Put your Feet Up in Style With a little creativity, you can turn your coffee table into a fun upholstered ottoman

love to entertain. My other half and I host every Thanksgiving, every Super Bowl and countless pau hanas and dinners throughout the year. That’s why when it came time to buy living room furniture, we went big. Our sectional is roughly the size of two twin beds and has held up to eight people at once. After dinner with friends recently we came back to our place and assumed our regular positions, sprawled out on the couch with our feet up on the coffee table. It had been a long day, so I propped mine up with a throw pillow. Then it dawned on me that an upholstered ottoman might make more sense than a hard coffee table. Not only is it more comfortable for resting your legs after a long day, but it can also serve as extra seating when needed. Luckily, I found out that converting a coffee

If you want to change up the color, now is the time to paint the legs as well. Then, add wood to frame the ottoman around the sides so that the width all around matches up with the tabletop. This will ensure that it is straight all the way down. Next, get 2-inch high-density foam and trim it to fit the top of the ottoman. A serrated knife works well for the cutting. Use spray adhesive to glue the foam directly to the top of the table. Repeat these steps to

Warm up your home’s exterior with siding Y

our home is your haven and refuge from a noise-filled world. When you pull into your driveway, how does the exterior of your home make you feel? Is it inviting? Or do you shudder at the thought of a weekend full of housework? The exterior of your home gives you a first impression, which not only sets the tone for its indoor feel, but also contributes to the long-term value. Few investments are greater than homeownership, and

there are upgrades you can do to not only increase your home’s value, but create lasting comfort and efficiency as well. This will make it feel like an inviting place, and that feeling begins from the outside. Give your home a fresh look with new siding. The benefits are plentiful and the rewards are ongoing. It is an upgrade that will protect your home year-round, while providing you with efficiency your budget will love. Here are some more benefits:

• Easy maintenance. The acrylic, vinyl Craneboard® siding from Exterior Portfolio looks like wood, but won’t weather or attract pests. It doesn’t need to be painted and can simply be sprayed with a hose if needed. With outdoor siding, you will immediately feel your chore list get a little lighter without the need for constant upkeep.

fortable when it drops. The moisture management system doesn’t trap water and allows it to evaporate so your home can breathe easy, which is a must in Hawaii’s tropical climate.

• Durability. Exterior Portfolio’s Craneboard® siding protects your home from the elements, whether it is a wind gust of up to 200 mph or rambunctious kids playing ball. Its insulating properties are not only energy-efficient, sound-proof and impact-resistant, but they also help keep all those things that go “thump” during the day or night quiet.

• Warranty. Before committing to a home improvement project, make sure you understand the warranty. Windows Hawaii guarantees the installation over the lifetime of your home, and the manufacturer warranties the product being installed on your home.

Siding is a worthy investment, whether you plan to stay in your home and desire comfort and efficiency, or are looking to sell and want it to stand out. Windows Hawaii offers top-quality brands, is backed by more than five years of experience in Hawaii, and has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. RACHEL BREIT PHOTO

He eventually opened his own business and workshop there before deciding to move to Hawaii in 2000. The skillful craftsman worked for various local companies until deciding to build his own construction team. Cao, with the help of his son, Andy, formed Hua Xia Construction in August 2008 and the duo, along with a team of experienced workers, has been assisting local home and business owners with their building and remodeling needs ever since. “In China and Japan, we can see many historic construction (projects) that were built a thousand years ago, but are still solid and workable, said Andy Cao. “Our company would like to help our customers build or remodel their homes like that. and by prospective customers noticing other finished projects. “Most clients will see a house we’ve built or remodeled in the past as an example of our workmanship, said Andy. “We feel confident working as a family to make our clients happy. Hua Xia is capable of handling both commercial and residential jobs, although brand new construction of and renovations to homes have been the most popular requests as of late.

Andy says that his company can accommodate various requests, from kitchen and bathroom additions to adding extra stories and rooms to existing structures and even building new houses. Hua Xia will handle the design and permitting process all the way through completion of the project, building quality structures from the ground up — or in some cases, from the inside out. Tropical Wholesale is a local, licensed general contractor and has been installing windows for more than 30 years in Hawaii. The company will be here throughout the following 10 years. All its employees complete window-design training to ensure

TROPICAL WHOLESALE contact // 263-1252 • 292-2942 web // twoahu.com email // tropicalwholesale@hawaii.rr.com you will get the right window and door design for your home. Tropical Wholesale introduced the first vinyl window in Hawaii and it’s the first expert manufacturer of the product locally. The company has had more than 10,000 customers in Hawaii (on Oahu and the neighboring islands of Maui, Kauai, the Big Island and Lanai).

Tropical Wholesale distributes Simonton windows and doors. Simonton is rated No. 1 by J.D. Power for customer and builder satisfaction. Simonton has the only lifetime warranty in Hawaii that covers all materials, labor, hardware and workmanship. Read the fine print of other factory warranties: They tend to void Hawaii for warranties. Do not be fooled by a fasttalking salesperson. The company is an authorized service provider for Simonton windows and doors. Waiting for an expert’s decision from the Mainland is unnecessary. Tropical

Wholesale can make that decision while providing the best service to every customer in Hawaii. Tropical Wholesale is 100 percent locally owned and operated with three generations serving Hawaii’s friends and neighbors. The company is a Costco contractor. The Bigger Picture There are no guarantees in life or in feng shui. But by working with clear intentions, you can gain a greater perspective of life’s challenges

ple’s positioning to “improve the flow,” and at the end of the day, we felt good and parted ways on a happy note. Jordan’s vision, fueled by desire, was positive change in the form of employee productivity, increased clients and profitability. However, the following Monday, she called to tell me that the office had been broken into and computers and other items were stolen. Although she was being nice, I could tell by her voice that she was questioning my effectiveness at creating positive change through feng shui. I told her that I was sorry to hear about the break in, but I was certain that somehow it would turn out better than it seemed in the moment. This was not what she expected or wanted to hear, but sometimes change comes in forms that we do not recognize. I asked her to trust in the bigger picture.

with

Alice Inoue

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Why is it that sometimes feng shui “works” and sometimes it does not?

hat a great question! Many times people ask me if I can “guarantee” results and are surprised when I say that I can offer no guarantees. This is a great opportunity for me to explain why feng shui may work in some instances and not in others. Feng shui is not magic. In some cases, you may experience an instant result that seems like magic, but any tangible manifestation is actually set into motion long before the feng shui action is implemented.

W

Inner and outer You see, feng shui works on your inner and outer environments. You have to make changes to your outer environment, meaning your physical surroundings, as well as your inner environment, meaning your life, thoughts and intentions. When the inner environment is operating with clear intent, and the outer environment is set up to support it, “magic happens” in the form of instant results. Making outer adjustments — moving furniture, adding color, or removing dead plants or certain pictures — without emotional investment diminishes the optimal effect because the inner and the outer environments are not working together.

Intention is key In making feng shui changes to your environment, setting the best intention is integral. Your thoughts and intentions can be considered invisible energy patterns that affect you and everything around you. Intention fueled by desire will aid in focusing your intention. To help illustrate this, imagine clearing out your closet. If your intention lacks desire and is just about getting the job done, it might be expressed like this: “I hate cleaning my closet, but I need more space.”You may get the physical

result you are seeking, an uncluttered closet, but your inner thoughts will diminish the energy flow you are seeking. If your intention is expansive, and positive, it might be expressed like this: “I hope to gain new opportunities for expansion by clearing out my closet.” That positivity creates optimal physical results and optimal energy flow. Other reasons Feng shui may or may not work for many reasons, but the following top three come to mind: • Having a superstitious and lazy mindset: Feng shui is not about superstition and does not support laziness. Do not fall prey to thinking that all you need to do is hang a picture of a fish for wealth, and money will magically appear. • Allowing too much clutter, dust and dirt to accumulate: Clutter, dust and dirt impede the flow of energy, and too much of any

one of these creates blockages. You can do all you want on the surface, but clutter, dirt or dust create stagnant energy that will drag you down. • Doing feng shui out of desperation: Akin to having the wrong intention, doing feng shui in desperation for a given result will not work. For example, if you sense that your spouse is about to give up on the relationship, putting love figurines all over the house to revive the love is unlikely to work. Feng shui is not a “last ditch effort” to make your life work. The bigger picture Feng shui doesn’t always unfold in the way you imagine. As in life, always consider the bigger picture. Many years ago I had a consultation with a woman I’ll call Jordan, who owned a small business with a few employees. She wanted my help because things in her business were stagnant and she felt she “needed a change.” We had a great time discussing clutter-clearing techniques, moving furniture and shifting peo-

A week later I checked back with Jordan a week later, and she had good news. Her insurance policy covered the losses, and with the reimbursement, she was able to purchase new computers and update her database and some software. The burglary also provided her with an opportunity to update her business practices, something she had been procrastinating about. She said, “Alice, you were right. I needed a change. It did not come in a way I expected, but it was exactly what I needed. I feel more on track than ever.” In Jordan’s case, by making the outer changes, her “inner” intent manifested, just not in the way she had expected. Soon after, her business grew, and she moved to a bigger office.

It is always good to remember that nothing is guaranteed in life (or in feng shui), but if we trust, no matter what the result, the bigger picture supports us in every way.

DIY tricks for your bathroom renovation W hen it comes to home improvement, Americans have embraced doing it themselves — in a big way. Among homeowners who plan to make improvements, 64 percent say they will do it themselves, according to American Express’ Consumer Spending and Saving Report. Yet one area of home improvement continues to give even adventurous and confident DIYers pause — bathroom renovation. “Many people who don’t think twice about installing flooring or cabinetry or even tiling on their own, still feel they need a professional to upgrade their bathrooms,” said Gray Uhl, director of design for American Standard. “However, with the availability of easy-to-install products, like no-tools toilets and Speed Connect faucets, bathroom upgrades are well within the abilities of most do-ityourselfers.” If you’re considering remodeling a bathroom, here are quick, easy ways to spruce up your bathroom yourself and still end up with professional quality results.

Start small: the power of bath accessories When you think of bathroom accessories, towels and toothbrush holders likely come to mind. But anything that enhances the look of your bathroom decor can function as an accessory. Simple moves like swapping out dated cabinet hardware (or adding it where there was none) can help transform the look and feel of the bath. Switching out a boring mirror with a beveled option can turn a functional background element into something eye-catching. Or, dress up an existing mirror by adding a frame. It’s easy to find mirror framing kits online or in your favorite home improvement store. Keep thinking creatively when it comes to accessories, and imagine what you could do in the shower area. If your shower is a tub/shower combination, replacing a standard straight curtain rod with a curved one not only creates an elegant appearance, it can give you more elbow room while you’re using the shower. If you have a shower stall with a door, consider swapping a plain glass door with a

The WaterSense-certified Champion HETs use 20 percent less water than standard toilets without losing any flushing power. Organize, maximize a small bath

T

he bath serves a variety of uses, from a functional room to a serene sanctuary, a storage facility to a salon. To help keep your bath feeling more serene and less insane, follow these ideas to help improve your organization, maximize space and even add a bit of style.

• Hidden helpers. While space underneath the vanity offers room for storage, this area is a glutton for disorganization. Remove everything and toss any items you don't need. Then use baskets or bins to create places for everything.

• Hotel inspiration. The next time you’re staying in a hotel, take note of the amenities offered and incorporate them into your bathroom. Did you love using the wall-mounted, magnifying mirror? Enjoy the convenience of storing the hair dryer on the wall? These same bath accessories are available for your home.

• Get hooked. Installing robe hooks is inexpensive and easy. They come in a variety of styles and finishes to match your bathroom. If you share your bath with children, be sure to install a few lower on the wall.

Set the Stage to Sell Here are some staging tips for open houses and photo shoots that will make your home utterly irresistible to buyers this summer

nyone in real estate will tell you the best time to sell a home is during the summer months. If you’re planning to sell, here are some tips for staging your home for a photo shoot or open house. I’ve talked to you about the beach house in Waialua. Although it’s not for sale, I furnished and staged it for the reveal party for the family and photo shoot. The money shot was the oceanfront outdoor setting. A sod lawn was installed and we positioned a teak swing by the naupaka hedge. Just because it’s an interesting swing and you have a fantastic view of the ocean does not make this a picture-perfect moment. We took a couple of extra steps to ensure that picture-perfect moment. Adding touches like pillows that tie in with the ocean and greenery, a beach bag, sun hat and flip-flops positioned as if someone has joyfully stepped out of them to cartwheel on the lawn. In the kitchen window, we created another vignette that always makes me smile. Many people stage kitchens with fruit

A

bowls that add color and life, and make granite countertops sing. The added touch here is the two birds perched on the windowsill. They’re simple wooden birds, but

their silhouette as you’re looking out at the ocean is perfect. Even with the woven shades drawn, because the birds are recessed in the sill, you still see that silhouette, whether you’re indoors or out. It’s as if they have a permanent perch in the house. When you stage a scene, consider not just the setting, but the lifestyle. Who would be drawn to this image? What would they like to see? Choose a few accessories to incorporate without making the scene look too busy. And look for unexpected touches that will bring a smile to a potential buyer’s face. Preparing a home for sale often involves a photo shoot. If the real estate company is sending a photographer to take MLS photos, it’s very much worth your time to be there. Think of the shoot as a collaboration between you and the photographer. You want your home to look as good as possi-

ble, so you need to be prepared, patient and courteous, and sort of act as their assistant to get the best possible shots. Let’s say you’re shooting your living room, and the photographer takes a picture from one angle. When he or she moves to shoot another angle, now the coffee table needs to be moved as well so it looks more centered, or the candlestick needs to be moved so it doesn’t look like it’s attached to the wall. That’s your job. The home should be clean, cleared of personal items and uncluttered. On the day of the photo shoot, try to have fresh flowers and fruit to bring life into the bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and dining area. If you’re going to be your own photographer, do all of the above, and while taking photos, look at them in as large a format as possible so you can see the small details, then reposition your accents. If you’re using your phone, email the photos to yourself and open them up on your computer. Rooms and vignettes may look great in person, but staging for an open house is very different from staging for photographs. For more staging ideas, go to cathyleestyle.com and click on our interior design portfolio. You’ll see many interior and exterior shots that I’ve staged and had photographed by amazing photographers, including Justin Dotson. Don’t wait until the last minute. Before the day of your photo shoot, take pictures of your space and look at them with a critical eye. What colors do you need? Do you need more greenery? Less furniture? What can you do to make it picture perfect? And then do it.

Landscaping adds beauty and value to your property W hen you pull up to the curb in front of a house, whether it’s your own home or a house you are thinking of buying, the first thing you notice is the yard. As you walk towards the front door, the feel and artistry of the landscaping around you can put you in a peaceful and happy frame of mind. If you are visiting a house that you are thinking of buying, the landscaping surrounding it will create a strong first impression and set the tone for the rest of your visit. Like an exquisite book cover design, aesthetically appealing landscaping can give you a good feeling about what’s inside the house. For all of these reasons, it is important to have a well-landscaped yard, especially if you are thinking of selling your house. In the past, landscaping may have been limited to grass, hedges and trees, but with the trend toward outdoor living, it has evolved into an important part of the design and functionality of a home. This is especially true in Hawaii, where we are fortunate to be able to be outdoors year-round. A well-landscaped yard can contribute to sustainable living by including edible plants and vegetation that helps to keep pests away. It can even minimize flood damage by incorporating proper drainage. When the basics are all in place, an outdoor kitchen and seating area can go even further to enhance your outdoor experience and make the outside your new inside. Once you have completed your landscaping, proper maintenance is no different than maintaining any other part of your house. Keep track of the plants that aren’t doing well and communicate with your landscaper. Some plants might needs to be changed so they will thrive, or it might be better to plant something different. Some plants that

grow in clumps are easy to separate and transplant, which will save you the cost of buying new plants. Maintenance should also include regularly de-thatching the lawn, which helps aerate the grass so it can grow into a thick, lush turf. Check out www.LanaiScapes.com for information about grass types and irrigation so you can see the best choice for your environment and soil. Smart landscaping will not only bring you personal satisfaction, it will increase the value of your home. The time to start landscaping is not when you are getting ready to sell your home, it should already be put in place well before then. Remodeling a bathroom or kitchen can be done at the last minute to increase the value of your house, but it may not have the same positive impact on a potential buyer if there is not a strong first impression of the landscaping to go along with it. Call LanaiScapes, a company that can help you to develop a plan that will not only turn your yard into a luxurious living space, but increase the value of your house when you are ready to sell.

ALTERNATIVE ELECTRIC MAY 26 • 2013 21

A ray of light in home energy P hotovoltaics is creating quite a buzz among Hawaii homeowners. Also known as PV, photovoltaics is a form of solar energy. “But instead of heating your water, it actually produces electricity,” explained Chad Matsumoto, who co-owns Alternative Electric with Bronson Apana. Although the up-front costs may be high, there are many benefits that make PV a wise overall investment, and Matsumoto offers these examples:

Preserves natural environment and improves air quality Hawaii’s electricity is mainly generated from fossil fuels. By producing electricity with a PV system, Hawaii can decrease oil demand and green house gas emissions. Investment purposes A PV system is one of the best investments a homeowner can make. After tax credits, the payback on a PV system is approximately six to eight years, and maybe even sooner as the cost of electricity rises. After the system pays for itself, a homeowner can enjoy 17-19 years of virtually maintenance-free electric production. A PV system also increases the value of a home. It increases equity and it’s a hot seller, according to some Realtors.

Think outside the fuse box to save energy ou’ve replaced your home’s 20-year-old windows with new, Energy Star-rated models, upgraded to electricity-sipping appliances and there’s not a single incandescent light bulb to be found anywhere in your house. You may be wondering what more you can do to further reduce your home energy bills. When you’ve covered the basic and obvious ways to trim energy use at home, it’s time to start thinking outside the fuse box. Here are three unique home improvements that can help make your house even more energy-efficient.

Y

Put a stake through the heart of vampire power Even when they’re turned off, electrical devices draw power as long as they’re plugged in. “Vampire power” or “standby power” refers to the electricity wasted in this manner. In developed countries, standby power probably accounts for 5 to 10 percent of residential energy use, according to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Fortunately, vampire power is a relatively easy problem to solve. In many cases, simply unplug the power cord — a great solution for your cellphone charger or the coffee pot. When an appliance gets frequent use, however, constantly unplugging and replugging it may not be convenient. In those situations, a simple home improvement may be in order. Connect outlets to wall switches that make it easy to turn the device off or on at the outlet. Or, you can plug appliances into a device that, in turn, plugs into the outlet and stops electricity leakage. Add motorized shutters to windows People add motorized rolling shutters to their homes for a variety of reasons, from enhancing privacy and security by making it harder for burglars to break in through windows,

to protection against intense sunshine and hurricane winds. But did you know shutters can also boost your home’s energy efficiency? Automating motorized shutters with a sun sensor, like those available from Somfy Systems, allows you to further improve energy efficiency by raising or lowering shutters throughout the day to fine-tune heat retention. And, for the truly eco-minded homeowner, Somfy’s new solar powered AutoSun uses solar energy to power the shutter motor — so saving energy doesn’t require you to use electricity. Learn more at www.somfysystems.com. Open the door to energy savings Your home’s front door is the first impression visitors get when they arrive on your doorstep, but it’s also a potential source of heat and energy loss. Replacing an old, inefficient or poorly insulated door with an Energy Star-qualified door can pay off with significant heat retention and energy savings. When looking for a replacement door, insulated doors made of fiberglass or steel, filled with an insulating core such as polyurethane foam, are more energy-efficient than traditional wooden doors. Doors should also fit well into the doorframe, and use weather stripping to block drafts. Doors wear out, lose efficiency and need to be replaced, according to the Residential Energy Services Network. Replace your old front door with an Energy Star-qualified one, and you may qualify for a federal tax credit of up to 30 percent of the cost of the door, according to EnergyStar.gov. Improving your home’s energy efficiency is the right thing to do — for both the environment and your wallet. With a bit of creativity and the right home improvements, it’s possible to maximize your home’s energy efficiency.

Microwave hoods Most brand-new kitchens don’t include a microwave, and the appliance is usually bought as an afterthought and set up on the counter near the closest electrical outlet, which may not be the most convenient place. Not only does a microwave take up valuable work space on the countertop, it may also look awkward and out-of-place. Before the invention of the microwave hood combo, most kitchens weren’t designed with a microwave in mind. Now, microwave hoods are the new appliance to include in your kitchen. However, they are not the easiest items to install or replace if they break. If you plan to go with the simple range hood in your kitchen design, but also plan to have a separate microwave, a microwave wall cabinet designed to hold the product will clear up much needed counter space. Wine racks Wine racks are a great aesthetic addon to any kitchen. They break up the util-

stack? A Plate rack cabinet may be the solution for your kitchen. It will relieve the struggles of having to pull out the entire stack from a wall cabinet or reach for the top plate in a stack. If you store dishes in your countertop dish rack, plate rack cabinets will allow you to free up valuable counter space and give a more open look to your kitchen. Plate rack cabinets enable easy access to your everyday plates. A plate rack has individual slots that will store plates vertically. The slots allows you to grab plates and put them away with ease. A great place for this cabinet in your kitchen design is either above your sink or next to it. All your plates can be dried and put in their own place as you wash and dry them.

Is your solar investment an aesthetically pleasing one? BY MELANIE MEI tudies confirm that the wealthy are wealthy for a reason: Not only do they grab every opportunity, but they know when to take risks as well. Mr. Jones is a successful Honolulu broker whose livelihood revolves around helping others gain wealth. Though he generates more income than most, he’s not immune to the rising cost of electricity. He can afford the finest things in life, including the most expensive PV system, but wisely

S

invested his money in Solar Frontier CIS panels, which are 100 percent made and manufactured in Japan. “I travel to Japan often and know firsthand about their quality standards,” said Jones. “Solar Frontier, being part of a huge global company like Shell, speaks volumes. With China flooding the PV market with cheap panels and American companies selling Chinese panels under the guise of ‘U.S.-made’ ones, I was quite nervous when shopping for PV for my home.” Jones encouraged his clientele to install

PV as an “addition to their investment folder.” As a homeowner, he realizes the long-term value of PV. “I liked the fact that Risource Energy took a risk on integrating with second generation PV modules and I now refer them to everyone!” When it comes to a home’s market value, appearance is key. The CIS modules have a smooth, black exterior and are a popular selection world-wide among

architects and property owners because of their attractiveness. The modules gain high yields in hot locations due to the excellent temperature co-efficient. “I know I got the best buy available on the current PV market ... the Risource Energy design philosophy and CIS panels will add aesthetic value to any property. Black is timeless; it never goes out of style. “A four-year investment that increases your home’s resale value, is aesthetically pleasing, stimulates the local economy, lowers your carbon footprint and provides free electricity — that’s what I call an excellent Return on investment!” remarked Jones. Upgrade for life’s next phase o the words “aging in place” and “home improvement” conjure images of institutional-looking grab bars in bathrooms and overhead kitchen lights that could illuminate an airport runway? Many people eschew certain types of home improvements for the same reason others refuse to wear hearing aids — the negative connotations of age. Changes in mobility, vision, hearing and stability are a reality of growing older for many Americans. Certain types of home improvements can make your home safer and more comfortable as you age, allowing you to live there longer. From lovely skylights that fill rooms with vision-friendly natural light and fresh air to slip-resistant flooring in designer colors, those “aging in place” home improvements can be beautiful as well as functional. Here are a handful of aging-in-place upgrades that shout “fabulous” instead of “fogey”:

In the kitchen We all spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, and it's the room where we also do the most work. Upgrades that improve your ability to reach important appliances, enhance vision and boost safety will help you use your kitchen more efficiently for as long as possible. Age-related vision changes can necessitate increasing the amount of light in your kitchen. Task lights and under-cabinet lighting can focus illumination where you need it most, and hide discretely out of sight without disrupting the clean lines and unmarked beauty of kitchen cabinets. Overhead lighting is also important, but rather than opting for industrial-type lights that may cause harsh glare, consider introducing natural light. Research published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology suggests that natural light may be better for aging eyes than artificial light. A skylight is an upscale, beautiful home improvement that can benefit boomers with natural light. Skylights can also help improve indoor air quality. Most exposure to environmental pollution occurs by breathing indoor air, according to research by the Greenguard Environmental Institute. No leak solar powered fresh air

skylights, like those made by Velux America, not only provide healthful natural light, they also provide passive ventilation to reduce fumes, humidity and stale air. You can increase a skylight's energy efficiency with solar powered blinds. The complete daylighting system, plus installation, is eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. To learn more about these Energy Star-qualified skylights, visit www.veluxusa.com. In the bath Falls are a leading cause of injuries that result in hospitalization of older people. Most falls in the home occur in the bathroom, so taking precautions in this much-used room makes sense. Like them or not, grab bars improve safety in the bathroom. Fortunately, bathroom fixture manufacturers seem to understand the need for products that blend safety and beauty. It's now easy to find grab bars in a variety of attractive finishes and designs that complement your interior decor. Flooring is another opportunity to blend beauty and practicality in the bathroom. Replacing slick, traditional ceramic tiles with slip-resistant flooring such as stone, vinyl or textured ceramic tile, can be visually pleasing and safety-enhancing at the same time. MURAKAMI’S ROOFING MAY 26 • 2013 27

A company that keeps its promise here are some things that people appreciate when looking for quality service, but are hard to put into words. When it comes to finding a qualified roofer, you want a company that understands promises and a shared understanding of what is expected, what is the right thing to do and what you can rely on. Clifford Murakami, founder of Murakami’s Roofing, passed down the values that create the foundation of the Murakami’s Roofing Promise to his son, Clinton. Honesty, respect and being considerate make up the backbone of the promise, and each of the company’s crew members recommits to these values every day, helping them to build strong, sturdy roofs to protect families and their property. Here are the standards that make up Murakami’s Roofing Promise:

• Providing the best product for your budget and honestly presenting the risks and rewards of not repairing, repairing and re-roofing

T

• Thinking ahead and designing a roofing job to assist in problem situations (e.g. a rain gutter dumping water onto another part of the roof, which causes future issues)

• Going up on the roof with ladders, safety harnesses and the right shoes and protective gear are things Murakami’s crew members do every day. The rooftop is not a place for rubber slippers or wandering near the edge.

the way to do business

• Being fair and honest • Completing a job to the customer’s satisfaction because it’s the right thing to do

• Offering a free roof inspection and estimate by a professional roofing expert, because hidden surprises are not

• Offering a lifetime roof inspection, which assures that the business relationship will last a long time

• Not complaining is an important part of being respectful and considerate. There are no excuses for a job not done well.

The best seat in the house O riginating in 15th century France, a bidet is a plumbing fixture for personal cleansing that uses a stream of water to clean the body rather than toilet paper. The bidet’s popularity grew during the 1700s and it’s considered a must for most homes across Asia and Europe today. In Japan, it is estimated that even more than 80 percent of Japanese households have a bidet toilet installed. These bidets are commonly called Washlets — a brand name of TOTO Ltd. — and include many advanced features rarely seen outside of Asia. Most Americans have never seen a bidet. Those who have seen or experienced one generally have done so in an upscale hotel. The majority of Americans have never thought to install one in their own home, either — until recently. TOTO, the world’s largest bidet seat manufacturer, introduced the Washlet to the U.S. market in 1989. The modern bidet seat (Washlet) is an electronic seat that sits on a standard toilet and converts it into a complete sanitation system, often with more features than a free-standing bidet. The Washlet itself was invented by an American who saw that the U.S. needed a more hygienic way of cleaning up after one’s daily business on the throne. The Washlet’s design allows for a quick and compact conversion of one’s existing toilet that can be done in 28 • MAY 26, 2013

about 15 minutes without changing the existing plumbing. As Washlets grow in popularity throughout the world, the U.S. is finally starting to take notice of the usefulness and ease of cleaning with a Washlet. If you’re tired of plunging the toilet because someone in the family is flushing too much toilet paper, use a Washlet.

For those who live with extended family and need a way to keep their older family members independent in the one room we all wish to remain independent in, a Washlet is a godsend. The Washlet’s ability to gently cleanse without abrasion makes it beneficial to all walks of life. From those suffering from hemorrhoids to women who have recently given birth, as well as those who simply want a cleaner sanitary approach, the Washlet will surely keep its owners clean and happy. This product is also great for those looking to conserve. The average Washlet’s energy consumption is less than that of a 40w light bulb, and will most likely save its energy cost in toilet paper alone. TOTO has been manufacturing hightech Washlets for almost 35 years and for this reason it’s known as the premier Washlet manufacturer for the United States. For those in Hawaii looking to maximize their cleanliness, or those who wish to make better use of their time spent on the toilet, visit The Bathroom Store at 985 Dillingham Blvd. The Bathroom Store has been TOTO’s Premier Washlet distributor for more than 20 years. If you purchase a Washlet at The Bathroom Store during the month of June, you’ll receive special in-store savings.
