THE ESSENCE OF SUMMER

A

s we have reached the midpoint of 2018 it’s now time to kick off our sandals and enjoy the lazy beach days and BBQs, alfresco dining and outdoor living. As New Yorkers can be a restless bunch, it’s also a time to get out of the city and head to the beach, mountains or Mediterranean islands. As we trade our suits for swimsuits, our focus is on our physique which was our theme for the July issue--Health and Wellness. This month we feature acclaimed vegan chef Matthew Kenney and well-known Dr. Amir Marashi, aka the Vagina Whisperer, as they embark on a groundbreaking plant-based product that integrates culinary art with medicine. Proving that you are what you eat, Matthew and Amir discuss how our health is a direct result of our diet and how we can improve our lives. In cases where diet alone is not enough, Dr. Marashi discusses new procedures and the wonders of modern medicine to improve areas that were once taboo to speak about and how he has greatly helped the lives of his patients. We also feature reality TV star and real estate personality Ryan Serhant—star of Million Dollar Listing NY and Sell it Like Serhant. As witty and charismatic in real life as he is on the show, Ryan can basically sell you anything—from women’s dresses and hot tubs to multimillion-dollar trophy properties around the world. For Ryan it’s all about the art of the deal.

Just like the city that doesn’t sleep, Ryan is always working on his next project. With two TV shows wrapping up, a new book launching this September and also heading up the #1 real estate team in the country, read on to hear what’s next for this powerhouse. Just like the sizzling-hot temps, so is our fashion editorial this month. From vibrant colorblocking fashion to summertime glam, this season is all about bringing fun back to fashion. Though heat and humidity can wreak havoc on our hair and makeup we share our favorite picks to beat the heat while keeping the frizz at bay and staying streak free. With summer fully underway we had travel on our agenda. This month we ventured around the world and highlighted Sydney, the Bahamas, the ruins of Guatemala, California, and more. Summer is also a wonderful time to explore the gastronomic side of New York with our extensive dining out section where we cover the city’s latest culinary gems and hotspots. With warm weather beckoning us outside we also featured the cultural side of NYC highlighting the next wave of artists to watch. Enjoy the simple pleasures of summer activities in the city or the shore to fill those long dog days and balmy summer eves.

ALL ABOUT YOUR SMILE By Simon W Rosenberg, dmd

Y

our Smile Reflects an Image of Who You Are -- To Those You Meet! When you smile naturally and are confident of the appearance of your teeth, that confidence and self-worth are noticed by those around you. If you hide your smile with your hand or behind your lips, you tell those you meet that you are hiding something. Let Your Smile Radiate All That Is Great About You! When you meet someone, and their smile is warm and pleasing, you naturally feel good being around them. You can be that person! If your teeth are discolored, there is professional dental bleaching. If they are rotated or crooked, they can be straightened with either Orthodontics or Veneers and Crowns using newer technology. There’s A Whole New World Of High Technology In Dentistry. If teeth need crowns or veneers, with CEREC Technology ceramic restorations are made in one visit in our office. Dental Lasers reduce or eliminate the need for local anesthesia for many “fillings.” They can be used to recontour soft tissue and can reduce a “Gummy Smile.” Grandparents May Have Needed Dentures,But Now There Are Options With Dental Implants. Dental Implants can be used to replace one, several or many missing teeth. Now with guided placement using digital low-dose CBCT scans and digital models of your mouth, the procedures are much faster and more comfortable than ever before.

Here are some things about your smile to think about. •Your smile is the 1st thing that people see. •You get only One chance to make a First Impression. •Unsightly teeth can turn anybody off. •During the summer, people get to see more of you. •Are you always confident that people are looking at your smile for the right reasons? •Your Smile says the Nicest Things about You!

T

op-producing and highly accomplished Manhattan real estate professional Gannon Forrester has recently brought his formidable talents to Warburg Realty, having found that he

and the 120-year-old legacy brokerage share the same business values and ethics, based in providing top-notch service while maintaining an impeccable reputation.

“No other firm is as synonymous with luxury, has roots as deep in the history of NYC, and maintains the same air of class as Warburg,” said Gannon. “That is what I have built my business on, providing the luxury of exceptional service with a genuine smile.” Warburg President Clelia W. Peters commented, “We are thoroughly delighted to welcome Gannon to the Warburg family. His terrific industry experience, positivity, and dedicated work ethic are a perfect fit with our firm’s principles.” Specializing in luxury condos, both sales and rentals, Gannon’s domain comprises of prime Manhattan neighborhoods including the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Union Square, Flatiron, Chelsea, and Gramercy. With his creative approach, affable manner, keen negotiation skills and expansive experience, he is the ideal guide, and knows New York’s condo market through and through. There is now total transparency in the vast majority of the NY real estate market. Thanks to technology and innovation, anyone can go on a computer, click a button, and find a home on one of the many online listing portals. However, it takes a true expert to successfully navigate and negotiate within the high-end property market. Clients shopping in this price range expect their broker to have their finger on the pulse of everything, not only the details of the property, but the best restaurants in the area, the new hotspots of the city, how interest rates and the stock market are impacting property value, and so much more.

RYAN SERHANT Conquers New York By HILLARY LATOS

R

yan Serhant is the ultimate deal maker. He has proven on reality tv that he can sell just about anything from multi million dollar apartments to hot tubs- it’s all about the approach. From his beginnings as an actor to running one of the top real estate teams in the competitive landscape of NYC realty, there is nothing that can stop the trajectory path of this charming and enigmatic dynamo. The Serhant Team which is led by Ryan was just named in the Wall Street Journal Real Trends report as the #1 team in New York, again, and #2 in the country. With two reality tv shows on Bravo, Million Dollar Listing NY and Sell It Like Serhant, as well as a new book coming out in September, Resident Magazine sits down with Ryan to talk about the secrets of his success and what’s next on the horizon.

What made you want to write a book? When I started in the real estate business 10 years ago, my parents said you are entering a field that is pretty crazy - sometimes it will be good to go back to reflect on your journey. I kept notes on a lot of deals and anytime I learned something I wrote it down, which eventually turned into this agent playbook. Over the years I built a team and handed them this guide, and then Sell It Like Serhant (the TV show) filming started last year. I decided at that point, since I have my agent playbook and I’m teaching people all around the country how to sell, that I should create a playbook for how to build a sales career and how to really sell anything. There is nothing out there like this; there are personality books that are like “this is how that person sells” and there are books to teach you how

to sell a banana, but there are no books that teach you how to build a long-lasting sales career as a sales person or how to build a great side hustle on top of your day job, and that is what this book is for. If you were to give a brief spiel about the secrets of selling, what would be your biggest takeaways? There are a lot of secrets, even though nothing is really a secret. I think that a lot of issues that sales people have to deal with are discipline and follow through. Sales people are a very strange breed, they are licensed or not licensed, and they just assume that their product should sell and there shouldn’t be that much work involved. Sales people need to practice and train the same way the best athletes do; there is spring training for baseball,

there is training camp for football, and these athletes get paid millions and millions of dollars to practice, practice, practice for short games, and yet people who sell never practice. It doesn’t make any sense to me. One of the big things that sales people need to do is create discipline and start habits that will make them highly successful in their profession. My book, Sell It Like Serhant: How to Sell More, Earn More, and Become the Ultimate Sales Machine, goes into how to do that and how to create work ethic even if you don’t think you have work ethic. A big part of it is starting with the relationship and not focusing on the sale. The people who are focused on the sales are like the saying “a watched pot never boils.” You can’t put water in a pot and then stare at it, that’s not how you do it. You have a conversation, you talk to people, get to know them and the product will become part of the conversation; people don’t like to be sold, they like to shop with friends and that’s what will happen. Aside from this, what are some of your other current projects? We just wrapped Sell It Like Serhant and the seventh season of Million Dollar Listing: New York is now premiering. I am doing a lot of personal investing in real estate and renovating projects of my own, which is fun, and I’m just growing the team. The Real Deal, which is the be all and end all for real estate in New York, just named my team number one.

What was the craziest moment you have had on Million Dollar Listing? Throughout the entirety of the Million Dollar Listing series - the craziest moment was shutting down Times Square and proposing to my wife and. Also having a camera crew follow us to Corfu to cover our wedding was crazy.

44 | resident.com

And this season there is a lot of deal craziness with a project in China, and everywhere else. There are crazy sellers, crazy buyers- it’s just so nuts, but it’s my life. When I watch it on TV, it’s just so amped up because it’s cut together so quickly, but then I’m like “wait a minute, that was my day, that’s what my life is like everyday.” How do you find balance? I don’t, I mix everything together. It would be too hard to try to live your life in a sequence of hours, where you go to work from these hours and you live your life in these hours; that seems unhealthy to me. I try to do everything all the time. I am always at work and I am always living my life and I talk to my wife ten times a day and I see her at night; I keep her posted with where and what I’m doing. She comes to client dinners with me, she’ll come to open houses with me even though she has her own job; that way it doesn’t feel like I get home and I’ve ignored her all day and now I have to pay attention to her, we’ve been talking all day. And by the time I get home, we’ve known exactly what’s been going on all day and now I just get to see her face. What has been your strangest fan experience? I had a guy stop in the middle of Broadway and Houston in his car and screamed, “You’re that guy!” And he got out and caused a car accident. That was the weirdest, most awkward, most uncomfortable experience of my life because then I couldn’t really go anywhere, what was I going to do, run? I had to take a photo with him as thousands of cars were piling up behind him; it was a disaster. How were you first discovered for Million Dollar Listing? I went to an open casting call at the Hudson Hotel with 3,000 real estate agents. Did you apply your techniques from your book to get the part? I hadn’t written the book yet, that was 2010. No, I

was just myself. When I first came to the city in 2006, I wanted to be an actor and had starred on an internet reality show called In Turn to become the next star of As the World Turns. It was on CBS.com, so I had been in a reality setting before, I knew what producers were looking for and I knew that I couldn’t bite my tongue because its reality TV, you have to say what’s on your mind, go hard and be real. When you studied acting, did you ever think you would become a reality TV star? No, nor did I ever think that I would be a real estate broker… in New York City of all places. What was the biggest deal you have ever closed? I sold an entire building, but the biggest deal I’ve done in the last year has been a three bedroom on Park Avenue that sold for $36 million. What would your dream property be to have as a listing? Something extremely expensive that sets a record and sells in one day, whatever that is, it’s my dream property. What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve ever encountered? Humans- people and greed; honestly the biggest challenge I’ve encountered every day is greed. That’s it. It’s people wanting more with no backing for it and a lot of my job is how to assure someone with a decision that I know is right for them and that I know if they don’t do it, it’s going to hurt them and that there’s going to be an “I told you so moment” in six months. But how do you get around that with somebody that is greedy? It’s really hard; it’s the toughest challenge you have in New York. Everyone is always looking for something bigger and better. Which is okay, I’m okay with that, I’m just not ok with it when it hurts you. I’m greedy for success, I’m greedy in the sense of the word, I want more and to do better for myself, I want a great family.

I want more, more, more, more, but at the same time I wouldn’t sacrifice anything for greed, if that makes sense; and a lot of New Yorkers will. Which high profile client have you worked with that surprised you the most? Everyone that I have worked with for the most part is super nice, to be honest. We recently worked with Jason Biggs from American Pie and his wife Jenny Mollen, they surprised me with how funny they actually are in real life, sometimes you see comedians and actors who are one way on TV or in movies and then a different way in real life; they are truly hilarious people. What’s your favorite neighborhood in New York? Right now, I would say Manhattan. I would say SOHO because I work there and I live there, but we are soon going to be moving to Brooklyn and there are a lot of places in Brooklyn that I like as well. And you’re about to start your own brokerage in Brooklyn too? No, I have a very large team, and so I bought a brokerage last year and absorbed them into my team and now they run my Brooklyn office. Where do you think there is hidden value in the city? I would say Greenpoint, Downtown Brooklyn, and Red Hook. What do love most about living in New York City since you first arrived? The people and how intellectually curious everybody is. You can meet 100 people a day in New York City and not a single one of them will do the same thing as the one before- I think that is really unique.

48 | resident.com

There are a lot of cities in this country that are specialized or people have one type of job, whether it’s finance or tech, or steel, etc. New York City is filled with people who are amazing and just trying to work their butts off from all over the world and I think that’s pretty incredible. What are some of your favorite places around the city? There is this really new Greek bakery in Tribeca that is run by the team who own the restaurant, The Greek, which is just south of Canal Street on Greenwich. My wife is Greek, so we spend a lot of time at both of those places. There is also a restaurant on Spring Street and Renwick called Giorgione, which is a great place that not a whole lot of people know about, but we love going there. We don’t really drink, so we don’t go to a lot of bars. A big thing for us is fitness and we go to the DogPound Gym on Renwick and Canal. What are some of your summer plans? Once we finish filming, just to work, spend time with my wife and we’ll go to Greece eventually as well. Are there any spoiler alerts? I don’t know, there are so much in this season, honestly, things get crazy, crazier than they have ever gotten in the last seven seasons. It’s a very intense season and a lot happens. How is Sell It Like Serhant Different from Million Dollar Listing? It’s a completely opposite show from Million Dollar Listing, it wasn’t real estate at all. It was me going and helping people save their jobs, sales people who were about to get fired and going in and teaching them to sell whatever it is they sell. The

episodes ran the gamut. I helped a girl who sold hot tubs, a guy who sold kitchen cabinets, somebody who sold dresses in New Jersey, and a woman who sold body lotion in Long Island. What was your favorite? I would say the hot tubs were fun, because that was so different for me, I was a fish out of water. It was tricky; like everything else, there is a lot of products that people can use but a hot tub is a luxury product that no one needs, no one is going to die tomorrow if they don’t have a hot tub; it’s purely a luxury product. In my world, someone might not need that 36 million dollar apartment, but they need a place to live, everyone needs a home, they all want a place to live. In New York City, everyone wants a nice home and they’re expensive. So selling something that is purely a luxury item and how to show that, and excite people about it to get them to buy one is another story. That episode was probably the one that I will remember the most. What is the biggest life lesson you’ve learned from all of your experiences, from the time you began this journey? There’s a quote by a famous jazz musician, who was on his death bed and was asked through thick and through thin, the ups and downs of your career, and through love and lost, a hit record and then a bad record- how did you stick through it all, keep motivated, have a good attitude and a smile on your face, how did you do it all? And he said ‘If you take care of the music, the music will take care of you.’ That is something that I have really learned, that if you take care of the work, and you do the work, the work will take care of you.

DR. AMIR MARASHI The Vagina Whisperer By CALLIE WOOD

D

ream of having the perfect vagina? Dreams become reality with Dr. Amir Marashi, the “vagina whisperer”aka “Vagialangello”. A world-renowned OB-GYN, Dr. Marashi has performed thousands of surgeries across multiple countries. There seems to be nothing he cannot fix: size, shape, color, tightness, moisture. He has even recreated hymen to prove a bride’s virginity and performed clitoral reconstructions for victims of mutilation. His nickname of the “vagina whisperer” was first coined while assisting earthquake victims in Haiti. Although medical supplies were limited, Dr. Marashi was able to diagnose several patients simply by a physical exam. Later while in the operating room, one of surrounding nurses made the comment about Dr. Marashi’s abilities by using the term vagina whisperer, and the nickname stuck. After finishing Medical school in Tehran, Iran and doing research in Stanford, California, Dr Marashi did a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at New York Methodist Hospital. Since then he has won numerous awards in his field, including the Healers Hall of Fame Award and Humanitarian Award from the New York Methodist Hospital. He is also the founder of the International Obstetricians and Gynecologists Foundation. Dr Marashi is double Board certified by both American College of ObGyn and Surgery. Dr. Marashi says that he is motivated by the improvement he brings to a woman’s life, health, and happiness. While half of his procedures are

52 | resident.com

for functional purposes, the other half are cosmetic. Marashi specializes in several areas including laser rejuvenation, labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, vaginal reconstruction, clitoral hood reduction, and even G-spot amplification. Whatever the procedure, Dr. Marashi helps every one of his patients become more confident in themselves and their downstairs! One of the most popular procedures is the noninvasive and painless FemiLift Laser Vaginal Tightening treatment which rejuvenates vaginal lining, increasing thickness of vaginal walls. Another procedure is surgical vaginal rejuvenation which is a reconstructive vaginoplasty that restores the muscle tone and the esthetics of the vagina, by removing excess tissues and tightening the supportive structures, in effort either to reduce or to reverse the effects of aging and childbearing. Dr Marashi also has his methods to improve orgasms, by injections, laser, and the Orgasm Cream he created and formulated himself. He regularly hosts national and international physicians who follow him to learn his techniques. Dr Marashi recently taught a fellowship in cosmetic gynecology in Dubai, and he is the first doctor in the US who hosts an official Cosmetic Gynecology rotation for ObGyn residents. The other half of his practice is dedicated to pelvic pain and Endometriosis. He has helped countless patients overcome the painful symptoms that come with endometriosis or uterine fibroids by early diagnosis and the right treatment.

Celebrities have been the original trail blazers for giving support to, and even receiving, these procedures. As the surrounding discussion becomes less taboo, the popularity of the procedures increases in return. Women are becoming more confident in the choices they make regarding their bodies. Dr. Marashi does warn patients, especially younger ones that may have been swayed by the influence of socialites and TV stars, that cosmetic procedures are no necessity. Patients are encouraged to make the decision for themselves, not because of outside pressures. Online reviews continue to praise the doctor and his staff. Countless reviews exclaim the exceptional bedside manners of Marashi and the comfortable atmosphere of his office. One review writes, “Dr. Marashi is one of the best medical professionals that I have ever come across. He is very professional and thorough. He makes sure that you are comfortable and don’t have any worries prior to leaving his office and makes himself accessible to his patients.” Dr. Marashi says that being thanked by his patients is all the inspiration he needs to continue his path of extraordinary work. He is passionate about increasing women’s’ quality of health and plans to continue to do so for years to come.

CHEF MATTHEW KENNEY A Vegan Super Star By HALEY LAVIN

W

orld leading plant-based Chef Matthew Kenney is shaping the vegan and nutrition world, one plate at a time. Chef Kenney is all about creating food that tastes good, but above all, creating food that makes people feel good. He is a firm believer that chefs are the doctors of the future, marrying wellness and the culinary art. Owner of 15 restaurants and counting spread across five continents; Chef Kenney is serving up 100 percent vegan food at his establishments. Many people believe that a plant-based diet means giving something up or missing something, but really the transition from a meat diet to a plant diet is just changing the center of the plate to something plantbased. Chef Kenney’s cuisine and the success of his restaurants have proven that vegan food is just as, if not more delicious and appealing as nonplant-based meals. You can still enjoy dining and go out without eating meat and dairy; being vegan does not mean you have to give up on guilty pleasures such as pizza and or ice cream. Part of the fear people have of a plant-based diet is the unknown; plant-based diet and veganism are still very much new, and vegan cuisine is still growing and developing. Plant-based cuisine is the future of the culinary world. Chef Kenney’s journey to a vegan lifestyle was “the most fun he ever had eating in his life.” By giving

up meat and dairy, people will gain a physical sense of wellbeing. Becoming vegan does not happen overnight, Chef Kenney’s transition was “slow and gradual at first and then all at once.” After his switch to a plant-based diet, Chef Kenney felt better both internally and externally, “once you rid your body of processed ingredients, meat, and dairy, you will digest, sleep and recover better and just feel better about yourself in general.”

Chef Kenney is currently teaming up with Dr. Marashi to create a line of Nutrition Bars called Ntidote that are medically good for you. They realized that what is currently out there has too much sugar, tastes bad, or is not medically or scientifically good for you. The two men met in Miami at a talk Chef Kenney was giving about wellness and the part in which food played. Intrigued, Dr. Marashi approached Chef Kenney afterward, and after talking they shared a mutual understanding of the importance of internal health and what we put in our bodies. The two men have great chemistry and hit it off quickly; their ideas and energy bounce off one another. Their vision for the nutrition bars is to provide something that will help people who need a quick meal replacement, snack or some sort of access to nutrition that still tastes good. There should not have to be a separation between nutrition, wellness,

and the medical field, but rather an ongoing harmonious dialogue. Chefs have the power to create food that makes people feel good, while doctors can help people stay well. While Dr. Marashi provided the list of ingredients for the bar, Chef Kenney put his spin on it to make it tasty and palatable. After researching the market and ingredients, Dr. Marashi wanted to create 4 different versions of nutrition bars with different goals. One is a weight loss bar to meet the challenge of losing weight in 30 days. Every morning this would replace breakfast along with a plant based beverage- which will improve weight management along with your internal ph. The second is the Relax bar, which will include CBD oil which is meant for people who have a lot of anxiety, back pain, or simply intended to relax. A lot of Dr. Marashi’s endometriosis patients have been using CBD oil and he saw how much it is helping them. This will be a game changer for people who are living with chronic pain. The third one is the aphrodisiac bar which will contain ingredients that are good for men and women to increase their stamina. The fourth bar will be the awake/ alert bar which will have matcha and other natural plant based stimulant ingredients for people who don’t want to drink caffeine.

NERAI Greek at its Best By CONSTANCE KENNEDY Photo By Samira Bouaou

G

uests entering Nerai in Midtown East are transported to feel like they’re worlds away on a gorgeous Greek island without the need for a passport. The contemporary Greek restaurant offers a unique twist on traditional Greek cuisine in a bright and airy setting with a lively bar. Situated on East 54th Street between Park and Madison, the restaurant’s elegantly appointed dining room is blanketed in white. The minimalistic design is indicative of the beaches in Greece, where not much else is needed to capture its beauty except a few beams of sunshine dancing off the blue ocean. You can feel that connection here as well in the main dining room, along with Wine Library and The Bar Room. Cava Nerai is the stone wine cellar in the lower level of Nerai, where guests can host intimate private events. You choose your occasion, then choose

your wines with Wine Director Michael Coll, then curate a well-crafted and paired menu from Executive Chef Moshe Grundman. Start your meal with traditional pikilia dips and a Horiatiki salad. Then choose from a fine selection of fresh fish dishes like Kakavia, a poached Mediterranean stone bass that’s lighter than air, simmered in a black pepper and lemon consommé and fresh vegetables. If you are feeling more

carnivorous, try the Paidakia sti Skara - perfectly cooked lamb chop. You also can’t go wrong with the short rib orzo pasta with feta and tomatoes – a hearty and aromatic dish. Finally, end with fresh fruit and Greek yogurt or white chocolate mousse and Greek coffee. We can’t forget the theater goers, who will be delighted to hear that Nerai has an affordable 3-course weekend pre and post theater menu for

$49. The new menu is offered every Friday and Saturday from 5pm-6pm and from 9pm-10:30pm. Grundman has designed each course carefully with the Mediterranean in mind. Nothing overly heavy here, just the right portions so you’ll leave feeling satisfied, rather than stuffed. Owner Spiro Menegatos knows the importance of such a spot in Midtown. “My father is in the food industry and Constantine’s family is also in

the restaurant business, so it’s already in our background,” Spiro explains. “We felt there was a gap in the Greek dining space that we could fill. Something between going to Grandma’s and a fine dining experience.”

listening to Michael Coll talk about wines and you will feel satiated by the inventive foods created by Chef Grundman. There’s no better way to experience the feeling of Greece without actually being there.

To that end, another noteworthy takeaway from Nerai has got to be the service. The warmest staff in Manhattan sets Nerai apart from all of the other Greek restaurants in the city. You’ll feel inspired

DEMARCHELIER Authentic French Cuisine with a Modern Art Ambience By ANN GRENIER

N

ot only is French born Eric Demarchelier a well-known painter, but he is also the owner of one of the most iconic Upper East Side restaurants, authentic French Bistro Demarchelier’s, celebrating its 25 year anniversary this 2017. Talent runs in the Demarchelier family. Brother Patrick Demarchelier is a world renown fashion photographer while Eric Demarchelier has received acclaim as a painter. Eric’s artistic style encompasses figurative, geometric abstraction and abstract expressionism, as well as landscape and portrait painting. Born and raised in Normandy, French restaurant owner Eric Demarchelier has lived in New York since 1977, the same year he opened the very first location of his eponymous restaurant. After closing

70 | resident.com

the original location on Lexington Avenue, Demarchelier re-opened the restaurant in 1992 on 86th street and his regular customers followed. The restaurant boasts a colorful and cozy environment, with artwork by Eric Demarchelier himself on the walls. He began painting in the 1990s and has been rotating the art exhibited in the restaurant every year since then. Apart from the rotating artwork, Demarchelier has remained consistent throughout the years, both in terms of ambiance and menu, though part of the responsibility of running the restaurant has been pledged to his daughter Emily Demarchelier. More bourgeois than bohemian, Demarchelier’s cheerfully noisy, cozy quarters are home to a menu

of mainly familiar hits from French bistro fare, like standout French onion soup and briny moules mariniere au vin blanc, in a cream-enriched broth. Main courses also hew to the classics; duck confit is served over a hearty mix of tomato- and tarragonscented flageolets. For pure French luxe, sample the Sole Meuniere. Flour-dredged and pan-fried in butter, this tender fillet is accompanied by a grilled lemon half and fat wedges of boiled potato, tossed in plenty of butter and chives.

You cannot go wrong with the crab and artichoke dip or mama’s meatballs either. For salads, they have classics with a twist such as kale Caesar, arugula, summer asparagus and sugar snaps as well as the signature station salad, which includes baby spinach, beets, gorgonzola, walnuts, granny smith apples and house vinaigrette. Don’t forget to try a baked

75 MAIN RESTAURANT Leading the Southampton’s Dining and Social Scene By W.A. MULLER

5 Main continues its reign as one of the highly coveted restaurant locations in Southampton’s social circuit. Diners flock to the Main Street hotspot year-round as tables fill with a devoted. Restaurateur Zach Erdem’s 75 Main has been the go-to spot for celebs including Former Vice President Joe Biden, LA Reid, Alex Rodriguez, Barbara Walters and many more. 75 Main’s renewed interior has a euro-chic allwhite design that showcases gallery-style artwork by Raphael Mazzucco. All new walnut colored furnishing brightens the front of house dining room, but for more intimate affairs, white linens create a more sophisticated dining experience in the back of house. Large doors open the front of house to the streets of Southampton where guests can dine al-fresco under the new bright yellow awning. Fresh flowers and green trees surround the outdoor patio tables adding to the restaurant’s longstanding charm. Those who reserve a seat at 75 Main will appreciate the diverse menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner with Mediterranean, Italian, and Asian influences.

This summer 75 Main introduces sushi to the menu created by Master Chef Joseph Kim. Debuting his culinary creations in the Hamptons for the first time at 75 Main, Pastry Chef Gursel Aydin, will cook up everything from restaurant favorites to masterfully creative pastry delights. Frequent diners will enjoy the indulgent flavors of chocolate and melting vanilla ice cream over the Red Velvet Lava Cake. Classic cocktail beverages complement every meal such as the 75 Main Cosmopolitan made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, triple sec, lime, and cranberry juice. The Arnold Palmer blends Absolut Citron with fresh brewed iced tea which is refreshing on hot summer days. Opt for a classic breakfast such as Egg Any Style, Omelets to your liking, or Eggs Benedict atop toasted English muffin with Canadian bacon finished with Hollandaise sauce. Early diners may also choose specialty brunch options such as a Belgium Waffle topped with warm berry compote and whipped cream. Diners will enjoy classic dishes including the Prime Black Truffle Burger which is dressed in Italian

black truffle romano cheese, roasted garlic aioli over black truffle, and consistently regarded as flavorfully filling. The Marinated Skirt Steak with a side of mashed potatoes, French beans and served with chimichurri sauce will melt in your mouth as it is cooked to tender perfection. Favored menu options also include Traditional Maine Lobster Roll in a toasted pull-apart bun, Jumbo Shrimp Martini with horseradish Remoulade sauce, and Grilled Filet Mignon with brandy green pepper corn sauce, mashed potato and grilled asparagus. The 75 Main lunch menu has more to savor from the Chicken Fettuccini featuring grilled chicken, Kalamata olives, sundried tomato sautéed with garlic and olive oil to a Butter Poached Lobster complemented by fricassee of cremini, shitake mushrooms, fingerling potatoes and asparagus in a buttery lobster broth.

SECRET SUMMER The Ultimate Summer Soiree By jennifer hedley

I

magine being transported to a different world, yet still remain in NYC. A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream in Long Island City or a Great Gatsby-esque garden party filled with a multitude of flowers inside a 100-year-old factory overlooking the Queensboro Bridge. Secret Summer does just that. Now in its fourth year, this one-of-kind cocktail festival hosts close to 1000 attendees and features seasonal farm-to-bar cocktails, unique food vendors and musical performances at The Foundry in Long Island City on Sunday, August 12 from 2pm - 8pm. Secret Summer is the first and only farm-to-bar cocktail festival where the focus is on fresh, organic, delicious cocktails that celebrate sustainability and local farming. The annual fete, produced by Tyler Hollinger (HighLife Productions) and Andy Maturana (RAPT), allows spirit brands the opportunity to showcase their finest drinks, each in a different room. Highlights this year include a Toki Whisky Washitsu tasting room and a Japanese Yatai highball cart featuring handcut ice spears. In addition, there will be the

80 | resident.com

Brugal 1888 rum tasting experience complemented with dessert, and a Brockmans Gin Juniper Forest where revellers can taste, smell and experience an atrium filled with foliage and juniper. Lastly there will also be a Blue Point Brewery Toasted Yacht where guests are invited to sip on Blue Point beer cocktails from a boat in the middle of The Foundry’s courtyard. Musical performances this year include headliner Moon Hooch, a Brooklyn-based band comprised of two saxophonists and a drummer, a traditional Sitar and Tabla Indian heritage music, a bespoke trumpeter and a secret marching band (oops not so secret). Food at the event includes The Choripan, Sophie’s Cuban, Empanadas and Wisefish Poke to satisfy everyone’s appetites. And, Man vs Food host Casey Webb will be on hand to judge the best cocktail at Secret Summer this year. Tyler Hollinger and Andy Maturana first produced Secret Summer four years ago after they noticed there weren’t events like this, which allowed brands to tell their story and activate in an immersive, experiential way and

they are proudest of their following, as 95 percent of past attendees are returning this year. Tickets were released to past attendees first and first-day tickets sold out within two hours, a testament to their fan base. The producers create specific experiential activations for brands, and as Tyler explains, “We believe in depth as opposed to width. Your brand is able to tell its story and touch people with all five senses while putting together an immersive experience tailored to each brand or story. Guests are able to experience and taste the products, as well as become a fan for life because of their day at Secret Summer.” In addition to Secret Summer you can catch Tyler and Andy at their winter event, Aquarius, which celebrates sustainable fish and the environment, every January.

THE ECO LUXE LAS LAGUNAS Off the Petén Path By HILLARY LATOS

S

omewhere between heaven and earth lies the mystical archaeological world of Petén. Thousands of years ago this region was considered the epicenter of power for the Mayan civilization. Today it’s home to some of the most famous UNESCO world heritage archaeological sites, like Tikal and El Mirador, that give us a glimpse into ancient Mayan life and remain protected under verdant canopies of natural rainforest jungles inhabited by indigenous wildlife.

84 | resident.com

The best way to reach Petén is to fly to the charming colonial town of Flores, which is only 50 minutes by plane from Guatemala City. One of the best places to stay to explore and experience the natural beauty of this fascinating region is at the eco luxury boutique hotel, Las Lagunas, located just outside of Flores. Set on 300 lush acres of a nature preserve on the shore of the Quexil Lagoon, there are 19 luxuriously appointed over-lagoon bungalows that seamlessly blend nature and eco-tourism, making it a perfect spot

to recharge after a long day out touring. Guests can wake up to the chirping sounds of native birds and fall asleep to the cacophony of howler monkeys. The spacious bungalows feature a rustic chic décor with plush beds, marble showers, and private decks with Jacuzzis to enjoy the solitude of the lush jungle atmosphere with breathtaking views over the lagoon. Enjoy the best of Guatemalan cuisine at Shultun Restaurant led by Executive Chef Michael

Muller. Some of the specialties of the house are sourced from local markets with an international flair. Highlights from the menu include clams in a white wine broth, blanco fish over portabello mushrooms, an avocado tower with smoked salmon, and grilled lamb chops with a honey glaze sauce. While on the property there are many activities at your disposal. Take a boat tour through the Quexil lagoon to one of the islands that offer a refuge to rescued spider monkeys. Bask in the quiet solitude of the jungle and cool off in their crescent- shaped infinity pool overlooking the lagoon. Learn about the history of the region in the hotel’s museum that displays the owner’s personal collection of priceless archaeological artifacts from Guatemala’s three major regions: the Petén Region, Lowlands, and Highlands. Most of the pieces from Petén are Mayan and date from 450 BC to 900 AD. After a day of exploring the famous ruins of Tikal, Uaxactún, and Yaxhá take the time to relax and restore the mind, body, and soul at Las Lagunas’ new 5,400-square-foot spa. Nature and wellness become one in this Mayan oasis replete with a beauty salon, steam room, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, and three treatment rooms. The signature treatments reflect the healing rituals of the Mayan culture, including their hot stone massage using jade gemstones that aid in detoxification while strengthening the body’s filtration and cleansing systems. Afterward connect with your ancestors through a Mayan ritual led by a shaman in the heart of the jungle that will open your mind and deepen your understanding of this ancient culture. Las Lagunas also offers six different tours to the region’s most famous historical UNESCO heritage sites. Spend the morning exploring the Lost World of Tikal with over 4,000 structures, including the tallest building in Mesoamerica. The ethereal and otherworldly landscape of Tikal also served as a film location for the rebel base of Yavin 4 in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Additionally, the third largest archaeological site in Guatemala, Yaxha is within a day’s drive from the hotel. This secluded ancient city offers mesmerizing sunset views from the top of its temple with diffused rays setting over the jungle and with the sounds of howler monkeys in the background, providing an experience that will stay with you forever. laslagunashotel.com

BAHAMAS’ CULINARY DESTINATION: BAHA MAR Gives Luxury Resort Vacationing New Meaning By DESTINY ROSATO

W

hether you are looking for a place to just unwind and escape the stresses of everyday life or enjoy some time away with family and friends, the all new Baha Mar Resort has it all. Located in Nassau, Bahamas where the translucent clear blue waters meet the white sandy beaches, and just five miles away from Nassau International Airport, the Baha Mar Resort is comprised of three hotels in one: the Grand Hyatt, the Rosewood and the SLS Hotel, each one offering something that will suit your particular needs. The modern and stylish bohemian-inspired five-star resort offers everything from gaming at its massive casino, the Caribbean’s largest, to exquisite dining and

86 | resident.com

nightlife. Did I mention the Baha Mar also has a stunning Jack Nicklaus Signature designed 18hole, 72-par signature golf course that overlooks the ocean skyline for those who enjoy golfing? This resort really does have it all. As for my unparalleled first-class experience, it started at the Nassau International Airport where I was greeted at the private Baha Mar Welcome Center by some very friendly Baha Mar employees in charge of car service. Waiting for my arrival was a kind driver named Daphne in a luxury SUV ready to bring me to the extravagant five-star resort. When I arrived I was greeted by the friendly staff. Check-in was quick and easy

and before long I was in my stylish and luxurious Ocean View Suite at the SLS Hotel. The view of the sparkling ocean from the balcony was both relaxing and alluring to say the least. I started off my vacation by relaxing poolside at the SLS Bungalow Pool. Here I enjoyed refreshing cocktails and a delicious poolside lunch. The Baha Mar offers seven pools for guests to choose from. At the beautiful private beach guests can enjoy lounging, and for those who are seeking more active pursuits, there are water sports and aquatic activities as well. There is also the BEACH Sanctuary where guests can learn about and even

participate in a feeding experience with nurse sharks, stingrays, sea turtles and tropical fish. For adults 18 and over, enjoy chic and lively music and drinks over at the Privilege pool party at the SLS Hotel. Rent a cabana with bottle service or simply grab a drink at the bar and enjoy the pool under the sun. This trendy spot is a lot of fun. Out of all that the Baha Mar has to offer the culinary experience at the Resort is unforgettable. The Baha Mar Resort has over “40 restaurants, bars and lounges offering incredible meals made by celebrity chefs and expertly crafted signature cocktails.” My experience dining at the Resort was unforgettable. Start the day off by having breakfast or maybe just enjoy a cup of coffee at Baha Mar Café Madelene. From Nutella Crepes to specialty classic breakfast options, the Café is a must. The service is prompt and you can enjoy an outside patio space to relax,

converse and enjoy your breakfast. Did I mention they offer gelato and other desserts for those who love their sweets? My first night at the Resort I enjoyed a magnificent dinner at Fi’ilia, which services honest Italian cuisine. Enjoy their table-side freshly made Caesar salad for two, handmade artisanal breads and homemade pastas. I would also recommend Katsuya for lunch or dinner. Enjoy Master Sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi’s take on the unique Japanese-inspired menu. Some of my favorite starters were the creamy Rock Shrimp Tempura and the exquisite Crispy Brussel Sprouts made with Balsamic Soy and Toasted Almonds. You then have a variety of vibrant, delicious signature rolls to choose from, especially if you choose the omakase tasting menu. One of my favorite rolls was the Lobster Dynamite Roll, its beauty as well as its exquisite taste, appealing to all the senses. It was one of the best sushi rolls

I had ever eaten. You will be pleasantly surprised at how delicious the food is here. Another must for dinner at the Baha Mar is Shuang Ba, serving Haute Chinese cuisine, where the décor is just as beautiful as the food is delicious. With its detailed Chinese-influenced décor and lucky number 8 incorporated into the restaurant’s decor, including seating for 88 patrons, there is a sense of luxury and calmness. The hand-carved Peking Duck was delectable alongside an order of Shrimp Fried Rice and many other signature dishes. Shuang Ba is an experience. Baha Mar will exceed your expectations in every respect. The service is great, the culinary offerings are extraordinary and the décor is luxurious. Spend time with family at the many pools and beaches or simply get away and relax at the ESPA Spa. It’s up to you as Baha Mar has it all.

DC CITY GUIDE Conquering The Capital By Elena Murzello

Stay

Hyatt Regency Bethesda The Nations capital has more than a handful of hotel offerings, but only one offers the hospitality of a small-town with the chicness of the city. Hyatt Regency Bethesda in Maryland is just a stones throw away from the core of DC. The Metro station is below the hotel and takes a quick 20min trip to the bustling Dupont Circle. After a 37 million dollar renovation with the help of Gensler, a global architecture/design firm, the hotel’s decor is modern with open architecture. There is a soft neutral grey palate with wooden accents throughout. The newly opened colossal 2,600 sq. ft. Starbucks and Morton’s Steakhouse are staples for hotel guests. Be sure to grab a drink and relax on the rooftop that offers a sweeping look of the city and beyond.

ART

JOHAN WAHLSTROM From Rock Star to Art Star By GEORGE WAYNE

JOHAN WAHLSTROM: I’m overwhelmed by all the positive reactions that my new show “Life Is Good” has received in both commissions and comments from viewers. The opening night was hectic, the gallery was full and we had several sales. To me it is a dream coming true to show at a great gallery like Georges Berges Gallery in NYC and to top that with an almost sold out show is more than I could ask for. I was a bit nervous before the show since my first show “Distorted Happiness” at Georges Berges Gallery last year was a sellout, so I wanted this new show to do just as well. My work plays with the narrative between resilience and irony within the context of current global politics in which societies and individuals are made to feel in a continual state of edge. I am inviting viewers to think candidly and critically about the obsessive and aggressive messages that confront them in daily life, to come up with new strategies for survival, and still seek to escape the imposition of certain values. GW: I have devised a new art term to truly describe the genre of your post-millennial paintings. I call –it—IRREALISM. It’s a provocative mix of irony and your signature painting technique of sometimes seemingly combative brush-strokes. Would you agree with my coinage? Or how would you describe your artistic ethos in general terms? JW: I love that definition—IRREALISM! That is the perfect way to describe my work; I never thought of that. Living in Europe influenced my previous work, so my recent projects are more limpid and leaning toward figurative. My work has changed a lot since I moved to New York City. The energy that I feel is not the same and the brushstroke becomes more energetic, same as the city itself. Also, the spirit of my paintings in the past was full of dark narratives.

T

he 55-year-old New York City artist via Stockholm—is garnering buzz as one of the definitive leaders of painters defining the post-millennial art genre I will now define as IRREALISM. It’s an emerging trend in the contemporary art world and Johan Wahlstrom is the definitive master. Collectors from all over the world have been gobbling up his work fast. Wahlstrom’s work features his signature brusque black strokes incorporating distorted figurations and dark monochrome stencil-type graphics and figures,

100 | resident.com

laced with wry irony and a clear political edge of a narrative. We sought to poke the psyche of the artist Johan Wahlstrom even further.... GEORGE WAYNE: Your most recent one-man show was aptly titled—“Life Is Good” and was one of the most talked about SoHo art shows of the 2018 summer season.

GW: Your brushstrokes look like charcoal on canvas—those hard-edged stencils. How would you define the process? JW: I was probably thinking about black-and-white colors. As you know white is not defined as a color because it’s the sum of all possible colors and black is not defined as a color because it contains absence of light. So, describing technological progress, obsession and the addiction of using devices such as iPhones in relation to social media, selfie culture, etc.… it came naturally to me that this series should be in black and white.

GW: I was most impressed with your black-andwhite series of paintings, which I have called Connect/ Disconnect. I love the anomaly of the irony and the works which capture with utmost irony the smartphone addictive universe we now live in. These paintings are the ultimate definition of what I mean by—IRREALISM.

irony. (joking) Now reading your idea, I find it interesting to think about millennials and how this generation will react to my work. Of course, there is a gap and differences about the way of thinking, but I believe that art is connecting people and has the power to erase all types of generational gaps.

JW: Ha-ha, yes, subversive irony! I like this term. It’s been a while since I’ve been observing people’s obsession and addiction with the use of their phones, especially the addiction to social media, which is connected to their phones. So, as I like to say, I paint today’s history.

GW: What are the origins, intent or better yet the philosophy of Johan Wahlstrom?

GW- There is something to be said for subversive irony through the brush and canvas of the astute artist. I consider you one of New York City’s most buzzed about post-millennial painters. You must be thrilled with the continued upward trajectory of your career. Your atypical Abstract Expressionism has clearly garnered you a fervent coven of collectors. JW: It seems like you enjoy a lot of subversive

JW: I don’t know if I can really call it a philosophy, but I feel lucky to be able to live from my passion and my motto is “it’s boring to die,” that came from the idea of my show in Malaga, Spain 2011. So, I think we should all use the best of our talents while we can. GW: You were a famous Swedish rock star at the height of ABBA-mania! Were you friends, or still friends, with Bjorn, Agnetha, Anna-Frid and Benny of ABBA fame? JW: Hah! I’m not that old.... I signed my first record deal in Sweden in 1980 and that lead to18 years of

touring and recording with my own band as a backup band for Scandinavian and International artists like Ian Hunter, Mick Ronson and Graham Parker. I toured, wrote songs and recorded with Mats Ronander, who played guitar on ABBA’s World Tour back in the days of ABBA. I do know Benny Andersson’s son Peter who is an acclaimed and successful songwriter in Sweden. GW: Resilience, irony and politics are other subtle contextual touches to your work which are not clear at first blush. JW: Yes, I agree 100 percent, but you forgot humor. Humor is an important quality in human beings. Maybe I have a notion of a dark humor in my work... I think that the humor is more obvious in the (connecting/disconnecting paintings). My previous opus was political, maybe the next will be about aliens.

ART

MAGGI MCDONALD And Her Powerful Brushstrokes By Hayley Lavin

O

ne of the reasons we love Australian-based artist Maggi McDonald is that she leaves the fate of her works to the movement of the paint and the patterns they make on canvas rather than solely trusting the paintbrush. The abstract artist’s large Instagram following and diverse and international clientele make it hard to believe that she has only been professionally creating art for the past four years.

102 | resident.com

A Cape Town, South Africa native, McDonald grew up in a creative household, with memories of her mom, who was a potter, making jewelry and macramĂŠ. Although she studied art as a school subject and did projects with her mom, McDonald never thought she would make a career as a painter; she initially studied languages, translating and editing. At 21 years old, McDonald left South Africa and headed for London, where she lived for five years

and met her Aussie husband. McDonald and her husband settled down in Australia about 16 years ago. McDonald began working in retail management at a department store; it was different from her prior work experiences, but she loved working with people and still loves to do so. McDonald went on to have a child, and life took its course. She was

going through some tough personal matters that led her to have an “aha moment,” that life is too short to do something that doesn’t make you happy. McDonald realized that whatever her calling was, it was going to involve her using her hands. She decided to go back to school and study design, but after taking a design course for one year, McDonald realized that she wanted to start painting again. And that’s exactly what she did. She started to post some of her works on Instagram and even sold some paintings to friends, and gave some art away. Everything else fell into place shortly after. McDonald ended studying for another year, focusing on surface design: textiles, wallpaper and pattern design. It was at this time that her painting career really started to take off. It has been four years now, and an incredible life journey for McDonald. Often, artists struggle to get off the ground running, but McDonald learned early on that to be successful, an artist needs to diversify and explore different avenues of passive pay. McDonald does not just paint all day; she manages a business as well, updating her website, doing things like interviews and podcasts, and behind-the-scenes administrative tasks. Though there are times where she can spend hours on end in the studio, it essential for McDonald and artists, in general, to step back and take time away from undergoing projects. McDonald finds inspiration in almost everything, from nature to man-made structures. Unlike most artists who have a very distinct vision in mind from the get-go, McDonald only needs a color or a palette and sees where the paint takes her. McDonald’s favorite part about her job is “being able to see her works all over the world.” Technology and Instagram have played a significant role in the artist’s success; as they allow her to share visuals with fans and clients of her work. Screen printers, interior designers or store owners, and people who want an original piece of art can easily go on McDonald’s website and buy her works. She recently had a Skype call with a couple from Beverly Hills, California, so that they could see the art in person. We can’t wait to see what else the abstract artist has in store.

KATARINA KRAEVSKA Abstract Artist Extraordinaire By W.A.MULLER Tell us how you got into art. Sometimes it seems to me that I have been doing art for much longer than it really is. This is an inexplicable feeling, perhaps it is due to the fact that art is either a part of you, or you have nothing to do with it. I always felt that I should be engaged in a creative profession, but when you are a young person and you see so many ambitious opportunities around, it’s not always possible to make the right choice. In my past professional life, I’ve tried different jobs which were far from art, but I never felt I am completely in my element. 2016 was my turning

104 | resident.com

point, my previous job as a purchasing manager was bringing me down, I realized it is a time to change the direction and start over again - now or never. And right at that moment the thirst for unlocking my creativity turned into a huge wave that I couldn’t and didn’t want to stop. So I quit my job without any hesitation in an attempt to deeply engross into the world of colors, shades, canvases and my personal experiments in painting. This was exciting, the inexpressible positive emotions thrilled through me, I believed I’m on the right path and do what I really love.

Where did you study? I’m a self-taught artist, without formal artistic education. I have studied German and English languages in Kiev National Linguistic University, Ukraine. What are your inspirations? If to talk about my inspirations, I’ll probably divide them into two types, one of them is secondary and cumulative - it consists of events and emotions that I’m experiencing on the daily basis like for example traveling, meeting extraordinary personalities, visiting concerts, reading poetry… in fact so many components

Who are your clients? Have you done art shows? My clients are people from all around the world who believe in the unique beauty of abstract art and are curious to get into the spirit of my philosophy. So far my paintings are presented on several international online marketplaces, but I’m also striving for participating in art shows in the future. What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ? At this stage of my artistic career, I’m still

experimenting in techniques and genres, but my main task was and remains the creation of deep meaning paintings. My next series is meant to be same bold and vibrant as my previous works like “Courage”, “Struggle for humanity”, “Going beyond personal reality”, “Hustle & bustle of big city”, which I am very proud of. Which artists are your favorite. Pablo Picasso, Vassily Kandinsky, Frida Kahlo.

saatchiart.com/kkraevska

Painting: Going beyond personal reality

that gradually form a certain state of mind. And the primary type is my inner-me, my mood, and the moment of the day. To create art, I am guided only by my personal inner vibrations and at that moment I’m inspired by a kind of risk to start an artwork without knowing where they will lead me. When the creative process starts, there is just something magical about it that gets me going. For me it’s therapeutic and very intimate, because each work is a part of my thoughts and energy. Why abstract? I’m madly in love with abstract art because it is an absolute freedom of expression and an alternative to put into life the most challenging ideas through extraordinary shapes, textures and color combinations. Abstract paintings force us to think, break the silence and enter into an endless dialogue between artist and its audience.

Since 1990, it has been bringing together women between the ages of 18 and 71, from more than 30 different countries, who embark on an adventure of a lifetime from the French city of Nice and onward to the start of the Rallye in the Moroccan desert. Participants of the 2018 rally included singer and actress Jazmin Grace Grimaldi and actress Kiera Chaplin, who came in 3rd place in their e-vehicle category, and Monegasque royalty Pauline Ducruet competing alongside fashionista Schanel Bakkouche. After spending 9 days deep in the Moroccan desert,

the Gazelles enjoyed a prestigious gala evening in an immense white marquee tent across from the ramparts of Essaouira. In a fitting tribute to the former Mogador, the theme of this year’s gala was “Marine Marvels”. Dominique Serra and the Governor of Essaouira opened the gala, inviting the 1,200 guests to stand and drink a toast with a glass of Tsarine champagne. The décor featured an aquarium, seashells, a sailboat and even a mermaid. Jazmin Grace Grimaldi, daughter of Prince Albert II of Monaco and a Gazelle of Team 504 (competing alongside actress Kiera Chaplin in the e-Gazelle Class), took to the stage to perform an original song at the commencement of the evening’s dinner. Further entertainment during the dinner was provided by belly dancers, sailors and acrobats. The winners of each category were then invited to the stage to receive gifts from event partners Aïcha, Saint Honoré and Afriquia.

Lively applause and a standing ovation were given to Marina Vrillacq, President of the Rallye’s nonprofit, Cœur de Gazelles; and Frédéric Valat, Manager of the Cœur de Gazelles medical caravan; and all the event’s volunteers and partners. “We were able to perform 8,400 medical procedures thanks to our volunteers and the partners who support us and understand our needs. I wish to thank them, because without them, we could do nothing. The strength of Cœur de Gazelles is in its patient follow-up. My thoughts go out to each of them,” said Marina Vrillacq. Her speech was interrupted by tears, and Frédéric Valat took over: “Thanks to the 140 teams of Gazelles who stopped to visit us in the villages where we were set up. You are our best representatives. You are the ones who promote Cœur de Gazelles.” The evening ended with music as dinner gave way to the dance floor. live2018.rallyeaichadesgazelles.com/en/rankings/

THE MARQUE

Are You in Control of Your Online Profile? By andrew wessels

T

he management of online reputation has become a crucial area in recent years; as the internet has become the primary source of information on companies and individuals the quality, verifiability, accuracy and ‘searchability’ of that information has become ever more important and valuable.

their profiles managed by The Marque in addition to people such as Lord Anthony St. John, Carphone Warehouse supremo, Sir Charles Dunstone and Citizen M Founder, Rattan Chadha.

The first thing that people do before coming to see you is to research you online. Are you in control of what they find and are they armed with accurate, current information on you and your business interests? Whether we like it or not, what is or is not available about us online could influence business decisions that are made regarding your companies and investments, family trusts and private offices. Existing and potentially new investment partners and even regulatory bodies looking at a deal will all gather information online as well as offline before making key decisions. Leaving such a process to chance by not owning and controlling your online profile and digital self is a huge financial and business risk. This can, however, be significantly mitigated. Historically it was preferable to stay below the radar and enjoy a degree of anonymity from people outside of one’s immediate business circle. With the plethora of information available online, the world’s leading reputation managers recommend maintaining and controlling a positive profile, just above the radar. Given that an online presence is rapidly becoming non-negotiable, what are the options? Many HNW’s have a Wikipedia page, which tends to be well populated, but is a source over which they have minimal control as to what is published. LinkedIn works well for many people although if you have reached a certain level of success you have to be prepared to receive a myriad of random connection requests and sales approaches. Another option is The Marque which gives you the ability to control how you are presented online. With an elegant digital profile and sophisticated search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques to ensure your name ranks as highly as possible, a Marque Profiles allows you to control your online presence. According to The Times of London, “Investment Bankers, City Lawyers and British Diplomats are among hundreds of prominent figures who use the Marque to control their online presence”. The Marque was launched to fill a gap in the market for individuals with multiple business interests or family offices who needed sophisticated, welldesigned online presence that they could control. The Marque manages profiles for successful people around the world and has recently opened an office in New York. New Yorkers, such as advertising guru and Blackstone Advisor John Bernbach, Blackstone’s ex- Senior Managing Director, Lawrence Guffey, PR legend Susan Magrino and Traub CEO, Mortimer Singer have

HAMPTONS JEWELRY SHOW

Fine Jewelry and Luxury Art Collectables By harry brads

T

he Hamptons has long been known as America’s preeminent playground for the super-rich and famous, so why not bring together the world’s leading fine jewelry and luxury art collectables dealers to exhibit their wares for the elitist of the elite to see and buy. That’s precisely the premise behind this year’s Hamptons Jewelry Show, a first-of-its kind, four-day extravaganza in which $30+ million in fine jewelry and luxury collectables will be on display, Thursday, August 2nd through Sunday, August 5th, 2018 at the equally spectacular 20,000 square foot Jewelry Pavilion at the Southampton Elks Fairgrounds, located at 605 Country Road 39 next to Mercedes Benz on the gateway to the Hamptons. With the discerning Hamptonite specifically in mind, it was created as an innovative and elegantly presented fair complete with individually lighted and designed booths to specifically attract those seeking to acquire rare and unique pieces of jewelry, vintage handbags and significant art objects in the largest collection ever presented together on Long Island’s East End. In doing so, it will feature more than 80 internationally renowned jewelry manufacturers, designers and dealers. Security will also be extremely tight and unprecedented for the Hamptons. In order to gain admission, patrons will need to present a government issued ID at the front gate with armed guards present. For

the price of entry, and depending on the package, patrons will have access to tastings of wines and spirits throughout the weekend. There will also be a live DJ and outdoor dining with food provided by Chef Collette from the Inn Spot. As for the cost of the jewelry and art itself, prices begin at $500, then head north to over $1 million. Among some of the exhibitors are Alexandra Mor, Pat Flynn, Gabriel Ofiesh Jewelry, Lika Behar Collection, Paul Morelli and Alessandro Barellini Firenze, as well as diamond, gem and gold elite jewelers David Friedman, Emsaru, Louis Newman & Co. and Nigram Jewels, plus estate dealers Gregory Kay Estate and Antique Jewelry, Jacob’s Diamond & Estate Jewelry and L&Z Antique and Estate Jewelers. Platinum sponsorships include Heritage Auctions, Brown Harris Stevens, Dr. Stephen Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery, the Hess Family Collection and BottleHampton. The Hamptons Jewelry Show is also committed to raising funds and holding specialty events for local charities. This includes an opening night party from 6:00 to 9:30PM on August 2nd with benefits going towards the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital; “Crack the Vault”, August 3rd from 6:00 to 8:PM in which attendees will receive a code to a locked safe holding a valuable $7,500 piece of jewelry donated by Hammerman Brothers with proceeds going towards

Family Service League; and “The Hamptons Gold Rush Jubilee” for The Retreat Domestic Violence Shelter in which a $250 coupon will be given to patrons upon admission to be used with participating exhibitors. Other charity fundraising efforts are also in the works. “This is perhaps the only show in the country that offers the public such a wide and curated selection of top-tier dealers, esteemed manufacturers, and prominent jewelry artists, together at one time,” says Hamptons Jewelry Show owner Rick Friedman, a longtime producer of numerous luxury fairs in the Hamptons, including ArtHamptons. “We expect more than 5,000 jewelry and art lovers to make a beeline to this fair. This refined environment will emerge as the Hamptons new mecca for jewelry enthusiasts.” Adds Show Director and curator, Eleni Prieston— herself a studio Goldsmith for 40 years, who also owned and operated two jewelry stores in the Hamptons and managed the esteemed Pritam and Eames Gallery: “We are presenting a varied fair of edgy glamour. We offer a holistic perspective on a luxury level for an elite clientele. Our relaxed shopping experience gives the thoughtful buyer an opportunity to select from an already edited group of exhibitors.”

DR. KENNETH MARK The Cosmetic Dermatologist to New York’s Elite By CARLOS LACAYO

H

AMPTONS,SOHO,– & ASPEN As an expert skier, outdoorsman, and physical fitness aficionado, Dr. Kenneth Mark knows first- hand about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and the effects of the elements on our skin. While he openly admits that his favorite “office” for a cosmetic consultation is the Aspen Mountain gondola, Dr. Mark also finds it rewarding to take care of the skin cancer and cosmetic concerns of patients on the East End. “Practicing in multiple locales that have that small town feel has allowed me to become embedded in the communities and to support various local charities. It’s not just work, it’s being part of something bigger,” says Dr. Mark, who also has an office in Soho.

“The surgeries I perform on the delicate features of a face are of the highest quality and are my real areas of expertise,” he says. Years of performing

COOLSCULPTING Another patient favorite is CoolSculpting, a noninvasive way to improve your beach body by freezing fat. Unlike liposuction, it avoids the risks of anesthesia or denting from removing too much fat. There is also no downtime with this procedure. Dr. Mark was the first in the Hamptons to offer the “cool advantage,” which cuts the treatment time almost in half!

BEST DOCTORS LIST Dr. Kenneth Mark was twice named to the “Best Doctors” list that represents the top5% of physicians in the United States as selected by other doctors. This is arguably the most prestigious honor a doctor can receive. Specically, Dr. Mark’s expertise is in cosmetic dermatology, injectables, lasers, peels, Kybella, skin cancer detection and cure, Mohs surgery, acne, and rosacea. After three years of training in dermatology at NYU, Dr. Mark completed a two-year fellowship with a cosmetic dermatology surgeon and a plastic surgeon, in order to subspecialize in cosmetic procedures, plastic reconstruction, and minimally invasive Mohs micrographic skin cancer surgery.

ULTHERAPY One of the most requested treatments is Ultherapy, the only FDA-cleared non-surgical procedure that actually lifts the skin in one treatment. It lifts the jawline, jowls, neck, and eyelids without surgery. And there is virtually no downtime. “You can go to the beach the next day; you can go to a cocktail party that night,” says Dr. Mark.

micro-focused Mohs skin cancer surgery has given Dr. Mark precision, knowledge of anatomy, and experience that translate to being an expert injector when it comes to Botox and fillers.

FILLERS & LASERS Dr. Mark offers the most up-to- date and best-in-class noninvasive cosmetic treatments, including MixTo fractional CO2 laser, Botox, Juvéderm, and Voluma, which he says is the greatest filler ever invented, because it is completely safe, adding volume with the most natural results. “Voluma allows me to think like an artist and lift and sculpt the face in three dimensions, instead of just filling lines and wrinkles.” Vollure and Volbella are two additional hyaluronic acid fillers that allow customization of each patient’s treatment. kennethmarkmd.com

PETER ANTON Candy Warhol By BENNETT MARCUS

Celebrity Collectors Internationally acclaimed artist Peter Anton creates large-scale food sculptures of iconic edibles Including pizza, donuts, and chocolates that have been shown in museums throughout the world, in the Netherlands, Greece, Portland, and Kansas City. They have also been featured at important art fairs like Art Basel Miami and TEFAF in Maastricht, Holland. Known as “Candy Warhol,” Anton’s work is in the collections of many VIP’s like former President Bill Clinton, Lord Norman Foster, the Jordanian royal family, Dennis Hopper and former Sony chairman Sir Howard Stringer.

galleries fighting over it, including one in the Hamptons. It’s going to get ugly,” he laughs. Keith Richards & Whoopi Goldberg Anton confesses to being star struck when Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards bought five pieces of his work at a recent exhibition in Manhattan. “I was at the exhibition when his wife Patti Hansen came in; it was a lot of

Sugartarium In 2017, Anton presented “Sugartarium,” a monumental installation of hyperrealistic sculptures including a giant ice cream sundae, macaroons, and a cherry pie that was 5 feet by 4 feet. They were smashed and splattered all around the walls at Unix Gallery in New York, which Anton had transformed into an insane asylum with worn-out beds. “We painted the gallery hospital green, and we had actors doing performance art on the bed, and those people were eating real food,” he explained. Art Basel Miami Another critical success was Sugar & Gomorrah, which gave collectors at Art Basel Miami an exciting immersive experience - a literal roller coaster ride, with the food sculptures displayed inside, along with live models, a kind of “end of the world” scenario, complete with skeletons. “There were lines going around the block, people were having so much fun, and that made me happy,” said Anton. Why food? The artists mother always had friends and neighbors over for meals, and Anton loved the way it brought people together. “When anything’s going on in life, you know, anything goor or anything bad, people gather around food and talk or celebrate,” he says. “It’s a comfort zone. I noticed that very early, that food was a focal point of life.” Anton studies the food before sculpting it When planning a new sculpture, Anton reads about the history of the food, studies images, and looks up recipes, and makes the dish himself. “It’s important to see what it looks like before it’s made, and once it’s in the final stage, because that gives you a telegraph to what materials you’ll be using.” Coming up: movie concession snacks at the Toronto Film Festival Anton is working on sculptures of food sold at movie concession stands like Gummy Bears, Sno-Caps and popcorn that will be exhibited during the Toronto Film Festival this September. Monumental chocolate tower Anton is finishing up a ten-foot outdoor tower of chocolate. “I have several

HETRICK-MARTIN INSTITUTE’S

SCHOOLS OUT By ASHLEIGH MURPHY

A

cloudless summer day, guests flocked from their New York City enclaves to the East Hampton estate of Lisa and James Cohen in celebration of the 20th anniversary of School’s Out. The annual fundraiser is one of summer’s hottest-ticket events, hosted by LGBTQ youth advocacy group Hetrick-Martin Institute, or H.M.I. One of the oldest and most successful LGBTQ organizations, H.M.I. has been known to throw an excellent party for an even greater cause. Guests were escorted down a winding drive and greeted by a gingham-clad Lisa Cohen, founder and editorial director of esteemed interior design publication Galerie Magazine, who is now on her fourth year of hosting School’s Out. Accompanied by her husband James, owner of Hudson News, attendees were presented upon arrival with a sweet photo-op in front of a cerulean Mini Cooper, one of the primary sponsors of the event. Upon entry to the tented garden party, summer cocktails and canapes were passed around while guests marveled at the tablescapes created by none other than Martha Stewart, who has been an H.M.I. supporter and School’s Out attendee for the past few years. The stunning table décor was created in a palette of green and grey; votives, succulent filled faux bois planters and ferns lined the table while sculptural steel chandeliers forged in Vermont created a noteworthy juxtaposition. Soon, the art-auction kicked-off; Mrs. Cohen is an avid collector. Mrs. Cohen, alongside co-chairs Benjamin Dixon and Dan Ennis, made warm welcoming speeches while guests fraternized and marveled at the buzzy scene. Fitness guru Tracy Anderson co-mingled with fashion designer Joseph Altuzarra, who had previously told The Daily Front Row that “the work that

Hetrick-Martin Institute is doing is so important.” All attendees were gracious in providing interviews and quotes to the various media covering the star-studded affair. All who support H.M.I. are eager to spread the importance of the institute’s work. In addition to offering a safe space for carefree self-expression, the organization provides educational tools, health-care support and economic empowerment to a society of bright young adults. As the day turned to dusk, guests were seated along three long tables, cloaked in white linen, lined with Ms. Stewart’s stand-out centerpieces. The dinner was hosted by a plentitude of interior industry leaders: Robert Stilin, Steven Gambrel, Jacqueline Terrebonne, Brian Sawyer, and Hamptons Magazine’s editor in chief Anetta Nowosielska, to name a few. Dinner was generously sponsored by Sag Harbor’s Lulu Kitchen, while drinks provided by Wölffer Estate Vineyard, Kettle One Vodka and Don Julio Tequila went down a treat. Between the dinner, drinks and centerpieces, not one guest was empty-handed. Upon their departure, School’s Out giftbags were distributed amongst guests, which included luxury clothing essentials from Håndværk, in addition to mementos from Mini Cooper, Galerie Magazine and Cambria stone, amongst others. Not only was School’s Out a memorable event, but the charitable donations this year exceeded all 20 years prior. Hetrick-Martin Institute’s School’s Out 2018 raised just over $360,000.
