YOU ASKED!

Q:

Dr. Gino Tutera, SottoPelle® founder answers your questions.

Why are so many people now getting hormone replacement using pellets?

Q: When did pellet therapy start? A: Pellet therapy originated in Europe over 75

years ago and was introduced to the U.S. by Dr. Greenblatt at the University of Georgia. Pellet hormone therapy has been extensively researched and studied in medical journals all over the world since 1935, yet many people don’t realize that pellet therapy was actually regularly employed in the United States from the 1940’s through the 1970’s until pharmaceutical marketing intruded. Pellets were designed to change the internal physiology by reconstructing the hormone levels as close to what a woman or a man would possess in their late thirties or early forties.

Q: Why did you get involved? A: I became involved with pellet therapy at Eisenhower Medical Hospital, in Rancho Mirage, CA, in 1992. I was approached by Dr. Donald McEwen to see if I could help him insert pellets. I agreed but asked, “What are pellets?” This is the exact same response I hear from other doctors every day all over the world. Dr. Donald McEwen was taught by Dr. Greenblatt, so you might say this is only two degrees of separation from the physician who first started working with them in the U.S. The more I spoke and worked with patients the more I realized there was a need to individualize the dose for each patient’s HRT treatment. We all don’t wear the same size shoe, so why would anyone expect everyone to have the same pellet dose? A light bulb went off and I started individualizing patients with their own customized dose, which is widely used today.

Q: Fear not the testosterone pellet! A: The majority of people fear hormones and especially testosterone. What they don’t realize is every human being, including women, needs and makes testosterone. As a matter of fact, women make 300mgm/day when they are in their prime! Testosterone pellets can be used to treat migraines and menstrual headaches. It can be an effective treatment for vaginal dryness, incontinence, urinary urgency and frequency. In both men and women, testosterone has been shown to increase energy, relieve depression, increase sense of well-being, relieve anxiety and improve memory and concentration. Testosterone pellets can increase lean body mass (muscle strength, bone density) and decrease fat mass. Men and women need continuous adequate levels which can only be achieved with testosterone pellets for optimal mental and physical health and for the prevention of chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, which have been associated with low testosterone levels.

Q: What makes your practice so different than anyone else doing pellets? A: I pioneered an innovative method of customized dosing that provides each patient with a precise amount of the highest quality bio-identical hormone suited to his or her individual needs. Prior to this development, patients were administered a one-size-fits-all generic dose of hormone, which is less effective and can trigger unwanted side effects. Many practices offer bio-identical hormone pellets but do not use our unique patent-pending dosing system based on science. For them it might be guesswork. While often copied but never duplicated, SottoPelle remains the leader in pellet hormone therapy with its ground-breaking science.

s I write this, I’m finishing packing for a vacation (literally—it’s 11 p.m., and I’m leaving at 6 a.m.!), a cruise to the Caribbean with my parents, sister, brother-in-law, and nephews. I’ve been rushing around all week working and getting ready. As I take a break to finally sit down and write this, there’s just one thought that pops into my mind: How thankful I am for the week ahead. The one thing I value more than anything in life is family (and all the amazing friends I have that I consider family, of course, as well!), and here I am, about to make amazing memories and spend quality time with them on a great trip. We’re in the midst of the holiday season right now, and as my kids get caught up in what presents they want, as all kids tend to do, I hope that they know that the best present of all is the people who are in their lives—family and friends. And of course, happiness and health, and the joy of giving to others, as well. I’m also thankful for the people I meet in my path. They may start off as strangers, but they often become close friends. One example? Those featured in our Most Powerful Under 40 story this month. It is so inspiring to me to see the talent and enthusiasm we have out there impacting the community and world. From all of them to the other people we feature throughout our pages, it’s amazing to see what’s happening locally, and how people are forging their paths and making an impact. As I put this issue to bed and head off on my trip, it’s so good to know that I have played a small part in bringing stories like these to you. It’s great to celebrate the community, our resources, and to create a place where we know each other, value each other, and perhaps, become close like family. Happy holidays, and happy New Year’s to you and yours!

Transcendental Treasures Jewelry designer Bonnie Radow proves that sentiment never goes out of style.

Wherever she goes, Bonnie Radow falls in love: with a stack of old letters here, a Victorian-era photograph or miniature doll there. In three decades spent as an interior designer, Bonnie traveled the world, amassing a collection of antique artifacts that appealed to her heart and her creative spirit. Always drawn to beautiful things, Bonnie also found herself procuring pieces of jewelry during her travels. She loved the way they looked, but was usually dismayed after wearing them; they were either flimsy or very uncomfortable. A gifted sculptor by nature, Bonnie drew on her talents and began designing and handcrafting jewelry for herself, just the way she liked it – substantial, yet easy to wear. In a flash of inspiration, she decided to incorporate things from her antique collection into the jewelry she was creating. She began with her heirloom storybook necklaces, each endowed with its own fascinating history – such as the achingly beautiful quote from a postcard she’d picked up in Provence: “The first time ever I saw your face, I knew I would always love you.” Her pieces were so unique and special that they got attention wherever she went: thus, Bonnie Radow Designs was born.

Initially, Bonnie’s plan was to introduce a line for high-end stores such as Barneys, but as her talents were sought by more and more customers, she realized how much she enjoyed the personal aspect of one-on-one sales. Just as her jewelry was inspired by stories from the past, it now gained new life as part of other people’s stories – timeless treasures given as tokens of love, meant to be handed down to future generations, continuing the legacy. She branched out, making custom pieces and adding a contemporary line, and was soon catering to clientele from New York to Los Angeles and everywhere in between. Bonnie enjoys hearing the personal stories behind each of her pieces, such as the necklace a husband gave his wife after the birth of their second son, or the surprise gift from a daughter to her mother on her 75th birthday. These are connections that can’t be made when people are anonymously purchasing jewelry from a department store, and for Bonnie, the love behind these gestures is her greatest source of inspiration. It’s a love that she strives to reflect in not only her designs, but in her community – such as her charity trunk show on December 4th, with a portion of the proceeds

benefiting cancer research through the TGen Foundation. When precious metals and sparkling gemstones meet oneof-a-kind artifacts from around the globe, and are transformed by Bonnie’s vision and talent, something beautiful happens. “I feel so lucky to be able to make people feel good through my work,” she enthuses. “The best part is when my clients call me and say, ‘I love it so much, I just can’t take it off.’”

STARDOM CALLING

Classical crossover singer Alexa Nadramia’s performances have taken her to Carnegie Hall (twice!), Los Angeles, and many places in-between BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

lexa Nadramia might only be 17-yearsold, but her music is already her life—in a big way. Born on Staten Island in New York and raised in New Jersey, Nadramia moved with her parents to Arizona about five years ago. Before she made Scottsdale her home, however, she was already on her way to stardom on the East Coast.

up close Growing Up With Music Nadramia started playing the piano at about age 6, studying with Russian musicians who had played at Carnegie Hall. She had been singing around the house since she was a tot, but hadn’t considered voice lessons until she was about 8-years-old. On a whim, her teacher had her hum something while sitting at the piano one day. With her teacher’s encouragement, she began voice lessons, and then decided to put piano on hold while she studied dance. “I missed piano,” says Nadramia. “I picked up lessons again when I was about 10 or 11, and I’ve studied since then.” That love of piano led her to compete in the Olympic Challenge Competition when she was about 12-years-old. “My teachers were involved in the competition, which took place at Carnegie Hall,” explains Nadramia. “So I applied, went before the panel of judges, and was accepted.” Playing at Carnegie Hall for the competition is a moment in her young life that Nadramia won’t forget. “It was a big thing for me,” she says, laughing. “My hands were shaking so hard as I was coming on stage. But then when I sat down and played, I didn’t make any mistakes.”

but you. You stand on the stage with the lights on you and everyone is silent.” That love of singing has now become Nadramia’s career focus. She calls herself a classical crossover singer, performing pop, folk songs and hymns inspired by such musicians as Welsh singers Charlotte Church and Katherine Jenkins, American folk singer Josh Groban, and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. “I want my music to be successful,” Nadramia says. “My dad is always behind me a hundred percent. He helps me a lot and is my mentor.

The Future

A Vocal Career Playing piano during the Olympic Challenge Competition wasn’t Nadramia’s only time at Carnegie. For the second time on the famed stage, she used her vocal training to compete in the International Vocal Competition in 2012. She placed first for her rendition of the old English folk song “The Water is Wide,” made famous by such greats as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and James Taylor. Nadramia says the experience was one she will never forget. “On that stage [at Carnegie Hall], it’s like no one is there

West Coast Performances When she first left New Jersey, Nadramia wasn’t sure where her career would go while away from New York and the other East Coast venues where she had already performed. While she still misses her beloved Russian music teachers, she has adapted to living in Arizona.

SS_36_39Trendsetter_Dec14.indd 38

“I’ve had a chance to perform at several local events since moving here,” she says. One of her favorites was performing at the first Italian Festival held by the Italian Association in April 2014 in Downtown Scottsdale’s SouthBridge district. “It was the longest I had ever performed at an event and I really enjoyed it,” she says. One of her most memorable performances since moving to Scottsdale was when she performed at the Italian Feast of San Gennaro Los Angeles (known as the Feast of LA), hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Carolla. “It was a great opportunity to meet people,” explains Nadramia.

38

Right now, Nadramia is a senior, completing her high school education through an online program. “That gives me a chance to focus on my music,” she explains, “but I definitely want to go to college and study music. I’m not yet certain if I will go Back East to college or stay here in the West.” No matter where she ends up in college, Nadramia knows music will be her life. “I know I want to be a successful artist,” she explains. “Maybe someday I’ll be signed to a label, but things have changed so much in the industry. Some of the best artists are now independent.” For Nadramia, music helps define her and she encourages others to follow their hearts. “Singing will always be with me no matter what,” she explains. “If it’s something you love to do, go for it. You have to stick to the things you’re good at—for me, that’s singing and writing songs. Everything takes time. When your time comes, you’ll know.” To find out more about Alexa Nadramia, visit www.azalexaofficial.weebly.com.

A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, Stylist and Color Expert, Sachi Studios With every new year comes new possibilities; the urge for change, for a fresh start, is nearly universal. And if you’ve heard of master stylist Rodney Gentry, this year you’ll want to start with your hair. His clients could just as easily be called fans, even traveling from other states because they’ll trust no one else with their tresses – and if you talk to any of them, be prepared for some enthusiastic gushing. Renowned for his skill, Gentry has become one of the most sought-after stylists in the Valley. Before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry owned and operated his own salon in Chicago, where he perfected the techniques for which he’s become legendary. Now located in the Sachi Studios, he brings modern, big-city style, infused with a hearty splash of Midwestern charm that makes clients feel instantly comfortable: a combination which, more often than not, garners an unshakable loyalty. Drawing on years of experience, with a keen eye and attention to detail, Gentry strives to bring out the best in each of his clients, whether doing a routine trim or a dramatic hair makeover. He not only focuses on the style and color, but on restoring the health of the hair to full vitality, strength, and shine. “I don’t skimp when it comes to products,” he says. “I use the high-quality stuff. It’s all top of the line.” In Gentry’s capable hands damaged hair doesn’t stand a chance, trans-

forming from dry, frizzy, lackluster locks, often within just a few sessions. Above all, Gentry specializes in color. Highlights are expertly placed to accentuate his clients’ features, color custom-designed to flatter each unique skin tone. He uses innovative methods and premium products (enzyme-based, rather than damaging peroxides) to ensure perfect results every time, and stays updated on the latest advances in the industry in order to keep clients trendy and cuttingedge. “The key to success is education,” he says. Gentry’s clientele achieve not only a fabulous look and healthier hair, but a style which can be easily managed and replicated outside the salon. His goal is to leave each person feeling as amazing every day as they do when they leave his side – because every style has to work in the real world. To do this, he takes the time to learn about their daily lives, ensuring plenty of one-onone time by never double-booking. “You can give them something beautiful, but if it’s not part of their lifestyle, they’re not going to be able to maintain it,” he says. For 2015, Gentry forecasts several trends: Salted Caramel Hair Color to Chocolate Truffle hair color, Boho Waves, braids , long ponytails and twists are just a few of the things we can look forward to. And he’ll be bringing these styles – and more – to the Valley, with the kind of pride and expertise he’s become.

Contact Rodney Gentry at 480.639.2000 or via his website, www.rodneygentry.com, or visit him inside the Sachi Studios at 10201 N. Scottsdale Rd., Suite 28, Scottsdale, AZ 85258

BREW CONNOISSEUR Jeffrey Kravetz regales with tales of fine ales BY ELIZABETH HUGHES

I

t was 2008. Amidst economic crisis, investment professional Jeffrey Kravetz took up a hobby to relax–namely, beer. Don’t get the wrong idea. The Scottsdale-based CFA was more interested in brewing than in overindulgence. Kravetz, the regional investment manager for U.S. Bank, laughs, “You could go buy beer at the store for less.” Today, Kravetz is among the estimated 1.2 million home brewers in America. He brews small batches that yield about 50 bottles, most of which he gives away to friends and clients. Bottles from Kravetz’s kitchen showcase industry-hip labels like “Too Big to Fail Ale” or “Risk on Ale” that clients love. Kravetz’s teenage children Ben and Nina have input on the labels, as well. And his wife, Sandy, not only approves of the hobby, but bought him his first brewing kit. She remembered her husband’s interest in imported European beers from when the couple was starting out in New Jersey in their 20s. Sandy also likes that Kravetz can pair brews with food when the couple socializes. He adds, “Some people are experts on wine. I’m an expert on beer, and Sandy loves that and is very supportive.”

Etc.

Prior to becoming a home brewer, what store-bought craft beer was your favorite? I like hoppy beers, in other words, beers with a high hop content. Prior to starting my home brewing career, my favorite store-bought beer was Stone Brewing India Pale Ale from Escondido, Calif. It’s a classic West Coast IPA with a burst of citrusy hops. What artisanal ingredient would you most like to attempt to use in a future home-brew, and why? Prickly pear syrup. It is a sweet syrup from the prickly pear cactus. I like to experiment with local ingredients. Would you ever try to convert your passion for brewing into capital? For me, it’s just a hobby. This is never going to be about making money. I just want to improve my technique and have a lot of fun with it. This is just a great way to relax and have some fun. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

THE DOCTOR OF MUSIC

usic and medicine. Doesn’t seem like a likely pairing, but don’t tell that to Chris “Doc” Stewart, world-class alto saxophonist. Stewart is an ER physician at the Mayo Clinic Hospital by day, and when he isn’t saving lives, he is working on his other passion—music. Stewart just released his CD, Code Blue. Comprised of musicians he knew from his pre-medicine days, Stewart calls the compilation one of his greatest accomplishments. “I spent a lot of time and money on this project. I decided to do this as a onetime thing and the response has been unbelievable,” says Stewart. “The record has been submitted for a Grammy nomination and it is a really important part of where I am in my career and in my life.” Stewart says his inspiration for music comes from Cannonball Adderly and Charlie Parker. He began playing music at a young age, and professionally at Disneyland when he was 16. It wasn’t until he was in his 20s that he decided to head back to school and work towards his medical degree. Stewart says he certainly credits music for helping lead his way in life.

Etc.

What are your non-musical inspirations? I have two distinct non-musical inspirations: surfing and Craftsman-era woodwork. I try to get to the ocean and surf as much as possible. I completely customized the inside of my house in the Craftsman style, and filled it with my own handmade furniture, copying Gustav Stickley. What do you like to do when you are not in the ER or playing the saxophone? I try to workout every day. That keeps me in shape for surfing and is good for my health. I completed my first Ironman last year and dedicated a song on my CD to the event—“Ironman Blues.” What is your favorite musical album that is non-jazz music, and why? I listen to the Beach Boys. I think it is because we grew up in the same area and they were pretty big when I was a kid surfing. My wife is not a jazz-listener, and their music feels good to both of us. I tend to be pretty critical musically, but for some reason, I don’t care about the musical quality when it comes to the Beach Boys—I just sing along. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

hen she’s not at her day job as an administrative assistant at Scottsdale Document Solutions, a print and design company, Renee Bryant is also an actress and model. She is appearing next in the movie Durant’s Never Closes, starring Tom Sizemore, Dina Meyer, Pam Grier and Peter Bogdanovich. “It’s always been a huge dream of mine. I love acting and I love being in front of the camera.” The film is being shot at iconic Downtown Phoenix restaurant Durant’s. While it’s fun to play dress-up, Bryant keeps her real life fashion realistic. “When I was younger, I was super lanky and skinny and I never looked good in shorts, so I was always wearing jeans,” she says. She keeps her shopping strategy simple and goes for comfortable and stylish fashion that won’t kill her budget. She is also a self-professed shoe collector. “I just love shoes. My mom used to call me Imelda Marcos,” she says. Bryant’s wardrobe includes a staple that has stuck with her for years. “The one thing I do love is Buckle brand jeans,” Bryant notes. “They have the best jeans. I’ve bought the Buckle brand since I was in high school and I still have a couple of Buckle jeans from high school that I still can wear. Those jeans last forever. “ How would you describe your personal sense of style? I’m very casual and I love a great pair of jeans. I like to be comfortable, but still cute. I especially love the fall when it gets colder out. I love wearing a pair of jeans with tall boots and a cute top. Even when it’s 115 degrees out, I’ll still wear jeans. Where do you love to shop for clothes? I love to shop anywhere that I can get great clothes for a good price. I love T.J.Maxx, honestly. I’m a “Maxxinista.” But I still like to go to the mall and if I have a big event, I love to get a dress from Arden B. They have the most amazing dresses. I also discovered a store called Pretty Please and they also have beautiful dresses. Who is your favorite style icon? I love Natalie Portman. I also love Jennifer Lawrence. She’s just so comfortable with herself that she can make anything look amazing.

avid Shelko’s style relies heavily on where he is going and what he is doing. Shelko has a degree in both international business and fashion merchandising, and later chose to go into the healthcare arena in the medical device sales industry. Keeping his style sharp and sophisticated is a must when visiting clients, he says, as he explains that he enjoys building relationships with his clientele and helping people within his field. You can typically find him wearing a fitted suit with a crisp white shirt, accompanied by a pair of cuff links and a pocket handkerchief. On his off-time, Shelko keeps it casual and comfortable with jeans and flip-flops. He typically shops at Nordstrom or Bloomingdale’s, and is drawn towards the brands Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren. For his casualwear, Shelko frequents surf shops for Hawaiian shirts and enjoys wearing Diesel. Shelko also enjoys staying active by golfing, going out to the driving range, swimming laps, lifting weights, and playing tennis. What are a few of your favorite golf courses? Some of my favorite golf courses here are McDowell Mountain, Rancho Mañana, and The Phoenician. Do you have a favorite outfit in your closet? My favorite type of look would be a great pair of dark denim, paired with a fitted V-neck short or long sleeved shirt, depending on how hot it is. Throw in a striking watch and you’re good to go!

t’s easy to believe that when 4-year-old Oliver Ekman-Larsson put on ice skates for the first time, that everyone around him knew he’d become a professional hockey player someday. After all, he comes from a long line of talented Swedish hockey players, including a grandfather who represented his country at the Olympics. But even though he makes it look so easy now, there was a time when his future was uncertain.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson is one of the best blueliners in the NHL, and he’s only 23 “It’s hard to explain, but there were a couple of guys who were better than me when we were around 13- and 14-yearsold who also played other sports,” he explains. “But hockey has always been the number one sport for me, so it was an easy choice for me to focus and get better. Probably when I was around 15-16, around there, I knew I’d go pro.” And go pro he did. After being drafted into the NHL by the Arizona Coyotes at the age of 18, Ekman-Larsson played one more year in Sweden before coming to America and exploding onto the scene as one of the best young defensive players in the league. Ask around, and experts will tell you to remove the word “young,” though Ekman-Larsson is only 23. He’s simply one of the best in the league, hands-down. For an elite professional athlete, Ekman-Larsson is incredibly humble and down to earth. He certainly knows he’s good, but he’s known on and off the ice as a respected opponent and nice guy who just happens to be able to move the puck around with ease, all while keeping the other team at bay.

Moving from Sweden to America is no easy transition, but it’s one that EkmanLarsson has truly enjoyed. “I go back to Sweden over the summer,” he says. “It’s nice to go back and spend time with family and friends. They’re all in Sweden, so I’m here by myself, but it’s working out. I live with a teammate, so that’s nice. Sweden is home, but I’m living my dream right now. I always dreamed of playing over here so I’m happy and excited to be over here.” Throughout his journey, he’s remained close to his family, and has gotten even closer to one member. “My family has been here a couple of times to see me play,” he says. “They still work back home so it’s kinda hard for them to come over here. They usually come out once or twice a year. My mom is a hairdresser and my dad takes care of old people who can’t take care of themselves. I have one younger brother and he plays hockey. He’s playing for my hometown team. It’s a pretty good league. He actually came out here this summer. He was here for the development camp with all the rookies–he got drafted. He was here for a week to practice with them. He had a good time. It was fun for him to come over to see how it works. We weren’t really close growing up, because it’s four years between us, but it’s coming. We’re getting along pretty good right now. He’s getting older and we’re pretty close now.” He gives credit to his family for getting him into hockey (“I watched my dad play so that’s probably why I got into it,” he says), but he’s had the most success in the game so far. After starting college at 17, he “was in college back home for a year, but decided to drop out and just focus on hockey the last two seasons in Sweden” he says. “I decided to come over to the NHL right away.”

The Language Barrier That move came with a few hiccups—first and foremost, the language barrier. “No, I did not speak English,” he says. “It was a big step for me. I was moving away from my family and it’s not a one-hour flight, you know? The guys on the team helped me out very much, and it helps me a lot that I have teammates who played in Sweden.”

From Sweden to Arizona

“I love everything about Arizona and I like the team and I like the fans we have,” he says. “We have a lot of fans and it has been pretty good lately at the games. I’m just happy to be a part of the organization here.” As for the biggest difference between home and here? “Probably the weather,” he says. “I was used to it being very cold when the hockey season was going on. There’s a lot of snow in Sweden, but here it’s hot and you can wear shorts and T-shirts. That was a big difference for me to take. I got used to it and I’m not going to complain about it. A couple of road trips we see some snow and we hit the cold weather, so I get a bit of both out here. It’s nice.” “I love everything about Arizona and I like the team and I like the fans we have,” he

says. “We have a lot of fans and it has been pretty good lately at the games. I’m just happy to be a part of the organization here.” In addition to his career in the NHL, he recently played for the Swedish Olympic hockey team this past winter. “They selected me,” he says. “It was a great experience to go over to Russia to play, but it was kinda a weird experience for me because I didn’t play that much, but it was fun to be a part of the team and get a silver medal.” His selection to that team must have been a no-brainer for the selection

committee. With incredible stats in the NHL and being named as a contender for one of hockey’s biggest awards at just 23, Ekman-Larsson clearly has a bright future in the sport. “It’s fun being talked about for the Norris Trophy,” he admits. “It’s a big award for D-men. That’s a goal I have—to win it someday. I don’t know if I’ll win it this year, or two years from now, but I would love to win it. That is my goal.”

Life Off the Ice So what does a young, single hockey player do when he’s not on the ice? First and foremost, he makes sure he’s ready for every game. “We play a lot of games so we don’t really have time to workout,” he says. “That’s what the off-season is for, conditioning so you’re ready when the season starts and you don’t get hurt. Once in a while we get to workout, but always after

DECEMBER 2014 |

SS_52_55OliverFeature_Dec14.indd 55

55

games we do a short workout. We try to do something after every game or before every practice. I go back to Sweden and I workout over there and start to prepare myself so I can have a good season over here.” And as for that Arizona weather he enjoys? He admits he doesn’t have much time for hiking, but he does love to golf and has been known to hang out at the pool from time to time. “I also play some Xbox once in a while,” he says. “That’s about it, we don’t get much free time.” After buying a place in Troon North last year (“It’s nice a quiet up there,” he says), Ekman-Larsson has enjoyed the Scottsdale lifestyle, especially the food. Though he misses Swedish food and says there is nowhere local to find it, his favorite choice for a meal out would have to be a good steak and maybe some fries, naming Ocean Club and Mastro’s as two favorite places to dine. Those meals out are likely with teammates and friends, as he says he doesn’t have much time for dating right now. “I’m just trying to stay focused on hockey right now,” he says. “If I find someone nice, I do, but I don’t really have time for that right now. I think everybody wants to settle down and I would love to have a family and kids, but I think I have to wait a little bit longer. A couple more years and then I’m ready for that.” Though his home country didn’t have football and basketball, Ekman-Larsson has been following the Arizona Cardinals and Phoenix Suns, and enjoys watching the other local teams. To pass the time on trips around the country for games, he says he listens to music and watches a lot of movies, and his favorite in the latter category might surprise you. “The Blind Side,” he says. “That’s a really good movie. It’s true—that’s probably why I like it.” When asked if he enjoys movies about his own sport like Miracle, he says “that one is pretty good, too, but I’d pick The Blind Side over it,” admitting that it’s nice to think about something other than hockey from time to time. A movie about a young kid who makes it big in professional sports? It’s easy to see how he might relate.

eady to raise a glass? If so, we have the perfect place to do so—the new Lawrence Dunham Vineyards Wine Gallery tasting room in Downtown Scottsdale. Recently opened, the locale offers a chance to taste the wines from Arizona’s Lawrence Dunham Vineyards—without leaving the city. “We chose the title ‘Wine Gallery’ for our downtown retail destination because it illustrates our goal of wanting to showcase the artistry of our winemaking and grape-growing process, while also providing a unique venue for Arizona artists and craftspeople to be discovered,” explains Peggy Fiandaca, who co-owns the winery and the gallery with winemaker, grower and co-owner Curt Dunham. “We’ve wanted to bring the essence of our vineyard in the Chiricahua Mountain foothills of Cochise County to Scottsdale for some time now, and are finally ready to pop the cork on a long-awaited dream.” Since their first harvest in 2009, the pair have earned rave reviews from Wine Spectator, as well as praise both locally and nationally.

EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

Looking great may be easier than you think. “I’d really love to do something to improve my face and figure, but I”m afraid of the pain, the post operative nausea and of course the cost. Isn’t there a way that I can enhance my appearance without all the hassles of a major production?” The answer is a resounding YES! Dr Andrew Wolin has found a great way to maximize the safety of facial, breast and body procedures while minimizing the pain and the cost. By utilizing an enhanced form of local anesthesia as well as sedation by specialists in ambulatory anesthesia, procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lifts, facelifts, rhinoplasties and liposuction can be done under a quick enhanced form of anesthesia and patients are be able to walk to their cars and go home after the procedure without nausea and pain. Part of the miraculous process is the use of a long acting local anesthetic at the conclusion of the procedure to give a 48 hour period of pain relief…no narcotic…no nausea. PRE OP

Make Sure People Don’t Quack Up Laughing At Your Lips!

Dr. Rochlin is well known for her natural and subtly sexy injections, especially her lip augmentations.

2 great ways to fuller, more natural looking lips! WITH JUVEDERM

LIP IMPLANT

The most popular method of lip augmentation involves the injection of a soft tissue filler to plump the lips. This procedure is done with topical or local anesthesia to ensure comfort. The filler is placed along the lip lines, with extra care taken to preserve a natural appearance. Injections are placed to augment the upper lip, lower lip and Cupid’s bow.

Soft, solid silicone naturally contoured implant with a smooth, non-porous surface. Cannot rupture or deflate and may be removed at any time. Corresponds to the dimensions of the lip. Available in a variety of diameters and lengths to accommodate the uniqueness of each person’s lip characteristics, tapering at both ends to conform naturally to the normal lip.

out You came in fifth place and then toured with them… Yes, the top five are touring. The fans and the venues are unbelievable—you couldn’t ask for anything more. But sleeping on a bus, being in a different city every night, that’s kind of a grind. How long is the tour? Two-and-a-half months, 55 cities. Then I’m in Phoenix.

HUMOR WITH ROCKY LAPORTE The comedian talks life, comedy, touring—and leaves us with a joke

The first time you tried stand-up comdey you were: Twenty-nine. I was always a screwball in school and getting in trouble and being a goof. One day I was delivering furniture to a store and the lady asked me why I didn’t do comedy for a living. I don’t know why it never hit me that I should do comedy, that’s how dumb I was. I always watched comedy as a kid. What drew you to stand-up? I made a call that very night to open mic places. It was 1988 in Chicago. And I found one that night and I went in and I did it, and it went really well. The guy asked me how long I’d been doing it and I said, “About 15 minutes.” He asked me if I wanted to come back that weekend, and it just kind of took off from there.

What’s your favorite comedy project thus far? When I did The Tonight Show with Jay Leno I got a standing ovation, and that was a real big kick for me. And, my half hour comedy special was fun. So was when I went to Iraq with Drew Carrey to entertain the troops. Also, I had a couple parts in movies with Tim Allen and that was fun, and a guest spot on Cheers was kinda neat.

ocky LaPorte has been busy. When we spoke with him on the phone, he was in the middle of a 55-city tour for NBC’s Last Comic Standing. When that wraps up, he’ll head here, one of his favorite locales, for five nights of shows at High Street’s Rick Bronson’s—House of Comedy. The shows will kick off with a special New Year’s Eve performance—the perfect way to ring in the New Year.

What was it like to perform on NBC’s Last Comic Standing? It was kinda like a roller coaster ride—exciting and scary all at the same time. I think they were getting about six million viewers a week. That’s a big stage to mess up on, you know? But it went well and I was really happy.

What can we expect you to talk about during your New Year’s Eve performance? I talk a little bit about everything. A lot about relatable stuff, like relationships, goofy people in the airports, day-to-day stuff. And I love Arizona, I used to come down there and perform a lot. So, I’m excited to come back. Any wishes for the New Year? Probably the same as everyone—I’m getting fatter! Can you leave us with a joke? I said last year that my New Year’s resolution was that I’m not going to eat elk, and I did it for a whole year. That’s hard to do! I got that kind of willpower. Catch LaPorte at Rick Bronson’s—House of Comedy on High Street from Dec. 31-Jan. 4. 5350 E. High St., Ste. 105, Phoenix; 480.420.3553; www.az.houseofcomedy. net. cuisine WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A CHEF?

As a child growing up in France, cooking with my father. I remember often going to school hungry. We didn’t go out, so you learned to cook at home, and like a lot of chefs, I believe that I’m still drawn to food on a very primal level. YOU HAVE A LOT OF CELEBRITY FRIENDS. WHO IS THE ONE PERSON YOU WERE MOST EXCITED OR NERVOUS TO COOK FOR?

President Ronald Reagan. There were a tremendous amount of security concerns and the FBI and Secret Service were in my kitchen for a week prior to the event. They actually employed a team of official tasters and testers for things you could only imagine in a movie, like chemical poisoning! TALK ABOUT THE FOOD YOU COOK NOW… HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE IT?

Traditional French cuisine combined with some elements of fusion. YOU ALSO TEACH AT THE ARIZONA CULINARY INSTITUTE. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU PASS ALONG TO YOUR STUDENTS?

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Chef JeanMarie Rigollet, instructor at the Arizona Culinary Institute BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

If you’re really going to devote your life to becoming a chef, there’s definitely a wonderful sense of participation and community, but that also means that during weekends and holidays, weddings, and special events, you’re working, and not always available, so it’s a sacrifice you have to be willing to make. ANY COOKING TIP YOU CAN SHARE?

Do your research first, and invest in some good equipment. Then, don’t be afraid to fail—and try again. Invite your friends over—it’s a good way to get some honest feedback. And if they complain too much, don’t invite them again! (Laughs.) Experience Rigollet’s students’ cooking at Du Jour Restaurant at the Arizona Culinary Institute, 10585 N. 114th St., Ste. 401, Scottsdale; 480.603.1066 (reservations required); www.azculinary.edu.

RING IN THE NEW YEAR The Ring of Fire is sweet, yet spicy BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

T

he Standard is setting a new standard for drinks that are sweet, but spicy. Case in point: the Ring of Fire ($8). Made with Tyku Sake, agave, lemon juice, Royal Combier and jalapeños, it’s subtle, yet refreshing. “The inspiration for this drink was the return of patio weather,” explains Billy Sims, The Standard’s managing partner. “We wanted something refreshing, not too sweet, yet edgy enough to spice things up.” The jalapeños are subtle, but add a touch of spiciness that makes the drink different than your typical fare. Wondering what to pair it with? The restaurant’s menu offers a selection of fresh-made American dishes, from salads to burgers to seafood. And this drink, notes Sims, pairs perfectly with the Ahi Tuna Sandwich ($15). A delicious combo, indeed. The Standard is open for lunch and dinner daily, and happy hour is 4-7 p.m. daily. 10050 N. t stands over two feet tall, an elegant and graceful testament to both the art of glassware and the company’s commitment to wine enthusiasts. It’s the Amadeo Double Magnum Decanter created by Riedel, the 300-year-old, family-owned company known for its glassware for wine enthusiasts. This decanter is the largest and most expensive piece ever produced by the company, and is the quintessential statement-making entertaining piece for a wine lover, collector, or home decorator. The piece is like no other. Created by Maximilian Riedel, 11th-generation glassmaker and Riedel Crystal president and CEO, it is completely mouth-blown, and each one requires three master glassmakers and several days to create—which is why the company will only offer 100 of them for sale each year. “As a family, we are constantly trying to push the boundaries of luxury wine glassware and dream up the next big object of desire,” Riedel himself explains. “We are very proud to have created such a lofty decanter while still maintaining the luxuriously thin crystal Riedel is known for. The Amadeo Double Magnum is a wine masterpiece unlike any other.” The design is simple, yet makes a statement. With a sleek stripe of imperial red outlined by thin black borders, the piece offers just a hint of striking elegance that makes it not only a functional “wine tool,” but a décor piece in its own right. The Amadeo Double Magnum is designed to decant three litre bottles of wine, making it perfect for serving those rare and collectible bottles that are usually reserved for special occasions. The Amadeo Double Magnum Decanter is $2,000 and is available at www.riedel.com.

A HAWAIIAN PARADISE No matter your vacation style, O’ahu offers the perfect getaway for all BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

A

s the airplane’s wheels hit the runway, I stole a glance out the window. Hawaii. My breath caught in my throat. Living in Scottsdale, you can become jaded regarding warm weatherlocales. Palm trees? Yep, in my backyard. Gorgeous resorts? Got those in abundance. But this, this was markedly different. This was Hawaii, where the palm trees set near beaches, with their endless ocean backdrops, announced a different experience altogether. My first stop was the Hilton Hawaiian Village hotel (www.hiltonhawaiinvillage.com), located in Honolulu. It offered lush vegetation; a sweeping, pristine beach; endless ocean views; and everything you think a Hawaiian resort should have—gorgeous rooms; great water experiences; friendly service; fresh and tasty food; and, oh yes, a top-notch spa (try the Lomi Lomi massage!). Next up: Spending a few days exploring this stunningly beautiful island, with all of its picturesque ocean panoramas, white sand beaches, lush green landscapes,

and everything from modern and luxurious areas to easygoing beach towns. The island of O’ahu encompasses five main areas—Honolulu (which includes Waikiki), Windward Coast, North Shore, Leeward Coast, and Central O’ahu–and I had the chance to explore them all.

Must-See Stops If you’re wondering what to do on O’ahu, the answer is that there’s pretty much everything you can think of. From laying on the beach to water sports, and golf or shopping to visiting historical sites, there’s something for everyone. If you like the beach, head to the North Shore. The beaches are plentiful, offering expanses of white sand and gorgeous blue water. In the winter, these beaches also host the world’s premier surfing opportunities and competitions. During the other months, the water is calm and perfect for a relaxing swim. You can also take surf lessons at various island locales, fish, snorkel, scuba, go whale watching, and more. If you like the ocean and want to get up-close with the wildlife, make sure to take the Deluxe Wildlife Charter Tour with Wild Side Specialty Tours (www. sailhawaii.com). Run by two marine biologists, you’ll head out on a catamaran to snorkel with wild dolphins, tropical fish, sea turtles, and more. When you’re ready for a break from the water, there are plenty of sights to see. Take a factory tour of the famous Kamaka Ukelele factory (www.kamakahawaii.com), one of O’ahu’s premier ‘ukulele factories. There’s also the Polynesian Cultural Center (www.polynesia.com), where you’ll visit six Pacific cultures, and can experience a traditional Hawaiian lū’au. Another must-stop is at Pearl Harbor (www.pacifichistoricparks.org). The USS Arizona Memorial is built over the sunken wreckage of the USS Arizona, which was bombed on Dec. 7, 1941 during World War II. There are museums, narrative tours, and the memorial itself. Plan to set aside a day to spend exploring Kualoa Ranch (www.kualoa.

com), a 4,000-acre working cattle ranch that offers everything from horseback riding and ATV tours, to jungle expeditions and a private beach, to a tour of all of the ranch’s locations that have been used in movies (Jurassic Park and 50 First Dates, anyone?). Of course, there are also plenty of beach towns, as well as shopping destinations, to explore, as well as hiking (head to Diamond Head for a great hike), and more than two dozen golf courses.

Where to Stay

The Food The food options are plentiful on O’ahu, from roadside farmer’s markets and food trucks (those shrimp trucks you see? Stop and try a plate!) to top-notch epicurean destinations by celebrity chefs such as Roy Yamaguchi, Ed Kenney, Nobu Matsuhisa, Masaharu Morimoto, and more. You’ll find a multitude of cuisines, from local Hawaiian favorites to options such as Thai, Japanese, Chinese and Italian. I was there during the Hawai’i Food & Wine Festival (www.hawaiifoodandwinefestival), typically held in early September, which is a multi-day celebration of food and drinks, with daily activities, dinners, and events. If you love to explore culinary treats, definitely plan your trip around this yearly experience.

If you’re heading to O’ahu during another time of the year, there are various other special festivals and events, as well. Check www.visit-oahu.com for more information.

The Nightlife While a stroll on the moonlit beach should be on your list, if you want a little more out-and-about, there are plenty of hotspots. There are bars offering craft drinks, such as the laidback yet hip The Manifest (www.manifesthawaii.com) and The Bevy (www.bevybar.com), and you can try local craft beer at Honolulu Beerworks (trust me, pair it with their DECEMBER 2014 |

In addition to the Hilton Hawaiian Village, there are many other hotels and resorts to check out, depending on what you’re looking for. While the Hilton Hawaiian Village offers a tropical Hawaiian feel and walk-on beachfront access, The Modern Honolulu (www.themodernhonolulu.com) is very contemporary/cosmopolitan chic. It, too, offers sweeping ocean and city views, and the beach is just a very brief walk away. Other options in Honolulu include the Sheraton Waikiki (www.sheraton-waikiki.com) and the Outrigger Hotel & Resorts (www. outriggerreef-onthebeach.com). If you want to stay in Ko Olina, there’s Aulani, Disney Resort & Spa, which is perfect for families (www.resorts.disney.go.com/aulani-hawaiian-resort). O’ahu. If you’re looking for paradise, it’s here. Whether you want a vacation that’s relaxing or active, romantic or family-oriented, or a girlfriend’s trip, it’s the perfect getaway. ast year, New Zealand pop star Lorde reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Royals,” a song about rejecting the trappings of materialism. While I love a good debate on the merits of wealth accumulation and excess, there are times when too much of a good thing is outrageously wonderful. Exhibit A: the RC F, a fantastic new car from Lexus. It’s one of the world’s most luxurious and quickest two-door coupes, going from zero to 60 mph in a Hellfire missile time of four seconds. It surely must be classified as an absurdity of consumption. With a 467-horsepower naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 under the domed hood, it is a two-passenger high-performance coupe with a backseat only suitable for

adolescents or very small adults. All of that horsepower is backed up by a close-ratio eight-speed automatic transmission. For the record, Lexus offers a more benign version of the coupe (simply called RC), which is powered by a 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6, priced at $20,000 less. But to the extent that you can afford it, we recommend opting for the F version; it’s designed to ignite your passion for performance. Lexus had both vehicles available for high-performance test-driving at NOLA Motorsports Park in New Orleans, La. I’ll admit, I didn’t bother driving the subordinate on the track. The RC F is the most powerful Lexus V-8 performance car ever. It’s a sight to behold, with a striking version of the RC body outfitted with wider wheels and tires, an active rear wing, air scoops, cooling ducts, and available carbon-fiber body components. Out back, RC F features functional stacked exhaust tailpipes, making it even more distinctive. Donning my racing helmet, I slipped behind the wheel and was greeted by a stunningly beautiful cabin. Flipping the Dynamic Integrated Management switch that enables average drivers to approach limits previously attainable only by professionals, I pushed the go button and stomped the accelerator. With a jolt to the spine, I was rewarded with an engine roar and spinning tires—immediate performance. And out on the open road, RC F is one of very few vehicles that can cloak supercar dynamics with the rewarding comfort, style and luxury that are hallmarks of the Lexus brand. So Lexus has built us a car that satisfies our most carnal desire for excess while manipulating our selfish desire for power, but as Lorde sings in “Royals,” “Let me live that fantasy.” Automotive writer Jim Prueter is a spokesperson for AAA, and his auto reviews and travel stories appear nationally in print and online. “DESIGNER DRUG” PROSECUTIONS

5th Annual Stars of the Season

Written By Ashley D. Adams

PHOTOS BY HAUTE PHOTOGRAPHY

This event at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia included a performance by Grammy Award-winning rock band Linkin Park, a silent auction, and dinner. The event benefited Banner Children’s at Cardon Children’s Medical Center.

The Federal Analog Act, 21 U.S.C. § 813, is a section of the United States Controlled Substances Act passed in 1986 which allowed any chemical “substantially similar” to a controlled substance listed in Schedule I or II to be treated as if it were also listed in those schedules. These similar substances are often called designer drugs. A designer drug is a substance that has been synthetically created to mimic the effects of a controlled substance, but does not share the exact chemical structure of that substance. Section 802(32)(A) defines an analogue as a substances that (1) has a chemical structure substantially similar to a controlled substance and (2) that has, is intended to have, or is represented as having pharmacological effects substantially similar to a controlled substance. Manufacturers of designer drugs such spice and bath salts can be prosecuted under the Analog Act in certain circumstances.

Steve and Barbara Young

The government must prove that the product was “intended for human consumption.” Although there has been little case lase decided on this issue, it is likely that courts will look to the following: 1) Instructions, oral or written, provided with the item concerning its use;(2) Descriptive materials accompanying the item which explain or depict its use;(3) National and local advertising concerning its use;(4) The manner in which the item is displayed for sale.

Micheline and Bruce Etkin, DDS

Penalties and prison sentences pursuant to the Act can be severe, as the term depends on the quantity sold. If you have any issues, or questions regarding “Designer Drug” prosecutions, or otherwise need assistance in a criminal case, please contact Ashley D. Adams, PLC at 480.219.1366 or aadams@azwhitecollarcrime.com, www.azwhitecollarcrime.com. Ashley is a criminal defense attorney in Scottsdale and a former federal prosecutor.

growing trend in restaurant dining is farm-to-table dinners and menus. Many restaurants are making a big effort to ensure that the ingredients that they use in their dishes are organic, fresh, and locally sourced whenever possible. And what’s better than getting your ingredients from the local farmer’s market or the nearest grower? Growing them yourself. There are a number of restaurants that have started crafting their own ingredient gardens—some start as modest herb gardens, while others boast full-fledged gardens in which their staff receives an education on the origins of ingredients and sustainability, along with the pride of knowing that they have helped to cultivate the best ingredients for their diners. We have gathered a smattering of the local restaurants that are paving the way for this innovative dining experience.

food files El Chorro

True Food Kitchen Scottsdale Quarter

5550 E. Lincoln Drive, Scottsdale 480.948.5170; www.elchorro.com El Chorro’s rich Arizona history is enough to draw in diners, but there is a lot more to this iconic spot than its legendary former guests. El Chorro intends to meld together the past, present and future. The past is represented by the historical building, built in 1934 as a school for girls, and then three years later converted to a restaurant. The present is represented by the reinterpretation of that history onto your dinner plate, fusing the dishes that have remained favorites throughout the years with seasonal crop offerings that celebrate all that the Southwest has to offer. So what does that mean for the future? At present, the kitchen pulls ingredients from the on-site garden, located just outside of the kitchen. Almost all of the dishes on the menu feature at least one ingredient that was grown and cultivated on-site. Two such menu items are the Grapefruit Basil Martini and their Burrata Salad. Both are crafted using both basil and tomato from the restaurant garden.

15191 N. Scottsdale Rad, Scottsdale 480.265.4500; www.truefoodkitchen.com True Food Kitchen is all about offering the healthiest, freshest, and most nourishing foods to fuel your body. As you pass through the entry of the doors to the Scottsdale location, you might notice the herb garden, and while it may appear to be strictly ornamental, there is a functionality to the garden. While the garden’s harvest is not used in the dishes coming out of the kitchen, they are utilized in menu development on a daily basis. The gardens produce basil, rosemary and chili peppers—just to name a few. Menu development takes time, patience and perseverance. The availability of fresh herbs allows for the chefs to create dish after dish with as many tweaks as possible, ensuring that once that item is on the menu, the dish arrives to your table in phenomenal condition each and every time.

Lon’s at The Hermosa Inn 5532 N. Palo Cristi Road, Paradise Valley 602.955.7878; www.lons.com Lon’s at The Hermosa Inn is incredibly serious about its food. While most restaurants are focused on farm-to-table menus, Lon’s is far more focused on the farm portion of that equation. Executive Chef James Ducas’ day involves working on the property’s halfacre harvesting the crops, but he also spends a great deal of time using the garden as a training ground for his culinary team. The property garden boasts lettuce, pumpkins, arugula, basil, coriander, fennel, onions, peppermint, chilis, strawberries, English lavender, baby oak leaf, Bloomsdale spinach, mesclun, heirloom tomatoes, tomatillos, and various types of squash and melon– among many others. Some standout dishes that involve garden crops are the Beets & Ricotta Salad, the Shrimp Louie Salad, and the Tomato Mozzarella Salad. The overall success of these three are based on the freshness of the individual components. Knowing that most of the ingredients come from the garden, it’s easy to see why the dishes are so delightful. The freshness of the ingredients imparts a crisp and clean flavor that is incomparable to similar dishes in the Valley.

Last Drop at The Hermosa Inn 5532 N. Palo Cristi Road, Paradise Valley 602.955.7878; www.lastdropbar.com The passion that Lon’s has for locally sourced ingredients that guide the menu at the restaurant carry over to the cocktail menu at the Last Drop. The best drinks start with using the best libations, and the Last Drop sources the majority of their liquors from Arizona purveyors. On its own this would definitely make for a stellar cocktail, leaving one with feelings of state pride. What puts these cocktails over the edge though is the addition of the fresh garden elements. The citrus infusions are imparted from any one of the numerous citrus trees located on the property. Travis Nass, resident Last Drop mixologist, could certainly create a lively cocktail from a variety of ingredients, creates a majestic level of artistry when provided the perfect harvest of ingredients.

NAYA MEDITERRANEAN This Mediterranean spot brings an elevated elegance to what may seem to some as casual fare. The menu is a melding of Middle Eastern and Italian-style options. Entrées are large enough for sharing, and are priced very well for the size. You can’t go wrong with any of the traditional appetizers, and the Jenne’s Penne might just change the way you look at chicken. 8877 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.355.6600; www.nayaaz.com; $$ PAPRIKA MEDITERRANEAN BISTRO This restaurant recently reopened with a new menu, new staff, and new décor, though its owners are the same. It’s now also Uzbeck Russian Cuisine. The food is still kosher, and diners rave about the Chicken Kebob Plate, as well as the soups. Other menu options include Kepeshka Bread, Chicken Schawarma, and Beef Calzone/Samsa. Bring your appetite–the portions here are large! 7116 E. Mercer Lane, Scottsdale; 480.998.2559; $$

Stetson Dr., Scottsdale; 480.656.4197; www.barrioqueen.com; $$ FOGON–A MEXICAN EATERY Fogon, translated, means cooking with charcoal, and that is what this restaurant wants to ensure that its guests enjoy. There are custom grill stations located throughout the dining room so that meals can be cooked right in front of diners. The detail to culture translates through the food, as well as in the décor, with hand painted murals and oven fired Talavera tiles imported from just outside of Mexico City. Their fresh-made Guacamole Fresco is light and full of flavor, and pairs naturally with their Fajitas a la Parilla. 7001 N. Main St., Scottsdale; 480.945.4567; www.oldtowntortillafactory.com; $$ THE BLIND PIG | HOBE MEATS This clever little spot is home to a café, butcher shop and bar. Pop in and order some specialty cuts of meat and enjoy some impeccable dishes while you wait. The Short Rib Tacos are perfectly tender and hold just the right amount of spice, and the House Rice is an interesting

MODERN AMERICAN

RANCHO PINOT GRILL The exclusive use of seasonal and locally grown products has created an uncomplicated and satisfying menu that consistently receives rave reviews. While you may be familiar with dishes like their Ricotta Gnocchi or Braised Pork Shoulder, you may not be prepared for the extra side of “wow” that seems to accompany every dish. 6208 N. Scottsdale Road, Paradise Valley; 480.367.8030; www.ranchopinot.com; $$$ THE HERB BOX The Herb Box is an ever-evolving restaurant due in large part to the culinary vision of Chef Becky J. Windels. She finds inspiration from local farmers’ market offerings, as well as the challenge of product limitations. Looking for unique breakfast offerings? How about a Brussel Sprout Hash and Manchego Omelet? If you’re looking for sweet comfort, opt for the Red Velvet Pancakes. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
