JOANNE ROMERO

Good luck, home

’m Filipino, not Irish. Nevertheless, I’ve been celebrating St. Patrick’s Day my whole life. This year is no different. I’ll don my green shirt and miniature leprechaun hat, eat corned beef and cabbage, and maybe even have a green beer (or two). The luck of the Irish, as far as I’m concerned, isn’t reserved for those of Irish descent. My family has been making goodluck habits part of everyday life since before I was born. In the spirit of St. Paddy’s Day, here are five fortuitous practices for your home, from my family to yours.

I

1. Bless it. Whenever our relatives or close friends move into a new place, they always make sure to have it blessed first. When I moved into my apartment, I’ll admit, I didn’t do this right away. But eventually, my neighbors and I came together and we got several units blessed by a kahu. Better late than never.

4.De-clutter. This is easier said than done, especially because I come from a family of pack rats. Although we have a tendency to keep more than we should, none of us will ever block the front door. Doing so would be blocking good fortune, opportunities or even visitors from coming in.

2.Go green. Plants symbolize growth, and my mom has always kept them inside the home for good luck. Bamboo, in particular, is renown for being lucky and easy to care for.

5.Mind the bed. Make your bed every morning to set the tone for the day. Also, make sure there are no mirrors facing the bed and avoid placing it in the direct path of the doorway.

3.Keep bags off the floor. This is especially true for a purses, which contain money. (Another superstition: Keep money in all your purses and wallets at all times.) Putting them on the floor means you don’t value what’s inside, so add some tables or hooks to your home to make keeping them elevated effortless.

The Irish may have their natural luck, but some of us might have to try a little. These practices are just some of the many superstitions my family follows, but if you want to incorporate some time-told traditions, consider studying up on feng shui. Alice Inoue is a local feng shui expert and just might be able to offer you the guidance you are seeking.

HR COVER STORY MARCH 17 • 2013 3

Why ‘Country Manor Aluminum Shake’ is the right roofing system for you

etal’s share of the residential roofing market is rapidly increasing as more homeowners think in terms of sustainability and life-cycle costs. You want a roof that will last for the long term — one that you can forget about. Aluminum has proved to be one of the best metals for use in tropical marine environments such as Hawaii. The Country Manor Aluminum Shake (CMS) roof system was developed by Alcoa in 1974, and is now manufactured by Classic Products in Piqua, Ohio using 95 percent post-consumer recycled high-tensile aluminum. A cool, lightweight, fire-safe CMS roof for your home or townhouse complex may be just the right answer to solve your re-roofing problems by offering many advantages over other metals and conventional roofing, including:

M

• Aesthetics. Your home doesn’t have to resemble the nearby shopping center just because it has a tough and durable aluminum roof. CMS offers the beauty of real hand-split cedar, without the drawbacks. The deep, realistic texture and rough wood grain surface will add curb appeal to your home.

• Colors. CMS is available in many attractive earth tones and even multi-hued, textured finishes. All the infrared reflecting, cool coat-

ings are formulated using superior Kynar 500 resin, which is the toughest and most weather resistant paint system available. • Proven Protection. Once installed, Country Manor Aluminum Shakes takes care of its owners. Aluminum roofing is not a new concept. Its advantages have been proven all around the world. Even in

Honolulu there are hundreds of aluminum roofs more than 60 years old scattered all over the city. Homeowners who have had the CMS roof installed often say that they welcome extreme and stormy weather because it reassures them over and over of what a great decision they made many years ago to buy a roof from Aluminum Shake Roofing Inc. The unique four-way interlock and stainless steel fasteners use no clips and the roof actually holds tighter and tighter as wind speeds increase. • Quiet Strength. One common question about aluminum roofing concerns noise. Early metal roofs had no structural barriers to deaden sound. But CMS with its deep

texture and modern construction methods work together to form an effective sound barrier. Most homeowners actually say they like the way it sounds when it rains.

• Installation. There doesn’t have to be any compromise to getting a quality installation. Some contractors may take advantage of a homeowner’s limited knowledge of roofing products and proper procedures and cut a few corners to keep the sales price down while maintaining their profits. But Aluminum Shake Roofing Inc. will always use the best materials (even those you don’t see, such as the patented FoamGuard EPS inserts which are more than 40 percent denser than what is used in any other roof system) and employ proven installation methods to deliver the highest quality, most durable roof and real value to you.

• Warranty. The CMS system is protected with a non-prorated manufacturer’s limited warranty covering 100 percent of the cost of both materials and labor for your lifetime.

To learn more about the roof system, the warranty and for a free detailed estimate, call Fred Rehm of Aluminum Shake Roofing Inc. at 847-8885. ASR has successfully added value to the thousands of homes they have re-roofed all around Hawaii during the last 24 years. MARCH 17, 2013 • 3

HAWAII HOME EXPO

Making your outdoor life blissful eing in the most isolated place in the world has its benefits. Sure there are some drawbacks to life in Hawaii, but overall, the positives outweigh the negatives. For example, rarely does the afternoon temperature drop below 80 degrees, and open-toed shoes are acceptable forms of footwear at almost nearly every venue. People on the Mainland fantasize about our lives. Are you taking advantage as you should? Embracing the Hawaiian lifestyle is relatively simple: spend as much time outside as possible, add water, repeat. Of course, we have to work to support this lifestyle, and the ocean is not in everyone’s front yard, however, you can still create your own version of outdoor living. Start in the backyard — you know, that place where you lost your kids

B

HAWAII HOME EXPO contact // 695-EXPO address // 2933 Koapaka St. web // www.hawaiihomeexpo.com a few years back, where the grass is taller then you? Use the following formula: Brazilian Quartzite Flagstone + BBQ + Jacuzzi™ = Happy Outdoor Living. It seems too good to be true, but really outdoor-living bliss is that easy. Brazilian Quartzite is a natural material that looks great, is non-slip (so the long-lost kids you found when you mowed the grass won’t slide into the neighbors’ fence), and this natural stone will not kill your wallet. The BBQ is a no-brainer; nowadays you can get models that do nearly everything with virtually no effort. The Jacuzzi brings the water to your back door, and allows you to relax with oodles of jets massaging each muscle. If your New Year’s body has not reached its goal yet, no worries; a Jacuzzi lets you enjoy the water in the privacy of your own home. Consider something else: You won’t need to worry about creatures biting your toes in a Jacuzzi, and you can see the bottom in a Jacuzzi (not always the case with the ocean).

With this sign, it's time for homeowners to consider investing in high-tech home upgrades that not only increase their home's value and simplify everyday tasks, but also create a dream home ambience for the entire family to enjoy. You’ll love Al’s tubs s your bathtub or tile chipped, stained, rusted or an unattractive color? Is your fiberglass tub or shower stall cracked or leaking? Is your countertop dated? Does your sink look sunk? Don't throw them in the dumpster along with your hard-earned money. Al's Bathtub Refinishing will give you the look of a brand new bathtub without the cost. Refinishing a bathtub is one of the best ways to give your bathroom a cost-effective make-over that will save you thousands of dollars by avoiding the costly fee associated with replacement. Replacing can take days or even weeks to complete. By refinishing, you can save up to 75 percent, versus the cost of replacement, and have your tub looking like new again in just one day. You may have come cross the option of using a DIY kit to refinish your bathroom without experience in applying acrylics and the professional tools to make the end result looked polished, you may end up with off-color and uneven surfaces that will quickly deteriorate. Most of these kits are rolled on or in a spray can form which can never replicate the results of professional application. Many of our customers approach us after already having made a

Looking for Signs When it comes to finding greater harmony within the walls of your home, begin by understanding the natural traits and characteristics of your other half

with

Alice Inoue

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I use your guidance to set up my home, and, although our home is for the most part “feng shuifriendly,” we just can’t seem to get things done here. I know you are also a professional astrologer. Can you comment on this — is it our personalities that are not compatible? I feel it is best to make consistent progress on projects in the home whereas my husband gets distracted a lot. I am a Capricorn, my husband is a Gemini.

realized early on that feng shui is not the answer to everything, no matter how much I wanted to believe that I could create luck and harmony simply by clearing clutter, facing an auspicious direction or managing the flow of energy. However, after consulting in hundreds of homes and businesses, I now see that we create our own luck and harmony with our awareness. While feng shui has energetic influence on a person, it will never change one’s intrinsic nature, but astrology will help you understand one’s natural traits and characteristics so that you can accept people in your life for who they are, instead of wishing they were someone they are not.

I

Conflict stems from judgments on behavior Conflict between the people living together can stem from the need to be right. Most of us express our opinion, believing that we are right, but that sets up the scenario for an argument whenever anyone disagrees, judging us as wrong. I bet those of you who are “neat” like to show my articles to an untidy person in the home because you want that individual to change and be more like you! Am I right? The key is to realize that the person with whom you are in conflict is probably not trying to intentionally upset you, just being his or natural herself. Can that person change with intent? Yes! Can you change your per-

spective? Yes! No right or wrong exists, just a difference in perspective. See if you can find a way to inspire the person to change rather than judging him or her as “wrong.” A general look at the signs Astrology can give you general insight about a person’s nature by looking at what sign the Sun was in at his or her birth. Although the time and location of birth will show more precise prevailing influences, you may see a part of yourself, your spouse or children in one or more of the following descriptions. If you relate to more than one sign, other planetary influences are likely strong in your chart. Have fun with this! Aries: You do not finish what you start, even though you enthusiastically bought everything for the project. Advice: Make the starting of a new project conditional upon finishing the existing project. Taurus: You procrastinate on projects that you know you need to get started on. Advice: Ask a friend to hold you accountable and set up a deadline and reward for yourself for finishing. Gemini: You likely have 10 different projects going on at once, none of which

are completed. Advice: Cross those you haven’t started off the list, turn off the phone, and focus on one! Cancer: Home improvement projects interest you, but your need for security causes you to hold onto excess. Advice: Dispose of expired food in the fridge to open up a flow of energy for yourself. Leo: You have a lot of projects that need to be done, but often choose to have fun instead. Advice: Do nothing. The Capricorn in the house will get fed up and find someone else to get it done or make you feel bad about not doing it. Virgo: You need to wash your hands ten times and conditions have to be perfect before you start, then you run out of time. Advice: Tell yourself that getting sweaty is okay and you will have time to shower. Libra: You invite your friends over to help and end up socializing instead. Advice: On project day, invite only Capricorn (hard workers) and Taurus (once they start, they finish) friends. Scorpio: You are all or nothing and will only work on projects if they interest you. Advice: Ask a Pisces to help. They have a hard time saying no.

Sagittarius: You talk about a project a lot yet never seem to get around to it. Advice: Keep talking about it until the Capricorn in the house tells you to get serious and get it done. Capricorn: You will likely either get it done yourself or tell someone else to do it. Advice: Make a plan, have a goal, and realize that everyone is not as goal and achievement-oriented as you. Aquarius: You will take on any project but then procrastinate, and, when working, you are messy and disorganized. Advice: Just do your own thing, no matter what the Capricorn says you should or shouldn’t do. Pisces: You have great visions of how you want the project to look when completed but get distracted by life. Advice: Don’t let others talk you into helping them on their projects. Instead, put your focus on yourself.

So, as you can see, Capricorns are more structured and want to get to the top of the mountain, while Geminis want to juggle multiple tasks at the bottom — neither right nor wrong, but, in your case, frustrating. Understanding each other is the first step, and finding something that will give a Gemini a reason to get to the top of the mountain is key to both of you getting what you want. Today is all in good fun, but next week I will answer another question along these lines about how astrological signs interact with each other and what you can do to be more accepting, creating greater harmony in the home!

ISLAND INSURANCE

MARCH 17 • 2013

Protect your home from ground termite damage A s Hawaii’s most damaging pest, ground termites are responsible for nearly $100 million in property damage annually. Their ability to enter homes through miniscule cracks as small as 1/32 inches and eat from the ground up enables them to remain undetected for months or even years. Ground termites are active 24 hours a day and not only destroy wood material, but can also damage plastic plumbing pipes, sub-flooring and even swimming pool liners. Hawaii’s warm, humid climate is ideal for ground termites to thrive and their colonies can num-

wice a year, I make the trip that so many people from Hawaii love — to our ninth island! No, I don’t stay at the Cal, and I don’t go to gamble or see the shows. I take these trips for my business, and like many other interior designers, boutique owners and buyers across the country, I attend our industry’s market event in glitzy Las Vegas! The World Market Center in Las Vegas comprises an incredible five million square feet, much of which is transformed for the semi-annual trade show featuring the latest in furniture, lighting, area rugs and accents. Anything and everything you need to make your home beautiful can be found in three buildings with up to 16 floors each. On my most recent trip in late February, I took my assistants Kara, Julie and Audra along. We were shopping for clients and our showroom, and of course, looking for new sources of inspiration. And inspired we got! I’ll use this column to give you some quick tips about creative repurposing.

The Old New Thing Applying the “reduce, reuse, recycle” axiom to interior design yields a new mission and a new look. Here’s how you can rethink, reclaim and restyle

T

14 • MARCH 17, 2013

DAVE REZENDEZ PHOTO

As I’ve said before, reclaimed furniture and accents are not just a phase. This truly is a whole new way of thinking and designing. As time goes on, people are finding more and more creative ways to use not only reclaimed wood, but to repurpose almost anything for form or function. I found these beautiful wall plaques made of wood reclaimed from barn floors at a past Las Vegas Market. They were displayed as interesting pieces of wall art that can be hung either singly or in multiples to create a grouping. I have some at our showroom, and I used some in a Diamond Head house that we remodeled and furnished. For that client, the Vavuls, I couldn’t find just the right headboard for the master bedroom — until I saw these plaques. Why not put six of them together and turn a piece of art into a one-of-a-kind headboard for a king-size bed? Voila!

Sometimes, even when you have hundreds of thousands of square feet of items appearing before you day after day, you can learn to see beyond how they’re displayed and find a creative solution for your design needs. Take a look at how older, worn and even broken tennis rackets can be turned into a whimsical piece of art.

I took a picture for a client whose son is an avid tennis player. Wouldn’t this make a great centerpiece for a kid’s bedroom? Or could it inspire someone like you to hunt through your closet or your parents’ spare bedroom to see if you can repurpose something to create a unique piece of art that speaks to you? Don’t look at things at face value. See what you already have lying around, look at it in a creative light, and see whether you can make something decorative or functional. It could be the most interesting piece in your home! I’ll be back next week with more for you from that treasure house in Las Vegas!

A concrete commitment to meet homeowners’ needs BY WENDELL GUIEB uality work, satisfaction and good prices are the priorities at my company, W.G. Construction LLC. I started contracting concrete in 1990. Our company does any amount of work, from small to big projects. We work with everything from flat grounds to the hardest areas of your project, and we still provide a reasonable price. I will make sure before starting the work that both parties understand the scope of work when installing a concrete slab. Also, I’ll make sure to explain what the contract price is. When installing a concrete slab, I will install base materials, compact the base correctly, install wire mess or rebar for reinforcement and pour the right pounds per square inch (psi) of concrete. What is important about installing concrete is to follow the right procedure of finishing the concrete. I have worked with different general contractors as their sub-contractor doing concrete work for both commercial and residential projects. I have also built retaining walls for new homes and perimeter walls. We build any area of your project, which can include compaction, rebar installation, CMU (concrete) blocks installation or fully grouting the area. We specialize in building new homes, renovations, additions, “jack up” homes or the smallest project in your home.

Q

W.G. CONSTRUCTION LLC contact // 676-8898

We also build new or renovate commercial offices. As the owner, I fully supervise the project to make sure the job will go according to plan. My crew will always keep the job site clean and safe. I play the role of quality control when building to make sure we only use quality materials. My goal is to make sure we finish the job in the committed

time given to the customer. Quality work and satisfaction at the end of the project is important. We work with our clients by meeting with them first to discuss what type of home and design they want. If they don’t have an architect, we have some architects that we work with to design their home the way they want until they are satisfied with the design. We can also process the permits for our clients. Most of our new clients are referred to us by our existing clients, which shows they are satisfied with our work.

HydroFlow is silent, doesn’t change the taste of your water and it is environmentally safe just like all the products Nano Tek-On uses to clean and seal glass, granite and concrete surfaces, protecting them from being attacked again by contaminants. You see, the same thing that happens inside the pipes in your house also happens to your windows and walkways. It is part of life in Hawaii, because ours is salt-filled ocean air that deposits minerals on exposed windows and

other porous surfaces. The mineral buildup has an irritating way of staining, spotting and streaking, eventually ruining your once-beautiful granite or glass. Nano Tek-On’s environmentally friendly process cleans the buildup on these surfaces, then seals the glass or stone with invisible sealant that makes these surfaces nonporous. The surfaces will then repel the contaminants. And, all you need to do is wipe down the surfaces to keep them clean. efore purchasing a new set of cabinets for your new kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, there are some important things you should consider. First, keep in mind that cabinets account for 40 to 50 percent of the total cost of your kitchen or bathroom remodel, so setting your total budget figure will be one of the first things you’ll need to do.

B

Are stock cabinets for you? Stock cabinets are the least expensive option and are constructed in standard shapes and sizes; however, they are available in a limited number of woods or finishes and offer few style options beyond basic drawers and cupboards. If you plan on living in your home for only a short time or are working with a tight budget, stock cabinets are your best bet. But if this is going to be the kitchen or bath of your dreams, you should look for top-quality construction and materials found with semi-custom and custom cabinets. As you choose, remember this tip — window coverings reduce solar heat most effectively if the surface facing the glass is a reflective color like white. One type of window treatment that is very effective at reducing summer heat is vertical or horizontal window blinds. The

reason for this is the slat type window blinds with the numerous openings between the slats. These slats offer versatility as well as the option to control light and ventilation by adjusting them to block and reflect the sun. They can be tilted, lifted or completely closed to allow for varying degrees of light to flow through. For ideas and assistance, contact Pacific Island Construction for a free appointment.

HAWAII CENTRAL FEDERAL CREDIT UNION MARCH 17 • 2013 21

What’s better than a 0 percent PV loan? R eady to purchase a photovoltaic (PV) system for your home? Yes, it’s a big expense, but with state and federal tax credits and the right loan, it could be more affordable than you think. Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union (HCFCU) has introduced a new Solar Photovoltaic Loan Special to make it easier for homeowners to go green and save. Here is what makes HCFCU’s PV loan different from others:

• Unlike the extremely low or 0 percent financing offered by some other lenders, the HCFCU Solar Photovoltaic Loan Special does not come with hidden fees or mark-ups to the consumer or the solar contractor. • HCFCU encourages the borrower to ask the contractor for “cash pricing.â€? This allows the consumer to see what the price for the PV system would be if they financed through HCFCU. Hidden fees are ultimately passed on to the consumer by increasing the overall cost of the PV system. • You will be able to work with the solar contractor of your choice. HCFCU does not limit your choices and will work with your solar contractor. • HCFCU’s PV loan program is offered as an unsecured personal loan rather than

a home equity line of credit. This allows you to free up the equity in your home for other improvements and uses. • No payments are due for the first six months, so you can enjoy the benefits of your new PV system immediately.

• Quick responses and personal service are standard. As a credit union, HCFCU is dedicated to providing the best service and knows the importance of a fast turnaround. For more information about this PV loan special or any of the other loan products available, call HCFCU’s Consumer Loan Department at 536-3677, visit their office at 681 S. King St., or access their website at www.hccu.info. HCFCU is federally insured by NCUA. Certain restrictions apply. Interest will continue to accrue during the first six months of the loan. Please consult a tax adviser for tax credits and benefits.

BONTERRA RENEWABLE ENERGY AND SOLAR POWER

A bright future with a trusted solar provider BONTERRA RENEWABLE ENERGY AND SOLAR POWER contact // 548-7957 web // info@bonterrasolar.com bonterrasolar.com their superior customer service, first-class products, or their in-house team of craftsmen that install systems — Bonterra has risen ahead of the pack time and again. t’s no secret that in the past few years Hawaii has witnessed the beginnings of a clean energy renaissance. Leading this new energy revolution is the power of the sun. But with so many new solar providers popping up in the islands, it can be difficult to find a company worthy of your trust. Amid this sea of solar providers, one company, Bonterra Solar, has built itself a reputation for top-tier equipment, quality installations and the best customer service in the business.

I

Hawaii’s Trusted Solar Provider Since becoming Hawaii’s most trusted solar installer, Bonterra has worked extensively with both residential clients as well as

commercial developers to earn rave reviews. With their sturdy reputation, Bonterra has partnered with the Department of Hawaiian Homelands to develop the first net-zero energy community in the nation at Kaupuni Village, and they’ve also become the trusted solar provider for all Gentry Homes developments in the stat — an impressive feat to say the least. Commitment to Customers When it comes to working with Hawaii’s homeowners, you’d be hard-pressed to find another solar provider more committed to the customer. In every facet of the solar installation process — whether through

Zero-Money Down Financing When it comes to saving customers money, Bonterra has once again built itself a reputation head and shoulders above their counterparts. With their local leasing vehicle’s new zero-down leasing option, you can build a brighter solar future without any upfront cost. Bonterra also knows that there’s been a great deal of confusion surrounding the state of Hawaii’s amendments to the tax incentives available for solar installations. Through the fog, Bonterra has been able to provide clarity to their customers. For the average family, the state and federal government will continue to provide tax

incentives for up to 65 percent of the cost of installation. Now, some families may require more energy, and others less, but if you’re looking to save money on your electric bill and help save the environment, it’s still a great time to go solar. To find out what system will best suit your needs, contact one of Bonterra’s friendly representatives today.

A Company with a Conscience Proof that Bonterra truly cares about the community, the company recently initiated their Good Deed Campaign. Every month, Bonterra reaches out to local nonprofits and positive organizations on Oahu to volunteer their time and talent. Just last month, Bonterra employees volunteered at the Hawaiian Humane Society as well as donated a solar hot water heater.

A Brighter Future with Bonterra Whether it’s their high standards for their equipment and installations, their straighttalk and good deals, or their commitment to their community, it’s clear that when it comes to ranking solar providers in the islands, there’s no company that Hawaii trusts with its future more than Bonterra. Call Bonterra today to learn more about their special deals for the month of March.

BIG ROCK HAWAII

Still ‘Rock’ stars after 30 years ig Rock is a store in Honolulu that is exceptional. It manufactures and sells all sorts of things that are unavailable anywhere else in the world. That’s because Big Rock specializes in making copies of our Hawaiian stones and has been doing this for 30 years. There is no other business like it. You can’t imagine how many rocks, boulders and pieces of stone the owners, Bonnie Cooper and Brian Joy, have accumulated throughout the 30 years, and they are always adding to the collection. Some of the beautiful stone bowls and unusual boulders have been lent by homeowners, who have seen and appreciated the quality of the copies and wanted to contribute to the collection. Molds are taken from the original pieces they find, and then reproductions are cast in a lightweight concrete. There is unquestionably no way a person can tell the difference between Big Rock and the real thing, and just think of how much of our islands’ natural stone has been conserved through Big Rock’s method of casting copies! Even after 30 years here on Oahu there are still many people who may have “heard” about Big Rock, but have never taken the time to visit the showroom, and Bonnie and

B

Brian confirm this each time they participate in one of Oahu’s many trade shows: “The people are always excited and impressed

BIG ROCK HAWAII contact // 834-7625 (ROCK) address // 1050 Kikowaena Place web // www.bigrockhawaii.com

with the few things they see at our show displays, but admit they have not been to the store. Once they come, they are happy they did and always spread the word to friends and neighbors.” Why would you use Big Rock? Well, it is much lighter weight than real rock, for example, the boulders do not have to be dug into the ground as they already have a flat bottom. The Moss Rock stepping stones are 3 inches thick and ready to place, but they look as though you have miraculously found natural rock for a pathway that is flat! The stone items can be used to dress up lanais too, surrounded with a bit of river rock and perhaps

a small fountain. Big Rock stone veneer is used to cover any and all wall surfaces, giving you a natural stone wall appearance, but it’s only about 1 and ½ inches thick and is easy to install! Actually all Big Rock stone products are easy to use, and Brian and Bonnie always encourage homeowners to consider doing the work themselves, whether it’s a rock wall or garden project. Big Rock has the stone veneer, stone benches and tables, boulders, stone bowls of many sizes, bridges, garden edgers, ponds, waterfall boulders, garden ornaments,

Buddhas, tikis and much more. Of course, not everything at Big Rock is made there. Some garden accent pieces and other goodies are brought in, such as a variety of rain chains, Japanese-style lanterns, bamboo fountain kits, pond pumps, liners, filters, underwater lighting, birdbaths, decorative fountains and more than a dozen pre-cast waterfalls. Big Rock would like to invite you to come by for a visit. You don’t have to buy, but they would like you to see how 30 years of being Hawaii’s “Rock” stars has made them famous for the quality and uniqueness of their products.

AMERICAN CARPET COMPANY

Ever-growing carpet company has the local community well-covered A s American Carpet One celebrates its 39th Anniversary as a locally owned and operated fullservice home floor and design center, the company continues to grow and improve along with the communities it serves. It began serving Hawaii on Jan. 2, 1974 in a 1,000-square-foot space with just five employees. Fast forward nearly four decades later, and American Carpet One has grown to include 110 employees from administrative staff to installers working out of its current Sand Island locale, which includes an 8,000-square-foot showroom and 33,000 square feet of warehouse space. The ample storage capacity allows the company to stock the most flooring product in the Islands, while also expediting the delivery and installation of products for its customers. American Carpet One was the first to introduce Stainmaster to Hawaii in 1986, and became a Stainmaster Flooring Center — one of 200 nationwide. The distinction gave the company access to the exclusive products and services, as well as the Ultra Life Advantage, which affords customers a warranty on the products. The company also benefits from its involvement with the Carpet One cooperative, which it joined in 1988 and serves as the seventh largest cooperative in the world. The cooperative includes roughly 1,200 other locally owned and operated businesses across the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Guam. According to American Carpet One sales manager Aaron Okamoto, collectively last year the cooperative generated more than $3.8 billion in floor covering purchases, and the resulting savings are passed on to the customers here in Hawaii. In 2001, American Carpet One introduced its insurance division. While the operation does not sell insurance, it is the designated floor covering installer for State Farm, Allstate, USAA, Fireman’s Fund and Farmer’s Insurances. The service is set up as a direct repair program through which the insurance carriers have enrolled, so when customers file a claim, the carriers then assign American Carpet One to handle the job. Three years later, American Carpet One 24 • MARCH 17, 2013

became the first to offer one of the most popular flooring options on the market in Karndean — a vinyl floor covering billed as “The Perfect Floor.” The Luxury Vinyl Tile represents the fastest-growing floor covering category in the world. As Okamoto explained, “It’s a pure vinyl that provides a stain resistant flooring option. The product fits with our island lifestyle. When installed properly, it makes your floor pretty much water resistant, so in the event of flooding, it will survive. Anytime wood, laminate or carpet gets damaged, you need to rip it out, throw it away, and start again. This is one floor that will survive, and termites

haven’t figured out how to eat it yet, so we’re calling it the perfect floor. The design applications are endless.” For large industrial flooring replacement projects, American Carpet One acquired a secret weapon: The Terminator. The ridealong scraping machine pulls up all sorts of flooring, from vinyl to wood and carpet, and makes way for new applications. The process has led to substantial reductions in labor costs, which equate to savings for customers. Three years ago, the company also introduced a Healthier Living installation process, which guarantees to improve the indoor air quality during a flooring installation by killing bacteria and allergens and purifying the air. Last year, American Carpet One became the first company in Hawaii to have all its

journeymen carpet installers approved by Certified Floorcovering Installers (CFI), an international non-profit organization established in the early 1990s. The installers are trained and certified with the end goal of assisting homeowners and customers by ensuring that those working on their projects are indeed qualified. Installers working at the company need to pass both written and performance tests in order to gain CFI certification. These certified installers are identified by the CFI seals on both their uniforms and work vehicles. “We don’t just sell flooring; we build

relationships in the community,” said Okamoto. “We make friends and that’s what it’s all about.” To set up a free consultation, including measurements of a home or business, log on to www.AmericanCarpetOne.com or call 447-2752.
