December is one of my favorite months of the year, not only because it’s my birth month (shoutout to my fellow Sagittarius folks!), but because it’s a time of whimsy and merriment. When else are we dreaming of sugarplum fairies and counting down the days by eating a piece of chocolate? It’s truly the only time of year that packs so much enchantment – from twinkling lights to colorful decor to festive performances aplenty – into a 31-day span. Perhaps December is most magical when you’re a child, but even for adults, if you look beyond the busyness of the season, you’ll find sprinkles of that same sense of awe in many places. In fact, here in Arizona we have quite an assortment of wintry wonderlands. In the Valley, there’s a chilly ice bar, serene snowfall, and ice skating (on real ice, no less), plus all kinds of holiday cheer at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. Journey north to, well, the North Pole Experience near Flagstaff, and head to Sedona for two visual treats: The Festival of Lights, which features 6,000 luminarias, and red rock country’s playful spin on the northern lights. A HELPING HAND
Entrepreneur Sarah Benken on overcoming the odds and inspiring others to do the same
As a vivacious junior in high school – with lots of friends and activity involvement including DECA and tutoring elementary school students – no one would have predicted Sarah Benken’s teenage pregnancy, her choice to drop out of high school, or the struggles she would face in the years to come. Yet, it was
Benken alone who took this challenge head-on. “Like everything else in my life, I had no idea what I was doing,” says the North Carolina native. “I was certain I wanted to beat the odds and show the all the naysayers that I could become somebody regardless of my circumstances. I dropped out of high

Pulse UP CLOSE school my junior year because I couldn’t make ends meet on a part-time job and refused my parents’ financial support. Having a baby was my decision, and one I had to overcome alone.” Benken spent the next 10 years juggling the hectic life of raising a child, getting her GED, and working full-time. She landed her first job in accounting at 17, giving her a decent paycheck, but deep down she wanted more. Over the years, she suffered through lengthy commutes and long hours; like so many, she was overworked and underpaid. “One day, I realized I was sick of the rat race and that I had a desire to become my own boss. But how?” Benken says. “I had been going through a period of discovery and reflection for about a year when my mother suggested the idea of opening an errand-running service. At first, I laughed it off, but the idea stuck and within a month I was creating Metro’s Other Woman.” At just age 26, Benken founded Metro’s Other Woman (www.metrosotherwoman.com) to help restore work-life balance for busy executives and small business owners. As a national lifestyle management firm, Metro’s Other Woman specializes in calming chaos by eliminating pesky chores and “time sucks” – such as home maintenance or personal organization – so people can focus on what matters most. They specialize in business and personal services including housekeeping, laundry, meal prep, dog walking, booking appointments, and event planning. Within two weeks of launching her self-funded business, Benken was able to secure enough income to walk away from her full-time job. Over the following year, with the help of business partner Michael Foushee, they expanded to an additional market while developing a licensing model. Currently, Metro’s Other Woman is active in four major markets, including Phoenix, with further expansion plans for 2018. “I think too many women are scared to take the leap into owning their own business,” Benken says. “Here’s the truth: It will never be the right time, and you’ll never be prepared for what an entrepreneur’s life hands you. If you want to open a business, I say be as prepared as possible and, like me, have some great mentors around you. You need grit, so plan to dig deep.”
Paying It Forward It’s this drive that Benken is also passing on to her two children. Her kids see firsthand how much work goes into running a business, and she loves that it’s a family affair. Her children, respectively, have attended staff meetings and tradeshows, entered receipts into QuickBooks, helped set up for galas, and even appeared on news segments. She wants to inspire her children, and other women, to have independence and an entrepreneurial spirit. It’s her goal to be a mentor, like so many women were to her over the years. “Earlier this year, I unveiled the WAB [Win a Business] Program through Metro’s Other Woman,” Benken says. “WAB is a give-back program that awards a Metro’s Other Woman business to qualified women who desire to become entrepreneurs but lack either know-how or funding. The winners receive an 18-month mentorship, where they train directly with me and other

location owners. We want to give away 10 Metro’s Other Woman businesses within the next five years.” With a passion for helping women rise, she has also created the KNOW Tribe (www.theknowtribe.com), a no-cost association comprised of strong, successful business women who want to connect with others like them. Through this, Benken hopes to create a place where like-minded women can meet, create friendships and build business partnerships. “There are a ridiculous number of women in the Valley doing big things, and I thought that they should be celebrated,” says Benken, who is publishing a book for that purpose, featuring those in the KNOW Tribe. “KNOW Phoenix will be a coffee table-style book released in January that spotlights 150 female entrepreneurs throughout the Valley in virtually every industry. The women featured are a compilation of proven leaders, high producers, and rising stars – truly pillars of this great city.” Benken has also served as a mentor for pregnant teens, worked with human trafficking causes, and taught courses at Florence Crittenton and the Phoenix Dream Center on topics such as becoming your own boss, overcoming obstacles, removing shame, and moving forward. Though it’s been a long, winding road for Benken, it’s one that shaped her into who she is, and while she’s seen the light of success, she’s humbled by how she got here. “I know I am not here because of just myself,” Benken says. “I am where I am today because of everyone who has offered a hand as I stepped up the ladder – and it’s my mission to be that hand for others.”

A few months into the new year, Colling Media will celebrate its 10th anniversary. At the helm of its milestone is the company’s founder, Brian Colling. After earning degrees in business and communications at Arizona State University, Colling went on to work in media, where he focused on helping businesses grow with TV and online advertising. Colling’s passion for helping people find success in all aspects of their businesses, especially in the ever-changing advertising industry, led to him launch his own company. “I wanted to be able to help in all areas of advertising and marketing without limitations,” Colling says. In 2008, Colling Media was born. The company houses different advertising strategies that are unique to every business’ needs. “My ‘why’ is to make a difference in this world. I feel a good place to start is helping businesses find success as they work to improve the community. In many ways, I feel we help drive the economy.” For Colling, it’s all about results, which he says drive every aspect of his life. True to that mindset, Colling aims to get results for everyone, even organizations that cannot fully afford his services. Each year, his company picks one local organization to cover advertising costs. In recent years, those organizations have been universities. “We helped University of Arizona with an alumni event to raise money for scholarships and consulted with ASU for display advertising,” says Colling, who has also consulted for Kids Need to Read. “Education is extremely important to me, especially since one of our founding principles is continuous improvement through education.” Colling Media also makes regular donations to St. Mary’s Food Bank, Crisis Nursery, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix, T-Gen Foundation, Thunderbird Charities, and Helping Hands for Freedom. “These groups make big differences in the community, and I admire what they do,” he says. Between business and personal pursuits, Colling notes that there is never a dull moment. “My wife and two kids are my life. We have a lot of fun doing various activities together, from going to local sporting events and concerts to eating at Arizona’s amazing restaurants.”

MOTHERING OUR MOTHERS Kendra Clark’s heartfelt mission to empower women and their families

Kendra Clark believes that every mother deserves a little mothering, too. As a mother of four herself – as well as a grandmother and certified physician assistant – Clark could be called an expert on that fact. It’s been her experience that too few women get the help and reassurance they actually need, which is why she created Everything Mother, a community of women that offers free parenting education and resources to empower new mothers (and fathers). “My intention with Everything Mother is to cultivate confidence, offer education and provide resources to new mothers in the postpartum period, and, frankly, as long as they might need it,” Clark says. “I believe when we empower mothers, we strengthen marriages, nurture children and fortify families.” While Clark agrees that support for new mothers has always been a concern, today’s more connected environment makes it an even greater challenge. The advent of cell phones and social media amplifies the effect of isolation and challenges many new parents. “Scottsdale is home to many amazing mothers who strive to cultivate a rich environment for their babies and children,” Clark says. “However, the reality is that many mamas suffer in silence and feel the need to compete with the ‘perfect’ image of their peers that are often portrayed on Facebook and other social media platforms. They see only the best others are experiencing, but that is often not reality.” During Everything Mother sessions, participants are encouraged to stow away phones and focus on themselves. The group is an encouraging, judgement-free place where women share their personal stories, daily struggles, triumphs and tears. It’s also a place for women in any phase of parenthood, offering groups for everything from postpartum to working moms to empty nesters. “Not all women are lucky enough to have the support system they deserve and that’s OK,” Clark says. “For those women, we are here and waiting with open arms. An avid coin collector as a kid, Nick Grovich, the president of American Federal Rare Coin & Bullion in Carefree, Arizona, now boasts a new kind of menagerie: a closet full of covetable footwear. “I love shoes,” he admits. “I really love Dr. Martens and Jared Lang, and I always get compliments on my Duckie Brown Saddle Shoes by Florsheim.” The world-renowned coin dealer, who works with clients throughout the U.S., has a soft spot for interesting embellishments and fittingly enough, a natural penchant for lustrous materials. “I used to dress much more conservatively,” Grovich says. “I’m more fashion-forward and casual now, as things have become more relaxed in business attire.” Nowadays, a typical ensemble consists of BOSS trousers, French cuff shirts and cuff links, a designer tie, and the occasional pair of colorful socks or suspenders. Off the clock, he’ll reach for vintage rock T-shirts and jeans by Rogue or Cult of Individuality. “I love things that are unique,” he says. “[Things] you don’t just see everywhere.”
From whom or what do your draw your inspiration? My wife has become my stylist, and we did a major overhaul of my wardrobe when she moved in. I’m now more conscious of getting exact fits for the best look. Coins are often attached to a rich backstory. Does the same ring true about any particular piece in your wardrobe? My new wife, Laura, presented me with a beautiful pair of cuff links that match our diamond and opal wedding rings with “forever” inscribed on the sides. They are really special to me, and I often take them with me when I travel. What might we be surprised to find in your closet? Seven pairs of designer cowboy boots.

After more than 20 years in the fashion, publishing, public relations and entertainment industries, Dominique Rose Charbit came to the conclusion that her personal look could never be contained by any existing parameters – so she created her own. The native Parisian’s signature “gypsetter” style fuses “the sophistication of a jet-setter and the free-spirited lifestyle of a gypsy,” two identities embraced in her online magazine, World of Dominique Rose. “I wear everything you see in my online magazine,” says Rose, who counts Zimmermann and Loup Charmant among her favorite designers. “I only curate products I would or will buy.” The publication is many things: an outlet for her entrepreneurial spirit, a sanctuary for pleasure seekers, and perhaps most importantly, an embodiment of her bohemian flare. Rather than recycling tired trends, the world traveler gathers inspiration from trips to the French Riviera, Italy, Spain and Mexico, building her wardrobe upon flowy pieces that punctuate her beachy vibe and proclivity for adventure. “I get so much fulfillment discovering new places,” she says. “Arizona is where I experienced and achieved my ‘American Dream’ and I am so grateful.”

All the letters my parents wrote to me once I moved to the U.S. These last few years, however, I’ve learned not to be attached to anything, as I have moved many times. Where do you most enjoy traveling? Ibiza, Spain. What style secrets have you picked up while trotting the globe? Be comfortable and always take flat shoes with you! But it depends on the city. When I’m in Paris, I wear very stylized, modern bohemian-rock outfits. When I’m in Ibiza, I wear a kaftan over a swimsuit and flat sandals.

Actress Amanda Melby Crisalli shares her onstage story and the behind-the-scenes perseverance it took to get there

Like any seasoned actress, Amanda Melby Crisalli’s life is filled with a myriad of roles, with her most recent being a leading role in Raising Buchanan, a feature-length comedy that recently wrapped filming in the Valley. The Scottsdale resident also runs her own acting studio, Verve Studios (www.vervestudio.net), in Scottsdale Airpark; is an adjunct professor at Arizona State University; and is a busy mom. She plays many characters on screen and in theater, but it’s her day-to-day life – and personal journey as a performer – that has been her most significant role. A native Minnesotan, Crisalli landed in Phoenix after living in Southern California; Washington, D.C.; and Cleveland. From a small town, she had big dreams of acting onstage and making her name known on the silver screen – dreams that started when she was young, in a household that embraced the drama of acting and a love for music. Her parents met studying theater at St. Cloud State University and then owned and ran a music store. They lived a busy life, raising four children, running the shop, and being active in theater and community service. “We were all very dramatic and musical,” Crisalli says. “I played the cello, violin, oboe, flute, piano and guitar throughout childhood. My sister played violin, piano and drums and my brothers played piano, guitar and drums. My parents loved to sing and act, so we all did theater, too. It was a world of music and make believe; I loved every second of it.” It was this passion for performing that attracted Crisalli to the acting world. She was just in third grade when she tried out for the lead part in The Miracle Worker at her local theater. Her mother’s friend was directing it, so young Crisalli thought she was a shoo-in, though it would prove to be her first taste of real disappointment and a lesson that she’d carry throughout her career. “I did not get the lead and was cast as a Perkins Girl instead,” Crisalli says. “It was an early lesson in how hard this business is and how even if you have some doors open for you, talent still wins the role. I really wanted to act, so I tried out for Wind in the Willows shortly after and was cast as Wendy Weasel. I got a talent agent around age 16 and started booking commercials and modeling work and have never looked back.” Additionally, as an accomplished cellist, Crisalli was awarded a prestigious music scholarship to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where she earned second chair in the cello section of the symphony orchestra. Though, despite her accolades and early gigs, it wasn’t an easy journey for Crisalli. Being cast in commercials and taking parts in local plays did not quite pay the bills. She took on jobs mowing lawns for the parks department, working the night shift at a printing factory, taking pictures of babies at a mall portrait studio, and was a registered group exercise instructor. She also took any part that was offered to her. “I am not embarrassed to say that I earned my Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card on a McDonald’s commercial when I lived in Cleveland,” Crisalli says. “It was for a regional campaign, and we were asked to sing and dance to the jingle: ‘8 for 88 and I like it!’ At the audition, I was almost paralyzed by embarrassment, but right after we started, I switched my mindset and decided to have fun. From there, the confidence came and I booked a lot more work.”

Joe Niekro Foundation presents the third annual Phoenix Knuckleball

On Dec. 9, athletes and celebrities from across the country join will Phoenicians at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia for a fun-filled and philanthropic night. Hosted by the Joe Niekro Foundation (JNF), the Phoenix Knuckleball is an annual gala that supports brain aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation (AMV), and hemorrhagic stroke research and awareness. JNF is committed to providing public education, services and support for patients and families as well as aiding in the advancement of neurological research. In fact, JNF currently has 32 support groups across North America as well as an online community of more than 20,000 survivors, caregivers, physicians, and other supporters. The Phoenix Knuckleball helps makes all of this, and more, possible for the foundation. A Pitch for Life paints the theme for this year’s gala, which will be chaired by former MLB pitcher Brett Merriman and his wife, Anita. The evening’s emcee will be Norris Thomas, a former cornerback for the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who is now a motivational speaker, author and broadcaster. Daniel Moreno, a local army veteran, American Ninja Warrior and AMV survivor, will be the keynote speaker. Both Thomas and Moreno will be joined by others in the community who will share their stories and educate others about JNF’s life-giving mission. Guests of the black-tie affair will be greeted with a cocktail reception. The

night will continue with a gourmet dinner and special programming, including filmed survivor stories, guest speakers, a live auction, and live entertainment by the Groove Merchants. Proceeds from the Phoenix Knuckleball will go toward the advancement and expansion of the foundation’s Patient Services Program, which provides emotional support to patients and their families. The North Pole Experience Departing from the Little America Hotel in Flagstaff almost nightly through Dec. 28 (not open on Christmas Day), the North Pole Experience starts by taking families on a trolley ride to Santa’s massive workshop in the middle of the forest. Once there, guests of all ages take part in hands-on experiences, including working side by side with elves making toys, seeing Santa’s sleigh, and enjoying cookies with Mrs. Claus. A bonus for the kids – they can get access to Santa’s main factory floor, with soaring toy slides and a special commemorative teddy bear from Santa himself. For nearly 20 years, Flagstaff has offered a quirky alternative called The Great Pine Cone Drop, a tradition that was started to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the historic Weatherford Hotel leading into the year 2000. After Thanksgiving, the hotel hoists a 150-pound, 6-foot, LED-lit pine cone – made with more than 200 aluminum petals reminiscent of a Christmas ornament (only much bigger!) – up three stories above its roof. Then, on New Year’s Eve, thousands of revelers bundle up (the average temperature is about 20 degrees) and gather in the streets, counting down to 10 p.m. to coincide with the Times Square celebration in New York City, and then again at midnight to mark Arizona’s magical moment. Each year, a local DJ spins songs from the hotel’s balcony, leading the crowd in a countdown as the Weatherford Hotel dazzles with a light show followed by fireworks. ARTISTIC OPPORTUNITY Meet Veronica Graffius, the visionary behind Calvin Charles Gallery

Located in the heart of the Scottsdale Art District, Calvin Charles Gallery has been dazzling art lovers since 1999. What began as a small Asian antique dealer has now grown into an internationally recognized modern art destination with elegant architectural design. The 6,000-square-foot gallery, which also functions as an event venue, focuses on bringing mostly contemporary and Asian art, representing more than 36 international artists from diverse backgrounds and art disciplines, including painting and sculpture. Some of the exhibited artists include Fernando Botero, Aurora Canero, Pascal and Jennyfer Stratman. “Every piece of artwork in the gallery was made in the hands of an individual originating from a different part of the world, with a different story and a different message,” says Veronica Graffius, the gallery’s managing partner. “We take pride in sharing the inspiring stories of our artists, and although many of them started as a ‘starving artist,’ their hard work has paid off,” she says. Mexican-native Graffius joined the gallery in 2005 when the former owner of the gallery and Graffius’ best friend, Deborah O’Hara, asked her to do so. “She had an eye for art, and I had an eye for managing sales,” Graffius says. “Both being visionaries and art lovers, we took the gallery to new heights with an influx of new artists, growth of collectors, and movement in the community of Scottsdale.” In 2008, after O’Hara passed away, Graffius was chosen as the beneficiary to take over the gallery. Now, after nine years, Graffius has grown alongside the gallery. “The opportunity to manage such a marvelous gallery has been a blessing in my life,” says Graffius, emphasizing that her goal is to continue to represent well-established artists, as well as to provide the opportunity for emerging artists. “I find beauty in the stories behind every piece of art,” she says. “I find beauty in the fact that every artist has a different style, given where their journey in life is taking them.” Among other objectives, Graffius notes that one of the gallery’s goals is to educate and inspire students by reaching out to nonprofits and fine arts programs to educate younger generations about art and that “the sky is the limit.” Calvin Charles Gallery has three upcoming exhibitions in 2018: Home to the Soul of Mexico by Gennaro Garcia (Jan. 4-29; opening reception Jan. 4, 6:30-8:30 p.m.), Luna’s Sol by Stephanie Page (Feb. 8-March 1; opening reception Feb. 8, 6:30-8:30 p.m.), and an exhibit, unnamed at press time, by Nigel Conway (March 8-April 3; opening reception March 8, 6:30-8:30 p.m.). 2018 MERCEDES-BENZ GLA250 Good things in a small package BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS: Base price: $33,400
The small, compact luxury crossover segment is growing rapidly, flooded with a vast array of makes and models. Mercedes-Benz’s entry is the GLA250, more hatchback than SUV and smaller than the maker’s other compact crossover, GLC. Since its debut in 2015, GLA has seen few substantial changes but many minor upgrades. The 2018 model gets redesigns to the front and rear bumpers, grille, wheels, and LED taillights. The power rear liftgate can be opened or closed with the wave of your foot under the bumper and a rearview camera is now standard. Interior changes include a new 8-inch infotainment screen, Android Auto compatibility, and a black ash matte wood trim. GLA is offered in three trim levels: the base front-wheel drive GLA250 (tested here) with a 208-horsepower, turbo-charged V-4 engine; the all-wheel drive GLA250 4MATIC, which has the same engine and horsepower as the base model; and the performance-oriented AMG GLA 45 allwheel drive with 375 horsepower. There is also a special Ice Edition that’s mostly an appearance package and is limited to just 400 units. Acceleration should satisfy most drivers, but

I did experience some turbo lag – slight engine hesitation – upon acceleration. Although not a sports coupe, GLA has crisp handling. But the suspension is on the firm side and not so welcome on rough roads with uneven pavement. The 4MATIC system is surprisingly capable and will do well on snowy roads and rough gravel, thanks to the optional off-road comfort suspension. Slip behind the steering wheel and you’ll find a favorable, elevated driving position. All cabin materials are high quality with meticulous craftsmanship. There’s plenty of legroom up front, however, two average-sized adults will struggle to remain comfortable in the diminutive rear seat. The GLA is equipped with a suite of safety systems, including eight standard airbags, plus warning systems like Active Brake Assist to avoid or mitigate collisions and Attention Assist to detect signs of drowsy driving. Overall, GLA is the best-looking vehicle in its segment. There’s room enough for four, even if the rear seat isn’t as roomy as I’d like. But for all its good looks, the ride might be too firm. And for those who seek a real crossover rather than a tall hatchback, GLA may not fill the bill.

Carlson Creek: 2015 Malbec This family-owned, Cochise County-based vineyard – which also has a tasting room in Scottsdale – has grown so popular that it’s expanded from 40 to 280 acres since its inception just a handful of years ago. The Malbec, the vineyard’s first-ever release of this varietal, is a full-bodied bottle with hints of smoke and tobacco. It also has malbec’s signature notes of black pepper as well as rich flavors of plums and blackberries. $40.
Javelina Leap 2015 Zinfandel Last year’s winner of the Arizona Republic Wine Competition for top zinfandel, this 100 percent zinfandel – grown entirely on Javelina Leap’s own estate in Northern Arizona – knocks you down with its dizzying pepper and spice notes, only to pick you back up with its mellow, supple mouthfeel and sinfully satisfying flavors of cherry and passion fruit. $36.
LDV Winery 2012 The Signature Petite Sirah Located in the Chiricahua Mountains of Cochise County and also boasting its own tasting room in Scottsdale, LDV Winery focuses on growing Rhône varietal grapes including syrah, grenache, viognier, and – fittingly, their signature grape – petite sirah. “The Signature” is made from 100 percent petite sirah grapes and is only made when the vintage produces grapes that will showcase well on their own. This ultra-full-bodied wine explodes with smoky, spicy, dark fruit flavors. $40.
Page Springs Cellars 2015 Grenache Fun fact: Grenache is the most widely planted grape in the world. However, in Arizona – due to the terrain – it takes on a silky texture quite unique to the area. This blend of 89 percent grenache and 11 percent barbera is sourced from fruit spanning three different vineyards across Elgin, Fort Bowie and Portal in Southern Arizona. This gives it intensity upon first swirl and sip followed by crystal-clear flavors of strawberry, stone fruit and even a hint of herbs. $40.
Pillsbury Wine Company 2013 Guns & Kisses A recent double gold medal winner at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, this earthy, peppery shiraz is as big and bold as it is surprisingly balanced. Wine aficionados will note something unique on the nose – the distinct aroma of viognier. That’s because this 100 percent estate wine is made in the tradition of Côte-Rôtie, a lauded wine region of France where they coferment red wine with white viognier grapes for their aroma. $72. Lincoln, A JW Steakhouse at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa recently launched a sizzling new steakhouse menu under the direction of executive chef Paul Millist. Of note is Millist’s 22-ounce bone-in rib-eye steak ($55), topped with king crab Oscar as an optional add-on ($10). A USDA prime cut, the rib-eye is cooked using a Josper Charcoal Oven, an elegant combination of a grill and oven that – at 1,200 degrees – burns clean and only gives a light char to the meat, locking in the juiciness and delicate flavors of the coveted cut. Millist then tops it with massive hand-pulled pieces of sweet Alaskan king crab leg and a classic, creamy French bearnaise sauce, which lends hints of salt and butter to the dish. NIGHT FALLS Bourbon & Bones’ seductive seasonal elixir

Arizona mixology icon Richie Moe, famously known for his work at Cowboy Ciao, Binkley’s Restaurant Group, and Kazimierz World Wine Bar, as well as co-founder of both Citizen Public House and The Gladly, once dreamt of becoming a chemist of sorts. It’s no wonder, then, that at his latest position as beverage director at Bourbon & Bones Chophouse & Bar, he is considered the mad scientist of mixology. Moe’s latest experiment, Night Falls ($16), is equal parts fall, flabbergasting and fantastic. And it starts with … butter. “Yes, butter – not to mention brown sugar,” says Moe, who uses a process called “fat washing” to infuse butter and brown sugar into Russell’s Reserve 10 Year Old Bourbon then clarifies it several times to separate the fat from the resulting creamy, sweetened bourbon. From there, in homage to the flavors in a Manhattan, he adds Carpano Antica Formula Sweet Vermouth and aromatic Angostura bitters, which bring out flavors of clove and nutmeg in the spirits. “At that point, we’ve more or less made an autumn-themed Manhattan, but we’re not done yet,” says Moe, who then adds Nux Alpina Walnut Liqueur, a nutty Italian spirit made from unripe green walnuts known for their smoothness. All ingredients are then stirred together and poured into a martini glass. “We take it to the next level by adding an orange wheel we’ve drenched in cinnamon and baked until dehydrated,” Moe says. “As it sinks to the bottom of the glass, the cinnamon infuses with the clove and nutmeg flavors perfectly.” The result is a velvety, luscious and spirit-forward cocktail that will warm up any chilly fall or winter’s night. How did you get your start? Growing up in Illinois then Colorado, my parents worked multiple jobs, so if I wanted to eat, the cooking was up to me. I was so adept at it that I started cooking for the entire family on the weekends. This led to my first gig – working in my parents’ pizza place, a side business they shared, at just 14 years old. What led to your current gig? I moved out here at age 19 and got a job with Sun Devil House, which became Club Rio, in Tempe. I moved on to Houston’s, eventually earning a role as corporate kitchen trainer. At that time, I also attended and graduated from culinary school, then took my talents to White Chocolate Grill, The Vig, and a host of others before joining Arcadia Tavern in 2009, where I met Square One Concepts’ founder, Barrett Rinzler. We opened our first Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers in 2011, and the rest is history. How did the idea of Famous 48 come about? The actual idea came after a night of talking about all of our favorite comfort foods from across the country – the lower 48 states – and how we would put our spin on them. What can guests expect visually from Famous 48? Our 3,000-square-foot space is styled with leather horseshoe booths and wooden high tops with tufted honey leather bar stools for maximum comfort. Our open-air patio features couches and fire pits, creating an intimate dining and lounging experience. What are some early menu favorites? A new female-owned bar opens at South Scottsdale’s SkySong

For Erika Rode, all roads led her to Bitters, the newest craft cocktail hot spot in South Scottsdale, located at SkySong. Rode opened the 2,700-square-foot space – which boasts gorgeous exposed brick, intricate ductwork, and its own on-site garden – in late October, making it the first bar to open at the Arizona State Universityowned development since its inception nearly a decade ago. Her goals: to shine the spotlight on local breweries as well as unique craft options from across the globe; to churn out thoughtful handcrafted cocktails using small production spirits whenever possible; and to offer a small but mighty menu of fresh, fabulous food. “My passion for craft, small-batch production in food and drink developed during my time in the liquor and hospitality industries,” Rode says. “Meeting the families behind smaller vineyards, sitting with folks who started breweries in their garages, and tasting the difference in flavor at a distillery that chose an artisanal style over mass production resonated with me. I want to give the ‘smaller guys’ a voice.” And that she does, especially on

the beer and cocktail menus. Bitters features 12 rotating beers on tap, which are all local, limited-edition, or of craft variety. Current offerings include O.H.S.O. Popsicle Blonde, Elysian Night Owl, Huss Koffee Kölsch, and Ciderboys First Press. On the cocktail side, each of the signature options has the word “bitter” in the name, using a play on words (think The Bitter Truth and For Bitter or For Worse). All are made-to-order from fresh-squeezed juices and their own mixer recipes; you won’t find any premixed cocktails here. For those who prefer wine, there are nearly a dozen options by the glass as well as hand-selected bottles, which will also rotate. To pair with any of the above is a menu that features 12 signature small plates, which will change on a regular basis based on local ingredients and seasonality, as well as flavored popcorn and salads. Currently, the menu includes rock shrimp, farro risotto and beef satay. “Our gourmet plates are made from scratch with a seasonal and local focus. We offer quality choices and items across the entire menu, not just a focus on one category,” Rode says. They also offer a personalized locker program called the Bitter Enthusiast Club, where up to 30 members are granted access to the space to store their favorite bottle of whiskey to enjoy on-site anytime, plus exclusive tastings and access to rare bottles.
