PRESENTING CURTIS EBERHARDT

Best known as a New York based photographer Curtis Eberhardt could be mistaken for about anyone, from a prominent banker to a night life punk. Tall, very composed and intense in stature, he enters the room with a strong literary announcement, taking grooming chances I never see on other photographers. Curtis’ short cropped white hair and flat Nordic face combined with close fitting clothes comes together on that intense person to remind you, on closer inspection, more of an early Ernest Hemmingway than of the soft styled casual scene makers of a typical New York photographic crowd. Curtis Eberhardt started out studying cinema and painting at the Art Institute of Chicago, and then later moving to NY and getting his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting at NYU. Painting awakened the interest in photography from an earlier stage in his life, and now he’s shooting fulltime: “- I was most influenced by studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and studying cinema and painting there, especially the cinematic work and teachings there of Stan Brakhage. The Avant Garde cinema world was very strong there and I try to convey a cinematic vision in my photographic work.” He is also inspired by the works of Steven Meisel, Guy Bourdin, William Eggleston, Edward Steichen, Sarah Moon, Deborah Turbeville and many of the predominately female fashion photographers he’s recently discovered on Flickr: “- There’s a certain female sensibility that seems consciously or unconsciously inspired by Deborah Turbeville and more recently Tim Walker and has been expanded upon. A lot of the work I’ve discovered there transcends being dependent on “fashion” for it to be relevant as art. I’m interested in work that’s timeless.” Curtis Eberhardt pictures, mainly featuring a young female movie star or upper crust fashion models, involve inspired fantasies which may lead him to build sensitively unique beautiful sets in the studio of some futuristic palace or he may shoot in front of a wonderful painting or lithograph others

have never appreciated. He works, in the traditional sense of a great photographer, without fear, discovering new ways to project attitude as part of the environment, as I believe, great American authors carve in their words. The photograph always have.some strong and literary content, unique in the subtle way or obliquely shocking, the light sways the impression of the model to give them the aesthetic edge. Curtis’ photos are always positive and exact; making the new world he imposes as a delight, and much in demand by those who honor the new beauty contexts without fear of the exhilaration of the future. His work has been featured in magazines such as Soma Magazine, Yes, Please, Squint, Harper’s Bazaar, Muse, Manhattan, Vanidad, Style Monte Carlo, Allure, Vogue, and many more. Recently he’s been shooting a lot of Mercura glasses, a brand that has been “getting a lot of attention lately with Elton John on the cover of Pop: - I shoot them a lot as I love the feeling they bring to any shoot -cool, hip, mysterious, fun and sophisticated all at the same time.” Curtis’ plans for the future are to keep pushing his sense of discovery and staying inspired, as well as finding interesting editorials and commercial jobs that are looking for a unique vision. He’s also exploring shoots that includes only him and the model: “- After so much work with high fashion and large teams I’m interested in the intimacy captured and revealed by the model when she’s alone, and I like the process of dialogue that leads to this.” The latest group with the new face of Brittany Hollis captures her looking as if she is unaware she is even being photographed, but Curtis has her wearing Mercura sunglasses and looking very much like a unique personality with a big story to tell. Somehow the wind and sky are translated into a particular type of light and shadow that have otherwise only been seen in Curtis Eberhardt environmental design.
