Remember, our Traffic Court tried it, even put people in jail, only to be DECRIMINALIZED and they are no longer criminal; instead, they’re now C-I-V-I-L C-O-U-RT-S!

But it’s a blog on which I do some reporting, and that’s not something that most bloggers know how to do ... or even want to know how to do. There are a lot of folks blogging who believe the rules of journalism shouldn’t apply to them, but when you’re doing the electronic equivalent of my job, they should. Under the 1st Amendment, Congress ain’t allowed to make no laws constraining freedom of speech or freedom of the press. If Congress can’t do it, and they’re the Federal government, what makes you think that you can make reporters be licensed in your state, Sen. Patterson? In other words, no law

means just that, no law. I emphasize this because I know some Pennsylvania political will read this column and think, “That sounds like a good idea” and get a legislative aide on it right away. You can’t do it. It’s unconstitutional and the Pennsylvania Press Association will have you for dinner. But folks like Sen. Patterson can take heart. The St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Poynter Institute for Journalism Education and the Ford Foundation are doing some research on the topic of the so-called “Fifth Estate” and its impact. It’ll be interesting to see what they find out.
