Come Home to Health 2. Open up and turn on the fans. The EPA recommends reducing indoor humidity to help safeguard against microbial growth. Open your windows and increase air circulation when possible. A/C units and dehumidifiers can also help. 3. Skip the fragrances. As nice as they may smell, synthetic fragrances can emit harmful chemicals into the air. In fact, a study at the University of Washington, Seattle, found that the average number of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) emitted by top air fresheners, detergents, soaps and the like was 17.1. What’s even more disturbing is that almost half of the 25 tested products generated at least one carcinogenic hazardous air pollutant of 24 deemed to have no safe exposure level, according to the EPA.

ince I got back from a trip in March, I’ve made a concerted effort to get healthier. I pencil in workout time as if it were a mandatory morning meeting and constantly remind myself that I’ll feel better afterward. I always do. I wind down by cooking and find it a fun challenge to transform otherwise fatty, highcalorie meals into lighter, nutritious fare. But getting and staying healthy go beyond working out and eating right. Elements around the home can be harmful to even the fittest and most nourished people. Think air quality and hazardous

materials. The good news is you can get a healthier home by incorporating some of these quick tips. 1. Vacuum with a HEPA filter. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters trap teeny tiny particles invisible to the naked eye. These include dust mites, allergens and even toxins such as lead and chemicals. Traditional vacuums re-circulate the small particles into your home’s air, but a HEPA filter traps the majority (more than 99 percent) of the particles. Look for filters labeled true or absolute for the best results.

4. Add plants. Studies by NASA, the Associated Landscape Contractors of America and other researchers show that houseplants can help to filter out common VOCs by acting as air purifiers. Plants such as aloe vera, spider plants and gerber daisies act as filters and help to remove potentially harmful air pollutants. 5. Opt for non-toxic cleaners.Take the guesswork out of which store-bought products contain harmful chemicals and make your own instead. Basic ingredients include baking soda, water, salt, lemon juice, essential oils and vinegar. Websites such as mnn.com and nationalgeographic.com have easy-to-follow recipes for any cleaning product you may need.

Hawaii Central offers unique PV Loan Special C

redit unions originated with the concept of “People Helping People.” Today that “people first” philosophy is the basis of the quality member service provided by Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union (HCFCU). HCFCU has been serving Hawaii for more than 75 years and recently converted to a community-based field of membership and is now available to all residents of Oahu. At HCFCU, the staff is continually looking for innovative ways to help members achieve their financial goals and upgrade their lifestyles. The rising cost of electricity has many looking to Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems for solutions. Although it’s a money saver in the long run, a PV installation represents a significant upfront cost. To address the need for financing, HCFCU recently added a Solar Photovoltaic Loan Special to its menu of loan

products. After reviewing the various types of solar financing that were available, the company took a different approach. Here’s what sets HCFCU’s Solar PV Loan Special apart from the rest:

• It does not require the use of your home’s equity. HCFCU’s PV loan program is offered as an Unsecured Personal Loan up to $50,000 rather than a Home Equity Line of Credit, which allows you to use the equity in your home for other improvements. • You’ll get the best price for your PV system. Unlike the extremely low or 0 percent financing offered by some lenders, the HCFCU Solar PV Loan Special does not come with hidden fees or mark-ups to the consumer or the solar contractor, who in turn passes these costs on to the consumer by increasing the overall price of the PV sys-

tem. Be sure to ask for “cash pricing” from your contractor. You could easily save thousands of dollars right from the start. • Work with the solar contractor of your choice. It is important to work with a solar contactor you trust. HCFCU does not limit your choices and will work with your solar contractor. • No payments are due for the first six months. (Interest will continue to accrue during that time). With no payments for six months, you can enjoy the benefits of your new PV system immediately. • Loan officers are quick to respond. As a

credit union, HCFCU is dedicated to providing the best service and the staff knows the importance of a fast turnaround. Responses are given in days, not weeks or months.

Owned and operated by its members, HCFCU owes its success and longevity to its loyal members and remains dedicated to providing quick personal service. For more information about Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union and its Solar PV Loan Special, call the Consumer Loan Department at 536-3677, visit 681 S. King St. or apply online at www.hccu.info. Hurry, as the PV Loan Special is only available for a limited time. HCFCU is federally insured by NCUA. Certain restrictions apply. APRIL 28, 2013 • 3

‘Enlightened’ system, in-phase with demand O ne of the most frequently asked questions by prospective solar electric system purchasers is: How many panels do I actually need? Many times people will choose the lowest number of panels feeling confident that will be enough. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t. Results from companies can vary. Amounts can differ depending on what area you live in, how much electricity you actually use on a daily basis, what type of inverters are being used and, of course, the PV panel’s production, measured by the number of watts that are delivered to your electrical system. EnergyPro has remained consistent in that all of our systems use Enphase microinverters. Enphase has established itself as the leader in microinverter technology and it offers outstanding support in the rare event that a problem occurs. The

company’s 25-year warranty is top in the industry and its inverters produce power at a very efficient rate. Enphase also offers an advanced monitoring system that enables users to see how its systems are working at any given moment. It produces real-world results and even offers e-mail alerts if an issue arises. Currently Enphase’s M215 microinverter is the strongest inverter and can be paired safely with up to a 260-watt panel. Through the Enphase monitoring system dubbed “Enlighten,” viewers are able to track individual panel production. This tool is invaluable in helping EnergyPro Hawaii calculate the perfect amount of panels a prospective customer might need in a specific area to completely offset their electrical usage. By studying previous installed systems all over Oahu, EnergyPro Hawaii has found a very powerful combination utilizing

In certain areas the company has seen an individual panel’s production reach 1.7 kW/H in a single day. ISLAND BATH WORKS

Bathtub conversions make room for safety BY MICHELLE LEE ach year in Hawaii, countless members of the elderly community suffer serious injuries after experiencing mobility-related accidents within the home. One of the leading causes of such accidents is a bathtub with walls built too high for the resident to safely step over. To alleviative the risk and emotional toll involved, Island Bath Works invites residents to invest in bathtub conversions allowing for safer movement at home. Bathtub conversion, a process that removes a portion of one’s existing bathtub to create a seamless opening, has greatly improved the quality of independent living for the elderly. As the only company in Hawaii dedicated to bathtub conversions, Island Bath Works ensures every customer a custommade, non-invasive process from beginning to end. The company services all islands.

satisfied customers within the local community. After experiencing a series of accidents, Elizabeth Wong and her husband James immediately called Island Bath Works owner Eric Thompson for assistance. “Our bathtub was too high and not having handlebars made it easy to slip,” said Elizabeth Wong. “After receiving a quote from several places, it was clear that Island Bath Works would provide the highest quality work within a reasonable budget and time frame.” Instead of reconstructing the entire bathtub from the ground up, bathtub conversion requires little to no demolition and there is minimal interference to the resident’s normal routine. Most jobs take one day to complete. “The whole process was so easy because the workmanship was extremely thorough and neat,” said Wong. “My husband and I enjoyed working with Eric very much.”

charge considerably less than most companies on the market. “Through our personal research, it was much easier financially to do bathtub conversion with Island Bath Works,” said Wong. “Other companies wanted to take apart the entire bathtub and pipes, which would have cost more than double and taken much longer.” In addition to bathtub conversions, Island Bath Works also provides bathroom refinishing. Customers may choose from a variety of different styles and materials. “After doing our bathtub conversion, Eric also refinished our tiles, the bathroom walls as well as the tub itself,” explained Wong. “We

AKAMAI ENERGY APRIL 28 • 2013 7

Keeping your home clean with solar energy W ith literally hundreds of solar companies to choose from, it’s very difficult to find a solar company that you can trust, let alone get a fair deal from. Oftentimes when you call these companies, they will try to persuade you with slick sales tactics and negotiations. Look no further. Akamai Energy is making it easy and affordable to go green with PV solar and has earned accreditation from the Better Business Bureau of Hawaii so you know you can trust it for all your PV solar needs. “We make it very easy for our customers,” said Richie Aqui, Akamai Energy’s managing director. “Give us a call and we’ll be happy to answer your questions. There’s never an obligation to purchase. The estimate is free and we’ll offer you a great price during your first phone call or visit with us. We have a highly experienced elec-

trical and racking team to give our customers the peace of mind that we will install your system as we would on our own home.” Along with Akamai Energy’s attractive residential and commercial PV solar systems, the company is proud to offer an exclusive nanotol cleaning solution that will ensure your panels are clean and efficient for years to come. Many solar operators believe that naturally cleaning solar modules through rain and wind is sufficient, and therefore no additional manual cleaning is required. This is an outdated perspective, however. Not cleaning your solar panels will often result in irreversible damage to the modules, a reduction in efficiency and a shortened lifespan of the equipment. To protect your investment and ensure peak performance, your solar panels need to be coated with Akamai Energy’s exclu-

An easy-to-apply transparent coating will leave your panels efficient and clean for up to three years with no additional maintenance required. New this year, Akamai Energy is proud to introduce the Kill-A-Watt box powersaving device, which allows you to save up to 25 percent or more on your electric bill

with no solar panels! It’s perfect for homes with limited roof space, limited budgets, commercial buildings, condos, rentals and business owners. SURFACE SHIELD

Prepare your roof for PV panels t seems like everywhere you go, people are talking about solar energy, and for good reason. More and more Hawaii homes and businesses are looking into solar installation to help fight rising energy costs. The number of homes and businesses installing solar panels has been on an enormous upswing during the past few years for both residential and commercial properties statewide, or might we say worldwide. And why not? With solar energy, homeowners receive great deals and tax credits and have their own mini power plant; these are definitely things to be excited about. Before installing a solar panel array, it is important to assess the condition of the existing roof the panels are going to be mounted to. By ensuring the integrity of the existing roofing system, you will avoid future problems such as leakage, repair or the need to remove panels to re-roof. Certain types of roofs, such as tile and wood shingle or shake roofs can present challenges to the solar contractor such as cracked tiles or loose shingles. By having your roof inspected and getting the necessary repairs done prior to solar installation, you can ensure that your roof is in proper condition for solar and less likely to cause you problems.

installation of a coating system. This watertight system ranges in price from roughly $3 to $5 per foot and holds material warranties ranging from five years to the lifetime of the structure. Coating your roof prior to solar installation creates a watertight membrane that will not allow water to penetrate and cause leakage in the future.

I

Standing seam metal For steeper roofing surfaces, Standing Seam Metal is the roof of choice when installing Solar. The seam allows the solar installer to fasten the panels to your roof using a special clip and therefore little to no penetrations into your new roof. The price range is $8 to $10 per foot.

SURFACE SHIELD contact // 396-9599 email // surfaceshield@hawaii.rr.com web // www.surfaceshieldroofing.com Your existing roof ’s warranty is another important factor to consider. Knowing the warranty of an existing roof is vital when deciding to go solar. If the warranty will expire soon or a homeowner has experienced persistent leakage, it is a good idea to install a new roof before making the investment in solar. Removing solar equipment to make repairs to a damaged roof can be quite costly. Therefore, it is important to know your warranty; what does it cover

and when does it expire? With this data, you will be able to make the right decision concerning your home and roof. Here is some information regarding roofing options from coatings to metal that Surface Shield Roofing Company offers.

Asphalt shingles Asphalt shingles also are a great option. They are cost-effective and have many great warranty options from 20 years to the lifetime of the structure. Pricing for this roofing system ranges from $3.50 to $5.50 per foot.

Here’s to a bright day he photovoltaic industry has been booming over the last few years. Most people now know what solar photovoltaics (PV) are, as they can be seen on rooftops throughout the state. As the price of electricity rises, more and more of us are considering PV systems for our own homes. Because a PV system is a big investment, we should do our research before committing to a specific solar provider, especially since PV companies are a dime a dozen. So what should we be concerned about when considering PV? First of all, what qualifies a company to install a PV system? The proper licensing is a necessity. To install PV, a C-13 electrical license is a must. There are a few ways to check online if a company has the proper licensing. Search through pvl.ehawaii.gov/pvlsearch/app or hawaii.bbb.org. A qualified electrician can tell you if your service needs to be upgraded, if your grounding system is up to par or if any electrical modifications should be made to accommodate the PV system. After all, you will be producing your own power and there is a lot of electrical wiring involved. Next, getting several estimates from different compa-

T

nies is always a good idea. From these estimates we can compare pricing and materials. Are the materials being used comparable to one another? Some companies may use roof flashings, while others may not. A properly installed flashing will ensure a leak-free roof penetration. After all, the bigger the system, the more roof penetrations will be made. Another important factor to consider is the PV panel manufacturer. PV panel manufacturers also are a dime a dozen. Manufacturers may state certain specifications for their panels, but how long have they been producing solar panels? Alternative Electric proudly installs Solar World Sun Modules. America’s largest solar manufacturer with more than 35 years of experience in the solarproduction industry. A PV system is a wise investment, but it’s more than just installing panels on a roof. Homeowners should do their homework before installing a system. After all, a PV system should last at least 25 years. Time spent researching will pay dividends for the lifetime of the PV system. For a free PV estimate or consultation, give Alternative Electric a call at 630-6741 or 285-3663.

BIG ROCK

Tropical tranquility in your own garden H ave you visited the most beautiful showroom on Oahu yet? If not, make some time to drop by. You will be pleasantly surprised and pleased that you did. Big Rock Manufacturing has been making rock products here on Oahu for more than 30 years. The owners, Bonnie Cooper and Brian Joy, first opened a small shop in March 1983 where they made lightweight stone veneer. They have since expanded the stone line to include all manner of stone garden and pond products. Big Rock was the first place here to offer homeowners a way to easily and inexpensively create their own ponds and waterfalls for home gardens without digging a hole for the pond. The above-ground pond trend was not intentional at the time, but rather a necessity, as Big Rock needed to find a way to display its ideas for ponds using the concrete showroom parking lot areas it inhabited. The owners decided to build up (rather than dig down) using concrete blocks to make the shape of the ponds. To make waterfalls, the duo simply used some of the many light-

weight boulders they had cast, and it worked like a charm. All customers needed to do if they wanted to make their own pond was to go home, lay out a shape on the ground using a rope or hose, measure the circumference, length and width and bring that back to Big Rock. Bonnie or Brian would then calculate what was needed, and from these simple three dimensions, ponds started springing up in yards across the Islands. The average pond — 5 by 8 feet — only takes a weekend to construct and is a wonderful, fun family affair. All you need is a CMU block, a heavy-duty rubber liner, some moss rock veneer to cover the cement block, a submersible pump and a waterfall boulder. Add a few affordable tiki torches and you have tropical tranquility

in the garden. Big Rock sells all the gear you need: liners, pumps, underwater lighting, filters, foggers to add the misty look and, of course, the cast stone to make it look natural. Add a few moss rock stepping stones leading up to the pond and you are done. Above-ground ponds have many advantages: grass clippings from mowing the lawn don’t fly into the pond, and you have a little area to sit and watch the fish. You can add small fish and a few water plants for a clear, healthy and naturally well-balanced pond. There’s no chance of mosquitos, either,

because the fish take care of that. Ponds are a wonderful addition to any home, and if you are ready to do the work yourself, they do not cost much. Something small with a nice waterfall makes all the difference in the world and adds life and music to your garden area. Drop by the showroom in Mapunapuna. You will see two ponds and many other displays for garden water features, such as water-boulders, Japanese garden bowls and many pre-cast waterfalls. There’s a map online if you are unfamiliar with the area, just search Big Rock Hawaii, or call 834-7625.

All The Small Things Living with someone else can be a challenge, especially when it comes to dealing with minutia — like whose taste in artwork really matters. To improve your relationship, try focusing on the big picture with

Alice Inoue

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: My husband and I are having a major disagreement about a particular piece of artwork he recently brought home that he loves and I hate. I read somewhere that it is bad feng shui to have ugly things in the house — which is why I’m writing to you. From the point of view of feng shui, is there anything I can tell him to make him agree to get rid of it? I think that if I could just convince him to get the painting out of our house and out of our lives, I would be happier — or at least less irritated. h! I understand where you are coming from and the frustration you are feeling, but to give you an informed opinion, I need more details. For example, certain images can be bad feng shui, depending on what they depict and where they are placed, but you didn’t mention what the image is or where it was placed. As for your basic question about using feng shui to persuade your husband to get rid of the painting, what one person likes, another person may hate; To say the painting is “right” or “wrong” is a judgment, not necessarily “good” or “bad” feng shui. Still, all is not lost. We can look at this in another way and hopefully find a balanced solution to your dilemma.

A

Reassign the meaning of the artwork Generally, when a difference of opinion exists as to whether or not something in a common area is energetically supportive, consider reassigning the meaning of the item in question to represent the love and respect you have for each other. For example, rate your dislike of the art on a scale of 1-10, with 10 representing the

highest level of dislike. Then, ask your husband to rate how much he likes the same piece of art, with 10 representing the highest level of like. If your level of dislike is lower than your husband’s level of like, compromise may be a little easier. Next, ask yourself if you love your husband enough to allow that art to represent your love for each other. If so, and you agree to let it grace your wall, you have the opportunity to transform how you see it — no longer an eyesore, but a gift of love. Doing this exercise gives the art a new symbolic meaning. Each time you see it, it will remind you of the love you have for your husband and how important he is to you;

Every time he sees it, it will remind him of the love you have for him, and how lucky he is to have you. The art will have become a reminder of love instead of an instigator of disharmony. This process can be effective for you, but only if you dissipate any emotional charge the painting has for you and clear up any symbolism the painting may have triggered in your subconscious. The artwork’s symbolic aspect Take this one step further, and ask yourself what it is about the artwork you dislike? Is it the style, the image, what it reminds you of? Or, are you simply annoyed that your husband failed to consult you first? I’d like to share a story to help you to understand why I ask these questions. I had a client whose husband purchased an image he thought of as a “peaceful scene” — a man alone in a rowboat on a lake at sunset, relaxing. My client however,

disliked the image. She told her husband that she did not like the photo and wanted him to take it down, but he refused, saying that he liked it, and, anyway, he was putting it up in “his area” of the house. Soon after, she invited me to her home for a feng shui consultation. When we got to her husband’s area, she asked if I would suggest that he remove that photo, feeling that he would “listen” to me. (People do this to me all the time.) I was curious as to why the image bothered her so much. At first, she gave me a lame answer; but, after some questioning, she shared that she felt it showed his true desire to be alone and foreshadowed his leaving her one day. When I asked her why she thought he would leave her, she became emotional and said that she had been nagging him a lot through the years and was afraid that she had gone too far. I mention this because sometimes our reaction to certain images goes deeper than mere dislike. Take a look at the image your husband purchased to see if it has any symbolism you can relate to. It may be that it is simply not your “style” or it could be something deeper. By being aware, you can gain even more from this experience.

The joys and challenges of living together It is never easy to live with someone whose tastes or style is completely different from yours, but stepping out of our own comfort zone and letting go of your ego can be expansive and a sign of growth. In every situation that upsets you, ask yourself what is truly important and put your focus on the bigger picture, not the minutia. As the stand-up comedian George Carlin once said, “Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweaty things.” Good advice.

How to choose a new floor

K

eep these tips in mind when selecting a new floor for your room makeover project:

• Light, neutral floor colors brighten a room and make it feel more spacious. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

• When selecting a floor color, consider the tones of furniture you have, but don’t feel that everything has to match. Contrasting tones make for a more pleasing design. • Brown, gray and white floor tones work with a greater variety of furniture colors and paints.

Design for the dogs Want to protect your home and provide comfort for your pet? Try these canine-friendly design ideas that will have your fuzzy sidekick feeling more at home

ogs are people too, of course. They’re part of our family. Never mind that sometimes they track dirt in, drool on the furniture and make mistakes. Why not give them the space they rightfully deserve? Here are some tips on how you can make your home beautiful and pet-friendly at the same time. Yes, I am talking about doggie décor!

D

Flooring If you’re going to build or remodel, take your four-legged friend into consideration. Carpet, especially looped carpet, is the worst for dogs. It catches their nails and retains odor and stains. If you need or want to go with carpet, consider a low-pile one that has a pattern to hide stains, or carpet tiles that you can swap out. Marble and travertine, no matter how well they’re sealed, are porous and will stain. Real hardwood flooring is beautiful, but can be easily scratched by claws. The most common-sense approach? Ceramic tile, vinyl sheet or plank flooring. They’re super-easy to clean and maintain.

14 • APRIL 28, 2013

Furniture Have you considered slipcovers? There are so many options out there. I’m not talking your grandma’s slipcovers. There are modern and sleek looks, with geometric prints. You can throw them in the wash. If that’s not the route you want to go, then opt for stain-resistant upholstery.

Leather and faux leather can work well. If the choice is yours, look for Crypton, a synthetic fabric used in commercial spaces. I’ve used this in beach houses and doctors’ offices. There are great looks out there, and Rover will be happy that you’re not yelling at him to get off the couch all the time. Paint Although I am a huge fan of flat paint for its sophisticated finish, if you have a large dog who’s always running into walls, you may want to consider semi-gloss. Yes, it will have a little sheen, but it will be much easier to wipe down and you won’t feel a need to repaint in a few months. Finally, it’s important for dogs to have their own sanctuary. A quiet corner with their doggie bed and toys will let them know they certainly are part of the family. Recently we broke down and got my daughter a puppy. Eight-month-old Raffles is a poogle (poodle-beagle). And with me as his mom, you know he has his own little assortment of furniture, including a leopard chaise lounge that he absolutely loves!

Raffles’s pal Mika, who’s always dressed up, has lots of doggie beds as well. If you want your dog to have his own special place outside, there are options beyond the typical doghouse. Architect Geoffrey Lewis designed this masterpiece as an auction item for Hanahauoli School. It has metal roofing with a vent, and you can pick it up and hose it down for easy maintenance. The frame is made of Douglas fir, the sides are reclaimed fir and the roofing is corrugated metal. Geoff designed it with the pet in mind. He wanted to give him a different perspective. So this doghouse has cool architectural details including a window — another view from which to keep an eye on the house. There’s even a sign inside that reads, “Man is a dog’s best friend.” It ended up auctioning off for $1,700 — that’s no dog kibble. So I’ve given you little ideas and big ideas on how to make your best friend feel right at home. If you’re not quite ready to go there, don’t forget their favorite spot of all — right in your own bed with you!

Get into granite or most people, remodeling a kitchen includes a complete change of cabinets and countertops, maybe even appliances. If your cabinets are still in good condition but you want to improve your kitchen in some way, replacing your old countertop with one made of granite is a good investment and will definitely change the atmosphere in your space. Granite has a high threshold for hot and cold temperatures. For example, you can

safely place hot metal pans from your oven directly on the granite top without the need for a hot pad, although you should be wary of placing hot glass or ceramic dishes on it as they may crack if the countertop is too cold. This is called thermal shock and happens because of the difference in temperature. As for cold items, you do not need to worry about condensation that may make your granite countertop have a dark spot if

F

it is not properly sealed. Any condensation that may form on the stone will fade away within the hour. Granite countertops may be used as a cutting board too. Because the hardness of granite is greater than steel, you do not need to worry about kitchen knives scratching your granite surface. Still, it isn’t recommended to cut on your granite countertop as it could actually make your knife dull over time. Another way to add to your kitchen or other rooms is to create a stand-alone island with cabinets at its base. The island is

HI-POWER SOLAR APRIL 28 • 2013 17

Good day, sunshine oing solar makes great financial sense. The math is simple: you can save money every month with a solar system. Even if you finance your system, your lower monthly bill will help offset the loan payment and your total monthly expenditure for the loan and your power bill may be less than before.Your savings start immediately and your system will eventually pay for itself. The savings on your electric usage provides a healthy return on the cost invested. A lower electric bill and a system that pays for itself are just two reasons why solar is a smart investment. Here are even more benefits:

G

Solar gives you protection against electricity rate hikes Imagine that you had been able to lock in your automobile gas prices in 2004. You’d be paying less than $2 a gallon not only today, but also for decades to come. Whenever gas prices increase, you’d be saving even more money. That is exactly what you’re doing with the cost of electricity when you install a solar electric system. Because your solar installation is a fixed cost, savings increase as utility rates rise. Essentially, you’re building in a hedge against future rate increases. Rising utility rates are something you can count on, considering that they’ve gone up an average of 5 percent per year for the past 30 years. In 2006, some states saw the highest tier residential rates jump as much as 55 percent in one year. Solar comes with big financial incentives Federal and state tax credits and public utility rebates can reimburse you for a substantial portion of the cost of your solar system and installation. Your Hi-Power Solar consultant can explain what savings are available to make your system even more affordable.

imize those effects and lower your carbon footprint. Until recently, there hasn’t been much of a choice but to use the electricity provided by conventional methods. With advances in technology and increased consumer awareness, however, solar electricity is now a very feasible option. Coal-fired power plants are responsible for 72 percent of all sulfur dioxide emissions in the nation. Solar electricity produces no pollution. One million homes using solar electricity would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4.3 million tons per year, the equivalent of removing 850,000 cars from the road. By using more solar electricity, fewer power plants that produce green-

house gases would need to be built.

Solar is clean energy A solar electric plant generates no harmful emissions. You can power your home with 100 percent pure sunshine that is both clean, renewable and abundant — so much so that it’s been calculated that a 100-square mile array of solar modules in the Southwestern United States could generate enough electricity to power the entire country.

Solar offers you energy independence By switching to solar electricity, we can help alleviate our overdependence on foreign sources. Solar electricity is used where it is made, so there are no transportation or delivery costs.

GRANICRETE HAWAII

Concrete with more personality than you ever thought possible S ummer is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start enjoying backyard barbecues, pool parties and dining and lounging on the patio. It’s also time to tackle the home improvement projects on your list and create spaces that are inviting and infused with personality. Start from the ground up by resurfacing your drab concrete flooring. Say goodbye to stained, mildewed concrete and hello to a new designer finish. Here are some ideas for adding concrete appeal to your home’s exterior:

Make a grand entry Welcome guests with a beautifully resurfaced front walkway. Add color with a concrete stain. Want to add a new texture and design? Concrete overlays provide a fresh canvas to personalize your entry. Try a classic look with brick borders or create curb appeal with an eye-catching ashlar slate pattern.

Design a luxurious lanai Transform your lanai into an inviting living space that flows effortlessly from the indoors to the outdoors. Continue the same decor from your living room onto your lanai with a complimentary tile or natural stone pattern. Opt for a smoother texture that feels comfortable when you and your guests are barefoot. Deck out your pool A flagstone pattern lends a tropical feel. Try a tile look for a Mediterranean style. Overlays can also be finished without a pattern for a clean, modern look. Choose a stone-like texture to provide slip-resistance. Granicrete Hawaii invites you to discover how decorative concrete flooring can increase the value and visual appeal of your home. To get an idea of the possibilities with overlays and stains, take a look at the gallery of work on Granicrete Hawaii’s website. Visit the company’s showroom

Add some economical living space with an outdoor room A dding living space to your home can be an expensive prospect. However, creating an outdoor room is a budget-friendly option that gives you more square footage, as well as additional opportunities to enjoy the season. As an extension of the home, outdoor rooms with decks or pergolas can be personalized to truly bring indoor comforts outside for relaxation and entertaining. Stand up to Mother Nature If you start with cellular PVC as a wood replacement, you can add longevity and low-maintenance to pergolas and other outdoor structures. Those that come in easy-to-assemble kits make it even easier to have a stylish extension to your home. According to the experts at Walpole Outdoors, which has been crafting outdoor furnishings since 1933, to match your home’s style, look for variations in pergola design such as straight or arched tops, and round or square columns in many sizes. “For a true ‘outdoor room’ feeling, a retractable, weather-resistant fabric canopy can provide shade and shelter,” said

Walpole president Lou Maglio. Affordable, natural looks that endure Decks are another easy way to extend living space and with new alternative materials, it’s easy to save on maintenance without sacrificing style. One advancement in

composite decking technology features a “cap” or protective outer layer that looks like real hardwood. “Today’s deck trends show that homeowners are looking for deck styles and colors that strongly resemble the earthy tones found in nature,” says Carey Walley, vice

president of marketing for TimberTech, a leading composite decking manufacturer. As an example, the company’s new Earthwood Evolutions Terrain is an affordable hardwood-look composite that is durable, moisture-resistant and accepts concealed fasteners. Walley also notes that a new interactive Q&A forum called Straight Talk is a great place to investigate common deck topics and to ask any deck question that will be answered by experts.

With these tips, it’s easy to find functional, beautiful and affordable options for making your outdoor space your very own. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

AMERICAN ELECTRIC

Taking the ‘SAFE’ route with trusted PV installer I nstalling photovoltaic (PV) panels is a great investment, reducing your electricity bill while adding value to your home. However, these savings mean little if yours is one of the nearly 45,000 homes damaged in electrical fires every year, or your loved ones are among the 2,000 people who are the victims of such fires annually. PV should not be considered by itself, but should be par t of a comprehensive look at your home’s entire electrical system. Unless the basic wiring is safe and sound, it doesn’t make sense to add more stress to a potentially defective system. Yet, this is exactly what many homeowners unwittingly do every day. The wiring in many of Hawaii’s homes was not designed to accommodate the various electrical loads that we place on it today. Additionally, like a car or any appliance, electrical systems break down with age, and the only way to tell if your home is safe and working properly is to have a comprehensive inspection accomplished by a qualified, licensed electrical specialist, equipped with the right test gear. How can you tell if your home is at risk? If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, it could be a sign of potential electric problems: 24 • APRIL 28, 2013

• Is your home 15 years or older? • Have there been additions, renovations or large appliances added to the home? • Are extension cords and multiple power strips in permanent use around the house? • Do lights flicker or dim momentarily? • Do circuit breakers or fuses trip frequently? • Do you hear crackling, sizzling or buzzing from outlets? • Are outlet and light switch face plates hot to the touch or discolored? American Electric, serving kama‘aina industry and residential customers, is Hawaii’s exclusive provider of an Electrical Hazard Detection program called CurrentSAFE®. This service utilizes sophisticated ultrasonic and infrared equipment to inspect wiring, outlets, fixtures, appliances and circuit breakers. CurrentSAFE’s highly trained technicians look behind walls to detect electrical hazards before they become a tragedy. Once the dangers are identified, American Electric’s team of professionals can perform the necessary repairs or upgrades to keep you and your family safe. The CurrentSAFE inspection is included at no additional cost

when you choose American Electric as your trusted PV installer throughout the month of May. For nearly 70 years, American Electric has been providing kamaaina with solutions to their electrical and alternative energy needs. This expertise has enabled American Electric to become the largest locally owned electrical contractor, and now one of the largest PV specialists, in the state. A solar/PV system is a small power plant on your roof, so doesn’t it makes sense to buy your system from the experts that our utility companies trust to build their power plants? “American Electric offers a unique value: confirming the safety of your existing electrical system, providing a professionally installed PV system and standing behind its warranties for decades to come,” said Christian Adams, general manager of the Alternative Energy Division at American Electric. To schedule a free consultation and find out why people are choosing American Electric, call 440-5098 or visit AmericanElectricHomes.com. American Electric has been providing superior service and peace of mind for kamaaina since 1946.
