GLOSSARY OF TERMINOLOGY appearances. A tail that is braided and then turned up so the hairs do not hang loose is called a “mud tail,” and is frequently used in damp weather conditions.
Jumper Divisions The classes in which jumper competition takes place. They are usually divided by height, age, and ownership specifications. The FTI WEF offers the following jumper divisions to competitors: Schooling, Pony, Children’s, Junior, AdultAmateur, Amateur-Owner, 1.30m, 1.35m, 1.30m, 1.45m, Young Jumpers, and Grand Prix Levels. The schooling jumper divisions are normally used as a training session for the horse and rider. All riders are allowed to compete in the schooling jumper division. Pony, Children’s, and Junior Jumpers are all separated by the height of the jump, the largest being the Junior Jumpers, and the smallest being the
Pony Jumper division. Horses compete in the Children’s and Junior Jumper divisions, whereas ponies compete in the Pony Jumper divisions. Riders in these three divisions must be under 18 years of age. Riders in the Amateur-Owner jumper divisions must be nonprofessionals over the age of 17, and must own the horse on which they compete. Riders in the Adult-Amateur jumper division must be non-professionals over the age of 17, but do not have to own the horse on which they compete. Young jumpers are restricted to the horses’ respective age groups, and are divided by 5 year olds, 6 year olds, 7 year olds, and 8 year olds.
