Editors Corner Welcome to our Fall edition, the 2nd to last for the year. We’ve made some improvements to the A2Z Metalworker publications that I hope you will find beneficial. First, many of our advertisers recommended that we expand this publication to the states of Montana and Wyoming. Previously, we were focused on Colorado, Utah and Idaho. This issue, we’ve renamed this edition the A2Z Metalworker - Rocky Mountain edition! I am so delighted that this has given me the wonderful opportunity to interview very successful machine shops in these vast states. We’ve also increased our focus on Facebook and Linkedin, as we’ve endeavored to make the magazines completely available online. I am delighted to be able to share some very positive news about manufacturing in the United States! In a recently released study,The Boston Consulting Group(BCG) forecasts that within the next five years the United States is expected to experience a manufacturing renaissance as the wage gap with China shrinks and a number of states in the U.S. become some of the cheapest locations in the developed world. Here is some important data: • Wages throughout China are climbing at 15-20% per year because of the supply-and-demand imbalance for skilled labor. After adjustments are made for higher US worker productivity, BCG expects US and China net labor costs to converge around 2015. • A recent KPMG survey asked executives to list their top concerns. Labor concerns ranked below product quality and fluctuations in shipping rates and currency values. And 19% of the companies that responded to a survey by mfg.com said they had recently brought all or part of their manufacturing back to the United States. • US factories added 136,00 jobs last year - the first increase in manufacturing employment since 1997. The convergence of labor rates clearly bodes well for US manufacturing, but I believe that the manufacturing entities that will leap frog their competitors are those who continually invest in new equipment, software and tools. Increased automation not only lessens the impact of labor rates, but it ultimately results in products that are higher in quality, more consistently made to specification, and with higher likelihood of being delivered on-time. Manufacturers in developing nations cannot compete with US manufacturers who embrace the latest in manufacturing software, tools and processes. I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to interview some of the most progressive, innovative machine shops across the 11 states our publications cover! Manufacturing Industry Mourns Loss of Mr. Teruyuki Yamazaki It is with great sadness that Mazak Corporation announces the passing of Mr.Teruyuki (Terry)Yamazaki, chairman and CEO Mazak Corporation. Mr. Yamazaki was the son of Mr. Sadakichi Yamazaki, founder of Yamazaki Machinery, later Yamazaki Mazak Corporation, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of machine tools. Mr.Yamazaki also served as the deputy chairman of the Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association from 1987-2007. In 2001, Mr. Yamazaki passed the role of president on to his son, Mr. Tomohisa Yamazaki, and assumed the role of chairman of the company. Mr.Yamazaki continued to contribute to company strategy and guidance until his death on September 15, 2011. Throughout his lifetime, Mr.Yamazaki was an avid collector of fine art. Flexjet starts sales of new Learjet 85 Fractional ownership company Flexjet has kicked off its sales program to sell Bombardier Aerospace’s new Learjet 85 business jets. Flexjet, a division of Bombardier, is the company’s launch customer for the carbon composite airplane, Bombardier’s largest Learjet to date. Bombardier’s Learjet plant in Wichita will be responsible for final assembly, interior completion, paint and delivery of the airplane. The program will support 600 jobs at the plant. Bombardier launched the Learjet 85 program in October 2007.The company is on schedule to deliver the first plane to Flexjet in late 2013. Flexjet has seven Learjet 85s on order. They will be delivered through 2014.

DOE Gives Award To 16 Advanced CCS Projects Platts reports the Department of Energy awarded $41 million recently to 16 projects aimed to develop advanced carbon capture and sequestration technology. The grants “will be handed out over three years to projects that are able to capture at least 90% of power-plant CO2 emissions, while at the same time keeping electricity cost increases below 35%.” Current technology “uses 20% to 30% of the power produced by the plant, and can raise electricity prices by as much as 85%.” Energy Secretary Steven Chu said of the funds, “Charting a path toward clean coal is essential to achieving our goals of providing clean energy, creating American jobs, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” Platts points out that the announcement comes as many private projects are being scaled down or eliminated.

Lockheed Jet May Win Japan Deal Lockheed Martin Corp. is counting on stealth technology to beat Boeing Co.and Eurofighter GmbH in a Japanese fighter contest that may be worth more than $4 billion. Craig Caffrey, a London-based analyst at IHS Jane’s DS Forecast, which advises defense suppliers. That may give the plane an edge as Japan previously tried to buy stealth fighters that can be used for spying as well as combat. Japan will accept bids this month to supply about 40 fighters as it bolsters air defenses to counter military developments in China and North Korea. The contest comes as Lockheed sheds jobs because of projected cuts in U.S. defense spending, which may include a reduction in F-35 orders, and after the Bethesda, Maryland-based company missed out on an $11 billion Indian order for fighters this year.

US Trade Deficit Narrowed In July Bloomberg News reports, “The US trade deficit narrowed more than forecast in July as exports climbed to a record, offering a bright spot for an economy at risk of a bigger slowdown. Exec Jets’ Edwards Charts Course for Embraer Ernest Edwards, the new president of Embraer’s Executive Jets Division, took the helm in May after predecessor Luis Carlos Affonso was assigned to head New Programs. Edwards has been at his post for only a few months, but he is not new to Embraer, and has formed some firm ideas of where the company’s future lies. Here is one area of focus:The Brazilian plane maker’s new midsize Legacy 500 and the midlight 450 that is hard on its big brother’s heels will take full fly-by-wire capability into a new – and much lower – price and weight range. That is in keeping with a broader strategy of entering all market categories with a product that is bigger, roomier, faster, and equipped with more technology, yet value priced. Colleagues say Edwards has been keeping up a brisk pace, traveling heavily and learning the company’s many facets of global operations, yet all the while steering the firm according to a detailed plan, remaining mindful of concerns regarding fuel costs and emissions. There is a gate guard Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante on a pylon in front of its San Jose dos Campos headquarters, and the company continues to operate one of its own EMB 120 Brasilias as a daily corporate shuttle, so there are plenty of visible reminders of Embraer’s turboprop roots. But regardless of fuel and emissions concerns, in the executive market at least, the company will stick to jets, as the division’s name implies. As for turboprops, “Not at the moment,” Edwards said during a brief interview with Aviation Week. “Embraer doesn’t have plans to enter the turboprop business.” Nor will Embraer dabble in the fractional operations that rivals Cessna and Bombardier have employed to put part of their production output to work. Edwards evinces much more interest in looking ahead than in looking back – or, for that matter, in studying what his competitors are doing. Edwards recalls the beginnings of the new division and calling former colleagues to assess interest in the company’s new venture. “Embraer, who are they?” was the response at the time, he recalls. “Brazil, what do they know about building corporate jets. The situation has completely reversed now in the last five or five and a half years.” The company’s rapid rise now has everyone’s full attention, he says. The company launched its Executive Jets Division with a mission statement that said, in part, “To become a major player in the Business Aviation Market by 2015,” which Embraer has accomplished despite the market’s virtual collapse in 2009. According to GAMA figures for OEM unit deliveries as presented by Embraer, the company’s share has risen from 2.7% in 2005 to 14% in 2009 and 19% last year. It stakes its claim as the fastest growing business jet maker, and Edwards says he intends to continue the trend. “The challenge now is to maintain what you have and maybe grow it,” he says. The goal is to increase efficiency and safety in the deck environment, and reduce the need for special procedures and restrictions as increasing numbers of unmanned air systems are integrated into the fleet, said Marc Steinberg, an ONR program officer. “We are trying to understand how we can most effectively do future deck operations with manned and unmanned aircraft as we increase the numbers and level of autonomy and intelligence of the unmanned systems,” Steinberg said. The demonstration attempted to show how a person can manage, in this case 10 aircraft, where the operator encountered failures, ranging from the simple to the complex. The scenarios included catapult failures during launch operations and aircraft fuel and hydraulic leaks. More complex scenarios staged one aircraft fuel leak with a request for additional aircraft while there were conflicting priorities on the deck.

ONR-Funded Researchers Examine New Approaches For Future Manned/Unmanned Aircraft Operations An Office of Naval Research (ONR)-sponsored effort to examine how aircraft carrier flight deck crews will manage manned and unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), completed a successful live demonstration, ONR announced recently. The Deck operations Course of Action Planner (DCAP) demonstration was performed at the Humans and Automation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). DCAP is a software tool designed to aid in planning on aircraft carrier flight decks--a congested and often times chaotic environment that not only includes a variety of aircraft but also ground equipment and personnel. The science and technology effort will provide flight deck personnel with automated planning tools, enhanced information displays, and new user interface approaches that make it much easier to A2Z METALWORKER

Engineers used small, remote-controlled ground vehicles to simulate aircraft on a scaled model of a carrier deck. Other parts of the lab represented a mission area and a Marshal stack area that the vehicles moved through in the course of their simulated missions. The planning device also displays priorities, schedule information, and details on aircraft fuel level and mechanical status as well as catapult and landing strip usage.This data aids personnel in the decision-making process, according to information from MIT’s Humans and Automation Laboratory. Additionally, it enables the decision maker to interact with the included planning algorithm. This planning system is done on-demand, allowing crews to choose when to initiate a change in schedule and giving them a choice of different options.

GE Preps 1st Production H80 Engine For Thrush According to both Thrush Aircraft and GE Aviation, last month was an important one in the progress of the latter’s H80 turboprop engine. That’s when GE delivered the first fully production compliant model for installation on the Thrush 510G agplane. When it receives its FAA certification, expected before year end, the 510G will become the first new-build aircraft to be powered by the engine – a reworked power plant aimed directly at the market dominated for decades by the PT6, produced by GE Aviation’s arch rival, Pratt & Whitney. Jody Bays,Thrush Aircraft’s vice president of Product Support and Development, says that when compared to the 750 shp PT6-powered 510P, the 800 shp GE version is 250 lb lighter, 10 mph faster, has better hot and high performance, and gets off the ground and climbs out faster. Thrush is pricing both versions of the 510 at $852,635. The company plans to increase production of all its models from 36 aircraft this year to 48 in 2012. It hopes to deliver four Thrush 510Gs this year. The H80 is derived from the M601, manufactured by Walter Engines, a company GE acquired in 2008. Since then GE has invested considerably in its Czech facilities and reworked the engine with GE-developed three-dimensional aerodynamics and more advanced materials. The GE engine has also been selected to power the Czech-built Let 410, whose first flight should occur in September, and a new Russian utility twin to be built by Rysachok. A2Z METALWORKER

Senate Passes Patent Bill The Washington Post reports, “After six years of squabbling over how to fix the country’s patent system, the Senate passed a bill touted by lawmakers as important for creating jobs and encouraging innovation.” The AP reports, “The first major change in patent law in six decades is aimed at streamlining the patent process, reducing costly legal battles and giving the US Patent and Trademark Office the money it needs to process patent applications in a timely fashion.” The legislation “would switch the United States from the ‘first-toinvent’ system to the ‘first-inventorto-file’ system for patent applications. That change would put the US in line with other industrialized countries.” The measure “would ensure that the patent office has the money to expedite the application process. It now takes an average of three years to get a patent approved.The agency has a backlog of 1.2 million pending patents.”

Two great precision machining companies in one location, based in Louviers, Colorado. One, a very well known entity called Superior Metal Products, was established nearly 40 years ago and Mike Pollmiller, a long term employee of the company, purchased it outright nearly 15 years ago. The second company, only 3 and a half years new, is called Focused on Machining, and it is owned by Mike’s younger brother Rich Pollmiller.The two companies occupy 24,000 square foot across the two buildings, which are side by side. About Superior Metal Products Mike Pollmiller could be considered a rocket scientist. Well, at the very least, he is a rocket scientist machinist. A substantial part of Superior Metal Products’ business is manufacturing parts and assemblies for rockets and interceptor missiles used by a number of nations throughout the world. Their customers in this industry segment include Lockheed Martin and United Launch Alliance, and they are Tier 1 suppliers to these giants. The company, ISO certified more than 10 years ago, long before most machine shops thought about taking this critical step, manufactures parts as small as 1/16” to as large as 80”. “While we are renown for our rocket and missile parts”, Mike said, “Some of our first customers included Coors Brewing Company, and a number of commercial, Automotive, Nuclear and Department of Energy businesses.We are still a supplier to many of the customers who helped Superior Metal to launch our business.” Tim Traylor, Sales Manager of Triad Machine Tool Company, says, “Mike makes some of the most complex, tight toleranced parts that I have ever seen.” And customers keep coming to him because of his quality and pricing -- he is considered by the largest rocket manufacturing companies an A+ student. “Our business is almost exclusively devoted to prototype and short run work”, Mike said. “Our A2Z METALWORKER

lots run from 1 to 50 parts, and we work extensively with the engineering teams at our customers in developing the products.” Superior Metal Products offers in-house capabilities in machining, grinding (ID/OD, Surface), honing, and manufacturing of complete subassemblies. About Focused On Machining Rich says, “I learned from the best, my brother Mike, while I worked for him at Superior Metal Products over a period of 8 years. I left to become a general manager running a colleague’s business, and that too taught me much about running a company. When I wanted to get back into manufacturing, I wanted to work with Mike, but under my own company.” Hence, Focused on Machining was formed just 3 and a half years ago. Rich says, “Focused on Machining serves a very different clientele than Superior Metal Products does. Our customers are heavily in the commercial industry, and we make parts in the thousands. We do much of the same processes that Superior Metal Products does, including machining, grinding, honing, but we are also specialized in welding and fabrication.” The company’s parts typically range from 1/8” to 40”. There are many advantages to working with Superior Metal Products and Focused on Machining. For one, they are expert machinists who are willing to machine difficult parts. Additionally, you get efficiencies that only two companies working together can provide. Rich says, “We share in delivery, accounting, shipping and receiving, and other functions.” Mike adds, “When I get a request for a job that is higher in volume, I outsource it to Rich. In fact, Focused on Machining is the only machine shop I use for outsourcing, because I know the quality of end product I will get.” About the Companies’ Equipment Superior Metal Products has long been a Mori Seiki shop. Mike says, “From the time I started working here as an employee, our management team purchased only Mori Seiki’s and only from Triad Machine Tool Company of Wheat Ridge, CO. When I purchased the company, I continued to buy Mori Seiki machines from Triad. For me, the biggest thing is dependability. The uptime on the Mori Seiki’s is phenomenal - for a job shop this is huge. You can’t have your machines go down.” Today Superior Metal Products has 12 Mori Seiki CNC machines, including 4 lathes and 8 mills, and Mike says, they just don’t go down. When Mike made the decision over a year ago to upgrade his capabilities with a 5 axis machine, he did substantial research. “We consider Triad a partner of ours, but we needed the best 5 axis machine available on the market, and we needed it with a small footprint. We seriously evaluated machines from a number of suppliers. In the end, Triad had the best product in its DMG DMU 70. (The DMG line of machine tool products is part of DMG/Mori Seiki USA, since the two companies merged operations in the United States over a year ago.) The large

machining capacity to floor space ratio is outstanding, and it will reduce many of the parts we build from 8 operations down to 2.” In keeping with its reputation for superior maintenance and support, Triad recently hired an applications engineer to support the company’s 5 axis line of machine tools. The new DMU 70 design is based on the successful DMU 50 Universal Milling Machine, and combines the latest technology with a new machine size. Spindle speeds up to 18,000 rpm, a Heidenhain iTNC 530 5 axis simultaneous control and an optional tool magazine with 60 pockets and coolant through the spindle are features that guarantee the efficient production of highly complex parts. The unique swivel rotary table is integrated into the machine base and is very rigid due to its large flange diameter, which allows a significant increase in dynamic speed, precision and surface quality. Rich admits that he purchased a few used machines when he opened for business. “I hope never to buy used again”, he said. Business is going well, and Rich doesn’t have to buy used now. His latest purchase is a Mori Seiki NHX4000 horizontal machining center, purchased, of course from Triad Machine Tool Company. The NHX4000 is ideal for machining workpieces of up to 24.8 inches by 35.4 inches and is equipped with rapid feed rates of 2,362 IPM, a 12,000 RPM spindle and a Full 4th axis utilizing Direct Drive Motor technology. Rich knows from experience that the Mori Seiki he purchased was the right decision, and the support he will receive from Triad will be second to none. Amid controversy over the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, Montana officials are pushing hard to make the pipeline a reality. Gov. “A Chinese national company is interested in developing a 10,000to 30,000-acre technology zone for industry, retail centers and homes south of the Boise Airport. Officials of the China National Machinery Industry Corp. have broached the idea — based on a concept popular in China today — to city and state leaders. They are also interested in helping build and finance a fertilizer plant near American Falls, an idea company officials returned to Idaho this month to pursue. This ambitious, long-term proposal would start with a manufacturing and warehouse zone tied to the airport, and could signify a shift in the economic relationship between the two superpowers — a relationship once defined by U.S. companies like the J.R. Simplot Co., Hewlett-Packard and Morrison-Knudsen that would head to China to build and develop. “I think China’s coming over here shows they are willing to collaborate on the reinvigoration of the American industrial base,” said Jeff Don, CEO of Eagle-based C3, which is acting as an Idaho representative for the Chinese company, called Sinomach for short. Sinomach is just one of an increasing number of companies and investors showing interest in Idaho. Hoku Materials Inc., a subsidiary of a Chinese energy firm, already has 500 people building its $400 million plant to make polysilicon for solar panels in Pocatello. It expects to begin production in 2011, employing 250 people, said Scott Paul, Hoku’s president and CEO.” I think this story illustrates several important economic points. It helps expose the type of trade lunacy/nitwitery advocated by mercantilist protectionists like Ian Fletcher, who claims here that “Our trade deficit helps Guangdong, Seoul,Yokohama, even Munich – but not Gary, Indiana, Fontana, California, and the other badlands of America’s industrial decline.” Try telling that to the citizens and workers in Idaho, who are benefiting from jobs and investment as a direct result of our trade deficit with China. It helps illustrate a point made by Don Boudreaux, who reminds us that another name for the “U.S. trade deficit” is “U.S. capital-account surplus” – that is, inflows of investment funds to the U.S. that supply financing for the creation or expansion of U.S. companies, and help create or support jobs in America. The $273 billion “trade deficit” with China in 2010 was exactly offset by a $273 billion capital inflow, and $400 million of that capital financed the construction of a solar panel factory in Pocatello, Idaho, employing 500 workers for the construction and another 250 workers this year when production starts. Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 NASA Launching Twin Moon Probes to Measure Gravity Four decades after landing men on the moon, NASA is returning to Earth’s orbiting companion, this time with a set of robotic twins that will measure lunar gravity while chasing one another in circles. By creating the most precise lunar gravity map ever, scientists hope to figure out what’s beneath the lunar surface, all the way to the core. The orbiting probes also will help pinpoint the best landing sites for future explorers, whether human or mechanical. Near-identical twins Grail-A and Grail-B — short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory — are due to blast off aboard an unmanned rocket. Although launched together, the two washing machine-size spacecraft will separate an hour into the flight and travel independently to the moon. It will be a long, roundabout trip — three to four months — because of the small Delta II rocket used to boost the spacecraft. NASA’s Apollo astronauts used the mighty Saturn V rocket, which covered the approximately 240,000 miles to the moon in a mere three days. NASA’s Grail twins will travel more than 2 million miles to get to the moon under this slower but more economical plan.The mission, from start to finish, costs $496 million.The moon’s appeal is universal. Since the Space Age began in 1957, 109 missions have targeted the moon, 12 men have walked its surface during six landings, and 842 pounds of rock and soil have been brought back to Earth and are still being analyzed.Three spacecraft currently are orbiting the moon and making science observations. A plan to return astronauts to the moon was nixed in favor of an asteroid and Mars. Scientists still don’t know everything about the moon. For nearly three months, the spacecraft will chase one another around the moon, meticulously flying in formation.The distance between the two probes will range from 40 miles to 140 miles. Scientists will be able to measure even the slightest variations in the gap between orbiting Grail-A and Grail-B — every single second.These subtle changes will indicate shifting masses below or at the lunar surface: mountains in some places, enormous lava tubes and craters in others.

Boeing gets $1.1-billion Air Force satellite contract In a major boost to its sprawling satellite-making operation in El Segundo, Boeing Co. announced that it won a $1.1-billion U.S. Air Force award that will preserve high-paying engineering jobs and bolster smaller firms that supply parts for the massive satellites. The deal was the fourth big-money satellite contract for Boeing in two years — a reversal of fortunes from the dog days of the late 1990s — and it keeps the production line humming at a time when the state is facing a 12% unemployment rate. Boeing has about 5,500 employees at its million-square-foot facility near Los Angeles International Airport. Whenever a major contract is signed, the company makes an announcement over the public address system. “Our floor erupted in cheers,” said Mark Spiwak, Boeing’s director for the Wideband Global Satcom program. “There’s a tremendous amount of pride associated with this program.” The Wideband Global Satcom satellites form the Pentagon’s highest-capacity communications system. The massive satellites are about the size of a school bus, take more than four years to make and provide the military with high-definition video, radio communications and data services. Each 13,000-pound spacecraft is built on the same design as the satellites used by DirecTV and XM Radio. were going to work together and that they needed to start a real business and work their dream.We will call this era, “TheWarehouse Days”. The Brothers leased an 1800 square foot warehouse to start their business and with very little money to live on, sacrificed and moved into the office portion of the Spartan style warehouse. After designing and building a gravity-powered shower, they were content they had what they needed to live and work their business. The official start to Kustom Koncepts came in August of 2005 through a major contract they won while Branden was working as a mechanical engineer at a major drilling firm. He was tasked with out sourcing an intricate drilling rig mat to a supplier closer than the current Canadian Supplier. After exhausting all options in Wyoming he and Cameron looked the job over and asked to quote the work. Cameron spent weeks lining up material, equipment, and tools that would help them win the order and perform to the stringent delivery (12-15-05) required by the company. $795M in Hawkeye contracts for Northrop The U.S. Navy has given Northrop Grumman $795 million worth of awards for E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft, the company announced. Under a sole source, firm-fixed price $795 million contract, Northrop will manufacture and deliver five low-rate initial production Lot 3, E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft to the Navy. Included are long-lead materials for five LRIP, Lot 4, E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes. Grounding Ends for Remaining U.S. F-35s The production version of the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet has been cleared to fly, according to manufacturer Lockheed Martin. The entire Joint Strike Fighter fleet was grounded by the F-35 program office on Aug. 2 after one jet suffered a malfunction of a control valve in its Honeywell-built integrated power package. The 12 instrumented test aircraft were cleared to fly by the F-35 program office on Aug. 18. Now the half-dozen or so production jets can take to the air. “Last month, F-35 production jets were authorized to fly again,” Lockheed spokesman Mike Rein said. “They are now flying the same profiles they were prior to the precautionary suspension of operations. This includes acceptance flights at Fort Worth, [Texas], and ferry flights to Eglin.” Two production aircraft have already been delivered to Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., where the U.S. Air Force’s first training squadron is standing up. The stealth fighter is assembled at a Lockheed plant in Fort Worth.

Manufacturers Campaign Against Deeper Cuts In US Defense Spending Bloomberg News reports that the Aerospace Industries Association, “which represents manufacturers such as Boeing Co., United Technologies Corp. and Lockheed Martin Corp, has launched a campaign to stave off cuts in the national security budget as a special congressional committee seeks to find $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction throughout the federal government.” The AP reports the AIA “and top executives from companies such as Boeing and Pratt & Whitney said reductions beyond the 10year, $350 billion cut in this summer’s debt accord would have a devastating impact on a defense industry that Marion C. Blakey, the association’s president, described as ‘fragile.’” The AIA said, “American leadership in aerospace and defense is being threatened by forces in Congress and the” Obama administration. “The association and company executives said the industry alone is responsible for more than 1 million jobs and significant cuts could lead to widespread layoffs that would push the unemployment rate above 9.1 percent.”

Volatility in the stock market may result in a short period of slower sales for some business jet manufacturers but could lead to stronger demand down the road when a true recovery takes hold, says aviation consultant Brian Foley. The recent wild swings in the stock market and the overall economic uncertainty is a short-term blip to the business jet industry and not a precursor to another industry free fall, aviation analysts say. That volatility may result in a short period of slower sales for some business jet manufacturers, said Brian Foley, aviation consultant with Brian Foley Associates. But it also could lead to stronger demand down the road, he said.“That means when the true recovery does take hold, it will have much more momentum,” Foley said. “There’s just so much pent-up demand out there from aircraft sales to maintenance services that people have been putting off.”

Manufacturers and their order books are stronger today than they were three years ago when the market plunged during the recession and buyers canceled droves of orders. Their order books are of a higher caliber than they were before the downturn, Foley said. Orders on the books are from buyers who have the balance sheets to support them, who have been heavily scrutinized by lenders and have made meaningful down payments on aircraft, Foley said. “The weak players canceled their orders long ago,” he said.

Aircraft manufacturers have also changed in the past three years, Foley said.They’ve been driving out costs, reducing waste and adding productivity and efficiencies. “They’re basically cocked and loaded so when the market does recover, those airplanes are going to be built for a whole lot less,” Foley said. “They’re going to be stronger companies than they were in the past.” Teal Group analyst Richard Aboulafia said he still predicts a conservative recovery in the business jet market next year. Despite the violent market swings, “corporate profits haven’t been impacted,” Aboulafia said. And nothing has disrupted two key indicators of business jet demand — availability of the business jet fleet that’s up for sale and fleet utilization, he said. Wayne Plucker, senior industry analyst with Frost & Sullivan’s Aerospace and Defense Group, called the market reaction an annoyance rather than a long-term problem — as long as it doesn’t become a tipping point for the economy. “The truth is that all the folks who would buy business jets were starting to return to decent profitability,” Plucker said. “Now their profitability hasn’t changed... but they’re probably going to hold their

FedEx to Weigh Boeing, Airbus Wide-Body Order to Renew Delivery Fleet

Secondhand 767 passenger models may be part of a purchase, allowing Memphis, Tennessee-based FedEx to convert the planes to fly cargo, two people said.The likely value of a deal may be several billion dollars, based on list prices of $167.7 million for a new 767-300 freighter and $203.6 million for an A330-200 freighter, and the discounts customers receive. A freighter order would be a boost for either planemaker. Boeing is seeking sales to keep its 767 assembly line busy before the company starts building U.S. Air Force tankers based on the model, and Airbus has secured only 57 A330 freighter orders since committing to the cargo version in 2007. Twin-engine jets like the 767 or A330 would help FedEx cut fuel costs, because its large planes include three-engine DC-10s and MD11s from Chicago-based Boeing. Some of the DC-10s are more than 30 years old, according

FedEx said then that it was canceling an order for 10 Airbus A380 freighters after “significant delays” on the cargo version of the superjumbo jet, which never went into production. While Boeing has built more than 1,000 767s since the plane entered service in 1982, the model has lost favor with airlines as longtime customers focus on the new 787 Dreamliner, the plastic-composite jet that promises greater fuel efficiency.The backlog of 767s was 52 through July, according to the company, compared with 348 for the A330. With Boeing assembling 767s at a rate of about two planes each month, the current orders would amount to only about two years of production for the commercial variant of the plane. The 767-300 freighter can carry more than 59 tons (53,500 kilograms) of cargo and has a maximum range of about 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers), according to Boeing’s website. An A330 freighter can fly as much as 70 tons of cargo for almost 3,700 miles, according to Martin Fendt, an Airbus spokesman.

According to Solarbuzz, the number of new, industrial-scale solar projects being planned has increased to 24 gigawatts of solar capacity, up from 17 gigawatts just two months ago. This growth has occurred as the price of solar panels has plunged 25 percent since the beginning of the year, a trend that analysts say is likely to continue. And while the market has crippled some manufacturers who have unable to keep pace — including three major U.S. companies that were forced to file for bankruptcy in recent weeks — it has made solar projects more attractive to many consumers, businesses, and utilities. Citing the latest market data, Solarbuzz identified 1,865 nonresidential projects that are either installed, being installed, or in development since Jan. 1, 2010. “Utility expectations for improved installed pricing measured either in per watt peak or kilowatt hour have vastly increased over the past quarter,” said Craig Stevens, president of Solarbuzz.

United States: DOE Backs Solar Projects with Nearly $500 Million in Loan Guarantees The Department of Energy (DOE) has made back to back announcements that combined will support the solar sector with loan guarantees that total nearly $500 million. Last month, the Department awarded a partial guarantee of a $344 million loan for what is expected to be the nation’s largest residential rooftop solar project. Over the next five years, SolarCity Corporation will use the funds to install and operate up to 160,000 rooftop solar installations on an estimated 124 U.S. military bases. The project, dubbed SolarStrong, is already underway in Hawaii where SolarCity is installing a 4 MW solar system at Hickman Air Force base. When complete, SolarStrong is expected to create 371 MW of renewable energy. SolarCity will sell the power its systems produce to the Department of Defense (DOD) through long term power purchase agreements (PPA). The DOD, which is the country’s largest consumer of electricity, is moving rapidly towards its goal to source 25 percent of its energy’s from renewables by 2025. Last month, it selected three companies for a $500 million multiple award contract for the purchase of energy from solar generating systems installed on Naval properties in Hawaii. Solar wafer developer 1336 Technologies Inc. will move forward with plans to build a multicrystalline wafer manufacturing facility after recent news that the DOE finalized $150 million loan guarantee to support the project.The facility will be capable of producing 1,000 megawatts (MW) of silicon-based wafers annually.The facility will employ the company’s Direct A2Z METALWORKER

The Direct Wafer technology initially received a $4 million award from the DOE through its Advanced Research Project Agency - Energy (ARPA-E). In March, led by an investment from GE Energy Financial Services, 1336 closed its series B funding round with $26.4 million. This loan guarantee furthers the DOE’s investment in solar projects. The new funds will support 69 solar technology development projects spanning 49 states.

Abengoa Closes $1.2 Billion Financing for the Mojave Solar Project and Starts Construction Abengoa, a company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, announced that it has finalized a $1.2 billion loan guarantee with the Department of Energy to build the Mojave Solar Project. This concentrating solar power (CSP) plant will use advanced proprietary parabolic trough technology that will increase the plant’s efficiency and lower the total cost. With a total investment of approximately $1.6 billion, the 280 MW Mojave Solar Project will create more than 900 construction and permanent operations jobs and over a thousand direct and indirect service and manufacturing jobs throughout the supply chain that will span the country. The Mojave Solar Project demonstrates America’s commitment to build an Americanmade solar industry which will provide energy independence, much-needed jobs, and economic development in the currently weak manufacturing sector. The Department of Energy (DOE) issued the loan guarantee to support this project. Abengoa signed a power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric to buy the energy produced by the Mojave Solar Project for a period of 25 years.

Mitsubishi to Introduce 2D, 3D, and Hybrid Lasers and new Press Brake Mitsubishi is making Fabtech a showstopper – unveiling the new eX, Mitsubishi’s most productive and efficient 2D laser machine ever.
