EDITORIAL

The acquisition position Over the last few months we have seen two security divisions of household names be acquired. What does this mean for the industry and how does it reflect on the strength of the market? n October 2014 it was announced that Vanderbilt Industries had acquired the business Security Products from Siemens and then at the end of November it was revealed that the purchase of Samsung Techwin by the Hanwha Group would be completed in 2015. Whether these came as total, out of the blue, shocks to the industry or not it goes to show that the security industry is still seen as an attractive investment for some companies while perhaps others are ready to move out of it to concentrate on other areas if the right offer comes along. Both of the companies taking over the established manufacturers said that it would be business as usual at each of the organisations and this is likely to be the case, at least for the time being. Customers of both Siemens SP and Samsung Techwin will likely see no instant change because one of the reasons why established companies are acquired is for their market share including a database of existing clients, therefore there is no reason why immediate changes to operating practices will happen. It will be interesting to see what changes are made concerning the branding of the new companies and how these sit with customers. In the case of the Vanderbilt purchase, the name ‘Siemens’ will not be transferring with the sale so the company will be known as Vanderbilt International from Day One; although the individual brands of Bewator, Cotag etc will continue to be used. As yet we have not heard about the naming of the new Samsung Techwin business going forward. Takeovers are always tricky times for the employees of acquired companies and as both of these cases show, even household names can get taken over. Staff now find themselves going from what was probably perceived as a safe position at a global innovator to being an extension of a company that they had never heard of prior to the deal going public. Again both Vanderbilt and Hanwha have stated that no changes are planned. But that is the usual message.... So what does the purchase of two of the largest operators in the market mean for the industry? Well, as already mentioned, it means that this is still an attractive industry sector for businesses and with very large companies buying up established manufacturers, both with strong European sales, then it shows that the UK and its neighbours have customers that Hanwha (South Korea) and Vanderbilt (US) value and want to reach as quickly as possible. Much in the same way we have seen CCTV companies buying up access control companies; it is easier to buy the expertise rather than try and build it up. Given this thinking, the job security for UK staff should be fairly strong. The acquisitions also mean that both companies will see some investment in terms of marketing and R&D from their new owners, which should be good news for customers and partners. Nothing is certain in business however so we, and the current UK staff, await the developments of 2015.

Jong Wan Lim, Managing Director of the Security Solution for Samsung Techwin Europe said following the announcement: “Customers can be assured that it is ‘business as usual’ and that there will be absolutely no disruption to the supply of products or to the normal high levels of pre and post sales support that customers have come to expect from Samsung Techwin.” The transaction is expected to be completed during the first half of 2015, subject to approval from antitrust regulatory authorities in relevant jurisdictions. Founded in 1952 Hanwha Group is involved in a range of businesses spanning manufacturing, construction, finance, services, and leisure industries. The Group’s has 52 domestic and 90 overseas affiliates and in 2013 achieved a total revenue of USD 35.13 billion, whilst its assets were valued at approximately USD117.4 billion.

Housing Group tender success Amthal Fire & Security has secured the tender for Notting Hill Housing Group to provide electronic security solutions and maintenance across the social enterprise’s three office locations in London. Across the multiple locations Amthal Fire & Security has developed an electronic security solution, implementing intruder alarms, CCTV, access control and automated door systems as and where required. Following the first tender issued from the Housing Group, Amthal Fire & Security is now also responsible for security maintenance across the three sites. Jamie Allam, Commercial Director of Amthal Fire & Security added: “At the heart of social enterprise is the need to create homes and communities in which residents want to live. But equally important is for staff at organisations expected to deliver on such Government objectives to feel safe and secure at their workplace.”

Domestic burglary statistics show trends MCM Security has designed an infographic which looks at the statistics surrounding domestic burglary across the world. Covering topics such as the demographic of the average burglar and the most commonly stolen items the graphic also covers the rates of crime across the continent and breaks each country down to give an overall picture of how the trends vary. Commenting on the findings Kevin Maguire of MCM Security said: “The rate of domestic burglaries has been decreasing in Europe since 2002 and while one burglary a minute still occurs in the UK, this is significantly less than in the United States where four burglaries occur every minute.” In 2003 in the UK and Wales, there were 402,345 domestic burglaries according to Eurostat police recorded crimes. A decade later in 2012, that figure had decreased to 227,280, in line with the decreases seen in the rest of Europe. “MCM Security is based in Ireland which tells a different story, Said Kevin. “According to Eurostat, the police recorded figure for domestic burglary in Ireland in 2003 was 16,436 and while this is significantly less that the UK and Wales, what has been found a decade later in 2012 is that domestic burglary in Ireland has actually increased to 27, 837 which is at odds with the European decrease overall.” The infographic can be viewed via the QR code.

Lowest price security perils revealed The Confederation of European Security Services (CoESS) and UNI Europa have published an updated edition of their “Best Value Manual” with the support of the European Commission. The manual aims to assist contracting authorities when selecting a private security provider. By identifying key do’s and don’ts, those using this manual will be able to combine quality with a favourable price, rather than just settling for the lowest price bidder. “Choosing security services based on quality and not just price may sound obvious but it is not always the case as an increasing number of security services provided to public and private authorities are awarded solely on costs. This undermines all efforts to improve the quality of the services being provided. Choosing quality means reinforcing citizen’s trust in our services and our industry at large” said Marc Pissens, President of CoESS. The manual, drafted by CoESS and UNI Europa, is an update of the 1999 version and is available via the QR code above.

Six figure R&D funding award for AMG AMG, the British manufacturer of CCTV transmission solutions and Megapixel cameras, has announced that it has been awarded a six figure grant for enhanced Research and Development, as it continues its growth path into new industry sectors. The grant has been awarded by the LEP programme, which aims to lever £12m in private sector investment and create 500 jobs and apprenticeships by March 2018. Outside of AMG Systems, businesses that have received grant approval so far, totalling £ 1.9m, are GE Precision Engineering, Ecospeed Marine and Cosworth. Founder and MD of AMG Systems Alan Hayes said: “I am incredibly proud that we have been given this grant. The grant is incredibly significant for us as a business. AMG has spent the past few years self-funding a sizeable R&D programme. In 2013, this resulted in us bringing to market a series of Multi-Service Ethernet Switches affectionately known as the ‘AMG Wonderbox’. We sell into strategically import projects which need 15 year + support. In order to do this, it is imperative to have the expertise in house. It is also important for the country to have this expertise in the UK. We often work with very sensitive security projects – often of Critical National Importance – where the customers understand, and appreciate, that the networks products do not contain untoward software which could be a threat.” The joint LEP initiative to support businesses in the High Performance Technologies (HPT) sector is formed by NEP (Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership) and SEMLEP (South East Midlands Enterprise Partnership).

An advantage of modern intruder panels is their hybrid capability. If you have a problematic cable route to a hardwired device, you can substitute it for a wireless device with no additional cost to the customer. Peter Granville, the owner of Broadsword Security If we were to have a fire, the impact could be extensive. If any items, artefacts or buildings were damaged, they would be incredibly difficult or impossible to replace. Once they are gone, they are gone forever. Bob Bantock, the Operational Risk Business Partner specialising in fire solutions for the National Trust It is important to present confirmed communication failures intelligently. Consumers cannot resolve or act upon an IP or GPRS network outage and only want to know when connectivity from their system to the ARC/RVRC has failed. They also quite often do their research online so are more informed. Elizabeth Rivera, Director of Frank Alarms A large cross section of small commercial and retail businesses would not be able to continue trading after a significant fire. Brett Ennals, Managing Director at Cento Group & Fire and Security Jobs IFSEC International is an opportunity to keep pace with the latest products and technologies on the market. Staying ahead of the curve in this fast moving industry is crucial to standing out in a competitive market place. Gerry Dunphy, Event Director - Security and Fire, for IFSEC International The BSIA actively supports the need for a common framework of standards as opposed to individual Codes of Practice and organisational documents, which may only serve a select or specific market sector. James Kelly, Chief Executive of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) For many retailers a key focus has been to source a cost effective security solution which maintains a high level of security. Remote servicing capabilities replace the number of compulsory physical site visits saving valuable time and resource. CCTV cloud crime partners Cloudview is partnering with Facewatch to upload and share CCTV video evidence using any device with a browser

As a result of the new collaboration with Facewatch businesses will be able to upload captured video straight into the intelligence sharing and crime reporting system 12

loudview has announced that it is partnering with Facewatch the crime reporting and intelligence sharing platform used both by police forces and businesses across the UK. As a result those businesses will be able to upload footage captured by any analogue or IP CCTV system ready for sharing with other Facewatch subscribers and to provide evidence to associated police online crime reporting systems. Cloudview enables footage from any CCTV system to be stored in the cloud without impacting on local recording and monitoring arrangements. To achieve this a small Visual Network Adapter (VNA) attaches to each camera, connecting it to the Internet for remote video capture and management via the Cloudview service. Footage is encrypted and stored on secure Cloudview servers where it can be viewed from any device with a Web browser and Internet access. As a result of the new collaboration with Facewatch businesses will be able to upload captured video straight into the Facewatch intelligence sharing and crime reporting system, simply by clicking a button alongside the relevant Cloudview recording. According to James Wickes, Cloudview CEO, the key advantages of Cloudview are its ability to work with any CCTV camera setup and make footage available via the cloud. “Add Cloudview to a CCTV system and there’s no need to trawl through piles of DVDs or, in some cases, even VHS video tapes for the right recordings” he explains, “it’s all there in the cloud, immediately accessible from a smartphone or tablet ready to share with other users via Facewatch.” Similarly, for unattended locations Cloudview can be configured to issue an email or SMS alert in response to motion or other sensors being triggered, enabling recipients to view the associated clips immediately. Now users will be able to upload those clips direct to Facewatch, both for sharing with others and to inform the relevant police authority with the minimum of fuss and delay. Commenting on the new partnership, Simon Gordon, Chairman of Facewatch said “The partnership with Cloudview will be of great benefit both to our users and Police. Facewatch users will be able to use CCTV images to identify potential troublemakers and quickly share that information with others, and to the police who will no longer have to send officers on-site to collect vital video evidence.”

C

PSI CAUGHT UP WITH JAMES WICKES TO DISCUSS THE PARTNERSHIP: How did the partnership come about? In 2014 we were awarded the Secured By Design status for the Cloudview service. This increased our profile with police forces across the UK. Cloudview has been positively received and the question was asked – would it be possible to integrate the functionality of Cloudview and Facewatch? This has resulted in a partnership that enables a Facewatch user who needs to send CCTV evidence to the police with a crime report to be able to automatically add the video footage to a report from where it can be distributed to other retailers, police etc. This represents a huge saving in time for all concerned and most importantly means that crucial evidence can be used quickly. Obtaining CCTV evidence from recording equipment and getting it to the police is not always straightforward, often hampered by a lack of staff training, recording formats, firewalls and faulty equipment. To date Facewatch has made the reporting of crime an effortless experience now, combined with Cloudview integrating critical evidential footage is achieved in the blink of an eye. Will fitting the Cloudview system to existing installations be a straightforward procedure? The system is simply a ‘plug and play’ unit about the size of a pack of playing cards which connects into the back of an analogue or IP camera or into your network automatically creating a connection with Cloudview. So if there is a DVR or NVR onsite all of the data that is recorded locally is also put into the cloud in a format that is much easier to work with and access. It’s also extremely secure. Does this mean that Facewatch customers can now do away with on-site recording? To be honest I’m completely ambivalent on the subject of local recording. There are clients that have gone straight into using the cloud and not fitting DVRs at all and there are many DVR/NVR users that want to keep recording at a local level as well as in the cloud. There is no right or wrong way to do it. How will the process work; will Cloudview be included in the Facewatch signing–on fee? The way it is working at the moment is that we are telling Facewatch users about Cloudview, a service that gives their CCTV systems real teeth and I expect it will lead to us promoting Facewatch along with Cloudview. Facewatch will also promote Cloudview to their clients as it will make their lives far easier when it comes to reviewing footage and providing essential evidence as quickly as possible.

INTERVIEW

Feedback to aid 2015 event G

This month we talk to Gerry Dunphy of IBM Global about IFSEC International and his plans for the event going forward

erry Dunphy is the Event Director for the worldwide security and fire portfolio at IBM Global which includes IFSEC International and FIREX. PSI caught up with him a while before the doors open on the 2015 event to find out how it is all going and what changes are planned for the second year that the show will be held in London since its long run in Birmingham.

How are the preparations going for the event in 2015? Swimmingly! We’re now only five months out from the show, the floor plan is 96 per cent sold out and it’s all coming together. We have taken on board all the feedback from visitors and exhibitors to ensure that IFSEC 2015 delivers exactly what they’re looking for right now. IFSEC is an evolving event and we’re constantly looking at how it can continue to exceed the industry’s expectations. Part of that has been negotiating preferential rates on travel, accommodation and speaking directly with the venue to ensure costs of food onsite are suitable for all budgets. Do you have any plans at this stage to change anything from the last event?

We’ve conducted a significant amount of research with both our exhibitors and visitors to get their thoughts on what they like about the show and what they want to see more of. Identifying genuine innovation on the show floor has been a theme that really stands out and so we’re launching the Innovation Arena. This is an opportunity for visitors to see products and technologies that haven’t been seen elsewhere, whether that may be from one of the larger manufacturers or an independent solution provider. We know that IFSEC International is the place to come and keep up to date with the latest developments within the industry so we want to make that as easy as possible for the visitors. We’re also going to be introducing the Gadget Zone into the Security & Fire Installer Live feature that was a huge success in 2014. Again, research has told us that visitors want to get hands on with the products before they buy and this will provide the perfect opportunity to try out the biggest and latest range of products in one place. Another big change is that FIREX International will be located alongside IFSEC International in 2015. We’ve identified the

“We had such a positive response at the end of the show in 2014 but the stand out success has to be the huge numbers of visitors” 14

increased number of installers looking to diversify into fire and with these two events being more closely aligned, it will make it even easier to give them the information they need to do so. It is also an opportunity to speak to experts that will be available to give advice on how to install products without damaging the integrity of fire protected materials. What was your opinion as to the success of the show in 2014? We had such a positive response at the end of the show in 2014 but the stand out success has to be the huge numbers of visitors. We saw more visitors, with bigger budgets and had an overwhelming level of support for the new venue at ExCeL in London. Overall visitor budgets have increased by 8.6 per cent, demonstrating the growth that the security industry is currently experiencing. Stand out trends from visitor interest included an increase in demand to see the latest innovation in: integrated security, intruder alarms, physical security and perimeter protection, which is how we’re shaping the 2015 show. We obviously had some learnings around navigation but those improvements have been made through additional signing and our interactive app that will be available for download soon. There was a concern that north-based installers might not travel to ExCeL, did the numbers reflect this? While it was only natural that there was a reduction in the proportion of northern based installers we saw more than a 45 per cent increase in installers attending from other regions of the UK. Investing our efforts into developing an area specifically for these visitors is one of our main focuses. What work/research are you doing to make sure that the show remains relevant to installers and also appeals to end-users? Speaking directly with the audience, we’ve received honest feedback about what they want and that’s products. That’s why we’re enhancing the Security & Fire Installer Live feature of the show to include more hands-on, demo areas. It’s important that we conduct this research year on year as the industry develops at a rapid pace, so we need to ensure that we’re leading the trends and it’s reflected at the show.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Over the years the event has seen fewer physical security exhibitors (such as manned guarding) and more from the electronic security and software sectors. Do you think that the physical security suppliers will return to the show? It’s not that the physical security exhibitors are necessarily moving away from the show; in fact in 2014 Securitas was on the show floor for the first time. This in itself is a demonstration that there is a demand for manned guarding at the show and the presence of Securitas last year solidifies that. However, it’s not just manned guarding that makes up physical security, we have a number of physical security exhibitors who manufacture fences and bollards. It’s not necessarily a case of fewer physical security exhibitors taking part, a lot of manufacturers are diversifying to incorporate intelligent solutions through voice activated alarms, deterrent lighting and behaviour analytics. On a personal note, 2015 will be the first show with you as Director for the IFSEC Global portfolio. How are you enjoying the pressure!!? It’s an exciting challenge, I’ve worked alongside IFSEC for a number of years as event director of FIREX and so it’s a natural progression to take the reins of IFSEC. 2015 will be the first full year of being at the helm and we have a lot to showcase on the show floor. It’s great to be able to look at it with a fresh pair of eyes and become more embedded in the security industry. What will IFSEC International 2020 look like? Five years is a significant amount of time, especially at the rate technology develops. We’ll be intrigued to see what our exhibitors develop and how we can reflect that on the show floor with even more interactivity whether that be through holograms or even hover boards to get round the show – never say never!

“Speaking directly with the audience, we’ve received honest feedback about what they want and that’s products. That’s why we’re enhancing the Security & Fire Installer Live feature” 15

The 2MP IR corrected varifocal lens has a range of 2.8 to 12mm giving a horizontal field of view from 81.2° to 22.6°. Sensitivity is good but in many cases the camera will use its inbuilt IR LEDs for low light observation. A 3-axis internal camera mount allows the unit to be ceiling or side wall mounted. A conventional BNC video connection lead and power lead terminated in a clearly identified terminal block are both around 85cm long. Cables are fed through the base of the camera but a removable side plate allows for a side entry conduit connection. The clear dome is removed by way of 4 x Torx screws and is connected to the base by a small plastic strap allowing it to hang down for set-up when installed. A small printed circuit mounted “Tact” switch is used to turn on the on-screen menu and acts as a joystick to navigate through the menu structure options. There are ten main menu options with some leading to further sub-menus. The 20-page manual provided with the camera gave limited details for some of the menu options and noted that some were “not applicable” or “do not use” so this may lead to confusion and inadequate settings for some installations.

Menu Options The main menu options are as follows:

1. Focus adj: an aid that provides three vertical bars that indicate when focus is maximised. While these are quite helpful if working with a small test monitor, the focus and zoom adjustments themselves are very coarse and you need small fingers or careful screwdriver adjustment to move and lock them precisely. There is no mention of any method to adjust the focus for low light operation so the use of neutral density filters or a late commissioning visit will still be required. There was a slight de-focussing when the bowl was refitted but this is probably to be expected with such a small diameter bowl. 2. Lens: either ALC (default) or ELC. 3. Exposure: this has a sub menu to adjust brightness, shutter, Sens-Up and AGC. The SensUp has a range from zero to 50 in 6 steps with x2 being the default. 4. Backlight: this is set to WDR by default and this has adjustable weighting settings from Low, Middle (default) or High. The alternative settings of HLC or BLC can be chosen with a selectable window zone. It should be noted that some of the advanced features cannot be used while WDR is enabled. 5. Day & Night: this was set at extern by default which appeared to mean that the camera switch-over would be controlled by the light sensor on the LED array as there are no external inputs available. This mode did tend to operate at too high a light level and in certain scenes could result in the LEDs flashing as they were at the changeover threshold resulting in a flickering monochrome image. The second option of IR LED OFF or ON didn’t initially turn off the LEDs but after a power cycle did, so this may be something to watch out for. Other sub options included AGC Threshold, AGC Margin and Delay. Two additional options for Anti-Sat and Extern S/W were controllable but referred to as “Not applicable”. 6. White Balance: Auto (default), Auto Ext, Preset and Manual with Low, Middle and High (default) temperature settings and R and B

gain controls. 7. Image: this options sub-menu includes Sharpness, Gamma, Pedestal, Colour Gain, Mirror and Flip modes (these last two to reverse or invert the image). 8. DNR: this noise reduction mode is set to Middle as default but can be turned Off, Low or High to suit recording and display requirements. 9. Special: this includes D-Zoom (allowing the image to be zoomed in up to eight times in 0.1 increments), ACE (not explained), Defog (to increase image detail if weather is poor), Shading (noted as “Do not use”), Privacy (this feature has up to 16 privacy boxes that can be changed in size and position and given different colour and contrast) and finally Intelligent that has options to set Motion sensing, Alarm (not available as no inputs on camera) and Quick Zoom. These latter modes allow the camera to track movement within the scene and to zoom in for a defined period on an area of movement. With limited information available, these features are difficult to use and gave unreliable results. 10. System: the available options are COM (again not available), View Angle (Wide 4:3 (default), Wide 16:9 and Normal), CVBS (Pal or NTSC), Language, Cam Title and Reset. The number of options is unnecessarily wide particularly for a fixed camera that has no external inputs or method of remote control. This means that features such as Defog would have to be permanently enabled and may impact on

other features of performance. Menu options that have no function or should not be used should not be available to the user and should have been omitted from the devices menus. The camera is claimed to have a resolution of 1000TVL colour and monochrome but as this is based on a sensor with just 1305 horizontal pixels and using PAL encoding with a composite video output, there will be plenty for engineers to discuss at length regarding Lines v TVL and limits of resolution. The reality is that the camera can resolve significant detail but much of this will be lost in any system using RG59 type coaxial cables. Perhaps the advantage of having a high pixel count in an analogue camera is the capability to digitally zoom into an alarmed area however this can only be an advantage with real time detection and a significant time would need to be spent on configuring this camera for suitable results.

The advantage of having a high pixel count in an analogue camera is the capability to digitally zoom into an alarmed area

Conclusion This camera appears to be trying to provide features that are now the norm for IP based models that can be readily remotely configured. It will be dependent on the installer getting the configuration right first time and therefore will be unlikely to be fully optimised in the majority of cases.

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at some of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.

Carbon Monoxide sensor added to range Pyronix has announced the launch of a new accessory for the Enforcer range of products, the CO-WE carbon monoxide (CO) sensor. The CO-WE uses an electrochemical sensing unit to measure the amount of carbon monoxide present in the area. Carbon Monoxide is a deadly gas which is colourless, odourless and tasteless. The only way of protecting against possible CO toxicity is to install a carbon monoxide sensor. It will integrate directly with the panels, being programmed to the ‘Gas’ zone so there will be an audible alarm should the detector sense the presence of CO whether or not the system is armed. The CO-WE is a two-way wireless peripheral compatible with the Enforcer security system and the EURO hybrid panels through the EURO-ZEM32-WE. www.pyronix.com

Positioning system now IP and HD Pelco by Schneider Electric has announced that its Esprit Series integrated positioning system is now available in IP and HD with the new Esprit HD Series IP Positioning System. The Esprit HD provides users with live streaming of images over the Internet using a standard web browser and delivers on the industry’s need for performance and image quality in all settings, including rugged environments. The latest advancements provide integration into virtually any IP-based HD system through customisable settings and are ideal to view details such as faces, license plates, casino playing cards and more. Advancements include: integrated analytics suite, user-defined customisation, protected camera optics and electronics and seamless compatibility. The new Esprit HD is also compatible with Digital Sentry NVs (DS NVs), full-feature video management software, which is available as a free download. DS NVs includes four free Pelco IP licenses and allows for the management of video from up to 64 cameras. www.pelco.com

IP cameras utilise DSP technology It has been announced that Grundig’s new IP camera range uses Sony Xarina digital signal processing (DSP) technology, with 1.3MP and 2MP Sony Exmor CMOS sensor options. Xarina DSP is an IP camera platform, combining image signal processing (ISP) and video stream encoding. Xarina makes the cameras extremely sensitive in low light and 3D Noise Reduction lowers the noise caused by chroma gain control, improving signal-to-noise ratio and low light sensitivity. The cameras will also run at up to 60FPS, increasing sensitivity again and reducing motion blur. As light levels drop, the camera will remains in its colour mode for longer, with improved visibility, before IR illumination is activated. The Quad Scan WDR, enabled by the Sony Exmor CMOS sensor, is responsible for image quality in high-contrast, heavily back lit scenes. The Xarina IP camera range produces quad, Progressive Scan video streams in H.264 and MJPEG formats. Full HD, 1080p streams can be used for recording and lower resolution 720p, D1 or CIF video streams (which transmit more efficiently and use less bandwidth) can be used for PCs, tablets and smartphones, which do not display in Full HD. www.grundig-security.com

HD video quad display system launched Ovation Systems has announced the availability of FourSight-DVI, an HD video quad display monitoring system. Designed for fixed and portable installations, it enables up to four PAL or NTSC cameras to be viewed on a single high resolution LCD display and is reported to be available at around 50% of the cost of traditional multiview systems. FourSight-DVI has four BNC input connectors which allow standard definition legacy cameras to be connected to HD monitors without any loss of quality. This is achieved by processing the standard definition feeds together into a single high-resolution DVI (or HDMI) output and mapping pixels on a one-for-one basis to an HD screen with real-time updates for each channel. In the default mode, FourSight-DVI shows all four video inputs as a quad allowing all the cameras to be simultaneously monitored. If required, users can switch to a full screen view for each camera. A further four modes can be quickly selected to display different combinations of the camera feeds on the output screen. It also automatically configures itself for operation with most high-resolution monitors and supports resolutions from 1024 x 768 pixels to 1920 x 1080. www.ovation.co.uk

Recorders provide extra protection TeleEye has announced the launch of the TeleEye GX680 Series of 4-, 9- and 16- channel digital video recorders, which are designed for recording and securing video data captured from TeleEye network cameras and other ONVIF Profile S cameras. The GX680 Series has incorporated the TeleEye HD SMAC- M multi stream video coder with four independent video streams allowing simultaneous HD video recording at a maximum resolution of 1080p. This is made possible by compressing the HD video to a smaller size of up to 50% less compared to a H.264 video coder, leading to faster transmission via different network environments, smoother video streaming, occupying less storage resources, and allowing longer recording time simultaneously. The GX680 Series is not only able to enhance the security level of all TeleEye IP cameras but also for other IP cameras in compliance with ONVIF Profile S standards. The GX recorder has the ability to completely separate the video network from an IP network. Meanwhile, it provides extra protection for the video data during internet transmission, so that hackers are not able to decode the data streams. www.teleeye.com

I’m Matthew Phelps, Managing Director of Eaton’s Security business. Working Smarter is a series of columns where I examine the key issues affecting professional security installers.

Time is money As every installer knows, time is money or value. Working smarter means using products and services that help use time more effectively. Given that profit is the difference between what you charge for something and the total cost of supply, it surprises me just how many people base their purchasing criteria solely on a single element, say the trade counter price, instead of the overall cost. By way of an example, if one piece of equipment is priced 20 per cent lower than another but takes longer to install or is more complex to programme the true cost is in fact much higher than it first appears. Installation time is where profit margins are improved. Shorter project times lead to greater profit opportunity and mean that an installer can move on to the next job faster. Some installers explain that a longer project time drives chargeable hours which lead to improved profits. There are undoubtedly cases where this is true. However an alternative is to charge for the job rather than the time. Let’s say that Installer A can deliver a project in a single day compared to Installer B needing two. Ultimately the value and therefore the two prices can be similar – it’s just that Installer A uses half the time and therefore earns more profit. With all this talk of Installer profit we should remember that the end customer and their value objectives are the priority. For commercial projects a faster, cleaner, less disruptive installation delivers higher value than one that takes longer. Equally, residential customers see things in a similar vein, albeit domestically focused. Say, for example, a person has 25 days’ holiday a year. How many would choose to spend any of that precious annual leave waiting in while their security system is installed? So for them it is far more valuable to see the job completed quicker. In truth we all put a value, whether at work or home, on less disruption and more convenience. Product and system selection is too important to be based on initial price alone and far more robust selection criteria should be employed. This could mean using a radio based system, especially where installing a wired alternative could adversely affect the fabric of a building. Similarly, using products that can be easily replaced using an existing wiring infrastructure could save a great deal of time. In my last Working Smarter column I talked about why sustainability should apply to all aspects of how security products are designed, manufactured and used. Sustainability is also about good business practices, and fast and efficient installations create a better relationship with customers and add more value to what installers do. Lowest price is not sustainable – sustainability is about using time wisely.

INTRUDER TRENDS

The intruder evolution The intruder alarm market is probably the oldest established electronic security sector there is in the UK. So how has it changed over the last few years? ime changes everything, somebody clever once said and this is certainly true of all technology, even the most established of inventions. The intruder alarm device was developed long ago with the first electromagnetic alarm system in the world patented in 1853. Until this time is was common for people to use guard dogs or even geese to warn of trespassers on their property. Unfortunately for the guard goose salesman the idea of an intruder alarm system took off and began forming into the sector we know today. Before the end of the 19th Century the central monitoring station format was created (by ADT), but it wasn’t until the 1970s that the first motion detectors were incorporated into the alarm system. And with the mass house building programmes of the 80s and onwards, intruder alarms have been fitted to many new homes as a matter of course. Insurance companies also champion the installation of alarms and with the quite recent improvements in wireless capabilities and reliability, systems are easier than ever to fit. So is that it for the evolution of the intruder alarm? Well we know from the growth in integrating security disciplines that there are always developments on the go, but apart from that, the sector is seeing a definite trend due to the changing social landscape. The next step for intruder alarms looks to be made up of two distinct areas: simplicity and connectivity.

T

Changing markets There are a number of established ‘professional’ systems in the UK such as Enforcer (Pyronix), Premier Elite (Texecom), Domonial (Honeywell), Scantronic (Cooper), Agility 3 (Risco) and many others. These systems have seen various upgrades over the years and enjoy a growing range of peripherals and accessories such as smoke detectors, shock detectors and pet immune PIRs. They have defined residential and commercial markets and will continue to compete for market share. The recent ‘Burglar & Intruder Alarm Systems’ market report from Plimsoll indicates that 48.3% of the 576 companies installing alarms are showing ‘Strong’ performance so there is still a

www.psimagazine.co.uk

customer base out there for systems that need servicing and is providing work. However, it is clear that the alarm manufacturers feel that there is a new generation of customer that needs a new type of intruder alarm system – and we are now seeing those technologies hit the market. The first distinct area of development in the market is simplicity. For the systems mentioned earlier there are many different panels and peripherals to choose from which can be a bit of headache for both the installer and the customer. To help deal with this situation the manufacturers are now seeing the benefit of providing their established systems in kit format. This is absolutely ideal for the wireless side of things as it deals directly with the ‘off the shelf’ DIY offerings of the High Street. For example Texecom’s Ricochet meshnetworking system for point-to-point wireless security systems is proven in large-scale industrial complexes. With mesh-networking the range of the system is not limited with multiple devices capable of relaying messages to and from even the most remote locations in a building. However it is no longer just the larger sites or businesses that can benefit from Ricochet as Texecom’s Premier Elite Series has been expanded and enhanced with the recent release of new control panel models and peripheral devices, thus bringing commercial-grade security into a wider range of applications. Entry level systems have often been toned down versions of their more ‘professional’ relation however with the announcement of five new wireless kits featuring a selection of control systems and peripherals it is simpler to find the

INTRUDER TRENDS

The tale of a criminal under arrest asking whether his holding cell has WiFi is absolutely indicative of the modern technology expectations kit to suit the needs of the application. Obviously, for the installer there are many benefits of fitting a wireless system including the time it takes to fit and the flexibility of being able to place detectors in areas that might prove tricky in a wired installation, but the fact that the Premier Elite technology is more than capable of handling any situation that can arise in a residential application, makes the system a more robust choice than one from an online retailer or store. In the interest of fairness we should point out that similar offerings are available from other vendors too with the Agility 3 Kit, Enforcer Kit, Visonic kit etc…But the Texecom kit launch does indicate that ‘commercial’ grade alarm systems have a role in the residential market for those customer that want a proven security panel and peripherals they can trust compared to something that looks similar but doesn’t always deliver. Furthermore by recommending one of these kits the installer can fit a unit that will perhaps warrant a maintenance contract and also offers the added bonus of continual upgrades as the panels will allow the addition of further detectors and sounders as the need arises. As well as being able to buy a kit containing compatible components without searching through a product catalogue.

Next generation The changing look of alarm panels? PowerMaster-33 G2 from Visonic utilises FHSS technology and a two-way wireless network

24

Today’s 20-35 year-olds expect connectivity wherever they are. The tale of a criminal under arrest asking whether his holding cell had WiFi is absolutely indicative of the modern technology expectations. The next generation of people setting up home also want stylish little products that give them a choice of how they can be alerted to an incident and how it is dealt with. There are a number of products coming onto the market that deal with this requirement, but here we will briefly mention two of them to outline the technology capabilities. Already mentioned elsewhere in this edition is Le Sucre from Honeywell; a white box that looks nothing like an alarm panel. The unit provides a wireless range of

more than 1000 metres open space and integrates a GPRS module for alarm transmissions and notifications. Essentially this means that the customer can choose whether to receive an email, hear a siren or watch a video in the event of an incident. It also allows the remote arming or disarming of the units and connects via Cloud technology so that the home owner can connect via a range of devices. Along similar lines is the PowerMaster-33 G2 from Visonic which utilises Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology and a twoway wireless network for streamlined communication. With a transmission range of 2000m (6500ft) line of sight, it covers significantly larger premises than traditional systems, without repeaters. The panel can be installed out of sight, which as we discussed, is appealing to customers looking for a discreet solution for their security requirements. The panel accommodates more than 120 wireless devices including up to 64 zones, up to ten KP-250 PG2 keypads plus 32 keyfobs, eight sirens and four repeaters. It also has optional GSM/GPRS/IP modules. Both of these systems address the needs of the younger home owning generation, but crucially get them onto the intruder alarm ‘ladder’ with products that meet their expectations of connectivity and choice. Whether they then decide to move onto a more expansive model as their needs develop is perhaps a chance to upsell them.

The future The basic premise of the intruder alarm system has not changed since 1853; the property owner wants to detect and know if there is an incident. Whether this is a break-in, fire etc there is a compatible peripheral available for all of the major manufacturers’ panels. The wired vs wireless reliability debate has now concluded to put us in a situation today where the next steps for the sector are dealing with how simple it is to specify the equipment (via kits) and how the incidents are reported and managed. Customers want options. Talking to installers at a recent event one of the developments they envisaged for the intruder alarm market is a change in the method of connectivity in the future. In addition to GPRS, it was thought that 4G and even television receivers such as a Sky Box were all potentials carriers for alarm signals. One thing is for sure, the ‘always connected’ generation will expect to be able to connect to their alarm system wherever they are, which will only serve to bring the intruder panel into the realm of home automation and a further function of the smartphone/tablet. Time changes everything….

MEET THE INSTALLER

Meet the installer This month we talk to John D’Aprano of DS Systems about working in the security industry Do you use a distributor or buy direct from manufacturers? We use both depending on the project. A lot of our specialist equipment comes from manufacturers that we have established a close relationship with. For instance the ability to make truly integrated systems often relies upon Software Development Kits (SDK) and Active Protocol Interface (API) which we work closely with the manufacturers to create and this often requires a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to be signed for the efficacy of the continued security. Is 3rd party accreditation beneficial to you? Yes, DS Systems has a variety of accreditations ranging from Safecontractor to SSAIB approval to ISO: 9001 certification. This ensures that we are up to date with current health and safety and are constantly monitoring our processes to ensure that they are efficient. SSAIB in particular, provides the customer with confidence that we are able to design, install and maintain security systems to recognised standards. What would be a typical project for you? There is no such thing as a typical project for DS Systems, but a realistic project for us might be an access control system with CCTV and remote monitoring, maybe also with a pair of automated

There are many factors that play a part in how the system needs to operate with the site and how the customer requires the equipment to integrate into their security procedures. It is the responsibility of our Technical Surveyor and Installation team to ensure that the customer’s requirements are met in full and if there are any snags (or challenges

along the way) we work with the customer to devise a quick and efficient solution. Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? Any trouble recruiting installers? We find there is a huge skills gap within our specialised market when looking for truly technical engineers. Many of the candidates we interview who seem to have relevant experience on paper, have limited understanding of how the latest technology works and sometimes rather basic knowledge of electronics. In our interview process we ask applicants to take part in a basic technical test, this has seen many fail without a clue of a basic circuit. When we employ an engineer at DS Systems, we invest a lot of time in them through training and coaching their skills to enable them to become efficient and expert in their role. Many of our team have been with our company for years and we try hard to be an employer of choice. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? The sales process starts with an understanding of the customer’s needs. We would then look at the site and work out a scheme, strategy and cost that will solve their problem and fit their budget. There are often unrealistic expectations from customers for system performance or cost. But by detailing how the system will operate and providing a full specification, these issues are often overcome. We look upon the system cost as a return of investment for the customer over a number of years. This enables us to show how a cheap system may not be good value over a long period, where as a quality system, regularly maintained will keep performing for years to come. What is the security industry’s biggest myth? That a security system from the local DIY store will be as good as a professionally designed and installed system from us. We often get phone calls regarding CCTV systems during which people express their surprise at the cost of an install because they have seen a kit in a high street retailers for much less. What would make your job easier? Why would I want to make it easier? I love my job, I get to play with all the latest gadgets, I get to break things, repair things and push the boundaries that others are prepared to accept. The team at DS are the ones that do all the real work. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security product? An implanted device that knows where everybody is. This could be used for crime reduction, health and safety, access control and policing. The unit would be self-powered and could be used for navigation (once habits are formed it could even drive your car). They could be used as payment at coffee shops and would even advise the barista of your regular drink which would be ready and paid for as you arrive. Failing that, an internet of CCTV systems all linked together or maybe DNA analysis for access control, imagine being able to get into your property by simply breathing on the reader which in turn is able to decipher the DNA in your breath….. Will England ever win the football World Cup again? Football is something I have never been able to get my head around. A leather ball? Full of air? No batteries? No cables? No wires? I just don’t get the entertainment value I’m afraid. If you won £25,000 what would you do with it? I would invest half in shares, something relatively safe but not exciting, and then I would use the other half for a fabulous family holiday, maybe skiing in the States or any mountainous region that has good Wi-Fi!

Promoting intelligence his month we asked our expert panel whether they were finding themselves talking more about business intelligence via security systems these days and if so, what the advantages are for the final customer/end-user that installers can promote.

T

Mike Gillespie – Advent IM & SyI It is really good to see this rising on the agenda of many business and organisations now. It is something we have been talking about for quite a while and trying to encourage FM and Security professionals to take the opportunity to shift their perception and be seen as an investment and not a cost centre. What better way than by adding actionable data back into the business? The interest in ‘Big Data’ means that there are now multiple ways of leveraging the data that results from our security and building management systems in ways that will add value and save cost. Turning the data into insight requires imagination but as action is taken and savings start to be made then businesses will look to expand their data sources and security has changed its profile. Using PIRs to report by exception is an example of how a business can use a piece of security equipment to help save cost; supporting the planning of peak and trough occupancy and allowing for heating and lighting to be suitably lowered or even turned off in downtimes. A 1 degree lowering of heating creates great savings in terms of heating economy as we know, so multiply this across an estate and you start to see some major cost reduction. Retailers use CCTV images not only secure assets but observe how shoppers interact with promotions and other store elements. The use of high quality imaging from security cameras is nothing new to big retailers like supermarkets and there is no reason to believe that as long as the use of the images remains compliant with the Data Protection Act, that that would be the only application for it. Seeing how people respond to a display or A and B testing of two displays suddenly becomes much more insight-laden and the information shareable and actionable. Security needs to get into the boardroom, most security professionals will say it can be a struggle. The use of security originated data in cross silo, CSuite level reporting is a great opportunity to show how to maximise the ROI from security spend and win friends across an organisation.

Julie Kenny – Pyronix The importance of the nonsecurity applications of traditional security systems will become more and more a deciding factor in the buying process. As devices become interconnected on the internet of things (IoT), the demand for systems which ‘solve’ more than one problem and present more value to the customer will grow. In my opinion, the customer is evolving. The value and benefit which was once considered additional is now becoming fundamental. As this happens, the value proposition we present must evolve too. Looking at a business setting, the IoT will be a big driver here. Multiple device types that communicate with each other over the same system can offer greater business intelligence reporting. However, whilst aspects of security can provide data for business intelligence, the size and scope of business intelligence is vast, informing a wide range of operational and strategic decisions. On a domestic front, technologically convergent offerings will become more prevalent. In this sense, ‘domestic intelligence’ will be the driver for this market, with a network of devices on the system to offer greater visibility for the homeowner. This will mean a more informed and immersive experience for the user, with greater control and flexibility. To an installation company selling this product, the obvious solution is the ability to holistically monitor your home. That doesn’t just mean security sensors or cameras, it means your energy usage, your heating, your fridge, your lighting, your water: all from the same device.

Given that security is generally seen as a grudge purchase, how important are the nonsecurity applications of the technology in selling services and technology?

Peter Ainsworth – Samsung Techwin Europe

The massive processing power of the DSP chipsets incorporated into latest generation of high definition cameras means that there are now some great opportunities to generate new business by providing end-users with added value from their video surveillance systems. It’s a win-win situation for all parties, including manufacturers of cameras and recording devices who understand the value of working in partnership with specialist software development companies and it is certainly an opportunity for systems integrators and installers of video 29

surveillance, whether they operate in the IT arena or are part of the traditional electronic industry. Open Platform is a phrase that we are likely to hear increasingly used and it relates to the opportunity to take advantage of the spare processing power of a camera’s DSP chipset, to download and run edge based applications in a similar way to adding apps to a smartphone. Having the ability to utilise on board applications creates opportunities for multitasking, with various departments within a business or organisation able to simultaneously collect and analyse valuable management information via different specialist video analytics applications. It offers operation managers the potential to improve efficiency in areas such as process control, health and safety, marketing and human resource management, as well as enhancing the ability of security personnel to react quickly and effectively to any security threat. Retailers, for example, can use cameras with an Open Platform capability to integrate with other in-store systems, software and technologies, such as EAS, EPOS, access control, ANPR, facial recognition, people counting, heat maps and human resource data, to analyse customer traffic patterns, manage queues or understand the implications of customer behaviour in relation to signage, store layout and promotions.

Business Intelligence is one of the newer terms encompassing added-value functionality for electronic security systems. As we understand it, this provides security installers and system integrators with, for example, a useful and more meaningful sales proposition whilst also offering their end-user customers tangible operational gains to enhance sales, improve revenue and strengthen customer loyalty/retention. Technological advances, the pervading influence of IT, and the convergence of security equipment with other building management systems, are all factors helping to enable Business Intelligence and other added-value functionality become a convincing commercial proposition. The use of analytics linked with CCTV, movement detectors and access control devices has been trailed as a way in which retailers can monitor customer footfall, spending patterns and reactions to store layout and product placement, for instance. At two petrol stations on the A19 near

Hartlepool an integrated system involving forecourt pump dispensing equipment, security cameras and CRM (customer relationship management) software has enabled the site to address both risk-related issues such as costly ‘drive-offs’ (motorists leaving without paying for fuel), along with an ability to implement a range of positive management improvements that help protect ‘bottom line’ profitability while increasing merchandise transactions. Alarm management is another area where the benefits of system interoperability can be realised. Equipment integration can, for example, ensure that sites improve their security whilst also reducing their energy usage and minimising related fire risks –all of these gains being achieved with lower total cost of ownership. On-site health & safety improvements, raised staff morale and consequent reductions in insurance premiums are further demonstrable upsides from this type of added-value security. Staff ‘buy-in’ to the benefits – achieved when they understand that this type of enhanced systems functionality helps protect them and make their job easier – is further icing on the cake. All of these examples don’t even touch on the additional upsides of energy savings achievable through ‘green’ security, which offer further measurable and attractive operational cost reductions. But ultimately, all of these Business Intelligence and other added-value benefits represent a compelling case for customer spending on security systems that, importantly, pay for themselves – both in terms of initial installation, longer-term running costs, and the positive operational and site management contributions they can provide.

Brian Song – IDIS Europe Today video surveillance is not just used for security monitoring purposes and is increasingly becoming an effective business intelligence tool. In particular, it’s the integration capabilities of IP and networked surveillance that make this possible and can result in the reduced operating expenditure for many businesses. This provides an opportunity for manufacturers to work with their integration partners to develop business cases that demonstrate value beyond security, and in doing so change the perception of security as a grudge purchase. We are doing just this when it comes to integration with Point of Sale (PoS) systems. By overlaying transaction data on top of live and recorded footage, we’re providing retailers with a

EDIT panel jan15_PSI_jan15 23/12/2014 14:06 Page 3

clear picture of what is happening at point of sale. As items are scanned, they are displayed over the video allowing operators to instantly verify that a transaction was passed with the correct merchandise, or if the barcode of another product was scanned. This allows retailers to reduce loss and fraud that very often occurs at the check-out. Reducing shrinkage by even a small percentage can mean that many retailers can realise a rapid return on investment from upgrading their surveillance to networked HD, which is a win-win for the manufacturer and their integration partner, as well as the end user customer. In addition, many larger retailers are now using surveillance analytics for queue counting and marketing purposes. While queue counting is fairly simple analytics and support customer satisfaction, marketing departments are cutting costs by taking staff off the road and instead using video to instruct in-house staff on window dressing and promotional displays, where as previously this was carried out by specialists travelling from store to store. Another such example, is the increasing demand for Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). While there is an obvious use for traffic information gathering and in preventing and detecting crime, other businesses are seeing this as a way to drive operational efficiencies. In the healthcare sector, hospitals are looking toward integrated security solutions to provide patients with the ability to book treatments online and simultaneously reserve and pay for car parking. This takes the onus off staff managing and monitoring car parks, while providing convenience for the patient. In another sector, as more and more students drive, universities face the burden of parking management often across aging states never designed for thousands vehicles. So the higher education sectors is another industry sector than can benefit from upgraded surveillance together with ANPR. On the whole, where there’s an opportunity for surveillance integrated with nonsecurity applications to automate previously manually intensive processes, there’s usually a simple and transparent business case to be made.

Daniel Wan – Honeywell

Security systems have long been seen as a necessary expenditure in order to protect a business’s property and assets. However, modern systems are now able to offer so much more than the standard benefits promoted on the box. Some

www.psimagazine.co.uk

modern systems can even be used to generate revenue and can prove an invaluable business tool. Honeywell Security has been advocating the non-security applications of security systems for some time, and we have a number of customers who are starting to record the benefits in a number of different settings. Video analytics systems, for example, can provide invaluable customer data when applied to retail services. Loitering alerts, which are traditionally used by security systems to identify potential shoplifters, can also identify items that should be placed in a more prominent position in the store. Video analytics can also be installed to track certain movements. While reaching out for an item without purchasing may indicate criminal activity it may also spot customers who are in need of customer assistance and provide an alert to the manager who can then deploy staff. Our security systems can also track footfall in and out of the shop, helping retailers make informed marketing decisions, or manage queues and other staffing issues. For other sectors, such as banking, security systems are a necessary purchase rather than a grudge but still provide immense business benefit. The new European regulations such as Basel II, Basel III, and Sarbanes Oxley are a constant source of stress for security professionals, as they require constant audits of the bank’s compliance and security measures. Security systems which can also deliver compliance reports swiftly, at the push of a button, are therefore vital for businesses in this sector and are rightly in high demand.

Video analytics systems can provide invaluable customer data when applied to retail services. Loitering alerts can also identify items that should be placed in a more prominent position in the store

John Coleman - CSL Some unsung advantages experienced by end-users can be more subtle. One such example is the convergence of Smartphone apps which many Installers see as going some way to reduce the grudge purchase mentality of alarm systems from their customers. Some of the ‘softer’ benefits that go with apps are often the first thing that are asked for when quoting for a job. If a domestic user had an app which could verify that their property is safe to enter when the alarm panel is un-set, confirm this with CCTV footage and also protect a vehicle overnight when it is set that would be a real value-add. One of the most common high value domestic crimes is to break in and steal car keys from the entrance lobby of the house, where they are often left. An alarm system may take on a preventative role in this scenario and also encourage the homeowner to utilise their security system when it is needed most. 31

REMOTE ACCESS

Security over the phone… Security, like every other component of modern life, has become linked with portable devices. The ability to maintain, control and view the status of security equipment is now expected f you were ever unsure as to the saturation of smartphones in the UK consider that PC Advisor recently ran a review of the most popular smartphones in the UK (won by the LG G3 by the way) and there were 47 of them! That’s probably about 40 more models than most people could name, so it’s no surprise given the sheer numbers involved, plus the fact that people carry them everywhere, that the security industry should be aligned with their use. The need for constant connectivity and seemingly addictive need to look at the phone every few minutes is driving just about every market including books, music, gaming, shopping, socialising, fitness etc onto portable devices. In a recent survey it was revealed that using a smartphone to make voice calls came in at number six in the list of common uses. The multi functionality of the modern phone is already killing off sales of innovations from our lifetime including calculators, hand held games consoles and digital cameras. Add the popularity of tablet devices to that of smartphones and you have a potentially essential method of working with security technology. The obvious ones are arming and disarming of intruder alarms and video verification via cameras. The development of IP systems lends itself to the growth in portable access to security data and following the ‘Internet of Everything’ comes the ‘Integration of Everything’. Most manufacturers have realised the potential for opportunity with hand held devices and many have launched Apps allowing access to the installed systems for status updates and remote maintenance. All of which fall nicely into the requirements of the modern customer. In the early days of some of the Apps the cynics amongst us considered that remote video verification via smartphone was a bit of a novelty and a technology looking for a home. However, one installer told me recently that an increasing number of his customers are now asking if remote access via tablet is possible prior to commissioning. Us oldies are not necessarily the target market here! The road to remote access has not been without its bumps though. The security of some systems

has been called into question and a number of times this year the national media has featured scare stories about security. In November it hit the headlines that a Russian website was offering the ability to view images from network cameras such as webcams, baby monitors and some CCTV cameras. While this potential vulnerability in IP systems nothing new to many of us it highlights the disturbing lack of installers not changing default access codes. Speaking at the time of the media frenzy surrounding camera hacking the Chair of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), Pauline Norstrom, said: “We find that about half of the companies and organisations we talk to, large and small, don’t have adequate precautions. Sometimes it is a lack of awareness or simply a sloppy approach towards the security of their networks. Yet the results of being hacked can be catastrophic. “Installers need to guide their clients as many companies do not consider the issues and implications. The technology is there to prevent hacking. It is not overly complex to ensure networks are protected. Yet, the issue remains and we have not seen it diminish over the years.” Essentially the problem is occurring due to the fact that whoever is installing the cameras is not changing the passwords and ID names of units when putting them onto a network. In the same way that the telephone hacking was carried out by some media outlets using default codes, the Russian website gives the default details of some of the widely available cameras (such as ID: Admin, PIN: 0000) to give access to unsecured systems. It is vital that installers change these codes and, if

REMOTE ACCESS

For the installer there are benefits to offering remote access including recurring revenue and also the opportunity to carry out remote maintenance to systems possible, use a secured, dedicated network. Add to all of this the distress caused by people hacking into celebrity iCloud accounts and the subsequent negative publicity that came with it and there is a definite note of caution needed for anyone installing and using remote systems. Steve Riley of Risco explained to us at the time of the iCloud hacking event that if a system isn’t bought from a reputable manufacturer then it’s possible that remote alarm management via a smartphone or tablet could pose a threat to security: “I can’t speak for other alarm manufacturers but our panels are connected and can be remotely controlled through the Risco Cloud platform which is encrypted using AES128 encryption. Panels can only be operated remotely by a defined web user, their password and an access code from the physical alarm system. The chances that an autonomous hacker could gain control over a panel through a secure cloud enterprise system such as this is extremely low. “We do come across installers that are reluctant to embrace remote alarm management and to a point it is understandable. Cloud is relatively new term that is used everywhere at the moment and with any new technology like this there are always security concerns at the outset. The recent episode with iCloud accounts being hacked does not help with the general opinion about cloud systems being easy to compromise. Just like any other technology people need to be savvy about what they are doing and make sure that they have all of the suitable security measures in place. “Unfortunately now, because a handful of celebrities couldn’t choose proper passwords, the public feeling is that iCloud (and other cloud based systems) have a problem, when they don’t. It might be fair to say that we are now at the stage with the Cloud as we were with IP security a decade ago, when people were concerned about systems that were not ‘closed’ being accessed by unauthorised persons. If the Cloud is installed and used properly there are virtually no security risks,” he said.

34

So safeguards are required to ensure mobile devices are reliable and minimize false alarms when operated. Clarification in this area could come from amendments to PD6662 and/or BS 8243. But security issues aside the market for remote monitoring via hand held devices is here and growing rapidly. A large number of launches at IFSEC 2013 and 2014 were around the remote access of security equipment and now that the home automation market is establishing itself with the likes of British Gas and others offering methods for remote control of heating etc, the inclusion of security into the mix is an obvious one. For the installer there are benefits to offering remote access including recurring revenue and also the opportunity to carry out remote maintenance to systems. This could severely cut down on your mileage - driving to and from sites. Utilising the Cloud for these purposes is a good idea but the spectre of security is always there, and not just the possibility of people losing their smartphone as Clym Brown of Texecom told us recently: “Cloud-based services in particular are relatively easy to offer if security and data protection is not the core concern. However for professional security services, integrity is an imperative and high quality professional providers should invest heavily in ensuring the highest levels of data protection. Some current offerings are more secure than others, and I suspect that the industry can do more to guarantee the integrity of services on offer.” CCTV is increasingly being linked to the Cloud for off-site storage and this is giving customers the opportunity to view footage as and when they like without the need to be on site. However, in the same way that people used to be concerned about the security of running surveillance data across IP, accessing and controlling alarms and cameras via a hand held device needs to done properly if it is going to be beneficial. The actual benefits for the customer are clear, and as we have heard, are desired so this is a market on the up. The appeal of instant notification via email or SMS added to the ability to verify any alarm via video footage has a benefit to all parties in the security process – as long as the process is secure.

INSIDE STORY

ANPR with intelligence he new cameras enable the concurrent detection of number plates from a greater variety of models, capturing number plates from different countries (or states) on the same system. In addition users can also benefit from access to new vehicle behaviour and characteristic analytics, and the ability to deploy up to four high-resolution ANPR cameras on a vehicle, for near-360° capture. The Sharp and SharpX can analyse a scanned vehicle to identify its make and the number plate state or country of origin. The direction and speed of vehicles can also be detected with a single ANPR camera, allowing controllers to collect and review trends over time and automatically detect suspicious behaviours. "We believe that the value of ANPR extends beyond number plate analysis, and our latest generation of AutoVu Sharp and SharpX cameras is a gateway that offers those extended features for identifying vehicle trends and patterns,” said Stephan Kaiser, AutoVu General Manager, Genetec. “Whether in a city setting or on a private property, the analytics in the Sharp and SharpX introduce important new methodologies for detecting complex automotive behaviours, along with new data mining possibilities," added Kaiser. The SharpX is also now available in a new portable mobile kit, containing up to four cameras, a pre-wired processing unit and all necessary cables, allowing users to move their ANPR equipment rapidly from one vehicle to another as required. PSI CAUGHT UP WITH STEPHEN KAISER TO FIND OUT MORE:

T

Genetec has announced the next generation of its IP-based automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, the AutoVu Sharp and AutoVu SharpX

How do the cameras/analytics vary from previous versions? The latest generation SharpX ANPR unit provides greater processing power, giving us the flexibility to support up to four VGA ANPR cameras or two XGA ANPR cameras on a processing unit with a single processing module, decreasing the overall TCO. This additional power also provides us with long-term flexibility so that we can continue to add new analytics, improve country specific contexts and make other enhancements.

Are the new analytics functions created as a result of user feedback/research? Customer feedback is an integral part of our approach to product development. To extend

36

ANPR’s value we have looked at customer needs related to traffic management, vehicle access control and other scenarios involving vehicles. Single-speed camera estimation, for example, was developed to address multiple customer needs, from traffic management to security awareness. Including this analytic within our ANPR cameras provides additional value to customers, who might have only been looking at ANPR for list-matching purposes. Customers previously had to deploy dedicated equipment to gather data on vehicles’ speed and direction. With our new ANPR cameras, they can gather this information alongside license plate reads, without deploying additional equipment.

Do you see any differences in the use of analytics across the globe? Some countries, such as the United Kingdom, have been leveraging ANPR for law enforcement purposes for a long time, and are now pushing for advanced and creative uses of ANPR – from dynamic congestion charging to traffic management. That said, we also see a lot of interest for advanced analytics and data mining features from emerging markets, who are trying to balance accelerated motor pool growth with sustainable city planning.

What are the non-law enforcement uses of the cameras? (ie apart from police applications) ANPR is increasingly part of a city’s fabric. Beyond assisting law enforcement to detect wanted or stolen vehicles, ANPR has the potential to enhance traffic management such as optimising vehicle flow. ANPR is also helping private entities to automate vehicle access control. One of the main market segments we address is the Parking Enforcement space. We are seeing more and more demand for ANPR in parking to increase efficiencies and provide a better customer experience, combining ANPR with analytics for Parking is proving valuable to a lot of our customers. Other markets where ANPR can be of value include gaming establishments, hotels and entertainment venues where ANPR can notify staff of the arrival of guests and VIPs, while directing guests to reserved parking. Retail establishments also use ANPR to track returning patrons, identify where customers originate from, and record delivery vehicles’ arrival and departure times. And, with our unified platform combining video surveillance and ANPR within a single interface, all these applications can be enhanced with live and recorded video footage.

Honeywell launches a discreet alarm panel with GPRS connectivity in Le Sucre

Discreet home protection D eveloped in response to home owner needs, Le Sucre from Honeywell is a wireless panel with wireless TAG reader and wireless sensors, which operate at 868 MHz European frequency. It provides a range of more than 1000 metres open space and integrates a GPRS module for alarm transmissions and notifications. According to the manufacturer, Le Sucre greatly increases the speed and quality of installations with all of the peripherals in the range linked by radio, so no cables are needed to connect to the alarm panel, resulting in timesaving and no disturbance to the decor of the installation site. This means that each peripheral can be located in such a way as to ensure transmission, which not only saves time but also ensures system reliability. Le Sucre is designed to unobtrusively integrate into today’s stylish interiors and can be placed anywhere in the home. The system can be installed in a discreet location making it difficult for any intruder to find. Le Sucre’s ease of use is reported to avoid any operating errors. For example, the TCC800M keyfob gives the user direct control of the system’s status (set / unset), avoiding the need to return to the alarm panel to check the status before going out. Le Sucre includes a wireless visual verification feature which allows to see what is happening if an alarm is activated. The home owner can distinguish immediately whether an intrusion has occurred or if it is a false alarm. Total Connect 2.0E and Honeywell Cloud Services allow the user to view the images on a smartphone or PC as well as to arm or disarm the system remotely. Smoke or carbon monoxide gas can trigger an audible alarm and the built-in siren of the devices or the optional indoor siren informs the house occupants enabling them to react quickly. PSI CAUGHT UP WITH DOMINIQUE GAUTHIER OF HONEYWELL TO FIND OUT MORE:

What are the upselling opportunities with Le Sucre? Le Sucre self-monitoring wireless intruder alarm provides our channel installer network with a great opportunity to target homeowners with a reliable and cost-effective security system from a trusted brand, and develop a parallel revenue

stream with a new installed base. In the medium to long term, Le Sucre can act as a real door opener, enabling installers to easily generate sales leads by potentially “upselling” homeowners to the Domonial wireless security and safety system connected to a central monitoring station with Police response. When installed in homes, Le Sucre will provide excellent new sales opportunities for installers for many years to come, as Honeywell plans to provide new peripherals and services in all areas of the Connected Home space on a regular basis.

The GPRS is free for two years. Why did you choose a two-year period? The SIM card is a concern for many installers and homeowners. Not only due to the cost aspect, but also because the installer must carefully test the network coverage and install the most suitable GPRS operator depending on the area were the system is located. On this will depend the quality of the communication between the system and the Total Connect web application for many years to come. The SIM card offering GPRS roaming connectivity together with Honeywell Cloud Services is pre-paid/included in the price of Le Sucre for two years. This period is in line with many GSM phone operators providing bundled offerings including equipment together with all relevant associated services.

There is a range of peripherals for Le Sucre. How did you decide which systems to put in the range? Honeywell did an extensive qualitative market study in the UK and across Europe to select the best initial products to serve the Connected Home space. Other products will follow in the future.

The system has been available for a while in Europe. How has it been received? Le Sucre has been available for a while in the UK and Europe with Honeywell Security Group Key Account customers. It has been very well received, has opened a new segment in Connected Home, and has at the same time boosted sales in the traditional security and safety market. Consequently, we have decided to make this offering available to installers to ensure that they can propose the best Connected Home offering to their customers and generate incremental revenue opportunities. www.honeywell.com/security/uk

OPINION

Moving beyond PSIM John Davies of TDSi looks at the evolution of security system integration and how PSIM has fared

PSIM has been highly successful in bringing together physical and logical security systems, but the expectations on integration have grown significantly as well

40

few years ago PSIM (Physical Security Information Management) became a popular buzzword in both the physical and logical security sectors. In its broadest sense, the term sought to describe the increasing unification between IT security and physical security systems, which became inevitable with the increased adoption of IP services throughout business and society as a whole. In the case of physical security, this phenomenon has revolutionised the approach the industry takes to its products and services. Manufacturers, specifiers and installers have had to adapt and evolve to meet the expectations of the market (and in many cases, the wider public). However, the security sector as a whole has moved on and the expectation of an IP connection is now simply a basic necessity rather than a defining characteristic. Full integration between often complex and crucial systems is now the goal of security operators and providers alike. Paradoxically, whilst the technology is undoubtedly becoming more and more complex, the overall goal is to provide operators and installers with solutions that are actually simpler to use and install.

A

Bringing together all the elements PSIM has been highly successful in bringing together physical and logical security systems, but the expectations on integration have grown significantly as well. The security market now demands more joined-up physical security technology. Common integration components include access control, cctv, intruder, building systems, firesystems, business systems etc. Whilst physical and logical security were traditionally isolated from one another, equally many of the individual physical security and management applications were too. The inability of these various facets to work directly together was a frustration when it was clear that the overall management of a facility could be enhanced and made considerably simpler and more efficient by doing so. Bringing together the various elements has been made achievable by two improvements – • The ability of many security and management systems to be connected to a universal Internet connection, • The development of systems and software which are capable of administering and simplifying the operator’s task of running multiple functions from a single portal. True security integration has only really been made possible with the advent of systems which are highly compatible with one another (often using shared/agreed standardised protocols) and offer the ability to network these previous disparate elements. The second hurdle has been to understand the popular standards and to create software systems which are able to bring the strands together as a whole.

Surveillance and control Whilst security systems are traditionally used to combat intruders and protect against attacks or thefts, some organisations actually face a substantial threat from what is sometimes termed ‘insider theft’. Modern integrated security systems can be used as an effective deterrent against such threats. Take the example of a busy warehouse. With items being moved in and out rapidly, it can be easy for a worker to remove items (especially small ones) without necessarily being noticed by colleagues or human security operators. In this example CCTV surveillance may not be enough to detect a problem alone, however in combination with an integrated stock taking system and monitoring of access to the facility it is much easier to investigate unaccounted losses and to check video footage for the missing items. Equally, it can be a powerful tool to defend the honesty of staff members where there is suspicion or doubt. Visual verification With a truly integrated combination of security and business/building control systems there are fresh opportunities to use these existing investments. A good example of this is the administration of facilities management resources. Visual verification from CCTV and security software systems can be used to monitor the movement of authorised staff as well as intruders. A practical application for this could be the intelligent use of environmental temperature control and lighting. An integrated security system can detect the use of designated areas within a facility and intelligently manage the use of resources, especially outside normal working hours, to reduce any wastage in unoccupied areas. Equally this visual verification technology could be used to monitor human and vehicular traffic around a facility to analyse any congestion or to influence planning decisions. Emergency situations and fires Integrated systems can also play an important role with regards to safety of people on site. Fire alarms are far from a new technology, however when used in combination with all the other buildings control systems, the combined solution can play a vital role in safety. In the event of a fire the alarm will probably be the first system to activate. In a modern integrated system this can alert the security team and if required automatically escalate the warning to the emergency services. Proactively it can automatically restrict access to dangerous parts of the building and consult HR records or check ID restricted access logs to see who has entered and left the facility - providing a more accurate account for the emergency services and security teams to assess the situation. CCTV systems can then be used to assess if people are trapped within the facility and even to investigate dangerous areas and the spread of the emergency, without putting lives at risk. For organisations that run strict timekeeping and shift-based business models security systems can be used to administer accurate time and attendance recording. Secure access control records when staff enter or leave a facility as well as enforcing security. It can also measure when staff visit different parts of the facility (for example the WC or food service areas) to ascertain an accurate record of the actual working patterns. When also linked to CCTV and logical access of IT systems, the HR department or security operators can see exactly what is happening. Legacy systems and ROI Intelligently installed integrated physical security systems can offer an attractive return on investment. Firstly they allow the ‘mix and match’ purchase of systems to best suit requirements and budgets. Secondly, they allow the use of existing legacy systems and the inclusion of components that are either very specific to their role or financially would be problematic to replace. A good example is the use of CCTV cameras, where the best solution may be a healthy mix of modern megapixel cameras are other legacy or specific environment systems. In the past it would have been harder to use different specifications of camera on the same network but integrated systems are specifically designed to cater for this eventuality.

Greater flexibility Whilst PSIM has undoubtedly bridged the gap between physical and logical security, the developments that have taken place since have, arguably, been more helpful to security operators and installers. The connection of physical security to IP-based systems was a vital development in the security industry as a whole, but the synergy between physical systems is bringing the evolution of truly self-aware solutions even closer. Traditionally organisations and installers dealt with a complete solution which was mutually exclusive to other solutions and offered little in the way of upgrades and evolution options. Making any changes required serious contemplation and often involved large budgetary commitments that were often untenable. The combination of physical security and IP systems has also radically altered the installer market. Installation specialists increasingly have to understand both IT and physical security disciplines to offer the best solutions to clients, but the trade-off is that as an industry the security sector is able to grow and offer exactly the solutions that customers require. Security customers now have greater control over their investments and a greater confidence that it is a wise investment in a wider economic landscape that is achieving sustained growth again.

Door entry installation success at Beaufort Park omelit Group UK has teamed up with St George PLC, part of the Berkeley Group, to design and supply a door entry system for Beaufort Park, a mixed-use development in North London consisting of residential and commercial buildings. The site required a system capable of operating over long distances while still being cost-effective to install. This requirement made Comelit’s 2-wire Simplebus technology ideal for the project. The development comprises 24 individual blocks, each with its own bespoke stainless steel colour video digital entrance panel, integrated proximity reader and audio unit with a call button for two-way communication with the central concierge. Utilising Cat5e cabling, each dwelling is linked to a central switchboard located in one of the buildings – with no additional twin cable needed to power the monitor. So far, a total of 1,466 apartments have been completed with various entry phones from Comelit’s range, including Genius, Planux and

Studio invests in IP surveillance Samsung Techwin video surveillance technology is helping create a safe and secure environment for all who work on a site which first opened to the world of film in 1913. Situated in South West London, Twickenham Studios offers a bespoke service to all media, including film and television. Despite working on films, such as ‘The Others’, ‘Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ and ‘The Iron Lady’, the Studios went into administration and in 2012 seemed destined for demolition. However, following a successful Save Twickenham Studios’ campaign, the site was purchased by British businessman and property magnate Sunny Vohra, who quickly implemented a multi-million pound plan to modernise and re-equip the Studios. With the need to ensure that valuable production equipment and other assets will not be an easy target to would-be thieves, Carl Childs, Head of Engineering for Twickenham Studios was tasked to source a video surveillance system that would allow the monitoring of all activity throughout the studio. “The cost implications of having to replace equipment can be significant, but equally important was the need to safeguard against any disruption to film production and to verify 100% compliance with the Studio’s strict health and safety procedures.” With the assistance of Aray Architects, a tender process resulted in Securebase being awarded the contract to install a 28 camera IP network based system. Dariush Hekmat, Director of Securebase said: “We needed to install and commission the system within one week. Our ability to complete the project on time was enhanced by Twickenham Studio’s engineering department overseeing the 42

Planux Lux. While some of the distances from the entrance panel to the concierge exceed 800 metres, this challenge was overcome using 2-wire technology, which enables long-distance connectivity across the entire development when distributed across several building risers. Unlike polarised cables that have limited functionality, this non-polarised alternative can be used in any direction. As with all new housing developments nowadays, St George was also required to offer affordable housing alongside market-priced housing in order to achieve more balanced communities, income levels and social mix. Comelit was therefore asked to supply a variety of internal monitors from its range to suit the differing specifications of each individual apartment. Comelit’s Genius monitor was used for the entry-level apartments, with Planux and Planux Lux for the higher-end units, all of which work seamlessly on Simplebus. Francesca Boeris, Comelit’s UK Sales Director, said, “Due to the simplicity of Simplebus, we were able to meet and exceed the requirements stipulated by St George. Specifically, we were able to supply a system that was robust, flexible and most importantly, allowed for a cost-effective and easy installation.” professional installation of an IP network infrastructure before we arrived on site. With the Samsung Techwin featuring POE (Power over Ethernet), installation time was further reduced as this negated the need to install power points at each camera location.” 27 of the installed cameras, which are equipped with Samsung Techwin’s Open Platform WiseNetIII DSP chipsets, are capable of capturing 2MP Full HD (1080P) images when the lighting level is as low as 0.01 Lux and have a frame rate of 60fps which results in latency free clear images. Thirteen of these cameras are SNO-6084R weather resistant bullet cameras, 10 are SNV-6084R vandal resistant dome cameras and 4 are SND-6084R internal dome cameras. All are day/night cameras with motorised varifocal lens and have built in IR LED illuminators. An SNF-7010 360-degree 3 megapixel camera has also been installed at a specific location at the Studio where a large number of standard cameras would normally be required to monitor such a large area without any blind spots. The images from all 28 cameras are simultaneously recorded on a Samsung Techwin SRN-1000 network video recorder which has 12 terabyte on-board storage capacity, enabling Carl and other authorised personnel, to quickly retrieve recorded video evidence of any suspicious activity. “By investing in a future proof IP network based video surveillance system that can be expanded at any time if our requirements change, we have put in place a highly effective tool which should help us to protect our assets and maintain a welcoming, as well as safe environment, for many years to come for everyone who visits or works at the Studios,” said Carl.

Royal Spa Centre upgrades FD&A system Gent by Honeywell has installed S-Quad Visual Alarm Devices (VADs) in Leamington Spa’s entertainment venue, the Royal Spa Centre. The theatre and cinema, owned by Warwick District Council, recently upgraded its entire fire detection and alarm (FD&A) system to an integrated Gent Vigilon Compact solution that incorporates more than 50 S-Quad VADs throughout the multi-use building. Warwick Council had expressed interest in the use of the technology during the initial meetings with system integrator, Fire Safe Services. Steven Dowell, Fire Safe Services said: “The existing FD&A system had a three minute delay utilising beacon only devices. As the Royal Spa Centre is a public building that is in continuous use, Warwick Council felt it was important to use the latest visual alarm technology to protect the hundreds of visitors, its employees and the historic building. “The solution we installed incorporated Gent’s S-Quad VADs with voice sounders and we programmed the system to keep the three minute delay. During the first alert, the specific solution was set to trigger key individual beacons throughout the building to act as a staff alert. After the three minute delay, or in the event of a second device being activated, the system was then programmed to give a full evacuation signal, so all of the VADs will activate and the sounders would be used to advise occupants to leave the building.”

Healthy hedonism now safe and secure PEL Services has completed the installation of fire alarm, intruder alarm, CCTV and access control systems at The Third Space’s Soho health club. The Third Space delivers what is described as a new form of “healthy hedonism”, adopting an integrated approach by bringing together the best experts and facilities to cater for all requirements in exercise, health, medicine, nutrition, and fun. As part of the building and refurbishment project at the London venue, PEL Services undertook work to design, install and commission security and fire alarm systems to protect the considerable investment. PEL installed an internal CCTV system throughout the premises featuring day / night 44

NNUH upgrades access control Faced with a healthcare facility that included independent buildings and car parks, the building owner identified that the current legacy access control solution was coming to the end of its life cycle and was in need of future proofing to provide monitoring of entrances, exits and other sensitive areas ensuring a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. Site facilities management company Serco Group along with installation partner Check Your Security conducted an Enterprise Audit Report (EAR) of the existing TDSi 379-door access control solution. The report provided the stakeholders with an asset register and conditional appraisal as well as highlighting system improvements. It also offered independent advice on the security industry trends and key available migration paths. Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) elected to install and upgrade to the latest TDSi integrated access control platform; this included new EXpert 4 IP controllers and EXprox readers, which were combined with the newly-released EXgarde Management Software 4.2 in a virtualised environment. The integrated system enables NNUH to quickly identify all areas on site, including specific live events where security can respond appropriately, whether this be a suspicious person or hazardous condition, they can react faster and more effectively. cameras that automatically change from colour images to night vision when the light levels drop below a certain threshold. In the swimming pool area the camera has been fitted with a very wide angle lens to ensure complete coverage of the area with one device. In the new reception, cameras have been integrated with a panic button facility for added security and reassurance. The entire CCTV system is recorded 24 hours a day. A networked electronic proximity access control system has been fitted to a newly relocated Medical Centre. The system allows for authorised staff to come and go freely but prevents others from entering without permission. PEL designed the system to be easily expandable (up to 200 doors), so it can be extended to cover other areas of the Club as and when the remaining phases of the refurbishment are completed. The intruder alarm system was also upgraded. The existing fire alarm system at the Club was a closed protocol system, considered to be restrictive. In line with general industry leaning, PEL replaced the entire system with an open protocol addressable system that is more flexible and accommodates a wider choice of equipment, including specialist devices and control panels.

Ryder Cup success for IP security Boston Networks designed, delivered and maintained the network infrastructure and IP security solution for The Ryder Cup in 2014. Designed to provide a fully resilient network backbone, the communications network facilitated the tournament and will remain as a legacy network at Gleneagles, adding value to the resort. The solution deployed an IP security solution to provide 24/7 protection of the golf course in the pre-event weeks, to preserve the course ahead of the competition and a further system to provide complete event surveillance, to support public and player safety over all practice and

competition days. To ensure the course was protected and critical event preparations were uninterrupted, full course protection surveillance was adopted to monitor all areas of the course in the lead up to the event. Using infra-red IP surveillance cameras, the entire course was monitored and footage transmitted to multiple locations, via the cabling infrastructure for simplified control by on-site security staff. The deployment of this solution ensured that anti-social behaviour and vandalism and deterred and critical assets were protected during the event preparations During the tournament the IP security system ran across the on-course network and provided megapixel views of all areas of the course, as well as the key public transport routes leading to Gleneagles. Providing a complete visual overview of the course and key local transport locations, the security solution was designed with visitor movement in mind and encompassed HD IP cameras, providing 30x optical zoom and pan/tilt performance for wide area coverage and detail when zooming. All surveillance footage was transmitted in real time, via the IP network infrastructure, to the main operations centre, to a video wall to provide complete situational awareness.

Vandal-resistant HD IP camera

The DDF4820HDV-DN from Dallmeier is a HD network camera built into a vandal-resistant (IK10) dome enclosure. It provides real-time Full HD video (1080p/30) using the H.264 codec and supports resolutions up to 3megapixel. Besides automatic and manual image optimisation functions and other setting options, it features automatic Day/Night operation supported by integrated ambient light sensing and a removable IR cut filter (ICR). In addition, the camera is equipped with a fast (large maximum aperture) and motordriven P-Iris megapixel varifocal lens (F1.2 – F2.3 / 3 – 9 mm) which allows for the adjustment and configuration of the zoom, focus and iris via the web browser. The P-Iris control technology, designed for a precise and automatic adjustment of the optimum aperture, is reported to realise an improved image quality compared to conventional DC auto iris lenses under almost all lighting conditions. In conjunction with the Digital Image Shift function, which provides for a subsequent digital fine alignment of the image section, installation of the camera is straightforward. www.dallmeier.com

IP speed dome with 30x zoom option Grundig’s 1080p IP speed dome range has a 30x optical zoom option. The speed dome, GCI-K2795P, has an IK10 vandal-resistance rating, IP66 weatherproof rating and operating temperature range of -40°C to +50°C. This makes it suitable for outdoor, rugged applications prone to extremes of weather and temperature. The GCI-K2795P speed dome features quad video streams. The high-resolution, 1920 x 1080p, 2MP stream is ideal for Full HD recording with lower resolution D1 or CIF video streams available for viewing on monitors or smartphones. H.264 and MJPEG compression modes ensure efficient video transmission and data storage, saving network bandwidth. Day/night functionality, with WDR, ensures high-quality video images are produced in the most challenging lighting conditions, such as severely backlit scenes or at night. The speed dome offers 400°/sec pan and tilt movement, with a minimum speed of 0.5°/sec for accurate dome positioning. The 30x optical zoom, complete with 12x digital zoom, enables operators to zoom in and follow events from a distance. The domes support ONVIF profile S integration, maximising compatibility with most leading control systems and VMS solutions. grundig-cctv.com

OFF THE WALL

CAUGHT ON CAMERA U must be joking Traffic police have released this footage of the moment a lorry driver performed a Uturn on the M6 Toll after driving the wrong way up an exit slip-road. Leonid Papachin was given a 15-week suspended prison terms and an 18-month driving ban for his actions. Apparently he got onto the Toll then realised he didn’t have the money to pay for it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbrMl_ZVBJ8

Spookin’ in the Girls’ Room This CCTV camera footage was shot in a hostel for girls on 15 Oct this year. According to poster Ghost World TV the video shows the moment that a ghost spirit appears while a girl was returning from a washing basin and, as she takes a few steps, the ghost pushes her very hard. She turns around surprised, but finds nothing there. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEnBsuhqmIE

Making a large withdrawal

As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world… How would you like to pay? This CCTV video shows a customer walking into Exotic Motor's showroom in Singapore then dumping more than $19000 worth of coins onto the floor. Apparently the money was meant to cover legal fees that were owed. The car dealer has refused to accept the coins, which he says smelled strongly of fish, and has taken the matter to court. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnJBSvSWSAI

Smashing service This footage, which we believe to have come from cameras at Matthew’s Yard café in Croydon, shows exactly how not to move a bar fridge with an unsupported shelf above it! The highly rated café experienced a shattering moment at the end of October as staff attempted a reshuffle behind the bar without checking what was holding up the glasses shelf. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIU6tGJrv-M

CCTV footage from inside this Leicestershire shop shows the moment a stolen telehandler was used to pull a cash machine off the wall to be later placed into the back of a waiting car. The raid on the Co-op in mid-November this year is believed to be linked to a number of other similar robberies in the county. www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9YCvUmskmQ
