introduction In the age of geo-location apps, Apple’s ‘Siri’ and the increasing dependence on coded infrastructures, it stands to reason that these functions will continue to combine and grow more vital in our day-to-day lives - “they [coded relationships] actively shape people’s daily interactions and transactions, and mediate all manner of practices in entertainment, communication, and mobilities” (Code/Space, p.9). By taking the ‘transitory population’ of Salford, we can look at a select cross-section of those at the extremes of this dependence. Through a greater reliance on coding, can the importance of physical location be reintroduced?

Through consideration of the fringes of Salford, we find the phenomenon of corporate appropriation. The physical identity of the areas boarding Manchester City become blurred with the branding of large companies who situate themselves in the ‘transitory territory’ that divides the two distinct cities.

In a similar way to the cost of land throughout the area, the spread of large chain businesses such as Starbucks and McDonald’s is concentrated largely on the Manchester side of the river. Whilst this can be partially attributed to the difference between Salford’s residential nature and Manchester’s heavy commercial base, it can also be linked to the development of the areas, the demographics of their main populations and the needs of those communities.

These are some of the key destinations for those staying the in hotels, along with conference centres, such as Manchester Arena and Manchester Central, and the business district. However, some people observed seemed to be seeking reasonably priced food, suggesting that their movement into Manchester, suggesting that their choice of direction was due to expediency and expectation of that area of Manchester, rather than personal preference.

Who? Focusing on the transitory population, who are the most heavily dependant on this new personal assistant software.

These are the section of population who likely to be the most influenced by suggestions to visit.

Where?

Whilst working on a global scale, the software will have the most impact upon those travelling to stay in the transitory territory

and

therefore

have

the

most

effect

upon

the

territory and Salford itself. Due to the geo-location aspect of the software, there will be no more confusion as to just where you are. Upon crossing the river Irwell into Salford, your personal assistant will factor the local area into its equations and adjust its suggestions accordingly.

Why? To address the blurring of perception around the boundaries of Salford, and whether informing those visiting the transitory territory

will

affect

their

behaviour.

Through

logical

suggestions based on spending patterns, eating habits and location, the software will suggest locations within Salford itself. By raising awareness of the area in the transitory population and removing the ability for chains to appropriate the area, the area becomes reclaimed by Salford.

When observing the movement of the transitory population it became apparent that they spent the majority of their time in Manchester, mainly for work and leisure. This led to the decision that the programme will try and introduce the transitory population to spend their leisure time within Salford. This led to a restaurant being part of the programme, The idea of introducing a Market Place was included as this would relate to the history of the site and allow for the opportunity for a wide community to form within the transitory territory.

Finally, a hotel that is designed for a future coded work lifestyle was introduced.

How the produce is stored when transported and the type of produce results in varying distances in which certain types of produce can be grown from.

As the radius for meat is the smallest, means of faster transportation (such as rail) will be taken into consideration to ensure that sufficient supply is available.

Transportation history Looking at the history of the transitory territory reveals that the site was once a key location for the delivery of goods in to Manchester / Salford. It featured Bus Stations, Exchange Train Station and Warehouses.

The only part of this history of the site that remains is the River Irwell and a reduced amount of rail lines. My programme will reintroduce the different speeds of transportation that featured on the site for the transportation of the produce to the Market Place.

The increase of code in the work place has led to a territory in Salford that has undefined boundaries and if often branded as part of Manchester.

This has resulted in a territory that is not used by the Salford and Manchester population and is mainly accommodated by a transitory population that are only in the city for a few days.
