Whaingaroa Harbour Care. Waikato District Council service delivery manager Tim Harty says the length of the original breakwater was 54m, not including the detached end, which based on survey information was 3m-3.5m. “The design of new breakwater is 54m.” He says the top of the boulders, although not uniform in cross section, are at the same level as the concrete cover of the previous structure. “The original breakwater was also not high enough or long enough for boat launching when the tide was too high and waves were significant. “However the new breakwater is intended to slightly improve the conditions through a better alignment and flatter side slopes … the less steep side slopes will reduce wave reflection, lowering the overall energy on the boat ramp. The flatter side slopes and the wider crest can give the illusion of it being shorter due to the relative proportions.” Mr Harty says Waikato Regional Council conditions states you can’t increase the footprint of what is occupied in the coastal marine area. “The iwi and surfers would have preferred the breakwater wasn’t there at all or at least smaller … (while) boat ramp users wanted the new breakwater longer and higher, or at least the same size as the old breakwater. “WRC’s primary objective was to minimise damage to the foreshore/ nearshore environment, primarily through the limitation of the footprint size.” Raglan Coastguard president Wally Hawken says coastguard was recently involved in an incident at the Manu Bay boat ramp. “There was one or two vessels … one went in and we brought one back in over the bar that wasn’t happy to go in there.” He says if regular boaties were having an issue with the new break wall at the popular launching ramp then that should be looked at. http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla “Anything we can do to promote the boaties there would have to be a plus.” Inger Vos

Sewage spill puts dampner on Easter weekend

The site of the new sewage tanks on Marine Parade where the spill occurred over Easter weekend.

T

he sewage spill into the harbour estuary near Marine Parade over the Easter weekend cost businesses lost revenue and the town its reputation, says a representative of Raglan Chamber of Commerce. Untreated wastewater – 10 cubic metres, according to the Waikato District Council – entered the Raglan harbour around 8pm on Easter Friday, after the main inlet pipe to the Marine Parade pump station collapsed. A temporary solution to pump wastewater was put in place, with contractors working overnight. The council put up signs advising people not to swim or collect shellfish, pertaining to the entire harbour, and the ban was still in place this week. Karioi Lodge owner Charlie Young, who also owns harbour cruise boat the Wahine Moe and is a member of the Raglan Chamber of Commerce, says the sewage spill meant a loss of business to the Raglan community, “no doubt about it”. “Heaps of people come to Raglan just to get out on the water. “Speaking to a few people out and about on the weekend, there was quite a lot of disappointment from those who came into Raglan because they couldn’t do stuff. “I know for a fact that people pulled out early because they couldn’t use the harbour. “There was a big exit on Sunday, and even on Saturday. “It was really quiet on one of the days. It wasn’t as robust as you usually would see it.” Mr Young says he thinks the spill is bad for Raglan’s brand. “Raglan prides itself on being environmentally-minded … and to have that come and slam it in the face, it was a shocker, really. It undoes a lot of hard work that people do.” Mr Young says cancellations of events at the Raglan wharf on Saturday, because of the sewage spill, indirectly affected business on the Wahine Moe. “More people would have booked on that night.” Raglan Fish owner Mark Mathers cancelled the PlaceMakers Fishing

Contest for children, which was part of the Raglan Seafood Fiesta at the wharf on Saturday. The fiesta included smoked fish demonstrations, face painting, live music and an evening cruise. Mr Mathers says the sewage spill would have affected thousands of dollars in turnover for marine-based businesses, and that their drop in customers would have had a flow-on effect in town. He says the spill cost him in advertising, sponsorship, free ice creams and drinks for the kids, live music at the wharf, and a lot of time and effort that went into planning the event. “PlaceMakers put in a cash contribution. How do we get that back? How do we get sponsors next year?” The sewage spill made for a flat day at the wharf, he says. “Even the shop wasn’t good. There was a flow-on through town.” Mr Mathers says council should be liable for costs and loss of income. “The council talks it down, too, says it wasn’t much.” But 10 cubic metres is a substantial amount of wastewater, he says. “I hear comments from people (who were) a long way away from it, that they could smell it. “They (WDC) will get a fine but there is no winning, ratepayers have to pay for it.” It’s not the first time wastewater has spilled into the harbour in Raglan, and there have been many calls for the council to improve its sewerage system to accommodate the growing tourist town. The site of the latest spill is just metres from where council contractors are putting in two new overflow wastewater storage tanks on the corner of Nihinihi Ave and Marine Parade. In August 2014, untreated sewage flowed into the Raglan harbour from a pump station manhole in Wainui Rd – just a month after the council was fined $56,250 for a 2013 discharge, which also contaminated the harbour near the Kopua Domain. Mr Young agrees that there has to be some level of responsibility. “If it was a one-off thing, sure, but you start looking at the series of events. “I tip my hat off to the workers,

though. Without them we would have had a complete write-off. They all worked their arses off overnight.” The council is also copping criticism for its handling of the spill. Raglan Paddleboarding owners Keith Jarmey and Justine Quarrell, who had heaps of no-shows in their fully-booked weekend schedule, say the worst thing is that they found out about the sewage spill from a national paper. Ms Quarrell says if people hadn’t read the information in a newspaper or online then there was no way they would have known. “It’s disgusting. “There were people in the water and noone was telling them to get out. “They didn’t seem to control it very well.” The couple still operated on the harbour during the weekend but well away from the inlet near Marine Parade. Raglan Kayak owners Steve and Candide Reid, who also had many cancellations because of the sewage spill, say they were given absolutely no information that it had happened, and WDC councillor Clint Baddeley also criticised the lack of signs warning of the health risk. Mr Baddeley says there was one sign by the boat ramp and another by the footbridge but they weren’t big enough, and council has to do better than that. “The message came through other channels,” he says. He says the sewage leak was totally disappointing. “It’s embarrassing but what can you do? “The contractors are putting in a main storage unit to avoid such situations, but doing the earthworks created a situation where the pipe that feeds into the system collapsed.” He says the length of time and extent of the swimming ban was to err on the side of caution, even though most of the waste was confined to the estuary and would have gone out with the next high tide. He says the council expects water tests will have cleared the Raglan harbour as safe for swimming by the time this paper goes to print. “Usually it’s three days (for a ban) but in this situation it is five,” he says, with the hold-up due to the long weekend and getting water samples to the lab. Mr Baddeley says he did not think the sewage spill affected business in the town during Easter. Waikato District Council service delivery general manager Tim Harty says it is hoped that the warning signs against swimming and collecting shellfish will be lifted by this weekend. He says the exact cause of the failure has not yet been established but a report will be made available once it has been completed. Mr Harty says the site at the Nihinihi Ave-Marine Parade intersection, where work is currently taking place, transfers all the wastewater collected in Raglan to the treatment plant, and has been known to omit an odour. He says council has also installed new wastewater storage in Nero St, and there are various asset renewals regarding Raglan’s sewerage-wastewater system planned for in the Long Term Plan adopted in 2015. Meijden on her toes in the six weeks since she arrived in New Zealand from the Netherlands – so busy in fact there’s now a collection of her work on show at the new outlet shop in Volcom Lane. From handbags and clutch bags to a stylish backpack-cum-shoulderbag, all Liesbeth’s creations are made of vegetabletanned leather, a product which business co-owner Marie de Jong points out is “the

best leather in the world” and used by big Italian luxury brands like Gucci. Marie and partner Rob Galloway import it from Italy three or four times a year to make their own shoes and accessories. Now Liesbeth, their young apprentice, is designing and crafting her unique bags from the product, which uses tannins found in vegetable matter such as tree bark, wood, leaves, fruits and roots. It’s more durable than other tanned leathers, says the 19-year-old student, and gets better with age. “I like to do everything from beginning to end,” she adds of the bag-making process she works through five days a week in the mezzanine workspace above the shop,

which occupies a high-profile corner of the new wharf building. Liesbeth’s on a six-month internship at Soul Shoes and loves living in Raglan. As a third year student on a four-year shoe and bag-making course at Sint Lucas design school in Brabant, she is the only one from her class who opted for work experience in another country after having found Soul Shoes on the internet. “So she’s adventurous, our Liesbeth,” says Marie fondly of their visitor from Europe. She says Liesbeth fits in so well with her and Rob’s lifestyle at their silo apartment and workshop on the wharf that “we don’t want her to go home”. Liesbeth’s revelling in the change of lifestyle, going sailing with the couple on their yacht in Auckland and learning to surf with them in Raglan. She says there’s always something happening here, unlike in her small inland hometown in the Netherlands. “And it’s really relaxed … Holland’s very stressed.” Marie adds Liesbeth has volunteered for the Coastguard since arriving in town, has been out to sea regularly and now has her own pager. She also goes out on the Coastguard jetskis every Wednesday. She’s felt no pangs of homesickness yet, Liesbeth tells the Chronicle in very good conversational English. She reverts to speaking in Dutch only when skyping friends and family back home, showing them her silo apartment living quarters and the healthy meals she now enjoys despite a reputation for being “picky”. Her parents arrive in New Zealand in May for a two-week visit, and will then go tiki-touring with their daughter. Having Liesbeth working alongside Marie and Rob as an intern at Soul Shoes means their business has recently been accredited in Holland as an educational provider. The couple are now looking forward to having another girl, from Amsterdam, come and stay for a twomonth stint of shoemaking. Marie says Liesbeth has been “fantastic”, a bonus to the business started in Raglan by Rob way back in the 70s. Rob and Liesbeth “bounce ideas off each other”, and yet Liesbeth is free to do her own thing too. Her trademark one-off bags are both functional and aesthetically appealing, and her collection of a dozen or so range in price from $150 to $400. “We’ve had to confiscate her passport,” Rob jokes of his talented protégé who while at school won a competition to make a money bag for a bank and who has since – with two other students at Brabant – designed shoes for the Dutch queen. Library invests in new educational tool for community Be one of the first to use the new tablets at Raglan Library. Jam-packed with educational and learning apps, the new self-led learning devices are a new library service by Waikato District Council. The tablets, which will be available from April 4, have been loaded with selected apps including TED talks, Khan Academy and the New Zealand Herald. “Our libraries play an important part in education and learning,” says Sue Duignan, customer support general manager.

“We realise that new technology can be daunting and there may be some people who have never used a tablet before so we’ll be holding a number of drop-in sessions.” The drop-in sessions will be held from 10.30am-11.30am and 5.30pm-6.30pm on Wednesday, April 6, and Wednesday, April 13. “A staff member will be available at these sessions to show you how to use the tablets and to answer any questions you may have. We’d also love to hear your feedback on the educational apps we have on offer.”

The new tablets are in addition to the computers already available in the Raglan Library. The wider internet, such as email, search engines, social media and gaming sites, will not be accessible on the tablets. Tablet users are asked to keep an eye on the time so that others waiting can have a go, and to bring their own ear phones, as they are not provided. Users need to be nine years or older. The council recently introduced the tablets at Te Kauwhata Library and is hoping to introduce tablets into the other Waikato District Libraries later this year.

Book launch also a taste of fruits of labour

It is both the love of the water and the love of the surf that has caused people to stand up and fight for it. Surfers locally, nationally and internationally voluntarily take on projects of all sizes, dedicating endless hours and energy to protect the oceans worldwide. F whip up some of her tasty treats for ood blogger Emma Galloway will

the launch of her new cookbook, A Year In My Real Food Kitchen, in Raglan on April 6.

Having recently lived in Perth for five years, Emma says it’s nice to be home for the launch of her new book, to be held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. A Year In my Real Food Kitchen comes after the “humbling success” of her first cookbook, My Darling Lemon Thyme, which was released two years ago when Emma was in Australia. “I knew I had to write another and it only made sense to this time write a seasonal cookbook, as this is how I've always cooked,” says Emma. The cookbook, which starts with autumn, contains 100 gluten-free, vegetarian recipes that celebrate the bounty of each season, with loads of tips for dealing with gluts of produce. There are savoury and sweet recipes for every season, all made with nourishing whole food ingredients. “My food is simple but packed with flavour,” says Emma, who started her My Darling Lemon Thyme blog six years ago as a place to share gluten-free, vegetarian real food recipes, stories and tips on organic gardening. “I will cook a few things from the cookbook for the launch.” There will also be wine provided by sponsor Waipara Hills. Emma says she had to write the cookbook in six months after its publication date was fasttracked, and her brain feels “a little bit depleted”. “That was quite hard because it is a seasonal cookbook. I guess the good thing about writing in Perth is the growing season is a lot longer than here. “I miss the produce in Australia because we had two big mango trees in our backyard, but the upside is we now have feijoas, because feijoas don’t grow in Perth.” It’s going to be a busy year for Emma, who still hasn’t finished unpacking at her family’s Cross St home and has been writing for Taste

magazine and Australian foodie website Delicious. The book launch has been snuck in before the Food Show in Christchurch, on April 8-10, at which Emma will be holding three cooking demonstrations. She is also cooking at the Food Shows in Wellington and Auckland in May and July. “It’s a really good gig to get in New Zealand,” Emma says of the Food Shows. “I am not that well known in New Zealand – a huge chunk of my blog and Instagram followers are from the US, then Australia, and then New Zealand.” She admits to some nerves, having never done live cooking demonstrations before. “It will be fine, it will be fine,” she tells herself. “Lots of people growl me but I don’t feel like I’m a very confident public speaker, but I will pull it off.” Emma has also been named as one of 30 nominees in the Cinnamon Travel Blogger Awards being held in Sri Lanka in June. She is one of three finalists for Best Food Blog, and is being hosted by the Cinnamon Hotel chain in Sri Lanka for five nights. Emma, who loves loves spicy food and cant wait to eat all the Sri Lankan food, says she is required to write a certain amount of blog posts and put photos on Instagram, using certain hastags, during her stay. That will be absolutely no problem, she says. “I only have to do two Instagram posts a day: I could easily probably do four or five.” It’s an all expenses trip away, so she doesn’t expect the prize to be huge. Two years ago, she won a blogging award for best original recipes through gourmet food and wine magazine Saveur. “They flew me to Las Vegas for the awards where I got a frying pan,” she laughs. “But the trip itself was awesome.” Also on the agenda this year is the possibility of running some cooking classes in Raglan. “After July, after the Food Show I would love to run some cooking classes in Raglan, but I am not sure how I would do it, yet.” Inger Vos

I recently sat down with another one of our own protectors, Phil McCabe, Chair of KASM, Kiwi’s Against Seabed Mining and Head Chief of Solscape Eco Retreat. Phil moved to Raglan at the beginning of the 90s. Looking for serenity away from Auckland, he settled into a house in the bush. It wasn’t until after he moved in that he discovered his neighbourhood also came with 6-foot peeling lefts, known as Indicators. He and his partner and fellow surfer, Bernadette Gavin took over Solscape over thirteen years ago, putting in consistent work to make it an educational eco retreat. Providing accommodation, surf lessons, permaculture classes and a flourishing workshop retreat space. To those that know him, it might seem as if Phil has been an environmental activist all his life, but it wasn’t until 2010 that he really began to dedicate himself to protecting both the water and the land. One of the names brought up during our conversation was Whaingaroa’s own heroin, Māori land and culture activist, Eva Rickard. Although he wasn’t around during Eva’s movements, he has taken the time to read about what she did for the people of Whaingaroa and those beyond the divvy. “Because she stood up, because of her example, that was it for me,” Phil said. This is not the first time her name has been brought up since talking about the surf. In my talks with Malibu Hamilton, I found out that Eva wanted to have a marine science office based at the Kokiri Centre. By default, a few years later, eCoast and ASR came into the community. Bringing a new breed of people, another level of consciousness. “Eva, that feels like the beginning,” Phil stated. And then there are things like Xtreme Zero Waste, Harbour Care, Kai Whenua. Places and people that have built themselves up together, through

a permaculture mindset. Looking after what’s here. Looking after what is in good health, and regenerating what is not in good health,” said Phil. Through Phil’s work with KASM, he has encountered governmental policies and corporations that are pushing hard to do things within the ocean that could be detrimental to its health. “The people who are pushing those policies don’t actually have a connection to it. When we’ve gone to these hearings, we express our connection to the ocean, and the importance it has to us. It’s our responsibility. If we don’t tell them, they don’t know that it exists.” The two biggest threats to our coastline at the moment: Half a million kilometers of ocean was released for oil exploration last Monday. Allowing international companies to come in and cherry pick the pieces they think look good, to see if they are of any value. Exploration results in things such as seismic surveying. But just because they are surveying doesn’t guarantee that they will drill there. A big part of that is here off of the west coast. The second major threat, seabed mining. TTR, Trans-Tasman Resources is in the process of preparing to relaunch the same application that they put in in 2013, which KASM played a big role in stopping. It would potentially be the first of it’s kind in the world [the mining of seabed iron ore]. Although the application is for South Taranaki, it is our coastline. If it were to get the green light, there could be more applications to come for exploration and exploitation of resources up the coastline. So how do everyday citizens get involved? Being informed, using your voice. The Internet is a viable source for information, and there are lots of environmental activist eager to engage with members of the community. What is your ‘awe’ inspiring moment when it comes to the water? That moment that makes your heart skip a beat, whether it’s a peeling left or watching the moonrise from the shore. Those are the moments that drive Phil and others alike to work tirelessly to ensure our waves are here for years to come. Find yours, and let it drive you to make a difference. Karamea Puriri

Raglan sees return of social cricket with tournament

This group met to discuss the possibility of re-establishing the Raglan Cricket that had ceased some time ago, as a result of this meeting it was decided to run a Six A Side tournament on the 9th of April to be played at the Raglan Sports Grounds by way of a festival day launch. This event is seen as a precursor to reestablishing the Raglan Cricket Club. It has been clear through the programmes that

Hamilton Cricket have run in the area that there is a greatly increased interest in the game in Raglan and its surrounds. Local teacher/musician and cricket enthusiast Daniel O’Neill initiated discussions with Sport Waikato’s Cricket Officer Cliff Dickeson and Melville Cricket Clubs Russell Wilson and as a result of these discussions the Six A Side re launch was decided upon as a way of capturing as many interested parties as possible. Dependent on the interest it is hoped to run a local business house competition and a junior club to play locally starting in term 4 2016. We would encourage anyone with an interest in the game and just not playing, to contact Cliff Dickeson in the first instance at Northern Districts Cricket or cliff@ndca. co.nz

Locals bringing new flavour to Waikato Show

Homegrown Harvest organiser Tash McGowan. Photo credit: Tracie Heasman

Food lovers will be pleased with the new ‘Homegrown Harvest’ food section at the Waikato Show thanks to Raglan local Tash McGowan of Salt Projects and Consulting. She recognised there was something missing at the Waikato show, which attracts some 15,000 visitors annually. “Our regional local food producers were not represented, and there is no regional and local fresh food to enjoy and buy. We’ve got a wealth of great food producers in our region. This needs to change”. She created the concept and put it to The Waikato Show organisers, who were soon on board. “Homegrown Harvest originally started as

a conversation I had with a few friends sharing our interest in producing food for our table, and enjoying fresh produce and food from local producers,” says Tash. Helping launch a community garden, and putting on summer 'harvest meals' for their friends she say,”We just plain enjoyed eating fresh flavoursome food that had local origins, and wanted to encourage others to do the same.” Fast forward a couple of years and the conversation is now a fully realized idea. The new section of the show, celebrating food produced locally and at home includes a pop up kitchen space, featuring a debut by local health coach and homeopath Irma Schutte who will inspire you to detox your kitchen in five easy ways, jam session with NZ Gardener Magazine editor Lynda Hallinan, gardening tips by a permaculture specialist, international cuisine food demonstrations and the’ prepare a plate’ session on Sunday with ex Raglan local Aaron Brunet. For this guests are invited to bring a fruit or vegetable item from their garden and Aaron will suggest some recipes for them, then they’ll have the chance to prepare a plate with him. Another initiative of Homegrown Harvest is the Waikato Vegetable Fruit & Food Competition, where the public are invited to enter a Jam, Chutney & Preserve Section, an Apple Pie Bake or a Garden Bounty Basket Section. To enter the Waikato Vegetable Fruit & Food Competition call Tash on 027 433 5599, or email marketing@waikatoshow. co.nz The Jam, Chutney & Preserve Section is proving very popular with entries received so far. And, of course, there is a fantastic fresh food market as part of Homegrown Harvest which will feature Raglan locals Raglan Coconut Yoghurt, True Food, Dizzy Blocks and Raglan Fish among other exhibitors. The Waikato Show runs from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th April 2016 at Claudelands Events Centre, 10am to 5pm. For kitchen session times and more information go to www.waikatoshow.co.nz/homegrownharvest

www.traciehphotography.co.nz Tastespotting a series of interviews with local Foodies (people who have an enthusiastic interest in the preparation and consumption of good food)

This week the Chronicle caught up with Irma Schutte, local health coach and avid foodie. How did you become interested in food and cooking? I don’t ever recall a time that I wasn't interested in food and cooking! I remember being 8 or 9 and cooking up a lil storm in the kitchen. I loved to give my mum ‘time off’ and make a healthy spread for the family on a Saturday afternoon. It was a bit like theatre to me. I loved setting the table, decorate it with flowers and make my kiddie dishes look pretty. Bit of a princess! Who are you inspired by ? A foodie relative, a famous chef, a blogger? Definitely my Mum. She was amazing in the kitchen. Nature inspired her. As a little girl I remember picking fresh produce with her in her vegetable garden (which was amazing), taking it to the kitchen and creating something yum and lovely. What’s your attitude towards food. Do you have a certain eating philosophy i.e. Vegan, Paleo or sugar free. My attitude towards food? Keep it real, keep it kind, keep it conscious. I’ve never been a fan of any diet. I don’t think there’s any ‘one size fits all’ way of eating. With age, I’ve become more intuitive with my daily food intake. My body’s needs keep changing: Some days I’m an accidental vegan, other days my body asks for meat. Most days I feel good without wheat, dairy and refined sugar. That works for me! Do you follow recipes or do you wing it most of the time? I’m a winger! The veggies and herbs growing in my garden, my pantry and my mood decides what’s getting in my belly! Do you have many failures in the kitchen? Mmm…failures no, but sometimes my creativity gets a bit carried away and I end up with dishes that are a bit too busy. Less is more! Do you eat out often. If you do what do you usually go for? I don’t eat out that much to be honest. I get too much of a kick out of entertaining for guests in my own home. When I eat out I like to spoil myself and head to some of my fav chefs’ restaurants. I have so much respect for their art. What is your kitchen tool you could not live without? My tastebuds and sense of smell! What ingredients would you bring on a deserted island with you - can only choose three. Garlic, lemons and sea salt. If you had to go on Masterchef who would you partner up with?

Jamie Oliver! Would that be cheating? I think so. What’s your go to meal when the cupboards are not well stocked? The something out of nothing meal. Something with brown rice; usually with vegetables and fresh herbs. What do you usually take to a pot luck? An Irma salad. What do you most enjoy cooking for friends and family? At the moment it’s fresh fish with a HUGE herbed garden salad and tatties roasted to a perfect crunch in virgin coconut oil. Can you share a simple recipe with our readers I’ve started making a sweet and tangy “mayo” substitute/dressing/dip to go with meals. In a food processor I blend together: • 2 TBS almond butter • Juice of one lemon • 1 TBS apple cider vinegar • 4 dates • 1 clove of garlic • Pinch of sea salt • Black pepper • Dash of water You’ve just launched your health coach business. Tell us more about that? Yes, it’s happening! Just like an athlete relies on a coach to help them train and do better in their sport, a health coach helps to facilitate, inspire and guide an individual to a more vibrant and fulfilled life. I have a few programs to choose from, depending on the individual’s needs. Wholesome food features quite a bit in the work that I do! It’s so much fun to see clients realise their magnificence and tap into a higher state of being. How can people get hold of you? Via email Irma.schutte@gmail. com, my website irmaschutte.com or by phone 0278902040.

he dairy co-op on Wallis Street is one of the oldest buildings in Raglan, and has a history all its own. Adding to the next chapter of the buildings story is The Raglan Yoga Loft, set to open on 8th of April. Yoga has been taught on and off in the loft for around eight years, but the building owners offered an official lease of the studio to the The Raglan Yoga Collective around this time last year. Co-collaborators of The Raglan Yoga Collective, Anna March and Shannon Darbyshire have had a joint vision of opening a studio together for many years and jumped at the opportunity. Their vision for the The Raglan Yoga Loft is to create a warm and welcoming place that is available to all members of the community. A place that is open to all modalities, offering Beginners Yoga, Hatha, Gentle, Pilates, Nia Dance and more. The Raglan Yoga Loft will add a new energy to the ever-growing yoga movement happening in Whaingaroa. One of the goals is to work alongside the other studios and teachers such as Solscape, The Space and Corry to put Raglan on the world yoga map. The Raglan Yoga Loft will provide another haven for those who are currently instructing out of halls, garages and their own homes. “We’re looking forward to sharing our knowledge and working together,” Shannon said.

The Herbal Dispensary’s Research Finds T his week I’ve collected some interesting research from around the world to share. Probiotics dampen down infant food allergies. Supplementation with a probiotic which contains lactobacillus rhamnosus may help with reducing allergies to cows milk in infants. Researches from the University of Chicago found that adding lactobacillus rhamnosus to infant formula increases the tolerance to milk proteins at higher rates than those treated with a nonprobiotic formula.

The Young Ones A series of Q & A’s with the youth in our community

This week the Chronicle caught up with budding photographer Frankie Reynolds who is currently enrolled at Raglan Area School. What school do you go to? Or what is your job? I go to Raglan Area School, and work as a kitchen hand at Orca. What do you like to do? I like to take black and white photos and develop them in my dark room. Who do you look up to? I don’t really look up to anyone specific, but I look up to a lot of socially influential artists like Richard Mosse, Banksy, Stefan Sagmeister and Juergen Teller What’s the benefit of living in Raglan? A benefit of living in Raglan is being surrounded by so many different personalities that stand out due to our tiny population, its also great that we have so many travellers visiting cause it gives me a realistic view on travelling will really be like when I leave school. How could Raglan be improved for it’s youth? I think Raglans pretty great as it is, but I know an improved bus system would benefit heaps of people my age as we like to go into Hamilton a lot and if you don’t have a license or a car the limited busses makes it pretty hard to meet up with friends. Best thing about social media? The best thing about social media is that it makes it so easy to stay in contact with friends and family all over the world. Worst thing about social media? The worst thing about social media is the way its built up a massive obsession with popularity for people my age, I think there’s way more important things to worry about than how many likes you get. Who should run the country?

The Dalai Lama What is the biggest issue facing the world right now? The biggest issue facing the world right now is war, because wars are a major cause of all the other issues in the worls right now; racism, pollution and poverty. War is also a big distraction for our governments who should be concentrating on fixing real issues. The country you would most like to visit I have a huge list of countries id like to visit, but Nepal is probably at the top. I’d like to witness the contrast between the amazing mountain landscapes and the poverty stricken cities. If you were stuck in an elevator for 24 hours with one person – who would you like that person to be? I’d like to spend some time with Richard Mosse, he’s a photographer that shoots most of his work on film. I’d like to hear what he has to say about shooting in such intense scenes, most of his work is based around war in Africa. Best book you’ve ever read? I don’t really read books, I read a lot of magazines, like IdN Magazine. Best movie you’ve ever seen? My favourite movie is probably Desperately Seeking Susan. You have the exact same meal for the next 12 months. What’s your pick? A nice big plate of champ (a mashed potato dish I had in Ireland). What two things would be on your deserted island? Maybe my phone and a Swiss army knife Favorite website? www.iheartdogs.com In 10 years I see myself…… In ten years I see myself travelling, working all over the world maybe. I’m not the kind of person who tends to think that far ahead, I prefer to take life as it comes.

It’s not just the sea... it‘s also things we do on the land that impact Maui Dolphins and our ocean Storm water Drains on our streets flow straight to sea. This means that any chemicals and rubbish that flow down the drains go out to our harbours and oceans.

Run-off Some land uses increase the amount of soil washed out to sea. In NZ around 390 million tonnes of run-off enters our marine environment each year. It can include chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides that are harmful to our marine creatures.

Coastal development Building ports, roads, communication lines and sewage systems, which are important for our communities to grow and prosper, can affect the habitats of the creatures living there.

Coastal Care Harbours, mangroves, sand dunes and estuaries are important for many marine and coastal species life-cycle, including the species Maui Dolphins depend on for food. We need to manage the use of these areas carefully.

This is the amount of rubbish found in just one storm water drain in Auckland City

Waste water and sewage Sewage must be treated properly to reduce the impact it has on the environment, but even individual actions can pollute the ocean.

They ran, they jumped and they paddled!! Our wonderful Whaingaroa Business Community played a big part in the Xtreme Zero Waste Recycled Raft Race, through their generous donations, each and every entry got a prize pack at the end of the day. A big thanks to Dave Hannah – Raglan Ray White for your cash donation, this provided the First, Second, Third and Best Raft cash prizes. The race would not be possible, without the support of our local water safety organisations. Raglan Surf Life Saving and Raglan Volunteer Coastguard. The wonderful support from Raglan Kayaks ensured all rafters had life jackets, and they provided extra eyes on the water during the race. Awesome job with Maui Dolphin Day Whaingaroa Environment Centre….!! So Whaingaroa….only 11 months to go until RACE TIME AGAIN!!....we look forward to seeing you all there next year.

Thanks to Trust Waikato and our local EnviroMatters

Waikato District Council continues to advise the public not to swim, fish or collect seafood within the Raglan Harbour until further notice following the sewerage overflow last Friday evening. It is estimated that approximately 10 cubic metres of wastewater entered Raglan Harbour at the time of high tide following the event. Waikato District Council General Manager Service Delivery Tim Harty says Council staff continue to sample the water on a daily basis and to work with Waikato District Health Board and Waikato Regional Council to determine when the advisory notice on the harbour can be removed. He says, “It can take around five days to receive test results from the sampling, so it is possible signs may be removed by the weekend.”
