CHRIS LANGLOIS Since graduating from art school at the University of Newcastle in 1990, Chris Langlois has held 35 solo exhibitions throughout Australia, the first being at the Watt Space Student Gallery at the University of Newcastle, has been curated into countless group exhibitions and has exhibited as a finalist in many art prizes including Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. His curiosity and intense study of the Australian landscape has remained constant and engaged. In 1993, Newcastle Art Gallery honored him with his first solo exhibition in a major public gallery. In 2001, Land Sea Sky, a large survey exhibition spanning his work to date was held at Metro Arts in Brisbane that then, in the following year, toured to Newcastle Art Gallery. In his 25 years as an artist, Langlois’s work has deepened further across all aspects of his practice, swinging like a pendulum, from ‘nothingness’ to realism, from ambiguous, atmospheric sky and seascapes to literal landscapes of somewhere, which could be anywhere, and back again. His works defy specific geographical reference and while often inspired by places, they transcend time and space to become much more about personal experience. Characterised by subtle shifts of light and space, they explore the land and sea, and often envelop the viewer through their large.

Chris Langlois Points in Time, a major survey exhibition featured more than 30 works exploring Chris’s signature themes of the romantic, melancholy and beauty, covering the 10 year period up to 2013 is touring regional galleries throughout Australia in 2013-14. Galleries included Manly Art Gallery and Museum, Gippsland Art Gallery, Hamilton Regional Gallery, Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, Gold Coast City Art Gallery and Orange Regional Gallery. Accompanying the exhibition is a 112 page catalogue that illustrates Langlois’ work in more detail as well as essays by the curators Katherine Roberts and Simon Gregg. Chris Langlois’ work is represented in public collections including Bendigo Art Gallery, Newcastle Art Gallery, Campbelltown Art Gallery, Manly Art Gallery and Museum, Gold Coast City Art Gallery, Gippsland Art Gallery, Maitland City Art Gallery, Glasshouse Regional Art Gallery (Port Macquarie), Parliament House, Canberra, The University of Newcastle; University of Technology, Sydney, Artbank, as well as numerous corporate and private collections. He lives and works in Sydney. Chris currently lives and works in Avalon, NSW.
