MIXING OLD AND NEW reating either a traditional design or a modern one is straightforward. Creating a space that marries the two styles can lead to a design divorce. If done incorrectly, the outcome can be awkward — but if done with care, the results can be truly amazing. I put this principle to work during a recent project for clients Anne and Jeff, who had a large groundfloor living room with a large problem. The room was packed with mismatched furniture and jarring

styles: chic sofas rubbed elbows with ornate chairs, modern artwork hung alongside antique paintings. Unsure how to make it all gel, Anne and Jeff asked if I could help them unify their old and new pieces and turn the discordant room into a harmonious space. The couple had a contemporary chocolate-brown sofa and loveseat they wanted to keep. So, I decided to start the process with those two pieces, bring in some of their antiques and make everything speak the same

ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME language with color and pattern. To this end, I selected a palette of bright colors (creams, greens, blues and yellows) and chose a variety of bold fabrics (linens, paisleys and weaves). My next task was to give some of the older pieces a new lease on life. I sent out an antique sofa and two cane chairs to be painted white and reupholstered — a blue/green woven fabric for the sofa and a funky paisley for the chairs. I also cut an old dining-room hutch in half and painted the bottom turquoise-blue — a color you wouldn’t normally see on such a traditional piece. I then organized the room into separate zones and brought in new furnishings. I created a reading area by the room’s glass doors, which I furnished with new shades in a distinctive arabesque pattern. I put the repurposed antique sofa against one wall and flanked it with two white bookcases. I also put in a new round wooden table, two white and Lucite chairs and hung a cool, globe pendant light above it all. Next to this, I created a lounge area with the brown sofa and loveseat. “Out, damned spot!” The well-quoted words, spoken by Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, could certainly be applied to the white spots on our shower doors, shower heads, shower faucets and sinks. I also put in accessories, like carvings, bowls, vases and pillows, to mix things up even further. Life is about appreciating the past while embracing the present, and the same can be said for good design. By mixing colors, patterns and styles, Anne and Jeff’s space went from eccentric to eclectic. It is now the perfect marriage of old and new — and I’ll toast that union any day of the week.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TERMITES

t’s that time of year again, when termites are swarming like crazy. It’s great living in Hawaii, but unfortunately we have to deal with termites. Hawaii has two major termite species that we normally see: West Indian drywood termites and the dreaded Formosan subterranean termite. Customers often ask how to tell which one they have infesting their home or commercial building. They also ask what they can do to prevent or at least minimize their chances of termite infestations. Many customers like the question-and-answer format of articles, so here we go:

How do I tell if I have Q: drywood termites or subterranean termites?

Drywood termites leave their fecal matter or droppings outside the wood in piles, and there also are droppings inside the damage. The damage is generally smooth looking and on the surface, unless the termites have been in the wood for many years. The subterranean termite damage is much more severe and has the presence of mud inside the damage. They also build mud tubes from the ground into the structure.

Can XT-2000 orange oil Q: be used to treat ground termites? No. Since it’s organic, it will not leave a long residual needed to treat ground termites. In the case of ground termites, we have to use a product that is designed for termites and will leave a long residual for maximum control.

What can I do to keep Q: termites out, or at least minimize my chances of infestation? Unfortunately, we cannot keep termites out permanently. There are many things to do to minimize chances of infestation, however. These include regular termite inspections, keeping attic vents covered with a screen, keeping lights down during the early evening swarming time and putting a pan of

water under lights that are on, so the light reflects into the water and the termites will be attracted to the reflection and fly into the pan of water and drown. Also, keep the slab around your home free of excessive moisture, and keep the slab visible to be able to see mud tubes coming up from the ground. TIPS FOR ERADICATING RODENTS AT HOME t is no secret that rodents are everywhere in Hawaii. Similar to most pest infestations, two of the biggest contributing factors to rodent control are sanitation and exclusion: giving them less food and water to consume, and keeping them from entering. Like other pests, rodents are seeking shelter, food and water. If you minimize access to these, rodents will have little interest in cohabitating with you.

Hawaiiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most notorious rodent to deal with is the roof rat, known worldwide for its acrobatic skills (capable of leaping several feet). Rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter, and mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime. They can enter through plumping vents, attic vents, underneath doors â&#x20AC;&#x201D; just about anywhere. Make sure these areas are screened and all the doors to your building maintain

a good seal. By keeping as many holes and gaps covered as possible, there are fewer ways for rodents to get in. Of course, keeping loading bay and exterior doors closed when not in use is a must. In addi-

tion, you should keep clutter to a minimum (inside your facility and out) to decrease the number of places where rodents can hide. Maintaining proper sanitation also will decrease your chances of a rodent infestation. Dripping water pipes and other sources of moisture are especially enticing to rodents. Rats need

about an ounce of water a day (a lot for a creature of its size!), so minimizing free water sources will go a long way in solving your rodent issues. Keeping tempting food sources properly stored in sealed containers, avoiding spillage and spreading debris on the floor also will limit the number of extra food sources for rodents. Of course, rodents are small and need less food than other creatures â&#x20AC;&#x201D; so be sure to be thorough! You also should consult an expert to help with your rodent issues. Q: How do termites infest a newer structure? Usually the termites are already in cabinets, closet sectionals or shelving units. Oftentimes the infestation is in the plywood used for framing or for shelving. We treat many new homes, businesses and condominium units for this type of infestation, and it’s normally drywood termites. It’s a much better alternative to fumigating a home, business or condo building.

Is XT-2000 orange oil treatment more expensive than a fumigation?

Sometimes, our cost is based on the size of the house and the amount of infestation. Keep in mind that when you factor in the cost to move out, discard food, hotel and meal expenses, security for the tented structure, the cost to board pets and any possible roof or plant damage, our cost is usually the same or lower.

Q:Do you warranty your treatments? Yes, our standard warranty for houses and commercial buildings is two years, and we call it a fullstructure warranty because we warranty not only the areas we treat, but the entire structure as well. We do annual inspections and after two years the warranty can be renewed annually without having to do the whole treatment over again. We have shorter and longer warranties available depending on the situation. For subterranean termites, we usually offer a five-year warranty.

Q:Is there a charge for an inspection? Generally no, but there are exceptions in cases where there’s an inspection for escrow and a report needs to be completed, or if we have to inspect a large multi-unit complex. We’ll let you know before any inspections are done.
