersten now specializes in surreal oil paintings blended with pop culture motifs, such as wide-eyed caricature-like animals and robots. You’ll also find the unexpected in his paintings – a cat posing like Mona Lisa or the Mario Brothers inside Salvador Dalí’s world. “[The paintings] form a link between subculture art styles and the finer world of classical art history and exceptional technique,” Gersten says. Gersten works with oil paint, mostly on canvas and sometimes on antique wood. “When I get an idea, sometimes it’s just something that appears in my mind and I seek out reference material to make it happen,” he says. “The ideas usually come to me, and, luckily, I don’t have to spend time seeking them out.” He notes that he always begins by making a preliminary drawing, followed by blocking in the main colors. “Many layers of glazing later, I add the final details on top of the major forms.” Besides Gersten’s unconventional paintings – often full of symbolism – art lovers can find modern photography followed by imaginative welded sculptures in the gallery. Gersten’s work has been exhibited worldwide, including solo shows in Taiwan, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and around the Valley. This year, he’ll have a solo show in LA, followed by a major mural at Tivoli Village in Las Vegas and a solo show at La Fiambrera Art Gallery in Madrid, Spain. Gallery hours are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m., though you can call for an appointment from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. any day of the week. Gersten Fine Art Gallery, 7008 E. EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

With over 30 years of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgical experience, Dr Wolin and his staff not only Talk the Talk… they also Walk the Walk. Listen to what his patients have to say about their care and surgical results… (Verified independent interview) Just a few months ago I got a good closeup view of my lips in the mirror. I was horrified. How could I possibly have gotten so many wrinkles in not only my lips but also in the areas surrounding my mouth? I never even smoked cigarettes..I immediately decided that I would try and remedy the situation. I went to a local spa where I was told that a temporary filler combined with a skin peel would solve my problems. After undergoing multiple injections and peels, it was evident that the solution to my problem was not in a little jar of magical potions nor in a minuscule injection of temporary filler. The problem could only be solved by a combination of permanent volumizing as well as resurfacing my skin. I had heard of Dr Wolin and his ability to use Fat Transfer techniques and Laser to re-volumize and smooth the wrinkles around the mouth and the face. He has been doing this procedure for the past 20 years and has hundreds of happy patients. With just a 45 minute procedure under local anesthetic, I was able to reclaim my lips and the entire area around my mouth.. My results were fantastic…natural and permanent.

My amazing story on video can be seen on Channel 3 TV, Caring for Arizona, by going to Dr Wolin’s website at awolin.com/fat. Get a first hand look at how technology, when used by highly trained Board Certified Plastic Surgeons, can change your life...

Flowers are a token of love, and if your love is long-lasting, don’t you think that token should be, too? Made in Los Angeles, The Million Roses collection specializes in (somewhat) forever florals. Roses are preserved by hand using a delicate technique that allows them to retain their natural appearance and feel, as if they were fresh-cut flowers. Delivered in a handcrafted box (with your choice of gold, silver, white, pink or black), the flowers will last one to three years, perhaps even longer. Even better, they don’t need to be watered. There are a range of sizes, colors and patterns – from a solid display to an alternating blend – though the large Million Eternity box (pictured) features 80 to 90 roses, with the center lovingly shaped into a heart. Pricing varies; display shown is $649 plus shipping. www.themillionroses.us. So Scottsdale! February ‘18

2018 JEEP WRANGLER The beloved auto debuts a redesign for the first time in 11 years BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $26,995

Jeep Wrangler may be the most recognizable vehicle in the world. As such, when a new Wrangler is introduced, it’s a big deal not only for the company but also for the millions of Jeep owners around the world. A redesign happens only about every 10 years, and great care is taken to respect the brand’s history and legacy. For 2018, the time for a redo has arrived. Jeep loyalists will be pleased to know that the new Wrangler is an absolute home run, the best in the brand’s 75-plus-year history. Its off-road capabilities boggle the mind, and its on-road manners are significantly improved. Much is familiar, but better. All trim levels – Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon – come standard with a removable soft top and are available with two or four doors (Sahara is four-door only). Previously, removing the top was labor intensive, and reinstalling it was madly frustrating. The all-new Sunrider soft top takes less than four minutes to fold. Same goes for the folding windshield, and a new head bar keeps the rearview mirror in place. Replacing the zippered side windows is a new, easy-to-use, slide-in configuration. An optional Sky One-Touch power top (available

104

on Sahara and Rubicon four-doors) retracts with the push of a button. Driving the new Wrangler about 40 miles on paved roads, I immediately noticed the improved ride. Steering is much more precise thanks to the electro-hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering system, a new and welcome standard for Jeep. And, the new model improves on Wrangler’s already world-class off-road capability. Approach, departure and breakover angles are better, minimizing undercarriage scraping during off-roading. Ground clearance is up across the board, and the Wrangler can ford up to 30 inches of water. Visually, the new Wrangler pays tribute to Jeep’s design heritage. The legendary seven-slot grill has been updated, with the outer slats intersecting the headlights. The interior recaptures the original Jeep’s “horizontality;” round gauges and air vents are simply aligned. A 5- (standard), 7- or 8.4-inch touchscreen houses the Uconnect system; the latter two have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s a perfect blend of old and new. The improvements to the 2018 Wrangler render the previous generation practically ancient by comparison. I expect it to fly off dealer lots.

Price as tested: $53,110 Engine: 3.6-liter V-6 Horsepower: 285 Fuel economy: 18/23 mpg city/highway Seating: 5 Fab features: Variety of new engine options Improved on-road ride and handling Enhanced world-class off-road capabilities

You’re just catching your breath after the holiday season and somehow it’s already time to plan the perfect day for your valentine. With pressure to buy an amazing gift, set the reservation and turn up the romance, there’s no wonder why people get lost in the work and forget to genuinely enjoy Valentine’s Day. This year, Drs. John Robinson and Cristina Bosch—aka the Sex Docs—want you to forget all the unnecessary stress and get back to basics. All it takes to get the love hormones flowing this year is using sweet treats and your body’s natural responses to get in the mood for a day of love and appreciation with your partner.

Treat Your Sweetheart to a Luxury Chocolatier

Valentine's Day is all about indulgence in a day of love, luxury and the treats that come with them. Although it’s easy to settle for an all-or-nothing mentality, our bodies and souls get more out of life when we enjoy our goodies in moderation. In fact, eating one to three ounces of high-quality dark chocolate not only satisfies our cravings faster (good news for those of us on a weight-loss journey), it also offers great health benefits. With high levels of magnesium and phenylethylamine (PEA), this treat lowers stress, boosts our energy and increases the flow of feel-good hormones like oxytocin, aka the Love Hormone. Add its properties as a natural aphrodisiac and

it’s obvious why chocolate has become such a romantic go-to. Visit a luxury chocolatier for a tasting for two or order custom truffles to-go as a surprise for a sexy night in.

Get Drunk on Love

We love raising a glass to each other, but alcohol doesn’t fit into everyone’s fitness goals. Another delectable way to shake things up on date night is to mix a sidebar of healthy cocktails, tonics and superfoods into your festivities. Top off pomegranate juice and sparkling water with blueberries for a delicious drink that stimulates your senses in all the right ways, waking you up and kick-starting your libido. Botanical ingredients like rosemary, jasmine or chile pepper add a sensuous element to any drink recipe. Mocktails are a great way to stay hydrated throughout a night of celebration, and can even prevent hangovers and stamina issues in the bedroom. Mix up a few pitchers to sip all night or alternate between other cocktails for a tasty and low-maintenance way to up the ante on a romantic evening.

Stay Sexy Year-Round

Even though Valentine’s Day only comes once a year, focusing on you and your partner shouldn’t stop there. Investing in our health allows us to meet unique, long-term needs that positively affect our relationships. One aspect of our health that’s central to a successful relationship is our hormone levels. As these numbers decrease with age, so do our energy, desire and libido. Rather than letting the flame go out, use this holiday to learn how you can take tangible steps to meet your emotional and physical needs with a visit to the Hormone Zone. With options like the O-Shot™, P-Shot™ and Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, the Sex Docs help patients to foster satisfying, fulfilling relationships well after the holidays. These therapies provide our bodies with necessary supplements to improve sexual performance and breathe new life into our relationships. Want to learn more? UP, UP AND AWAY Fly high (and in style) with Float Balloon Tours

BY CHELSEA YOUNG / PHOTO BY MARC MINTZ

For many people, a hot air balloon ride is one of those bucket list adventures. It’s also the perfect way to add some flair to the new year (or a hot Valentine’s Day date) with an undeniable feeling of exhilaration. Phoenix-based Float Balloon Tours is in the business of just that – offering adventure and thrills with a breathtaking dose of sky-high views, as well as a rare perspective of the landscape below. “Our biggest goal is to create a more iconic flight,” says Preston Lindsey, Float Balloon Tours’ director of operations, noting that they seek to give riders a glimpse of nature (rather than city views). To do this, balloon rides head out over the North Phoenix desert and even near Lake Pleasant, which means, of course, plenty of photo ops. Float Balloon Tours offers daily sunrise flights (which take off just after sunrise) throughout the entire year, while sunset flights (which take off a few hours before sunset) are offered daily from November to March. Balloons are operated by two or three crew members plus FAA-certified commercial pilots.

106

So Scottsdale! February ‘18

The balloons themselves are certified to carry two, 10 and 15 passengers, though larger groups can fly in multiple balloons. Perhaps the most unique aspect is the addition of a gourmet culinary experience. No matter what time of day you fly, you’ll receive pre-flight cookies and locally roasted coffee from Cartel Coffee Lab (lemonade before the sunset ride), a post-flight sparkling craft cocktail demo and toast, and a three-course sunrise brunch or sunset dinner – served right where the balloon lands. Partnering with local food purveyors and wineries, Float Balloon Tours serves seasonal, locally sourced meals prepared tableside in the out-of-doors and curated by the executive chef of Cloth & Flame (www. clothandflame.com), which is also operated by the same owners. The sentiment behind this – to support and share all things local and invite the uniqueness of the Southwest into each experience to engage all the senses – is at the heart of each ride. Even more unique is a private balloon charter, which offers an intimate flight for special occasions. It includes all the bells and whistles, plus a customized experience (just talk to the staff for ideas!) for whatever you’re celebrating, be that a birthday or a proposal. Though balloons are typically airborne for up to 1.5 hours, the whole experience – from arrival to the meal – will last about four hours. Bonus: a professional photographer is part of the whole package for the duration of each tour and can even be scheduled for a mini photo shoot with a private charter. Starting prices are $185 (sunrise), $205 (sunset) and $950 (private). Float Balloon Tours will also offer readers a special discount. Simply mention So Scottsdale! to receive $10 off the purchase of bookings for morning or afternoon flights. For more information and bookings, call 480.256.8695 or visit www.floatballoontours.com.

MEET ME IN MONTEREY Wine, whales and wonder await in Northern California

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Less than a two-hour flight from the Valley, Northern California’s Monterey County boasts the gorgeous locales of Carmel, Pebble Beach, Big Sur and, of course, Monterey Bay. With a fraction of the crowds that descend on the area in the late spring and summer months, this time of year marks the sneaky best time to visit. Here is our handy guide on where to stay and what to do all season long, and you can find even more information at www.seemonterey.com.

Stay Inn at Spanish Bay If there is a golfer in the family, this resort needs no introduction. The Inn at Spanish Bay is situated on the historic, iconic Pebble Beach (and its golf course), which is on the western edge of the Monterey Peninsula along the Pacific Ocean. A blend of old-world charm and luxury, the resort has newly renovated rooms and suites with cozy fireplaces, a sophisticated design and unrivaled views of the course, ocean and surrounding forest. With first class always in focus, the resort offers complimentary Lexus test drives to guests as well as five award-wining dining destinations, nightly bagpipers who “put the golf course to sleep” at dusk, and even its own wine cellar experience with more than 250 bottles by the taste, glass and bottle. Carmel Valley Ranch Upon arrival at the newly renovated Carmel Valley Ranch, it’s impossible not to drink in the heady fragrance of fresh lavender growing on the nearby hillside. In addition to the sheer beauty of this family-friendly resort, because of its location, the climate tends to be a lot warmer, sunnier and less foggy than the coast – especially during winter months. In addition to being one of the top resort destinations in the U.S. (opt for a lavender suite, by the way) they have one of the most unique on-site activities you’ll find anywhere: A bee experience, which puts you in a beekeeper suit for the buzziest adventure in the area.

Play Carmel Valley Wine Tasting The Carmel Valley Wine region is among the most beloved in the world, and for good reason. Many of the area’s award-winning wineries – including Bernardus Winery, Holman Ranch Vineyards, Cima Collina Winery and Joullian Vineyards – are within walking distance of each other and focused on giving guests personal interactions versus simply tasting and selling wines day in and day

CELEBRATE OUR STATE Spotted Donkey Cantina’s 1912 pays spirited homage to Arizona’s anniversary

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH BARRY

Did you know that Feb. 14 is more than just Valentine’s Day in Arizona? On February 14, 1912, we became a state! “We wanted to celebrate our statehood by creating a drink that celebrates the flavors that we think make this region so special,” says Scott Peterson, the liquid chef for the Spotted Donkey Cantina at the Boulders Resort & Spa. The resulting cocktail, fittingly named 1912 ($16), celebrates all that grows wild and tastes delicious in the Southwest. “We knew if we wanted to showcase the Southwest, it had to have tequila, famously made from blue agave in Mexico,” Peterson says. “We use Herradura Double Barrel Reposado, which is aged after distillation in American oak barrels for 11 months to allow flavor maturation.” Spotted Donkey’s Herradura is even more special, as it comes from a barrel his team hand-selected in Mexico for the resort’s exclusive use. “While there, we noticed fields of lavender growing wild around the agave,” says Peterson, who plays on this natural connection by making his own lavender syrup infused with macerated celery to pair with the tequila, amping up the spirit’s subtle sweet, herbal notes in the process. Peterson then squeezes two tangerines into the shaker with the other ingredients, directly infusing one of Arizona’s famous “Five Cs” (citrus) into the cocktail. He pours the contents over a laser-cut artisanal ice cube in a vintage rocks glass, then finishes it with a splash of club soda for balance. Garnished with fresh lavender, the 1912 is a bright, refreshing homage fitting of the Grand Canyon State. Spotted Donkey Cantina, 34505 N. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Siegfried Hohaus

Siegfried Hohaus serves as the regional executive chef of Mastro’s Ocean Club, overseeing the masterfully crafted surf-and-turf menu that has earned national acclaim a dozen or more times over.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Is that an accent we hear? Guilty as charged. I am originally from a small town in Bavaria, Germany, called Zellingen. Did you always know you wanted to be a chef? I really did. It all started in the kitchen with my mother, who I loved to help cook, especially when we made her famous potato dumplings together. By age 14, I started working in my first kitchen. Tell us about your journey to America. After my first few kitchens, I apprenticed at Hotel Excelsior, a luxury resort in Croatia that also happens to be where I met my wife. After completing training, I began a career with Hilton International, which would take me to Switzerland, England, New York and Indonesia. A special highlight from those days – serving as executive sous chef for the restaurant atop the World Trade Center. What about your journey to Arizona and Ocean Club? My wife and I moved to Arizona in 1990 and had our daughter, so she’s a native! I took a position with the then-acclaimed Oscar Taylor restaurant and then Che Bella before joining the Mastro’s family in 2000, when I became the chef for their Marco Polo restaurant in Scottsdale. I actually helped design the original menu for Ocean Club and helped to open it back in 2001. What are some of your favorite ingredients to use? I use olive oil for just about everything and love cooking with saffron. I also love to get creative with pasta, especially gnocchi. What would we be surprised to know about you? I never formally learned English. I picked up everything I know from friends in kitchens around the world. Mastro’s Ocean Club, 15045 N. Kierland Blvd., Scottsdale; 480.443.8555; www.mastrosrestaurants.com.

End NEW IN TOWN

THE SCOTT A reimaged resort debuts in Scottsdale

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ | PHOTO BY TANVEER BADAL

The resort formerly known as FireSky has been revamped and reopened as The Scott Resort & Spa thanks to new ownership. Near Old Town Scottsdale, the resort has completed phase one of a $15 million renovation that updated all of the public spaces including the pool area, lobby lounge, restaurant, bar and several model rooms. “Our goal with The Scott was to evoke the area’s local Sonoran style while nodding to the property’s two muses – Scottsdale founder Winfield Scott and Cuban-American immigrant Julian Duarte – through the colors of old Havana and the elegant geometry of Bauhaus,” says John Grossman of Classic Hotels & Resorts, the new ownership group of The Scott. Upon entering the resort, guests will be greeted with vibrantly colored woven textiles, comfortable seating nooks, lush indoor and outdoor plantings, historic family portraiture, and tapestries. The overall design mimics old Spanish missions and is accented by utilitarian fixtures and finishes as well as clean geometric forms. In the lobby, caning screens contrast against the modern curved brass of Bauhaus-inspired chandeliers and rattan

settees scattered throughout, reflecting the eclectic style of Havana. Blue-glazed olive jars and indoor landscaping create an intimate seating oasis. A handcrafted, Spanishtiled bar and existing arches reflect the traditional, original architecture of the space. “One of the great successes of the renovation is our newly opened signature restaurant, The Canal Club. Our talented chef de cuisine, Chris Castro, has created a thoughtful menu that unites a vast range of Latin flavors,” Grossman says. Menu specialties include crispy skin salmon with Peruvian potato hash and chipotle butter ($30) and paella with vegetables and saffron rice in a tomato broth ($20). “While new in concept and menu, our bar still capitalizes on the indoor-outdoor layout people loved so much at FireSky,” says Grossman, noting that a massive indoor tree was planted as a new focal point for the bar. Among the recommendations from behind the bar are the Cubano Viejo featuring rum with Demerara, lime, mint, prosecco and bitters ($12) and the Mission Revival featuring tequila with cold-brew coffee, pineapple and bitters ($12). The upgrades to the resort’s two lagoon-like pools include the addition of high-end cabanas and new, beautiful landscaping. Guests and locals will continue to enjoy creative cocktails and light bites from The Canal Club Poolside and can dip their toes in the resort’s sandy beach pool. “We revitalized this space with the idea of balance in mind, echoing the minimalist beauty of the desert while creating purposeful moments of intimacy,” Grossman says. Plans to continue to evolve the resort are also already underway, with a second phase planned for this year to revamp the remaining guestrooms and suites, slated for completion in the fall.
