his is not going to sound very pretty, but here it goes: As you may tell from my picture, I have long hair. The average person loses 100 strands of hair per day, but I would venture to guess that I lose about five times that much. I find it on everything, and when I vacuum, there is more hair than dirt in the vacuum bag. But what’s even worse is when my hair clogs the tub drain. When I first moved into an apartment, every time I showered, the tub would fill with water. I plunged the drain, and that didn’t work. I tried every type of homemade and store-bought drain cleaner you could imagine. Finally, I called our maintenance man and he taught me a simple trick to unclog the drain. Remove the tub drain stopper. If the stopper is covered in hair, cleaning it may solve the problem. Cut the hair out using scissors from your tool kit. Please don’t use the kitchen scissors. Once you get the hairs out of the way, run the water to see if it goes down properly. If not, you may need to snake the drain. To do this, make sure to use a thin cable. You also want to be sure that you are using the right size and type of snake. Ask the people at a hardware store for assistance and tell them what you will be using the snake for and where you plan to use it. Once you’ve got the correct cable, remove the tub strainer and insert the snake into the drain line. Push until you reach the blockage. Twist the snake handle clockwise to hook the clog, pulling up slighting periodically to check if you’ve captured it. Push down with the snake until you break it up, turning the handle clockwise as you push. You will know you’ve broken it up when you can puncture through the other end. Pull the clog out slowly, and then dis-

pose of it in a bucket or trash can. Flush with cold water. Keep in mind that these are not permanent solutions to every clogged drain. I still have to clean the hair out of the drain stopper every now and then, but since learning these tricks I haven’t once had to use drain cleaner. As always, consult a professional if you’re ever in doubt. SERVING ALL YOUR ELECTRICAL NEEDS

hen it comes to servicing the roofing needs of Hawaii homeowners, R.S. Toyama Roofing Service Inc. has it covered. The company has been in business for more than 30 years and has gained an enviable reputation for providing quality craftsmanship at competitive prices. In fact, owner Raymond Toyama still does every free estimate himself, no matter where on Oahu the home may be. R.S. Toyama’s work encompasses residences, carports, lanai, sheds, extensions and, in some cases, commercial roofing. If you live in an area with an association, Toyama advised getting all your permits in order before beginning your project, as most associations will have a listing of color choices, materials, etc. that must be followed. “We can gladly bring out samples to make your selection,” Toyama said. With a crew of six highly skilled, hardworking young roofers, R.S. Toyama offers a seven-year workmanship warranty — the maximum allowed by Hawaii state law — on all its projects, in addition to the manufacturer’s material warranty, which usually lasts 20-30 years. “We want (our customers) to feel they can trust us to do the job required to the best of our abilities, and to do that job with the least amount of interruption of their normal lives,” said Toyama, who founded his company in 1979 after honing his skills in

With years of experience in the roofing trade, Toyama knows roofing can be a noisy and dusty process, so the company tries to keep clients informed not just for their benefit, but for their neighbors’ peace-ofmind as well.

Over the last several months, the company has witnessed a trend in homeowners opting to install PV (Photovoltaic-Solar Energy) systems on their roofs. These systems will last for 25 to 30 years, so be sure your roofing is in good condition before installing PV, as it will cost extra money and time to take down a solar system once you

have it mounted. Also, if you do decide to install a PV system and you need to re-roof your home, it can get costly. To save time and money, Toyama suggested re-roofing the portion that the PV system will be place on first. Then, if the condition of your roof permits, you can re-roof the rest of the residence at a later date. “No job is too small or large,” Toyama said. During this holiday season, R.S. Toyama would like to thank all of its current and past clients, some of whom have given the company much-appreciated repeat business over the years. “Thank you for your support throughout the years,” Toyama said. “We wish our clients and their families a safe and wonderful holiday season!” R.S. BIA HAWAII

Playing it safe this season BY KAREN NAKAMURA lanning for the holidays is a busy and joyful time. But all of the decorations, extra electrical cords and the parade of people going in and out of your home call for more safety precautions to help you make this holiday season safe and happy for you and your family. Here’s a checklist for home holiday safety: • Ask a friend or neighbor to watch your house and take in your newspaper and mail if you plan to spend the holidays away from home. Put lights throughout the house on timers to turn them on and off in your normal living pattern. • If you display a live Christmas tree or live greenery, select the freshest possible. A moist tree is less likely to catch fire. Look for a trunk sticky with sap and for green needles that bend and are secure on the branches. • When using a live Christmas tree, cut the base at a 45-degree angle. Place it in a container with water and always keep the water

P

level above the cut. • Place trees a safe distance from stoves, radiators, vents, fireplaces and any other heat source that may dry the tree. Inspect the tree for dryness daily. • Inspect all holiday light wiring. Defective, worn or frayed electrical wiring should be thrown away. Check for the UL label on lights. Also, be sure to use fixtures specifically designed for outdoor use if you decorate

your house, trees or yard. • Use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Also, don't run electrical cords under rugs. Be sure all lights are turned off before you go to bed or leave the house. • Place candles and other open flames away from decorations. Never leave burning candles unattended and always supervise children when burning candles. • Keep a fire extinguisher near your

LOCKE FAMILY, NIU VALLEY

APIO FAMILY, MAKAKILO

Christmas tree. Make sure your family has a fire emergency escape plan. In case of fire, leave your home and call for help from a neighbor’s home. • When buying artificial decorations, check for “flameproof ” or “fire-retardant” qualities. • Never burn wrapping paper in a fireplace or wood stove. Certain ink pigments react with heat and create airborne particulates that are dangerous to inhale. Also don’t burn evergreens, they could flare out of control and send flames and smoke into your house. • Cooking is a leading cause of home fires and home-fire injuries. When you cook, be sure to wear clothes that fit close to the body so they won't be ignited by hot burners. Do not leave items cooking on the stove and be sure that pot handles are turned in. The decorations around your house, lights, gifts, music and the presence of loved ones make the holiday season festive and fun, and with the proper precautions, safe. SUNETRIC

Rest easy with a clean energy solution BY JAIMIE KIM t’s no secret that Hawaii’s solar industry has been booming for the past few years, but homeowners and industry professionals have recently expressed concern over the sudden changes in state tax rules that will drastically reduce the amount of tax credits available for Hawaii homeowners. If you have been considering reducing your electric bill with solar, but are worried you’ve missed the state tax credit opportunities because of changes being implemented in 2013, don’t panic: Sunetric has a solution. “The department of taxation issued a new administrative ruling to change the definitions of the state tax incentives,” shared chief operating officer Aaron Kirk. The new qualifications to receive state tax credits are now based on kilowatts installed. This means you may not be entitled to receive as much in return from the state as you may have in 2012. “This can result in up to a 50 percent cut in tax credits from the state level, just by altering the definition,” said Kirk. “Sunetric feels that the tax change decision was made too quickly and without looking at the impact it’s going to have on the solar industry, on Hawaii’s clean energy initiative

I

SUNETRIC contact // 262-6600 web // sunetric.com or to Hawaii homeowners.” “This tax code change will dramatically affect the ease in which local homeowners can put solar on their homes,” said Kirk. Kirk predicts that there may not be any openings for installations before the end of the year, unless you want to turn to drastic measures and go with someone who can’t guarantee the same quality of service. But don’t be discouraged and lose faith in turning your roof into a personal power plant.

To continue to provide its reputable service to customers, and to assist homeowners that won’t be able to install photovoltaic before the end of the year, Sunetric has found exclusive means to cover the loss of tax rebates for homeowners. “We have access to an exclusive program that allows us to honor nearly all of the same tax credits that were available in 2012 for our new customers,” shared Kirk. “We’ve worked hard to find a way to give homeowners a little bit more time to get

in, and benefit from the better tax rebates that were available before this drastic cut was made.” However, Kirk noted that Sunetric will only be able to extend the 2012 tax credits for a limited time. “The resources of this program are limited and are allocated only to Sunetric customers. We are doing everything we can to extend it as long as possible and give as many local homeowners the benefits that these tax incentives provided before the rules changed,” said Kirk. And choosing to trust in Sunetric also means knowing that you’ll get more than your money’s worth with top-tier, U.S.-made photovoltaic panels. To ensure that you’ll be able to take part in Sunetric’s exclusive offer, visit sunetric.com or call the company’s main offices at 262-6600.

SERVCO RAYNOR OVERHEAD DOORS DECEMBER 16 • 2012 7

Open your garage door to new possibilities omeowners have known for years that remodeling a kitchen or bathroom can recoup as much or more than the cost of the job. Recent studies in Honolulu have shown that replacing an old, worn garage door can recoup the homeowner 120 percent to 180 percent of the job cost depending on the quality and features of the garage door. This is because of the enhanced curb appeal of a property with a new and attractive garage door. The garage door is the largest moving part of the house, and for most properties, it’s the first or second part of the house one sees from the street. Garage doors are available in galvanized steel, vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Most doors are available onesided, insulated or two-sided with insulation. Even a modest, new one-sided garage door will allow the homeowner to recoup well above the door cost in added resale value to the house. Higher priced specialty aluminum and wood doors will add a modest amount to the house value above the cost of the door and well in excess of the cost recouped by other home renovation projects. Servco Raynor offers a wide variety of door styles and sizes in all materials. Wood door construction for the Arbor Shore product line utilizes vertical grain lumber, fully matured Alaskan Western Red Cedar and uniform wood-tone consistency, all with lead times as short as four weeks. No other manufacturer can deliver the level of quality Raynor can.

Gain privacy and save space with a brand-new pocket door H omeowners today are looking for cost-effective ways to increase the amount of usable space in their existing home. When you can’t afford to lose the space that a swinging door takes up, install a door-in-the-wall with the Johnson Pocket Door Frame. A standard swinging door takes up to 14 square feet around an entry. Pocket doors use no floor space around an entry — in effect, giving you bigger rooms and hallways. With the swinging door out of the way, homeowners can put tables, credenzas and even shelving along the wall where the door use to be. Whether putting in converging doors-in-the-wall to make a grand entrance into a dining room or when you just need a single unit to save space in a den, you can get Johnson Pocket Door Frames to fit doors up to 5 feet wide by 9 feet high. Heavy duty frames support doors up to 300 pounds. For years of maintenance-free, smooth operation, the Johnson Pocket Door Frame is designed to eliminate the problems traditionally associated with a door-in-the-wall. The track’s box shape and convex rails make it impossible for hanger wheels to jump off. Special keyhole slots allow you to remove the track easily without tearing out a wall. With Johnson’s unique hanger clip system, you can remove the door for painting after the drywall and trim are in place. You can put in a pocket door frame with basic hand tools. The Pocket Door Frame comes with all hardware components including a pre-assembled track and header

The Power Spot How you position yourself and furniture within a room has a direct correlation to how empowered and successful you are in life

Place yourself in the best position Here are a few things to be aware of when you want to put yourself in the best position in any room, whether it’s your home or office:

with

Alice Inoue

QUESTION: There seems to be a paranoid theme in feng shui. Furniture is placed so no one can sneak up, and mirrors are hung so one can see what might approach from one’s “blind side.” Is this an archaic carryover from the warring states times?

• Make sure you can see the door easily from where you are sitting, sleeping or standing so that you are in the best position to deal with whatever might come through the door. If this is not possible, place a mirror where it will give you a better view. For example, if you sit at a desk that can’t be moved, put a “rear-view” mirror on your computer monitor so that you can easily see behind you. I like to affix a 2or 3-inch round mirror with self-stick tape to the upper corner of my computer screen. You can purchase such mirrors at any auto supply shop. • The key is to always give yourself the widest view of the room without being in direct line of the doorway. You know you are in the “power spot” when you feel comfortably in charge of the room. The next time you watch a movie scene with a powerful person sitting in a restaurant, notice where he or she is sitting. It will be far from the door, usually across the room from the entry, with his or her back to a wall.

F

eng shui is an ancient art, spanning thousands of years. Originally, people used it to find auspicious sites, harness “good energy,” and bring balance and harmony to anything energetically disruptive in the environment. The belief was that if you lived and operated in an energetically sound place, your life and/or business would have the best chance to flourish with ease, and opportunities would be maximized. Over the course of history, those in high positions, such as emperors and political leaders, used feng shui to maximize their status and maintain their power over people. Of course, those in power usually experience opposition and have enemies who want to overtake them. So, part of the feng shui philosophy emphasizes the importance of situating yourself in the most powerful position within the environment so that you can see all activity — including any enemies who might try to surreptitiously eliminate your carefully harnessed power. The power position The power position, also known as the “commanding position,” is a feng shui concept that helps you place yourself in the most powerful position in your home. This is to ensure you have the greatest command of a room — usually against a wall so that you can see all the entrances and nothing can happen behind your back. This allows you to be the focus of attention while enabling you to easily observe all activity in the room without craning or turning your neck. By choosing to place yourself in the power position, you gain an advantage in

This concept for positioning is powerful, a strong metaphor for being in control of your world. How you position yourself in a room has a relationship to how you position yourself in life which, in turn, has an effect on how empowered you are and, to a degree, how successful you are.

sleeping, negotiations, business activities and peace of mind. Safety and security An added benefit of positioning yourself in the power position is a greater subconscious sense of safety and security and less anxiety. We all have an instinctive need to maintain visible control over our environment. We are most comfortable when we know on many levels that no one can sneak up and surprise us. Think of how it feels when you are engaged in something and, without

your knowledge, someone is behind you, watching what you are doing. It feels disempowering. In feng shui, if you are positioned so that you cannot see all the activity that enters and leaves a room or occurs behind you, mirrors are used to reflect that activity and to bring into view anything out of sight.

Ready to deck your halls with innovative tips, techniques? T he holiday season doesn’t have to always involve the same old, same old when it comes to decorating your home. Take a few ideas from John Griffith. As the lead visual merchandiser for Replacements Ltd., he spends the entire year scouting and developing innovative tips and techniques to deck the halls and trim the perfect tree. So far, Griffith’s team has adorned nearly a dozen trees throughout the company’s retail store. Each tannenbaum is a story in itself, defined by color, style and unique looks created by combining ornaments with what some might consider nontraditional trimmings. “So many people settle for simply hanging ornaments on their trees, but there is so much more you can do by adding fillers that really reflect your own personal taste and style,” said Griffith. “Mixing in ribbon, fabrics, florals, feathers and other natural elements create flair and personality. Adding extra flourishes in the right places can make the difference between a pretty tree and an extraordinary tree.” Griffith said the hot colors for holiday 2012 range from soft pastels to rich jewel tones. Popular ornaments this season reflect the Victorian era, with glittering gemstones and rhinestones being extremely popular. And don’t be afraid to forgo the traditional tree topper. Instead, consider using twigs or other natural elements arranged out of the top of your tree. Griffith has even strategically placed a tree beneath a chandelier for extra glow.

If you don’t have enough room for a traditional sized tree, corner trees or the flatter profile trees are an excellent fit for smaller spaces. Or, Griffith suggested you may want to go in an entirely different direction. “I am into repurposing and recycling, so I took the branches of an old artificial tree and wired them together to create swags, and then decorated those with combinations of fabrics, bows and ornaments,” he said. “You can hang swags on a mantel or place them on top of a door

frame. They’re a fun family project, and you can even create them with different color stories or themes for each room in your home.” Griffith literally has thousands of ornaments at his fingertips. While most people know Replacements as the world’s largest retailer of old and new china, crystal, silver and collectibles, the company has a vast selection of ornaments from around the globe. These range from colorful blown glass to crystal and highly collected silver. “As individuals, we chose ornaments for so many different reasons. Decisions may be driven by color or theme, but many choices are shaped by past and future traditions,” said Keith Winkler, the company’s product marketing manager. “Many people reach back to ornaments that

great addition to any door is a beautiful wreath — either decorative or seasonal — to greet your guests and neighbors. Here is a stylish and unique do-it-yourself wreath:

remind them of their childhood, while others are looking to start their own traditions with annual collectible ornaments. For instance, Wallace Silver makes an annual sleigh bell, while Gorham Silver releases an annual snow flake. These have been in production for more than four decades and are a great tradition to add every year.” Winkler said popular dinnerware manufacturers including Lenox, Wedgwood and Waterford all offer ornament lines. For those looking for popular blown glass, he

suggested the Merck Family’s Old World Christmas line. Those ornaments run the gamut from traditional holiday figures to birds, sports teams and pretty much any theme you can imagine. If you are interested in more ideas, you can find decorating and entertaining tips at www.replacements.com, while Replacements will post additional ideas throughout the upcoming holiday season on its Facebook page.

Snowflakes wreath To create the wreath, start by painting a craft foam ring with Krylon Indoor/Outdoor paint in Global Blue. Once the paint is dry, add a coat of Glitter Blast in Sapphire Shimmer for a sparkling finish. While it is drying, spray wooden snowflakes with Indoor/Outdoor in White. Next, spray two sheets of cardstock and the dried wooden snowflakes with Glitter Blast in Diamond Dust. Then, spray the wreath, card stock and wooden snowflakes with Glitter Blast Clear Sealer, which will protect your creation. Once dry, cut out about 125 snowflakes using

paper punches and attach them to the wreath using push pins. Finally, use ribbon to attach a large bow and wooden snowflakes to the wreath with a hot glue gun. All that is left to do is hang it on the door. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

Center of Attention By following these expert tips, your holiday centerpiece is sure to stand out

hen it comes to flowers and greenery and creating a beautiful centerpiece, I can certainly get by, but I’m no expert. With so many holiday dinners right around the corner, I thought I’d ask one of my go-to experts for the best tips on how to create a beautiful holiday centerpiece for your table. Mike Miyashiro is owner and chief designer at Rainforest in Kilohana Square. I turn to him often because of his attention to detail, creativity and customer service. Here are his tips — presented in his own words. Take it away, Mike!

W

Holiday succulent accents “Some of the most versatile plants we know of are wonderful succulents that grow well even when we’re not trying. We grow them year-round and chop them and multiply them in our gardens and pots. During the short days of winter, most flowering plants disappear, but not the succulents. Why am I mentioning succulents? Many of them resemble roses and exotic flowers that when combined with holiday accents, take on a new look. “An easy decorating idea involves using a thin, coated wire to wrap stems of holly, greens and succulents together on a branch. Use moss or even dried leaves free of pests and crumbles. Gather materials and place them along the branch. From a point, wrap and tie the wire around the stems and begin ‘haku-ing’ branches, leaves and succulents together onto the branch. If you’re a haku maker whose winding gets bigger and grander until it looks like a horse’s wreath at the Kentucky Derby, then you’re the perfect candidate to make this because it doesn’t have to be thin enough for someone to wear. “Finish the end by tying off the wire and hiding the tied end piece. Use this as a wall hanging by attaching a wire or string to the top, or placing it sideways on a plate or lay14 • DECEMBER 16, 2012

“There you have it: a beautiful centerpiece using scraps, accents and flowers.”

Thank you, Mike! I am loving the quick and easy aspects of your tips, especially how you use things you might already have lying around the house or yard. And for those of you out there looking for one-ofa-kind centerpieces for your holiday table, if you’re like me, I’m sure you can’t wait to get started. Happy decorating! ing it in a fancy pot. Succulents grow geotropically, so plants facing the wrong way will eventually ‘right’ themselves by facing up. If you must, go ahead and add a bow and Christmas balls, and even a baby Rudolph. But the beauty is all yours in the making.” E-Z Trim centerpieces “Using leftover tree trimmings, or a

designer bag of holiday trimmings will start you off in the right direction to make what I like to call E-Z Trim designs. Take out that old ceramic vase (the kind they don’t make any more) and garnish it with your holiday greenery. Pull out those pine cones, and even fake holly if you want, then add just a couple of nice accent flowers to this mix.

Live large in small spaces he American home may be shrinking, but not the great american dream. Americans are still living large, just doing so in smaller spaces. To some trend-watchers, the down-scaling of the American home comes as good news. Architects, designers, and social observers say our willingness to resize our floor space means Americans are rethinking the way we really live and how we use whatever space we do have. Home, they say, has become less about impressing others and more about making ourselves happy. And since we are mostly Boomers — that tidal wave of Americans born between 1946 and 1964 — who have long been accustomed to getting what we want, happiness is often defined

T

in terms of luxuries and personal amenities. “Natural materials like American Hardwoods are redefining the word ‘luxury,’ ” said Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center. “Hardwoods bring richness and warmth to even small rooms, whether it’s used on the floors and walls, or crafted into built-ins. Custom hardwood furnishings like bookcases and cabinets make a home personal, yours alone, and isn’t that the ultimate luxury!” More ideas are to use a sectional sofa to delineate an intimate seating area within an open floor plan. And find a standing wood-panel screen to create privacy or isolate a work space, say, in a bedroom office area. And don’t forget to make it sustainable. Living green is a high priority for the anti-McMansion generation. So while the size of the “average” U.S. home may be shrinking, remember that it’s more about a space that satisfies the psyche in the process that defines the ultimate in luxury. Think custom kitchens with pro-quality appliances, posh home-spa baths and the beauty and warmth that only come with hardwood flooring, cabinetry and millwork. LOKAHI GARAGE EXPERTS

A garage remodel can add equity, ergonomics T he newest phrase on the street for home improvement is “garage enhancement,” and it is a great way to add to your equity without buying or building a new home. Interestingly, most of us don’t think of our garages very much. In fact, many of us don’t think of them as an asset at all. Research shows that many home sellers and even salespeople for new residential developments do not show the garage to potential buyers.Typically a garage comprises 20 to 30 percent of the footprint of the structure, so to not have any value-adding design to such a large area is very surprising. Perhaps this is because the garage has historically been an empty shell of four walls and a concrete floor. You are lucky if you have drywall, let alone painted walls in yours. With a garage enhancement, much value can be added — and seen aesthetically, felt ergonomically and realized financially. More times than not, potential home buyers will see a finished garage or ‘enhanced garage’ and choose to buy that

property over a property without a garage enhancement. Not only does a garage enhancement increase the value of your property, but it can be an asset to your daily life as well. A garage remodel can create a place with workbenches and hanging tool storage to efficiently work on hobbies, mechanics and home projects. It also can feature attractive cabinets, flooring that’s easy-to-clean and additional storage. An enhanced garage can even be used for overflow entertaining during the holidays and family gatherings. To many of us, it seems that our garages have turned into mismanaged and disorganized storage units that are conveniently located close to home. Think of a functional garage with an

attractive garage floor that is easy to clean and maintain, and leaves you worry-free from stains, unsightly rough concrete, cracks and oil stains. Now imagine that you can have this revolutionary new system installed in just one day with a manufacturer’s material lifetime warranty not to peel or delaminate. Then, imagine it completely organized with ergonomic custom cabinets, workbenches or even an entertainment system

or bar to suit your individual needs. Lokahi Garage Experts’ products are proudly made in the U.S. and are the most durable coatings and cabinet systems in the industry — so much so that Lokahi Garage Experts epoxy coatings and cabinets come with lifetime material warranties. Lokahi Garage Experts can help you “unclutter your world.” For a free in-home estimate, call 596-8833.

HONSADOR LUMBER DECEMBER 16 • 2012 19

Build with quality lumber framing re you considering building a new structure or adding on to one? If you are, you need to be concerned about the framing materials that will go into your project. If you are hiring a general contractor, you should know what framing materials they are planning to use. If you or your builder is choosing to use framing lumber, then you are making a very good choice — one that will give you years of dependable service, strength and comfort. Not all the lumber available in Hawaii is the same from supplier to supplier. Honsador Lumber has set a new standard for wood framing in Hawaii. In conjunction with Pacific Northwest lumber mills such as Weyerhaeuser, one of the best in the industry, Honsador brings you what is known as Honsador Premium Lumber. Sourced from sustainable and wellmanaged forests under the watchful eye of the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI), only the highest-quality Douglas Fir is imported for use by builders and homeowners alike. Honsador’s lumber buyers specify that their timbers have to be free of heart (the

A

center of the tree) and free of wane (absence of bark on the four long edges of the piece) in most cases. Builders get Honsador Premium Lumber in record time from the mills. Shipments leave the Pacific Northwest every week. Upon arrival, Honsador Premium Lumber is quickly processed through a HiBor treatment. This is a timetested and very successful, non-toxic termite and fungus treatment that provides a 20-year, $5,000 warranty to qualified projects. The lumber is then positioned for sale and is considered the freshest, cleanest and easiest-to-nail lumber in the state. Honsador Premium Lumber is the new industry standard for quality, freshness and appearance. Here are some points to consider: • Wood will not rust. • Wood is resistant to heat gain (wood is 400 times less heat conductive than steel and 8 1/2 times less than concrete). • Wood is a renewable product. • Wood framing is the least expensive framing medium, preferred by builders and offers superior thermal performance as well as acoustic absorption. PACIFIC ISLE CONTRACTORS LTD.

Putting homeowners’ needs first ounded by president Carl Gaumont in 1987, Pacific Isle Contractors Ltd. has been building and remodeling homes in the Islands for a quarter of a century. Gaumont describes the company as a small contracting business that has found its niche in residential remodeling. Projects range from kitchen and baths to large-scale renovations, additions and new-home construction. While Pacific Isle Contractors has completed many additions and renovations over the years, older homes built in the 1930s and 1940s are some of its favorite projects. “We renovated a number of older homes in the Nuuanu and Manoa areas and appreciate the architecture of that era,” said Gaumont. “Some of these homes were considered ‘tear downs’ by other contractors, but after careful inspection, we found them quite structurally sound. “You need to put things in perspective. If you’re going to spend the money on a large scale renovation and 10 percent of that cost is necessary for repairs to the structure, you’re probably ahead of the game once you figure in the replacement costs of one of these beautiful older homes.” Since oftentimes the clients will be living in the home while work is being done, they are kept abreast of the scheduling and scope of work to be performed at any given time to minimize disruption to their daily lives. “Communication is a high priori-

Our goal is to help you attain your dream home.” Here is some feedback Pacific Isle Contractors has received from its clients: It has been eight years since Pacific Isle Contractors did a very challenging, major renovation and addition to our very unique Kailua home. We were not only extremely happy with the results, but loved the experi-

HAWAII HARDWOOD FLOORING DECEMBER 16 • 2012 21

Stumped on flooring options? Choose wood BY KYLE GALDEIRA ust in time for the holidays, Hawaii Hardwood Flooring is giving the gift of savings to both new and loyal customers. As it makes the move from its current Kalihi location to a new home down the road at 1727 Republican St., Hawaii Hardwood Flooring is offering up to 70 percent off a wide range of flooring products and accessories. So, as the company moves into its new digs, customers can move some high-quality flooring upgrades into their homes and still have enough money left over to take care of holiday shopping lists. The flooring experts are also offering a Holiday Refinishing Special, as home or business owners can refinish an existing flooring system for just $4.75 per square foot. Hawaii Hardwood Flooring brings more than 30 years of experience to every flooring project it takes on, and president Chris Brenna makes it a priority to offer customers a multitude of residential and commercial flooring options. The company features three installation teams and three sanding and fin-

If a brand-new flooring system is not feasible, Brenna suggested refinishing any existing wood flooring to extend its life. He noted that it will usually take a week for his team to sand and refinish 500 square feet of flooring, and the floor will need 30 days to harden after the refinishing process, as the floor will cure and become scuff-resistant. “If you live in an older house with existing flooring that is looking pretty old, you can refinish the floor with our dustless sanding and finishing process that typically takes a week to do,” said Brenna, who also recommended putting protectors on the bottom of furniture pieces to lessen their impact on the floor. “The process will make your floors

look brand new for company coming over.” Hawaii Hardwood Flooring also has some tips for homeowners looking to brighten or spruce up their living space in anticipation of hosting guests. For those homeowners with aging carpet who have been considering switching to a hardwood flooring option, Brenna suggested pre-finished engineered or solid hardwood floor types as a quick and effective solution, as installation normally takes one to two weeks. While pre-finished hardwood flooring has grown in popularity, Hawaii Hardwood Flooring is one of the few local flooring businesses also offering sand-and-finish and unfinished materials. The wide variety of flooring choices coupled with their corre-

sponding installation procedures and distinct appearances provide customers with a wealth of choices throughout each project. Hawaii Hardwood Flooring offers peace of mind with a price-match guarantee, twoyear warranties (as opposed to one-year guarantees offered by most competitors) and the user-friendly company is also able to assist with the moving of furniture and cleaning. Additionally, the company offers free cleaning kits with each flooring system purchased and installed. “Updating your flooring is just one of the ways to spruce up your home in time for the holidays,” Brenna said. For more information, call 842-7755. To speak with Brenna directly about the best flooring options, call 306-3374.
