JOANNE ROMERO

Tips for Extending the Life of Your Garbage Disposal

t’s confession time: For about three weeks last month, every time I used my garbage disposal, it leaked water under the sink. Instead of tackling the problem right away, I went for the avoidance strategy. I stuck a vase under the disposal and emptied it periodically. When I forgot to empty it, the sound of water spilling over the vase served as a quick reminder. In my defense, I knew I needed a new disposal, and I didn’t have the time to deal with the problem right away. How did I know? When I had some work done last year, my plumber noticed the disposal was quite old and on its last legs. He warned me it would go soon. The disposal was about five years old, but it was not a “nice” one. In fact, this model only had a one-year warranty, so making it five years wasn’t half-

• Avoid fibrous foods. The fibers can tangle and cause blockages. Things like celery, artichokes, onionskins and banana peels are better left for a compost pile. Ditto for starchy foods, like potato peels, which can turn into a paste and clog the drain.

I

bad. With the new garbage disposal, I’m determined to make it last well beyond its warranty. Here are some tips to prolonging its life span. • Keep it cold. Use cold water when running the disposal. Hot water can melt fat, which can eventually solidify down the pipe and clog your drains.

• Throw in the ice. Put ice down the disposal periodically and run it as you normally would . The ice helps to clear the disposal of food debris. For an added boost of clean, make ice cubes from citrus juice. • Run the water. After turning off your disposal, let the water run for 30 to 60 seconds. This will help to clear the drain of food particles. • Grind immediately. Standing food may

contain acid or oils that can eat through seals. Run the disposal right away and don’t forget to use cold water and let it run after.

According to appliance.net, the average life span of a garbage disposal is 10 to 12 years. Of course, this life span fluctuates with the disposal you choose. Check the warranties to see projected life spans. This will give you insight as to whether you should repair a leak or buy a new disposal. As always, consult a professional if you are ever in doubt.

RISOURCE ENERGY

HR COVER STORY FEBRUARY 17 • 2013 3

Risource takes risk, makes history BY MELANIE MEI

e-branding is considered a risky move for any business to make. So, why rebrand an already successful PV company and risk failure? Especially when you’re already at the top of your game? Risource Energy president Darren Furumoto has heard this question a lot lately. Until May 2012, he was the head of operations at Alternate Energy — one of the most successful solar companies in Hawaii. After an enlightening trip to Japan and many years spent following Copper-IndiumSelenium (CIS) technological growth by Solar Frontier (SF), Furumoto seized the opportunity to become the first in Hawaii, and America, to integrate SF’s CIS panels into residential installations. He’s always on the hunt for ideal, self-sustainable solutions and has found such a solution in Solar Frontier’s CIS panels. Risource Energy has taken bold steps toward shaping the photovoltaic (PV) industry’s future in Hawaii by introducing 2nd generation, all-black, Japanese-made CIS panels in a market congested by crystalline. CIS is proven worldwide to harvest 9 percent more energy from the sun than crystalline. The company dream is simple — to be an “ideal choice in self-sustainability.” While having a dream is important, it definitely doesn’t guarantee success. Having the right product and the man power to make it happen are key, and that’s where three unique individuals come in. Darren Furumoto, Charles Lum and Dean Wakatsuki, the photovoltaic specialists of Risource Energy, explain CIS technology:

R

Q: What is your educated opinion on second generation CIS panels vs. other panels on the market? A: (Charles) I’ve worked on thousands of installations using crystalline. After working with Solar Frontier’s CIS panels, there was no going back to crystalline, especially after seeing the remarkable performance results. CIS modules by Solar frontier are the best. Hawaii deserves access to these panels. Q. Why are Risource Energy PV systems so effective? A: (Dean) In my 10 years as a PV tech, I learned the most common issue with PV systems is “inverter failure.” Our design philosophy of centralized inverters (SMA/Power 1) paired with Solar Frontier CIS panels allows

us to overcome this. In the event that our inverters do break, they’re easily replaced. We don’t even have to go on the roof! Q: Why risk re-branding Risource? A: (Darren) Starting over was a tough but necessary move. When two of the most seasoned installers I’d worked with (Charles and Dean), asked to help found Risource Energy, I knew it was a well-calculated risk. Working with a quality product is rewarding and makes up for the challenge of re-branding a company. Without a strong team in place, I wouldn’t have had as much confidence starting over. Besides a quality system, service is a priority for most customers when choosing a PV company.

The following is a testimonial from customer Linda Kaakimaka: I got estimates from many reputable PV companies, but liked the appearance of the CIS panels. My main concern was that it was a relatively new panel. After much research, feedback and the 10-year Risource Energy service warranty — on top of the 25 year Solar Frontier warranty — I felt comfortable choosing Risource. I now save $600-700 per month, even in winter! I account much of that to the light-soaking technology of CIS. I never wait long for a call back from Charles; he’s fantastic and very patient, answering all questions in a timely manner. The production of energy has been even better than we expected.

The blend of knowledge, hard work and CIS technology is likely what’s led this company to become the “No. 1 leading authorized integrator of Solar Frontier CIS modules in Hawaii and America.” Risource Energy is growing quickly and enjoying steady success as a PV company. Being a pioneer of the CIS market is not an easy endeavor, but the Risource Energy team has accepted the challenge with a smile. Can you handle the risk of harvesting the most energy per watt possible? Make energysaving history with Risource Energy and CIS panels! Dean Wakatsuki (left) and Charles Lum.

AMERICAN CARPET ONE

Doing it right the first time BY KYLE GALDEIRA ith a host of certified flooring installers at its disposal, American Carpet One offers customers a means of meeting the highest industry standards while providing the best installation quality and service available. Certified Floorcovering Installers (CFI) is an international non-profit organization established in the early 1990s to train and certify installers with the end goal of ensuring that the installers working on homeowners and other customers’ projects are indeed qualified. Larry Marvel, installation manager at American Carpet One, explained that installers working at the company need to pass both written and performance tests in order to gain CFI certification, and must display honesty and integrity. All journeymen carpet installers at American Carpet One were recently certified by CFI — a first for the industry in Hawaii. They joined a select group of more than 40,000 CFI installers nationwide that are certified to install many products and floor coverings to meet industry standards. These installers are identified by the CFI seals on both their uniforms and work vehicles. “They set the standards, they tell us what carpet is specified for certain jobs, said Marvel. “How those types of carpet should be installed, how the seams should be sealed. Basically, they tell us from start to finish how the job should be completed while meeting industry standards. It’s a lot more than just putting rug on a floor. Marvel explained that American Carpet One’s certified

AMERICAN CARPET ONE contact // 447-2751 web // www.AmericanCarpetOne.com installers are skilled in a wide range of different installation methods. Tack-down installation occurs when the carpet is set down against two walls and power-stretched across the carpet pad to the two remaining walls. The carpet must be stretched properly to avoid wrinkles and to promote even wear across the surface according to the type and thickness of cushion utilized underneath. With a glue-down installation, the carpet is attached directly to a surface using an adhesive that is applied to the carpet backing. Marvel noted that this type of installation is preferred in commercial settings, as the carpet tends to receive 35 percent more wear in high-traffic areas. “In both types of installations, its about understanding how to do a proper layout, where to place the seams correctly and align the direction of the naps, how the carpet turns to the walls; all these parts play key roles in a good carpet installation, said Marvel, who has been involved in the carpet installation industry for nearly 40 years. “For all types of installation, whether tack down or glue down, the industry sets a standard, and our installers have to meet or exceed those standards to the customer’s satisfaction. Dealing with covering stairways or rooms that aren’t

square or present interesting angles are just some of the difficult situations that certified installers deal with on a regular basis. The CFI installers have access to a vast network of colleagues within the association that can offer advice based on practical experience. “These installers have to be experts in seam construction, power stretching, trimming, pattern alignment and a lot of other skills that it takes to install carpet in a customer’s home, Marvel said. “A customer using a CFI installer can be assured that they’ve already been approved and tested by their peers in the trade, and that the installation in their home or business is done right the first time.

DEEP PURPLE PAINTING

A stroke of genius BY KYLE GALDEIRA uality and integrity are the top priorities for Jimmy Suh when it comes to assisting customers with a wide range of painting projects. “I’ve been painting for 25 years, and my main goal is to produce a quality job — that’s the most important thing,” said Suh, owner of Deep Purple Painting. In early 2010, Suh moved to Hawaii to be closer to family and friends, and brought his successful painting business with him to the Islands. The contractor spent nearly 20 years in San Francisco building his business and cultivating a sterling reputation for producing quality results. Whether the job involves painting a home’s exterior, or a few walls of a commercial space, Deep Purple Painting has it covered. Prior to each job, Suh confers with the owner to determine the necessary steps involved in refinishing the desired surfaces. The painter and his experienced crew consider many factors, including the relationships between colors and how they compliment one another, and present the owner with the viable options. Other aspects that Suh considers include the texture of certain surfaces and what variety of

Q

paint will coat them in a way that protects and beautifies for years to come. Suh has cultivated a host of positive referrals from satisfied customers — a direct result of his respect for his clients and their needs. When meeting with Suh, customers are encouraged to view the completed jobs in person to fully understand the stellar workmanship that goes into every Deep Purple project. After the look and feel of the project is determined, the client is presented with a written estimate of both the cost of the job as well as a timeline detailing the work to be performed. “The word-of-mouth referrals that I receive come from the extensive preparation and excellent results from numerous jobs, both residential and commercial,” said Suh of many notable projects in both Hawaii and San Francisco. “That’s why people like how I do business.” Suh has honed his craft for over a quarter century, and can quickly diagnose problems with paint jobs that have resulted in unsightly chipping and peeling. Suh explained that the tedious tasks of priming and smoothing surfaces and filling in any cracks or imperfections with quality patching materials go a long way in ensuring a

How to add value, curb appeal to your home H omeowners have known for years that remodeling a kitchen or bathroom can recoup as much or more than the cost of the job. Recent studies in Honolulu have shown that replacing an old, worn garage door can recoup the homeowner 120 to 180 percent of the job cost, depending on the quality and features of the garage door. This is because of the enhanced curb appeal of properties with an attractive, new garage door. The garage door is the largest moving part of the house and for most properties, it is the first or second part of the house one sees from the street. Garage doors are available in galvanized steel, vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Most doors are available one-sided, insulated and two-sided with insulation. Even a modest, new one-sided garage door will allow homeowners to recoup more than the door

BIA-HAWAII

‘Owner Builder’ facts BY KAREN NAKAMURA RS-444 is the state law that regulates contractor licensing. This law is meant to protect consumers from liability, fraud and workmanship that does not meet building codes and building standards. Licensed contractors are registered with the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, (DCCA). The state has their names, addresses, social security numbers or fein numbers and it can find them to get restitution. The Owner Builder Exemption fosters unlicensed individuals to shift liability on to the owner without the owner knowing the consequences. Complaints have been filed with Regulated Industries and Complaints Office (RICO), and in many cases it takes years of investigation to substantiate the cases. The result: Owners cannot get restitution for their losses and are left with a situation that devalues their investment. Yes, we are all “related” in Hawaii or someone we know works in the construction industry. Yes, building costs in Hawaii are the highest in the nation. Is the risk worth taking when the values of our homes exceed $625,000? Is the risk worth it when the new building materials and building systems require specialized training? Is the risk worth taking when your net worth and lives are impacted? Owners, please educate yourself before signing the Owner Builder building permit application. When you sign this permit application, you are the contractor on record and you are liable for the safety of all workers

H

as well as compliance to the environmental (EPA) and (OSHA) regulations. Violations of federal regulations, (EPA and OSHA) are not excusable and the daily fines and penalties are expensive. The buck stops with you. The Owner Builder Exemption of the Contractor’s Licensing Law allows owners or lessees of property to build or improve residential, farm, industrial or commercial buildings or structures on property for their own use, or for use by their grandparents, parents, siblings or children, and who do not offer the buildings or structures for sale or lease. When owners are advised by individuals to sign the Owner Builder permit application, the owner can hire employees and contract directly with subcontractors to construct the improvements on their property. The owner then takes on all the responsibilities and the liabilities of a general contractor. Do not be confused:The Contractor Licensing Law HRS-444 is regulated by RICO. RICO assists the public and

licensees through education and through enforcement of the state’s professional licensing laws. Building permits are regulated by the City and County Department of Planning and Permitting, (DPP). A building permit is not required for repairs using similar or same materials for the purpose of maintenance and which are not more than $1,000 in valuation in any 12-month period and do not affect any electrical or plumbing installations. The Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA-Hawaii) has introduced SB-1077 to improve the ability of RICO to investigate violations of the Owner Builder Exemptions and to offer additional disclosures for owner builders when they enter into agreements with licensed subcontractors. Call or email your legislator to support SB-1077. For more information contact me at ktn@biahawaii.org.

HAWAII CENTRAL FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

Credit Union lends a helping hand urchasing a photovoltaic (PV) system is a huge investment, but state and federal tax credits are available that can make it affordable. However, even with these tax benefits, other financial assistance may be needed. Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union (HCFCU) recently introduced a new solar photovoltaic loan special to make it easier for homeowners to go green and save. Here is what makes HCFCU’s PV loan different from the other PV loans out there:

With no payments for six months, you can enjoy the benefits of your new PV system immediately.

Expand Your View Is your home losing its energy? Start by incorporating mirrors into your decor to reflect the positive and support your plans for growth

• To visually expand the foyer, place a mirror at the entrance, preferably on one of the sidewalls. When placing a mirror on a wall that directly faces the front door, pay special attention to what it reflects. It should reflect something pleasant, such as trees and flowers, not your messy neighbors across the street.

with

Alice Inoue QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Now that all the excitement of the new year is over, I want to move forward on some of the expansion and improvement plans for my life (too many areas to mention) before the year slips away again. Do you have any advice on how I can use my home to support this? I’m also interested in any other guidance you may have.

• Do you have space to hang a mirror in your living or dining area? If so, creating a visual expansion of space here is excellent, especially if it reflects the outdoors, bringing in unrestrained “growth energy.”

love your enthusiasm in wanting to take action to improve your life. Our environment can easily support changes that involve growth or “upleveling.” Below are some tips to help you prepare for the expansion you want to create and on the use of mirrors to support your growth.

• If you have narrow and cramped spaces in your home, such as tight corners and narrow passageways, hang a mirror there to “open” the energy for expansion. Note: Make sure the mirrors you hang do not reflect toilet doors (drain of energy), sharp edges and corners (cutting energy), bills (unwanted expenses), or old newspapers (the past). Mirrors should reflect only things you want to enhance.

I

Locate areas of energy drain Any time you choose to make a change to expand or grow in some way, take a look at where you are currently “losing” energy so that you can “plug the leakage” and regain energy and momentum to move in the direction you want. Whether the changes you want to make involve eating healthier and exercising more, starting a new business, having more private time, being more productive, making more money, or finding a mate, you require energy to sustain the new expansion. If you are maxed out in your life, creating the “bigger and better” life improvements will be difficult.

Start with the basics When it comes to making your life bigger and bolder, beginning with basics can mean the difference between success and failure. For instance, without plugging your personal energy leaks, you can become utterly drained and abandon your plans.

Step 1: Identify your energy drains. Where are you uninspired in your life? To whom can you not say no? Where are you taking responsibility for others’ obligations? What are you wasting your time on? What

Types of mirrors to put up Use your common sense to determine the size of the mirror, and make sure it is not too big or too small for the wall. Framed mirrors and ornamental mirrors are great choices and allow you to pick a style that matches your basic décor. To keep the bedroom energy calmer and more conducive to sleep, avoid adding mirrors in that environment and avoid cracked and tile mirrors as they create distorted reflections.

can you delegate? What can you let go of? Step 2: After identifying your energy drains, determine workable solutions. As long as it returns more energy to you, no change is too small to make. When actually making the change is challenging for you, keep reminding yourself of the bigger picture — that you want to expand, and need more energy to do that. In this step, commit to three things you will change, do them and ask a good friend to hold you accountable. Step 3: Now, begin setting up your home to support your expansion by using strategically placed mirrors! The use of mirrors Human beings have been using mirrors for protection or reflection for centuries. In feng shui, a mirror brings in energy of the element of water (flow) and helps to expand the envi-

ronment while drawing in beneficial energy. Once you have successfully identified where you need to make changes in your life and are committed to them, use the feng shui guidelines below to create flow and support and enhance your newly directed energy. If you make no personal changes but add mirrors, you will simply create more of the same because mirrors double the energy they reflect. With that thought in mind, always place your mirrors so that they reflect something positive.

From time to time check to see where you are losing your energy. Whenever you feel tired or feel you are building resentment, put more attention on yourself and your needs.

on your home’s new look, let these trends of the year be your design guide: In the kitchen

Kitchens need to be functional, but in this hub of the home, style is just as important. Upholding practicality while adding visual interest is a top trend this season. Two-toned upper and lower cabinet colors are rapidly growing in popularity as a way to let homeowners customize their kitchen spaces and express their personalities. • Maple is the style frontrunner when it comes to wooden cabinets, but painted cabinets in white, black and gray tones are also on the rise. Whether you opt to replace your cabinet fronts or paint them, your efforts will give you impressive — and fast — results. • On the functionality front, innovative hands-free faucets simplify cooking and cleaning tasks while requiring minimal effort to install. • Open shelving is seeing a boost in popularity. Paint your way to a stylish look

W

hen it comes to low-effort, big-impact changes, it’s hard to beat a fresh coat of paint. For walls that feel drab, boring or outdated, new paint makes a color statement and draws attention to architectural details. Follow these paint tips to make an instant, dramatic impression:

• Tiling provides the perfect solution to add extra personality to your bath. Right now, trends offer two different but equally chic directions — large-scale tile and small-scale mosaics. Tiles with wood-like appearances are also gaining popularity; they create a warm, inviting look, but offer the wet-space practicality of tile. If it’s your first time tiling, home improvement experts at stores like Lowe’s can provide guidance to get started with your tile flooring.

• You can alter the dimensions of a space by painting ceilings a slightly

lighter color than the walls.

• Create patterns and shapes using painter’s tape. Stripes, chevrons and ombre effects are perfectly on-trend. • Highlight architectural details by painting interior doors and trim in a colorful hue instead of traditional white. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

CATHY LEE

The Right Rug By decorating from the ground up, you can match just about any rug with furniture

ecently, we’ve gotten a bunch of new and consigned rugs into Cathy’s Marketplace, so I thought I’d put you to the test. You know I love to start decorating with an area rug because it can ground a space, set the direction for colors and even the decorating style. Now let’s see how well you’ve been paying attention! First, let’s describe the rugs:

R

• Champagne-colored fettuccine rug with long, loose, silky strands. It’s your modern, uber-glam shag. • Traditional Persian wool-and-silk rug with a red base and a pattern of creams, golds, greens and browns. • Modern island-style rug with a geometric pattern of two-tone green squares mimicking a lauhala-like weave. • Scratchy, natural-fiber, sandy-colored sisal rug.

Now, let’s describe our living room setting. Our furniture arrangement has two modern wood-and-leather chairs in chocolate brown, a rectangular glass coffee table with an oil-rubbed bronze frame, and a clean-lined, fully upholstered beige sofa with wooden feet. So, which area rug would work with this grouping? The answer is all of them! Yes, although all of these rugs are different in style, some accessories, throw pillows and other touches can make this furniture work on almost any rug. Why would this grouping work with a silky champagne rug? Because both furniture and rug are modern in style. All the pieces are basic in nature, so the fettuccine rug can be the star. But to give the grouping more of a glam feel to match the rug, you can add in some bling. Crystal candlesticks on the coffee 14 • FEBRUARY 17, 2013

table, a crystal floor lamp, furry throw pillows and glass and silver accents will make this grouping shine and tie in perfectly with this rug. Next is the traditional Persian rug. This furniture is not quite elaborate enough for the rug, so to make it work, we need to heighten the formality. Try lots of throw pillows with saturated jewel colors. A beautiful throw would enhance the plush feel. With lighting fixtures, go for elaborate styles and gold finishes. And don’t forget some ornate, traditional accents for the coffee table: candlesticks made of wood, painted metal or gold. Better yet, add some books under the candlesticks. And opt for heavier drapery. Now, for the geometric pattern rug: The simple, clean lines of this furniture grouping

weight, so you’d want to bring in more casual elements. How? With pillows and lamps that have linen or other natural fibers, natural-looking window treatments, and no heavy throws or pieces. The key here would be to bring in more casual, earthy elements so the space doesn’t feel too formal for the rug. Playful touches would work well. So as you can see, you can make just about anything work. I started with a furniture grouping that was pretty basic. Consider the style of your rug and the space you’re trying to create, add from the ground up, and stay on your toes — you never know when I’ll quiz you again! work perfectly with this rug.You don’t need much more. To stay within this style, you want to keep your accessories fairly simple. Adding some throw pillows in deeper greens, browns or even grays would make this setting seem subtly rich and dramatic. Clean-lined lighting fixtures and almost any drapery panel with no fuss would work. Finally, the sisal rug would be a casual grounding piece for our furniture. Leather and upholstery could be too heavy in visual

ELITE DESIGN GROUP LLC

Setting your sights on cabinetry BY SARAH PACHECO Before purchasing a new set of cabinets for your new kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, there are some important things you should consider. First, keep in mind that cabinets account for 40 to 50 percent of the total cost of your kitchen or bathroom remodel, so setting your total budget figure will be one of the first things you’ll need to do. Are stock cabinets for you? Stock cabinets are the least expensive option and are constructed in standard shapes and sizes; however, they are available in a limited number of woods or finishes and offer few style options beyond basic drawers and cupboards. If you plan on living in your home for only a short time or are working with a tight budget, stock cabinets are your best bet. But if this is going to be the kitchen or bath of your dreams, you should look for topquality construction and materials found with semi-custom and custom cabinets. Versatility of semi-custom Semi-custom cabinets are factory-built in standard sizes with many options for

ELITE DESIGN GROUP LLC contact // 847-3888 address // 570 A Dillingham Blvd. web // www.edghi.com storage, design and style. The high end of cabinet construction is custom cabinets, which are constructed in either a workroom to designer specifications or on-site in any style and finish you choose. Semi-custom and custom cabinets provide endless solutions to your storage needs: pullout shelves for pots and pans; a lazy Susan for spices; a wine rack; vertical dividers for trays and cookie sheets; even an appliance garage or pullout bins are all just some of the standard add-ons available when ordering these higher-end cabinets. And if your space is too narrow for a cabinet and counter, a tall pantry closet provides lots of space for pots and pans in the kitchen or towels in the bath. Make quality your first choice No matter what type of cabinet you select, all cabinets should have solid frames, door and drawer fronts, reinforced corners

and closed backs, and the finish on the wood should be smooth. Also, cabinet drawers and doors will be opened and closed many times throughout the day, so they should operate smoothly and quietly each time. Cabinets help establish a mood Finally, remember that the cabinets you select will set the tone of your new kitchen or bathroom and play a major role in transforming your space.

LET THE SUN WORK FOR YOU!

Browse magazines and stores to get an idea for what suits you. Look for styles that blend well with the architecture of your home as well as the interior design of other rooms. But don’t get bogged down by all of these decisions. TOWN & COUNTRY BUILDERS LLC

Quality construction that translates to longevity H ave you ever wondered why things breakdown so quickly? Don’t think that by throwing a concrete foundation block down on the ground, you can construct an addition that will be capable of withstanding the movements, loads and stresses that are prevalent in Hawaii’s soil conditions. On top of it all, adobe soil is expanding and contracting at a rapid rate when rain falls on it. It is acting like a cellulose sponge. It’s no wonder so many homes in Hawaii have drywall cracks and shifting foundations because the basic steps were ignored at the beginning, and during, the construction process. The existing dirt at the location of the addition may consist of silt or may have been backfilled with broken cement blocks and rocks. This is hardly an acceptable starting point to building with quality. Footing may need to be excavated

below grade to a 2 foot by 2 foot by 3 foot depth and at least a foot of structural base installed and compacted to 90 percent density for a starting point. A 2 foot by 2 foot concrete footing consisting of No. 4 rebar and 3,000 psi concrete would be a good application as a second step in the process. The point is that each building site is different and a soil analysis is helpful to the structural engineer in determining the correct design. Town & Country Builders LLC is offering a discount on the work and a savings of $1,000 off (some restrictions apply). You can save by calling the company today.

Save money by installing your own vinyl fencing I f you want the maintenance-free benefits of a vinyl fence but are intimidated by the price tag, you’re not alone. Many homeowners are initially surprised at the cost of a vinyl fence, particularly since the installation costs are generally as much as the materials. Recent trends show that more and more homeowners are saving money by installing their own vinyl fencing. In the past few years, the market has surged with DIY-friendly fencing products, making it much easier for a homeowner to install a vinyl fence without the use of specialized equipment. In the past, heavy auguring and cement mixing equipment was required to install a fence, making the project much more intimidating, time

consuming and dirty. The modern way is to install a vinyl fence post much like you would a chain link fence post — by driving a pipe anchor deep into the ground. After leveling the pipe, a vinyl post is sleeved over the top. The result is a level fence post installed without the labor-intensive process of digging a deep hole and pouring concrete to set the post. The no-dig way of installing vinyl fence has been used in Western Canada, where weather conditions are particularly harsh, for almost 20 years. In the past decade or so, it has also gained traction in the States as fencers and homeowners embrace the simpler installation method, particularly after the method passed

wind load tests withstanding the class 1 hurricane category winds of up to 75 mph. Along with the laborintensive and tedious installation method of digging holes and pouring concrete, fencing wasn’t previously sold with installation guides and other helpful resources. Fortunately this has changed with the DIY-friendly fencing products currently on the market. In a day when consumers everywhere are looking to save money, it’s refreshing to see that this is one home project that just got a lot easier for homeowners to tackle. Top-notch service continues to meet homeowners’ needs BY WENDELL GUIEB uality work, satisfaction and good prices are the priorities at my company, W.G. Construction LLC. I started contracting concrete in 1990. Our company does any amount of work, from small to big projects. We work with everything from flat grounds to the hardest areas of your project, and I still provide a reasonable price.

Q

I will make sure before starting the work that both parties understand the scope of work when installing a concrete slab. Also, I’ll make sure to explain what the contract price is. When installing a concrete slab, I will provide installation of base materials, correct compaction, installation of wire mess or rebar for reinforcement and pour the right pounds per square inch (psi) of concrete. What is impor-

tant about installing concrete is to follow the right procedure of finishing the concrete. I have worked with different general contractors as their sub-contractor doing concrete work for both commercial and residential projects. I have also built retaining walls for new homes and perimeter walls. We build to any area of your project. We include compaction, rebar, cmu blocks

and fully grout the area. We build new homes, renovations, additions, “jack up” homes or the smallest project in your home. We also do new or renovated commercial offices. As the owner, I fully supervise the project to make sure the job will go according to plan. My crew will always keep the job clean and safe. I play the role of quality control when building to make sure we only use quality materials. My goal is to make sure we finish the job on the committed time given to the customer. Quality work and satisfaction at the end of the project is important. We work with our clients by meeting with them first to discuss what type of home and design they want. If they don’t have any architect, we have some architects that we work with to design their home the way they want until they are satisfied with the design. Then we can also process the permit for our client. Most of our new clients are referred to us by our existing clients and that shows that they are satisfied of our work.

New Great Name, Same Great Company “HAWAII’S BEST FLOORING”

Let’s Talk Flooring Good Sunday Morning to you! This week I would like to talk about proper subfloor preparation and its importance in achieving a quality flooring installation. As licensed wood installation professionals, we follow the guidelines of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA). One of the first things you have to consider is level of moisture in the subfloor. The ASTM standard calcium chloride test should be conducted to determine the level of vapor emission from concrete subfloors. The “pounds per 1000 sf” number will indicate what needs to be done next. Another important issue to address before the floor goes down is the flatness of the floor. The NWFA recommends that he floor be flat to within 3/16” in 10 feet. We grind the highest spots and pour leveling compound in the lowest. To learn more, call HAWAII’S BEST FLOORING COMPANY or attend our next seminar. However, more often than not, our garages have turned into mismanaged and disorganized storage units that are conveniently located close to home. The fact is, most of us do not want to open the garage door because we do not want our neighbors to see how unsightly and disorganized we have allowed our garages to get. Do you need a garage remodel? Is your concrete riddled with oil stains, paint or cracking? Do your storage options look unappealing and function poorly? You are not alone; millions of homeowners have struggled with a problem they thought was unfixable, but it is. GOLDEN CABINETS & STONE

Where kitchens will come to life BY KYLE GALDEIRA ust in time for those pending building and remodeling projects, Golden Cabinets & Stone is offering a huge sale during which customers can take advantage of savings ranging from 40 to 50 percent off the entire stock of cabinetry and countertops. Golden Cabinets & Stone also offers multiple elements of customization, including 30- and 40-inch wall cabinets as well as the option of including glass panels as an added artistic element. Special orders are welcomed, and if customers provide the measurements for their desired cabinetry, Golden Cabinets & Stone can create a 3-D computer rendering of what the finished product will look like. “We have a big sale going on, and customers can save plenty of money,” owner Wayne Cao said. “We have big savings on everything in stock.” Cao also encouraged customers to stop in and check out Golden Cabinets & Stone’s new selection of porcelain tiles. Five varieties of the tile are available, and the covering resembles travertine — a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs. Golden Cabinets & Stone has gained a

reputation for offering quality, affordable cabinetry and countertops to meet the needs of Hawaii’s consumers for more than five years. Cao noticed how expensive it had become to purchase the products in Hawaii and sought to bring more affordable options to residents looking to either build from scratch or remodel existing spaces. Cao noted that Golden Cabinets & Stone is fully stocked with inventory, and “a wide range of choices” are available for customers shopping for everything from

cabinetry to hardware — including handles for an attractive yet functional touch. In addition to the vast array of options currently available, customers may consider two new cabinet styles and five new countertop varieties that arrived recently. “When we transform a client’s outdated kitchen into a new, more functional space, it is most satisfying seeing their face and hearing how much their whole family enjoys this new element in their home,” Cao said. “We’re licensed contractors, so we provide full service from

installation to painting.” Golden Cabinets & Stone operates out of a convenient central location to serve its customers that have come to appreciate the company’s professional customer service, quality products and “unbeatable” prices. With a 3,000-square-foot showroom at its Kalihi-Palama store located at 1299 Kaumualii St., Golden Cabinets & Stone offers a multitude of cabinetry in addition to 50 varieties of granite and quartz countertops, 30 choices of sinks and an array of high-quality porcelain floor tile varieties — a perfect combination when renovating a bathroom or kitchen. Other possibilities for utilizing cabinetry include modifying office areas, adding closets or sprucing up a garage or lanai with various storage elements. Golden Cabinets & Stone offers seven wood selections that are constructed from solid wood doors and plywood boxes, and provides customers with unsurpassed quality not available from competitors that offer particle or pressboard cabinetry. The company is continually introducing new cabinet styles along with countertop selections, which are in stock to aid home or business owners with completing projects as fast as possible.

ALUMINUM SHAKE ROOFING INC.

All you need to know about roof warranties P ermanent, aluminum Country Manor Shakes (CMS) look great on a roof just like cedar does, but without the drawbacks of wood. There’s also a manufacturer’s warranty covering 100 percent of the cost of material and labor (not prorated) for forty years or more. This is in case of the need for repairs because of unlikely system failure in winds of 120 mph, Hawaii’s salty atmosphere, flaking paint or other problems that might arise. Countless examples of half-century old roofs around Hawaii are a testament to aluminum’s suitability for use in our tropical marine environment. Temporary, conventional asphalt composition shingles haven’t changed much in the last 20 years, and they usually need to be replaced every 15 years. Ugly black streaks will appear in five years or less, but beware, the warranties are being extended. What modes of failure will trigger repair or replacement under the warranty, what costs will actually be covered by the manufacturer and for what period of time? If the specific roof failure is not covered in writing, it is not covered.

contact // 847-8885 email // fredrehm@hawaiiantel.net Know your expectations before you actually buy a roof. One of the ways to do this is to read the warranty. Most people think in terms of catastrophic failure such as severe windstorms, fire or baseballsized hail. But most failures occur from things like foot traffic or algae growth. Further, inadequate ventilation can void the warranty and lead to premature granule loss, blisters and curling. It is also important to know that time and simple exposure to sunlight, heat and moisture are the primary reasons a conventional roof degrades and fails. This is because the base material, asphalt, is highly flammable, but it’s combined with enough limestone quarry dust so that it won’t burn. The resulting material is hot, porous and will degrade quickly with exposure to

ultraviolet light. It is protected by adhering a layer of mineral granules to the surface, but it can absorb water from prolonged rain and develop surface blisters (not usually a warranty defect) when sunlight suddenly heats it up. High-tensile aluminum, the base material

ow that we are well into the new year, it’s time for home improvement projects. Call the experts at Tropical Wholesale if you are thinking of installing new windows and doors because the company is the first and oldest installer of vinyl window and door products in Hawaii. Sometimes it is hard to decide

which style or brand to choose, which products have the best warranty, which company will be there in 10 years to back up that warranty and which salesperson is telling the truth. Here are the answers to your questions as well as information about a company that will make your decision easy:

Tropical Wholesale is a local, licensed general contractor and has been installing windows for more than 30 years in Hawaii. The company will be here throughout the following 10 years. All its employees complete window-design training to ensure you will get the right window and door design for your home. Tropical Wholesale introduced the first vinyl window in Hawaii and it’s the first expert manufacturer of the product locally. The company has had more than 10,000 customers in Hawaii (on Oahu and the neighboring islands of Maui, Kauai, the Big Island and Lanai). Tropical Wholesale distributes Simonton windows and doors. Simonton is rated No. 1 by J.D. Power for customer and builder satisfaction. Simonton has the only lifetime warranty in Hawaii that covers all materials, labor, hardware and work-

manship. Read the fine print of other factory warranties: They tend to void Hawaii for warranties. Do not be fooled by a fast-talking salesperson. The company is an authorized service provider for Simonton windows and doors. Waiting for an expert’s decision from the Mainland is unnecessary. Tropical Wholesale can make that decision while providing the best service to every customer in Hawaii. Tropical Wholesale is 100 percent locally owned and operated with three generations serving Hawaii’s friends and neighbors. The company is a Sam’s Club contractor. To make an appointment or for more information, visit Sam’s Club online at www.samsclub.com. If it’s time to change those old jalousie windows, call the original experts: father and son owners Matt and Mike Houar of Tropical Wholesale. They will treat you like a friend. Call 263-1252 or 292-2942 and ask about the St. Louis and University of Hawaii alumni special.
