From Physics to Philosophy! Every summer, parents seek programs that are fun and meaningful learning experiences for their children. The UW Robinson Center for Young Scholars offers a variety of math, science, literature, philosophy, and writing classes for children in grades 5-10. Our academic programs provide an intensive, inspirational and in-depth learning experience that is renowned in the region. Classes are small, with faculty who are experienced teachers and specialists in their field. The program takes place in classrooms throughout the University of Washington Seattle campus.

SUMMER CHALLENGE

In Summer Challenge, children explore a variety of adventurous topics such as the physics of roller coasters, astronomy, architecture, and creative writing. The supportive collaborative learning environment is one that children remember for a lifetime. Summer Challenge (5th – 6th grade) emphasizes hands-on learning, field trips, and activities. Its goal is to provide motivated students with an intensive, hands-on, fun educational experience in areas outside of the traditional school curriculum. The program runs from July 9th – 27th, five days a week from 9:00AM – 2:20PM. There is also an After-Class program available from 2:20 - 4:30PM. There will be some homework, because of the breadth and depth of material covered. Registration opens March 1st at 8:00 am.

SUMMER STRETCH

Summer Stretch (7th – 10th grade) is more academic in nature, providing an accelerated, rigorous learning experience. The Summer Stretch program is characterized by high-level thinking, intellectual adventure, and pursuit of understanding. The program offers both condensed self-paced courses (e.g. Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Precalculus, Chemistry) and courses for enrichment (e.g. American Literature, Debate, Physics of Robotics). What all of these courses provide is an in-depth, intensive learning experience. The program runs from June 25th – July 26th, three days a week from 9:00AM - 2:20PM. Students must be committed to a substantial homework load; courses are graded and final transcripts are provided. Registration opens Feb 1st at 8:00 am.

RC ONLINE

RC Online (9th – 12th grade) is a new accelerated learning opportunity, bringing advanced college-prep curriculum to an online platform for high school students. RC Online provides an inspiring, expansive educational experience as a window into what college-level work will be like; to move students rapidly from novice to advanced writers, readers and thinkers via specific skills, practices and tools. These courses provide challenging curriculum without the logistical, economic and other barriers that come between a student and educational opportunity. Additional information can be found on our website. “The best one in the region for highly capable kids.” (Summer Challenge Parent) “Excellent! My daughter is already looking forward to next summer’s math class!” (Summer Stretch Parent)

dear reader

A Case for Boredom

W

henever I’d whine about being bored during summer break, my mom always said I’d miss it when I was older. Boy, was she right. As an adult, I miss those long, structureless days. I miss not having a to-do list. I miss being bored. In this issue, we advocate for many ways to keep your kid from being anything but bored this summer, from leadership camps they’ll love (p. 15) to camping as a family (p. 21). But even with such variety, I encourage you to schedule in a little boredom, too. Some of our readers’ best summertime memories happened because they were bored stiff as kids. You’ll read more about those on p. 31 but trust me, they’re all the proof you’ll need for a little unstructured fun this summer. However you celebrate the sunny season, we hope you’ll find something to do (or not do) thanks to this issue. Because of our production schedule, we write it in the winter, which makes its sun-soaked pages a fond reminder that the sun does still exist behind those rainclouds. So read on, have fun, get bored. — Elisabeth Kramer, Parentmap associate editor

planning

Create the Most Meaningful Summer for Your Child 8 tips for planning a summer rich in learning and low-key fun By Elisa Murray

A

h, the paradoxes of summer. We want it to be rich in uncomplicated fun — berry picking, beach hopping and backyard games. We want to chip away at that fabled summer bucket list. We also want to give kids the opportunity to explore interests that don’t fit into the jam-packed school year. And, of course, we still need to Get. Stuff. Done. Is it any wonder that summer in the Puget Sound region has a hard time living up to our outsize expectations? Here’s a secret that I’ve learned the hard way: A little summer planning goes a long way. Whether it’s for camps or trips, putting a stake in the ground in March is the thing that makes it happen in August (and saves money). Here’s how a few planning and program gurus fight that old enemy procrastination.

1 F igure out a few low-key goals I know, I know. Summer goals — what? But even if your goal is to make sure your kids have plenty of unscheduled, outdoor fun, it’s worth naming it. What other kinds of experiences are a priority? Hands-on learning? A creative approach to academics? Lots and lots of play? Is there a shared goal for the whole family (e.g., a vacation that’s truly unplugged)? Pro tip: Involve the kids early and often in planning. Post a big sheet of paper where everyone can write down ideas.

2 Get out the calendar Now start scheduling. Get a large-format paper calendar and pop in your “big rocks” — the big family vacations and other outings that are definitely happening. Pencil in some dreams, too: that group camping trip or first backpacking expedition. It’s the first step toward making it happen. If your kids are going to sleepaway camp, add that to the calendar as well, as that requires early planning. Pro tip: You can also schedule your unscheduled time. Want a week that’s dedicated to spontaneous outings? Block it out.

parentmap.com/summer

3 F ind a default camp If your kids need to be in camps all summer, it can be tempting to hop among camps. Seattle parent coach Sarina Behar Natkin warns against the different-camp-every-week strategy, especially for younger kids. “It’s like starting a new job every week,” she says. “You have to figure out where you go to the bathroom, where you eat, who you ask for your help.” She recommends identifying one or two “home base” camps, a familiar option that offers fun, flexibility and lots of coverage. Bonus points for affordability and being close to home. Good options include camps hosted by the child’s after-school program, the local

Boys and Girls Club, a YMCA branch or your local community center. Specialty camps with multi-week sessions also reduce transitions. Summer Fun is an affordable two-week theater camp. Quiet Heart Wilderness School in Edmonds offers a number of two-week sessions. This summer, Pacific Science Center has back-to-back sessions for a couple of its camps; kids can take one week of, say, Animation 101, followed by a second week of Animation camp at a more advanced level. The University of Washington offers two-week enrichment programs for kids of many ages. Pro tip: Many popular camps that are affordable and have broad coverage also fill up quickly, so mark down registration dates ASAP.

4 F ind a special specialty camp Once you’ve got the default camp, consider adding in a few specialty camps that your child is excited to try. The options can be overwhelming — rock climbing, fencing, archery, etiquette — so consider attending a local camp fair. (ParentMap offers four free >> ParentMap Summer 2018 • 9

planning How to Create the Most Meaningful Summer continued from page 9 Camp Fair events in February and March; get dates and details at parentmap.com/campfairs.) When you find a specialty camp that really resonates with your kid, consider a repeat performance. Last summer, when my then 7-year-old son was finishing his second year of a weeklong Wilderness Awareness School camp at Saint Edward State Park, he said to me, “I always get sad on the last day of camp.” Bingo.

If your kids do need specific academic help, try tutoring — and it doesn’t have to be a formal program. After her now 7-year-old son, Tommy, completed kindergarten, Seattle mom Lisa Chang hired two fourthgrade boys whom Tommy admired to tutor him in math and reading. Initially, Chang did much of the prep work for the sessions, but with time the older boys have taken on more responsibility and added their own spin. “[Tommy] was excited to go, and it kept him in practice during the summer with reading and math,” says Chang. And, she adds, the lowkey sessions have been a confidence booster for the older boys.

Pro tip: If you’re looking for a one-stop shop

for fun and enriching summer programs, also check out independent schools such as The Evergreen School and The Meridian School, which offer full-day coverage and a rich array of camps.

5 ‘ Scaffold’ to sleepaway camp Is sleepaway camp in your child’s future? If not, maybe it should be. Overnight camp can be an oasis of unplugged summer fun for kids, where they gain independence, learn new skills and meet new friends. “Our daughter comes back from three weeks more mature,” says Seattle mom Elise Gruber, who’s been sending her now 10-year-old daughter to an overnight camp for three years. “And the break we get from each other is important.” If you want your kid to attend sleepaway camp by age 10, start exploring options and perhaps book a “taster” camp or a family camp weekend to try a year or two beforehand. Pro tip: Overnight camps come in every

possible variety. Find a great starter list at parentmap.com/overnight.

7 S cout early for bargains

6 G et creative with academics Many families favor summer programs, such as those offered by The Museum of Flight and Pacific Science Center, which skip formal academics in favor of an exploratory, hands-on approach. You can also find more focused academic enrichment programs, such as the WISE camps out of Bellevue, Girls Rock Math or the Russian School of Mathematics.

What is the key to lining up any summer program? Early enrollment. Many camps offer early-bird discounts if you enroll by March or April. And if you want financial assistance, you need to apply early. “The sooner you have a financial assistance request in, the better,” says Leandra Shelton, youth services supervisor for Metro Parks Tacoma. Metro Parks offers hundreds of summer day camps, with financial assistance available to kids who qualify for free or reduced lunches. Pro tip: If day camp isn’t in your budget, your community may offer free drop-in programs

For example, Metro Parks Tacoma offers a free playground program, with lunch included, at six parks during the summer. Seattle offers a similar lunch/activity program, as well as free swimming lessons at local beaches. Also, keep free summer classes in mind. A couple to note: Apple stores offer free tech classes, and Microsoft stores offer free YouthSpark coding classes year around.

8 L earning is everywhere Andy Shouse, chief program officer for nonprofit Washington STEM, can tick off the benefits of attending day camps. But the dad of two is also a champion for helping parents realize that everyday activities — especially in the summer, when life is less rushed — are a great tool for learning, especially STEM skills. Grocery shopping, road trips, camping: It’s all fodder. “There are so many ways to gather and organize data and information,

Wilderness Awareness School

Not surprisingly, the Pacific Northwest boasts a bevy of amazing wilderness camps, but did you know that many of them also teach leadership skills? With the beauty of nature as a backdrop, students can safely gain confidence by practicing team building and effective communication in a hands-on way, all while enjoying the great outdoors. “Whether it’s in our survival or wilderness camps, I’ve seen kids grow in their own self-awareness,” says Sam Bowman, summer programs coordinator at the Wilderness Awareness School. “Kids [start] paying attention to what the group needs. They realize that it’s not just about them as an individual.” parentmap.com/summer

Ages: 11–17 Recognized for years by ParentMap as the one of the premier nature camps in our area, this school offers overnight and day camps for middle schoolers and teens in everything from wilderness survival to wolf tracking. In addition to honing kids’ outdoor skills, the school also focuses on healthy risk taking and teamwork.

Rite of Passage Journeys Ages: 12–15 This organization offers expedition trips called “Mountain Quest: Coming of Age” for boys and girls ages 12–14 (15 for boys), all set in the forests and on the waterways of western Washington. The trips are separated by gender and led by a team of experienced wilderness mentors. Kids are welcomed into a supportive community. Participants “safely experience the physical challenges of demanding mountain backpacking as well as the interpersonal themes of self-reliance, responsibility to self and others, group dynamics and conflict resolution.”

Go global

Rustic Pathways

Time to make sure that passport is up to date! Many local organizations offer programs for kids to travel abroad. One, Rustic Pathways, promises to “facilitate life-changing educational experiences” by combining travel with philanthropy. Its goal? To “make a positive impact on the communities in which we work.”

Ages: 12–18 Several programs offer opportunities for kids to provide various hours of community service or conservation in exotic settings. Trips range from 10 to 14 days, and, as the name indicates, conditions are pretty basic. A couple of the trips offered this summer: saving turtles in Costa Rica, and working with school-age children in Fiji.

OneWorld Now Ages: 12–18 Through a variety of opportunities to study abroad, students experience immersion learning and community service. Plus, they build friendships with students from around the world. Destinations on the docket this summer include South Korea, Russia and China. >>

Taking the Family to Camp

Sleepaway camp might be even better when you do it together Edited by ParentMap staff

P

am Christensen and her husband were so interested in the family camp experience that they started attending one before they had kids. They chose Cascades Camp and Conference Center, a Christian-oriented camp in the foothills of Mount Rainier. “It was a lot of fun because we could do whatever we wanted,” Christensen jokes. After the Shoreline, Washington, couple had their two boys, the family made attending Cascades’ five-day Independence Day family camp an annual tradition. They fish, boat, ride horses and hike as a family; enjoy camp traditions such as Parents Night Out (kids watch a movie; parents eat a relatively elegant meal together); and celebrate camp milestones, such as the year both boys were old enough that the entire family could do a trail ride together, and the year their oldest scaled the 25-foot climbing wall without a hitch.

parentmap.com/summer

Now that the boys are older, the family pursues a mix of joint and separate activities. “I know the staff is there with them and they’re safe, so I can go [relax] on a bench and read a book,” says Christensen. And the combination of quality, unplugged family time with a break from daily chores, she says, is unbeatable — especially the “killer food” cooked by someone else. “It’s a beautiful thing.” The Christensens probably didn’t know it, but they were on the cutting edge of a growing trend. While family camps have been around as long as summer camps have (wasn’t “Dirty Dancing” set at a family camp of sorts?), in recent years, says former American Camp Association CEO Peg Smith, the biggest growth in camp clientele has been for family camps. >>

“ Compared to other vacations in gorgeous settings with a similar range of activities, family camp is often a bargain.”

Year-round tours are available at Safeco Field, the spectacular home of the Seattle Mariners. The 19.59 acre outdoor ballpark features real grass, a retractable roof and state-of-the-art amenities. Bring your camera and take a “behind the seams” tour including areas normally restricted to the public such as the Press Box, Owners Suite, Field, Dugouts, Visitors Clubhouse, All-Star Club, and more. (All areas of the ballpark are subject to availability based on ballpark activities.)

BIRTHDAY PARTIES Parents should enjoy their child’s birthday party as much as the kids…and you can…when you host it at Safeco Field! The lineup includes a ballpark tour with stops on the field and at the playground, food and festivities in a group suite, and a final surprise with your child’s name on the Out-of-Town Scoreboard. For extra fun, add a Mariner Moose appearance or test your skills at the batting cage. The only thing to worry about with this party is how you will top it next year.

family camp Taking the Family to Camp continued from page 21

From babies to 90-year-olds

One of the most common types of family camp is a traditional sleepaway camp that schedules several weekends or weeks each season for family sessions. Families can usually choose from a variety of lodgings (cabins, tents, yurts, lodges; shared bathroom or private) and meal options (make your own, eat family style with other campers). There is a wide range of activities: sports, canoeing, horseback riding, zip lines, crafts, camp games, songs, skits. Unlike summer camp, participation in activities is often optional. (Yes, you can lounge while others tear through camp activities.) While sleepover camps usually don’t accept kids until they’re in the first or second grade, families can typically bring children of any age to family camps. “We’ve had babies just a couple of months old and 90-year-old grandmas,” says Tim McElravy, camp services director for Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp, which has run several weekend family camps. He has seen interest in family camps increase; his staff has responded by adding sessions and activities, from theme nights to pirate treasure hunts to fishing derbies on the lake. >>

Find a Family Camp Interested in a traditional outdoor family camp? Use the American Camp Association’s Find a Camp database or ask your peeps. SEATTLE-AREA OPTIONS include Camp Orkila, a YMCA camp on Orcas Island; Camp Indianola; Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp; two local Girl Scout camps, Camp St. Albans and Camp Robbinswold; and Cascades Camp. The North Cascades Institute runs Family Getaway weekends at its beautiful lodge on Diablo Lake. IslandWood on Bainbridge Island offers similar options. Family camps can be a great way to EXPLORE A NEW AREA. Learn to surf at the Family Vacation Center’s weeklong beachside camp sessions in Santa Barbara, California. Stay in covered wagons by night and learn to ride horses by day at Cheley Colorado Camps near Estes Park, Colorado.

MUSIC- AND ARTSFOCUSED CAMPS range from festivals and workshops

with activities for kids, like The Kids Track at the American Festival of Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, to dedicated family camps, such as Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp, an offshoot of Cazadero Music Camps that offers two highly popular sessions of arts-focused family camps in California’s Russian River Valley. Or LEARN A LANGUAGE together. Canoe Island French Camp offers several family camp weekends. There are camps for kids with SPECIAL NEEDS, medical conditions or differences, such as Camp Sealth family camp and Camp No Limits, which has camps around the U.S. for kids who have lost a limb, and their families.

for a three-day family camp that includes meals and lodging.

Costs for family camps range widely, beginning at about $120 per adult ($80 per child)

And book as early as you can. Family camp sessions can fill up fast.

family camp Taking the Family to Camp continued from page 23 Why the interest? Families with younger kids are often looking to test-drive a sleepover camp, and end up coming back year after year as a family. Families with older kids are looking for ways to unplug and reconnect. And then there’s the cost factor. Compared to other vacations in gorgeous settings with a similar range of activities, family camp is often a bargain. YMCA Camp du Nord, for example, located on the edge of the stunning Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota. It runs family camps only, and it’s so popular that families have to enter a lottery in the fall to reserve a summer camp spot. “Who needs five-star hotels when you have a beautiful lake, canoes, kayaks, trails and fun people?” asks Jeanne Cochran, a Minnesota lawyer and mom who has been going to Camp du Nord with her family for eight years.

A camp for every camper The family camp experience exists in other forms beyond the traditional outdoor camp experience. You can rent a house and attend an event, such as the weeklong Fiddle Tunes Festival at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend. Although not described as a family camp, the festival is very family-oriented, with workshops for kids as well as adults, and many children attend year after year (and often quickly outshine the parents with their musical chops). Some families rent a house together on “campus,” and spend their days in a mix of shared and separate music workshops: such as

kid’s fiddle for the kids; mandolin for a motherson duo; guitar for Dad; fiddle for Mom. The rewards of the experience include a chance for the adults to learn from the kids. A music festival like Fiddle Tunes includes endless opportunities to “jam” with other attendees, a prospect that’s sure to create lasting memories. Pam Christensen knows. As her sons grow up, her family treasures their time at Cascades Camp even more. “As the kids get more involved in other things, it’s really great to have this time to do more than touch base at dinner at night,” she says. “Some of the conversations we’ve had at camp have been very funny, and very deep. “We have friends who still go with their grown kids. ... I hope that’s a tradition we share.” n

The Summer Program You Need to Know About Get the inside scoop on counselors-in-training

E

ver heard of CITs? They are counselorsin-training, and are typically kids between the ages of 12 and 16 who work at some of our area’s premier camps and programs to get on-the-job experience. Last summer, my 15-year-old daughter spent the better part of four weeks as a CIT at Camp Fire’s Camp Sealth on Vashon Island. She still raves about the experience.

“Being a CIT is great because you’re in the gray area: not quite a camper and not quite a counselor,” Caroline tells me. “And all that leadership stuff they did [with us]: A-plus!” Every CIT program is specific to the camp (you also might have heard the position called a “program aide” or “leader in training”); some require applicants to have previously attended the camp where

they’re applying. Although there’s no official tally of how many such programs exist in our area, chances are good your camp has one. Just look for information on leadership and teen opportunities on a camp’s website. This isn’t a paid job — which may be perfect if your kid isn’t quite ready for gainful employment but who still needs something to do this summer. Your teen may also may be required to pay to attend the camp; prices range from $25 for a weeklong day camp at the Boys & Girls Club to $2,800 for a monthlong overnight program at Camp Orkila on Orcas Island. To become a CIT, teens apply to the camp’s specific program. They’ll likely need personal references and to write about why they want to be a CIT (perfect training for those future college and job applications!). Encourage your kid to complete the application themselves, says summer camp director Carrie Lawson of Camp Fire Central Puget Sound. After all, being a CIT is about independence, she notes. >>

CIT Programs After completing Camp Don Bosco’s CIT training week ($500; ninth- through 12th-graders), CITs can work at weeklong camps ($100 fee per week). The CITs at Camp Fire’s Camp Sealth ($875 fee; rising 10th- and 11th-graders) spend four weeks (with two weekend breaks) on site, including a full week of living at camp, when

parentmap.com/summer

each CIT assists with one cabin group. The CIT programs at Boys & Girls Clubs of King County vary by locale (free with membership, except North Seattle and Broadview-Thomson, which is $25 per week). After participating in the YMCA’s Leader in Training week

($145–$165 fee for Leader in Training Week; ninth- through 12th-graders), kids have the opportunity to serve as CITs at their local branch camps ($15–$20 fee for each week). CITs in the Stroum Jewish Community Center CIT Program on Mercer Island ($105 fee; rising ninth- and 10th-graders) sign up on a week-by-week basis.

After girls complete a weeklong Program Aides Adventure Overnight program (prices from $536; seventh- and eighthgraders) at The Girl Scouts of Western Washington’s Camp River Ranch, they can serve as experienced program aides during day camp programs (fees from $252; seventh- through 10th-graders).

Summer Program continued from page 27 It’s also a good first step in the transition from being a camper to becoming paid staff, says Lawson. “The CIT moves from being an individual enjoying camp to understanding how can they can give back to the other kids attending camp,” she says. “How can they make sure someone else enjoys camp?” CIT programs teach teens leadership and how to work with children, she says, adding that CITs build self-confidence and learn

“ Being a CIT is great because you’re . . . not quite a camper and not quite a counselor.”

how to make decisions — both independently and as a team — and how to manage responsibility for themselves and for others. But it’s not all work. CITs get to enjoy the same activities they loved as campers, too. “[You also] grow a lot as a person, mostly [in] how you treat people,” says Anna Dingfield, a Camp Sealth CIT alumna. “I’m a different person than I was before my CIT experience.” n Nancy Schatz Alton is a Seattlebased freelance writer, editor and former camp counselor. memories

What’s your favorite memory of summer camp? These responses are from readers like you. They’ve been slightly edited for brevity and clarity. “ I was raised in a strictly kosher home but my mom sent my twin sis and me to a Christian camp. Two words: pork everyday. We couldn’t eat!” — Alayne Sulkin ParentMap publisher and CEO “ I learned how to do a perfect donkey call, as instructed by the fine shaggy fellow that stood right outside our cabin window every day at 6 a.m.” — Elisa Taylor ParentMap ad operations manager “ My favorite memory? Thinking ‘I wanna go home.’” — Emily Johnson ParentMap design and production

“ I got to make a clay pot on a potter’s wheel. I still have it. Camp was a long time ago but I would love to try to make another one.” — Katherine N. “ My best summer camp memory is playing Capture the Flag in the woods at the Firs Day Camp in Bellingham. I also loved the Thursday night sleepover when we got to sleep in these rustic, open air cabins that smelled like mildew — a smell that still reminds me of fun times at camp.” — Nancy Chaney, ParentMap Out + About editor “ The zipline. More specifically, being dared to go down only holding on with my hands and flying off the end into the bushes.” — Leann M.
