EDITOR Our travel issue made us crave the need to rediscover Europe. After visiting Belgrade, South of France, and Istanbul, I am finally able to sit down and write this letter from the City of Lights... and love. Paris... Our constant inspiration in keeping the magazine chic, young, artsy, dynamic, and entertaining. Even though BELLO is based in Los Angeles, it is the experiences and cultures of our team members that bring together what makes this magazine such a unique and fun creation. Our June Summer Fashion Issue, yet again brings you tones of entertainment and fashion by appropriately opening the issue with Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), who really enjoyed playing dressing up on the set of our main cover photo shoot. His amazing personality, humor, and approachability are the reasons we are proud to present this modern rebel with a cause to you, our readers. Not a single page is thrown in this issue to just fill up space. “I’VE ALWAYS LOVED THAT ALBERT EINSTEIN QUOTE, “I DON’T THINK OF THE FUTURE… IT COMES SOON ENOUGH,” SAID KWANTEN, (IN CASE YOU HAD THEM CONFUSED). HE’S REFERRING OF COURSE TO THE FASTAPPROACHING END OF TRUE BLOOD, THE HIT HBO DRAMA ON WHICH HE’S PLAYED THE ETERNALLY LOYAL IF TRIGGER-HAPPY JASON SINCE 2008.
AND WHO CAN BLAME THE GUY FOR NOT WANTING TO GET AHEAD OF HIMSELF? DIFFERENCES OR NOT, THIS CHARACTER HAS BECOME A PART OF HIM… “ANY ACTOR WILL TELL YOU THAT WHETHER THEY’RE PLAYING A SMALL ROLE OR A LARGE ROLE, THERE IS A PIECE OF THEM IN EVERY SINGLE ONE… JASON IN SOME WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM HAS MADE ME A BETTER MAN AND I’VE DEFINITELY PUT A LITTLE OF MYSELF INTO HIM TOO, OVER THE YEARS.”
Needless to say, he doesn’t take too kindly to folks judging his onscreen alter ego, not without at least attempting to understand the guy’s motives. “I think Jason is almost like the moral compass of (the show). As ridiculous as some of the situations he gets himself into can be, everything comes from a place of reality with him. Jason is who he is, and if he’s funny, or naive, or just plain dumb, that’s (simply) his truth within that particular situation.” Fortunately, Kwanten has been able to explore that truth unabashedly each season; something he attributes to “HBO and the kind of show-runners that we’ve had… Alan (Ball, True Blood’s creator) has always said that the show is ultimately about the horrors of intimacy and I think my character very much goes through the complete evolution of that.” Literally… considering some of the more compromising situations that the fun loving lothario has found himself in over the years. But the actor isn’t complaining; he knew what he was getting himself into early on: “My very first day on set, season one, was such an in-your-face reveal of Jason. It was the scene where he’s having oral sex with Maudette Pickens (Danielle Sapia), and no joke, the first time you see him, he’s coming up from between her legs. That day, I sort of thought to myself, if I can get through this, anything else will be as easy as making a piece of toast.” He of course got through the memorable scene, but the writers had many more where that came from… anything to keep him, or more importantly, the audience on their toes. And Kwanten wouldn’t have it any other way. “The show never ceased to keep shocking me, but that’s what I really loved ultimately; that level of unpredictability in each episode.”

With that in mind, you won’t catch the actor dropping any serious hints about what’s in store for the Bon Temps gang in these final 10 episodes, but he will dangle a few carrots: “Season 7 sees Sookie (Ana Paquin) and Jason together a good amount again. The showrunners (specifically long time TB writer, Brian Buckner, who took over the reigns from Ball in Season 6, although Ball has remained heavily involved) have really made an effort to bring it back to where it all started, which is about the town and the people that inhabit it. And when the sh** hits the fan in Bon Temps, the (siblings) definitely have each other’s back.” Family bonding aside however, it appears that Einstein is right about this too… the future has arrived soon enough. Luckily, Ryan Kwanten has several high-profile upcoming films to promote (including Claudio Fäh’s Vikings: A Northman Saga, John Herzfeld’s Reach Me, opposite Sylvester Stallone and Danny Aiello, and Daniel Alfredson’s Kidnapping Freddie Heineken with Sir Anthony Hopkins) which should keep him busy well into the next year. As for saying goodbye to True Blood though, or more importantly, deciding what to do when the dust finally settles, the actor can’t help but reflect upon the wise words of the famous German scientist. “I don’t believe that I ever fully understood (that quote) until this moment in my life. I feel like I’ve sort of set myself up well beyond where I thought I would ever be, so it’s time to take stock of where I am, smell some roses, and eventually make a pretty selective next decision.” Words even Jason Stackhouse could live by!

WHAT DO YOU CALL AN ACTOR WHO KNOWS HOW TO SING AND DANCE? WHO HAS BEEN ON BROADWAY, ORIGINATED MULTIPLE ROLES ON THE STAGE, AND FINDS HIMSELF ON A HIT ACTION-PACKED TELEVISION SERIES? SOME WOULD CALL IT A TRIPLE THREAT, I LIKE TO CALL IT… AN AARON TVEIT, AND LUCKY FOR HIM BUT UNLUCKY FOR THE REST OF US, THERE’S ONLY ONE.
Currently, you can catch Tveit flaunting (why wouldn’t he?) his exceptional acting talents on USA’s Florida-set series Graceland, as undercover rookie FBI agent Mike Warren. Now even though the camera adores him, and fans of the show want nothing more than to stare at Mike Warren’s abs and arms when for storylines sake he’s rendered shirtless, this 30-year-old thespian is in no way close to the end of his reign. With the exception of an arc on the popular hit series ‘Gossip Girl,’ Avid small screen watchers might not have been familiar with Tveit’s talents before Graceland’s premiere in the summer of 2013. That was probably because he was simply off wowing other audiences, The New York native, after having left college early, was on his way around the nation starring as Link Larkin in the 1st national tour of Hairspray. The role of Link would prove to be rewarding as it led to Aaron’s Broadway debut.

Already Tveit seems like an independent spirit, an actor going against the grain, going from theater to film, while others do the opposite. “I never chose to leave the stage,” he says to me. “It wasn’t a conscious decision I had made. I made a conscious decision to gravitate towards whatever material moved me whether that was stage, film, or TV. When I read the pilot script of Graceland, I knew that was my next move.” After an impactful first season, his series is back for a second, an excitingly giving support to the fact that his “next move” was the right one. Still, south Florida is no walk in central park, literally. He’s traded Manhattan’s breeze for Fort Lauderdale’s humidity for the time being, but let it be

the process of this production that is familiar to me. We’re all here for one thing, and that is to make this show. The fact that we’re all here with a sole purpose, makes it about the work, and when it really is all about the work, it shows in your performance. Most of us are all transplants. So it’s very much like doing a national tour in that sense.” Once Graceland returns this summer fans will see that things on the Floridian set have in fact been heating up, and I’m not referring to the scorching weather that the cast and crew endure to bring viewers at home an explosive thrilling ride of a second season. Tveit guarantees that there’s much more to say about Graceland’s sophomore leg than just “bigger and better.” “Mike’s coming back a different way. I was particularly excited about having the show return because, coming back into it, I really wanted to hone in and focus on Mike’s character. At the end of the day he’s a product of his surroundings. As an actor it was great being able to cut deeper into this character’s personality, now that we have the platform to tell more stories and show other sides of our characters.” I don’t know if it’s the hair, so flawlessly tossed. Or his eyes, a changing-blue, or perhaps it is his genuine and soft demeanor that is to blame for his charisma and spark. Aaron Tveit has the face and the build, and don’t forget the smile of the boy next door. That is, if the boy next-door was the star of more than one world famous stage-show and if he casually gets invited to sing at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall. He looks like the kind of guy you want to bring home to mother, and let’s be honest; he probably is the kind of guy you can bring home to your mother. Whether he lives next door or not, he’ll always be this generation’s Broadway golden boy, as if the dozens of screeching fans outside his stage door would ever let him forget it. To quote Tveit’s own character; He is the one.

WITH THE UPCOMING RELEASE OF HIS ROMANTIC COMEDY, BIG GAY LOVE -- JUST IN TIME FOR LGBT PRIDE MONTH.
This summer, as my film makes its way into the world, I want share with you my journey that is Big Gay Love, a labor of love that started with a simple premise of wanting to build an equal space for all people to feel loved, as seen through the eyes of a gay man who’s on a journey of self-discovery to see what it really means to love and be loved. Finding love is hard enough - for anyone. That
is the reason why I made BGL. To share that you are not alone in your struggle, that you are not alone in looking for a substantial relationship, that your relationship can be as meaningful or meaningless in proportion to how you perceive it.
Big Gay Love is the story of a successful gay man (Jonathan Lisecki) who seems to have it all -- a good job, great friends, a beautiful home. Except there’s one setback: in the image-conscious gay world, Bob doesn’t fit into the conventions of beauty. He’s become the guy everyone adores but few desire. That is until he finds a kindred spirit in a chef named Andy (Buffy The Vampire Slayer alum Nicholas Brendon). But when true love does find Bob, can he handle it? Last year was a very exciting time to make an LGBT film. Same-sex marriage was and still remains to be the civil rights issue of my generation in America. And having read about Edie Windsor’s long and arduous struggle to have her marriage acknowledged by the United States Supreme Court, I was compelled by those who have sacrificed so that I could have this freedom so many take for granted: the freedom to choose who we love.
Big Gay Love delves into the question: what if this quest for love doesn’t come easily? What if you must drown out the world’s preconceptions on beauty and ideals to find your own idea of love? What if you have to overcome the idea that you deserve love? And can you come to the conclusion that you must love yourself first?

Throughout my journey, friends and audiences everywhere have shown me this thing called love. When I was nearly destitute trying to finish the film, I created a Kickstarter campaign hoping to complete the film, and the support I received was overwhelming. I am forever in gratitude. What I’ve learned in this process is that that my voice as a director can only come to light when it’s illuminated with the thoughts and feedback of supporters. For it is those supporters who have brought this film to life and have emotionally enriched this director beyond measure. And to that, I now ask myself with every film I write:

Is this film coming from an authentic place? Being true to oneself is a key to success.
Am I speaking truthfully about the subject? Don’t come off as contrived. Audiences are smart; they can see and smell a fake from a mile away.

Beyond having something to say, am I listening to those around me? Criticism is great, especially

if it’s constructive. Those who are happy to see you succeed will offer as much advice as they can, and you should take it. Receiving another point of view can help you elevate your story.

What is the point of view I am contributing that is distinctly my own? In other words, what is the message you’d like to communicate? What are you trying to say? And most importantly…

Will this film enrich people’s lives? It’s important for audiences to take something away from a film, no matter how big or small it may be. Maybe someone’s perspective is changed. Or perhaps someone gains some insight on a topic or idea they never considered. Don’t hold back in making that impact. If you have a unique film that comes from an authentic place and you can answer the aforementioned questions truthfully, I can tell you that when you approach producers and investors, they will be very intrigued. Furthermore, even if you raise money on your own film through crowdfunding, these are the same questions your supporters will want answered. So go forth, fellow filmmakers and dreamers. BRAD’S BUZZ
I’m not usually a Sci-Fi guy, but then again, I wasn’t really into fantasy before Game of Thrones blew my mind, or bloodsucker soaps before True Blood became television crack. In fact, almost every time HBO tackled a sub-genre, the network has generally elevated the material above mere “fanboy” stroking. This time, ‘Little Children’ author, Tom Perotta and Hollywood’s own script Dr. Fix-it, Damon Lindelof are behind it, Justin Theroux and Liv Tyler are starring, and assumedly, the twisted, moody emotional ennui is going to get thick. I’m in, but fingers crossed it’s more Lost than Carnivale.
Think Like A Man Too
The first one introduced the world to Kevin Hart and his unique brand of impish posturing meets savvy selfdeprecation, earning nearly 100 million dollars around the globe. Now, if this sequel has even half of the chemistry, camaraderie, and laughs of the first one, it’s guaranteed to be a satisfying gut buster. Plus, everyone’s back… just the way we like it.

Jenny Slate needs to be a star. From Girls, to Hello Ladies, to ‘Marcel the Shell With Shoes On’, the actress simultaneously breathes fresh air into and classes up anything she’s in - even when dropping the f-bomb on SNL. Now she gets her chance to shine in this abortion comedy from writer/director Gillian Robespierre that charmed audiences in January at The Sundance Film Festival. And if that weren’t enough of a reason to check it out, David Cross and Crystal Fairy herself, Gabby Hoffman, also star.

‘In The Lonely Hour’ – I’ll be the first to admit that the words ‘British soul singer’ aren’t always enough to hook this proud Yank, but after the one two punch of his Disclosure “collabo”, ‘Latch’, and his incredible SNL appearance, I took a long dive into YouTube and didn’t come up for days. The soulful Londoner - one part Adele, one part Antony Hegarty captures the lust and longing of love as few belters can. Damn you Brits, you win again!

If season one was any indication, these ladies have most definitely been up to “thangs”! Creator Jenji Kohan balances the heartfelt and absurd like few can, making for some seriously riveting television... I know where I’ll be June 6th!

It’s been a decade since the events of the last film took place, and while most of humanity has been eradicated, some – including a family played by Keri Russell, Jason Clarke, and Kodi Smit-McPhee - have managed to survive the plague. No big surprise for the audience… huge surprise for the apes! Contact in The Muir Woods outside San Francisco is sudden, scary, and violent.

The Apes evolution mirrors that of early humans, only radically speeded up. When we first meet them, they’ve already organized themselves into complex settlements, but more importantly, they are beginning to use verbal communication, aka language the same way we do. Now, reading and writing - thanks to interspecies contact isn’t too far off.

Andy Serkis is back as Caesar, and once again, the gifted actor adds a depth and physicality to the Simian that makes him not only ferocious, but also highly sensitive and intelligent. In Dawn, Caesar faces his greatest test, as war over this new world threatens to break out and destroy the fragile society he and his fellow apes have worked so hard to build. But anything is better than the way things were decades ago… that is if you’re not a human.

Gary Oldman brings his usual intensity and overall “badassness” to the film as a human rebel leader who rallies his troops before a particularly hostile encounter with the Apes from an overgrown, apocalyptic Market Street in Downtown SF. Seriously, this guy does not play!

Director Matt Reeves and his team have outdone 2012’s Rise with an even more sophisticated blend of motion capture technology and CGI. The apes look incredible and to watch them swarm the forest in all of their beastly glory is to hear a call from your own primordial past… or at least from the wild imagination of your childhood. Now let’s just hope the movie is finished in time for its July 11th opening!

The Leftovers (HBO) June 29 Lost producer Damon Lindelof returns with this adaptation of Tom Perotta’s 2011 novel about a worldwide Rapture and the desperate people left behind. With a cast that includes Justin Theroux and Liv Tyler, we hope these Leftovers are anything but warmed over.

Welcome to Sweden (NBC) July 10 Who cares about nepotism when the one doling out favors is Amy Poehler? She’s the executive producer behind this fish-out-of-water sitcom, which stars her brother Greg and is based on his real-life experience following his girlfriend from New York to her native Sweden.
Masters of Sex (Showtime) July 13 Though it started off slow, this series about human sexuality researchers Dr. William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) has become required viewing for it’s gorgeous mid-century costuming and decor and fiery relationships.
The Strain (FX) July Carlton Cuse, another Lost alum, is behind this horror series, based on director Guillermo del Toro’s novel trilogy that follows a CDC expert and 35
a Holocaust survivor who join forces against an outbreak of vampirism. Because it has to be better than True Blood, right?
The Quest (ABC) July 31 This geek-tastic reality series, which mixes Amazing Race-style competitions with an immersive Lords of the Ringslike fantasy setting, is our pick for Guilty Pleasure of the Summer.

These are real heroes who have lost arms, legs, lives; who’re all wounded in some way, whether it’s physically or emotionally, and we think their story needs to be told.” Told in a way that places truth above Hollywood spectacle… “This is real war. (The movie) may feel like ‘Lone Survivor’ or ‘Black Hawk Down’, but it’s real. There are no special effects… no Mark Wahlberg. These soldiers and these marines are the stars.” And clearly they’re grateful to see their efforts captured on celluloid, even if the memories the images conjure aren’t always happy ones. “We have Gold Star families and Wounded Warriors who come to every event and they’ve lost loved ones who are actually in the movie, but it’s so amazing when they come up and hug you and thank you. One vet even called it “digital medicine.” The Hornet’s Nest is in theaters this summer.

ELIZA TAYLOR HAS BEEN AN ACTRESS PRACTICALLY ALL OF HER YOUNG LIFE. WHILE ACTING WASN’T CONSIDERED INITIALLY A CHILDHOOD ASPIRATION FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL AUSSIE, THE 25-YEAR-OLD ACTRESS GREW UP A QUIET AND RESERVED YOUNG LADY. “I WAS BORN IN MELBOURNE. I HAD A REALLY GREAT UPBRINGING. MY PARENTS DIVORCED WHEN I WAS REALLY YOUNG, BUT THEY REMAINED REALLY, REALLY GOOD FRIENDS. THEY BOTH REMARRIED AND I ENDED UP LIVING BETWEEN THE TWO OF THEM AND HAVING TWO AMAZING FAMILIES AS OPPOSED TO ONE. I WAS REALLY LUCKY IN THAT SENSE.” FRIENDS OF HER PARENTS REFERRED TO HER AS A “SPOOKY KID” BECAUSE SHE WOULDN’T TALK OR SAY ANYTHING TO ANYONE. “WHEN I WAS NINE OR TEN, I JUST CAME OUT OF MY SHELL. SUDDENLY, I WAS PLAYING ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT CHARACTERS. I WOULDN’T ANSWER TO MY OWN NAME,” EXCLAIMS ELIZA. “FOR EXAMPLE, I WOULD ONLY ANSWER TO ARIEL FROM THE LITTLE MERMAID. MY MOM WOULD BE LIKE, “ELIZA!” I WOULDN’T SAY ANYTHING. SHE WOULD SAY, “ARIEL,” AND I WOULD GO, “YUP!”
Her acting career started when she was 11 years old when a friend of hers suggested that she go to a drama class with her. “I went to drama class and I think my parents were relieved because they wanted me to put this newfound energy I had acquired into something a little bit more productive.” Upon going to her first acting class, her acting teacher saw promise in her abilities and wanted her to audition for a kids’ TV series called Pirate Islands. After three initial callbacks later, she got a lead role and never went back to class and continued working steadily in Australia as a young actress ever since. Fast forward to living and being an actress in the City of Angels (Los Angeles) where your life and your luck can literally change on a dime, Eliza was definitely ready to call L.A. quits when she had all her money stolen and her credit cards “skimmed” until she received a call from her manager insisting on her taking this meeting. “He [Eliza’s manager] was like, “It’s a CW show. It’s a really great script. I’m sending it to you now!” I read it and loved it. I went in the next day and I got the role. My whole life at that point was turned upside down at that moment.” That life altering role was the lead character of strong-willed, independent Clarke Griffin in the CW’s Sci-Fi drama The 100. “The 100 is set 97 years after a nuclear apocalypse. It’s about a group of juvenile offenders who are sent from the last remaining space station to see if Earth is inhabitable again. There’s a lot more to it than that.” With the buzz generating on just the pilot alone, the show had already garnered a fan base that initially both surprised and thrilled her especially when she got the chance to go to Comic-Con. “Comic-Con is just a whole other world. It’s just such a bizarre, fun bubble. I had an amazing time and I felt very welcomed which was lovely.” When asked about the differences and the similarities between her and her

alter ego, Clarke, she compares her current journey with what her character on the show is going through. “I’d like to think that I’m tough. The only way I can equate it to be that she’s put in a situation where people assume she’s going to fail and that it’s just too hard. I feel like a lot of people in the industry and even those who aren’t in the industry put that kind of stress on actors and creative people because it is such a tough place to be successful in. I do have a very keen determination to be successful no matter what people tell me or what they assume about me. I find that to be similar about myself and Clarke, but obviously they are very different situations.” While working on the show, Eliza started developing bonds and friendships which she feels fortunate and confident that will last a lifetime. In her spare time, and high on her list of things to do when she’s not busy filming, is that she loves to cook. “I cook nearly every night, even when I’m on the go. I love entertaining and feeding people. Even when we were shooting The 100, every Sunday, we created this thing called Sunday Classic where we would invite the cast and crew over and I would spend six hours in the kitchen just making a feast for everyone while they hung out and socialized. It’s sort of like therapy for me and a nice bonding experience. The cast and crew are incredible. I’ve definitely become really good friends with everyone who is lucky for me because coming to L.A. by myself and really not knowing anyone and then doing this series, it’s created this social network for me that I didn’t have before and I feel so much more at home here so I’m grateful for that.” When asked if she ever gets homesick from being away from her family, she admits that it’s always hard to leave whenever she goes back to visit, but because of her incredible group of friends and her very supportive family, they give her the encouragement and love that she needs to continue to succeed. As far as future projects, in addition to The 100, Eliza just finished shooting a spy/thriller feature coming out towards the end of the year called November Man with Pierce Brosnan whom she absolutely gushes about and calls him an Irish gentleman. “This movie was a very big deal for me. I got a call saying that I need to test for this role and after landing it, the next day they’re putting me on a plane to Serbia. It was mental. It was an incredible experience, especially working with Pierce Brosnan. When I told my mom, she literally lost it. She’s a huge fan.” When asked what it was like working with him on the set, not only did she receive a big hug from him, but also got paid the highest compliment ever which made her working relationship with him during the film that more enjoyable. With a strong family foundation and a strong sense of self on how she perceives this industry, Eliza has allowed herself to be on this neverending “rollercoaster” and to be emotionally available and vulnerable to the unexpected. “The work that I want to do over the next few years, and hopefully for a lot longer than that, is I want to play really interesting characters and make good choices.”

With Calvin Klein’s Eternity, its relevance – not to mention retail success – is due to a harmonious union of an iconic fragrance and advertising campaign. Those elements symbolized a beautiful marriage of equals, and that can last a lifetime.
While change is inevitable, sameness can also be a novel concept. Calvin Klein is known for being one of the first designers to sign models to long-term contracts, keeping them as exclusives of the fashion house. One of its longest relationships has been with an original supermodel from the 80’s: Christy Turlington Burns. She was the face of the iconic brand for years; classic, yet simultaneously modern. When it was time to launch the Eternity fragrance, famed photographer Peter Lindbergh shot Turlington Burns and fellow model Mark Vanderloo (an equally famous face at the time), softly lit in a romantic embrace on a beach. Unlike previous campaigns that used sex to sell a product, Eternity symbolized a commitment between two people in love – wedding rings were worn on the models. For its 25th anniversary, Calvin Klein returned to the original campaign (now with a refreshed version of the 1995 “Time can’t touch us. Celebrating 25 years.” tagline), which had an enduring quality associated with the best-selling scent. But it’s not only the campaign that received an update. NAIL ARTIST WHITNEY GIBSON SHOWS US HOW TO BE CREATIVE FOR SUMMERTIME USING BEACHY INSPIRED COLORS AND TEXTURES.
To begin, I used a combination of H. Gillerman essential oil blends to moisturize and relax Maya’s hands. I filed using a Nailing Hollywood glass file and used Formula X nail cleanser to get all oils off of her nail beds. While oils are great for hydrating hands and cuticles, they are the enemy of nail polish longevity and should be thoroughly removed before applying color.
Orange You Glad A bright orange can be as striking as red, but feels fresher for spring and summer. I used L’Orange by Loreal, applied a nail shield by Hex Nail Charms on one pinky and used topcoat to achieve that high gloss shine.

Tanlines Inspired by a polish of the same name, I thought it would be fun to play with layering shades of nude. The diagonal stroke is a quick and easy way to create ‘nail art’-even if you’re a beginner. For these nails, I used HIPP x RGB Foundations in F3 and F4, Ginger and Liz ‘Most Wanted,’ and of course ‘Tanlines’ by Floss Gloss.
Surfboard For this SoCal inspired mani, I used five pastel colors by Floss Gloss (Perf, Lean, Con Limon, Wave Pool and Pony) in a horizontal gradient. The result is a cartoonish shadow effect, made even more graphic by the outline, for which I used an Orly Instant Artist striper in Sky Blue. I love periwinkle because it’s uplifting and feminine without being too girly and it flatters every skin tone.
Pearly Whites The all white trend popped up all over the runways and on nails it makes a clean, bold statement. I used Formula X polish in Cloud Nine for a semi sheer white base and then applied iridescent foils over the top for a look that evokes bubbles. 91

Neither one of us was that experienced at the time, but Keenan gave us so much room and (he) so knows how to nurture young comedic talent, so we both just went for it.”

Went for it they did, to the tune of almost 300 million dollars in global box office, catapulting both young ladies to the big leagues, and firmly establishing them as two of the funniest actresses of their generation. For Hall, it was also the start of a friendship that still exists today. “Anna just makes me laugh so much. She and I were just talking recently about how we’ve got to work together again, and it’s gotta be soon!” Surely they’re not the only ones who feel that way… it’s just a question of finding the time to make it happen, considering the fact that Faris is busy fronting Chuck Lorre’s hit CBS sitcom, Mom, and Hall has starred in no less than three major films since Thanksgiving. But the versatile actress is complaining… Quite contrary in fact, she’s been counting her blessings ever since Malcolm D. Lee’s Best Man Holiday surprised everyone by becoming one of the biggest hits of the 2013 Holiday Season. Everyone that is, except the dedicated fans that had been waiting over a decade for a sequel to the beloved 1999 film, The Best Man. For Hall and her costars including Taye Diggs and Sanaa 94

Lathan, Terrance Howard, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau, Morris Chestnut, Monica Calhoun, and Melissa de Sousa – all back from the original) it was the opinion of these folks that mattered most. “Honestly, the biggest thing we were concerned about (while filming) was that the fans would be like, Wait a minute… what is this??! There were laughs and happiness in the movie of course, but there was also heartbreak and real life and we hoped people would still be excited. So when they were, it was really touching.” Those same fans will be happy to know that they won’t have to wait another decade plus to revisit the gang; Lee’s already begun working on part three, and Hall will most definitely be back. What might be a little longer in the making though is another romantic comedy starring the actress and her About Last Night leading man, Kevin Hart. “People keep asking us that”, she says flattered and endearingly surprised. “We’re trying to figure out what it (should be). Kevin has to slow down and catch this breath first, but it’s coming. It’s just about picking the right thing.” Until then however, the two can be seen in this month’s Think Like a Man Too, the much-anticipated follow-up to their hit 2012 ensemble clash of the sexes comedy, Think Like A Man. And just like its predecessor, this one manages to bring the funny while still serving up some serious social commentary, much to the delight of Regina Hall: “I think the film resonates with males and females because it’s very conscious of showing that we both have areas where
we fall short and where we excel. Nobody is perfect… That being said, the guys still get to be guys and have fun. We’re in Vegas and they’re doing their own thing. We’re also doing our own thing, but the thru line of love and respect is still there.” It’s that same balance that has allowed this DC-born and raised former academic (seriously, she has a Journalism Degree from NYU) to thrive in an industry that loves to place everyone - especially its attractive actresses - into creatively stifling boxes. Because at the end of the day, there simply is no separating Hall’s comedic gifts from her undeniable intellect: “I think there’s a certain wit and understanding of culture and what’s current that connects with laughter and taps into what’s going to resonate with the masses. I don’t think that connection (informs) every comedians’ or comedic actors’ process, but for me, the more I’m aware of the world around me, the more I have to draw from. And the more we, her fans have to enjoy!

packed for an extra long weekend at the Hard Rock Resort and Casino in Punta Cana, one of the many global spots in a luxury franchise that is attracting not only fun-in-the-sun seekers but some of the biggest names in music as well (more on that later). I step off my plane, and I am immediately greeted by the humidity of the region. As a decade-long resident of
dry Southern California, I’m nearly stifled by it. All of the terminals at the Punta Cana International Airport have thatched roofs, providing the kind of exotic vibe visitors love (after all, that’s what a getaway vacay is all about). Once I get my passport stamped, walk past posters for various kinds of rum, and collect my bearings, I hop aboard the air-conditioned Mercedes shuttle van that takes me to the resort.
How does one prepare to party in the Dominican Republic alongside the likes of Snoop Dogg and Rihanna? Answer: there is no proper way to brace yourself for an unforgettable experience in the second largest Caribbean nation at one of the hottest all-inclusive resorts on the planet. One thing’s for sure: bring a swimsuit. Or two. Or three.
THE ARRIVAL My itinerary calls for nearly a dozen wardrobe changes, but I manage to stuff my carry-on luggage like a pro (and give myself a pat on the back). I am SUMMER FASHION issue - BELLOmag.com

smothered Chilean sea bass that passes my plate and nearly knocks over my Green Garden, a martini-like libation that consists of vodka, cucumber, bell pepper, mint, and celery. Even though Simon Mansion may not be a part of the resort’s all-inclusive package, it’s worth going the extra mile with your American dollar.
ONE NIGHT WITH SNOOP DOGG
The spacious lobby of the Hard Rock has a cathedral-tall ceiling (another thatched roof) and plush seating for guests coming and going. A flute of champagne is placed in my hand, and I am also given a map of the grounds. It’s as big as a theme park; trams run on schedules, shuttling guests between the resort’s main building and the rest of the facilities built on 121 lush acres. My room is one of the many decadent “Caribbean suites” that comes with so many indulgent amenities, it makes me question whether or not I have to leave my bed during this three-night stay. Private balcony, check. Dual showers, check. My own liquor dispenser. Check, check. And to top it all off? Situated in the center of the multi-leveled room is a Hydro Spa Tub. Right away I make a mental note to take advantage of the two-person bath and incorporate the chilled bottle of champagne and chocolate truffles into my inevitable “me time” later that night.
and lunch buffet (the 12-ounce brisket is beyond words). There’s also Ciao and Pizzeto for guests craving Italian fare and brick-oven pizza, respectively, and Isla, for diners looking for Caribbeanflavored fish and poultry dishes. Finally, serving up a mouthwatering menu of California-Caribbean fusion, Kerry Simon’s Mansion Restaurant is where “taste is the featured performer in this rock opera of modern comestibles that nourish the body and the soul.” Designed after the Top Chef winner’s own home, it’s the perfect place for a pre-concert dinner. The restaurant is divided into different rooms, much like a house, the bar at the front resembling a chic library. The wall behind the bar has been constructed to look like a massive bookcase, adorned with hundreds of hardcover spines while the cocktail tables are illuminated by bronze desk lamps. While sampling one dish after another, I stop to savor the coconut curry-

Had I worn an earpiece hooked up to a stealth mic, I could pose as one of the many burly security guards who line up the entrance to Oro Nightclub, a venue where $15,000 will get you a VIP table on the balcony overlooking the massive dance floor. Warming up the crowd for the night’s headliner is Cash Cash, the New Jersey-based EDM group that’s coincidentally slotted on my iPod’s vacation playlist (two must-listens: “Overtime” and “Take Me Home”). As the clock strikes midnight, the fashionable clubgoers inch closer to the stage on which Snoop Dogg is expected to perform. Luckily for us, we’re enjoying the view from the VIP balcony where the bottle service is non-stop. I suddenly feel like I’m experiencing every rap video cliche at once. I keep my camera in one hand and a glass of Moet in the other while I stand on the staircase and wait for Snoop to arrive. And he does. The roar of the crowd is deafening, but all is good once he breaks into his 20-year-spanning discography of hits. “Gin and Juice” gets everyone going. So does “Sexual

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD When it comes to vacations, the term “all-inclusive” sounds as beautiful as any picturesque sunset. It can bring tears of joy to any vacationer looking to sample every type of cuisine imaginable. And Punta Cana’s Hard Rock resort offers nearly a dozen dining options. There’s the massive, museum-like Zen, a hibachi-style Asian bistro, Ipanema, where one can indulge in Brazillianstyle meat dishes, and Toro, a steakhouse that doubles as a breakfast 99

THE RIHANNA CONNECTION Our last night in Punta Cana is one for the record books. More than 15,000 people have gathered on a large patch of the resort’s golf course for one of Hard Rock’s biggest events: Rihanna’s Diamonds World Tour. With the National Guard, a sizable amount of police, and 260 security guards on hand, the concert is run like a tight ship. We hear Rihanna is to arrive by helicopter, and my imagination runs wild on the possible grand entrances
Rihanna she could make. Having gotten a sneak peek at the stage the day before, I think of the enormous amount of prep work that went into this spectacle (construction started four days earlier). The opening act, A$AP Rocky, struts his stuff on stage and mistakenly gives a shout out to Santa Domingo (everyone overlooks it). He adequately pumps up

And while the spa is impressive in size (the sensory pool lounge area is, in a word, cavernous), it has been designed to give guests privacy, signature personalized service, discreet attention, and the ultimate in relaxation and revitalization. Once your body readjusts, I suggest taking it outside to the beach. The fine, white sand is like walking on powder. And the water? A warm and inviting crystal turquoise you can’t resist. Tip: if you’re looking for a good tan, stick to the mornings before the sun shifts away into the afternoon haze.

He sits three couches away from us on the VIP platform that’s been erected for special guests. The two bracelets I wear grant me access to the pit at the edge of the stage. Once Rihanna arrives and appears at the top of a staircase on her minimalist set, there’s no turning back. The Barbadian diva kicks things off with hard-hitting grinders like “You Da One,” “Man Down,” and “Rude Boy.” After throwing it back to 2007’s “Umbrella,” it’s time for RiRi’s medley of dance anthems. The opening chimes of the Calvin Harris-produced “We Found Love” gets everyone screaming. It’s shortly followed by “S&M,” “Only Girl in the World,” and “Where Have You Been”. She’s accompanied by a group of female backup dancers in camoflauge fatigues who show no signs of slowing down. But soon it’s time to wind things down, to catch a breath and take in this memorable moment. “Thank you so much for being such an epic fucking audience,” she tells the crowd before closing out the show with the tour’s titular hit song. “DR, I love you. I love you for showing me so much love and energy tonight. That’s the shit that keeps us coming back. I can’t wait to come back already.” Neither can I.

Shishito Pepper & Cherry Tomato Salad BY CHEF RONNIE WOO “This is actually one of my favorite summer salads because it’s unexpected and different than your traditional salad. The best part about shishito peppers is that they are generally mild, but every once in a while you get a hot one so it’s a bit of a gamble! Enjoy!” – Chef Ronnie Woo
Shishito Pepper & Cherry Tomato Salad • 1 brioche bun, or ¼ panko bread crumbs • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder • 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil • 1 pound of cherry tomatoes • 5-finger pinch of kosher salt • ¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil, plus more for finishing • ½ pound of shishito peppers • 4-finger pinch of freshly ground black pepper • 2 tablespoons of ponzu sauce • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce • Juice of ½ lemon, plus more for finishing • ½ cup of feta cheese
Instructions: Breadcrumbs: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut the brioche bun into small cubes and add to a small food processor along with the garlic powder. Pulse until they are fine crumbs. Transfer them to a baking sheet and toss with the olive oil. Transfer to the oven and bake until the crumbs begin to turn golden brown, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside. Tomatoes: Slice tomatoes in half and transfer to a bowl. Toss with the kosher salt and set aside. Shishito Peppers: Add the olive oil to a large sauté pan over medium high heat. When the oil begins to give off just a hint of steam, gently add the shishito peppers in one layer followed by a sprinkling of the ground black pepper. Cook the peppers for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until they begin to char. Just as the last side is about done, add the ponzu sauce, soy sauce, and lemon juice. Toss the peppers to coat in the sauce and let cook for 1-2 more minutes. Assembly: Arrange the shishito peppers in the middle of a plate, followed by the tomatoes around them. Sprinkle with the garlic breadcrumbs, feta cheese crumbles, and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Enjoy!

I’ve been to the most beautiful beaches in the world. Growing up in San Diego, California wasn’t too bad either. But if there is anything I love about traveling it’s visiting the islands that are just developing. Here are the top 5 islands that need you and is breath taking.
1. Palau
The Micronesian nation of Palau isn’t formed so much of islands as giant green mushrooms. Certainly that’s how its Rock Archipelago appears: a bloom of over 200 lush limestone islets undercut by azure seas and fringed by sugary sand. It’s ideal kayaking territory, though if you tire of paddling, you can always flip overboard to float above some of the world’s best subaqua action. For added weirdness, save your snorkel for Jellyfish Lake where millions of gelatinous zooplankton which had lost their ability to sting and perform a benignly beautiful underwater ballet. Palau International Airport, on Babeldaob Island has flights from Taipei (4hr 55min) Guam (1hr 45min) and Manila (2hr 35min).
2. Tonga
Tonga is not your common or garden paradise. Yes, its 170 odd isles are idyllically sprinkled across the bluest South Pacific: its flawless sands are tickled by palms and want to dive into seas. Buts it’s also the region’s only remaining kingdom where globalization has yet to entire erode it’s Polynesian traditions: locals still weave mats, wear Tupenu skirts and gossip over intoxicating Kava. Ha’apai is the place for empty beaches and super snorkeling; Niuas preferred by the South Pacific’s humpbacks each year, these whales come here to breed.
3. Seychelles
Nary, a ‘world best beach’ list is compiled without the Seychelles getting a mention. This clutch of 115 islands sprinkled in the Indian Ocean got all the good genes: its waters are clear and teeming with life; its sands are sensuously soft; its interiors are wild and luscious; even its coconuts. The buttocky coco de mer beaches are sexy. The three main islands (Praslin, Mahe, and La Digue) are perfectly pretty. Even better are Curieuse, where giant tortoises lumber, and the coral atoll of Aldabra, uninhabited but for more tortoises (the world’s largest population) and a wealth of species besides.
4. St Vincent & The Grenadines
Know your budget; choose your boat, that is the key to unlocking the lovely island chain in the southeast Caribbean. If your wallet’s well-endowed, travel by private yacht, from large, green and gorgeous St Vincent down the tail of unblemished Grenadines. Those without an oligarch’s income should hop on fun ferries. Join the locals!
5. Cook Islands
Captain Cook would be proud. The 15 island archipelago that bears the explorer’s name is a beaut, incorporating some of the South Pacific’s best sand palm sea paradises. It’s impossible not to drool into Aitutaki’s cerulean lagoon. Of course when you’re talking specks in a 165 million sq. km ocean, accessibility is relative. But with many an Oz to USA flight touching down on the main island, Rarotonga, visiting the Cooks isn’t just a pipe dream. Beware those who visits find it very difficult to leave the private beaches, beautiful jungle hiking trails, and calm kayak lagoons. 103

From A to B. I was on tour with the First National tour of Jersey Boys. We were in San Francisco at the beautiful Curran Theatre. Mr. E came to see the show. [Clint Eastwood] I couldn’t believe it at first. We met very briefly after the show - it was about a 10 second actual introduction amidst photos and all that - and then a few weeks later I was on my way to New York after being asked to audition. I was totally caught off guard because I’m a Canuck with basically NO experience in film or T.V. (I’ve done a S.O.C. docudrama and a couple nonunion commercials) and so didn’t expect to be even remotely in the mix. A couple weeks later I flew down to NYC and auditioned for Mr. Eastwood’s Casting Director. I flew in that morning to New York from Toronto and it was raining. I left a couple hours early in my suit, armed with my umbrella, for the audition which was way south of where I was staying with friends who’d advised me to get out at Columbus circle and cab from there. I did, and when I got out of the subway at Columbus, it was pouring sheets of rain, the city was stopped dead in the downpour, and I ran around like a maniac for 45 minutes trying to hail a cab. I gave up and called Uber. 140 dollars later I arrived looking drowned and 30 minutes late. At one point in the car, I nearly got out and cut my losses, but I had already spent $800 on a flight down. The audition was short. A couple weeks later I got the call and a few weeks after that I was flying down to LA for a costume fitting, trying to keep the stupid grin off my face.
Video Village. It was a rare and incredible experience. Witnessing someone with his breath of experience working at the level he is, surrounded by a family of people who work as his crew that almost don’t have to speak words to understand each other: it’s masterful. Everyone was so proud, happy and excited to come to work. It is, in my humble opinion, the best possible environment to work in as an actor. I think that is engineered because Mr. Eastwood is an actor first. He knows that a generous, collaborative, fun, focused, trusting, director is the best kind. I just tried to learn and soak as much in as I could; never knowing if I’ll ever get the opportunity to be part of something like this again. Showtime. I would say before getting involved with Jersey Boys, I’d never done a show where my off-stage life, so closely mimicked what I went through each night on stage. For the year and a half I was on the road with the First National Tour of Jersey Boys, I got to learn firsthand what it was to live out of suitcases and in hotel rooms, be away from family and friends, feel like a rock-star each night. Those guys were doing shorter stints than we were, so I imagine there were times when they didn’t even know what city they were in. It was wild. Being part of a hit show like Jersey Boys makes you feel like a superhero - the fans of the show are amazing this show really gets all kinds of people on a deeply cellular level - Frankie and the Four Seasons are part of the collective classic American songbook their music has underscored people’s June 2014 - BELLO

lives for decades. If I can be a tiny drop in that well of historical awesomeness, I’m a lucky man.

Lights, Camera, Stories. It was a blast. Everyone showed up to work excited and ready each day. Mr. Eastwood was always in the mix. There are shots in the finished movie where I can say he is literally six inches to my left, just out of frame, watching. There was a time where he spent the scene hiding under a giant grand piano to be out of sight. The man is in his 80s and he’s still spry and very much on his feet and in the mix. He’s a little kid really with a wicked sense of humor. I enjoyed watching him between takes trying to practice the Frankie Valli signature falsetto sound. Also, Frankie himself was on set quite a bit with his son. It was wild to be able to ask him questions between takes and, in some cases, have him in the audience as we performed. So many memorable days - I spent mine and my character’s birthday shooting my big scene in the film - the guys got me a cake and sang Happy Birthday - hard to beat that one. Stage door love. There are so many… predictable, but a huge fan of Sondheim, particularly Sweeney, Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park, and Company… I love Adam Guettel and Jason Robert Brown. One of my first trips to New York, I saw Urinetown and was so excited that this kind of crazy musical existed. RENT got me hooked on the music theatre world; I had the tapes. Tommy, as directed by Des McAnuff, was one of the first musicals I saw. Cabaret, Carousel, Kurt Weill, Chicago, Producers, Kander and Ebb, West Side Story, so many… I also, can’t wait to seeing Neil Patrick Harris Hedwig! Homework. Going into the stage play we did tons of research. From time period to relevance of money - it’s important when you’re talking about 10 grand in 1963 that you know what that’s like today for example - to cars to dialect to history. We had a great dramaturgical team who assembled a package with basically 109

everything. I personally researched as much as I could about Nick, finding out we share the same birthday, which was wild, and immersed myself in the Four Seasons music and their influences as much as possible. I had to learn how to play bass, how to smoke, and how to sing. It’s the rangiest role I’ve had in a while. As for prep for the film - I mostly just hoped the script was similar, [laughs]. I was worried since I’d done the show as long as I had that it would be difficult to change a whole bunch of dialogue if the script was totally different - but it wasn’t, thankfully. The time between when I got the call and when we started shooting was quite brief, so I just had to try to draw confidence from the past 4 years of my Jersey Boys experience and wholeheartedly trust the guidance of Mr. Eastwood and his team. I reviewed some historical notes, watched some movies again that initially inspired me, and revisited some dialect stuff. But essentially, it was mostly about trying to convince myself I was as ready as I could be at that point, and that I was up for the challenge. Mad Michael. I love the time when this story takes place. I grew up on the Wonder Years - Winne was my first T.V. girlfriend; Mad Men is one of my favorite shows on T.V. The Motown Museum in Detroit is one of my favorite museums in the world. I think the 50’s and 60’s is an incredibly historically dense couple of decades for the world and the US particularly. So much changed, some say a loss of innocence. Some say the redefining of a nation. However you define it, it was an incredibly monumental couple of decades, and I think that’s why we see so many shows taking us back to those exciting and formative times.

IF THE PINNACLE OF SUCCESS FOR AN OLYMPIC ATHLETE IS DEFINED BY THE HIGHEST MEDAL OF ACHIEVEMENT FOR THEIR FIELD, THEN WHAT ARE WE TO MAKE OF IT WHEN SUCH AN ACHIEVEMENT HAPPENS TIME AND TIME AGAIN? IN THE CASE OF PROFESSIONAL BEACH VOLLEYBALL PLAYER AND THREE-TIME OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST KERRI WALSH JENNINGS, YOU GET A LONG INTRO BEFORE YOUR NAME… ALONG WITH A FEW OTHER DESIRABLE ADJECTIVES.
“The greatest beach volleyball team of all time” is commonly used to describe Kerri and former teammate Misty May-Treanor. Aside from the obvious reason why this is so marvelous is the fact that it is not gender specific, which is rare and something I asked Kerri about while she was in China for the FIVB Shanghai Grand Slam: “I feel so much pride when we are described as the “greatest team”. I very humbly believe it to be true and love that the gender title has been taken out. We are athletes, period. We are a team, period. Together we accomplished what no one else had and so I will gratefully accept the title.” The number three starts to become a common theme as you explore her accomplishments further: also three World Championship Gold Medals, and, most importantly, three beautiful children. I asked if good things have always come to her in threes. “Life has always been good to me and not just in threes! I aspire to win another gold medal and I would absolutely love to have another child, so I don’t ever want to limit myself. That being said, I feel so grateful and blessed for all that I have in my life and grateful to be in the position I’m in as a mommy with a wonderful husband, chasing big dreams TOGETHER.” 115
That husband she speaks of is fellow professional volleyball Player Casey Jennings, with whom she is also competitive with, but only “when it makes sense to be!” Kerri continues “We play one-on-one every once in a while and that’s likely me at my most competitive. We both like to win. It’s our job(s) and we like that fact. In every other aspect of our life we are teammates and partners. I am so in love with my husband and our sweet family. I’ll take on the world to satisfy the competitor in me and leave the loving for them.” Winning a fourth Gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics would not only break her streak of all-things three, but it would put Kerri at the top of the list for most Olympic gold medals won in the sport of Volleyball, a list she currently shares with 6 other athletes – each having (you guessed it) three. I asked Kerri how fitting it would be to go from winning her first World Championship gold medal in Rio to winning her (possible) final Olympic gold medal there. “Our dream and our plan is to win the Gold medal in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Rio holds a special place in my heart and I will work hard to make my/our dreams come true.” When she says “our” she is referring to former opponent, now teammate, April Ross. “The transition from opponent to teammate with April has been really fun and really natural. I think we both got a good feel for each other, professionally speaking, from all our years of competition.” But like any successful relationship, there has to be more than one dimension to it, thus her relationship with April goes beyond the court: “The fun part and the most inspiring part for me, is the personal relationship that we’ve started to build. She is a great woman and I’m looking forward to getting to know her, her loved ones and all the rest. I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot with partners - Misty, April, Casey [husband]. I couldn’t dream up better people to chase dreams with.”
With preparations fully underway for that fourth gold medal, I asked Kerri how she maintains her competitive level of fitness given the four year gap in between Olympic Games: “I do Pilates, in studio, twice a week. I’ll do a beach or a track workout once a week. I’ll do my weight training workouts at Fast Twitch twice a week, along with some work with my sports psychologist, Mike Gervais, and some physical therapy if needed. I train myself head to toe for my job ... My family helps to train my heart!” To maintain healthy skin and combat the damage that would normally come with extended exposure to the sun and outdoor elements, she explains that she is “very disciplined when it comes to my morning and evening routines. I use all Skin Authority products (cleanser, vitamin c serum, vitamin d cream, brightening serum, resurfacing accelerator, etc.) every day! I apply my facial and body SPF before I leave the house to ensure full coverage. I wear a visor to keep the sun off my face and my Oakley sunglasses provide UV protection fort eyes and they give added protection to my face. It’s a labor of love, but I’m seeing results and keeping skin cancer away so it’s so very worth it!” For nutritional intake pre/post match, Kerri, who also happens to be Designer Whey’s newest Brand Ambassador, explains: “A protein shake using vanilla Designer Whey, chia seeds, spirulina, cinnamon or a raw almond butter, banana and honey sandwich on sprouted bread. To continue talk about life off the court, I asked what life after Professional Volleyball may look like for her: “The elements of my life will stay the same but will just have different contexts -- Family, volleyball, fitness, travel, charity work, etc. I am making a big push to develop my brand and spread the awareness in the next years. I aim to help my sport grow in scope and prestige for both the beach and indoor disciplines. My dream is for the AVP Tour to be HUGE and for our country and the world to embrace and support the sport every year, not just every four years with the Olympics. I have some truly amazing sponsors (Asics, Wilson, Oakley) who take up a large space in the volleyball world and I hope to help their growth efforts and hope to partner with them on our Academy that we will create in the upcoming years. We want to give back, because we can and because we’ve been given so much! The thought of our own Academy, which focuses on helping people to get the best out of themselves and their lives. It’s a beautiful goal of ours.” Always a curious one about the origins of a nickname, I couldn’t help but ask where her nickname “Six-Feet of Sunshine” comes from: “Casey called me “Sunshine” when we first started dating and he addressed me as “SixFeet of Sunshine” when he’d write me letters. The day he asked me to marry him, the first thing I noticed on the gold band with which he proposed, was the inscription “Six-Feet of Sunshine”. “He’s the cutest. Always has been, always will be.” With a nickname like that it’s no wonder she shines so bright when talking about her loved ones and those who have played instrumental roles in helping her to achieve such greatness.

SUMMER’S MASS EXODUS OF PEOPLE FLOCKING TO BEACHES WILL SOON BE IN FULL SWING, AND LIKE AN OLD ROUTINE BEING WORKED OVER, YET AGAIN, BEACHGOERS HAVE THEIR SIGHTS SET TO ATTAINING PEAK PHYSIQUE. IN OTHER WORDS, CHECKOUT LINES AT THE LOCAL FRESH PRESSED JUICERY ARE GETTING OUT OF CONTROL AND GYMS ARE SEEING THE RETURN OF SOME FAMILIAR FACES. I recently sat down with Kevin Doran, Co-Owner of P-fit Gym in Venice, CA, to gain some perspective and find out what mistakes trainers and clients commonly make. With more than 25 years of experience in training athletes, celebrities and people looking to improve their overall health and wellness, Kevin has pretty much seen it all. Given his area of expertise in corrective exercise and routine development, I was curious to get his take on things. First things first, “most people don’t nail down what their goal is,” said Kevin. Furthermore, those with a defined goal “don’t do any research or give any thought as to how to get to that goal. People perform random acts of fitness and they want a specific result, but they have to ask themselves if any of what they’re doing is specific for what their goals are? It’s great to be active, but it’s not going to get them to their goal if they don’t have a plan. Once they SUMMER FASHION issue - BELLOmag.com
have a plan they can execute that plan efficiently and safely.” In other words, without a fitness goal you’re essentially wondering in the dark - flip the switch and make sure you know where you’re going. If you’re going to hire a trainer, or already have one, make sure it’s the right fit. Kevin cautions, “Some trainers are so bent on giving the client a hard workout that they’re not really giving them the right workout - they’re not teaching them.” A conflict of philosophy will result in the wrong approach. “The whole process [as a trainer] is to learn a client’s strengths and weaknesses, and that can’t be done through a 30-minute consultation.” Kevin continues, “The trainer should develop a routine that the client is going to be able to use as a foundation for their wellness program, but not for three, six, or nine months; for years. “ However, there is some responsibility on the end of the client to inform the trainer of what their specific goal is, or to work with the trainer to define one if needed, otherwise “it’s almost impossible to develop the right routine,“ said Kevin. Following fitness trends can be more mentally stimulating than physically. According to Kevin, “people are led to believe that they need to constantly change their routine because their body will adapt to it.” He disputes this belief by offering, “it’s very hard for the average person to get stagnant and for their body to have adapted to a routine in two or three weeks.” Not spending enough time, effort and energy learning to do an exercise correctly creates a wavering approach of inconsistency that may limit the body’s ability to master exercises thus affecting progression
with any routine. Kevin states “anything that anyone does with any success is usually a consistent and monotonous routine.” When it comes to classes, he encourages them, but warns “if you have a class of 30 people and the instructor is fit and he/she sees the same familiar faces in the class, he/she is going to gear their class towards a certain level of fitness, and if you’re a novice you’ll be striving to keep up with that class and it may not target the areas you need to work on, it may overstress areas, it doesn’t always address what your needs are.” Kevin reiterates, “Just because a class was difficult and you put up a good sweat doesn’t mean that it was beneficial for what your goal is.” Like selecting a trainer, make sure you’re also choosing the right intensity level, instructors, and timing within your routine, when it comes to group classes. The way our bodies adapt to an exercise and the way our bodies adapt to movement is pretty similar from person to person. “What makes us truly different is how we approach our routine, how we think of ourselves, the mental aspects, that’s what is so different” Kevin adds. “Fitness isn’t about numbers, it’s not weights and measurements - it’s a lifestyle. Not everybody is comfortable being labeled with a number. Some people don’t want to look at their scale and be defined by it. Other people are very methodical and need to have numbers present. Everybody is different in that sense, but our bodies aren’t all that different. Exercise and health shouldn’t be a sacrifice.” Whatever your goals, make it a long-term commitment - make it a lifestyle, and remember, once you set your mind to it, the body will follow.
