friend of mine just moved back to town. She’s on a budget, so for her new place she’s relied on hand-me-down furniture, thrift-store finds and plenty of creativity. When she told me she got a headboard for just $10, my first thought was that it had to be hideous. Wrong. It was genius. She purchased a $10 wooden door from Reuse Hawaii, painted it yellow and attached it to her bed frame. There are plenty of ways to make headboards or improve upon existing ones. They can be inexpensive, ecofriendly conversation pieces that double as focal points.

Headboards don’t have to cost hundreds to make a statement. Get creative and you could have a custom look for a fraction of the price. The best part is you don’t even have to be handy to do it.

A

• Curtain call. Hang a curtain rod above your bed and suspend fabric of your choice from it. Just remember to use enough fabric so that it can drop behind your mattress, and hang the rod so that it sits wider than your bed on both sides.

• Foam party. Use foam board, fiberfill and fabric to upholster a wooden headboard. Cut the foam to match the shape of the headboard. Then, cut the fiberfill to the same shape, leaving some extra on the sides (5 to 6 inch-

es) to pull up and around the foam and headboard. Lay your desired fabric down, then place batting on top, then the foam on top of that, followed by the headboard. Use a staple gun to attach the fabric and batting to the back of the board.Trim the excess and affix to the wall with flush mounts. • Stick it up. Decals come in readyto-stick options, and some even come in headboard shapes. Fabric can work in the same way. Find a fabric you like and cut it to the shape and size you desire. Then, spray the back with liquid starch and let it sit overnight. Tape it to the wall to hold it in place while you iron over it. Then, remove the tape.

On another note ... In last week’s column I suggested using rocks for drainage in container gardens. A gardening expert recommended it to me years ago, and I’ve been passing along the advice. It turns out it’s a common misconception that this improves drainage. As pointed out by a local horticulturist, studies have shown that water does not move easily across differing materials. Instead, the best method is to mix potting medium with perlite and/or cinder.

ust as its name suggests, Elite Design Group LLC is on its way to being in the top ranks of Hawaii’s competitive construction industry. The design and construction firm was founded in late 2010, and though the company is relatively new, Elite Design Group and its project managers boast a dozen years’ experience on the local build scene, having served with several other companies and businesses on Oahu. Having worked for others most of their careers, the team at Elite Design Group made the decision two-and-a-half years ago to step out on their own, feeling they could benefit their customers better in this way. Elite Design Group centers its work on both commercial and residential projects; however, what sets the company apart from others is its one-on-one relationship with clients, which allows Elite Design Group and its team of 30 employees to arrive at the best final outcome for everyone involved. The Elite Design Group team sets out to build a relationship with its clientele in order to educate them and give them the knowledge they need to work within a budget that is right for them. The company does this by walking clients stepby-step through the entire construction phase. This way, if a conflict in design or price point arises, the team will be able to find a solution without sacrificing the clients’ vision. “At Elite Design Group, we want our customers to come away feeling happy and satisfied with the final outcome of

HAWAII GLASS BLOCK

‘Block’ out some time to upgrade your shower B ack by popular demand, Hawaii Glass Block will again host a free workshop to show you how you can remove your old bathtub or shower and replace it with the wedi® 100 percent waterproof shower system and add a glass block wall so you can eliminate a shower door or shower curtain. The free workshop will be held at 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 16 at the Hawaii Glass Block showroom and warehouse located at 284 Kalihi St. The wedi Fundo total shower solution is the industry’s innovative application for constructing waterproof tiled showers. With its uncomplicated assembly process and ability to be tiled the same day, the system installs quickly and efficiently, reducing substrate preparedness from days to hours. The wedi system is in stock at Hawaii Glass Block. The Fundo bases can be easily cut to size or extended using pre-sloped extension panels to fit any custom shower application. Additionally, since it’s up to 80 percent lighter than conventional shower methods, the wedi system can be installed without threatening a building’s structural properties. The wedi extruded polystyrene products are used to support Energy Star qualifying construction.

Here are topics that will be covered during the workshop: • Why should I use the wedi system? • Do I have room for a glass block wall panel? • Are glass blocks difficult to install? Those who should attend the workshop are: • Homeowners considering a bathroom remodel • Do-it-yourselfers • Handymen • Contractors A featured contractor will discuss why he or she uses the wedi system. And the company will show you how easy it is to build a glass block panel using its “Stack & Grout” method, or how it can prefabricate a wall for you to easily install. A glass block panel allows natural daylight into your home for positive energy flow. Reserve your seat by emailing becky@hawaii glassblock.com or by calling 841-2565. Hawaii Glass Block is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Its knowledgeable staff will be happy to assist you with your design. Fall-prevention strategies everyone can fall in love with Y ou’re only as old as you feel, which is great news for homeowners of any age, especially today’s baby boomers, as 61 percent report they feel younger than their true age. But despite feeling great, the reality is that adults may need to make minor changes to their homes and lifestyles to ensure they can continue to enjoy safe, healthy and independent lives. If you are part of this demographic, you’re likely thinking, “Not me. Not yet.” But did you know that one in three older Americans falls every year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention? Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for people aged 65 and older. Don’t worry — protecting yourself from falls does not mean using a walker or wearing an alert siren. Try these simple tips to protect yourself and improve your home and lifestyle: Prepare your home According to the Home Safety Council, more falls occur in the bathroom than any

other room in the home. But don’t fear, adding safety to your bathroom can add exquisite styling as well. Grab bars are the most common bath safety product installed, and brands such as Moen Home Care offer stylish design-

er grab bars with accessories, which combine the safety benefits of a grab bar with common bath essentials. Options include a towel bar, a paper holder, a straight shelf and a corner shelf, making each item functional and fashionable.

Plus, each is available in popular finishes such as Chrome, Brushed Nickel and Old World Bronze, to coordinate with the rest of your bath. Next, add style and peace of mind in the shower by adding a fold-down shower seat. Unlike traditional bath seats that can be intrusive, this wall-mount design from Moen Home Care folds down for a comfortable and secure shower seat to avoid slips and falls, yet folds up for a thin, compact profile when not in use. Plus, the teak wood and stylish metal trim will accentuate the look of even the most upscale shower. For more information, visit www. moen.com/homecare. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

AKAMAI PEST SOLUTIONS

Get rid of termites before swarming season begins S pringtime in Hawaii is known for many things, but the least favorite event that occurs is the beginning of swarm season for both drywood and subterranean termites. When termite colonies reach a certain size, swarmers are released to locate and build new colonies. The only positive part of this is that very few swarmers actually stay alive long enough to make it into a crack or hole in a piece of wood and shed their wings, pair up to mate and begin a new colony of termites. Keep in mind that drywood termites eat very slowly and their colonies take a very long time to become a substantial size. Once drywood termites get into a piece of wood, it takes about three years to produce enough offspring and eat enough wood to excrete an amount of fecal pellets that will end up being exposed and showing that a colony exists. Akamai Pest Solutions has been treating homes and businesses for nine years throughout the state and offers a safer method to treating drywood termite infestations — orange oil. People are realizing the dangers of tent fumigation and that it’s not always 100 percent effective. The biggest draw to the safer method is it allows people to not have stay in a hotel, bag

AKAMAI PEST SOLUTIONS contact // 754-3393 web // www.akamaipestsolution.com

food, risk roof and solar damage or hire a security guard to protect their homes from break-ins. XT-2000 Orange Oil is a totally organic product. When wood is treated with it, the orange oil has a capillary affect, meaning it travels through the infested wood for days so that termites cannot escape it. It will kill the adults instantly and kill termite eggs as well, which fumigation will not. So there is less risk for reinfestation. The great thing about this treatment is that customers don’t have to move out of the home or business. They can be there when it is treated and it only leaves behind a pleasant orange smell for a day. It is so much safer for children, pets and those who have health and mobility issues. The process begins with a thorough inspection of your home or business and finding the areas of infestation, which

are then treated. Akamai provides a warranty with all of its orange oil treatments. An average home will take one to two hours to inspect and a minimum of four hours to treat. The treatment time depends on the size of the structure and how much infestation is present. The company has treated homes, doctors offices, condominium projects and schools, buildings for the University of Hawaii, the state and federal government, care homes and so many unique structures where safety and convenience are important. Akamai Pest Solutions also provides ground treatment service, but uses a regular liquid termiticide because the orange oil will not leave the necessary residual for a long warranty.

Refresh Your Memory Need to increase your memory retention? Study these tips and change your workspace so you can boost productivity and increase energy flow impedes learning, but a tidy work area fosters a sense of order, enhances concentration, brings good energy and aids in destressing. So remove all unnecessary and distracting items before you start working, keeping 50 percent of your desk visible at all times.

with

Alice Inoue

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Help! I am a 53-year-old female, and I just found out that I will have to pass an exam in order to get a raise. I thought I had ample time to take this test, but the deadline is next month. My memory retention is horrible. Do you have any suggestions?

Tip #4: Do not work under overhanging shelves In feng shui, shelving directly over your desk symbolizes bur-

h ... memory retention! Certain environmental things can be done to optimize learning and information absorption. The tips I share in this article are not only excellent for learning environments, but can also be used in your home office to support greater productivity.

A

A short story about my memory Recently, I found out that I have a not very well-known dysfunction called “prosopagnosia,” or face blindness, the inability to recognize faces. My case is not severe. I can easily recognize those I see on a regular basis, but am unable to recognize others with whom I have spent only a few hours or see only once in a while. I was relieved to have an explanation after all these years, and I’m sharing it because if you are a client who I have physically met but whom I seem not to recognize on the street, stop me if I walk past you, and, when you do stop me, tell me your name and mention how I know you. My memory otherwise is intact!

corner of your room, farthest from the entrance with a solid wall to your back, giving you the greatest command of your space. You want to be able to see the entire room from your desk. If this is not possible, at the very least, sit facing the entrance, and if that is not feasible, place a mirror on the desk so that you can see behind you.

Tips for absorbing and retaining information Unfortunately, no amount of feng shui can help me with my prosopagnosia, but I can use feng shui to enhance my study and work area and maximize the energy for absorbing and retaining information. Follow these tips to build a physical foundation for retention:

Tip #2: Have good lighting Although this may seem like common sense, one of the classic rules in feng shui is to have proper and appropriate lighting. You can use two lamps for optimum brightness, but ensure that the light is gentle on your eyes, so avoid fluorescents whenever possible. If you must use fluorescent lighting, use an incandescent lamp simultaneously to counter the harshness.

Tip #1: Check your positioning If at all possible, position yourself in the

Tip #3: Neaten your work, study area Disorganization causes stress and

dens hanging over your head and can also represent headaches, which, of course, you want to avoid at all costs. Tip #5: Use metal elements in your study area Metal is an excellent element for a study area, bringing the qualities of clarity, efficiency and precision. To help maintain focus, use metal accessories such as pens, lamps, pencil holders, even a metal clock. Using a metal desk, though, can result in metal overload, creating a cold and uninviting environment.

Tip #6: Use hematite for grounding If you are the type who likes to have stones or something “lucky” in your work environment, hematite, considered a metal element because of its shiny surface, will help you concentrate and ground your energy.

Tip # 7: Bamboo helps your concentration, positive energy flow Decorative bamboo on your desk helps you stay focused and fosters positive energy flow, and entwined fronds energetically enhance information retention. For positive energy flow, the more stalks the better. Base the number of stalks you use on what you want to achieve. One stalk means simplicity and a meaningful life; two stalks mean love; three stalks mean wealth, happiness, and long life, or longevity. (The word for four in Chinese is similar to death, so using four stalks is considered rude and unlucky.) Five stalks mean wealth in all four bodies, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Six stalks mean peace, harmony and good luck; seven stalks mean good health; eight stalks mean growth and prosperity; nine stalks mean great luck, or good fortune, and 10 stalks mean perfection or wholeness. Twenty-one stalks mean blessings.

Whether you apply one or all of these tips to your work or study space, you will help to create the best possible environment for concentration, memory retention, productivity and energy flow. Now, if I can only figure out a way to help me remember faces!

Kitchen updates that won’t break the bank T ake a look around your home and think about which spaces you use most. If the kitchen made the list, you’re not alone. For most homeowners, the kitchen is the heart of their home, and all the time spent there likely causes a fair amount of wear and tear. If this sounds like your kitchen, it might be time for a remodel. While the National Association of Home Builders finds that home remodeling

is at its highest level since 2005, homeowners are still being understandably cautious with their investments. The good news is that no matter the size of your budget, there are cost-effective ways to update your kitchen to revitalize the center of your home. 1. Yes, you can update your cabinets The most dramatic change you can make in your kitchen is to update the cabinetry. But for many, the thought of new cabinetry equates to a budget breaker. According to Sarah Reep, design lead for QualityCabinets, it certainly doesn’t have to be. “The key is to do your homework and find a brand that offers the trifecta of style, function and affordability,” said Reep. To keep pace with consumer requests and spending, QualityCabinets recently expanded its budget-friendly Woodstar line to include additional indemand finish options, door styles and accessible design features. “Homeowners want to stay on budget without compromising on style or function. We designed this line so they don’t have to,” said Reep. 2. Set the stage with a beautiful backsplash Another affordable way to make a statement is by updating or adding a backsplash. “A backsplash is a subtle way to update

your kitchen. Choose clean white subway tiles or add some drama with interesting patterns or colorful glass tiles,” advised Reep. Home improvement stores carry DIY tile kits in a variety of colors that are fairly simple to install yourself. Additionally, stylish, removable tile decals can help jazz up your walls quickly without the cost and commitment of tile. 3. Everything but the kitchen sink Not quite. The sink is one of the most frequently used features in a kitchen but easily ignored. Updating your kitchen sink to serve as a focal point of the room can do wonders for your space. A beautiful apronfront sink or sleek new faucet can create a dramatic update to your kitchen and provide that attention-grabbing “wow” factor. Pair it with a new coat of paint or light fixtures that complement your design vision and you’ll be amazed by what you can accomplish.

By making any or all of these changes to your kitchen, an affordable and stylish space is easily attainable. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

First impressions matter Right from the get-go, you can create a favorable image of your home and workspace through the effective use of colors and style, and the correct projection of your brand

ast week I shared with you the most fun part of our remodel project at Y. Hata & Co.: transforming a pair of shipping containers into a bright, relaxing Google-inspired employee lounge. This week I’ll share with you the most challenging of the 14 spaces we tackled. For Y. Hata, a food services company on Sand Island, the warehouse receiving area serves two purposes. It’s the entry for delivery guys heading into the warehouse and refrigerated section, but it also leads to a public restroom and executive offices upstairs. The challenge was upscaling a functional thoroughfare to create a stylish, company-branded first impression for the public and people coming in for >> After meetings. As you can see from the PHOTOS BY JUSTIN DOTSON before-photo, this area was a hot mess — certainly not inviting or reflecting the progressive nature of the company. Since Y. Hata is celebrating 100 years, I felt this would be the perfect environment to pay tribute to its past as well as look to the future. I wanted to create a space with both a retro feel and a modern, progressive edge. Keeping the Y. Hata color scheme of red, black, gray and >> Before white, I created a facade of 12 feet and replaced the chain-link As for the future? space not for the identity or position you have now, but for what you strive to be. Then, find a creative way to make your statement. It was important to Y. Hata executives to display the company’s mission statement and core values for all to see. To add resonance and visual interest to these statements, I had them printed across enlarged black-andwhite photos, turning them into pieces of art. Upstairs, down a hallway leading to offices, I designed a wall with the words “Be the change YOU want to see.” The letter “O” in YOU is a mirror so the message is clear: Don’t look to somebody else to make changes. Look to yourself to start. I achieved my goals for their spaces: maintain functionality, create a progressive, branded first impression that paid homage to the past and looked to the future, and in looking to the future,

HOMEWORKS CONSTRUCTION

A customized rebuild nears completion H omeworks Construction’s “Kaimuki house in progress” is shown in the photos during phase two, which included roofing, windows and doors, electrical, plumbing, drywall and siding. Phase one — demolition of the existing house, concrete pour for the foundation and framing — was finished in January. Phase three — the completed home — will be covered in an April issue of Hawaii Renovation. Project manager Bruce Kunkel, who worked closely with the owners, said staying within budget influenced some of the choices. “Roofing is a high ticket item in any construction job and a wide range of materials and styles is available. Composition shingle is more affordable than tile or metal, but today, due to it being a petroleum product, it’s still a big cost factor. We used a light gray shingle to reflect heat away from the house and harmonize with the gray paint chosen for the siding, a vertical tongue and groove engineered wood which is termite-resistant, as is the framing lumber. “At the framing stage, I sat down with

Garage door safety knowledge can protect your whole family op quiz: What is likely the largest, heaviest moving object in your home? Here are a few hints: it provides security and protects against the elements. If insulated and newer, it will help your home conserve energy. And it allows you and your family convenient access to and from your home. Answer: It’s your garage door. But do you know how to operate and maintain your garage door safely? Do your kids know the potential hazards that a garage door may present? The Garage Door Safety Quiz, found at www.garagedoorcare.com, can help. “At only five questions long, the quiz will take you just a few minutes to complete,” said Chris Long, managing director of the International Door Association, a trade association comprised of more than 2,000 door and access system dealers and installers worldwide, which manages the website. “But knowing the answers to those five questions can help keep you and your family safe from potential garage door hazards.” Here are a few things to think about that will help build your knowledge of garage door safety:

P

• A moving garage door can pose a risk for injury, or even death • Children or adults should never stand, run, or play under or near any garage door — especially when the door is open or moving.

• It’s important that children realize that the garage door and its associated parts are not toys. Adults should not allow children access to the remote opener, and push button wall controls should be installed at least five feet off the ground. It’s particularly important that parents learn about children and garage door safety. A special learning tool on the website entitled “D.O.O.R. Safe” contains four brief messages to help parents teach young children the dos and don’ts of garage doors, such as:

installation, annual maintenance or repair of springs or cables should be performed by a trained service technician. To locate a qualified garage door professional, visit www.garagedoorcare.com

• Doors are heavy. Never stand, run or play under or near any garage door. • Openers are for adults. Never play with the button on the wall that opens and closes the garage door. • Ouch. Never touch any part of a moving garage door. Your fingers and hands can get hurt. • Remotes are for adults. Never play with the remote control in the car or on Mom and Dad’s keychain.

Installing or repairing a garage door may also be dangerous to even the most avid do-it-yourselfer. While there are many maintenance checks that you can perform yourself — like monthly tests that include visual inspections, door balance and a semi-annual lubrication — there are some tasks that are best left to a professional. For example, door

ADVANCED OVERHEAD STORAGE OF HAWAII LLC

Give these innovative storage solutions a try in your home A dvanced Overhead Storage of Hawaii introduces a new and cutting-edge storage alternative to assist home owners and businesses in gaining additional storage in their garage, carport or shop where valuable floor space is needed. A new product line to the Islands, these heavy-duty steel racks are hung from the ceiling and come in a variety of sizes to accommodate many storage needs. Storage applications are only limited by your imagination. Sizing options include 4 by 8 feet, 2 by 8 feet, 4 by 4 feet and a 4 by 4 feet mobile rack. They are powdercoated to inhibit rust and can hold up to 700 pounds of weight. The company’s most popular 4 by 8 feet rack creates 32 square feet of storage space. The racks can be suspended to accommodate any ceiling height and even stacked to provide a shelf-like storage option. The racks provide a wide variety of storage choices including, but not limited, to: storing sporting goods (surf boards, kayaks, boogie boards, baseball equipment, boating accessories) that are used frequently; holiday decorations needed once a year; or business supplies, creating more work and floor space. The popular mobile rack allows the homeowner to easily move heavy and bulky items from floor to ceiling. The rack can be hand cranked, or better yet, easily attached to a cordless drill to automatically lift/lower items. It can be used like a dumbwaiter for other storage racks or locked in place once raised for safe and secure storage by itself. DISCOUNT WINDOWS & DOORS

Explore cutting-edge windows made specifically for Hawaii H ow do you develop and design a perfect window for Hawaii? Prior to 2008, all windows sold in the state were designed and built on the Mainland and were less than ideal for use in the Islands. The Makai Range of windows, developed by Discount Windows & Doors, is the only window specifically designed for Hawaii. Existing vinyl frames frequently would yellow or become brittle with age; the thickness of the glass used was woefully inadequate for use in a hurricane zone; not one company utilized 100 percent stainless-steel hardware in their windows; the screens used were of poor design and didn’t last; and thermal efficiency was something used on a freezer — not a window. In 2008, all of that changed; using state of the art technology, Discount Windows & Doors developed a window system designed for the 21st Century and beyond — the company’s Makai series of windows and doors. They not only improved every facet of existing windows, but developed a window system never used in Hawaii before. Hawaii has some of the most extreme UV exposure on earth, capable of destroying all but the very best vinyl. Pure Virgin Vinyl, with its high percentage of titanium dioxide, is the only vinyl able to stand up to the harsh exposure of Hawaiian sunshine. Hawaii is in a hurricane zone — meaning, the state is likely to experience a direct hit from a hurricane in the near future. Most existing vinyl windows will be all but destroyed when that happens.

DISCOUNT WINDOWS & DOORS contact // 673-6656 web // www.discountwindowshawaii.com

The vinyl frame on the Makai window series is a highimpact profile able to withstand considerable impact without failing. To complement the strong frame, doublestrength glass is used, which is twice as thick as common glass used in the vast majority of replacement windows. The combination of these sturdy frames and double-strength glass enables these windows to endure winds of up to 180 miles per hour. In fact, all Makai windows are so strong that

they are commercially rated and are frequently used in high-rise condos. The majority of homes in Hawaii experience varying degrees of salt exposure. The combination of high humidity and salinity in the air, along with tropical temperatures, creates an extremely corrosive environment, which most people can attest to. The Makai range of windows and doors addresses this issue by utilizing the highest grade of stainless steel hardware available. Salt can also be problematic on glass, causing etching and constant staining. It also attracts moisture and dirt. By using Cardinal Neat Self Cleaning Glass, the problem is eliminated. Virtually all homes in Hawaii experience an area that is hot at some time of the day. The solution is using Cardinal 366 Low E, one of the most energy-efficient glasses available in North America today. By using a combination of Cardinal 366 Low E with Argon and Neat Self Cleaning Glass, more than 90 percent of heat can be reflected out of the home. Finally, screens are the first item to deteriorate in most windows because of their poor design. Discount Windows & Doors has developed a strong screen system that can be removed from inside the home and, in most cases, with one hand.

Expanding outdoor living space adds value to homes E ven during a challenging economy, the outdoor living trend remains popular as homeowners seek to add lasting value and functional living space under the sky and stars. Whether it’s a do-it-yourself patio or a professionally installed outdoor kitchen, the beauty, usefulness, value and ease of maintenance in outdoor living space is limitless. Extending living space outdoors is as old as time itself. “Creating an outdoor room is a natural extension of your indoor living space,” said landscape architect John Johnson. “By creating a space in the open air and adding elements like fireplaces, pergolas, water features and greenery, you get a very different feel. People want and need that connection to the outdoors.” Adding value Without erecting the traditional four walls and roof, outdoor living space can be easily added to large, small, twin or town homes. Enhancing an outdoor space with hardscapes adds value and can be adapted for multiple uses. “Homeowners continue to embrace the trend of maximizing outdoor living space, whether it’s an outdoor kitchen or patio living room with a fire pit,” said Lonny Sekeres, a landscape designer with Villa Landscapes. “Real estate experts say that for every dollar you invest in landscaping projects, you could see up to a $2 return when you sell your home.”

natural extension for family and entertaining guests,” Sekeres said.

Do-it-yourselfers will find easy-to-install, maintenancefree pavers and segmental retaining wall systems are budget-friendly for patios, walkways, courtyards, raised gardens, fire features and wall projects. New construction should include plans for exterior hardscapes, and remodels can benefit from the advice of design-build professionals or experts from a landscape supplies retailer, says Sekeres. Al fresco living A popular trend is to expand kitchen space with outdoor grilling areas, stone fireplaces for cooking wood-fired pizza, or stone counters around a grill for food preparation. “It’s a

Living accents A newer trend is the green or living wall, said Sekeres. Products like the VERSA-Green Plantable Retaining Wall System from VERSA-LOK lets do-it-yourselfers and professional installers alike easily add drama and beauty to retaining walls. “A living wall planted with herbs near an outdoor grill or a landscaped wall of flowers is an eye-catching, ecofriendly and unique use of retaining walls,” said Sekeres.

Adding ambiance Lighting installed within steps and along paths can also add a unified ambiance to a home’s hardscape. Adding decor such as pergolas, trellises and arbors covered with natural materials like bamboo or fiber screens is great solutions for privacy, shade or continuity of design. Shush your flooring’s squeaks and creaks D o you ever feel like you’re tr ying to avoid tripping off an alarm as you carefully tiptoe through the living room? Except instead of an alarm, you’re hoping not to trigger that familiar creak or groan of the floorboards. It’s happened to everybody, and at times it wakes up the newborn (or anyone else who is asleep), interrupts homeoffice calls and lets everyone in the house know about your midnight snack run to the fridge. Sound familiar? If so, you probably assumed a squeaky floor was something you’d have to live with. Contrary to popular belief, however, a squeak in the floor is relatively easy to repair. One product that makes this home improvement so simple is Squeeeeek No More, a squeaky floor elimination kit that works on carpeted, vinyl and hardwood floors, and is available at Home Depot. It used to be that home improvement exper ts advised only going underneath a floor to fix a creaky floorboard. However, second floors cannot be repaired this way, due to the first-floor ceiling. Your grandparents probably advised using talcum powder, liquid wax or powdered soap between the floorboards of that hardwood floor to stop it from squeaking. With new products, all of these old-fashioned remedies can be forgotten. There is no need to lift up any carpet or floorboards and the task can be performed on 20 • MARCH 3, 2013

top of the flooring. All it takes is a power drill and the provided hardware from the kit. Squeaks occur when shrinks and gaps develop around different flooring elements. For example, in most creaky floors, a nail that was used to fasten the floor has become loose and a squeak happens as a result of the nail rubbing on the sub floor. It’s also possible that wooden planks have loosened from the joist below them and are rubbing against one another. For homeowners with carpeted floors, Squeeeeek No More uses a tool that will find the location of the floor joists from above the floor. After locating the

joists, an alignment and depth-control fixture allows you to drill through the carpet with one of the provided screws into the joist where the squeak exists. The screw will tighten the floor planks back onto the joist without ruining the floor or having to go underneath it. The alignment fixture has a screw gripper on one side that will snap off the screw head so there are no dangerous nails or screws sticking out of the carpet. Doing away with creaky floors can be a big aid when it comes time to sell a home. There is nothing more unattractive to prospective homebuyers than noisy squeaks and creaks coming from the

floor. By eliminating squeaks, you’ll be able to keep potential buyers’ attention focused on the

beauty of your home. For more information about Squeeeeek No More, call (800) 459-8428 or visit

New tests reveal issues in quality onsumers generally do not understand the issues that arise with photovoltaic (PV) modules and their construction. As a result, there has been a flood of modules that have come on the market claiming to be just as good as, or better, than other ones. Well-known names for other consumer products have also brought products onto the market and consumers assume that they must be good. The fact is they are not always good, and new extensive testing indicates that the problems tend to surface in around seven to eight years. The new testing is being done to prove the bankability of solar modules and manufacturers’ long-term warranty claims. Pacific Islands Construction wants to keep you informed, and the following is what these new tests are finding that indicate that not all modules are equal:

C

• New tests indicate that there is a problem called “snail trails.” The phenomenon is so called because of the appearance of dark trails on the modules’ surface causing hot spots and underperformance. More than 25 manufacturers have been found so far to have had this problem. The cause of it has not been fully determined, but likely factors include micro-cracks in cells, cheaper components, weaker frames and poor construction. • The tests have indicated that many mod-

Few modules are actually passing these new tests, and this information is being used by financial institutions who are investing in 20 year solar farm projects to protect their investments. The benefit to the consumer is they can also use this information to insure that their investment is a good one. • The tests are revealing that module construction breakdowns happen in seven to eight years. A serious problem appears to be that the adhesives used in the sandwich

construction of glass, cells and the backer breaks down, causing slippage of these components. The resulting problem is moisture entering the construction or electrical breakdown that can lead to electrical shocks or even fires. These new tests are gaining attention, calling for new industry standards that reflect what module manufacturers should be building and protecting us from substandard construction. As a result of heavy financial losses due to Chinese manufacturers flooding the market with low cost and lower quality products, manufacturers of solar modules are losing millions of dollars. these companies have lost as much as three quarters of their value. It has been said that there is likely to be only about 10 companies worldwide that will survive this market over the next five years with more than half of them being Chinese. Warranties are sales tools used by companies to convey the false idea that something is guaranteed when it is not. If the company goes out of business, you have no protection for product failure. Many warranties do not cover removal of defective modules or shipping. In the fine print, energy depreciation can also be more than the 20 percent that most manufacturers allude to. Some manufacturers allow up to 3 percent energy loss in the first year. Just remember that the manufacturers are writing these documents to protect themselves, not you. If you are interested in finding more about these new tests and are considering a PV system for your home, give Pacific Islands Construction a call at 841-7756. The company is more than just a solar contractor. As a roofing contractor, it understands how to properly seal roof penetrations, protecting your home from leaks and keeping your roof warranty in place. It guarantees your roof will not to leak from our installation for a period of seven years, the longest period the state allows a contractor to promise. Pacific Islands Construction tries to protect its customers from the issues faced by using only the best equipment and installation practices. This month, the company is offering specials on selective systems.

Easy ways to keep your lawn ‘green’ aintaining the perfect lawn is less difficult than you think and with the right tools, you can be both efficient with your yard work and eco-conscious. If it’s lush green turf that you’re after, but you also care about your carbon footprint, there are a few tools and practices that can help you have it both ways. Many of the tips for maintaining a truly green lawn can also save you money and time. As you’re gearing up to enjoy your outdoor space this season, here are a few suggestions to follow for a healthy lawn you can feel good about:

M

Give back to your lawn One of the best treatments for your yard is to let a layer of lawn clippings settle on the top of your turf after mowing. The clippings decompose and replenish your soil, encouraging positive growth. A common misconception is that leaving the clippings on top of your lawn leads to the development of thatch, when in fact it’s usually caused by other conditions. Leaving your clippings only helps your lawn, and lessens the amount of work you have to do. Get battery-powered mowers and lawn tools Gas mowers’ engines don’t run nearly

Be wise with your water With a few strategic adjustments, you can significantly reduce the amount of water you use to keep your lawn healthy. Water less frequently with a good soaking each time, the water you use will go further. Watering in the morning will also help your lawn soak up the water, rather than having it evaporate before it makes it into your soil. Installing a rain barrel is also a great way to reuse the water that runs off your house without ever having to turn on the spigot.

as clean as more thoroughly engineered car engines and contribute significantly to air pollution, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. If you make the switch to a battery-powered mower, you can start it easily every time without having to worry about polluting the air. With a mower like the GreenWorks Twin Force Mower, you can

Buy a discerning fertilizer Chemical fertilizers might offer quick results, but organic fertilizers often provide more staying power as they focus more on improving soil quality rather than the quick fix of applying nutrients directly to the plant. To make sure you are effective with your fertilizer use, take a soil sample to a local garden store to analyze it and they’ll recommend the best fertilizing mix for your lawn. Covering all bases for effortless entertaining W hether you’re a hosting aficionado or a novice entertainer, planning a party at home can carry a certain level of stress. Sometimes, despite all the cleaning, cooking and decorating we do to prepare, it’s the easily overlooked little things that can cause the biggest unwelcome surprises. The No. 1 disaster experienced by party guests and hosts is a malfunctioning toilet, according to a recent survey conducted by Delta Faucet Company. Interestingly, most respondents did not pay attention to their toilet when preparing for a party. Running, leaking or regularly clogged toilets are tempting to ignore, however it’s during parties when bathrooms are in constant use that problems can easily arise. Chip Wade, expert craftsman and host of HGTV’s hit new show “Elbow Room, recently partnered with Delta Faucet Company to encourage homeowners to get ahead of the problem by addressing toilet troubles before planning an event. “Chip knows that hosts aren’t the only ones who feel the stress of a party —

homes get stressed, too, said Susan Peters, senior retail brand manager at Delta Faucet Company. “Our goal is to help educate homeowners about bathroom maintenance. Even just a few extra people in the house require plumbing fixtures to work overtime to accommodate more flushes, resulting in greater potential for something to go wrong if you already have toilet issues. Tip No. 1: Luckily, despite the fear many of us have when it comes to actually replacing a malfunctioning toilet, resolving the issue is a relatively easy and inexpensive fix. The Corrente toilet from Delta Faucet is a high-performing, water-efficient solution that comes with all the tools necessary for easy installation. The Delta Corrente toilet kit includes the tank, bowl, toilet seat, mounting hardware and wax ring, as well as a SmartFit Multi-Tool. Additionally, the EZ Out Toilet Removal Kit provides many of the items needed for uninstalling an existing toilet. Tip No. 2: Wade also suggested enlisting the help of a friend to point out other areas of the home that may need to be

addressed. Entertaining should be fun and exciting, not a burden. No matter where you are or what you are celebrating, remember to cover all your bases when

preparing for an event at home. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

COOL ROOF STORE

Learn to care for your roof Expert tips, low prices await you at ‘Big One Day Sale and Demo’

on’t miss the Cool Roof Store’s Big One Day Sale and Demo this Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public will have a chance to learn first-hand about one of the biggest revolutions in home improvement today. Even better, the lowest prices of the year on all major coatings — GacoRoof Silicone, Hawaiian Sunguard, Cool Roof Store Ceramic, and NXT Cool Zone for Monier tile — are always reserved for the One Day Sale and Demo. Attend the hands-on demonstration on how to install Cool Roof coatings that can extend the life of your roof for as long as your structure lasts. Why tear off your old roof every 10 to 15 years and then pay to have it hauled to the dump? Recent advances in silicone- and ceramic-based coatings make the application easy and much less expensive than traditional reroofing. The GacoRoof Silicone coating comes with a manufacturer’s 50-year material warranty — even if you have continual ponding water. You’ll never have to re-roof again. Plenty of free parking is available on the street, but come early to grab a good seat as these events are always well-attended. Jim Wilkinson of GacoRoof will lead a hands-on demonstration explaining some of the secrets on how to best roll out your silicone roof. He will demonstrate different “tricks of the trade,” depending on whether you have an asphalt, metal or shingle roof. If you have pictures and a

measurement of your roof size, bring it with you to the seminar so the Cool Roof Store (CRS) folks can show you how much coating you would need for your roof. Or,

the CRS experts can measure your roof on Google Earth for a quick estimate. Whether you want to do it yourself or have a roofer do it, you will want to attend this one day sale and seminar. Be prepared to make a purchase that day as the biggest discounts of the year are always at the One Day Sale for attendees only — for both product sales as well as professional installation. Homeowners with Monier tile, shingle or metal roofs will want to hear about the amazing NXT Cool Zone coating that reflects between 30 and 91 percent of the sun’s heat, depending on the color. Even the darkest colors, like charcoal gray, resist fading and cracking because of their cross linking polymer chemistry and nanotechnology. Their effectiveness has been proven for 42 years in Australia’s extreme heat with more than 800,000 roofs worldwide. This is unlike any other roof paint you

have ever seen. Make your old Monier and shingle roofs look like new — and cool down your home at the same time. If you want to coat your asphalt shingle roof, you will want to attend the ceramic coating seminar. Asphalt shingles can be easily coated so that you never have to re-roof again. You can also choose any color you want to blend into your neighborhood. However, there are specific techniques you need to know when you deal with asphalt shingles. It is important to seal up all the “keyways” before you put on your final coat. Learn the difference between shingle types and coating requirements. Bring pictures of your roof for the experts to examine. Hawaiian Sunguard, Apoc and Cool Roof Store ceramic coatings will be on sale that day. Visit The Cool Roof Store at 575 Cooke St. in Kakaako. Go to www.coolroofstore.net for web specials and video tips. For a free home estimate, call 591-1900.
