Putting a drawer in its place

have been training for the Honolulu Marathon since August, and the big day is finally here. If you are reading this on Sunday, I’m either out on the course or happily finished, enjoying a big meal with some well-deserved french fries. I’ve made the Honolulu Marathon (and the months of training leading up to it) a major part of my life. But one of the things I love most is being able to enjoy eating almost anything afterward, guilt-free. The race takes place around this time

each year, and afterward I spend several days making and eating cookies and big meals at home. I remember one year, just after the marathon, I was sitting down to one of my big-meal rewards, and I realized I needed a fork. I ran into the kitchen, pulled out the drawer, and the entire thing fell out! Utensils scattered all over the floor, and I could no longer happily enjoy my meal. The problem was we lived in an old house with old drawers. They had no stopping mechanism, so every time you pulled one out, you had to make sure you only went so far. Otherwise, it would fall out completely. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered how easy it is to add a stop to a drawer.

All you need is a small piece of hardwood, a drill, a screw and a screwdriver. First, empty your drawer. Then, make sure the hardwood is the right size. It should be about 2-inches long. Next, drill a hole about 3/4inches away from the end of the wood. Remove the drawer and pick a spot on the back end, toward the top of the drawer. Screw the block on to this spot. Then, turn the block horizontally and slide the drawer back inside, keeping it slightly open, but with the back pushed in past the cabinet face. Turn the block vertically. This will allow the block to catch the cabinet face frame when you pull the draw-

er out. If you ever need to take your drawer out in the future, simply turn the block horizontally. If you don’t have a piece of hardwood handy, you can also do this with premade drawer stops. These usually come in plastic or metal, and you can find them at most hardware stores. Don’t let your drawers ruin your meals. The fix is relatively easy, and it works for dressers, too.

Windows Hawaii

Setting your sights on the latest window technology BY SARAH PACHECO

learly, windows are one of the most cost-effective ways to save energy for your home. Yet, the science of how and why replacing your windows is so important, especially in Hawaii’s tropical climate, is oftentimes overlooked. Just take a look around your home and count the number of openings. How many windows and doors do you find? Is the number 10, 15 or closer to 20? Your roof protects the interior of your home, the floors support its foundation and the walls hold everything together. But the windows are what allow light in and for air to flow freely from room to room. Sometimes, this may not be such a great thing, especially when you are trying to control the comfort level of your home. But with the advent of coatings on the inside of dualpane glass, energy loss can result in energy savings of up to 38 percent. In warm climates, such as our island home, Anlin Windows can help you reduce your energy use and cut cooling costs. The first step is introducing coating systems and spacers to your windows. There are other dual-pane windows that have similar coatings and similar spacers, but none can compete with the combination of Infinit-e Plus glazing system and Platinum Elite spacers, only available by Anlin Windows. Infinit-e Plus is a high-performance glazing system that is state-of-the-ar t in window technology. Used together with Platinum Elite spacers, the industry’s most efficient

The next step in creating high-performance windows for your home looks at the exterior of the glass. Anlin’s Infinit-e Plus High Performance Glazing System has a unique surface coating that uses the clean science of combining silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide to the outer surface of the glass. This process creates a chemical reaction with the sun’s UV rays that literally decomposes organic materials — dust, dirt and scum — on the spot, resulting in a smoother surface of glass that makes

it possible to enjoy the beautiful views with a lot less work on your end. Think of it like “self-cleaning glass.” The most important investment you can make is in your home. As a leader in home improvements, Windows Hawaii can help answer your questions, address your energy concerns and provide solutions when it’s time to replace your windows or paint your siding. Let it rain Wish your basic bathroom was a relaxing retreat? You can quickly achieve serenity by simply swapping out your showerhead. The new Moen Halo rainshower, available at The Home Depot, is a perfect pick. Halo features an innovative, pivoting double-ring design which provides 60 percent more coverage than traditional non-pivoting rainshowers, while offering three spray settings — full rainshower, deep massage and relaxing massage — for a spa-like experience. With an easy two-step installation you can upgrade your bathroom in no time. Bring new life to lighting Light is an important element for any room — but are your lamps looking a bit lackluster? Turn older lamps from trash to treasure with a coat of spray paint. Today’s spray paint offerings provide endless choices — from shiny metallics to subdued hammered or brushed finishes — which can create the style you desire in minutes. Plus, new products, such as KrylonDualPaint and Primer, offer a simple one-step solution to make your transformation quick and professional looking. Finish off by illuminating your creation with a new lamp shade to complete a magnificent makeover in no time. slideshows of your family, friends and favorite moments. Think you’re not techsavvy or it will take too long to do? Many frames allow you to simply insert the memory card from your camera to create the instant show. Plus, you’ll no longer have to worry about choosing the perfect picture or the trouble of developing and sizing it to fit the frame. Charisma with color It’s proven that color can influence our mood, making it an important element to consider for every room in your home. Adding small accents of color within a space can be an instant and easy update that can change with your mood. For living rooms or bedrooms, plush throw pillows or blankets can create an entirely different look and feel. Try bold colors to add vibrant energy, or soft, neutral colors for a calming, warm essence. And don’t be afraid of patterns and textures — a com-

bination of styles can create a look that is completely unique to your style. Next, arouse your sense of smell with aromatic candles and floral arrangements. Finally, in kitchens and baths, swap your basic hand towels for a new vibrant color or design. You’ll find making small updates can be simple, yet produce dramatic results easily. Faucet focus From prep to clean-up the kitchen faucet is one essential you interact with on a frequent basis everyday, so if yours is not up to the job, it’s time for an update. The new Haysfield with MotionSense from Moen makes it easy to accomplish a variety of routine tasks with speed and efficiency. A simple hand movement sets water in motion in

an instant and helps prevent the spread of germs. And, replacing a kitchen faucet can be a surprisingly simple do-ityourself project. Simply follow the enclosed directions, or utilize online installation guides and videos, and you’ll soon enjoy the fashion and functionality of your new faucet. When you’re feeling your home needs an instant update, don’t become overwhelmed. Changes can be simple, fast and cost-effective, while still offering fantastic, functional and stylish results.

G&S SHUTTER DESIGNS

Beat the heat with these plantation-style shutters T his state is definitely one of the most beautiful places to live, and some of us are lucky enough to call Hawaii our home. To some people, we are blessed with great weather year-round. However, every homeowner knows the troubles of heat and moisture and the toll they take on our homes. Being able to control the amount of heat that penetrates our homes is one of the best features that plantation shutters allow any homeowner. Plantation shutters make it easy to insulate your home, and keep the cool in and heat out. The ability to regulate the temperature in your home helps to upkeep the interior by blocking out harmful heat and UV rays that can wear and damage your floors, furniture and paint. Shutters also help to keep your home cooler, which in turn will make it easier to beat Hawaii’s heat. G&S Shutter Designs has one of the best plantation shutters in the islands. The design of its Polycore Shutter is made to withstand the heat and resist the extreme elements that Hawaii has to offer. Polycore Shutters feature an aluminum co-extruded core. This core helps to maximize the strength and durability of the shutter, which in turn makes it invulnerable to heat and moisture we deal with in Hawaii. G&S Shutter Designs is a small local company that aims to provide Hawaii homeowners with the highest quality shutter at the most affordable price. “We like to treat each and every home as if it were our

own,” said Gavin Shibuya, owner of G&S Shutter Designs. “We take pride in our work and always focus on customer service and exceptional workmanship.”

The strength of the Polycore Shutter allows G&S Shutter Designs to be one of the only companies to take shutter panels up to 36 inches in width, whereas most other companies can only reach 28 inches. The remarkable strength of the Polycore Shutter also guarantees that homeowners will not run into issues with warping. G&S Shutter Designs aims to beautify and protect Hawaii homes, one abode at a time. Contact the company today for quality plantation shutters at the best prices.

GRAHAM BUILDERS DECEMBER 9 • 2012 7

Supporting youth here at home Family-owned design+build company hosts 13th annual holiday party for Hawaii Children’s Cancer Foundation raham Builders is known as the state’s most experienced design+ build company specializing in residential construction. It is also known for its big heart and history of giving back to the community through its long-time support of Hawaii Children’s Cancer Foundation (HCCF). In fact, the Graham Builders team was honored by the State of Hawaii as one of Hawaii’s Outstanding Advocates for Children and Youth in 2011, in large part due to its work with HCCF. Thanks to Graham Builders, the children and families of HCCF enjoy festive food, presents and a visit from Santa Claus during the holiday season. This year’s party was held on Saturday, Dec. 8, and it marked 13 years in a row that Graham Builders hosted and organized the par ty at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children for more than 200 young patients and their families. And for those who have seen Graham Builders in action building a multigenerational home, it is no surprise that they efficiently handled everything for this party. “It was Danny Graham, our company CEO, along with his wife Charlotte, who took on the task of organizing HCCF’s annual holiday party 13 years ago simply because they felt it was the right thing to do,” said Evan Fujimoto, Graham Builders’ President. “After a close family friend lost their grand-

G

child to cancer, the Grahams wanted to do more and help in a bigger way. Prior to Graham Builders hosting the event, the parties used to be a potluck among the families. Then Danny stepped in, spiced it up and put true kamaaina holiday spirit into the party!” Families have the opportunity to enjoy each other and the company of the others whose children are also facing life-threatening illnesses, providing them a time for a bit of respite and joy during a difficult period in their lives. The entire Graham Builders staff, including Fujimoto, served dinner to these special kids and their families. “We are so grateful to the big hearts at Graham Builders for organizing HCCF’s annual holiday party for the past 13 years,” said HCCF president Randy Aina. “Graham Builders was the perfect host, and they put a true kamaaina holiday spirit into the party by personally serving lunch to all our families. It was nice to see their staff and leadership making sure that everyone is welcomed and taken care of. We appreciate their support. We couldn’t do this without their generosity.” In 2007, Graham Builders expanded its support of HCCF by raising awareness on behalf of the nonprofit organization at each monthly “Building Your Home for Life” seminar. Every donation is matched by Graham Builders and the team helps educate seminar

attendees about HCCF and why it’s so important to support the organization. Through this initiative, Graham Builders has collected more than $14,000 for HCCF. “As long as there are kids with cancer, we’re going to continue to help,” said Fujimoto. “We won’t quit until there is a cure.” “Every year, the Graham Builders holiday party is the highlight of the season for our HCCF families,” added Aina. “My favorite memories are seeing the joy on the faces of the children when Santa makes his entrance.” Graham Builders has crafted quality homes that last for generations for the past

20 years. Graham Builders guides families through the design-build process, step-bystep with the most experienced professionals. One of the few design and build companies in the state to have dedicated designers on staff to create a family’s Home for Life, Graham Builders works closely with families through a collaborative process to bring their dreams to life. A leader in multi-generation homes and aging-in-place design, Graham Builders is able to provide its expertise to those who need to modify their current home so they can live there for a lifetime.

GOLDEN CABINETS & STONE INC.

Going for the gold BY KYLE GALDEIRA or more than five years, Golden Cabinets & Stone Inc. has gained a reputation for offering quality, affordable cabinetry and countertops to meet the needs of Hawaii’s consumers. Owner Wayne Cao noticed how expensive it had become to purchase the products in Hawaii and sought to bring more affordable options to residents looking to either build from scratch or remodel existing spaces. “When we transform a client’s outdated kitchen into a new, more functional kitchen, it is most satisfying seeing their face and hearing how much their whole family enjoys this new element in their home,” Cao said. “We’re licensed contractors, so we provide full service from installation to painting.” Cao also noted that Golden Cabinets & Stone Inc. is fully stocked with inventory, and “plenty of choices” are available for customers shopping for everything from cabinetry to hardware — including handles for an attractive yet functional touch. Golden Cabinets & Stone Inc. has a new location to serve its customers that have come to appreciate the company’s professional customer service, quality products and “unbeatable” prices. With a 3,000-square-foot showroom at its Kalihi-Palama store located at 1299 Kaumualii St., the company offers a multitude of cabinetry in addition to 50 varieties of countertops, 30 choices of sinks and high-quality tile varieties — a perfect combination when renovating a bathroom or kitchen. Other pos-

Golden Cabinets & Stone Inc. offers seven wood selections that are used in designing cabinetry. The cabinets are constructed from solid wood doors and plywood boxes, and provide customers with unsurpassed quality not available from competitors that offer particle or pressboard cabinetry. The company is continually offering new cabinet styles along with countertop selections. The Luxurious Cherry is a popular wood selection when it comes to designing cabinetry, and offers consumers a fine-grain wood that features a smooth texture and satiny feel. The wood closely resembles the coveted Koa wood appearance, and is usually finished with a medium or dark stain to bring out the wood’s mahoganyred tones. Cherry is integral in defining the Shaker, Mission and country-style cabinets offered at Golden Cabinets & Stone Inc. Other styles of Cherry wood

offered include the Royal Cherry — the company’s topof-the-line wood option — as well as Golden Cherry, which features a lighter tone of wood with the same strength as its darker alternatives. Golden Cabinets & Stone Inc. also offers multiple elements of customization, including 30- and 40-inch wall cabinets as well as the option of including glass panels as an added artistic element. Special orders are welcomed, and if customers provide the measurements for their desired cabinetry, the company can create a 3-D computer rendering of what the finished product will look like. “We truly appreciate each and every one of our clients who have given Golden Cabinets & Stone Inc. the opportunity to fulfill their cabinetry needs,” Cao said. KAHALA PACIFIC FLOORS

A visit from the flooring experts T

he professionals at Kahala Pacific Floors share this adaptation of a classic Christmas poem:

KAHALA PACIFIC FLOORS

’Twas a few weeks before Christmas and all through the house, the carpet felt icky and was smellin’ so gross. The vinyl was peeling from lack of good care, with lots of little dimples from the dining room chairs. But new flooring always seemed to be so far away, and the homeowners simply said, “Let’s leave that for another day.” So the children just played ‘mong the dust mites and soiling, while Mommy and Daddy for a new floor were toiling. But suddenly they saw an ad in Hawaii Renovation, for great flooring products and professional installation! So they decided to give Kahala Pacific Floors a call, and from there, it was a very happy ending for all! Kahala Pacific Floors would like to give you a happy ending, too, with a beautiful new floor. Whether it’s visions of wood, luxury vinyl, stone or new carpet dancing in your head, Kahala Pacific has a wide selection of products to meet your taste and budget. Formally known as Pacific Imports International, the company’s 3,000 square foot Kalihi showroom features hundreds of different flooring choices. The sales associates are extremely knowledgeable and informative, and they offer free in-home consultations and licensed professional installation for everything they sell. Additionally, Kahala Pacific holds a free monthly seminar entitled “Wood and Stone Flooring 101,” in which homeowners learn about flooring choices, pros and cons of each

lines of wood and laminate flooring. The Kahala Floors brand of engineered wood is one of the best products you will find anywhere, and it was developed by company president Shirley Pai Hilton. In working with flooring, she saw the need for a high-quality engineered wood flooring to satisfy Hawaii’s needs. “Oak and maple are popular on the Mainland, but the Hawaii market screams for more of the exotic species,” said Hilton. Ipe, Cumaru, Tigerwood and Santos Mahogany are just a few of the company’s most popular floors. Hawaii’s humidity and barefoot lifestyle also call for different species. There is no middleman, so while you pay an “average” price, you are getting a superior product. HOMEWORKS CONSTRUCTION DECEMBER 9 • 2012 11

Contractor’s designs sensitive to client lifestyle he first and most important step in any new construction or remodeling project is choosing the right contractor ... one who is not only licensed, but also experienced in the kind of project you are planning. Homeworks Construction project consultant Kim Green has planned and coordinated numerous projects in Hawaii, from simple additions to large multi-generational homes. “When people ask how they can be sure they are making the right choice, I offer several suggestions,” said Green. “First, schedule a meeting with the contractor you are considering, at your job site or their office. Find out if they are people you would want to work with. If yes, then take some time to check on their credentials with the Better Business Bureau and the Building Industry Association. Ask for references. “I routinely supply prospective clients with addresses of jobs comparable to the one they have in mind and will personally accompany them to the homes. Many owners volunteer to provide personal recommendations ... which is the best validation a contractor can receive. We also review albums with plans and photos of completed Homeworks projects.” Green noted that a big percentage of the company’s recent jobs are multi-generational homes. “Before we start work on a multi-generational home, I sit down with the family and have a discussion about everyone’s preferences and needs, future as well as present. The design must be sensitive to the family’s lifestyle.” Green will join Homeworks CEO Jim Byxbee on a special Build New Or ReDo

S. TANAKA CONSTRUCTION

Taking the stress out of any renovation process B uilding a new home or renovating your existing one can be an intimidating process. Sometimes just coming up with ideas and concepts can be confusing and wearisome. S. Tanaka Construction is a design/build company that can help you with your home construction projects from start to finish without any upfront costs. The company will listen to your project ideas and help you turn them into a reality. It will also assist you with alternative ideas or brainstorm concepts if you are struggling with a vision. Started by Shinya Tanaka in 1984, the business is now owned by his son, Ryan Tanaka. Together, the two of them have established a reputable company with loyal clientele. Most jobs that filter in are referrals from previous customers, and many of them are repeat customers. Common testimonials from previous clients reveal the ease in working with Ryan and Shinya, and the quality of service received during the building process and final outcome. S. Tanaka Construction focuses primarily on building new homes and does so from the ground up. What does this mean to you

ting process can be a tedious endeavor. If it’s a home renovation or addition you are interested in, S. Tanaka Construction specializes in those as well. Perhaps you want to upgrade your kitchen or bathroom to a more modern concept or extend your living

room. S. Tanaka Construction will assist you through the whole process just as effectively as if it were a brand-new home. If you’re interested in receiving an estimate from S. Tanaka Construction, it’s good to know that estimates are free, all-inclusive and, as long as the job remains within the scope of work, firm. However, do not expect a quote from the company based on the amount per square foot alone. S. Tanaka Construction does not come to a final price based on square footage, but rather on the specifics a client wants for the end result. For example, adding laminate flooring versus carpet or installing PV and central air will affect the final cost, so it is unrealistic to come up with a figure based only on square footage. This is how the company avoids price discrepancies and ensures that customers know exactly what they are getting. To contact S. Positively Perfect When searching for the ideal gift for the holidays, try on these feng shui-friendly presents for size full, sweet and abundant life. Gifts for Couples

with

Alice Inoue Anything in pairs Giving two of something, from images to candles, lamps, or vases filled with flowers, fosters a sense of balance and strengthens partnership in the recipients’ environment. For example, candles in an elaborate stand that matches the couple’s décor, would be in line with the energy of feng shui. Matching items are also excellent.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: “What are some good feng-shui or energy-positive gifts to give others? Do you have suggestions for the upcoming Christmas season?”

O

ne of the things I like about feng shui is that it helps me narrow down my gift-giving options. If you need to get something simple, this article will give you a few ideas. I have chosen items that will work for simple gift giving, bringing the essence of nature into the homes of your friends and family, and you can find them in ordinary stores. Gifts that embody more meaning and symbolism serve a deeper purpose, and shopping for them is personal. Gifts for the home

Candles Candles represent the sun and sunlight, which gives life to nature and offers opportunity, vitality and warmth. Candles also have the energetic ability to burn off negative energy and clear the air. A single candle, a set of candles, or a “candle-scape” makes a nice décor element while helping your recipient clear the space of lower energies.

Plants Plants are pieces of nature that are universally feng-shui positive, creating fresh air indoors, filling the space with positive, healthy energy. Although live plants require care, a gift of life makes a wonderful statement. If, for some reason, the person does not like live plants, substitute an authentic-looking silk plant. Silk, produced in nature by the silk worm, also symbolizes growth, brings vitality to the environment and is preferable to plastic, a man-made synthetic product. Whether purchasing live or silk plants, look for those that are full, lush and vibrant.

The color red Fire colors support relationship energy, so anything in red, pink, orange, coral, etc., offers energy toward building and maintaining passion in a relationship. Consider two red pillows, two red towel sets, two plants with red blossoms, etc. Water fountains Water represents flow, abundance and new opportunities. A water fountain is a good idea only if you know the recipient will enjoy and maintain it. A water fountain that is never taken out of the box or never plugged in will not be helpful. Make sure to let the recipient know that the entrance is an excellent location for a fountain and that the water direction should flow toward the interior of the room. Advise the recipient to keep the fountain out of the bedroom, as the sound of water can actually disrupt your sleep. Books Books represent wisdom and knowledge. Purchasing books as gifts is a wonderful way to open someone’s mind to something new and exciting. If you know the person has a specific interest, a few books on that topic will always be appreciated. Food or sweets Fruit baskets, wine, chocolates, sweets and the like make excellent gifts, symbolizing your hope that the recipient will have a

Porcelain or ceramic Earth is the element associated with romance, so items made of “earth,” such as ceramics, are considered good luck when given to a couple. Gifts of relationship significance, like a ceramic picture frame with the couple’s photo or red ceramic objects, such as hearts, birds and fish, are all excellent choices. What Not to Give From the perspective of feng shui, do you wonder what would be considered “bad” feng shui gifts? Keep in mind that this is just one perspective. The gifts mentioned are “traditionally” not given because of their symbolism. Bonsai Although bonsai are living trees, their growth has been stunted. Avoid giving bonsai to someone starting a new job or opening a new business, unless you want to stunt his or her growth.

Knives Gifts of sharp objects are not considered suitable because of the “cutting” energy they hold, representing the severing of the friendship. Examples are knives, letter openers, scissors, swords and the like.

Timepieces Desk clocks, standing clocks, wall clocks, pocket watches, wristwatches, and so forth, measure the passage of time and are usually avoided as gifts, especially from a younger person to an older person, because they symbolize the wish for a limited life span.

The key to giving positive gifts When your intent is to give a feng shuipositive gift, symbolism is the key. Find something that has a good meaning and that will be enough. Don’t get so caught up in the color, shape and details that choosing a gift becomes difficult. It’s much easier to go with the overall meaning. You can never go wrong with nature-based items and products because the very essence of nature is what supports us. Happy shopping!

Toss the messy paint brush and spray paint like a pro P rofessional house painters have used them for years; now Do-ItYourselfers are painting like professional painters using airless sprayers — saving time and effort, and with better results. When you paint, you want it done fast and what you painted to look its best. You are not only making an investment in your home, but protecting it from the elements. Airless paint sprayers get tedious painting projects like fences, decks, home exteriors and garage doors done faster and easier than using a brush or roller. Besides, paint brushes and rollers are a mess and painting with them takes hours to complete a project. With an airless paint sprayer, just pull the trigger to effortlessly release a consistent spray to cover house siding, fences, wicker furniture, shutters and other things that paint brushes cannot reach. A compressor and hoses are not needed. Airless sprayers are equipped with a powerful motor that sprays paint. Many paint sprayers feature easy adjustments for control over painting speed and spray pattern. Airless paint sprayers come in several configurations and designs but all have the same general features. The basic idea behind how an airless paint sprayer works is that it pumps the paint and pushes it out the tip of the spray gun. Airless sprayers provide solid, uniform coverage in a fraction of the time of tradi-

Airless Paint Sprayers can handle thin to thick materials such as semi-transparent stain, clear wood preservatives, water sealer, varnish, oil-based paint, oil-based stain or latex paint. Stress can affect the paint on our homes Who among us hasn’t complained at one time or another about the stress we’re under? Yet our homes suffer silently in the face of constant stress. It isn’t work, deadlines or family finances that cause problems for our homes. Rather, it’s the weather and environment. Even common conditions like strong sunlight and rain place stress on our abodes — and on the exterior paint that protects them, according to Debbie Zimmer, paint and color expert at the Paint Quality Institute. Here’s how even ordinary weather can put strain on your paint and cause it to suffer: • Sun. While most people are happiest on sunny days, the same bright conditions can wreak havoc on paint. “Ultraviolet rays tend to deteriorate the binder in exterior paint in much the same way that the rays can harm the skin on our bodies,” explained Zimmer. • Moisture. Rain and high humidity can also be hazardous for exterior paint. In fact, any form of moisture can cause paint to soften and swell, eventually leading to blistering, cracking, peeling or flaking. On top of that, moist conditions

support the growth of mildew, which can mar the appearance of any paint job. Top quality 100 percent acrylic latex paints resist weather stressors in several ways, said Zimmer. Compared to ordinary paints, high quality coatings are less affected by ultraviolet rays, so they tend to resist the sun’s bleaching effects. They also adhere well to the painted surface, so there is less chance of blistering, even in very moist conditions. This article is courtesy of Home Improvement News and Information Center.

CATHY LEE

Living On The Edge Do you want an edgier look to your space? Start with your wardrobe and accessories

bout a month ago, I wrote a column about how you can draw inspiration from your wardrobe to design your space. It was astonishing to me how many well-put-together women approach me and say they can create eclectic looks from their clothing, jewelry and accessories, but can’t seem to do the same with their spaces. As I showed you last time, you can! Think of accessorizing your home the same way you accessorize yourself. You know how sometimes you can achieve an edgier, more interesting look when you mix things up? Well, it’s the same with your rooms: Sometimes, doing something that seems wrong is the right way to go. For my inspiration piece, I went back to my boutique, the small corner that we’ve carved out in Cathy’s Marketplace with clothing, jewelry and accessories on consignment, and found a black St. John jacket. This is not your mother’s St. John! It’s a timeless piece that has a lightly ruffled lapel and draw string sleeves that create just enough interest and femininity. Now, what would you do with this jacket if it were in your closet? The traditional, easy thing would be to pair it with the matching black knit St. John skirt or slacks. Nice, stylish, classy? Absolutely. But very much expected. Let’s try to kick it up a notch by thinking outside the box. Say you want to go a bit more daring and unexpected. By juxtaposing this elegant jacket with something edgier, such as black leather pants or blue jeans, maybe even with a rip, you would highlight this jacket’s femininity even more and create a really interesting concept. A simple white T-shirt or even a black bustier would finish the look. Boots or skyhigh heels could make this outfit to die for. Do you get where I’m going? Now let’s take this idea with the black jacket and do the same for a very basic

A

black modern chair that you may have in your home. What type of side table and accessories could we pair this with? A square black modern table would certainly work, but would not create any tension in the room or give the space an eclectic vibe. A table — possibly an antique table — would make the chair feel more modern while at the same time giving the antique more of a sense of history. Although the hammered metal table in the photo above is modern in style, the unique use of material and its reflective quality also add an interesting contrast to the chair. And finally, pillows. Any solid color on a

modern chair would add a pop of color, however, your style and pattern would be one-dimensional. Incorporating an ikat print with the hammered metal could be great. Now both the chair and the pillow with the bold, geometric pattern are modern, so pairing these with the antique table and possibly silver candlesticks will give it a modern flair that ties it in with the edgy concept. So, do you get the picture? Don’t go with the same direction. Just as you would mix it

up a bit to create that eclectic outfit from your wardrobe, try going for that same vibe in your space. Think outside the box and try accessorizing in a different way. You’ll be amazed at how dressed-up your space can be!

Hardworking furniture for functional and stylish looks I n a world where everything seems to be working harder, it’s no doubt that furniture is pulling more weight lately as well. Gone are the days of flimsy, trendy design, while the search is on for durable, classic pieces that serve more than one purpose. Cedar chests, oak chests and steamer trunks are appearing in more living rooms, bedrooms, and sitting areas every day. These classic pieces provide any room with a cozy and historic feeling, as modern designs are based on the trunks and chests travelers would use for luggage during voyages both on sailing ships and horse-drawn carriages.Though few people would show up to the airport with a steamer trunk anymore, they still are very useful in the home. But, before purchasing a new trunk or chest, it’s important to consider different designs and materials to ensure your newest addition matches your décor and design needs. Steamer trunks can be identified by their brass hardware on the corners and joints, as well as latches and often leather straps. If it draws thoughts of treasure or sea shanties, it’s probably a steamer trunk! These are best used when taking into account the trunk’s original intent — to store keepsakes. Fill one with scrap books, special letters, cards, photographs, or art projects. Stored at the end of a bed or in an office, going through your sincerest mementos

will no longer be a dig through the bottom of the closet. You’ll find yourself enjoying your treasures more often, because you’ll be able to keep them stored in plain view! Cedar Chests do not usually have the same brass hardware or accents, but normally use a simpler design. The majority of people use Cedar Chests in bedrooms as they are perfect for storing textiles. Cedar is rot and decay resistant, but it also highly resistant to insect attack. No matter what you store in a cedar chest, you will never have to add foul-smelling moth balls. The rich cedar will naturally deter moths and keep your fabrics beautiful. Plus, there is no greater feeling than pulling heavy blankets out of your cedar chest on a cool autumn evening and smelling that inviting and comforting cedar aroma. Oak chests are durable and beautiful, and the perfect material for the eclectic organizer. Often used for children’s toy chests, young women’s hope chests, and adult’s storage chests, these classic pieces are enduring. The sturdy gentleness of solid oak brings refinement to rustic forms and adds balance to your home. Cherry chests exude luxury. As one of the most highly-sought woods for everything from cabinets to flooring, cherry creates magnificent chests. Chests and trunks of any material can serve double duty as coffee tables, side tables and even bed side tables. Imagine a coffee table in the family room that readily stores favorite puzzles, games and playing cards for spur-of-themoment family evenings. Others use chest cushions to create window seating. Pulled up under a window, this whimsical scene will allow people to lazily gaze outdoors from a picturesque perch. Any piece that can be used for storage, tables, seats, and decor can certainly be classified as “hardworking,” which is why these trunks and chests continue to be so popular. Whether you’re looking to solve small-space design issues or to add more classic appeal to your expansive floor plan, using classic steamer trunks, cedar chests, and oak chests is an ideal solution. DEEP PURPLE PAINTING

A painter who puts quality first BY KYLE GALDEIRA uality is the top priority for Jimmy Suh, owner of Deep Purple Painting, when it comes to assisting customers with a wide range of painting projects. “I’ve been painting for 25 years, and my main goal is to produce a quality job— that’s the most important thing,” Suh said. Suh moved to Hawaii in early 2010 to be closer to family and friends, and brought his successful painting business with him to the Islands. The contractor spent nearly 20 years in San Francisco building his business and cultivating a sterling reputation for producing quality results. Whether the job involves painting a home’s exterior, or a few walls of a commercial space, Deep Purple Painting has it covered. At the onset of each job, Suh confers with the owner to determine the necessary steps involved in refinishing the desired surfaces. The painter considers many factors, including the relationships between colors and how they compliment one another, and presents the owner with the viable options. Other aspects that Suh considers include the texture of certain surfaces, and what variety of paint will coat them in a way that both pro-

When meeting with Suh, customers are encouraged to view the completed jobs in person in order to fully understand the stellar workmanship that goes into every Deep Purple project. After the look and feel of the project is determined, the client is presented with a written estimate of both the cost of the job as well as a timeline detailing the work to be performed. “The word-of-mouth referrals that I receive come from the extensive preparation and excellent results from numerous

He stresses quality and an honest approach to customer service throughout each project he’s involved with. “A painter needs to follow the proper procedures,” Suh said. “That’s why there are so many problems here in Hawaii with painting projects. You need to prime the area, and prepare it properly. LEAKMASTER ROOFING DECEMBER 9 • 2012 21

Repair or replace your roof before installing solar panels T here is a mad rush in Hawaii to put up solar PV panels before the 65 percent federal and state tax credits get reduced or even eliminated over time. With bruising political fights raging over deficit reductions, there is no guarantee that these tax credits will go on forever. There is no better time than now to make that plunge. But in your race towards energy independence, don’t forget to consider replacing (or repairing) the roof underneath your new solar panels. That’s where LeakMaster Roofing comes in. The company specializes in integrating your new solar panels — both hot water and photovoltaic panels — into your roof system. Even if your existing roof is in fairly good condition, there are still things that you can do to preserve your

existing roof before it is covered up with panels. Don’t forget, once the panels are fastened tight to the roof deck for the next 20-plus years, your access to the roof itself becomes problematic if you should get a leak. It is much less expensive to repair or replace your roof before you install solar energy. Here are some possible solutions that can fit any budget:

Simply repair your existing roof

This is true especially if you have an asphalt shingle type of roof. Quite often these roofs have a lot of life left in them and they don’t have to be replaced. LeakMaster can usually inspect and repair these roofs before the solar installation,

LEAKMASTER ROOFING contact // 591-1900 address // 575 Cooke St. web // www.leakmaster.com

and then come back after the PV contractors are done to waterproof all the new penetrations in the roof deck. Depending on the condition of your shingles, LeakMaster can warrant against leaks for up to seven years.

Put a protective, waterproof coating underneath solar panels

If your roof is flat, you should at least waterproof the areas directly underneath the panels while there is easy access. Later on, when your budget allows, you can extend your protective coating to the rest of the flat roof. That is the beauty of roof coatings as opposed to old-fashioned asphalt roofing — you can do limited areas now, then tie them together later when they start to deteriorate. The Cool Roof Store’s Ceramic Titanium coatings block 100 percent of the sun’s UV rays so your old roof is preserved. You never have to tear off the old roof, just put on a new top coat every 10 to 15 years, using a fraction of the original coating.

solar contractors are finished, LeakMaster will come back and waterproof all your roof penetrations for no extra charge. If you have a flat roof, LeakMaster can install either a fabric re-enforced coating, such as the Cool Roof Store Ceramic coating, or a silicone-based coating, which may qualify for a 10-, 15- or even 20-year manufacturer labor and material warranty, depending on the roof. For commercial roofs, you may want to consider a heavy-duty single ply system, such as Duro-Last, which has the “World’s Best Warranty.” That’s because it insures you against any damage to the contents in your property caused by a faulty roof.

If your old roof is too far gone, install a new system with a long warranty

For a free appraisal of your roof, call LeakMaster Roofing at 591-1900 or visit the website at www.leakmaster.com. You can also stop by the Kakaako store at 575 Cooke St. to see the systems up close.

If you have a sloped roof, LeakMaster Roofing installs all major systems including shake, shingle, tile, metal and asphalt. After the

Making a home remodeling list — and checking it twice R emodeling one’s kitchen or bathroom can be the perfect step necessary for making a dream home become reality. However, the process of planning and waiting for those dreams to become reality, while also dealing with unexpected alterations and hiccups along the way, may actually create a house of horrors. With more than 50 years of combined experience under their collective tool belt, Don Holcomb and Dan Holt merged their talents to form DH Squared Construction in 2007. In addition to specializing in custom home building and remodeling, DH Squared also produces unique and exquisite custom, made-to-order cabinets. The company is well-versed in the home renovation business and has some vital tips that are sure to help homeowners simplify the renovation process. To start off, a homeowner should gather one’s thoughts, compiling a folder full of photos, concepts and ideas that are gleaned from television, magazines or Hawaii Renovation. This folder should also include current photos of the home and examples of existing spaces and design concepts already utilized so potential designers have a foundation on which to build. Whether a homeowner is making changes to a bathroom, kitchen or both, DH Squared suggests making a list of “needs, wants and desires.” This list will solidify aspects of the remodeling job that are absolutely necessary, making them vital to the job’s success. It should include changes that are selected to add value, but do not necessarily need adjusting, and items that are desired, but may add more of a “wow” factor as opposed to simple functionality. Making such a list will aid in determining exactly what can and should be done based on a homeowner’s budget, and will cut out some of the stress involved with addressing specific needs, whether it be adding new cabinetry or fixtures. After establishing one’s budget and selecting a qualified designer and contractor, homeowners must be prepared for the “chaos” that will ensue. While it may seem simple,

some homeowners forget that during the remodeling process, there will be limitations to certain areas, so it is vital to establish alternative living areas within the home so life can go on. Before construction commences, work with the building team on blocking any openings with plastic barriers to prevent any dust and dirt from wafting into other areas of the home — a simple task that will save both money and headaches once the remodeling job is done. Another important step that a homeowner should take during the process is to inspect new items from the time they enter the home until the installation is complete. For instance, if new cabinetry is ordered, the homeowner should make sure that the cabinet style and color is consistent with what they ordered. Then, once the cabinetry is put in place, they should ensure all doors and drawers open and function correctly, so problems can be addressed before signing off on the completed project. When it comes to cabinet design and construction, DH Squared is able to help with an efficient manufacturing process aided by some of the world’s finest technology. “We started the cabinet business in 2008 to provide our clients with a custom quality cabinet made in Hawaii with a fast turnaround time. We wanted them to have the best product available with all the desired features,” Holcomb said while mentioning the TenonCam cabinet design and fabrication system that DH Squared utilizes. “It’s part of a lean manufacturing process that allows us to work more efficiently. It saves on time and material costs as well. In the old days, when we did all this by hand, what took us a week now takes us a day. We’re more efficient and produce more, so we are able to pass this cost savings on to our clients. One of the good things is that our cabinets are made in Hawaii, so if anything changes, or any pieces need to be replicated, we’re able to react right then, quickly.” For more information or to arrange an estimate, call DH Squared Construction at 383-2218 or visit the website www.DHSquaredConstruction.com.

Safe bathrooms for the disabled roviding safe bathrooms for people with special needs requires knowledgeable planning in the field of what’s called universal design. When implementing your plan, remember that such bathrooms need not look institutional. Begin the planning process with an inventory of the intended user’s skills, focusing not on disabilities, but capabilities, likes and tastes. What can the person do? What does he or she like to do?

P

Bathrooms for disabled should be larger than normal The first priority in bathrooms intended for people who use wheelchairs is plenty of room for access and maneuvering. Barrier-free bathrooms are usually larger than average. Provide for an open area within the bathroom that’s at least 5 feet in diameter to allow for easy turning. Also provide 4 feet of clear space in front of each fixture, as well as between the sink and the toilet, if both fixtures share the same wall. These spaces also will allow room for a caregiver, if needed. Make doorways 3 feet wide to enable a wheelchair to pass through. The bathroom door must swing outward rather than inward and should be fitted with a lever-

type handle, not a knob. Specify a vanity designed for use from a wheelchair. Plan for a sit-down dressing table with a 31-inch-high countertop and at least 30 inches of clear knee space underneath so a chair can pull in close. The shower stall should have no threshold that would impede the entrance and exit of a wheelchair. The stall should meas-

ure at least 4 feet square, and its opening should be at least 36 inches wide. Install the control valves and showerheads at two different heights, or include a hand-held nozzle that can be used from a seated position. A built-in seat in the shower, along with a sturdy grab bar, can provide extra comfort and utility. The National Kitchen & Bath Association

provides a list of access standards to NKBA designers to make bathrooms more easily usable by the physically disabled: First, consider access. Typically, bathroom doors are 2 to 2 1/2 feet wide and are hinged to open into the room. But such a door is too narrow for a wheelchair, and its inward swing makes it difficult for a wheelchair user to maneuver inside the room. A 3-foot-wide replacement door that is designed to swing outward will ease access and keep the bathroom’s floor area clear. Second, the floor surface should be of a slip-resistant material. There are many ceramic floor tiles available with roughened finishes that will provide sure footing for those on crutches without impeding wheelchairs. The strips or moldings, called thresholds, that cover transitions between different floor materials should be kept as low and seamless as possible so wheelchairs have a smooth, level path into the room. Finally, grab bars should be installed on the side of the tub and toilet. Since the bars may have to support a person’s full weight, they must be securely screwed.

Tips for PV owners, future buyers acific Islands Construction believes that there are many issues regarding the solar industry that the consumer should understand before and after he or she makes an investment in a photovoltaic (PV) system. The following information is provided to help educate the consumer: All photovoltaic systems need to be maintained and inspected yearly to prevent expensive repairs down the road. Having your system inspected will reveal issues such as loose electrical cable, modules that are not secured to the racking system, roof flashings in need of attention to prevent leaks and inverter problems. Modules also should be clear of various deposits on surfaces that cause depreciation in energy performance. The company has recently observed projects where clamps have become loose and modules have a layer of dirt, which blocks light and reduces the energy the module is able to produce. Unfortunately, without this inspection, homeowners are unaware that their system is underperforming or in need of attention. Pacific Islands Construction performs these inspections and cleanings as a standard service to its clients. Simply call 841-7756. Because of tax credit clarifications from the state of Hawaii, many people are concerned that they may have missed the boat to have a PV system installed on their home or business. The truth is that this is not the situation, and Pacific Islands Construction has created ways for you to

take advantage of these tax credits. One way to get solar power for your home is with a PPA, or Power Purchase Agreement. With PPAs, someone else installs a PV system on your home at no cost to you, and you agree to buy the power it produces at a greatly reduced price from what you normally pay HECO. In this 20-year agreement, the equipment is maintained throughout the duration of the agreement with an option for the home-

owner to purchase the equipment after seven years at fair market value. The advantage of the agreement is that you only pay for the electricity that is produced, and it is advantageous for the provider to maintain his or her equipment. If you decide to purchase the equipment, you will have an understanding of what the system really produces on average, and what it will produce in subsequent years. Finally, the savings on your electricity bill can be used for

other purchases or saved to use towards the purchase price of the system. Pacific Islands Construction believes that it is our responsibility to provide what is right for our customers. It provides options inclusive of purchase, leasing and a PPA. The company can be reached at 841-7756 if you are interested in discussing your PV needs. AMERICAN CARPET ONE

Keeping up with the Karndean flooring line W

hile luxury vinyl tile products are quickly gaining popularity as a flooring option, Karndean offers a one-of-a-kind model that boasts ease of installation, simple maintenance and a look that rivals most solid wood floors. American Carpet One is proud to feature Karndean LooseLay luxury vinyl tile, a product that offers a quick and easy installation without the expense and mess of glue-down alternatives. The flooring system is suitable for both residential and commercial applications, and utilizes a plasticized backing that creates a bond with friction, which eliminates the need for any adhesive. The Karndean flooring planks are much thicker and wider than competing products, making for more stability and a quieter sound when walked upon. “It’s much more easily done for do-ityourself installers, and much less expensive to install,” said Danette Hoe, Sales Trainer and Flooring Specialist at American Carpet One. “The backing of the plank creates a bond with the subfloor, and when you push

the planks together, they actually create suction, which allows them to grab one another without shifting around. And, you’re still able to mop and clean the floor without worrying about dirt falling in between the planks.” The product was recently selected as one of Building Magazine’s top money-saving products and was featured on the Today Show. Karndean is referred to as the “Perfect Floor,” stemming from its ease of installation and maintenance while still providing home and business owners with the look of a solid wood floor. Hoe explained that most people are originally drawn to wood flooring because of its natural beauty, but are soon disappointed by constant care and upkeep associated with maintaining the floor. “Karndean really does fall into that ‘Perfect Floor’ category because the product allows you to live on it,” Hoe said. The LooseLay vinyl tiles come in six different colors and styles that replicate the look of wood, and four additional tile colors. Hoe explained that installers can get

Because there’s no glue involved, the tiles can be picked up and reapplied to ensure that the installation pattern is to one’s liking. “Another great application for it is when you need to have access to the subfloor, such as an enclosed patio with an exposed drain, or commercially, if there are exposed wires or storage under a false floor,” said Hoe of the LooseLay product’s versatility. “This allows you to put something down and pick it back up.” The Karndean vinyl tiles also make it easy for both contractors and do-it-yourselfers to install over an existing hard surface, including vinyl, linoleum and tile. The LooseLay tiles also come with a limited life28 • DECEMBER 9, 2012

time warranty for residential applications and a 10-year warranty on commercial jobs. Hoe also explained that the flooring option adapts well to Hawaii’s humid climate, and is more dimensionally stable as opposed to laminate or wood that tends to ripple or buckle as the air causes it to expand and contract.
