SPRING IS IN THE AIR!

W

ith a mild winter and only 1 major snowstorm, we rejoiced in the fact that it’s finally spring and winter is behind us. The beautiful weather made us think of luxury escapes and spring travel. Our spring fashion and beauty themes were inspired by the Jetset lifestyle. From shooting on a Challenger 850 with Jetsmarter’s practical approach to flying private to accessories inspired by the sea and Manhattan skyline. As plants are starting to bloom in the wake of spring we looked at the multi benefits of natural plant based beauty and how to harness the power of nature. We also showcased ways to shed the effects of winter with some much needed pampering. This was also our first photo shoot in the sunny climes of Los Angeles where we were able to meet the iconic Harry Hamlin. Hamlin’s life story and road to fame is just as colorful as the roles he has played. With a career spanning over 40 years, the universe had a plan for Harry whose talents are only matched by his debonair looks which earned him People’s Sexiest Man in the late 80s. Vacation was on our minds this month as we highlighted exciting destinations and luxurious getaways such as Los Angeles, Mexico and the Caribbean, as well exotic Quito. Meanwhile at home in New York City the culinary scene is brimming with new restaurants, star chefs and new spring menus that celebrate the glorious choice eats at our doorstep. I hope this issue inspires you to try something new, break out of your routine, explore a new destination, enjoy the warm weather and experience the great outdoors.

Careers Through

CULINARY ARTS PROGRAM Spring Benefit

Photos by Steve Sands, Annie Watt, Kathryn Cooper.

O

ne of the premiere spring benefit events in NYC is the annual Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP) that honored acclaimed chef, restaurateur and author Daniel Humm of Eleven Madison Park and The NoMad held at Pier 60. This gala raised funds to support the national not-for-profit’s mission of providing culinary career opportunities, education and scholarships to disadvantaged youth. Guests were also treated to a grand tasting featuring over 40 of NYC’s top chefs as they moved from table to table to try dishes like Sweet Potato Crémeux with hazelnut financier and bourbon by Markus Glocker of Bâtard; Chantrelle, Sencha, and Dashi by Bryce Shuman of Betony; Verjus marinated Diver Scallops, Fresno Chili, Daikon and Buddha Hand by Gabriel Kreuther of Gabriel Kreuther; Peekytoe Crab Dumpling with Gae Jang sauce by Cedric Vongerichten of Perry Street; and Warm Poached Egg with Black Truffle by Abram Bissell of The Modern. Cooking alongside these all-star chefs were more than 60 New York City C-CAP high school culinary students and alumni, all aspiring to work with the best, and be the best in the culinary world. “The benefit this year was the most successful in C-CAP’s history, bringing in over $1,200,000, the most we’ve ever raised in a single night,” said Susan Robbins, C-CAP’s President. “Having Marcus Samuelsson and Mark Weiss, as Co-Chairs of of our Board, building upon the work of our Founder Richard Grausman has been a winning combination for C-CAP this year. Chef Samuelsson truly understands

26 • Resident • April 2016

the importance of culinary education and the demand for skilled talent in the industry today. He has been a great mentor and leader to C-CAP students and graduates, and we look forward to C-CAP’s continued growth.” Mark Weiss brings the business acumen and experience to give the students the building blocks to succeed as restaurateurs. Weiss states, “What’s great now is that you’ve seen graduates from our program move up the ranks to become incredibly successful chefs over the years and they realize they could not have achieved their success without the support of C-CAP. It’s fabulous to see these children grow into such fabulous chefs and people, and C-CAP has been there for their high school and adult lives and these students come back as adults to mentor the next generation. One of the reasons why chefs love to be involved is that the C-CAP graduates are so well trained and make for excellent hires in their kitchens. It’s not just about what we’ve done but what we will be doing for future generations.”

C-CAP Alum Amar Santana, guest speaker and recently was in the finale of Bravo’s Top Chef, Mark Weiss and Marcus Samuelsson

New Movies For You

Ben Affleck and Amy Adams @ Batman vs. Superman

Gerard Butler @ London Has Fallen

Mary Elizabeth Winstead @ 10 Cloverfield Lane

Penelope Cruz @ Zoolander

These are the movies you want to see this month. If you like action I recommend Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice staring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. This movie is all Pow and Bang . Co-star Jesse Eisenberg said, “ The take away is how interesting the movie looks and how wonderful it is.” Agreed. Want more action; try London Has Fallen, which is ripped from future headlines. It stars Aaron Eckhart and Gerard Butler who said “ There is nothing better than sitting in a cinema being excited, being scared, with your adrenaline going. This movie is a fantastic roller coaster ride that has you on the edge of your seat.” I’ll second that. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a sci-fi thriller with a surprise ending I don’t want to spoil. John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher, Jr. create palatable tension from the beginning to the end. If you like the super natural check out the The Witch which is based on American folk tales. The film features Anya Taylor-Joy as the Devil’s convert who opined “The witch is a plastic Halloween decoration now, but actually the witch was a very frightening thing that had huge repercussions on our history. We should remember that there was that fear.” After all this you’ll need a good laugh and If you’re a fashionista you’ll get all the inside jokes in Zoolander2 with Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson and a hilarious Penelope Cruz. There are also campy cameos by Ariana Grande, Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs , and Valentino. Owen nailed it when he said “ Zoolander didn’t do that well but over the years it’s developed a cult following.” This is the new Rocky Horror Picture Show for millennials; theaters will be screening it at midnight with fans dressing up as Derek , Hansel and Valentina and repeating the dialogue for decades. The 15th New York Turkish Film Festival featured eight films including Limonata, Sivas and the Oscar nominated Mustang by director Deniz Gamze Erguven. The provocative series was presented by the American Turkish Society. Americanturkishsociety.org

The Best is Yet to Come

DR. ROBI LUDWIG By Haiting Tan

A

n established psychotherapist and a topnotch reporter, Dr. Robi Ludwig can now add writer to her already prolific resume. “Your Best Age Is Now” is a book complied of Dr. Ludwig’s scientific research and interviews that are aimed to bust the myths that society has of midlife.

It is understandable that women have a phobia of hitting midlife because they believe that they would stop being relevant and start running out of options in terms of their work and personal lives. Dr. Ludwig admits that she too felt uncomfortable when people asked about her age because she felt that it was an obstacle when it comes to running for job positions. She started to question if there were going to be any more opportunities. Middle-aged women have been brainwashed by our culture to assume that youth is the only place where women get noticed. However, Dr. Ludwig’s opinion took a 180 degree turn when she kept seeing women in midlife looking so young, fit and fabulous, nothing like what she had envisioned. She was inspired to write a book about midlife; she believed that this perception that midlife is the beginning of the end was wrong because there no longer has to be a midlife crisis. Dr. Ludwig discovered that men in midlife are open to the idea of dating middle aged women because they believe that these women are confident, realistic in their expectations of what they want in a relationship, and have a similar mindset. This however, is not the image that society is accustomed to. When we think of a stereotypical businessman, he usually has his arm around a young eye candy. It was contradictions like these that motivated Dr. Ludwig to write her highly acclaimed book. Despite midlife ranging from the ages of 45 to 60, it should be treated as a second adulthood. Middle aged women should reject the notion that midlife is a time of limitations instead they should start rebelling and acting like teenagers. It is crucial to “like yourself and own yourself” because it provides you with the “feeling like you can pursue and do what you need to do in your life.” says Dr. Ludwig. Similar to adolescents, middle aged women should have role models, to live life like how their midlife mentors live life. In the book, Dr. Ludwig shares about her midlife mentor for spirituality, Kathy Lee Griffith. If you want to start taking charge of your personal and work life, Dr. Ludwig’s book is available for sale from April 5th. Drrobiludwig.com

Arthur Aidala

By Bennett Marcus

Arthur Aidala

FOX NEWS LEGAL EAGLE & CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY

Y

ou’ve seen attorney Arthur Aidala on television for years, as a longtime legal commentator analyzing complex cases for Fox News, as well as on Court TV, MSNBC, Fox 5, and New York 1. He also appears regularly on The Kelly File with his friend Megyn Kelly. What you may not know is that the man you see on TV is one of New York City’s top criminal defense lawyers, taking on some of the high-profile cases making headlines in recent years. He successfully defended NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, who was falsely accused of sexual misconduct. Another famous case that he won despite long odds was that of Brigitte Harris, who killed her father after he abused her for years, and yet another was the crane operator in the fatal 2008 collapse in Midtown Manhattan. aidalalaw.com

Brooklyn Bar Association Aidala is currently the 100th president of the Brooklyn Bar Association, which has over 2,000 members in every field of law. “I take it very seriously,” says Aidala. He points out that Brooklyn, where he grew up and still lives, has changed tremendously. “I have seen first-hand the renaissance that Brooklyn is experiencing, and the way that Brooklyn has become a shining star in the city. I want the bar association to be a shining star in the citywide legal community.” Under Aidala’s leadership, the association has broken records for fundraising, including some for renovations to the 125-year-old headquarters building. The main boardroom, which hadn’t been touched since 1968, is undergoing a gut renovation, and on April 6, at the association’s annual judges’ night, U.S. Supreme Court justice Samuel Alito will cut the ribbon. Aidala also serves as an officer of the King’s County Criminal Bar Association. brooklynbar.org

Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins In addition to criminal cases, Aidala also works on corporate business deals, putting together, as he describes it, “the guy who sells the tires with the 34 • Resident • April 2016

guy who sells the cars.” Partners and associates in his firm, Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins, are expert in a wide array of legal specialties, including personal injury law, real estate, civil litigation and matrimonial law. The newest addition to the firm, former Supreme Court Judge Barry Kamins, specializes in appellate and attorney disciplinary work, representing lawyers and judges who get into trouble with the bar. “It’s a full-service law firm,” Aidala says.

Diverse practice, helping people Aidala doesn’t take on high-profile cases for the notoriety. “I became a lawyer to help people,” Aidala says. In the Brigitte Harris case, he was so moved by her situation, that he not only worked pro bono, but also convinced all the experts who testified to do so unpaid, because she did not have the funds. “The facts of that case were so horrific, and obviously it was very gratifying when we achieved such positive results for her,” Aidala says. “With the exception of time with my family, nothing really

is equivalent to that feeling of gratification I get when I help a fellow human being in their most desperate time of need.”

Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation In December, Aidala represented Maritza Ramos, the widow of slain Detective Rafael Ramos, as she launched The Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation, which he says was a dream come true. “It was an opportunity to help a family who just had the ultimate tragedy do something good for the community,” he says. Aidala used his local news contacts to help get the word out, and the foundation recently held its first fundraising event with Mariano Rivera as a guest. The organization aims to raise awareness of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and to better connect officers with the community, and to support families who have lost loved ones working in that profession. detectiverafaelramos.org

efore modern technology, ancient civilizations from Asia to Africa used plants to heal their ailments. Although there is no exact formula to perfectly radiant skin and overall wellness, harnessing the power of plant-based ingredients, from diet, nutritional supplementation and a nutrient-rich skin care routine can make all the difference for the look and feel of beauty from within. Products rooted in nature are not only as effective as synthetic ones but if sourced from pure and exceptional quality ingredients, with modern extraction methods, they can deliver a powerful punch. Many companies have made huge strides in finding more plant-based ways of penetrating the skin without the use of harsh chemicals which can have a toxic effect on the body. Dr. Mark Menolascino, MD, internal medicine specialist, and key medical opinion leader at Lycored, states that most people are nutrient deficient even if following a proper diet and believes that targeted nutraceuticals and the use of synergistic combinations - for example, Lycopene and Lutein, as found in Lycored formulations, are important for youth optimization and balanced wellness. The vitamins and nutrients from plants can not only be nourishing, but also healing, protecting and anti-inflammatory. Whether we want to address concerns like pigmentation changes, redness or first signs of aging, botanical-powered products can help us keep our complexion and hair looking its best. Here is a look at some plant-based ingredients to feed your skin and body - the beautifying all-stars:

Nix Weather Woes

Extension Course

Lackluster locks are a common concern after a long winter in the urban jungle; dry air and cool temps can lead to breakage and straw-like texture. Combat winter woes by applying a nourishing hair mask at least once a week. If you’re looking for a natural solution, whip up a DIY recipe including egg, avocado or flax oil to treat hair with healthy fats that restore shine, strength and moisture.

For those clients seeking extra length, fullness or simply a healthy option to grow out their hair, extensions may be the perfect fit. Brands like Platinum Seamless and Invis-tab utilize medical grade adhesive to safely and effectively attach to natural hair, adding instant length and volume. Plus, they won’t snarl or damage hair when removed. Extensions are the perfect way to grow out last season’s cut without sacrificing style.

Take Your Vitamins By now, you know that supplements are great for boosting the immune system and overall health--this extends to hair as well! Protein-rich and healthy fats will help maintain natural luster, strengthen and nourish the scalp and hair shaft. Or, try clinicallytested Viviscal hair care supplements, which work to increase hair health from within, increasing thickness, strengthening and improving hair growth. Get Your Beauty Sleep Sleep is crucial for optimum health; a well-rested body is a happy, healthy one. Your hair can also improve as you snooze by sleeping on a silk pillowcase. One to try: Slipsilk, which prevents bed head and also protects the delicate facial skin. The luxe fibers may help prevent breakage which ultimately leads to thinning hair.

CINDY BARSHOP Knows What a Woman Wants

L

isted as one of the “100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs” by Goldman Sachs in 2012, and also a former star on “The Real Housewives of New York City,” Cindy Barshop’s days as a reality star are behind her. Leaving the reality television show after one season, she turned to focus on Completely Bare, a waxing and laser hair removal salon established by Barshop almost 20 years ago. The salon has now relaunched as Spruce & Bond while Barshop has moved on to a bigger project, VSPOT.

emphasized that she is passionate about transforming the perceptions of people, she wants them to be acceptive of issues that people are embarrassed about. VSPOT was inspired when Barshop met with a president of a laser company who talked about a new technology to change women’s sexual health. The fractional CO2 laser offers a solution to vaginal looseness, post menopausal dryness and incontinence. Its process is fast, pain-free and patients would not have to endure side effects or take pills during or after the treatment.

Referring to the Showtime television program, “The Affair,” Barshop touches on the character Margaret Butler. While Butler is a 62-year old grandmother living in the Hamptons, Barshop insists that such perceptions of older women being grandmothers at such an early age is no longer relevant as there are many 50-year old women with young children.

Known as the Femilift laser, it delivers precise laser energy into the tissues of the vagina and redirects blood flow to the area and causes the tissues to regenerate, resulting in younger and tighter tissues. Even after one treatment, the effects are immediate. Patrons are required to sit through at least three brief treatments once every four to six weeks for lasting results.

The VSPOT owner goes on to say that while women can take care of their outside by doing their hair, makeup, applying cream to their skin, there is no way of taking care of their vagina. This was when the former housewife saw a white space in the market, she along with her team of female gynecologists believed that women needed this. With the one and only FDA approved pill to enhance desire for women, Barshop foresaw an opportunity to change offerings for women’s sexual health. When Barshop first found Completely Bare in 1998, hair removal was a taboo subject. The businesswoman

While the treatment might not necessarily prevent cervical cancer, VSPOT has paired up with United Breast Cancer Foundation in hopes of rebuilding the lives and sexual health of breast cancer survivors. VSPOT has certainly found success in assisting women to regain their sex lives and rebuilding intimacy with their husbands or maybe even younger boyfriends. As Barshop says, “It’s the fountain of youth for your vagina.” VSPOTmedispa.com

A 21st CENTURY REMEDY

I

magine driving on a road trip and you have to pull over to go to the bathroom every hour, disrupting your ride. When nature calls you have to go, we’ve all been there at one point or another. For some people, unfortunately, going ALL the time has become a normal way of life. But what Dr. David Shusterman, founder of NYUrology. com, wants them to know is that there is actually a quick fix. Dr Shusterman’s 21st century solution is acupuncture for the bladder. It helps people that suffer from incontinence – an important bladder issue just made more public recently by actress Kate Winslet. Though urination abnormalities is a taboo subject, it’s a common issue that more than half of the population of women suffer from. If you drink two liters of fluid a day you’re supposed to relieve yourself every three hours. Dr. Shusterman

says the best thing to do is to keep a diary to know. “Unless you keep a diary, most doctors dismiss you saying you go to the bathroom a lot because it doesn’t really do a lot of harm to you… but when I speak to my patients it’s a huge quality of life issue for them.” Though you won’t die from going to the bathroom too much, your daily life is severely affected. The even better news is that this painless treatment is only 20 minutes with an 80% efficacy rate with no complications and is usually covered by insurance. “The same needles are used with regular acupuncture,” Dr. Shusterman says, “but instead of stabbing the nerve we are stimulating around the nerve and not damaging it.” The majority of patients notice a significant difference after one procedure, but sometimes people may need a few more treatments. “Doctors don’t want to talk about this treatment

because it decreases their surgery numbers, so a lot a lot of people get surgery for bladder related issues and it’s not necessary,” Shusterman says. But he is seeing more younger people coming in because they ‘google’ the issue and see that there is a way to fix it, and that they don’t have to accept living with the inconvenience of constantly seeking a bathroom. Though the older generation attributes this issue to age, they are less likely to be aware of this simple remedy. Nyurology.com

HARRY HAMLIN All photos by: Ryan Orange | Stylist: Adeel Khan | Shot on location in Encino, Ca (contact: sebastianw@nestseekers.com)

By Michael Travin

F

or over three decades Harry Hamlin has been gracing the stage to the screen with his talent. Destined to be an actor, Hamlin knew at an early age this was his calling in life, and though he set out to be a stage actor the universe had a way of steering him in the direction of becoming a film and television star, and the rest is history. Over the years his talent has shone through and though he was probably recognized for his sex appeal garnering the title of People Magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ he also starred in the cult classics Clash of the Titans, and LA Law. Most recently he received an Emmy nomination for Mad Men and will appear in the Epix series Graves this Fall with Nick Nolte, and stars in the thriller Rebirth premiering this April at the Tribeca Film Festival, and stars as the lead in Penn Jillette’s Director’s Cut which opened Slamdance and has a part in Sundance’s New Frontiers virtual reality feature, Defrost. Here Resident Magazine catches up with Hamlin in Los Angeles as he discusses his journey to stardom and life as a dad. Q: You’ve had an incredible career over the years spanning from Broadway to TV and film. What is your favorite aspect accumulated over the years?

Q: Do you feel that there’s a difference in the way your son grew up without you being there on a regular basis as compared to your girls? Hamlin: Absolutely, it’s night and day. He’s European and he grew up with a European sensibility with his mother. I feel as though I have missed out a lot on not being able to be with him to put him into bed every night and help him with his homework or go to his sporting events and see his plays, none of which I can see because he was there and I was here. One thing I wasn’t able to do was to move over to Italy for 15 years and give up my career. But having this rich experience with these kids I’m hoping that at some point my son and I will get together and maybe spend a lot of time as adults together which we haven’t done yet but I’m hopeful we will. Q: Lets go to your career from the beginning and how did you get started? You went to Yale, what was your driving force to get into acting?

Hamlin: My favorite aspect accumulated throughout the years is that I’ve done exactly what I wanted to do and I have been lucky enough to have moved between theatre, television and film to writing as well. At the same time, I have a really multidimensional family and my kids are my main focus. To have a career where you’re able to work and support your family and also be there 98 percent of nights while my kids were growing up to put them to bed and tell them a bedtime story was the biggest gift of all.

Hamlin: It’s odd but I always knew I wanted to get into acting but my parents were very much against anything in the arts. They were real pragmatists and they wanted me to be an architect and I even majored in architecture in college. I still love architecture and I’ve built a few things including a house. One thing led to another, and eventually I was pushed into the direction of my passion which was acting and I wasn’t really willing to acknowledge that to anybody and remained my secret for many years. I started with my first two years at Berkeley where I ended up doing show after show and eventually transferred to Yale after my sophomore year.

Q: Tell us a little about your family.

Q: Is anybody in your family involved in acting?

Hamlin: I wish I was able to spend more time with my son as he grew up in Rome and I’m grateful now that I can spend every day with my girls. I’ve traveled with them, raised them and helped them with their homework with while I did not get the chance to do that with my son at all.

Hamlin: No. My father was a scientist and an Aerohawk engineer, a rocket scientist I guess, though he would never admit it. And my mother was a housewife. But there never had been anybody in the acting profession in the history of my family. Finally I told them after Yale about the plays that I was doing at college. They always thought that I was on this

trajectory to be a businessman or an architect. And then out of the blue I was granted a scholarship by William Wall at ACT upon matriculation from Yale and then I told my parents that I was going to do that. They had arranged a job for me in New York in WNET as an associate producer and thought I would work in the corporate side of entertainment. When I told them that I was not going to take that job and was planning to drive to San Francisco to enroll in the American Conservatory Theatre training program, I packed up my car and I said I am leaving tomorrow. The next morning I turned the ignition and my car wouldn’t start. During the night, they had taken the distributor head out of my car, which is the heart of the car, and hid it and so my car was dead. I had to go that day and enroll in the training program and all I took was a guitar and suitcase spent my last 20 bucks on a cab to the airport and it was the only time in my life I have ever deliberately bounced a check which was to Pacific Southwest Airlines for my flight to San Francisco. I knew I had no money in my account but I had my checkbook. I depended on the kindness of strangers for the next couple of months and stayed in many different people’s apartments and I got a stipend for my scholarship so I was able to survive. We had food stamps. Q: So what was your first big break? Hamlin: My first big break was in the end of my second year of a three year classical intensive training program which was similar to the graduate programs at Yale or Carnegie. Peter Scheffer’s award winning play, Equus that had hit the London stage and had just opened in New York and was winning all the Tonys after winning multiple awards in London. It was about a psychiatrist who was trying to take care of a young boy who had stabbed the eyes out of a stable-full of horses. The director Bill Ball who was also the director of the theatre asked me to be the boy in the play because I was the right age, had the right sort of look and I was trained. That was the good news, the bad news was the last 25 minutes of the play the boy has to be completely naked on stage in front of 2000 people every night. So I trepidaciously signed on to do that play, which

was my big break. I could enter the union that way. I got on stage and took my clothes off in front of people for two seasons. Q: Were there any kids that were given the opportunity before you? Hamlin: Yeah there was a kid who was doing it at the theatre before me but we at that time we were the sister theatre to the Moscow Art Theatre. It was 1976, they were talking about the cold war which was still 15 years from actually ending. Brezhnev was President of Russia, Carter was President of US, we were sharing plays back and forth between Moscow and San Francisco, he went off to Moscow to do a play and I was asked to fill in for him and that kid ended up not coming back. Q: What happened after the play? Hamlin: While I was in my third year of the training program, I was in the second season of Equus, but I was still a student. One day I met a girl who was filling out some forms for a scholarship to study abroad for the Fullbright scholarship and offered me an extra form. I thought about it for a minute where would I want to and figured since our play is in Moscow I would want to travel to the Moscow Art Theatre and study with the guy named Efimov who was a very famous actor at that time. A couple of months later I was accepted into the Fullbright program and left the ACT for Moscow. Q: How are your parents doing at this stage? Hamlin: They came and saw me naked on stage in “Equus.” The play got standing ovations every night and I was on the front of all the papers and magazines and became really famous in San Francisco for doing that play so I guess that they kind of thought that maybe I had something, and it wasn’t such a bad idea after all. I’m not sure how proud they were of seeing their son naked on stage but they did come to see the play. That was the only time I really spent any time with them during the three years I was at ACT. They liked the fact that I got a Fullbright scholarship, that they felt was pretty cool. Carter and Brezhnev got into a big fight and I left ACT so I didn’t have a job anymore. I went to LA to pack my bags to go to Moscow, and then I got a letter from the Fullbright people saying that they had to pull my visa because detente had disintegrated between the US and

Russia. You can’t go anywhere in Russia. They said we’ll send you to London, we don’t want you to study there but you can meet Olivier, we’ll arrange meetings with different people and then you’ll spend eight months writing your paper and you’ll be done with your Fullbright. In the meantime a casting director from Warner Brothers who had seen me in “Equus,” invited me to come over. I said I’m sorry I never want to do movies, I’m only going to be a theatre actor for the rest of my life, movies are selling out. I refused to go and see her but I kept getting needled by people so I finally went to Warner Brothers and met with this casting director. She said look your reviews are great from all the plays you’ve done, you’ve got the right look and we at Warner Brothers are interested in you. She said as a matter of fact there’s a mini series that’s casting right down the hall right now right this very moment. Why don’t you go read the leading role, you’d be perfect for it. It’s a young kid with two brothers, a Western that’s going to be amazing. I said no, I don’t want to do television, I’m a theatre actor. She said oh come on it’ll just be fun. Just go on and do it and handed me the papers. I went down the hall and there was this handsome blonde kid sitting on the bench, who said his father was the producer and he would be reading with me. So we worked

on it for five minutes, went in I read it for the guy, by the time I walked back to the casting director’s office, a guy calls up and says you got the part. So within half an hour of me being in the film business, which I wasn’t really in, I got this leading role in this mini series. Q: What was the mini series? Hamlin: It was called “Awakening Land.” The blonde kid was Corbin Bernsen. His father was producing it. He wasn’t in it, he was just reading the actor. Ten years later, I ended up working with Corbin on “LA Law,” which is an odd story. But I said no, I turned it down, I said I’m sorry I’m not going to do that, that’s not what I’m here for, I’m going to London. I’m going to study Shakespeare in London. By turning that down, it got everybody really interested. I was serious I wanted to go to London and work with Laurence Olivier on Shakespeare. I was being completely honest with them. All of a sudden, offers started coming in. I was leaving the following week to London. It became like if you can’t get this fish on the deck, I’m going to keep trying. So this casting director’s secretary called me up and said there’s this director who’s coming in from New York who is doing this big movie, a comedy, and is flying in a couple of actresses from New York. He is doing a screen testing for these actresses and he needs a good actor to throw the lines at the girls. You won’t be on camera or anything but we need you. I said No, I’m going to London, I’m not in the film business. She said I might be able to get you $250 for two days and I thought I needed the 35mm camera. I said well look if you can get me enough money to get a camera, I’ll consider it. I’ll come in and meet with the director and so I did. I sat down with the director and read through the whole script. I had no idea who he was. I hadn’t made any inquiries about anything, I just read the script. I had no desire to do the movie, I was just doing a favor for this girl to get the money. Well it turned out to be Stanley Donen, who directed “Singin’ in the Rain,” I didn’t know who he was. After the second day, he called me up and said would you stay in town next week? Could you delay your trip for a week because I want to put you on film. He said you’ve got to cut your hair though, would you mind cutting your hair? If you do, I’ll put you in costume so when you come back from London you’ll have a real film. I said no. I had no interest in that. He said well just do

it for me please. We’ll fill in another $250. So I sold out. Q: What movie did it end up being? Hamlin: Well it was “Movie Movie,” with George C. Scott. He called me after the next day and he said I’m going to give you a lead role in the movie. I said no, I turned it down. I said I’m not auditioning for movies.

of a character actor than I am a leading man because that’s the way I was trained. So it makes for a lot of time in between jobs but when you get the jobs, the right ones, it’s really fun, it’s really interesting jobs to do. So I don’t play the same guy every time. I guess the “LA Law” character is probably closest to who I really am. I mean I had a character there, I played a character in him, he had a different rhythm and sense of humor than I do but he was closer than most of the characters I play. Like the guy in “Mad Men” is like nothing like who I am.

Q: Did you fall in love with anybody on the set? Q: So who are you? What do you like to drive? Hamlin: I had a crush on Kathleen Beller who played my sister. The girl who played my girlfriend was George C. Scott’s recent wife, Trish Van Devere. She was 10 years older than I and she was supposed to play my girlfriend. She muscled her way into the movie, she insisted that George put her in the movie. George ended up going to Stanley and said if you don’t put my wife in the movie, I’m not going to do the movie. It was just totally wrong. Q: So you’re learning an awful lot about the way it works? Hamlin: Well I’m 25 years old. Here’s this 37-year old woman that’s supposed to be my girlfriend. It was obvious that there was a disconnect there right? George said well my wife wants to be a movie star. The only place we could put her in was as Harry’s girlfriend. I had a little crush on Kathleen Beller. But I ended up doing a relic with my mother and sister, she said don’t do the Fullbright give the money back, you’ve got too many credits anyway. Q: So now your mom is really into this? Hamlin: My mom really wanted me to do it. She convinced me to do it. Within two years, I was paying their bills for them, so then they’re really happy. I was doing movie after movie, I was on every list, up for every movie that was being made and meeting Steven Spielberg. Q: Do you have a favorite role? Hamlin: Well I don’t know they always say your first one is your favorite one. Well I guess the movie “Movie Movie,” was pretty fun. But every role you kind of cherish everyone, and obviously every one is a brand new experience. I can’t say it was a favorite. Q: What about recently like your “Shameless” which is a fun show and “Mad Men”? Hamlin: I like to do different stuff, and I am more

Hamlin: I drive a Toyota but I also have a Tesla. It depends on if I’m feeling Tesla or Toyota. I’m an outdoor person, a mountain climber. I would go alone every year for five days into the High Sea area and that’s when I set out time, my meditation time. Q: So what other hobbies do you have? Hamlin: I’m a guitar player, that’s probably my main hobby. Other than that, I’m a scuba diver, and have been doing that since 1963. I’d say that I look forward most to mountain climbing if I’m thinking about something all year long, I’m thinking about that five days that I get to spend solo in the High Seas area. Q: That’s where you go every single year? Hamlin: Yeah because it’s very diverse there, you can get really high into the mountains. You can get really far out into the wilderness there really quickly. It only takes about a day to get into the complete unknown. Once there, it’s totally wild and absolute wilderness. There aren’t that many places that you can do that. Perhaps the Rocky Mountains or Glacier National Park, or even the cascades but that would take days to get there. I don’t have days, I take six days in September and say these are my six days. Q: In terms of dress, do you have a favorite type of designers that you use for your jeans or your shirts or jackets? Hamlin: What you’re seeing is what I wear every day, it’s easy. I guess Seven would be the jeans that I wear more than anything else. Varvatos is probably closest when it comes to getting gussied up. If I wear a fancy suit it’s Tom Ford, all my suits are Tom Ford or Varvatos. I’ve been doing Tom Ford since he was at Gucci and have his suits that I’ve kept since the 80s since I first discovered him with a couple of Prada years in between.

Exclusive Q&A

Up Close with the NYC Starchitect Behind

DUBAI’S MOST EXPENSIVE PENTHOUSE

W

ith global markets going crazy, foreign investors are rushing to New York’s luxury developments, a safe choice for wealthy investors seeking long-term solace for their capital. Sure enough, the NYC market has seen its fair share of blockbuster deals last year, including a $100 million record-breaking condo sale at One57 on W 57th St. But as the stakes grow higher, developers and architects face the challenge of creating residences that justify the record-breaking price points. And developers are looking elsewhere like the Middle East. In the past year, NYC starchitect Michel Abboud has produced his fair share of stunning projects, including Tribeca’s 45 Park, a Downtown mosque conversion, and, most recently, a $74 million penthouse. In this exclusive interview, Resident gets the breakdown on NYC’s luxury market, building abroad vs. New York and what we can expect next.

Erik Dolan-Del Vecchio: What’s it like to design in NYC compared to somewhere in the Middle East? Abboud: It’s more complicated to build in Dubai due to the approval process, but at the end of the day it’s faster because developers are able to sell up to 50% of their project in the early stages, before the permit is even out. This lets them make ballsier moves. 72 • Resident • April 2016

EDD: What’s the scoop on 45 Park? Abboud: It’s a 667-foot tower with stupendous views of Midtown and Upper Manhattan, with all of TriBeCa like a carpet under you. We have four full-floor apartments, which is a very rare, loft-type feature, in new developments and towers.

EDD: Do you think that it’s going to change the look of TriBeCa? Abboud: It’s definitely going to be a milestone in the redevelopment of that area. The area is shifting into a more lively, mixed-use neighborhood. Originally, it was only office buildings and now residential buildings are coming in. Lower Manhattan’s character is evolving and changing.

EDD: Your project The One at Palm in Dubai is marketed as the most expensive property in the Middle East ever. What was the inspiration behind that? Abboud: The client wanted to do something very abnormal—to provide almost an equal amount of outdoor space as indoor space for each of the 90 units. The penthouse is unique because it’s massive—we’re talking about 20k SF of indoor area and another 20k SF of outdoor area. Additionally, it’s completely detached from the structure of the building. It’s literally hovering on top of the building and does not share any common walls or floors with the rest of the units. Plus, it has panoramic views all around and 18-foot ceilings.

70 COLUMBUS

IN DOWNTOWN JERSEY CITY LEASING AT A RECORD PACE

0 Columbus has burst onto the downtown Jersey City residential scene, setting a new benchmark for leasing velocity with 60% of the 545 rental residences leased in the first four months. The new 50-story tower developed by Ironstate Development Company and Panepinto Properties adjacent to the Grove Street PATH Station has successfully attracted residents from both sides of the Hudson River and beyond with a combination of modern residences, incredible social spaces and commuter convenience. The fast-paced leasing activity, managed by exclusive leasing and marketing agent, The Marketing Directors, also reflects the rise of Jersey City as one of the region’s hottest residential destinations. “Jersey City has become far more than just a value alternative to Manhattan and Brooklyn, and today is flourishing with new restaurants, culture and street life that foster a vibrant, urban lifestyle experience,” said Michael Barry, President of Ironstate Holdings. “Our location at the entrance of the Grove Street PATH Station offers an opportunity to create something modern, innovative and design-driven that would resonate with the growing resident base and become an asset to the City. It’s great to see that vision become a reality.”

78 • Resident • April 2016

The development team tapped Gwathmey, Siegel, Kaufman Architects (GSKA) to design 70 Columbus as an iconic addition to the neighborhood. The tower’s contemporary design, including dramatic window-bay columns that project from the building, is visually striking from all angles while maximizing unobstructed views of the Hudson River, downtown Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Common areas and indoor social spaces by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance embody the famed Parisian designer’s unique aesthetic which is deeply rooted in his embrace of nature, color and shapes. These include a full-time attended signature lobby with fireplace lounge, a chic resident lounge and a children’s playroom, all of which are served by complimentary Wi-Fi. Residents also enjoy a 60,000 square-foot landscaped roof deck complete with a pool and private daybeds, sport court, grilling stations, a children’s playground and a dog run. 70 Columbus’ street-level retail space comprises a 30,000 squarefoot Base Gym and a soon-to-open market that will offer natural and organic foods. Onsite parking is available. “70 Columbus has proven to be the most soughtafter residential property in Jersey City,” said Jacqueline Urgo, President of The Marketing Directors. “It has significantly elevated this vibrant neighborhood

to a new standard while providing a fresh and creative new lifestyle choice for residents.” A collection of studios, one- and two-bedroom residences was designed for 70 Columbus to help enhance residents’ lifestyles. Airy, light-filled interiors feature oak wood floors, sleek kitchens with stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops and porcelain tile floors; oversized windows that frame the New York City skyline views while bathing the homes in natural light, and washer and vented dryer included in each home. Monthly rents currently start at $2,410 for studios, $2,850 for one-bedroom apartments and $3,950 for two-bedroom residences. Located at 70 Christopher Columbus Drive in the heart of the Grove Street neighborhood of downtown Jersey City, 70 Columbus offers residents easy access to Manhattan via the adjacent Grove Street PATH Station. The building is just steps from an eclectic array of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops, including Newark Avenue where a portion of the bordering street has been transformed into a pedestrian-only thoroughfare with a number of new hot spots. MEET THE TASTEMAKER By: Hillary Latos

F

or Brett Berish, developing liquor brands runs in the genes. His father was the former Chairman at Jim Beam and his brother managed the marketing budgets for high profile liquor brands. So it was a natural progression for the father and sons to launch Sovereign Brands- a family run business that has successfully created, launched and built some of the world’s most luxurious boutique brands such as Armand de Brignac and D’USSE which have since been acquired. The company has continued to innovate with unique brands, including Luc Belaire, a family of French sparkling wines and Bumbu, the Original Craft Rum which takes the approach of wine making to crafting an aged rum. Here we speak to Brett Berish, a force behind the creation. For Brett, first and foremost it’s the liquid but it has to work together with the packaging. He combs the world in search of a family partner who can produce a truly exceptional product. Their next step is to design everything in house from the name to the packaging. Each week they sit with their 60 employees to taste new concoctions and brainstorm over everything from name generation to the label and packaging design and brainstorm over what resonates with their consumer. He feels that bouncing ideas around friends and family first is a more organic approach to creating a successful brand rather than overthinking it like some of the bigger companies. Though they have a proven track record of developing brands that are later acquired by larger companies, Berish asserts that they never gone into this thinking we are going to sell it. ‘We have no hobbies, we love what we do, it’s about building great brands. To me when we’re approached to sell a brand it’s just a testament to what we are doing. I treat everything like a little baby, and at some point maybe someone can do something else with it. What makes their collection so unique? ‘We believe what we have is better than anyone else and customers can taste it. That’s where we win. Everything we do is very organic. We want to feel like I’ve found something special and consumers feel like they’ve discovered it and they want to talk about it.’ For his latest project, Bumbu rum, Berish applied their wine knowledge and to the rum category, just like grapes are to wine, Bumbu rum is culled from sugar cane from 8 countries each which have a unique flavor to each country. It’s all word of mouth and demand driven. We’re just touching the surface on where we can go. Sovereignbrands.com

DINING OUT

April 2016

As we transition out of winter, chefs have introduced new offerings to reflect the bounties of springcreating new dishes that infuse seasonal herbs and vegetables into their classic menus. We’ve had a chance to explore New York’s culinary scene from haute Japanese to contemporary Italian, classic seafood and steakhouse fare to elevated comfort food. In NYC there is truly something to satiate every gastronomic craving.

Sushi Seki A testament to the popularity of Sushi Seki’s fine cuisine, their third outpost has just opened in Hell’s Kitchen in the heart of the theater district. Significantly bigger than the Upper East Side boite, the West 46 street location exudes the same minimalist Zen aesthetic that spans 2 floors with the sushi bar upstairs and main dining area downstairs replete with tatami rooms, a communal table and 12 ‘Chef’s table’ seats overlooking the kitchen. Chef Edward Wijaya and Chef Seki showcase their extraordinary talents in their delicate and artful kaiseki menu that takes the diner on an otherworldly culinary journey through haute Japanese cuisine. This is only matched by the exquisite sakes selected by the sake sommelier Yasuyuki Suzuki. Seki’s creativity might have placed the restaurant on the map but their cocktails are taking them to new heights. Sushiseki.com

City Lobster & Steak Stepping into the 4,700 square foot brasserie style restaurant, you would be greeted not just by the cheerful hostess but with a gigantic tank of live North Atlantic lobsters. Given its ideal location between Rockefeller Center and the Theater district, this seafood centric steakhouse is aimed at attracting theatregoers with their fresh seafood and high quality steak as well as a pre theater menu. Though they are famous for their bounty of fresh lobsters, King Crab Legs and crispy golden Maryland Lump Crab Cake, City Lobster & Steak also serves a range of prime dry aged steaks. Their happy hour is also popular with the after work crowd that comes for their bargain priced specials such as a 1/2 dozen oysters and a pint of beer for only $12 and 99 cents oysters that are served at the bar. Citylobster.com

Frankie & Johnnie’s With a history that began during the days of Prohibition, Frankie & Johnnies was once THE after hours speakeasy and hangout for the who’s who in the Broadway world. Frankie was the secret password to enter and Johnny was the confirmation- hence the moniker. To keep the strong heritage of its theater heritage, it was only befitting that they open their new location in the heart of the theater district on 46th between 8th and 9th Avenues. Since the end of prohibition, the restaurant transformed to a steakhouse institution known for its steaks and chops which are cooked to perfection. Other noteworthy dishes include the tuna tartare with white soy and ginger, oysters Rockefeller, smoked Applewood bacon, and housemade burrata and tomatoes all of which will reassert their position as one of top steakhouses in the city. Louie & Chan Located on the Lower East Side, the restaurant reflects the confluence of Little Italy and Chinatown, with contemporary Italian cuisine served upstairs and Asian inspired cocktails in the club below. One of the specialties of the house is their wood fired thin crust pizzas with creative toppings such as spicy blue crab and artichoke puree or wild mushrooms and truffle oil. It is no wonder patrons keep coming back for unique dishes such as the tagliatelle served with sea urchin, caviar, and spicy cucumber. Situated beneath the bustling restaurant is 303 Club which is designed like a speakeasy with a separate entrance and different DJs setting the vibe. Every Tuesday step back in time to their weekly Roaring Twenties parties with flappers, live music and burlesque, and patrons are anachronistically dressed to the nines. Louieandchan.com

Da Claudio NYC Ristorante e Salumeria When Barbarini Alimentari & Mercato was destroyed by Super Storm Sandy, co-owners Claudio and Linda Marini conceived their newest brainchild, Da Claudio on the historic Ann Street in the Financial District. Having the feel of a contemporary Italian trattoria with modern Italian furnishings, high ceilings, banquettes and a salumeria upfront, Claudio Marini stuck to his Italian roots to curate a selection of authentic cured meats and cheeses imported from Italy. He also oversees the kitchen to ensure that every dish is made in the same fashion as it would be in Northern Italy. Be sure to try some of the specials of the day including a housemade tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms and truffle, lasagna with wagyu beef and béchamel, and squid ink linguine with prawns and a spicy tomato sauce. Leave room for the rich desserts such as tiramisu or house made gelato. Daclaudionyc.com

Avenida Cantina What was formerly New York’s most famous after hours underground club in the 80s and early 90s, Save the Robots, has been completely transformed into a colorful Tex Mex joint that still retains a sliver of the original brick wall from its former life. The owner, a famous rapper from Austin, was craving true Tex Mex, which ironically is an American bastardization of Mexican food, and created a menu filled with plenty of crave worthy comfort food options. Reasonably priced and generously proportioned elevated comfort food are served into the wee hours of the night. The downstairs club has been remodeled into The Mockingbird Bar that features live music, potent margaritas, mezcal elixirs, and turns into a party scene Tuesday through Sunday until 3 am. Avenida Cantina has been warmly received by its neighbors. Avenidacantina.com

Bounce Sporting Club As brunches have become a weekend institution amongst New Yorkers, Bounce Sporting Club has launched a series, Not Your Basic Brunch, every Saturday that lives up to its name. Executive Chef Sean Olnowich serves decadent brunch favorites that are designed to cure even the worst hangovers. Calorific renditions of classic brunch fare include cornflake crusted rum soaked French toast, beer braised short rib hash, and the Notorious B.R.G. made with 3 La Frieda patties with banana Jameson soaked buns, maple pork belly, cheddar cheese, truffled hash browns and Hollandaise sauce. If that weren’t enough of a cure, wash it down with a potent brunch cocktail designed by mixologist Spencer Elliott. Bounceny.com

The posh restaurant previously located in Astoria where it was a local favorite, reopened in Paper Factory Hotel back in 2014 after a twoyear hiatus. Mundo, established in 2005, is famed for its effortless blend of global influences. With a dash of Mediterranean influence and a pinch of Latin efficacy, Mundo presents their sumptuous and

palatable international homemade dishes. The Latin-Mediterranean fusion joint believes their restaurant should not be defined by a specific cuisine because there is nothing wrong with blending the exotic cuisines and cultures together. With easy recipes, meshed with top of the crop ingredients, along with the finest execution of their chefs, it is no wonder their guests constantly return craving for more. Their tapas such as the famous Red Sonja and cheese rolls clearly reflects their core concept.

Mundo now boasts a fancy two-level space with decor that includes a tower of vintage books, a state-of-the-art printing machine and a mind blowing light collection with pieces from all around the globe. Within the walls of this industrial-chic area, the classy restaurant can transform to a booming night spot with a snap of the fingers. ANDREA CORREALE Elegant Affairs: Celebrity Caterer

f you’ve attended Mariah Carey’s and Nick Cannon’s Hamptons wedding celebration, Billy Joel’s Fourth of July party, P. Diddy’s white fete, or events hosted by, Ivanka Trump Jewelry, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany or Google, you’ve seen Elegant Affairs in action from NYC to Montauk. You’ve also probably seen proprietor Andrea Correale share her food and entertaining tips on CBS, NBC, Fox, HGTV and multiple Bravo TV shows. But even if you don’t rub shoulders with celebrities, CEOs and fashion designers, the catering and events planning firm also helps design flawless weddings, bar mitzvahs, and all types of parties for the rest of us.

The Gold Coast Correale started her business at age 16, out of her parents’ house, and by the time she graduated college, she had 500 clients, and 45 people working for her. In the early years she designed parties in large homes and estates on Long Island’s Gold 90 • Resident • April 2016

Coast. One of her signature trademarks is her elegant presentation. She bought the most beautiful equipment and serving pieces she could find. “Not the typical catering things, like chafing dishes, or anything ordinary,” she says. “When I went into somebody’s home, I would be looking at the chandelier or the drapes in the dining room, or wherever we were putting the food, and everything would be beautiful. It looked as if they had cooked it themselves and that a lot of thought was put into matching the current décor or feeling of the home. And it was a niche that I had, so I gained a good reputation.” The Glen Cove, L.I. based company operates out of a state-of-the-art, 8,000-square foot facility with a staff of 30, including 12 full time chefs, plus 200-part time employees. Elegant Affairs handles everything from catering to full service event planning, including venue selection, wait staff, sound, lighting, flowers, music, and rentals, like tents and electrical generators for outdoor parties. Despite her success, she never rests on her laurels. “I’m always looking for the

next thing. Where do we need to improve?” explained Andrea.

Foods to Go Elegant Affairs also has a Foods To Go service, which provides catering without the staff, for clients throwing smaller parties. “In this situation, they’re just getting the Elegant Affairs cuisine with no frills,” Correale says. But the advantage is that they provide foods, like fine small passed hors d’oeuvres, that you can’t normally find in gourmet stores. She says. Clients are looking for local and farm-stand products to serve at their parties. “People are concerned about where their chicken and beef is coming from, so we are putting grass-fed beef, organic free-range chicken, and organic vegetables on menus,” Correale says. “It’s much more about the quality of the ingredients, and the freshness, than it is about overabundance.” elegantaffairscaterers.com • (212) 991-0078

CHECKING IN A Luxury Family Affair

he Grand Velas, set along Mexico’s Pacific coast in the beautiful state of Nayarit has become my favorite all-inclusive resort. Their spacious all-suite accommodations range from 1,000 square feet to an indulgent 4,700-foot Presidential Suite, all with contemporary and well-appointed furnishings, balconies and upscale bath amenities. Every room faces the beautiful Banderas Bay with the scenic Sierra Madre mountain chain located in the distance. It’s a luxury resort (Grand Velas is a AAA Five Diamond property) that accepts children of all ages, yet still manages to keep the vibe sophisticated and serene. It’s great for families, singles and honeymoon couples, and perhaps the only place I have visited where all types of vacationers can harmoniously coexist. There’s a 3-tied infinity pool, each with a different water temperature, 4 gourmet restaurants, a kid’s club, a new teenage lounge (more on that later), and a beautiful spa with 20 treatment rooms and a menu offering an array of holistic treatments. The resort has a boutique feel with 267 rooms, the beach is pristine and the waters offer frequent sightings of migrating whales, schools of dolphin, and sea turtles. Their four signature restaurants (French, Mexican, Italian and International) have all been applauded for their high-end gourmet dining and the all-inclusive wine list is more extensive than guests might anticipate. The newest addition to the resort is a high-tech $300,000 Teen Center. A lounge that would make any adult jealous, this spacious lounge features air hockey, foosball, ping pong and pool tables, video game systems Xbox and PS3, seats with built in speakers and individual cubicles with a 40” LED TV. In the evening hours there’s a disco dance floor with surround sound and karaoke machine. Truth be told, I visited this gem of a “playroom” a few times as thunderstorms and torrential rains swept through the region for two days. The teen center welcomed all adults and the space became a fun-filled center for everyone. Offsite, the region of Nayarit offers activities from whale watching to zip lining, great for all ages. To some it up, there is nothing more magical than a stay at the Grand Velas where the margaritas are endless, the crowd is sophisticated and accommodations luxurious. So whether you’re looking for great food, top-notch entertainment for your kids, or a spa that will blow you away, Fiesta Americana fits the bill.

However, guests can rent cabanas, relax on padded lounge chairs, and the staff provides unlimited towels, sunscreen, and service via Segways on the beach.

As you enter the hotel, the friendly staff welcomes guests with a warm “Bon Bini”, the local Papiamento greeting, which enhances the authentic island experience. The deluxe resort features 320 spacious rooms which are certainly some of the nicest you will find in Aruba. Room amenities include state of the art bathrooms, ultra modern 46 inch Samsung TV’s, mini L couches, signature snug Ritz-Carlton featherbeds, plush bathrobes, Nespresso coffee machines, a full bath and shower, a daily cheese and grape platter to snack on, and private balconies with spectacular views of the Caribbean sea.

If you are looking for something to do there are a plethora of activities including a small 24-hour casino, a variety of upscale shops for vacationers to enjoy, a kid’s club, fitness center, and 13-treatment-room spa with a unique oxygen bar treatment. If you are looking to partake in watersports, the resort provides access to all ocean activities like tubing and jet skiing; paddle boarding is complimentary for all guests. Also, the beach at the Ritz has a strong Caribbean breeze, and is the location for an annual windsurfer tournament.

The dining at the Ritz-Carlton Aruba is exceptional. Two restaurants you must visit are BLT Steak and Solanio. The menu at BLT

is similar to that of the one in the United States, which gives an at-home type dining experience; the popovers are to die for, the filet is superb, and the burrata is perfection. Solanio boasts typical Italian cuisine for dinner and a buffet style like breakfast. I recommend the lobster ravioli. Casual dining options include the Divi Bar located in the main lobby of the hotel, which serves drinks, sushi, and appetizers. Or opt for the poolside grill for lunch at the Madero Latin Grill, with many different options. Overall the Ritz-Carlton Aruba is a remarkable destination close to popular destinations and local nightlife. In addition to the beautifully appointed luxury rooms and suites, a healthy mix of activities, and upscale dining, the resort will create an unforgettable stay. With its pristine beaches and beautiful landscape, guests will revel in a new standard of luxury and elegance that characterizes one of the finest Aruba 5 star hotels. Ritzcarlton.com

Quito

QUITO

A JOURNEY TO THE MIDDLE EARTH

Q

uito is the variable and fascinating capital of Ecuador perched on the foothills of the South American Andes mountain range. Lying perpendicular to the sun directly on the Earth’s equator, there are no changes in seasons, and the weather can be quite sporadic and change very quickly depending on the altitude you are on. Up to 1K meters above sea level you will experience warm summer-like weather while altitudes between 1K- 2K meters above sea level deliver springtime 110 • Resident • April 2016

weather, if you venture 2K- 3K meters above sea level expect the breezy fall like weather, and when you go above 3K meters the climate mimics that of winter. Aside from the often unpredictable weather, Quito is quite charming. Picture a town of colorful houses that sit on multiple peaks and valleys with the beautiful and scenic backdrop of the Andes Mountains and cloud forests. Declared one of the first World

Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1978, the city is home to various museums, picturesque plazas and impressive architecture. Start your walking tour in the old town where you will find the majority of the historical sites, official government buildings, grand baroque gold encrusted cathedrals, traditional eateries, and craft shopping. At the center of the old town in Quito is La Ronda which is a preserved cobblestone pedestrian street

The city’s New Town features modern architecture, Quito’s financial district, and high-end designer shopping. One of the most popular destinations in the new town is the splashy Quicentro Sur shopping mall. Outside of the city center, there are numerous things to do, and due to Quito’s ever changing altitudes, each destination is vastly different. Twenty minutes or so outside of the city center is a monument that marks the middle of the earth or the equator where the latitude is exactly 0 0’ 0”. On the equator, you can easily balance an egg on a nail, and due to the gravitational pull on the equator you weigh less. To explore the Andes in style embark on the Tren Crucero, a luxury train with a colonial old world style. In true historic fashion, the train’s four coaches are pulled by steam and diesel locomotives. As you head into the picturesque Andes mountains, take in the fresh air from the train’s open air terrace. One thing to note is that you are traveling over seven miles above sea level so adjusting to the altitude may be a challenge for some. Another dreamy excursion from Quito is the beautiful cloud forest which is surrounded by thick clouds that almost resemble a fog that is three hours away. Stay at the ethereal Mashpi eco lodge, named as one of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World. Located in the Equatorial Chocó BioRegion, the lodge’s floor to ceiling windows seamlessly

frequented by locals and tourists. During the day, you may stumble upon storefront workshops of hand-weaved Panama hats (a fashion staple amongst the locals) and craftsmen creating everything from hand carved wooden toys to indigenous golden trinkets. You will also be able to take in the local street games, and even try it for yourself. At night, La Ronda comes alive and becomes one of the most bustling areas of the city.

meld the outside world of nature indoors with their minimalist and contemporary décor in warm earth tone hues. Activities include, bird watching, hiking, waterfall excursions, butterfly farm visits, a single bike that allows you to pedal across a zip line rope over the forest, or indulge in a spa treatment as you take in your natural surroundings. Whether you are looking for a getaway to the city, a journey to the middle of the earth, or seeking a retreat into a natural forest- you can experience it in Quito. Now getting to the region is much easier thanks to JetBlue which offers direct flights between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL) and Quito, Ecuador (UIO). The airliner has been garnering accolades from customers thanks to their outstanding array of complementary amenities including unlimited snacks and soft drinks, first-run Hollywood movies, and free wifi service that includes partnerships with Amazon, Harpercollins, and The Wall Street Journal. JetBlue also offers the most legroom in coach based on average fleet-wide seat pitch for U.S. airlines. Dave Clark, vice president network planning at JetBlue stated “Quito is one of the fastest growing destinations in Latin America and a world-class tourism destination. We are thrilled to bring our award-winning service and low fares to this underserved market.” Whatever you are looking for Quito is undoubtedly something to behold. Jetblue.com

Though Canada is best known for their Ice Wine and festivals around this sweet nectar, the Ontario region also produces a wide mix of vintages including Chardonnays, Rieslings, Pinot Noirs, Cabernet Francs and more. Ontario is home to nearly 100 wineries, a region comprised of three primary grape-growing regions including Lake Erie North Shore, Niagara Peninsula, and Prince Edward County, all of which have something unique to offer. One of the universal reasons for visiting Ontario wine country is to “Relax.” Here you can enjoy a tasting at a local farmer’s market, cycle to vineyards and wineries as you get lost on off the beaten path trails, partake in one of Niagara’s internationally acclaimed grape and wine industry festivals, or marvel at one of the wonders of the world- Niagara Falls which has a better vantage point from the 112 • Resident • April 2016

If you are a foodie, the region is undergoing a culinary movement. Skilled chefs are connecting with farmers, artisan bakers, cheese makers, honey producers, specialty butchers to deliver farm-to-table experiences. Many vineyards now feature on-site restaurants where tasting menus reflect the distinctive flavors particular to each appellation such as the Kitchen 76 located in the breathtaking Tuscan Style Two Sisters Vineyard at Niagara on the Lake. Another noteworthy stop is at the Peller Estates Winery where visitors can experience the chill of ice wine making. Slip into a down parka and step into the 10 Below Peller Ice Wine Lounge where temperatures are a chilly 10 degrees C below all year round. Sip

some of their finest ice wines produced in this igloo like lounge constructed of 29,000 pounds of ice complete with an ice lounge bench and ice chandelier. Planning a wine route is best done utilizing the tools on Wine County Ontario’s website, as there are many intricacies involved in crafting a wine trail that suits your taste. The website is an excellent resource for selecting wineries to visit, learning how winery tours usually operate, and tips on choosing wine to sample. Although you can visit wine country by train, bike, bus or helicopter, the reality is that most visitors travel around wine country by car. Local vineyards also offer walking tours of their grapevines and facilities, where you can learn the history of the winery and witness their production of this year’s vintages first hand, and of course sample an array of their finest wines! THE 14TH FACTORY By Nathalie Barclay

“How can I use my life positively to impact others? How can I contribute? How can I interconnect? How can I do something good with my life?” For Simon Birch, these are driving questions that have come to shape his artistic career over the years. Originally from Brighton, England, Birch moved to Hong Kong in 1997 in the aftermath of the death of one of his closest friends. Starting as a construction worker, he eventually worked his way up through sheer perseverance to becoming an artist. “When no one would give a break, I just kept going and created opportunities myself, and then eventually had some success.” Birch’s success is most notable within the Hong Kong artistic scene. He credits this with the belief that he has “developed as a sort of big fish in a small pond is this tiny little city.” Many of his works are inspired by the people and culture of Hong Kong, especially his daring series of paintings of the Chinese mafia. They are also often characterized by his representation of the captivating movement and acute sense of pain of his subjects. Constantly playing with different mediums and techniques, these recurring themes evolve and change with every piece, whether it be an oil painting, a film or an installation. “It is an organic procession, from year to year, project to project.” However, while it may be true that he has known the most success in Hong Kong, his work has transcended boundaries and is now internationally recognized. Coming to New York, Birch will be introducing his newest project in April: located in a massive old building on Wall Street, it consists of fourteen installations in procession and is over 150,000 square feet. Though filled with excitement over the big revelation of his new project, he describes the nervewracking process of integrating himself in New York: “Here, I’m completely unknown, so there is a huge dynamic shift from how I relate to Hong Kong and how I relate to New York. In New York, I’m just some dude who’s kind of just turned up.” Despite his apprehension, Birch is eager to share his largest project to date, “The 14th Factory,” which he hopes will be an intensely interactive and immersive art experience. “New York said: ‘Well, if you’re prepared to work hard a little bit, we’ll let you do your project.’ And we worked hard and here we are.” Following an auction at the close of the exhibit, Birch will be donating 100% of the proceeds to NGO’s supporting disadvantaged children and innercity youth.

THE POWER SWIPE The Ins and Outs of Finding Love in the City of the

A

s our cell phones now handle everything in our lives from the utilitarian to the hedonistic, everything that we need to get by throughout the day can be conveniently taken care of with the right apps and a few simple swipes. New Yorkers are notoriously impatient with a penchant for immediate gratification, and today’s dating apps fill that insatiable need for the BBD- bigger, better deal, and have become the norm for finding love in the Big Apple. Like anything in life, some are better than others depending on what you are looking for and here we weigh in on the good, the bad, and the blatant truth behind the swipe from New York’s most popular dating apps:

Happn - Happen upon a one night stand or a chance at love. Remember the commercial where two attractive people spot each other for the first time on the subway. But the doors close as the gazes linger as two lovestruck strangers rely on fate to cross paths in the future. But what if you could easily pull up each other’s profile instead, Happn, is your answer to find all the single users that you have ever crossed paths with but were too shy to talk to. With 13M+ users globally, New York City is Happn’s largest U.S. market. Grand Central Terminal, Herald Square and Union Square are among the top locations where Happn users cross paths. www.happn.com

Bumble -

Men take the easy way out. Again.

On this app, women have to make the first move, and men have to do virtually nothing. Unless you want to start a relationship off where the man is responsible for absolutely zilch, then this app is for you! “I just put my picture up and the girls contact me if they’re interested. It’s a sure thing I’m getting laid.” said Brian, an avid, happy Bumble user. Don’t be surprised if they expect you to pay on the first date. In other words, to the left, to the left! www.bumble.com

OKCupid - If you play your cards right, you’ll be engaged by Valentine’s Day.

Ladies, if you’re looking for a relationship then this is the app for you. This app has the most attractive men, and they’re not your common gigolo player. It works through an algorithm matching formula

based on your preferences and boasts a successful match rate between 60-90%. Most of the men filtered to me are in Finance, Tech or IT guys with advanced degrees. Definitely dating material on this site! www.okcupid.com

Match - When you’ve run out of options. Though Match.com is the most popular online dating site in the U.S., it does live up to its guarantee to “make love happen.” It has the largest paid user base of any other dating site but tends to skew towards “desperate old people” as one millennial explained. Though the reach is broad everyone can find a match but then no one matches. www.match.com

Tinder - Best looking men and MBA’s Hands down the best looking men and MBA’s (Married But Availables) online. You will find the most attractive men here but the majority are players

or have another life somewhere on the other side of the river. So tread lightly! Since Tinder is purely based on looks,Tinder is a great app to find a hot casual date with a compatible stranger. Chances of a serious relationship: 2% Chances of a lay anytime: 98%. www.gotinder.com

Eharmony - Born Again Virgins Need Apply Unless you’re Mormon, born again, or into significant others with mental problems, steer clear of eHarmony. Be prepared to fill out pages and pages of questions only to find out your perfect match is 50 miles away? You can’t filter within less than 30 miles. Do you really want to start your formidable dating as long distance? Besides the confusing layout and religious focus, you’re stuck as a member for months whether you like it or not. The Second Act

powerful portrayal continues in this Tony-award winning play, as a new cast takes the stage to display the evolution of storytelling. Fun Home, based on Alison Bechdel’s bestselling graphic memoir, is showcasing key new cast members including Michael Cerveris, Jim Stanek, Lauren Patten, Gabriella Pizzolo, Roberta Colindrez, Zell Steele Morrow, Joel Perez and Oscar Williams. Veterans Judy Kuhn and Beth Malone preserve in their respective roles. The impact of this heart-wrenching theatrical experience performed at the Circle in the Square Theater, has only matured after winning the Tony. In keeping with its no-holds-barred boundary pushing mantra, the show recently welcomed a group of UN ambassadors representing countries globally in an effort to further LGBT issues worldwide, culminating with a powerful discussion with activist and actor, Cynthia Nixon. The show is told from the perspective of Alison during three stages of her life: childhood, college and middle age. Beth Malone, who originated the role of adult Alison, delivers a powerful performance as the glue that holds it altogether, poignantly touching upon those painful memories of adolescence, how she struggled with her own sexuality and how she eventually felt after her father’s suicide and the revelation that he, too, was gay. The theater becomes home itself and brings the story to life as every member of the audience is immersed in this family’s world. We live through all of their joy and their pain, to ultimately come to the sad realization that words unspoken can be ever more dangerous than ones shouted out loud.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical You go to the show for the songs, but you stay for the story, or that’s at least how I felt about the thoughtful production of Beautiful, directed by Marc Bruni and staged at the Stephen Sondheim Theater. One might think it would be a wildly arduous task to take on the iconic role of living legend Carole King in any shape or form, particularly following Jessie Mueller who won a Tony for the same role, but Chilina Kennedy, singersongwriter in her own right, makes it look easy. This score is one so powerful that you can’t help but choke back tears as the audience relives the music of husband and wife songwriter duo Gerry Goffin and Carole King and their fiercest competitors and eventually best friends, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Arguably, the two most poignant moments of the play were delivered by Kennedy and signified the changes in King’s life. Firstly when she reprises “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” during the beginning of the end of her marriage to Goffin, and secondally when she learns to find her own voice with “It’s Too Late Baby”. There’s a reason why Beautiful has broken box office records; it’s a narrative we can all relate to. The fact that we can identify with it amidst a score of songs that defined a generation, makes it even more poignant.

NEW BROADWAY PLAYS The Humans, Our Mother’s Brief Affair, & Hughie

P

laywright Stephen Karam has been winning accolades and his new work, The Humans, makes clear what the fuss is about. This is a comedy-drama that achieves both sides of the equation in a production skillfully directed by Joe Mantello. Brigid (Sarah Steele), and her boyfriend, Rich (Arian Moayed), have just moved into a duplex apartment in a tenement building in Chinatown. Her parents, Erik (Reed Birney) and Deirdre (Jayne Houdyshell) come from Scranton, Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving dinner, with their other daughter (a lesbian lawyer with colitis, facing problems on the job as well as a failed romance), played by Cassie Beck and Erik’s mother (who is in a wheelchair and suffers from dementia) (played by Lauren Klein). The play is suffused with humor and sadness even if the ending is a bit of a letdown. For those who want to see a compelling new American play, this should be on your shortlist. Richard Greenberg has written brilliant plays (such as Take Me Out), enjoyable ones (e.g., The Assembled Parties) but sometimes he strikes out. Our Mother’s Brief Affair starts out pleasantly enough but then takes a desperately wrong turn. 122 • Resident • April 2016

To put it bluntly, this is a memory play you might not want to remember. The play’s greatest asset is its star, Linda Lavin as the mother in question. She plays a Long Island housewife named Anna, who has two adult children: the twins Seth and Abby.

She is on her deathbed and reveals a love affair she had many years earlier and the scenes between her and her lover are reenacted on stage. It’s when the man’s identity is revealed that a real life incident from the Cold War is thrown into the mix, fodder for some cheap jokes.

Greenberg has not forgotten how to write witty dialogue but, in this instance, he has failed to work it into a coherent play. Lavin is delightful but neither she nor director Lynne Meadow can save Our Mother’s Brief Affair. Hughie is a revival of a minor work by Eugene O’Neill. A two character play, running about one hour without intermission, it’s mostly a monologue. The title character (a hotel clerk) has died before the action begins. In a decaying Manhattan hotel (a wonderful set by Christopher Oram), a broken down gambler named Erie Mills speaks to Hughie’s replacement about the deceased. When the play begins, Mills is returning from a five-day drinking binge he went on when his friend died. Hughie was a family man and Mills is an outsider, a braggart who spins tales about his exploits with women and his occasional good luck at the track. He was attracted to Hughie because he was able to pass himself off as a success to the gullible fellow. In Mills’ words, “[I]f every guy along Broadway who kids himself was to drop dead there wouldn’t be nobody left.” Forest Whitaker makes his long awaited Broadway debut as Mills and the always excellent Frank Wood is the hotel clerk who is a good listener. The estimable Michael Grandage directed, but the play somehow feels less haunted than the set. Hopefully, Whitaker will return in a work that is better geared to his talents.

Never Not Broken

By David M. Ortmann, LCSW

NEVER NOT BROKEN an alternative perspective on holding it all together

I

’ve avoided writing for weeks because I am shattered - emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. Writing will help, though I feel no good can come from a mind and heart this broken. Enter Hindu mythological figure Akhilandeshvari, the goddess of “never not broken,” meaning that when we’re lying on our bedroom floor, crying and screaming into that pile of dirty laundry, we are at our most powerful. Did I mention she rides a crocodile? The double negative of “never not broken” when translated from Sanskrit has Akhilanda “broken” down to her very name. Perhaps wholeness or complete integration is overrated, or simply unattainable? Does the power for transformation, for recreating ourselves, come from those scattered shards on the floor? We are constantly in a state of change, as is the universe around us, and thus limitless in our potential to be and to become. My sister died suddenly under mysterious circumstances ten months ago; the grieving process haunted by the taunting spectre of questions that remain, and will likely stay, unanswered. Eight weeks ago my relationship with a primary partner ended in trauma, distortion, and misunderstanding. Last week, my other primary partner abruptly aborted our, until that moment, increasingly evolving and loving relationship. Though my sister died ten months ago, these recent romantic whip lashings tore the fresh scabs of grief from my recovering spirit. I meditate, exercise, and have a spiritual life. I consult a therapist who’s raised me into authentic adulthood. I have friends, love, support, a career – a life worth living and being grateful for. But,

I am broken, and what will grow from this brokenness is unknown. Yet even from the vantage point of a dropped mirror, I realize two things: 1) my cleaning woman does a remarkable job on my hardwood floors, and 2) I’ll get through this and not only survive, but thrive and become whatever it is I’m becoming. As yogi and spiritual writer Julie Peters points out in her own musings about our crocodile riding goddess of broken, the choice of a crocodile is fascinating in that it represents our reptilian brain, which is directly connected to fear. We hide, deny, and even combat our fears, but our girl rides on her fears. She rides right in the face of myths about “holding it together” or “appearing strong.” I have fear writing this. We’re taught not to share our feelings – certainly not this deeply (or publicly). We New Yorkers have lifted appearing “always together” to an art form. Additionally, psychotherapists aren’t supposed to talk about their personal lives. I’m sure a patient or colleague will read this. Life is risk. Let it be, David. I am no longer on the floor. The sun is incandescent and Spring has sprung delightfully early in Manhattan. Before I tackle that laundry, I cheer you for embracing your brokenness and talking about it. Isolation and self-criticism can be poison. Cherish life’s inherent imperfections and keep on riding that crocodile!

You are, I am… We’re all going to be okay.

Meet Turbo, and Thank Him in Advance for Being the Inspiration for:

INVITE’S K-9 MULTIPLE VITAMIN TAGS FOR DOGS

O

ur Dogs are more than just our pets – they are family! And just like family, we want to keep ours as healthy and happy as humanly possible. Our fur babies require a basic level of vitamins and minerals in order to maintain optimal levels of health and happiness, just like we humans do. But for dogs these vitamins and minerals help to maintain good energy levels, a thick and shiny coat, clear eyes and a moist nose, for a fun free life. Our pets are regularly exposed to the worst possible toxins, chemicals, and contaminants. After all, they sniff their way around our neighborhoods, because that is what they do. They are more exposed then we are. They are ground level, and we are fortunate to wear shoes. They lick their paws and have direct contact with poisons. Their snouts are at the level where bus and cars are most concentrated. They run in parks and roll in the grass that has been treated with pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers. When they return to our homes, they clean their coats clean, which causes these chemicals and toxins to be absorbed into their bodies. This exposure and absorption creates the need for essential antioxidants and nutrients to 132 • Resident • April 2016

protect their health, replenish essential nutrients, and remove harmful pollutants from their bodies. Invite@Health, The Luxury Brand of Vitamins, known for their outstanding commitment to producing the most innovative and effective nutritional products on the market today, also offers a canine multivitamin Invite@ Health’s K-9 Multiple supplies powerful antioxidants which include Grape Seed Extract (free of the constituents in grapes that are harmful for dogs, but safe for humans), Catalase, and SOD, which help to protect your fur babies heart, liver, kidneys, brain and vision. This multivitamin also provides GSH (reduced Glutathione) needed for the detoxification of many drug metabolites, pollutants, and heavy metals, such as lead and arsenic.

tablets, and you can rest easy knowing that our dog’s basic levels of vitamins and minerals are being satisfied. We do want our dogs to live forever, but that is not about to happen. We want them to be healthy and happy, just like us. Everybody who reads my column should thank Turbo for his contribution to the pet world and the owner and developer of InVite who developed these vitamins when he saw Turbo slowing down.. As always check with your family vet and his approval before starting your pet on any regiment. Happy healthy barking to all. Invitehealth.com/dog-vitamins

Our dogs require good nutrition to support bone and joint health, just as humans do. InVite’s K-9 Multiple supplies Bromelain and Magnesium to support bone and joint health and comfort. Adding these specific nutrients to their diet in one delicious and nutritious beef-flavored tablet helps round out their protection. Your dogs will love these chewable beef flavored
