Manolaco: Dreaming of House Music

Η πρώτη γνωριμία έγινε σε ένα μικρό, υπόγειο, μπετονένιο club στη Ομόνοια όταν πίσω από τα decks δημιουργούσε

The first meeting happened in a small, underground, concrete club in Omonia when on the decks he was creating his own clubbing mysticism. The second contact was in this studio where cuddling with his cat Bongo he described why he loves music as much as sunsets.

OZON Ποιο είναι το τελευταίο όνειρό σου που θυμάσαι έντονα; MANOLACO Είδα έναν εφιάλτη χθες βράδυ, το μόνο που θυμάμαι είναι να λέω, όλα τα κακά σκορπά!

O Ποιο είναι το πιο ωραίο πάρτυ που έχεις πάει;

M Το αξέχαστο after party του φεστιβάλ Time Wrap το οποίο έχει όλους τους techno καλλιτέχνες παγκόσμιου βεληνεκούς, στο Das Zimmer Mannheim.

Ήμουν 34 χρονών αν θυμάμαι καλά, έπαιζε ο Joseph Capriati και με έκανε να δακρύσω, η μουσική, η παρέα, το μέρος. Eίχα ανατριχιάσει. Άλλο ένα πάρτυ χαραγμένο στη μνήμη μου ήταν στο Cavo Paradiso.

O Ποιο είναι το επαγγελματικό σου όνειρο; M Να βγάλω τη μουσική μου εκτός της Ελλάδας. Να παίξω στο Space club στο Μαϊάμι.

O Τι ονειρευόσουν ως παιδί; M Μικρός ονειρευόμουν ότι πηδούσα από τον τέταρτο και προσγειωνόμουν ασφαλής. Επίσης, είχα την ικανότητα να πετάω και πήγαινα όπου ήθελα. Πετούσα και μου άρεσε να βλέπω τοπία.

O Έχουν αλλάξει τα όνειρά σου από τότε;

M Ναι, δεν πετάω, δεν πηδάω. Τα όνειρά μου είναι λίγο πιο ρεαλιστικά. Νομίζω ότι τα όνειρα πια με καθοδηγούν. Είναι σα σκέψεις που έχουν περάσει από το μυαλό μου και τις έχω αναλύσει αλλά δεν τις θυμάμαι. Με το όνειρο μιλάει το υποσυνείδητο και δεν λέει ποτέ ψέματα. Όπως και τα ηλιοβασιλέματα.

O

Ονειρεύεσαι αλλες μουσικές;

M Θυμάμαι να ονειρεύομαι μαγαζιά που έχω παίξει ή δεν έχω παίξει. Μικρός σπούδαζα σε ωδείο ακορντεόν και δεν μου άρεσε και ονειρευόμουν να παίξω αλλά όργανα, όπως κιθάρα ή μπουζούκι.

O Πώς ονειρεύεσαι το εαυτό σ το μέλλον; M Όπως είμαι τώρα. Θέλω να μείνω όπως είμαι τώρα. Ευτυχώς, το επάγγελμα μας βοηθάει γιατί είμαστε σε επαφή με τις νέες γενιές, με νέους DJ και νομίζω ότι υπάρχει και μια σχέση υποστήριξης.

O Πώς είναι η clubbing σκηνή της Αθήνας; M Πολλά μαγαζιά, πολύ καλλιτέχνες έρχονται από το εξωτερικό, αλλά δεν ακούει πολύς κόσμος ηλεκτρονική μουσική. Από την άλλη, όσο αυξάνεται ο κόσμος που ακούει house μουσική, χάνεται το underground στοιχείο και γίνεται mainstream. Τώρα underground θεωρείται το hard techno.

OZON What was the last dream you remember?

MANOLACO I had a nightmare last night, and the only thing I remember was “evil, be gone!”

O What was the best party you have ever been to?

M The unforgettable after party of the Time Wrap festival, which includes all the techno artists from all over the world, in Das Zimmer Mannheim. I was 34 years old if I can recall, and Joseph Capriati was playing and he made my eyes tear up, the music, the company, the place. I had chills in my body. Another party that was engraved in my memory was the one in Cavo Paradiso.

O What is your professional dream?

M To get my music outside Greece. To play at Space Club in Miami.

O What were you dreaming of when you were a child?

M When I was a kid I was dreaming of jumping off the 4th floor and landing safely. I, also, had the ability to fly and get wherever I wanted. I was flying and I was enjoying looking at landscapes.

O Are your dreams any different now?

M Yes, I don’t fly and I don’t jump. My dreams are a little bit more realistic. I think that dreams are guiding me now. They are like thoughts that have gone through my mind and I have analyzed them but I don’t remember them. The dream is how the subconscious talks and it never lies. Just like sunsets.

O Do you ever dream of other kinds of music?

M I remember dreaming of places that I've played or haven’t played at. When I was little I was learning how to play the accordion at school, I didn’t like it and I was dreaming of playing other instruments, like the guitar or the bouzouki.

O How do you dream of yourself in the future?

M The same way I am now. I want to stay the same. Luckily, our profession helps us because we get in contact with younger generations, and new DJs and I think that there is a relationship of supporting each other.

O How’s Athens’ clubbing scene?

M A lot of places to go, and many artists that come from abroad, but not many people listen to electronic music. On the other hand, as the number of people listening to house music increases, the underground element is lost and it becomes mainstream. Currently, hard techno is considered to be underground.

Manolaco is a resident DJ at Oddity, and you will find him at Diego every Sunday. We run into him at Hadoken. His cat is four months old and he is Bengal from Egypt.
