Another exciting year is underway.

Beginning Sept. 7, 2013, Waleska will welcome Eagles football, and our small town will never be the same. In our first home game we will face a strong Lindsey Wilson squad that went 7-3 last year. Our Eagles will be tested, but win or lose, we will support our young men and savor the excitement they bring to campus.

The fall will also mark several other beginnings.

Monument Sign Symbolizes Campus’ Warm Welcome

We will begin classes in our new science center. It has been under construction for the last year and doubles the space we have available for scientific instruction. It offers state-of-the-art scientific equipment and technology and, along with the renovations we have made to Dobbs Science Hall, will give Reinhardt science students the learning experiences they need to be successful.

Over Spring Break 2013, a new Main Campus sign was built at the intersection of Highways 140 and 108. With generous assistance from Sis Brown of Dalton, Ga., the wife of the late James Brown, a Reinhardt trustee for 30 years, the monument provides a warm welcome for visitors, alumni, students, faculty and staff.

We will open two new residence halls — Blue and Gold.

These two halls, along with Glenn H. and Marjorie Humphrey Hubbard Residence Hall we opened last year, will give us a new residential community of 196 people on the north side of campus.

I believe that Reinhardt is the most dynamic institution of learning in the state of Georgia, and I am not alone.

Again this fall, we will break our own record for enrollment as more students discover the unique combination of challenge and support that is Reinhardt University. Our beautiful campus, exciting programs, wonderful facilities and caring faculty offer students something often hard to find in today’s world: Education with Character.

We need your help in making the Reinhardt experience available to our students.

Reinhardt University offers “something often hard to find in today’s world: Education with Character.”

WALESKA will never be the SAME... “Excitement is at an all time high as we continue to coordinate efforts for the first games of our inaugural season,” said Bill Popp, director of athletics. “We have an expectation of large crowds from the Reinhardt family as well as the local community. It is hard to believe we are just weeks away from our very first game!”

Saturdays in Waleska this fall will be as they never were before. You will see fans sporting their best blue and gold attire as they walk to the new athletic stadium; you will smell hot dogs and hamburgers being cooked on warm grills by crews of spirited tailgaters; you will hear the sounds of the Marching Eagles belting out the new Reinhardt Fight Song and roars from the crowd as the football team takes the field. But most of all, you will feel the spirit and excitement created by the addition of football at Reinhardt. “Since the announcement of football was released, the students were thrilled about the concept!” said Maria Flores, a junior from Canton, Ga. and the SGA president. “Football is going to be a great way to bring the entire student body, faculty, staff and community together. Having football on campus will increase our school spirit and bring pride to the University in many ways, which is exactly what our students want to see!” The team has been practicing and scrimmaging since fall 2012, and consistency and cooperation have increased every day. “Our team had a good spring and improved greatly,” said Drew Cronic, assistant coach. “I know our guys will be very excited when we return for August Camp, especially since it will be one or two years since any of them played in a game. We have a good deal of talent, but we are very young and inexperienced. We must stay the course and learn how to weather some storms, but it will only make our team better in the long run.” Game-day operations are being coordinated to accommodate large crowds of fans, and the community has already shown full support for Reinhardt’s inaugural football squad. “Excitement is at an all time high as we continue to coordinate our efforts for our first games both on the road and at home for our inaugural season,” said Bill Popp, director of athletics. “Season ticket sales have gone well, and we have an expectation of very good crowds from the Reinhardt community as well as the surrounding community. It is hard to believe we are now just weeks away from our very first game!” The first Eagles game will be August 31 against Mercer University in Macon, Ga., while the first home game will be September 7 against Lindsey Wilson College. MARCH ON! HOMECOMING 2013! Taking the field this fall, Reinhardt’s first ever marching band, the Marching Eagles, will bring lively music and spirited chants to Reinhardt’s sporting events. With Band Director Rob Opitz, the Marching Eagles will boast 100+ members and be led by two talented drum majors. The Marching Eagles will kick off their inaugural season with one goal: to create an atmosphere of excitement in the stadium. This excitement will help draw large numbers of fans, involve them in cheering the Eagles to victory, and support the team in its first year of tradition building. We want to “make our Eagle Stadium a place opponents do not look forward to visiting,” said Opitz. “We are set to be the 12th man in the stands and to provide the spirit and entertainment our home fans will love and our visiting fans will envy.” The band will also play tunes in the stands that are guaranteed to get everyone involved in the spirit of the game. Opitz promises a halftime show that will have fans on their feet cheering for more! — LHT

Similar but different. Reinhardt shares many similarities with Mark Roberts’ previous institution, Virginia Intermont College, VI. Liberal arts based. Church-related. Focuses on educating the whole student. Places high value on student-faculty relationships. The differences between the two institutions, Reinhardt’s expanding graduate programs and diverse undergraduate majors, brought Roberts to Waleska. “I saw in Reinhardt a trajectory that I wanted to be part of,” he said. Roberts originally intended to be an English professor. He finished his degree and began publishing poetry and studying Appalachian literature and culture. During his career in college work, he transitioned from instructor to writing center director, professor, department chair and academic division chair. When he was asked to be VI’s vice president of academics, he accepted. “I didn’t realize how gratifying and rewarding this job would be. I didn’t know that I would like it... but I found a creative space in the administrative role that I didn’t

On April 22, 2013, a Chinese Scholar tree was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Robert L. Driscoll, who passed away on June 21, 2012. In his 10 years at Reinhardt, he served as an education professor, Price School of Education dean, and lastly the vice president and dean for academic affairs. "Bob was a Godly man in the best sense of what that term can mean,” said Dr. Donna Coffey, associate professor of English. “He was a man of God, a man of faith, not just because he walked around talk-

His family includes his wife, Kelley, a Nashville, Tenn., native. They have four children: Taylor, 23, a computer engineering major at Virginia Commonwealth University; Raynah, 16; Zoe, 14; and Jayden, 12. The Roberts’ family has relocated from Bristol, Va., to Canton, Ga. Roberts comes from a small town in east Tennessee, Maryville. As one of the first in his family to get a degree, he values education. “It wasn’t just handed to me. I had a desire to pursue it, and it’s changed my life in extremely positive ways. It’s enriched me. That’s why I do what I do. I want to provide that opportunity for other people.” — MSW

Bob allowed others to be who they were, and you allowed Bob to be who he was. You were a loving family to us... and Reinhardt will continue to be a special place for us.” In addition, the University’s annual Convocation of Artists and Schoolars has been renamed in Driscoll’s honor.—MSW

Five members of a Reinhardt Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) cohort sit together conversing before class starts. A large projection screen is stretched across the front of the room, and a camera is pointed in their direction. It’s 2 p.m. and class has now officially started, but there’s no instructor in sight. Within minutes, a ringing sound can be heard and on the screen pops the face of Dr. Georgann Toop, assistant professor of education. She is miles away from her preservice teaching students, but through the service of Skype, she is able to allow them to collaborate, interact and learn from a group of fifth graders in the STEM Academy at Clark Creek Elementary School in southwestern Cherokee County. “For this course, Science Inquiry Based Learning, Skyping created an opportunity for Reinhardt’s pre-service education students from both sites - Main and North Fulton - to come together as a community of learners to virtually visit the Clark Creek Elementary STEM Academy,” said Toop. “These master level education students were able to observe students in a STEM lab completing robotics lessons. I felt it was critical for the pre-service students to keep up with the current changes taking place in technology and science education that are offered in so few schools thus far.” Skyping is a web based program that allows users to communicate by voice, video and instant messaging. With up to 80 percent of all jobs now being created in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engi-

neering and Math), the understanding, use and real-world application or integration of technological skills will play a pivotal role in students’ lives. “Technology should play a vital role in meeting the needs of all our students from pre-service teachers at Reinhardt who are preparing to enter the teaching profession down to kindergartners — especially in the world of their future!” said Toop. “In order for our Reinhardt graduates to be successful in the workforce, we must provide them experiences with more advanced technology so that they, along with K-12 students, will be prepared for successful participation in our 21st Century global society.” During the hour-long Skype session, Reinhardt’s MAT students asked the young students and the STEM classroom teachers critical, thought-provoking questions. The Clark Creek teachers and students shared their expertise on STEM concepts and their real-world applications. “Within a short period of time and although miles apart, both Reinhardt and Clark Creek students went from not knowing one another to observing, interacting, learning, and collaborating with each other,” Toop said. “Skyping is a very easy way for us to collaborate with others — be it talking to experts, observing students’ work on projects in a classroom setting, asking teachers questions or sharing ideas and creating wonderful learning experiences with educators from around the globe.” — LHT

Francisco Cañas of the National Plan for Latino/Hispanic Ministry of the United Methodist Church, decided to sponsor this project. Thus, the Mi Familia Center: Serving Migrant Communities, Inc., was created with the mission of providing Christian hospitality to all of God’s children through various services. “Mi Familia provides essential services to migrant families to facilitate their social integration, participation, and contribution to the well being of our communities,” explained Martínez. “These services include support in and for immigration, academics, ministry, counseling and emergency care. “In March of 2012, Mi Familia Center, finally received its 501(3) not-for-profit status, and it has officially served the migrant community ever since, thanks to the contributions of increasing numbers of volunteers and the support of Reinhardt University!” he said.

In 2003, Reinhardt used its first grant from The Goizueta Foundation to launch The Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund, which provides financial support to deserving and needy Hispanic/Latino students. Recipients of this scholarship are selected by a faculty committee through a rigorous application and interview process. The scholarship helps fund a recipient’s education for the time he/she is enrolled at Reinhardt. To date, 10 students have benefitted from The Goizueta Foundation Scholars Award. In December 2012, Reinhardt received a new four-year grant of $400,000 from The Goizueta Foundation to fund scholarships for Hispanic/Latino students. As a result, Reinhardt was able to assist 10 additional students bringing the total number of Goizueta Foundation Scholars currently attending Reinhardt to 15. — KAJ

He is consistently on Reinhardt’s Dean’s List with a 3.9 grade-point average, and he is a Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund Award recipient. Beyond Reinhardt, Daniel volunteers at the Mi Familia Center where he teaches English as a second language. In addition, he was chosen for a class of 20, out of 5,000 applicants, to participate in the Training and Recruitment Initiative for Admission to Leading Law Schools (TRIALS), a residential scholarship program partnership of NYU School of Law, Harvard Law School and the Advantage Testing Foundation. For five weeks in summer 2012, he studied at the NYU School of Law and attended lectures at Harvard Law School and Princeton University. This past summer he continued his studies at Princeton where he completed a fellowship at the Public Policy & International Affairs Junior Summer Institute. — KAJ

letter and an ideal brought Eddie and Sylvia Robertson to Waleska in 1986. They had written to almost every Methodist and Presbyterian college in the U.S. looking for a teaching job for Ed. In the letter they explained the kind of life they wanted; one that was transparent and blended their faith, life and interests. The couple met at Alma College in Michigan, a campus like Reinhardt. After graduate school, they looked for a job at a small church-related college, but the timing wasn’t right. “Ed was offered a job in industry, so we went to industry, but periodically we would apply to colleges,” Sylvia said. As a research scientist, Ed worked with Mobil, a private engineering firm, and then Phillips. They had enjoyed material success, but they “wanted to live in with the students, the faculty, the staff, the colleagues of a college family,” she said. Ed was laid off at Phillips, so when the Reinhardt offer came, they took a leap of faith and moved on campus with “a 7th grader, a 4th grader, a dog, a cat and a rabbit.” The Robertsons quickly got settled. “Vic [Mitchell, a coach] and I played basketball together and beat the Pis,” Eddie laughed. “We brought back Jay Wallace (’85) as our ringer. My relationship to athletics and academics formed early. If there was a basketball player who skipped class at 10 o’clock, Gerald [Sharpe, a coach] would be sure she took penalty laps that afternoon. I learned early on that Reinhardt was built on relationships.” Sylvia joined the Reinhardt faculty a year later. She had been encouraged to apply for an Academic Support Office position, but as a clinical social worker, she didn’t think she was qualified. “I realized that with social work, you have flexibility and skills that you can apply across groups, and you build up whatever information

you need to serve a specific clientele. I was being asked at the college level to do something different... I could be the bridge to college.” She joined the ASO staff.. and stayed for 24 years. With ASO, she worked with college-able students with disabilities to provide appropriate services to help students achieve their educational goals. She advised, tutored and mentored students and taught sociology courses. For 26 years, Ed taught geology and various biology classes, including ecology, limnology, and microbiology. Both took on leadership and committee roles. She served a term as faculty chair and led the institutional effectiveness portion of a self-study. They chaired divisions. He was biology program chair and directed the Institute for Teaching Excellence. When they moved off campus in the early 1990s, they only went a block, and they have welcomed scores of students to their home on Grady Street. “The Phi Theta Kappa years,” Sylvia smiled. “Chartering Tri Beta. We looked for ways to honor academic achievement and be with students. Field trips. Conferences. Lots of picnics and luncheons here in the yard. As result, over the years, we’ve been invited to lots and lots of weddings,” she said. As the Robertsons reminisce, they finish each other’s sentences. Alumni names and stories, both recent and from years ago, are remembered easily because they are still in touch with the graduates - they know about degrees, jobs, and spouses. They are a team, and they often worked together to help students succeed. Sylvia tells of a student who was upset because Ed was encouraging her to go to Emory’s nursing school. She wanted to go but was terrified. “I sat down on the floor between them,” Sylvia said. “I put one hand on her knee and one hand on his knee. I said to her, ‘You talk,’ then I looked at him and

said, ‘You listen.’ After she had her say, I said, ‘Now you talk, Ed, and you listen.’ How many times did I sit between a faculty member and a student over the years? That’s what works. Relationships.” The Robertson’s marriage and their work in marriage enrichment are also central to their story. They walked hand in hand across campus. They took part in Real Deal (the weekly student-led worship service), attended athletic events and Spring Formals. “So many of our kids come from families that are blended or single parents,” Eddie said. “Here’s two old people who are still liking each other after 40 years. They are looking for that kind of relationship.” Over the years, they planned for life after Reinhardt. Sylvia retired in spring 2011 and Eddie in spring 2013. Though their official role within the Reinhardt family has changed, they aren’t abandoning Waleska. “The Vesper Violet House on Grady Street is still open,” she laughed. They will take trips to their Lake House in Michigan. Enjoy their grandchildren. Church picnics. Ed will garden and sell cut flowers in Canton as “the Flower Guy.” They have several marriage enrichment activities on the calendar. Year of China To provide a broader international experience for Reinhardt students, an area of the world is selected each year for exploration. 2012-2013 was devoted to China, and activities included a series of Talk and Teas where Reinhardt faculty talked about their research and travels. Other events included a Fall Festival with crafts and cultural activities; an exhibit of photos of China; participation in a dragon boat festival; and a halfday conference featuring lectures by two local experts on China. Through sales of T-shirts, prayer flags and other Chinesethemed items, $750 was raised to benefit a school in China. Convocation of Artists and Scholars Reinhardt’s best student minds and talents convene every spring for the University’s annual Convocation of Artists & Scholars, COAS. The 2013 COAS included music recitals, creative writing readings, a student research conference, a student-teacher portfolio exhibit, student art and science exhibits, internship presentations, an international culture festival, Spring Day, Honors Day and musical theatre performances. “The Convocation of Artists & Scholars is a celebration of the artistic and scholarly achievements of our students,” says Dr. Wayne Glowka, dean of arts and humanities. “We want to show what makes Reinhardt different as a university of smaller size - we have the ability to, in one large-scale event, showcase our high achieving students as models for emulation.” Make plans to join us for COAS 2014, now named for Reinhardt’s late Academic VP and Dean Robert L. New Graduate and Online Degree Completion Programs

The University’s added its first online degree completion programs with a Bachelor of Criminal Justice in August 2012 and a Bachelor of Healthcare Administration in January 2013. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools approved Reinhardt’s Master of Public Administration with a concentration in criminal justice in March of 2013, and MPA classes will start at Reinhardt’s North Fulton Center in August 2013. “These programs have all been developed with today’s students in mind,” said Marsha S. Local Students Supported by A DAY and Tour of Homes On April 27, 2013, Reinhardt University hosted its first Tour of Homes to benefit “A DAY for Reinhardt,” which provides grants for Cherokee County students at Reinhardt. Guests toured three elegant homes in Hawks Ridge, an exclusive golfing community in northeast Cherokee County. “The tour was a creative way to broaden the awareness of Reinhardt and its scholarship opportunities,” said Barbara Manous, director of annual giving and church relations. The tour and A DAY campaign raised $105,750 for qualified local Cherokee County students. — BLM

Ministerial Golf Outing Again a Success The annual Reinhardt United Methodist Golf Outing was held May 22, 2013, at Bent Tree Golf Community in Jasper, Ga. Seventy-seven players from 15 United Methodist churches, most in foursomes of ministers and church members, took part. Every dollar raised by this event goes directly to student scholarships, and the 2013 event raised more than $19,000. This effort supports Reinhardt’s Blanche Hagan Scholarships, which provide qualified United Methodist students with up to $2,000 per year and dependents of North and South Georgia United Methodist clergy with up to $12,000 per year. — BLM

The 25th Annual Golf Classic was played on May 13, 2013, at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Ga. Ninetytwo players took part, and William G. Pritchard and James F. Jernigan, Classic founders who continue to serve on the event committee, were recognized. The tournament raised almost $137,000 for scholarships for qualified students. PGA golfer Larry Mize served as guest host and shot a ball for every team. Sponsorships, tee sponsors and a silent auction also raised funds. In its 25-year history, the Golf Classic has raised more than $2.6 million for scholarships. — BLM

Say ‘Thank You’ by Establishing a Named Endowment Has someone enriched your life? Your parents, your spouse, a friend or an acquaintance? We all are indebted to certain individuals who have been a positive influence. Reinhardt has a meaningful and long-lasting way for you to say ‘thank you;’ you can establish a Reinhardt Named Scholarship Endowment and honor the person who made a difference for you. Your gift will also provide scholarship assistance to deserving Reinhardt students. The minimum amount needed to establish this type of endowment is $25,000. You can make a gift of at least that amount, or you can start an endowment with a smaller donation and contribute toward the fund over several years; in that instance Reinhardt simply ‘holds’ those gifts in a Restricted Fund until the total reaches $25,000. When the Endowment is completely funded, scholarships w ill be awarded according to criteria you – the donor – choose. The scholarships awarded each year will total 5% of the Endowment’s annual earnings, in accordance with University spending policies. Mozelle Bates Tarpley passed away on May 14, 2013. After graduating from North Georgia College, she taught for many years in Murray County and in Dalton City public schools. In 2001 she and her husband, Fred H. Tarpley ’40, established a trust with Reinhardt to name the Education Center. Mr. Tarpley preceded her in death.

Marian Brown Holmes, of Duluth, Ga., passed away on May 25, 2013, after a long journey with Alzheimer’s. She attended boarding school at Reinhardt Academy where she met her husband of 69 years, Eric Holmes, Jr. ’43. A graduate of Georgia State University, she worked for many years with the Georgia Department of Archives and History in the office of the Secretary of State as the editor of the Georgia Official and Statistical Register. She is survived by her husband, her son and his wife, Andrew and Rhonda McLean Holmes; her

daughter and her husband, Melissa Holmes and Stephen Vermillion, and five grandchildren.

Sean L. Callahan, a 2011 graduate of Reinhardt’s Police Academy, was killed in the line of duty on Dec. 18, 2012. A Clayton County police officer, he was shot 1while responding to a domestic call in Stockbridge, Ga. He underwent surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and died a day later. Callahan was awarded a posthumous associate of science in criminal justice during Reinhardt’s commencement ceremony on May 4, 2013. — KAB & MSW

Ten years later, they started dating again, and Keith proposed on campus. They were married Dec. 23, 2000, and now have two children, EmmaGrace and Keifer. Michelle and Keith have taught as adjunct professors in education at Reinhardt and both love their alma mater!

The Rev. Dr. Malone Dodson John Wesley Clergy Award

Dodson was recognized for his service to the United Methodist Church. He pastored Roswell First United Methodist Church from 1977-2001. He also served at Haygood Memorial, Atlanta; Tuckston, Athens, Ga.; Bethlehem-Nazareth Charge; Dalton First UMC; New Hope, Palmetto, Ga.; and West Point Circuit. Since retiring, he has served as president of Mentoring Ministries, Inc., from 2001 to present. He serves on the North Fulton Habitat for Humanity Steering Committee; North Fulton Homestretch; Alpharetta/Isakson YMCA Executive Committee; Foundation for Wesley Woods; and the North Fulton Child Development Association Board of Directors. Dodson has received numerous awards, including the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year; the Roswell Historical Society History Maker of the Year; and the LaGrange College Callaway Award for Lifetime Service. A native of Atlanta, Ga., Dodson and his wife, Charlotte, have been married since 1959. They have three children and six grandchildren.

Distinguished Alumni Award

Betty Ann is a native of Cherokee County and attended Reinhardt Academy and Junior College from 1936 until 1949. She finished the Piedmont Hospital nursing program and was the head nurse at then R.T. Jones Hospital (now NorthsideCherokee Hospital) until 1962. In her second career, horticulture, she owned Callahan’s Nursery. After years of successful plant sales, she switched her focus to real estate and restored two of Waleska’s oldest buildings on Highway 140. She also transformed her rolling pasture into Callahan’s Golf Links. Betty Ann and her late husband, Dean, were married from 1954 until his passing in 1992. She has twin sons, Stephen and David, son Matthew, and five grandchildren. For more on Betty Ann, see p. 28.

Marion Pinson Wilder ’50 John Wesley Laity Award

Wilder was raised in Athens, Ga., and is a life-long United Methodist. She attended then Reinhardt College along with Garnett Wilder, who would become her husband and a beloved United Methodist minister. She has served on many boards and agencies of the UMC. Her greatest passion has been working with people with developmental disabilities, serving as an advocate for 45 years. She taught in Georgia’s public schools in special education, supervised a service center in Floyd County and directed a multi-faceted program for persons with developmental disabilities under the Cobb and Douglas Boards of Health. Wilder recommended to the 1991 North Georgia Annual Conference the establishment of Aldersgate Homes, a residential ministry for persons with developmental disabilities. She has served on the Aldersgate Board since its inception and has guided the organization as president since 1996. In 2001, under her leadership, Collinswood, a retreat center for persons with developmental disabilities, was established on Lake Oconee. — LHT

10 Under 10 Dr. Telisha Carlos Cadena Dionne Bailey ’03 Gaitán ’05 Dr. Bailey earned a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Reinhardt. She then earned a master’s degree in history and a doctorate from the University of Mississippi. While at Ole’ Miss, she served on the Chancellors Commission on the Status of Women, was the Graduate Women’s Director for the Graduate Student Council, served two terms as the president of the Black Graduate Professional Student Association and received the Georgia Nix Miller Activism Award from the Sarah Isom Center. Dionne’s graduate and professional work centers on gender, race, feminism and the Southern penal system. Dionne plans to enter law school in the fall of 2014 to earn a degree in public interest law.

Originally from Colombia, South America, Carlos came to Reinhardt for his sophomore year on Georgia Rotary Student scholarship. He stayed at Reinhardt and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. In 2008, he received a Master of Public Administration from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. Carlos is currently a Ph.D. Research Fellow at the United Nations University – UNUMERIT/ School of Governance in Maastricht, The Netherlands. In his research, he examines the conditions that determine transport sustainability outcomes in Latin America. He has worked for a public relations office in Washington D.C, the International Cooperation Agency of Medellín. He is also one of the founders of La Ciudad Verde, a not-for-profit organization advocating for urban sustainability in Colombia.

Jillian Nichols ’04 “Lonnie” Lacy ’02 Jillian graduated with After earning a B.S. in Business Management, Daniel joined the Chickfil-A corporate staff as a grand opening supervisor on the West Coast. After leading logistics for 20 store openings across California, Utah, and Arizona, Daniel was given the opportunity to be a Chick-fil-A operator. During the last three years, Daniel has led his Scottsdale restaurant to great success. He was recognized by Chick-fil-A with the prestigious Rookie of the Year award. The following year he joined the Chick-fil-A Champions Club. Through all his success, Daniel said he has been most blessed by the family the Lord has given him: his wife, Morgan, and daughter, Olivia.

Lonnie was President of the Reinhardt Student Government Association before graduating in 2002. He is an ordained priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia. Since ordination in 2006, he served in Statesboro, Ga. as the chaplain for Georgia Southern University and as the assistant rector of Trinity Episcopal Church. After 3 years of serving in the ministry in Statesboro, Lonnie accepted a call to serve as rector of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Tifton, Ga. Lonnie was Reinhardt Baccalaureate speaker during the 2009 Commencement ceremonies. He is married to the former Jessica ‘Jay’ Whitmire, Reinhardt Class of 2003.

She has earned a gifted endorsement from North Georgia R.E.S.A, the Teach 21 technology endorsement and a Master in Early Education from Piedmont College. She was recently named the 2012-13 Teacher of the Year for Oak Grove Elementary School. Jillian is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction through North Central University. She sponsors a child through Compassion International, participates in various fund raising walks and is active in Delta Kappa Gamma projects. Through her church, she is a Bible and Sunday School teacher and has traveled on mission trips to St. Vincent in the Grenadines and Anchorage, Alaska.

10 Under 10 honors a group of 10 alumni who graduated within the last 10 years (2002 2012) and are successful in their professions. These alumni were recognized at the annual Talon Awards Gala in March 2013, and portraits and information about them hang in the Hasty Student Life Center. Each year a new group of 10 under 10 will be selected.

Charity Neese ’12 After graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance, Charity accepted a staff position with Reinhardt’s School of Music. In addition to accompanying student soloists, she also accompanies the Concert and Chamber choirs under the direction of Dr. Martha Shaw. She also directs the North Georgia Homeschool Band’s Teen Choir and Girls Vocal Ensemble, is a private piano instructor and is a pianist at Bethel Baptist Church in Woodstock, Ga. In 2012, she was the first faculty/staff member to be inducted into the Reinhardt chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon, the professional music fraternity. Believing that music is God’s special gift to her, Charity strives to use it to glorify her Giver and to be a blessing and inspiration to all who hear her play.

Nelson Karpeh ’05 Randell Trammell Captain Sean As a young child, ’03 MBA ’09 Woods ’10 Nelson lived with his family in Liberia. Civil war broke out, and he was separated from his parents for more than three years. It was during this time that Nelson realized that God had a plan for him. At age 11 he came to the U.S. on political asylum. He attended school in Marietta, and then Reinhardt where he received a Bachelor of Science in Sociology. He began working with State Farm Agent Steve Cannon, then joined the Fred Hinson State Farm team in 2006, and became a State Farm agent in 2010. Nelson is a member of the Alpharetta Rotary Club and the Liberia Association of Metro Atlanta, and he is on the vestry board for his church, St. Jude’s Church, Marietta. He is an advocate and sponsor for Compassion International and Water for Life, an organization that builds and restores wells in Liberia.

Trammell earned a B.S. in Religious Education and later completed an MBA at Reinhardt as a part of the first graduating class. Trammell is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis on Organizational Management and Leadership at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. In 2004, he joined the State YMCA staff as a district director. In 2009, he was named CEO, making YMCA history as one of the youngest serving state-wide CEOs. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Georgia YMCA Directors Alliance and received his YMCA Senior Director Certification in 2008. He serves on the Reinhardt University Alumni Board of Governors and is an adjunct professor at Reinhardt teaching nonprofit management. He and his wife, Catherine, live in McDonough, Ga.

As a child growing up in New York, Woods dreamed of becoming a police officer. In 1995, this dream became a reality. At first, very few of his peers had college degrees, but as years passed, Sean realized that earning a degree would be instrumental in furthering his career. He graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Public Safety Leadership and Management from Reinhardt. Sean has been in law enforcement for 18 years, 15 of these years have been with the city of Alpharetta where he was promoted to captain in July of 2011. He enjoys the excitement of law enforcement and says that every day is a different experience. Sean has been married for 13 years to his wife, Lori, and they have two children, Aidan and Katie. In his spare time he volunteers as a soccer coach for a local recreation league.

Whitney Carter Hearndon ’03 Whitney graduated with a Bachelor of Science in business administration. Soon after graduation, She married fellow alumnus, David Herndon ‘01 and began work as the marketing director for Albany Bank & Trust, Albany, Ga. She is now the marketing director at Turner & Associated Insurance. She and two friends founded Grace Graffiti, an online retailer of personalized and handcrafted gifts. Grace Graffiti has been featured by national web sites and continues to be one of the most successful shops on Etsy. com. She also stays active in her community by volunteering with her home church, Wesley UMC, and a local youth outreach, The Gathering Place. She also serves internationally in partnership with Scripture Union Peru and helped to raise $10,000 to replace the transportation system for the Kimo, Peru Orphanage. — LHT

Dr. John K. Derden had a book, The World’s Largest Prison: The Story of Camp Lawton, published by Mercer University Press in 2012. It is the first full-length, fully documented history of the Confederate military prison, Camp Lawton, near Millen, Ga. It was built in 1864 as a replacement for Camp Sumter (more commonly known as Andersonville), but was only operational for about six weeks, as it lay in the path of Sherman’s March to the Sea. In 2010, as a result of an archeological examination of the site, significant findings were announced. Although Georgia Southern University faculty and students led the dig, because of his long-standing interest and extensive research, Derden was named project historian. He has been nominated for recognition by the Georgia Writers Association as “Georgia Writer of the Year in History” as a result of the book. He is retired from East Georgia State College but continues to work there as a part-time instructor and administrator.

Brian Steel ‘04 IMPAIRED PERCEPTIONS

At first glance of the photo at left, you might see a person that’s not “normal,” but that is a perception that Brian Steel is trying to change. Shortly after he was born, Steel was diagnosed with congenital fiber-type disproportion. People with this condition experience muscle weakness and sometimes have breathing problems. Because he was told he was “handicapped” as a child and treated differently in school, Steel grew up feeling unfairly judged because of the way his body worked. Despite his hardships as a child, he was inspired by his differences, which led him to create “Impaired Perceptions,” a photography collection that features and tells the

stories of people with disabilities. “We filter everything that we see through the lens of our perceptions, so it is not until we are able to step outside of our perceptions that we are able to determine what is real and what is not,” he said. “The portraits are traditional, empowering and show each person’s humanity.” Previously featured on CNN’s web site, “Impaired Perceptions” will be showcased at Art Inspired in Atlanta this September. John C. Ihlenburg retired this spring. He joined the baseball coaching staff as an assistant in its inaugural season in 2004. In spring of 2011, he was promoted to head coach. Dr. Graham P. Johnson, assistant professor of English, presented his paper “Deciphering a Difficult Wellerism: Durham Proverbs No. 10” at the 47th International Congress on Medieval Studies. Dr. Curtis G. Lindquist, professor of religion and philosophy, received the 2013 Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award. The award, presented by Vulcan Materials Company, highlights faculty who make outstanding contributions to education, student learning and campus life. Dr. George Luckenberg, artist-in-residence, retired this spring after 18 years of service to Reinhardt and 60 years in higher education. He taught music appreciation, applied piano and harpsichord and presented two recitals a year. Lucktenberg was a nationally recognized authority on early keyboard performance and literature.

Dr. Thomas M. Reed, professor of special education, retired this spring. He came to Reinhardt in July 2007 as dean of the Price School of Education. Following that appointment, he served as the coordinator of online education. He also taught undergraduate and graduate education courses; advised education students; and supervised student teachers. Most recently, he focused on developing the Master of Education in Special Education. Dr. Eddie B. Robertson retired from Reinhardt with more than 26 years of service to the University. See p. 8.

Conference Character Awards Presented to Reinhardt Athlete, Cross Country Team The Champion of Character award is the most prestigious individual award presented by the Appalachian Athletic Conference, AAC. This year, Reinhardt baseball player Tyler Adams, was named the AAC Male Champion of Character. “We are extremely proud of Tyler, and we’re equally proud that he’s received this recognition from the presidents of the AAC member schools,” said Director of Athletics Bill Popp. “Tyler is a hard-working young man who is a tremendous representative of, not just our baseball program, but the entire university and the AAC.” Tyler calls the award a huge honor. “This is a testament to the character that I have, but also to the character that was instilled in me growing up, through my high school years and continuing into my college years,” said Adams. “I think this is a lot about being involved in the community and giving back to others. A lot of us don’t realize how much we have.” The Canton, Ga., native is a junior who is double majoring in sports studies and business. An AAC Academic All-Conference honoree, he has been on the University Dean’s List numerous times. On the diamond, Adams hit a team-leading .382 with 11 doubles and an on-base percentage of .463. Adams said one of his biggest eye-openers came on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. “It helped me to realize what those kids don’t have and what we have in

While the NAIA is perhaps not as famous as the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), the core values of the NAIA best fit the values of Reinhardt University. The NAIA Champions of Character program promotes five core values: Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship and Servant Leadership. “I’ve been teaching many of these values in different ways for almost 20 years,” said Reinhardt football coach Danny Cronic. “I think integrity is knowing and doing what’s right, even when no one is watching. Lady Eagles Softball Win 4th AAC Championship; Compete in Nationals

The Reinhardt Lady Eagles basketball team won their first Appalachian Athletic Conference, AAC, Tournament and earned a berth to the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. “I’m a firm believer in defense,” said RU head coach Lindsey Huffman. “We’ve worked on it all season long. I do believe that defense wins championships. It isn’t always fun, but our team bought in and saw the benefits of buckling down and playing hard on that side of the ball.” The Lady Eagles finished the regular season tied for fourth, but entered the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed. After a pair of dominating wins over Bryan College and AAC Regular Season Champion Milligan College, the Lady Eagles fought No. 3 Union College down to the wire. After taking the lead midway through the second half, RU never looked back in winning the AAC title, 59-52. Junior Taylor Johnson scored 21 points while Tournament MVP Tara Hay scored 13. Though Huffman, along with assistant coach James Black, were the guiding forces behind RU’s AAC tournament success, the players’ commitment led to the team’s success. Even though Hay was named tournament MVP after averaging 16.7 points a game, she felt the team deserved the honor. “I’m really not all that concerned with being [tournament MVP] at all,” Hay said. “The way this team came together over those three days was amazing. Everyone... just fought tooth-andnail to give everything they had. Being named MVP is great, but that honor really goes to the team.” The Lady Eagles finished the season 19-15, but that record doesn’t include a stunning 65-60 victory over Jacksonville State, their first ever against a NCAA Division I opponent.

After winning an AAC championship for the fourth consecutive season, Reinhardt’s softball team closed out its best season ever with a trip to the NCAA National Championship in Columbus, Ga. The Lady Eagles earned a No. 8 seed nationally and went to Jackson, Miss., to take part in the Belhaven Bracket as part of the NAIA Opening Round. After making its way to the final day of the bracket, Reinhardt won the tournament and the bid into the National Championship with a thrilling, 2-1, win over host Belhaven University. In their first tournament game, the Lady Eagles battled to a 3-0, win over St. Xavier (Ill.) to face the top seed in the tournament, Concordia (Calif.). After falling behind 6-0, the Lady Eagles thrilled the crowd with a six-run fifth inning to tie the score. Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles, Concordia would score the winning run one inning later to earn a 7-6 victory. Facing elimination, the Lady Eagles battled Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) in a tight contest. The game would go into extra innings, with senior Kelsey Floyd chopping a single back up the middle to score freshman Alexis Chumbler with the game-winning run in a 2-1 eight inning victory. RU’s run to a national championship would come up short the next day as the Lady Eagles fell to Williams Baptist (Ark.). Senior shortstop Lindsay Booker would earn All-Championship Team honors after leading the Lady Eagles in batting in the tournament. The Lady Eagles would wrap up the season ranked No. 6 nationally. — JAH

Athletes Bring In Awards Four student-athletes earned National Fast-Pitch Coaches Association All-Region honors, with Maddie Monroe named FirstTeam All-Region after going 28-3 for the year. Also receiving All-Region honors were Second-Team members Alexis Chumbler, Kaley Garmon and Shelby Sinclair. RU softball head coach Glen Crawford (left) was named AAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in six seasons. Reinhardt had 13 student-athletes named to AAC First-Teams, seven to the Second-Teams and one to the Third-Team. Other AAC awards included the Gold Glove Outfielder award to Dusty Davis, the Pitcher of the Year award (the fourth in her career) to Monroe and Gold Glove Outfielder honors for Chumbler. Because lacrosse is not yet an NAIAsanctioned sport, RU’s women’s team plays in the AAC of the National Women’s Lacrosse League. Two Lady Eagles were named to the AAC All-Conference Team, while five made the Honorable Mention Seven Eagles or Lady Eagles were named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes, for having a GPA of at least 3.50 and being in at least their junior year. Thirty-four players were named to the AAC All-Academic Teams. These student-athletes must be at least a sophomore and have a gpa of 3.25 or higher. I look forward to a very bright future for Reinhardt Athletics.” – William “Bill” Popp Reinhardt Director of Athletics Bill Popp received a prestigious honor when the other athletic directors in the Appalachian Athletic Conference named him 2012-13 AAC Athletic Director of the Year. “A coach is only as good as their players, and an athletic director is only as good as their staff and coaches,” said Popp. “I am humbled to receive this honor from my peers in the AAC. I am even more humbled by the opportunity to serve and the support I receive from RU President Dr. Thomas Isherwood and Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Roger Lee. Popp has been the school’s athletic director for eight seasons. Initially he also served as Reinhardt’s head baseball coach, but two years ago he transitioned into a full-time athletic director position. During his time at Reinhardt, the number of sports offerings has doubled and many of the facilities used by the Eagles and Lady Eagles have been renovated or enhanced. In the fall of 2012, a brand new turf field and adjacent field house opened which serves as the home for many of Reinhardt’s outdoor intercollegiate sports. miss the ‘Golden Rule’ by very much, but the NAIA phrases it a little different because they say to, ‘Treat others the way you want to be treated.’ RU Athletics promotes each of these values in various of ways, including monthly Coaches Breakfast which bring together RU coaches and student-athletes for breakfast at the Gordy Center. Different coaches spoke about what character meant to them. Gillespie spoke about responsibility. “Your responsibility is to God, your team, your family and yourself. As a coach and as a former player who thinks about sports daily, I want you to realize that accepting individual responsibility in your own life leads to a lot of success down the road.” Cronic spoke about two other values. “Sportsmanship is about competing hard and being determined to win, but it involves respecting your opponent. Servant Leadership is very important. It is about letting selfishness go and letting servant leadership take over. When you have a 36

football team, or any team, that touches on these aspects just for a moment and focuses on the team - that’s a very special moment.” As part of the Champions of Character program, every Reinhardt team performed community service. Whether it was the women’s soccer team hosting a clinic for local children or football players volunteering at elementary school carnivals and fairs, Eagles and Lady Eagles could be found throughout the campus and the community helping others. “Of course we strive to win championships on the field,” Popp said, “but we strive to be champions off the field just as much, if not more so. I would much rather coach a team of players that didn’t win a championship but was respected for all of the great works they have done away from the field than to coach a team that won a championship but wasn’t respected on and off the field.”–JAH

Reinhardt University’s Athletic Department will have a pair of new head coaches on the sidelines when teams begin play in the 2013-14 season. Kevin Howard became the new head coach of the baseball program June 19. Arriving on campus with a resume featurHoward ing 20 years as a head collegiate baseball coach, Howard knows what it takes to develop a winning pedigree. “I’m humbled by the opportunity to coach at such a great school,” Howard said. “Reinhardt is a wonderful institution that has a great infrastructure for success. I look forward to being part of the RU family for many years to come.” Howard was previously the head baseball coach at LaGrange College for 14 seasons. Prior to that, be was the head coach at Emory University for six years. He has won over 500 games as a head coach and has led squads to the NCAA Division III national tournament on four occasions. The other new Hatton head coach is Christine Hatton, who takes over at the helm of RU’s women’s lacrosse program. Hatton is a native of Conyers, Ga., who played her high school lacrosse at Rockdale County High School. After a three-year career at Tennessee Wesleyan College, Hatton became the head coach at Midland (Neb.) College in the first year the program competed at the varsity level. “I was offered several different jobs, but I chose Reinhardt because I really like the campus here," Hatton said. “I wanted to continue coaching at the collegiate level, but this is close to home for me.” — JAH
