ON THE COVER

Bangin’ Beachwear for 2012

By Courtney Danielson and Elise French Tanned, taut, tantalizing. Oh how we love the exposed flesh of summer. And although one of the great things about this time of year is that we can throw on cut-offs and a tank top with basically no thought and be good to go, there is one summer clothing item we need to put a bit more planning into ~ that’s right, I’m talking about … dun dun…the all-important swimsuit. Now, I’ll be the first to say that rule #1 is that you have to feel comfortable in whatever bathing suit/beach attire you choose. It’s hard to enjoy a day at the beach if you’re constantly worried about something popping out to say hello or that if you bend over your too-small bikini bottom might disappear forever. So yes, always ~ and this goes for both guys and gals ~ choose something that’s flattering to your shape, that you can move in, and that doesn’t make you look like you don’t have a mirror at home (‘cause remember, these days, there’s almost no chance that someone’s not going to take your picture and instantly post it everywhere for the cyberworld to see). That said, beach wear ~ from bathing suits to accessories to cover ups ~ follows trends just like the other parts of our wardrobes, so whether you want to go full-on trendy and get exactly what you saw walk down the runway or prefer incorporating elements of a trend more subtly into your look, here are some tips on what’s hot for Summer 2012. From delicate lace detailing to rocker-chic studs , women’s bathing suit trends are all over the map this season, but that just means more chances to find the suit of your dreams.

FOR THE LADIES Trend #1: Lace Details This season’s first trend is a throwback to something we saw last year, but designers have upped the ante ~ and now the sky’s the limit on the sexiness factor. Last year’s demure lace details have given way to a full-blown lace lingerie extravaganza in swimsuit form, but you can still find a happy medium between looking too young and cutesy and looking like you just wandered off a porn set. Think: eye-catching and feminine. Trend #2: Bandeau Tops There’s nothing that ruins a great tan more than a whole bunch of strap patterns across your back and shoulders. But there’s also nothing more embarrassing than putting on your strapless bikini top and having the girls head rapidly towards your knees or, heaven forbid, pop out of your strapless bikini top the minute you get into public ~ so this trend comes with a warning: know your boobs and whether they can handle strapless. If they can, go ahead and step out in one of this season’s bandeau tops. These designs aren’t entirely new, but the old classic has been improved upon with the addition of fabulously placed ruching and fantastic neon colors. Trend #3: Embellishments Super-confident and like to stand out in a crowd? Then definitely choose a swimsuit that’s sporting some bling. At first glance it may not seem practical for swimming in the ocean or diving into a pool, but designers have found a way to add jewels, rivets, and other hardware to their swimsuit lines while keeping them water-friendly. My favorite styles this year have large, brooch-like designs that add color, shine, and some whimsy to your suit ~ and can take you from pool to post-pool-party party with their sparkle. Plus, no need to add a lot of additional jewelry that would likely get lost and probably give you some odd tan lines anyway! Trend #4: Retro Throwbacks As they say, everything old is new again, although the true classics never really go out of style. You can never go wrong with a simple black and white polka dot pattern, but if you want all eyes on you, spice it up with an assortment of bright neon colors! Ruffles are everywhere this year, too, and when strategically placed can be used to accentuate your assets or cover anything you want to hide. If you’re a bit on the theatrical side, why not go for the whole retro Betty Paige/Vargas girl pinup look?

Trend #5: One Pieces Please don’t tell me you think one pieces can’t be sexy. Please. Sure, if you feel most comfortable in a straightforward one piece, monochromatic suit, that’s exactly what you should get ~ that’s a great go-to look that’ll never go out of style. But have you seen how far one pieces have come? Cutouts, top and bottom connected by the tiniest of strings, insanely high cut legs and low cut tops, brilliant colors and patterns…and the best part is that with so many different one piece configurations, you really can find one that is drop-dead sexy but still covers your less fave body parts!

The Add-Ons So you’ve got the suit and you feel good about it. Awesome. Now it’s time to complete your beach look by adding a cover up, some sexy shoes, and maybe a tote…and a hat. Let’s talk about the cover up first. Trend #1: Animal Print Animal prints are showing up everywhere this year, so it only makes sense that they’ve made it to the beach, too. Animal prints are all the rage, but there’s a new twist ~ we’re used to “reality” colors like brown, black, and white, but this season, animal prints come in a whole assortment of colors and range from the transparent gossamer to light cotton ~ and also range from sporty and practical to fancy enough to fit right in at a summer dinner party. Trend #2: Lace Oh yes, lace truly is everywhere this season. Whether you opt for a completely lace cover up (and bear in mind, it’s up to you exactly how much you want to cover…styles range from dangerously short tunics to full length, flowy shells) or one that only has lace accents, you’ll look feminine and breezy…And if white lace isn’t your thing, no worries ~ colored lace abounds. Trend #3: Nautical The nautical look ~ some years very literal and others, more…interpretational ~ never, ever seems to go out of style. You can be 8, 18, or 80 and still pull it off in some way, shape, or form. This year, choose from nautical emblems, blue and white stripes, red and white stripes, and nautical collars to show your appreciation for the sea. Some cover-ups are substantial (and long) enough to double as a dress for a cookout or casual date with your sweetie… and if you’re lucky enough to own a boat or have a fabulous friend who owns a fabulous yacht, perfect!

And now for your Beach Bag: Whether you’re heading to the beach or the pool, your regular handbag probably isn’t going to cut it. You need something that can withstand the sand, chlorine, and sun while also carrying everything you usually need in addition to your towel, sun block, reading materials, cover-up, etc. If you’ve gone wild with color and pattern for your swimsuit, go for a monochromatic bag ~ if your suit is one or two colors, have a blast and go for a fun patterned bag. Your bag is the perfect way to incorporate a trend without going overboard (no pun intended)…animal prints, lace, nautical…And now is not the time to look for the finest leather on the market ~ go for canvas, sturdy cotton, even plastic. You’re also going to want a bag that gives you easy access to your stuff but has some sort of closure at the top ~ and if it comes with a smaller bag where you can keep your phone, ID, cash, and credit cards safe, even better! And How About a Hat? It seems that a girl can up her cuteness factor immeasurably by donning a bright, floppy-brimmed hat…and that some girls ~ now mind you, I said some…can bring grown men to their knees by oh-so-casually throwing on a cowboy hat with a bikini. Ok, I can see where you guys are coming from…but ladies, if you’re going to wear a hat because it provides protection from the sun or because you want every guy on the beach imagining you riding the mechanical bull, there are still some rules. The most important rule is that if you have a big accessory on your head, tone down what you’re wearing from the neck down. Remember, too, that hats keep your body heat in, so look for something with a big brim and a close weave, but still made out of a fabric that breathes. Want to pull in that embellishment trend? Pin a broach to your hat, find one with some tasteful metal studs, iron on an anchor appliqué, or trim it with lace. Or find a hat with bold polka dots. I’d stay away from a sailor’s cap, though…too costumey. I’ve saved the best for the last…SHOES! I adore shoes. They are my happy place. I have an entire walk-in closet devoted to shoes and boots. But I do have to say that (and I might be making some enemies here) shoe styles have gotten a wee bit out of hand lately. I mean, c’mon…4 inch platforms with 5 inch wedges? Straps that buckle half-way up our calves? 3 inch platforms with metal tipped 6 inch stiletto heels? The average woman’s height used to be about 5’ 5” ~ now it’s about 6 feet. Now, while I admit there’s a time and place (midnight, the bedroom/corner) for such monumental footwear, let’s be sensible about what we wear to the beach, aka that place with all the sand, rocks, and skimpy outfits. Wear stilettos and you’ll either break an ankle or take an hour to make it over to your friends (who may or may not mock you for looking like a hooker). Wear those high platform clunkers with just a bathing suit and your feet will look enormous. Let’s compromise ~ how about a nice wedge mule that you don’t mind getting wet? Or a wedge sandal Model: Christine Sullivan, Holden, MA Photographer: Justin Mayotte, that will stay put if you’re going to Flash House Studios be walking on sand? We don’t want Hair and Make-Up: Lilly C to sacrifice the height that’s going July 2012

FOR THE MEN So it seems like the grass is indeed always greener. We ladies get to pick out cute swimwear outfits and accessorize and coordinate to our hearts’ content while men have (if they are smart) only a few options. But that means the stakes are much higher and the prep time much longer for us…and guys have it so easy!! But “easy” doesn’t mean there aren’t some things for the men to take into consideration before “swimsuiting up.” The Majority Most guys ~ tall, short, fit, chubby, pale, tan… whatever ~ should stick to board shorts. And the board shorts should be in a color that does not instantly become see-through when moisture (sweat or water, thank you very much, pervs) hits it. There are lots of hearty colors to choose from and designers have given their blessing to guys wearing pink and neon colors.

And as we all know, board shorts come in every pattern under the sun, so live it up. One note of caution, though ~ if you’re on the shorter side, take a look at how far past your knees your board shorts go. A tiny bit above the knee, fine. At the knee or a tiny bit below, fine. Inching down towards your calf muscles? Oh dear boy take them off and find a shorter pair or you’re going to look like you’re standing in a hole. The Truly Blessed There are on this earth men who ~ whether by genetics or obsession ~ possess The Perfect Body. For them, it’s acceptable (and preferable, if I have a good view) to don square-cut boxer brief style swimsuits. In black. And body hugging, not nut-hugging. Y’feel me? The Always Prepared Some guys don’t leave home, even for the beach, without a Leatherman, iPod, sunscreen, Frisbee, pack of (shame on you) cigarettes, keys, gum, bottle opener, lighter, sunglasses, change, etc. For these quasi-MacGyvers, cargo shorts ~ with their thousand and one pockets ~ are cool…and luckily, they come in primarily muted colors ~ olive, khaki, navy. And cargo shorts have this lovely habit of sliding down just far enough in the front to make ladies’ imaginations ignite. And Finally, Don’t You Ever… …wear jean shorts or a Speedo. Or sandals with socks. Or a T-shirt that says, “Bikini Inspector.” I’m not kidding. Don’t do it. Don’t even think about it. Are we clear? In that case… HAVE A GREAT (AND STYLISH!) SUMMER, EVERYONE!

to make our legs look absolutely fab, but pitching headlong into the sand just ain’t that sexy. And hey, even flip flops are acceptable ON the beach ~ after all, you have a ginormous tote bag where you can hide a sexier pair of shoes for later. The same rules apply for shoes as for totes and hats ~ go crazy with color if that’s your one statement piece ~ otherwise, think muted colors (which will make your legs look longer, anyway)…and the trend that Crocs started, all those little accessories you can add onto them to customize your feet, has gone mainstream, so lots of places sell little flowers or bows or metal designs that you can clip right to your shoes.

An Interview with Levi Benton of Miss May I By Katey Khaos

ENTERTAINMENT

Summer is back, and that means it’s time for one of my (and probably your!) favorite things ~ outdoor concerts. More specifically, it’s time for one of the best all- day events music (and more), the Vans Warped Tour. This year’s Warped Tour lineup is offers, as always, a wide range of genres, including some killer metal acts including Miss May I.

Miss May I have also been working hard to put out their latest album At Heart, which was released on June 12th . As Benton reveals, the album doesn’t work around the idea of “…my girlfriend broke up with me, and here’s a breakdown,” but instead is like a “football playbook” where everything is organized, and there are no repeats.

Levi Benton, lead vocalist and band co-founder, was kind enough to take a break from swimming in the Gulf of Mexico to talk to the Pulse about what Miss May I have up their sleeves.

Miss May I have had awesome opportunities, including being a part of the evergrowing Pop Goes Punk series. If you haven’t heard of it, you’re in for a real treat. Bands like Miss May I take a radio hit and cover it, but to the tune of their own music. For example, Miss May I took on “Run This Town” by Jay-Z and put a metal twist on it. “It’s a fun game for us,” Benton explains.

I decided to first ask about the name Miss May I, wondering if there were an interesting story behind it “There’s no cool story behind our name, just us being stupid and trying to come up with something different,” Benton says. Well, mission accomplished! As mentioned, Miss May I is one of the nearly one hundred bands playing at this year’s Warped Tour. “This year, we’re playing main stage, and I still don’t believe it ~ I won’t believe it until we’re actually playing.” In addition to doing Warped Tour, Miss May I are also touring with other awesome metal bands like Whitechapel and Parkway Drive. With the better part of their summer booked with shows, how do they spend their much-deserved downtime on the tour bus? “Girlfriends and video games,” Benton says. “I have Battlefield, a TV and an Xbox that I bring on tour ~ I have a suitcase for all of it.”

What does the future holds for these rapidly rising stars? “Being in a band is a life choice. It got legit really fast. We got our [record] deal in high school, and we were already lined up for going to college …We have plans for after [the band]. We know we’re no Motley Crue,” Benton laughs. Be sure to catch Miss May I at this year’s Warped Tour when it hits Mansfield, MA on July 19th! Tickets are on sale now! www.facebook.com/missmayimusic

Jason Burns’ “Adults Only” Gets The Digital Comic Book Treatment By Jason Savio With the introduction of digital downloads, the music industry has seen hard-copy record sales become a shadow of its former self as online outlets like iTunes have taken over. Now, the comic book industry is making the transition from tangible to technological. One of the comics to hit the growing online collection is “Adults Only,” based on the hit live-action comedy web series of the same name. Written, directed, and produced by Attleboro native and comic book writer Jason Burns, “Adults Only” is about a down on his luck former Olympic athlete who finds himself having to work in his brother-in-law’s adult video store in order to make ends-meet. Shot in North Attleboro and Mansfield, “Adults Only” is the first foray into film for Burns’ digital production company, Plymouth Rock Creative (Read our article about the premier of PRC’s “Adults Only” at www.thepulsemag.com/wordpress/2012/03/03-12massachusetts%e2%80%99-plymouth-rock-creative-premiers-new-web-tv-comedy-withbig-name-talent). Because of the initial success of the “Adults Only” web series and the potential for a second season, Burns decided to go back to his comic book background ~ which includes work on popular titles such as the “Shrek” and “Kung-Fu Panda” comics ~ to fill the gap in between the two seasons. “What happened with the comic book was just sort of a surprise. There was interest in doing it as a one-shot to sort of follow what happened with the characters in between the first season and what would become the second season,” said Burns when we had a chance to talk. While some older collectors may balk at the idea of digital comics, Burns understands that in order to be successful in today’s comic industry, you don’t have much of a choice. “I do think [printed comics] will be obsolete. Not because the fans won’t want them, just because it will be impossible for the publishers to produce them,” predicted Burns. “The digital space cuts the budgets of a book greatly and allows the publishers to create more content.” The digital comic will be released through Ape Entertainment and Iverse comics and available to download this July. An exclusive print version of the “Adults Only” digital comic will also be available, but only at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con with Burns himself there to hand them out. Satellites Fall’s Lines On the Road By Alex Kantarelis

Satellites Fall has been bringing their unique sound to clubs all over the state and are now reaching out to even more fans with their new 5 song EP called Lines On the Road. The band was formed by Davey Moore and Mark Charron, who started the project nearly a decade ago. Charron, originally a classically trained pianist, and Moore, originally a drummer, decided they wanted to learn how to play guitar. They both bought acoustic guitars and learned how to play by writing songs together in their college dorm. Since (at the time) they weren’t the best guitarists, they opted not to play covers but instead write all their own material. As the years went by, they kept on playing ~ and finally decided it was time to put the project into full effect. Those simple acoustic based songs evolved into so much more as the duo recruited other members, turned into a full band, and hit the studio to record Lines On the Road, their debut EP. The songs that were written so long ago in their dorm room turned into massive productions with layers upon layers of different sounds. Combine a variety of guitars with keyboards, organs, synth, strings and as many vocals as you can cram into a track, and you get their sound. So imagine a brit-indie sound that mixes elements of The Killers with elements of The Cure. Most bands who add so much to their recordings struggle to match that sound live ~ but when SR plays live, all the added elements are still there, playing over a computer, creating a live sound that is 100% authentic to the recording. Charron, a native of Holden, is big fan of playing in the 508. “I love Worcester. Our favorite venue to play is Ralph’s Diner. When you walk into Ralph’s you can just feel rock and roll history,” he said. One thing that is for sure, they don’t plan on stopping any time soon. Their EP is currently available for FREE (so you have to download it ASAP - no excuses, people). Whiskey Bent By Jason Savio

Whiskey Bent is bringing back “good-time rock and roll’ to the local music scene. Fueled by music, creative energy, and a passion to perform and share their own original songs, WB is not letting up on the gas and is determined to get your attention. Their new EP (which can be purchased on iTunes) showcases their songwriting chops and classic blue-collar-rock approach. “This was the first time in the studio for WB,” says Ray Auger, the group’s vocalist, “It was a quick process. We wanted to get the music out as soon as we could as we were writing it. Our writing process is pretty simple: we drink, we jam on a riff and we get inspired.” With a simple and humble writing process, WB is a do-it-yourself band that focuses on the driving force of musically creative energy: getting in a room with your buddies and jamming. While they’ll play covers, they prefer the unique satisfaction that only an original piece of music can bring. “The real reward is playing your own music to a captive crowd,” says Auger, “When I am done I can listen back on music I created with a great bunch of guys. To me that’s priceless.” And as for Whiskey Bent’s influences? “A few guys named Jack, Jameson and Johnnie; they are some of our bad influences we hold so dearly to our hearts,” says Auger, “We are the band you not only drink to, but drink with!” And there, my friends, is what good-time rock and roll is all about. www.whiskeybentrock.com www.facebook.com/whiskeybentrock

The River Neva’s Chemistry of Holocaust By Alex Kantarelis

When the River Neva got their start a few years ago, they had a 5 song demo up on Myspace that showed their talent for thrashy metal and their general avoidance of the overdone nu-metal sound that has become all too pervasive in the music scene. Their new release ~ Chemistry of Holocaust ~ is a 5 song EP that is the next step in their evolution and adds top quality production to their already powerful sound. The EP kicks off with a ferocious squealing intro before the beat picks up and vocalist Trey Holton introduces us to his massive deep screams that hit like a separate rhythm instrument. Holton’s screams dominate a majority of the vocals until he suddenly shows his range by melodically singing the chorus, all while keeping it heavy. Whether he is screaming or singing, he has a voice that stands out. Song after song, the EP ~ just over 23 minutes ~ is relentless metal riffs and pounding double-bassfilled drums. The songs never get boring and I guarantee they’ll keep your blood pumping. Lyrically, the songs talk about the struggles of survival during desperate times, using the symbolism of war and death. The cover art sums everything up, showing a group of men dressed like they work on Wall Street ~ except that they’re wearing gas masks as if the world were coming to an end. While the songwriting and musicianship is top notch, it’s the production that really brings everything together. Rob Gil engineered the recording and brought out the best in the band. The songs have a certain clarity to them, all the while remaining textured and heavy. Oftentimes in the recording process, the heaviness is lost because the engineer wants to make the band sound like Katy Perry, but this recording is mixed so loud that it will peel the skin from your face. Totally heavy and totally brutal. Check it out if you’re a true fan of metal and get off on bands like All That Remains, Fear Factory, and Converge. www.reverbnation.com/theriverneva www.facebook.com/theriverneva July 2012

Josephine Angelini’s

STARCROSSED By Stephanie Monahan

Helen Hamilton knows she isn’t an ordinary teenager. She’s got more strength than a grown man twice her age, and she can run circles around the rest of her track team without even trying. And then there are the hallucinations, the three crying women who won’t leave her alone. Helen knows she’s different, but has no idea exactly how different she is ~ or what she is.

Starcrossed is the first in a young adult trilogy about teen descendants of Greek Gods. Author Josephine Angelini grew up in Ashland, MA and attended NYU. Though she’d always written, she never considered herself a “real” writer. “It took a long time for me to build up the courage to admit that writing was what I wanted to do as a profession,” she said during our interview. “It’s scary to put your writing out there and risk criticism.” Angelini was always a fan of fantasy and science fiction. “In college I was a classical theatre major, so I read all the ancient works by Aristophanes, Euripides, and Sophocles. Picking a storyline based on the Iliad was just a natural ‘write what you know’ thing.” Since Helen and Paris were teenagers in the Iliad, the Starcrossed trilogy is written from a teen’s point of view. Modernizing a story based on arranged marriage and a war started by a runaway bride was challenging, but Angelini managed to construct a contemporary novel and created Helen, descended from Helen of Troy, and Lucas, son of Apollo, who must resist their attraction to each other or else be responsible for cataclysmic consequences. This modern-day telling of The Iliad takes place in Nantucket for three reasons. “The first is that I’m from Massachusetts, so I wanted to set my story in a place I know,” Angelini explained. “The second is that I needed to isolate my main character. Helen of Troy was trapped inside a walled city for ten years while the war went on and I wanted to ‘trap’ my Helen by surrounding her somehow, and the best way to do that was on an island.” The third reason is simple: “It’s really beautiful. I love it there!” Angelini will be on Nantucket for the Nantucket Book Festival June 15-17, signing books and talking with readers.

Dreamless, the trilogy’s second installment, was released in May 2012 and is available in stores and online. Goddess, the final book, will be out in May 2013.

ON CD Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket’s Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket

groove, blues, soul, R&B...Quite simply, we choose what moves us.”

I am sitting at my computer at work and I click a link that begins playing Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket’s CD. All of a sudden, my cube walls flare with tie dye flashes of color, psychedelically spinning in time to the beat. A disco ball appears over my head where the A/C vent used to be. My suit is replaced instantly by red bellbottom jeans and a silk blouse complete with butterfly collar ~ and I have a white girl afro. Daisies and peace signs fall from the sky onto my desk. I am in 1970 and mellow.

BODB, who has shared the stage with the likes of Michael “Kidd Funkadelic” Hampton (of George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic), Tracy Bonham, and Dopapod, and is inspired by artists including James Brown, the Beastie Boys, and Sly & The Family Stone, view music as a uniting force. Says Badalato, “Everything in life is about balance and harmony; music is an expression of this. Music brings us together, unites us and transcends all our differences. It’s the key to everything and the heartbeat of the universe. It makes us laugh, cry, makes us strong, makes us weak... it’s the driving force behind us all, whether we acknowledge it or not.”

By Jennifer Russo

This music puts the groove in groovy. You would swear you were listening to oldies radio, but this band is happenin’ today right under your very noses. I had a chance to chat with keyboardist extraordinaire Brett Badalato ~ also known as “Reverend Bad Funk” ~ about their style choice and he tells me that they “… like to consider our sound as Beantown Funk. To us that means the sounds of Boston nightlife ~ rooted in funk, but also incorporating rock, hip hop, Latin step,

Centerlink’s Centerlink By Jason Savio

Centerlink’s three song self-titled EP is a smash and grab job; it’s short, fast, and at the end of listening to it you are left wondering what just happened. It’s a musical drive-by. Like most metal groups, the Boston band wear their testosterone-fueled badge proudly in hopes of being the deputies who bring hard rock back to town. If this quick EP is any indication, Centerlink ~ formed from members of UpperHand and Den of Thieves ~ could be well on their way to a successful run. Even though they tease us with only three songs, Centerlink (Parky ~ guitars, vocals, Jon ~ drums, and Billy-K ~ bass, vocals) manage to pack a lot in and offer a pretty good idea of what they’re all about. Lyrics aside, the band shows some suave sophistication with their musicianship. There are

The Dunwells’ Blind Sighted Faith By Joshua Lyford

Playing a record for the first time ~ without any preconceived notions about the band’s sound ~ is one of life’s simple pleasures. Sometimes you find your new favorite band, sometimes you wind up listening to something unintentionally hilarious or just plain bad. Luckily, The Dunwells belong to the former group. The band hides the aural content of their debut album, Blind Sighted Faith, well. The cover art is nondescript and discreet, showing only an artsy city skyline at the foreground of a brightly burning sun; inside the plastic, however, is a well-rounded alternative record courtesy of Dave Hanson and brothers Joseph and David Dunwell taking on guitar and vocals and Rob Clayton and Jonny Lamb holding down the rhythm section and also lending their vocal chops.

Grab BODB’s debut CD, pick out some funky merch, keep tabs on upcoming groove sessions or hear their music at their official website: www. bigoldirtybucket.com ~ and be sure to like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/funkybucket. While you’re at it, check out a video of them playing live at www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0bv6vCa6nY. distorted guitars that leave plenty of sore behinds, but Parky’s guitar solos, especially the one that opens “The Fallen,” are more lyrical and much more than just a flurry of notes being spewed out for the sake of making noise. The heavy pounder “Fight Back” is sure to be a crowd rager that’ll get the mosh pit going with its chanting chorus and locomotive tempo. The final track, “Vindictive,, encapsulates the sound of Centerlink and has an upbeat Iron Maiden inspired riff that doesn’t get bogged down in the black mire other metal/hard rock riffs often do. There’s no mistake that these guys can kick plenty of ass, but thanks to the rhythm section, they do it with a swing rather than a stumble. With some old school swagger, Centerlink proves that not all metal has to be rhythmless . For more info, visit www.reverbnation.com/centerlink.

The CD starts off with the single “I Could Be a King” and by the time you hit its fourth song, “Only Me,” the record has painted your mental canvas with every hue in the musical color spectrum. Brush strokes from pop radio, folk, and something similar to, but not quite exactly like, modern country keep the album interesting throughout its eleven songs. The band has guitar and vocal melodies coming at you from all directions, which is a huge asset to their sound. On songs like “Follow the Road,” the guitar work does a great job of creating a sweaty southern atmosphere and the vocal harmonies make you wonder if there is a choir of sweet, sweet angels inside your speakers. FingerCuff’s Live Band Karaoke By Tine Roycroft

FingerCuff, a talented and energetic band that’s been around since 2000, is rocking your Thursday and Sunday nights this summer with live band karaoke that’s guaranteed to make everyone ~ from the warblers to the practiced “Glee” fans ~ feel like the next American Idol. But if you’ve seen one scrolling blue screen with lyrics, you’ve seen them all, right? Wrong. But what separates FingerCuff from the pack of instrumental-track-carrying DJs? “The people who come to see us get to rock out with a live band and live out their dreams,” Noel Nickerson, MC and lead vocalist, says. “If someone goes into a verse too soon, or someone gets mixed up, our live band plays to the singer as opposed to a recorded track which just keeps going so everyone knows you messed up. I also help with the vocals, so if you’re a little off tune, I can help you.” FingerCuff is made up of Noel Nickerson, John Nickerson on FingerCuff live karaoke at the Lucky Dog guitar and vocals, Tom Curley and Mark Keane on bass, and Neil McNulty and Greg Prendergast on drums. On Thursdays, FingerCuff heads to FingerCuff can play over 170 songs, but they constantly update their book and the Angry Ham in Framingham where, according to Nickerson, people take their learn new songs to keep each night fresh. Aside from their club gigs, FingerCuff karaoke quite seriously. Now every other Sunday, the band brings the house puts together great private or corporate events for birthday parties or company down at Worcester’s Lucky Dog, where people are just out for a relaxed, fun functions. Or you can sign up for their Rockstar Boot Camp for a personally time. tailored rock n’ roll time. Though the crowd types vary, one thing stays the same ~ a love of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin.’” Journey. “Everybody loves that song,” Nickerson laughs. Despite repeated requests “…to hold on to that feeling,” the members of FingerCuff always treat each singer’s request with great respect and enthusiasm. Still, when not at a gig, Nickerson confesses to hitting the scan button in her car whenever the song comes on the radio.

“We give you a whole experience,” Nickerson explains. “We work with you to create an entire set of songs. You attend practices in our studio and you experience the process of being in a band. At the end, you’re a rock star.” For more info, go to www.fingercuff.net.

A Special Edition By Katey Khaos I’ve talked all about the terrific upcoming games that were previewed and demoed at PAX East. However, I didn’t mention the concert that happens every year where all the gamers have a chance to nerd out to video game music and more! I was lucky enough to speak with one of the performers at this year’s PAX East, Jonathan Coulton, more commonly known as JoCo by his fans. He is an amazing artist, and if the name doesn’t ring a bell, a couple of his songs definitely will. “Still Alive” and “Want You Gone,” the ending credit tracks for Portal and Portal 2 respectively, are Coulton’s. PULSE: What was it like performing “Still Alive” at PAX East 2012 and having everyone (myself included!) in the audience know the lyrics? JoCo: It’s always such fun to play that song for an audience. At PAX in particular it has taken on this anthemic quality, with everyone holding their phones and Nintendo DSs in the air singing along. One year my ukuleleplaying friends Molly and Kristen played a version of that song at the PAX concert, and somehow the tech failed and they weren’t amplified. But it didn’t matter because the audience knew and sang the whole thing, like we were around a campfire with 6,000 people.

20 THEPULSEMAG.COM | July 2012

PULSE: Jonathan, you are a self-proclaimed geek. What are some nerdy activities you enjoy in your spare time? JoCo: I wish I had any spare time at all! My days are spent, um, working I guess? It’s hard to really define what it is that I do all day, but I sure do feel busy. And then when I’m not working I’m hanging out with my kids, who are still at the age where they actually want to spend time with me, thank goodness. One of the blessings and curses of being your own boss is that work and non-work zones bleed into one another; in my spare moments I catch up on feeds, read tech blogs, and play with the various software- and hardware-based musical gizmos that I’ve acquired for just such puttering purposes. I used to play a lot of games, but just don’t have the time to do a lot of hardcore console stuff anymore, and as a result I’ve gravitated towards more casual iOS gaming. PULSE: What are some of your favorite video games, classic and current? JoCo: I just got over a nasty Ski Safari addiction. I continue to think that Trainyard is the best puzzle game I’ve ever played. Right now I’m kind of in love with this music-making app for the iPad called Tabletop, and trying to keep myself from buying all the add-on effects and instruments all at once. Some of my favorites from the past include Portal (obviously), Half-Life, Braid. The whole Lego series has been a great way to spend time gaming with my kids. The interview continues online at www.thepulsemag.com, and be sure to check out our HOT SHOTS section for photos of JoCo live!

Strong Women Get Dirt y

COOL CAREERS By Rachel Shuster

Who said girls can’t get a little dirty? Certainly not Katherine Fairbanks, owner of DirtyGirl Disposal, a female-owned and operated waste disposal company.

garbage and transferring it into their truck. It was that moment that they declared themselves “dirty girls,” and the idea for DirtyGirl Disposal was born.

DirtyGirl Disposal focuses on helping women break out of traditional jobs by providing mentoring and guidance that enables them to obtain their Commerical Driver’s License (CDL) (Class B). DirtyGirl Disposal strives to empower women and provide employment opportunities to work within the company as truck drivers.

After obtaining her CDL and seeking business advice, Fairbanks opened DirtyGirl Disposal in 2009 with the support of Rachel and older daughter Megan. “It was a learning curve at first. There weren’t any women truck drivers. In my research I found that women wanted to drive but weren’t given the same opportunities to do so as men,” she said.

DirtyGirl Disposal currently serves MetroWest and Central MA and specializes in the retrieval and delivery of roll-off containers from homes, small businesses and apartments. They also collect from areas like industrial, commercial and construction zones. The company also offers services inlcuding junk removal, waste disposal and recycling.

DirtyGirl Disposal aims to stand out from other waste removal companies despite stiff competition. “We want to represent empowerment for women to do anything. You don’t need to be a tough girl to be a truck driver…embrace your femininity,” Fairbanks said.

Fairbanks, who is a registered nurse, holds a degree in education, and is a mother of three, has been actively involved in the waste industry since 1990. “I was doing traditional female, behind- the- scene work ~ office type, secretarial work. At times I would go out on a truck and do things that wouldn’t get done,” she said.

DirtyGirl Disposal also puts out a DirtyGirl calendar. “The calendar is produced and sold at mall kiosks during the holiday season, sold on Amazon and our website, and given away to customers. Part of the proceeds from calendar sales go into a fund to help defer the cost of teaching women for their CDL class B with air brakes,” Fairbanks adds.

In 2005, Fairbanks bought out the waste management company named Millbury Rubbish Removal which she owned with her now ex-husband. Though times were tough, Fairbanks had a new-found strength and power to move on and up.

In the future Fairbanks, plans to open DirtyGirl Driving School. “I am in the process of becoming a professional driving instructor. Through this we also plan to offer financial assistance to women (and men!) who can’t afford to go through normal driving school,” Fairbank adds.

During a routine route one summer day in 2006 with her daughter Rachel, Fairbanks notice that the two of them were covered in muck from collecting

So Long Nightmares, Hello Sweet Dreams: New iPhone App Lets You Design Your Dreams By Steph Moore

Ever wish you could plan out what (or whom) you’d dream about at night? Well, over 100 iPhone users in Cambridge are, thanks to Harvard grad student Daniel Nadler , doing just that ~ programming their dreams. Nadler developed Sigmund, an app that is both a standard alarm clock and a dream controlling machine. It allows you to select up to five words you’d like incorporate into your dreams and then has you enter information about your sleep schedule. Before heading to bed, just place the phone about four feet away, and during your REM cycles it will repeat the words you selected. Nadler developed Sigmund with the help of Harvard alum Yuhki Yamashita and Doug Feigelson, an MIT student who’s programmed in more than 1,000 pre-recorded words, according to the Harvard Crimson. While Nadler acknowledges that some words are more powerful than others ~ like “beach,” “restaurants,” and “girlfriend” ~ others have used the app and said it’s worked.

One student told the Crimson, “I once put in ‘running, mountains, trees, lake’ and dreamt I was running on a trail in the East Sierras.” Sigmund costs 99 cents, but hey, if you can have Rob Pattinson, a pina colada, and a pair of Louboutins for under a dollar, sounds like a pretty good deal to me!

DINING & ENTERTAINING

By Bernie Whitmore Joey’s Bar & Grill 344 Chandler Street, Worcester 508-797-3800 www.joeysbarandgrill.com Dinner at Joey’s has always been a good time. At the edge of Coes Pond, it was a bit out of the way, but the place did virtually write the book on informal dining; they featured a friendly staff, a reasonably priced menu spiked with creative dishes, and a proprietor who cares about his customers. Some days we were extra lucky and had Angela wait on us ~ but the cuisine’s never been a chance affair, we’ve always left satisfied and with a smile. With these memories in mind, I’ve been a bit wary of Joey’s move to Chandler Street. I mean, why tamper with success? It didn’t help that for their first few months in the new location it was all but impossible to get a table without waiting longer than reasonable in Worcester. I had to assume they’ve done something extraordinary in order to have attained this level of popularity... and I wistfully recalled the old Joey’s. Then, on a cold and drizzly June weeknight, we finally found Joey’s less than packed and decided it was our chance to see what everyone was so excited about. We were greeted enthusiastically and immediately led to a booth. The dining room’s been updated, with a wood-paneled ceiling and a few transplanted pieces from the old Joey’s. Even better, within moments we began to recognize the staff and before long Angela was teasing us and just as friendly as ever. After a few minutes of catching up, she took our drink order ~ I ordered a glass of Harpoon IPA; the orangey color and tangy-sharp bitter flavor are a classic you can enjoy any time of year ~ and left us with menus. We decided to start with an order of Lobster Rangoons. Traditionally made with crab, this is a dish that I usually regard with aloof disdain. But Joey’s has reworked the tired formula by “coming honest” and packing theirs with real bits of lobster meat and plenty of lobster flavor. They haven’t totally jettisoned the cream cheese base, but they’ve devised a recipe that would be a hit at any cocktail party. The menu referred to seasonal specials, but as near as I could tell the season was still winter with specials including Braised Lamb Shank, my friend’s entrée

choice. Perfect for a chilly evening, this is a dish that defines the term “comfort food.” Served over a mound of buttery mashed potatoes, the long, thin bones were laden with slabs of meat that, after hours in the oven, was tender and flavor-packed. The huge shank was served with a forest of broccoli florets, deep green and crunchy. Dishes like this make the colder months something to look forward to. Other entrees were a step into the warmer time of year. My Grilled Spicy Jumbo Shrimp, an order of four, were served over orzo mixed with melty feta cheese, bright red roasted pepper strips, and shiny tomato halves. Fresh basil and green wilted spinach leaves rounded out the flavors and color. The meal was a study in glowing primary colors, but the shrimp were the main event; perfectly grilled, they were fresh and juicy with little bits of char that burst with rich flavor. We finished with a towering wedge of Bean Counter’s lemon cream cake. Most of Joey’s desserts are home made and very tempting. But it had been a while since I last had a slice of the Bean Counter’s star feature (in my opinion) and it’s as good as ever, with subtly flavored layers of cake spread with tart lemon cream and mousse. People in the business of selling stuff believe they can get our attention with two simple words: New! Improved! Most of us yawn and change the channel. But Joey’s move to Chandler Street is exactly that: they’ve kept all the things they excelled at and moved them to a new, bigger and better location.

Hot & Now By Paul Giorgio

AND THE WINNER IS. Well, the Taste of Shrewsbury Street is over. Almost 5,000 people participated in the annual kick-off to summer on Worcester’s Shrewsbury Street. So who’s the best of the 40 restaurants on the street? The winners are 7 Nana, the just-opened Japanese steak house ~ and, for the 2nd consecutive year, Sweet, for their Strawberry Shortcake cupcake. The best party spot? The Flying Rhino, which had about 1,000 people in its parking lot. NOT THE ICE CREAM MAN. The first Worcester Food Truck Festival will be held on Saturday, July 14 at Worcester’s Elm Park. Almost 30 food trucks from around New England will participate in this unique event. The cost of a ticket is $30 (or $35 day of) and allows you to try food from each of the trucks. For more information, including a list of foods offered, visit www.foodtruckfestivalsofNE.com. 7 NANA FINALLY OPENS. 7 Nana, the much anticipated Japanese mega steakhouse, has finally opened at 60 Shrewsbury Street. Owner Jack Lu spent over $1 million renovating what was once a car dealer’s office ~ and the results are stunning. They feature several rooms with Teppanyaki tables, a large sushi bar, and private rooms for functions. NO GENTLEMEN FROM VERONA. The Verona Grill on Route 70 in Shrewsbury abruptly closed its doors in June. No word yet on if there will be new owners taking over. IT’S NOT PICCADILLY CIRCUS. The Piccadilly Pub on Worcester’s Shrewsbury Street closed earlier this year when the Canadian company that owned them went bankrupt. Recently, a group of former employees leased the space and will be opening Piccadilly Bar & Grill. It will feature the same menu and a great many familiar faces among the staff. Now if we can only get the Stanley Cup back. THE TAVERN GETS NEW OWNER. The Tavern on the Common in Rutland was recently sold and has been under new management since June. They had been there for 10 years, serving American food. No word yet on what the new owners plan to do. PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON. We hear that one of the area’s favorite places for Mai Tais and maybe Chinese food will be closing its doors to make way for a drugstore. Word is that the Dragon 88 on Route 140 in Boylston will be closing. We will keep you posted. WALKING A TIGHTROPE. The center of Northboro has a new restaurant. Zem Han, a Mediterranean style restaurant featuring foods from Turkey, Greece, and Italy recently opened in what was once the old Town Hall and former home of Tom’s. The new eatery is owned by Yuri Krasnov, a former tightrope walker from the Moscow Circus. The Chef will be Yusef Usta, originally from Turkey and most recently from New York. Krasnov also wants to open a location in Worcester once this place gets off the ground. MOUNTAIN AND SEA. The space that once housed Caffe Espresso on Worcester’s Wall Street is undergoing a complete renovation and will shortly be reopening as an Italian restaurant, still run by the former owners of Caffe Espresso. It will be called Monte (mountain) & Mari (Sea). BIRTHDAY WISHES. We congratulate the Canal District’s Square One and Perfect Game on having been open for two years now, and Shrewsbury Street’s Nuovo on its first year in business.

Brew

Massachusetts’ Bully Boy Distillers By Rick Garner

Bully Boy Distillers is owned and operated by MA brothers Will and Dave Willis, who first became interested in brewing/distilling as children after stumbling upon a collection of Prohibition-era spirits hidden in an underground vault of their family’s working farm that once served as a speakeasy. With names like “Medford Rum” and “Cow Whiskey,” these precursors to today’s craft spirits were harsh and remarkably undrinkable, but they had character. The Willis boys’ interest quickly evolved from cider production to stovetop distilling to starting their own full-scale craft distillery. Paying close attention to the caliber of ingredients used in its products, Bully Boy hand-produces premium spirits in small batches, emphasizing quality over quantity. As homage to the farm, the distillery is named after Bully Boy, a favorite farm workhorse. Will and Dave’s great-grandfather named his beloved horse using a term coined by his college roommate, none other than Teddy Roosevelt: “Bully,” meaning superb or wonderful. Bully Boy Distillers is proud to carry on MA’s tradition of small-batch distilling and handmade beverages ~ white rum, Boston rum, vodka, white whiskey, and wheat whiskey ~ that taste as superb as the quality of their ingredients. The attention to detail has paid off, as Bully Boy spirits have received exceptional ratings from the Beverage Tasting Institute’s International Review of Spirits. Bully Boy made its official Worcester debut with a complimentary tasting event at The Armsby Abbey earlier this year, and is available for purchase at Julio’s Liquors – Westboro, Vin Bin – Marlboro, Wine Nation – Millbury, Mass Liquors – Worcester, and at many other locations viewable on the BB website, www.bullyboydistillers.com. Derek McCaffrey: Having a Ball with the Worcester Hydra By Kim Dunbar

The first time Worcester Hydra Coach Elvis Comrie met Derek McCaffrey, he thought the kid was making fun of him.

chose it over basketball because it gave him the best chance to attend a good college and perhaps one day play professionally.

“When I looked at him, he was laughing,” said Comrie, who soon realized it was simply part of McCaffrey’s personality. “He is the happiest kid I’ve ever been around. He’s always smiling.”

McCaffrey has never shied away from capitalizing on a good opportunity. At the encouragement of his coaches, he tried out for Worcester as a way to stay in shape and improve his skills over the summer. According to Comrie, that’s the sign of a great athlete.

The 20-year-old Groton native has plenty to be happy about ~ as a soccer standout at Boston University, McCaffrey has, as Comrie explained, managed to “play himself into a role of being an important player” for the Worcester Hydra in its inaugural season. On June 9, McCaffrey scored the winning goal, and his first of the season, to help lift the Hydra over CFC Azul. It was the first goal for McCaffrey, who will be a junior at BU this fall, since October of his freshman season. “As a coach, you look for a guy you can trust, who is committed and ‘gets it,’” said Comrie. “He can soak in the information you give him and apply it immediately … He has the mental capacity to handle it and embrace the challenges.” Not bad for a kid who’s just getting around to tweaking his soccer skills. Born in Scotland, McCaffrey was exposed to soccer early on. After his family moved to the U.S. when he was three, McCaffrey fed his competitive appetite by playing multiple sports, starring in soccer and basketball at Groton Dunstable. “I was never focused fully on soccer in high school,” McCaffrey said. But as a junior, he realized he was pretty good at it and had a shot at playing for a Division I school. “That’s when I started to focus on it,” he said, adding that he

“It takes a great deal of commitment to play in the PDL,” said the coach. “It says a lot about what he wants for himself.” And McCaffrey, a midfielder who has proven to be a valuable and versatile team player, just wants to get better and help the Hydra make the playoffs. “I’m focused on the team stuff right now,” he said. He’s also showing his coach a thing or two off the pitch. “He teaches you not to take life so serious,” said Comrie. “He’s been a pleasure to work with.” For more information about the Worcester Hydra, visit www.hydrafc.com.

Local Director Finds International Success with the Art of the Music Video

Russell Rocheleau (L) directing “Granny Man”

By Bruce Elliot

It’s a cold, damp evening in October 2011, and a heavy drizzle has begun to fall on the final location of director Russell Rocheleau’s music video shoot for Otto Kinzel’s “I Want to Report a Murder.” “Camera 1?” “Rolling.” “Action!” A dark figure, in silhouette against a pair of headlights, gun drawn, stalks slowly towards two young lovers parked in a red Volkswagen Beetle. A flashlight flashes. Confusion is followed by terror. A shot rings out. Chaos! A young girl fumbles for a door handle and runs terror stricken into the dark rain. More shots, a couple lies dead, and Rockwater Pictures is born. Director Russell Rocheleau, a film freak from a young age, grew up in Lowell, and became drawn to Hammer horror and films by John Carpenter, Romero, and Cronenberg. After discovering Kubric, Scorcese, and Kirosawa, Rocheleau knew he wanted to pursue filmmaking. He enrolled in Fitchburg State’s small but acclaimed film program. “I shot, edited, mixed sound, all on 16mm film. I developed a discipline… a distinct vision and plan. I get my shots, and work very fast.” Though Rocheleau worked “all kinds of jobs outside of film just to pay the rent,” he knew he would one day return to film. “I’ve walked away from it again and again, but it’s the only thing I really love, and am even remotely good at.” While directing a show for NEGB1, “I began meeting musicians... and one thing led to another.” In the fall of 2011, Rocheleau met hardcore rocker Otto Kinzel, who had recently completed a concept album based on the Zodiac killer. Russell saw his chance. Shooting in digital video, he began creating the dark and menacing “I Want to Report a Murder.” It is a stylistic masterwork which delves into the mind of a serial killer, blending haunting images, frantic cuts, jarring titles, and an often moving camera to tell its horrific story. Rocheleau had found his calling. While most simply hear a song, Russell sees it. “The brain just starts creating pictures, triggering sensations… I try to capture those pictures and let the images and music dance together.”

36 THEPULSEMAG.COM | July 2012

“Zodiac”

With the success of “Murder” came an opportunity to work with the Danish electronica group The Woodheads for their song “Monday Go Ahead.” Shooting in a cold New Hampshire warehouse, in an intentionally “rather low-rent style,” Rocheleau sought to craft a “twisted little creep-fest…like a snuff film you inadvertently purchased in a box of unmarked VHS.” Moving, slow-motion shots, hypnotic dance, cold industrial locations, and nightmarish imagery combine with a shocking ending. “America can crush your spirit. You want to be joyful, but sometimes you just want to end it all.” A rap video for Oryn the Rebel’s “The Stick,” about an individual’s nocturnal quest for greater love, became the director’s third project. Set on the nighttime Boston cityscape, Rocheleau’s trademark moving camera, vibrant, powerful images, and shallow focus “…capture [the rapper’s] wandering spirit.” His latest video project is for “Election,” by local hard-rockers Bullethead. The overtly political song presented a new challenge for Rocheleau. “Politicians don’t care about us, and can’t save us.” This was Rocheleau’s first production shot in a studio. “I wanted a hardcore performance piece… really let them rock out and show their stuff. Utilizing green screen effects, Rocheleau creates a stark white performance space juxtaposed against the harsh color of war and politics. Rocheleau , in a short span of time, has established himself as a leading artist in the music video genre. His unique, often dark sensibility sets him apart. “The seventies are over; rock-n-roll all night ain’t gonna help us. There’s still a cold morning to face. There are musicians who feel this way too. I’d like to work with them.” Learn more about Rockwater Pictures at www.rockwaterpictures.blogspot.com/ or email Russell at rockwaterpictures@gmail.com.

Rolle, 24, beat out over 10,000 other competitors for this fabulous opportunity, a role she’s been preparing for ~ with the help of her family ~ her whole life. “Growing up, there were three girls in my family and we weren’t even allowed to wear make-up as kids,” Rolle remembers. “My dad didn’t want us thinking we needed to change ourselves. He always told me, ‘It doesn’t matter what’s on the outside. It’s only what’s on the inside that matters.’ I’ve lived with that message since I was eight years old.” Rolle embraces just about all aspects of the entertainment business. She’s still modeling, but also taking acting classes and is attending school for Sports Broadcasting in Atlanta, Georgia. “I really love the acting world,” she says. “You’re always discovering new aspects of yourself. But my goal is to become a sportscaster. Sports, broadcasting, traveling, meeting people ~ it truly makes me happy!” But despite dashing from classrooms to jobs, this excellent role model for young girls still loves coming home to the Worcester area and visiting the places near and dear to her heart. “I love visiting Worcester Academy, where I finished high school,” Rolle says. “I

Let’s face it. We’re mean to our hair. We really don’t give it the respect it deserves. We straighten it, curl it, and subject it to heat and a ton of product almost every day. pluggz Keep You Grounded

The Travalo By Steph Moore

Finally, a better way to carry our favorite perfume or cologne! Most scents come in heavy, expensive bottles that are risky to pack and travel with, but pouring perfume from a full-sized bottle into a travel-sized container is messy and usually results in lost product. The Travalo, a refillable atomizer bottle with an internal pump system, makes it easy to transfer your perfume ~ and at 3” long and only .5 ounces, it’s approved for carry-on luggage onboard flights.

By Steph Moore Many people describe a sense of well-being when they walk barefoot on grass, sand or earth. This “feel-good” sensation manifests differently in everyone, but it’s called being grounded. There is extensive research showing that walking barefoot on the ground enables our bodies to efficiently absorb earth’s abundant electrons. Science has also shown that we have too many free radicals floating around our bodies, and that they can cause discomfort, pain, inflammation, listlessness and all sorts of havoc. Electrons help neutralize free radicals and by doing so begin to heal us from the inside out. Fortunately, the earth has a plethora of electrons that it is more than willing to share with us. All we have to do is connect. That’s what pluggz do. The proprietary technology in every pair of pluggz has a custom carbon and rubber plug which acts as a conduit, allowing the electrons to flow into our bodies. Available for men (brown, black) and women (silver, gold, black), pluggz retail for $39.00 at pluggz.com.

Travalo Features It’s environmentally friendly/98% recyclable Depending on the model (listed below) you choose, it holds from 50 – 65 sprays of perfume. There’s a clear window so that you can gauge the level of perfume. The Travalo is lightweight, shatter-proof, and comes in an assortment of colors. Its spill-free internal refill system doesn’t use funnels or other parts and comes with a lifetime guarantee. The Travelo is perfect for keeping at work, for parties, concerts, dates (I keep mine in my tiny “night on the town” clutch and love it!), weekend getaways, gym bags, and extended vacations, so head to http:// us.travalo.com to find a retailer near you or to order online!

De Rigueur Makes Looking Great Easy! By Steph Moore

Sure, it’s summer right now and our minds are on bathing suits and hot, sunny days. But soon enough, the nights will start to cool down and we’ll need something a little more substantial ~ that one yummy “throw and go” piece that we won’t leave home without. Luckily, the new De Rigueur collection features beautiful, casual, gauzy knits that will easily take you from the heat of the day into the cool of the night. My fave? The Go To Pullover. It comes in two classic colors ~ light oatmeal and heather grey ~ and has a slim fit body (which instantly makes any sweater look warmer weather appropriate ~ if you put on something big and bulky that doesn’t huge your curves, it’s going to scream bundled up for winter) and elbow patch detail. It’s casual yet sophisticated so you can dress it up with a blazer and skinny jeans or dress it down on cool summer evening with your favorite shorts! The Go To Pullover retails for $110 and can be found at all Equinox Shops nationwide. The Beach Cardy is another must have when you’re going for a walk on the beach or have a last minute Friday night date! It’s lightweight and easy and is available in indigo blue and oatmeal brown. Throw it over a favorite camisole or your bikini and you’re good to go! The Beach Cardy retails for $98 and can be found at all Equinox Shops nationwide.
