Let’s get your garden rolling

aster, to me, has always been associated with new life — and it’s not limited to religious connotations. You’ve no doubt noticed the influx of baby chicks, bunnies and ducklings adorning display windows, school projects and even monthly calendars. Maybe it’s just the spirit of the season, but it makes me want to breathe new life into my container garden as well. One of the key points I’ve learned in my lanai gardening is to pay attention to a plant’s sun and shade needs. This includes moving the plants, if necessary, to keep them from getting too much or too little sun. Why not make the job easier and put your planter on wheels? An easy way to achieve this is to

purchase a plant stand on wheels. You can find these at your local hardware or gardening store. They come in both square and circular shapes as well as in wooden and plastic materials. Make it your own by spray-painting to match your home’s color scheme. Then, you can set your containers on top. Another option is to place your containers onto a rolling cart or table. If you have the space, an antique wagon can do the trick while adding character to your garden. If you’re starting fresh, you can purchase plant containers with wheels already installed. I did some shopping myself, and rolling planters were somewhat difficult to find locally, but are abundant online. The good news is, though, you can easily turn your existing containers into rollers with items that are readily available. Take your existing (empty) container, flip it over, and make sure it has drainage holes. If not, drill some into the bottom, about 1/2-inch in diameter and at least 1-inch apart. Keep in mind where you’ll place your casters (small, freely swiveling wheels) and avoid those areas. Then, take locking casters, which you can purchase at the local hardware store, and place them on the

bottom of the container. Make sure you use enough casters to evenly distribute the weight of the container. The number of casters will vary depending on the shape and size of your container. For most averagesized containers, four casters should do the trick. Mark the caster holes, remove the casters, then drill the marks using a 1/8-inch drill bit. Next, line the casters back up and bolt them into place. Turn the container over and roll it around to make sure it works properly. Then, seal around the bolt holes with caulk to avoid leaks. Now, it’s ready for planting.

Alternate Energy Inc.

Then and now: Alternate Energy celebrates 20 years of reliable solar service in Hawaii

n Hawaii, when we’re seeking wisdom in order to make an important decision, we turn to our kupuna. Meet Eddie and Grace Misaki. Eddie, 85, is a retired Pearl City Elementary School counselor. Grace is a retired Campbell High School secretary. Eddie enjoys golfing twice a week and works out at the Waipahu YMCA; Grace is active at Pearl City Community Church, singing in the choir and volunteering. They have lived in their Pearl City home on Nanakai Place since 1960. Over the last few decades, they’ve seen a lot of changes in Honolulu. But according to them, one thing has stayed the same: great solar service from Alternate Energy Inc. (AEI). Eddie first met Alternate Energy owner Bruce Ekimura in 1998, just five years after the company was founded. The Misakis had been watching their electric bill go up each month and, knowing that water heating accounts for an average of 40

I

percent of a family’s electric bill, they decided to make the switch to a solar hot water heater. Eddie called a few companies and decided to go with Alternate Energy because, he said, “When I talked to Bruce, I just trusted him right away.” This was back in the day before solar PV was widely available. Originally a plumber, Bruce got his start in the ’70s working side by side with his father. Gradually, he noticed customers’ growing interest in solar water heating. Bruce became an early specialist in the installation of solar hot water heaters, and in 1993, Alternate Energy was officially incorporated. For 15 years now, that original solar hot water heater that the Misakis installed with AEI has been tapping the sun’s energy to deliver piping hot water to the family home, with not a single disruption or problem. But last year, as electric rates kept creeping up, the retired couple decided to take the PV plunge as well. Of course they called Alternate Energy. Today they are proud owners of a new solar PV system, and Grace waits for the newly shrunken HECO bill with glee. “When you have that trust in someone, you don’t need to worry. There’s no need to go anywhere else,” said Eddie. “I knew AEI would give us a good price and the best quality panels. And their service was terrific, from our sales rep Craig Kawamura, to the electricians to the installers. Everyone was so nice and professional.” With the money they’re saving (about $175 per month), the Misakis can set aside

a little extra for the simple pleasures in life. “We got to travel to Florida and Vegas,” Eddie said. “That’s what you want to be spending your money on in retirement. Not the electric bill!” Meanwhile, the team at Alternate Energy continues to help Hawaii families like the Misakis with the finest solar hot water heating and PV products, installation and service. Growing slowly but surely while quietly achieving the industry’s highest recognitions and certifications over the years, the company is proud to be one of Hawaii’s oldest residential and commercial solar energy companies. It has been a Hawaii Energy conservation and efficiency programapproved independent solar water heating contractor since the program’s inception. AEI is a full-service, fully licensed solar company with the comprehensive suite of Solar Power Systems Contractor (C60), Solar Energy Systems Contractor (C-61) and Electrical Contractor (C-13) licenses — and licensed journeyman plumbers and electricians are all employed by AEI (not subcontractors). They have been recognized as the No. 1 residential solar PV installer in Hawaii, and designated as a Mitsubishi Elite Dealer and Mitsubishi Electric Certified Installer, the only PV company outside of Japan with this high honor. “We’ve been committed to customer needs from the beginning,” said Ekimura. “It’s the foundation of our business and the reason we come to work every day. We thank our customers, vendors and staff for 20 years of support in helping Hawaii families move toward greater energy sustainability.” Not to mention better use of their hard-earned money.

GOLDEN CABINETS & STONE

MARCH 31 • 2013

Even more choices in countertops, tiles BY KYLE GALDEIRA ust in time for those pending home improvement projects, customers will be pleased to learn that Golden Cabinets & Stone is adding 10 new countertop varieties to its extensive inventory. Owner Wayne Cao explained that within the month, five new quartz and granite countertop styles will be available for those looking to build a kitchen or bathroom, or simply spruce up an existing area. Reservations for brand-new countertops are available now to aid in the planning and design process. The company is also offering a huge sale during which customers can take advantage of savings ranging from 40 to 50 percent off the entire stock of cabinetry and countertops. Golden Cabinets & Stone also offers multiple elements of customization, including 30- and 40-inch wall cabinets as well as the option of including glass panels as an added artistic element. Special orders are welcomed, and if customers provide the measurements for their desired cabinetry, Golden Cabinets & Stone can create a 3D

Cao also encouraged customers to stop in and check out Golden Cabinets & Stone’s new selection of porcelain tiles. Multiple varieties of the tile are available, and the covering resembles travertine — a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs. “The porcelain tile really provides the look of natural stone, modeling travertine,” Cao said. Golden Cabinets & Stone has gained a reputation for offering quality, affordable cabinetry and countertops to meet the needs of Hawaii’s consumers for more than five years. Cao noticed how expensive it had become to purchase the products in Hawaii and sought to bring more affordable options to residents looking to either build

from scratch or remodel existing spaces. Cao noted that Golden Cabinets & Stone is fully stocked with inventory, and “a wide range of choices” are available for customers shopping for everything from cabinetry to hardware — including handles for an attractive yet functional touch. “When we transform a client’s outdated kitchen into a new, more functional space, it is most satisfying seeing their face and hearing how much their whole family enjoys this new element in their home,” Cao said. With a 3,000-square-foot showroom at its Kalihi-Palama store located at 1299 Kaumualii St., Golden Cabinets & Stone

offers a multitude of cabinetry in addition to 50 varieties of granite and quartz countertops, 30 choices of sinks and an array of high-quality porcelain floor tile varieties — the perfect combination when renovating a bathroom or kitchen. The cabinetry selections are constructed from solid wood doors and plywood boxes, and provide customers with unsurpassed quality not available from competitors that offer particle or pressboard styles. The company is continually introducing new products, which are in stock to aid home or business owners with completing projects as fast as possible.

Staging on a shoestring Here’s a bit of advice from the pros that is easy to implement for a quick home sale he real estate market is starting to show signs of improvement, which is welcome news for people wanting to sell their homes. This positive momentum alone isn’t enough to close a deal, though — a homeowner must make their properties appealing to potential buyers so they stand out from the competition. The good news is it’s easy to create an appealing atmosphere with a few staging tips and tricks from the experts. “When people ask what is most important about home staging, I say, ‘delete, delete, delete and clean, clean, clean’, said Cathy Mansour, an interior designer and director at Aqua Hospitality Carpets. “You can’t be too tidy or too well-scrubbed. Start by eliminating all clutter. Not only does it make your home look unorganized, clutter also makes it look much smaller. Pack away papers, knickknacks, excessive photography or decor and extra furniture. Uncluttered rooms highlight the space and personality of a home so buyers take notice of these attributes rather than the cluster of family photos or stack of magazines on the coffee table. Once clutter is gone, it’s time to assess the flooring. More buyers desire carpet because it is comfortable, reduces noise and improves indoor air quality. Sellers should highlight this feature. “Carpet is warm and inviting in a family room, said Karen Dembsky, owner of

T

Peachtree Home Staging. “Area rugs over hard surface floors make the room look smaller. While clean, fresh carpeting is an asset when it comes to selling a home, any floorcovering can be a drawback if it is dirty, dated or has an odor. Have carpets professionally cleaned before opening your doors for showings. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) recommended hiring only reputable carpet-cleaning professionals who will use effective cleaning solutions Contract License: #BC-27653 & #BC-14660

and equipment to do the best job possible. Ask about training and certifications, and whether a cleaner will come to your home for an inspection first to determine what type of cleaning or repair is required, including any stain treatments. Visit www.carpet-rug.org to find cleaning professionals who use CRI-certified carpet cleaning products as part of their cleaning process. If repairs can’t be made, the carpet will need to be replaced. Dembsky stressed Work In Progress

carpet is one of the most cost-efficient upgrades you can do when staging your home for sale. “Replacing carpet — you can always get your money back, she said. “Just don’t put it in the bathroom — buyers don’t like that. Once your home is clean and clutterfree, it’s time to let in the light. Dark houses look drab no matter how stylish or clean they are. Pull back drapery, turn on the hallway sconces and update wattages on dim bulbs. About 100 watts per 50 square feet is a good target. If you have outdated lighting hardware or lampshades, consider affordable replacements — it’s typically an easy update that transforms a room instantly. Once you let in all that wonderful light, some walls may look dated. A fresh coat of paint can liven up a room and make it look modern and clean. Focus on rooms where walls are dirty, damaged or feature a dated color to give your interior design a facelift. What paint colors are best for attracting buyers? Stick to neutrals like warm honey or soft green so potential buyers can easily envision their own furniture and decor in the space. If you have a smaller home, consider painting adjacent rooms or spaces the same color. For example, a small dining room and a small kitchen painted in the same color tricks the eye so the space appears larger than it actually is. Finally, remember sight isn’t the only sense you want to stimulate when it comes to selling a home. How your house smells can make it appealing or distasteful to potential buyers. Before you know it, you’ll be reviewing bids and moving forward on the sale of your home.

BIA-HAWAII MARCH 31 • 2013 7

What do home buyers want to see in their next home? BY KAREN NAKAMURA ew Homes Month in April is a great time to think about what you want in your next new home. We’ve all seen a stunning hillside mansion and dreamed of what it would be like to raise our families there. Or, we’ve envied the amazing renovation makeovers depicted on television shows that give the homeowners a sense of pride and accomplishment. But how does your dream home compare to what home buyers across the country are looking for in their new home? A recent study from the National Association of Homes Builders, What Home Buyers Really Want, shared the results of a survey of the preferences of thousands of home buyers. On average, home buyers are looking for a home that is 17 percent larger than their current home, a median of 2,226 square feet. But, likely as a result of the ongoing challenges of the economic downturn, that size is 13 percent smaller than the average size of homes started in 2012. The layout of the home is more important than the location to most buyers. Living space and the number of rooms

N

were ranked the most influential characteristics by 65 percent of buyers, while only 33 percent ranked proximity to locations they need to go as a top priority. A sense of open space continues to be popular, with about threequarters of home buyers wanting a kitchen that is open to the family room, and nearly two-thirds looking for ceilings on the first floor that are 9 feet or higher. Some of the most desired features in a home involve saving energy. Energy Star-rated appliances were rated as essential or desirable by 94 percent of respondents, and 91 percent wanted an Energy Star rating for the whole home. In fact, nine out of 10 buyers would rather buy a home with energy-efficient features and permanently lower utility bills than one without those features that costs 2 percent to 3 percent less. Convenient organization and storage is another home buyer favorite. More than 80 percent of the respondents said they wanted walk-in pantries and pull-out shelves in the kitchen, a laundry room and storage in the garage. The latest technology is also important. While only 15 percent of homeowners currently have a wireless home security system, 50 percent want one. Similar gaps in “have” versus

“want” occur with security cameras, lighting control, wireless audio systems and multi-zone HVACs (heating, ventilation and air conditioning). The most unwanted home features include elevators, a location in a golf course, high density or gated community and having only a shower stall and no tub in the master bath. So whether you’re planning or dreaming about what your next new home will look like, or you’re making renovations to your current home so that it will appeal to its next owner,, keep these home buyer preferences in mind. Contact info@biahawaii.org to learn about the latest features available in new homes in Hawaii.

DIAMOND HEAD WINDOWS & DOORS

How to grow your home’s value n late January 2012, the National Association of Home Builders Remodeling Market Index hit its highest level in five years. David Crowe, chief economist of the association, stated: “For many consumers, fixing up their house now fits their sentiments — and their finances — far better than selling or buying. I have found the consensus among remodelers is homeowners feel they won’t be moving anytime soon. Clients are opting instead to do something they themselves will enjoy or benefit from.” Recent studies also show that installing replacement windows like Amerimax has a 120 percent return on investment. Remember, your home is an appreciating asset, one that grows in value over time, unlike purchasing a car or computer that depreciates over time. Invest in something that increases in value. Take advantage of tax rebates for home improvement projects W hen U.S. lawmakers made a deal to keep the country from going off the “fiscal cliff ” at the end of 2012, they reinstated a tax break of up to $500 to help homeowners earn money back for energy-efficient home improvements. The tax credit included in the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 is the first home improvement incentive since 2011, making this remodeling season an opportune time to upgrade your home before time runs out on Dec. 31, 2013. While many of the products eligible for the new tax credit are the unsung heroes of home energy savings — heaters, water pumps, air conditioners — energy efficient replacement windows and doors are included, helping to save energy while also infusing new life into a dull home exterior. Many window and door manufacturers are

geared up with qualifying products that can fulfill any homeowner’s unique style needs. Since 2006, there have been a number of versions of the energy efficient tax credit for homeowners. The current extension covers all purchases made in 2013 and retroactively gives credit for 2012 purchases. The credit is 10 percent of the cost of building materials and select energy efficient heating and cooling devices, insulation and roofing for primary residence, up to $500. Installation fees do not apply. Some categories like windows are capped at $200, but can be combined with other purchases to make up the full amount. For example, if you buy qualifying windows for $2,000, roofing for $2,000 and a water heater for $1,000, you will receive the entire $500 credit. However, there are a few rules. The total

amount of savings allowed per household is cumulative since the program began in 2006. So, if you’ve already received $500 or more in total credits since 2006, you are not eligible to earn more credit. But, if you’ve received less than $500, you can still add new credits, up to the full amount. Windows and doors that are eligible for the tax credit must be ENERGY STAR qualified in the region where they are being installed. Look to products like the Ply Gem Windows Mira Premium Series, which can be configured to meet ENERGY STAR requirements in every U.S. climate zone and are available in 38 colors, with multiple shapes and grille patterns. According to ENERGY STAR’s website, all of the windows, doors and skylights in your home do not need to be replaced to qualify. The tax credit will be given, dollar-for-

dollar, in the following year’s tax returns, so be sure to keep your receipts. Visit www.plygemwindows.com to learn more. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

SURFACE SHIELD ROOFING COMPANY

Refresh your roof with a new, protective coating D o you own a home covered by a flat or low-slope roof? Do you have an old Monier tile roof or metal roof? In this day and age, there are alternative options to a complete tear off and installation of a new roof. But what are they? How do you know if your roof is a candidate? A roof coating can be applied to just about any substrate. Surface Shield Roofing Company does, however,

have criteria regarding an acceptable condition of the existing substrate before a coating system is recommended. The first requisite is that your existing roofing material must be in decent condition and the roof still must be attached to the wood or concrete that it was originally adhered or attached to. Minor blistering or lifting of the material can be repaired and cracked tiles replaced, but there is a point of “no return.” This point comes when the roofing surface has too many blisters, seams coming apart in more areas than not, a membrane worn down to a paper-thin state or brittle tile not able to be walked on. These would all qualify as signs to the home or business owner that a complete removal and installation of new roofing material may be necessary. The installation of a coating system is a less expensive way to enhance the integrity of the SURFACE SHIELD substrate (roofing surface) on your flat or lowROOFING COMPANY pitch roof. Looking for Luck While you can certainly fill your home or business with objects to bring you good fortune, the real keys to creating better chances are based on personal outlook and opportunities

with

Alice Inoue

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I saw a store promoting a feng shui fish figurine for “money luck.” How does a figurine bring luck? It seems bogus to me. What are your viewpoints of lucky objects, lucky people, and people who live lucky lives? I sure can use some luck in my life right now and would feel stupid buying the fish, especially if it didn’t work.

’m sure most of us feel that we can use some extra luck in our lives, too! Life these days is challenging in myriad and new ways and doing something to bring some good luck our way probably seems more attractive than ever — but buying a fish?

I

Feng shui symbolism Let me explain. Feng shui is heavy on symbolism and what objects “represent.” You can find lists of objects that can be placed in the home to attract whatever you want more of — everything from fish figurines for money to elephants for fertility to deities and altars for protection. The million-dollar question is, do they work? Most often when I ask the owner to tell me about the lucky items in his or her home or office, I hear something along the lines of, “This is what the store sold me,” or “I read that having these items are good luck.” The items obviously are not working because the client wants to know what else he or she can do. Is it about purchasing another lucky object or is there more to it?

The bigger picture I use feng shui symbolism to create an intention in the environment. Placing something in your environment that has meaning to you will symbolically and energetically support you whenever you see it, but the item itself has no magic ability to change your “luck.” The other day a woman said to me, “You’ll love this! I put a money toad in my wealth corner and I received a large check in the mail

the next day. Feng shui actually works!” I cringe when I hear stories like this. Feng shui has nothing to do with luck or getting something for nothing. The toad may have subconsciously helped her to focus on what she wanted, but it was she who created the opportunity for the check to arrive. Feng shui is not about purchasing something to place in your home so that the item itself can bring you what you want. That is a fantasy that many people unfortunately buy into and what you sensed as “bogus.” If you want to manifest anything, you must hold the intention and vision of what you want and recognize opportunities to create it when they arise. Symbols mean-

ingful to you will help to support you in that endeavor. Is there such a thing as luck? I feel we create our own “luck” and that every event in our lives has two sides to it — the “lucky” and “unlucky” sides — based on our perception, or thoughts. Winning the lottery may seem lucky, but most people who hit the jackpot can give you a list of the challenges that came along with winning all that money, the “unlucky” side. When something happens that we perceive as being challenging, the positive side is that it is helping us find a better path, grow in ways we never would have otherwise, or see a situation differently. What about people who seem luckier than most? In the same way, I do not think of one person being luckier than another. The lucky person is one who looks toward the positive, sees more opportunities, and acts on them. The person who thinks he or she is unlucky is stuck in a pattern of thinking that promotes or engenders “unluckiness” and missed opportunities. Researcher Richard Wiseman (The Skeptical Inquirer, 27, 1-5) showed this pat-

tern in an experiment. He had volunteers read through a newspaper and count the photos in it. Those who thought they were lucky took a few seconds to complete it, while those who saw themselves as unlucky took an average of two minutes. Why is that? Because on the second page of the newspaper, a large message read: “Stop counting, there are 43 photos in this newspaper.” The answer was clearly marked, but the unlucky people were far more likely to miss it, while the lucky people tended to see it. As an added bonus, half way through the newspaper was another message that read, “Stop counting, tell the experimenter you have seen this and win $250.” The people who claimed to be unlucky in life, looked right past this message, never seeing what was clearly in front of them, losing time and money. This experiment shows that the same possibility for money and success is latent in everyone’s environment, but some people pick up on it and others do not. What you see or do not see may be based on how you see yourself. No one in that room had “more chances” than anyone else. We create our chances or “luck” based on our outlook.

Using symbolism Use symbolism in your environment to help you “see” and create more opportunities in your life. The stronger your connection with what the objects represent, the more positive and useful they become for you, but never confuse “objects” with the power of your own intention. Your reality is a creation of your thoughts and intentions.

Consider these remodeling ideas for the love of spring I mproved value, curb appeal and livability are the benchmarks for any smart home improvement. But some upgrades you do for the sheer joy of it. The best home improvements deliver all those smart qualities and speak to your heart at the same time. With spring home improvement season in motion, here are four upgrades that you can do for the love of spring — and the love of your biggest investment:

Add/replace a skylight Abundant natural light and fresh air are among the joys of spring, and replacing an old, energy-inefficient skylight, or adding one where none existed before, is a great way to welcome sunlight and spring breezes into your home. Sunlight’s positive effect on mood is well-documented, and adding a fresh-air skylight, which comes with a screen, offers other health benefits as well. Opt for an energy saving solar powered fresh-air skylight and you can enjoy the benefits of passive ventilation to reduce humidity and stale air in your home along with more natural light.

From a practical standpoint, installing an Energy Star-qualified skylight like those made by VELUX America can help you control heating, cooling and lighting costs in your home. Replacing an older, less efficient skylight with a new solarpowered, fresh-air skylight that has a rain sensor, can also ensure your home stays protected from spring showers. You can also choose solar powered blinds for even more energy efficiency, and both are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. To learn more about energy-efficient skylights, visit www.veluxusa.com or energystar.gov.

Add/improve a deck The trend toward outdoor living spaces continues, with decks being one of the most sought-after amenities among home buyers. In fact, adding a wooden deck can recoup more than 77 percent of the deck’s cost when you sell your home, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report. If you don’t already have a deck, adding one — whether wood or composite — not only enhances your home value,

in a bathroom, don’t overlook the biggest surface in the room — the floor. Many modern builders install vinyl floors in bathrooms because they are durable and cheap. Switching out this common material for stone or ceramic tile is a great way to brighten the room and give your bath a whole new look.

it will be a great place to enjoy outdoor living. If you already have a deck, consider value-enhancing upgrades like new balusters, lighted post caps, built-in seating and even planters. Upgrade bathroom floors Bathroom renovations are also popular and a minor bathroom remodel can return more than 65 percent of the cost at the time of resale, according to the Cost vs. Value Report. While replacing countertops and fixtures are common remodeling tasks

Improve your entryway Your front door and entryway are the first impression visitors have of your home’s decor. A welcoming entry invites guests in and gives you a mood boost every time you walk through it. This year, celebrate spring by replacing an old worn wooden door with a sturdy, decorative steel door — an improvement that recoups nearly 85 percent of its cost when you sell, according to Remodeling Magazine. To really celebrate spring, add a screen door. You’ll be able to let in fresh air and spring breezes while keeping insects out. Plus, a screen door is essential Americana, creating a welcoming openness that epitomizes the joy of spring.

pring brings a bright, colorful feel to the world, and you can easily incorporate that sentiment into your kitchen by adding a backsplash. A project easily within the capabilities of most do-it-yourselfers, backsplashes are both functional and decorative. Granite, ceramic or glass tile protects the wall behind the range or cook top from splatters of food or grease while brightening valuable workspace and serving as a visual focal point for the room. Great kitchens sell homes, and the room is one of the most-used in any home. Upgrading your kitchen is almost always a good investment, one that improves resale value and your enjoyment of home. reen is the new black. Pantone named emerald green as its 2013 color of the year, and SherwinWilliams touts aloe as its color of the year. Whether it’s bold, striking emerald or fresh, misty aloe, green in all shades is the color of the moment in interiors. Today you can’t go anywhere without seeing green — literally. Green is absolutely everywhere. So let’s explore this beautiful color and how it can work in your space. The color green symbolizes nature. It’s considered the most restful color, combining the cheerfulness of yellow and the freshness of blue. It can represent anything from tranquility to prosperity and of course, even jealousy. When it comes to decorating, it’s often used to calm and center and can be used in just about any room. But as Pantone is predicting, green can be used to invigorate as well. When I was recently at Las Vegas Market, green was featured in lots of showrooms and vignettes. A look that I really love is layers of green with white and natural wood. From vibrant watercress to bright green apple, layering your greens with the freshness and contrast of white creates a space that is current and refreshing. Natural wood introduces and reinforces the healing element in a room, and also makes it feel very up to date. In a space like this I would limit blacks and harsh tones, and opt for accents of white, glass and natural wood. Another style I love is the opposite of what I just mentioned — intense greens paired with whites and blacks and pops of a secondary accent color like yellow. This is a really fresh look that also feels strong and modern. Lighter greens can be used as neutral colors. A watered-down, muted green could easily take the place of a beige. If this is what you’re going for, you can use it on all four walls and it would not only not be

too strong, it would be more understated than throwing color on one accent wall. For a peaceful, relaxing setting in either a home or office, you could incorporate your brown pieces of furniture with white trim and some deeper layers of green. I love using blazing apple green as an accent color because it’s fun and lively. It evokes a lot of energy and can make a kitchen instantly fresh. Be sure to have some green apples around to tie in with this color!

Finally, in decorating, you can also go green with mosses, succulents, other live plants or fresh flowers in vases. I always love displaying a single cut leaf in a vase with water to add a breath of life and color to any table. The side benefit? The leaves I’ve done this with usually end up sprouting roots and becoming a lasting pop of freshness. Now that’s really going green!" The busy person’s guide for entertaining on short notice I deally, you’ll have a few days notice to get everything in order when you’re hosting guests. But everyone knows that’s not always the case. Dropins happen and you can make a choice between panicking or embracing the spontaneity of a last-minute get-together with your friends and family. The key to being an unflappable host is having a simple process to get your home guest-ready in a hurry. Enlist a full-time housekeeper. Maybe you don’t have the means to put someone in charge of keeping your house clean, but you can put gadgets on the job fulltime. Rather than spending time to clean floors yourself, let a robot do the work for you. The iRobot Mint, which features both a sweep and mop mode, can effectively handle the job of cleaning your hard floor surfaces all by itself. It automatically cleans along walls, around furniture and into corners, while avoiding stairs and carpet, so there’s no need to supervise while it does its job. Last-minute hosting doesn’t have to be stress-inducing, especially since your guests won’t be looking for the royal treatment if they’re coming over on short notice. DA WING TRADING LLC

Mapping tips for good measure n important part of any kitchen or bath remodel is taking measurements and drawing a visual map. Measuring the existing cabinets will give you sizes for replacement cabinets.

A

Walls The first step is to measure the walls of where the new cabinets will be placed. The best way to measure a wall is from one corner to the opposite end. It is always helpful to have someone else hold one end of the measuring tape when measuring large areas. Next, measure the ceiling height, starting from the floor. Measuring the ceiling height will determine the general height of the wall cabinets for proper counter space. When taking measurements, sometimes there are spaces that will make taking accurate measurements difficult. In these situations, it is better to round down to the nearest inch rather than round up. Cabinets for a kitchen design with measurements rounded down will be sure to fit; the extra space can always be hidden with a filler piece. Whereas when rounded up, a whole cabinet may have to be changed to a smaller size to fit.

DA WING TRADING LLC contact // 847-3288 web // www.dawingtrading.com

With existing or replacing appliances, measure their placement from one end of the wall to one side of the existing appliance. If the plan is to relocate appliances to a different area, however, make a note of where.

Openings and obstacles It is important to jot down all openings or obstacles, such as windows, doorways or ceiling beams. Measure the placement of the obstacle from one end of the wall and the sizes (width and height) of the obstacle.

Appliances Plan on keeping the existing appliances? Take measurements of their sizes to ensure the cabinet design will allow space for them to fit. Similarly, when getting new appliances along with new cabinets, take note of the new sizes.

Sinks and plumbing fixtures Measuring from the center of the sink to one wall will give a reasonably accurate idea of the existing plumbing and what cabinet sizes may work. Also, take the measurements of the existing sink or new sink so the sink cabinet size will be able to fit the sink. Although plumbing can always be moved, using the existing setup is most cost effective.

ALTERNATIVE ELECTRIC MARCH 31 • 2013 19

In the house of the rising sun P hotovoltaics are creating quite a buzz among Hawaii homeowners. Also known as PV, photovoltaics are a form of solar energy. “But instead of heating your water, it actually produces electricity,” explained Chad Matsumoto, who co-owns Alternative Electric with Bronson Apana. Although the up-front costs may be high, there are many benefits that make PV a wise overall investment, and Matsumoto offers these examples.

State and federal solar energy income tax credits can reimburse up to 65 percent of the cost of a solar system. 3. Solar energy preserves the natural environment and improves air quality Hawaii’s electricity is mainly generated from fossil fuels. By producing electricity with a PV system, Hawaii can decrease oil demand and greenhouse gas emissions. 4. Investment purposes A PV system is one of the best investments a homeowner can make. After tax credits, the payback on a PV system is approximately six to eight years — maybe even sooner as the cost of electricity rises. After the system pays for itself, a homeowner can enjoy 17 to 19 years of virtually maintenance-free electric production. A PV system also increases the value of a home. It increases

Optimize small spaces in a big way he trend toward smaller, more efficient homes is still in full swing, with new home builders offering floor plans that lower square footage while amping up usability. If your home is older, however, or you live in an apartment, your smaller space may just feel ... well, small. Being short on space doesn’t mean you have to be short on style or efficiency. Here are a few ways you can optimize your small space:

T

Be size wise Nothing makes a small room look more cramped than filling it with furnishings that are too big for the space. For example, if your living room is 10 by 12 feet, a 9-foot-long sofa is going to dominate the room and leave little space for anything else. Conversely, placing a smaller bed (such as a twin or single) in a modestly sized bedroom is a classic trick designers and home stagers use to make a bedroom look larger. Furnishings should fit the space well, leaving plenty of area for you to move around them. Mohawk Homescapes blogger Cecilia Staniec advised homeowners to take room measurements. “You should never shop for furniture without a complete set of measurements,” she wrote. Open up floor space Smart use of wall space can open up floor space, which is often at a premium in small rooms. Some items must occupy floor space, such as sofas, tables and chairs. Others — like lighting, TVs and electronic components — don’t. Wall-mounting TVs, especially flat screens, can be a great

Let there be light A lack of lighting can make a small room look positively cramped. Whenever possible, enhance the size and appeal of your rooms with plenty of light. Natural light is optimum and adding a skylight or solar tube is a great way to bring sunshine into your home. If that kind of renovation isn’t in your budget, however, maximize natural light by keeping window treatments light and open. Recessed lighting overhead can help a room feel loftier, and wall sconces provide illumination without occupying valuable floor space. way to conserve floor space and create an appealing focal point for a petite room. Low-profile wall mounts, like Sanus’ Super Slim Full-motion VMF408, are perfect for small to medium screens of 26 to 47 inches. The mounts keep the screen close to the wall while providing a full range of motion for optimum viewing from multiple seating areas. Work with your walls Your walls can work for you in other ways, too. Even in small rooms, the walls are one of the largest design elements. Choosing a bright or light wall color can help a smaller room feel more open and airy. Adding mirrors is another way to make a room appear larger. You don’t need to install a full-length mirror on one wall; a series of smaller mirrors attractively positioned in a cluster can do the job just as well without being overwhelming.

With the right blend of furnishings, colors and accessories, it’s possible to live large in any small space. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

DEEP PURPLE PAINTING MARCH 31 • 2013 23

Rolling in the ‘Deep’ BY KYLE GALDEIRA hrough his 25-plus years as a professional painter, Jimmy Suh has stressed quality and integrity when it comes to assisting customers with a wide range of projects. In early 2010, Suh moved to Hawaii to be closer to family and friends, and brought his successful painting business with him to the Islands. The contractor spent nearly 20 years in San Francisco building his business and cultivating a sterling reputation for producing quality results. Whether the job involves painting a home’s exterior, or a few walls of a commercial space, Deep Purple Painting has it covered. “My main goal is to produce a quality job — that’s the most important thing,” said Suh, owner of Deep Purple Painting. Prior to each job, Suh meets with the owner to determine the necessary steps involved in refinishing the desired surfaces. The painter and his experienced crew consider many factors, including the relationships between colors and how they compliment one another, and present the owner with the viable options. Other aspects that Suh considers include the texture of certain surfaces, and what variety of

paint will coat them in a way that protects and beautifies for years to come. Suh has accumulated a host of positive referrals from satisfied customers — a direct result of his respect for his clients and their needs. When meeting with Suh, customers are encouraged to view completed jobs in person to fully understand the stellar workmanship that goes into every Deep Purple project. After the look and feel of the project is determined, the

client is presented with a written estimate detailing both the cost of the job as well as a timeline detailing the work to be performed. “The word-of-mouth referrals that I receive come from the extensive preparation and excellent results from numerous jobs, both residential and commercial,” said Suh of many notable projects in both Hawaii and San Francisco. “That’s why people like how I do business.”

Suh has honed his craft for over a quarter century, and can quickly diagnose problems with paint jobs that have resulted in unsightly chipping and peeling. Suh explained that the tedious tasks of priming and smoothing surfaces and filling in any cracks or imperfections with quality patching materials go a long way in ensuring a paint job’s effectiveness. He stressed quality and an honest approach to customer service throughout each project. “A painter needs to follow the proper procedures,” Suh said. “That’s why there are so many problems here in Hawaii with painting projects. You need to prime the area, and prepare it properly. It’s worth the price for a premium paint job that’s done right the first time, saving time and money in the long run.” For more information or to set up a consultation with Suh, call 739-2000.

BELLA PIETRA

See how mosaics can make a difference

BELLA PIETRA contact // 587-7779 address // 701 N. Nimitz Hwy. web // bellapietra.com

ccording to Bella Pietra showroom manager Jacob White, adding decorative mosaic tiles to your home is easier than you think. “Many people love the idea of using mosaic tile, but aren’t sure how or where to use them in their homes,” said White. “We show you how these tiles can be used to add color and texture to the decor of almost any room in the house.” The key to using mosaic tiles in your home is to choose the right size and color of tiles for the space that you are decorating. Think carefully about these two aspects of the tiles as well as what the overall purpose of the room is intended to be, and you’ll find that using mosaics is simple. At Bella Pietra, the staff encourages you take home swatches so you can visualize the tile in the actual space and see it with your lighting, cabinetry, etc. Kitchen and bathroom backsplashes are perfect places to consider using mosaic tiles. Your kitchen and bathroom counters are usually clean planes and often with a high polish. Mosaic tiles add elements of texture and color to offset the long lines of the countertop. Different choices in the color and size of the tiles can

A

really make a room look different. Instead of blending in, choose mosaic tile walls that are really set apar t from the rest of the cabinetry in the kitchen. If you want a kitchen that is modern and expressive, larger tiles that are set in a way that creates a textural pattern on the

wall could be one way to go. Instead of a standard 1 by 1 inch tile, go with a subway tile (2 by 4 inches) or something very linear, like 1 by 10 inches. Most of the tiles that there are to choose from are square or rectangular but those aren't the only choices that you have. Choose tiles that are of a different shape and you can create cool patterns and designs in your home without a lot of hard work on your part. When making this choice, always go small with the tiles because it creates a look that blends together well without attacking the senses. Mosaics are not only for the kitchen and bathroom. They can be used as a border around the floor’s edge of a room. Use an 18 by 18 inch tile as the field with a 2 by 2 inch on-mesh matching travertine mosaic as the border. This helps define the space. Mosaics are also used for entire walls. Rather than creating an accent wall with different color paint, use a stone mosaic veneer to clad the wall and anchor the space. Bella Pietra has mosaic glass, stone, pebbles and veneer. Come by the showroom to browse the selection and consult with the staff.
