Cooking up a clean house for Thanksgiving

Shake up the ingredients in a spray bottle. Spray directly on the stain and let it sit for several minutes before scrubbing with a stiff brush.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner 1 cup vinegar 1/4 cup baking soda Dump the mixture into the basin and let it sit for several minutes before scrubbing. Flush after scrubbing to rinse.

previously used disinfecting wipes to clean everything in the house, but after a while I noticed something: For certain materials like wood and glass, the wipes left streak marks on them. It turns out that just like handiwork, where you need the right tool for the right job, cleaning also requires using the right products for the right materials. So one day, about halfway through a cleanup, I realized two things: one, I needed wood polish; and two, I didn’t want to run to the store to get it. Instead, I looked up a recipe online, and I’ve been using it ever since.

I

it. You can do it, too. Here are some of my favorite “recipes” I’ll be using this week:

Using this list to save a trip to the store will help me big time this year. Thanksgiving is just days away, and I couldn’t be more unprepared. At this time last year, I had recipes ready, food bought, party games planned (Minute to Win It games are a big hit) and the house spick and span. While I still need to run to the market and plan some games, at least I know I have all the cleaning supplies I need. Best of all, I know that this time they won’t leave streaks on my coffee table.

Wood Polish 3 parts lemon juice 1 part olive oil Now, I make most of my cleaning products — for several reasons. I already have most of the ingredients on hand, so they eliminate the need to run out to the store when I’m elbow-deep into a cleaning session, and they save money. Plus, they are non-toxic, so I feel a little better eating off the counter when a crumb or two falls on

HAWAII HOME EXPO AND APC HAWAII INC.

A match made in heaven for all of your remodeling needs T.

Oki Trading Ltd.’s family of companies is now conveniently located in one place — on a 1-acre property near Honolulu International Airport. APC Hawaii Inc. has joined Hawaii Home Expo, which you all have come to know as the merger of our businesses, Marblehaus Hawaii and T. Oki Trading. Few people realize that over the past 31 years, T. Oki Trading has transformed its original business — distributing galvanized copper, stainless sheet metal and HVAC-related materials to the major sheet metal and mechanical contractors on the islands — into one of Hawaii’s largest locally and independently owned retailers/wholesalers of home and commercial property improvement products. The company’s products include natural stone, porcelain and countertop selections; Jacuzzi Hot Tubs, Tidal Fit Swim Spas, toilets, bathtubs, fixtures, kitchen cabinets and appliances; energy saving product lines such as Photo Voltaic Systems and LED lighting; and T.Oki Trading also is an authorized agent of custom prepackaged homes by Linwood. Now with APC Hawaii joining the company in one convenient location, contractors and the general public can shop for a variety of other products from collated or bulk nails to staples and brads. Other product lines sold in bulk are pallet wrap, bubble wrap, masking/packing tape, craft paper, janitorial paper products and various types of bailing

wire and steel strapping. Contractors who might be in need of repairing their pneumatic tools can drop them off at APC Hawaii to be serviced. Over the years, the family of companies has constantly expanded its selection of innovative, high-quality products to create a synergistic shopping experience for homeowners and contractors. For instance, if you are considering installing a Jacuzzi Hot Tub or Swim Spa, you may want to enhance that particular area with some unique quartzite stone. Not only is quartzite beautiful, but it’s so durable that the company has supplied high-traffic areas with this same stone in a major portion of Waikiki’s sidewalks, Ala Moana Center as well as many hotels across the Islands. If you are thinking of remodeling your home or a section of it, in-house designers can assist you with designs and choosing from a wide selection of products to suit your style and needs. You can also stop by APC Hawaii to buy a box of plastic wrap or sheeting to protect your belongings while your home is undergoing its renovation. Its PV team is on-site to answer any questions you may have regarding energy and tax savings as well as installation. The company has many other product specialists on-site who can work with your contractor while making your renovation a pleasant experience. Different spaces for different paces With multigenerational living trends on the rise, these kitchen design tips will accommodate every family member’s needs arents are moving in with their adult children. College grads are coming home to Mom and Dad. Siblings are moving in with one another after a home foreclosure. Across America, the need for home design that supports multi-generational living is on the rise. In 2008, an estimated 49 million Americans, or about 16 percent of the total U.S. population, lived in a family household that contained at least two adult generations or a grandparent and at least one other generation, according to the Pew Research Center. And, trends show this will continue. “Factors such as job losses, home foreclosures and a changing attitude toward multigenerational living have all contributed to the rise,” said Sarah Reep, director of designer relations and education at KraftMaid Cabinetry. “Now families are finding relatives at both ends of the age spectrum living together under one roof.” As the number of multigenerational homes grows, homeowners will need to adapt to the changing landscape. Reep recommended the following kitchen design elements to create a home designed for all ages:

P

1. Get creative with lighting. Different tasks and generations require various levels of lighting. A combination of recessed, pendant and under-cabinet lighting provides both aesthetics and functionality. Adding dimmer switches is a

I

way to add even more flexibility.

counters for cutting vegetables.

2. Add a splash of color. While monochromatic color schemes have been popular in recent years, older generations may prefer contrast between countertops and cabinets in order to maximize visual acuity.

4. Install the right hardware. Older or smaller hands may have trouble grasping or pulling certain types of cabinetry hardware. Consider larger drawer and cabinet pulls that are easier to grasp and more ergonomically friendly, such as the Tapered Bow Collection from KraftMaid Cabinetry.

3. Vary countertop heights. Lowered counters will create a workspace for small children, wheelchair users and those who prefer to sit while preparing meals. Homeowners can also use the varied heights for different tasks, such as lower counters for kneading dough and higher

5. Keep counters clutter-free. There’s a common theme when it comes to kitchen cabinetry accessories — more storage in a clean design style. Creative storage solutions like a wall appliance garage and pull-

out cabinets keep must-have items always within reach. “Living in a multi-generational home can be a great experience, but it can also be very challenging,” said Reep. “It’s important to take each generation’s ideas and needs into consideration, especially when it comes to home design.”

Baby boomers dominate latest housing trends BY KAREN NAKAMURA

he largest American generation is either retired or quickly nearing retirement age. Baby boomers, the generation born between 1946 and 1964 and who count more than 76 million, may be getting older, but they are definitely not ready to head to the retirement home! The boomer generation is more active than generations past, has a more sophisticated style and wants options for their homes. Some features that home builders and remodelers are seeing as they begin to cater to the boomers include:

T

Home offices Some boomers are choosing to work past the age of 65. As they transition from a traditional 9-to-5 job, however, they want home offices for flexibility. A second career or part-time employment often eliminates the hassle of commuting while keeping them active and bringing in supplementary income.

Tech/media centers The tech-savvy boomer generation wants top-of-the-line amenities such as a media room with surround sound and central control systems, which manage all media sources in one location. Wider doors and hallways Designing a home that is livable now but can transition and be functional as the occupant ages is important in ensuring that the home will be a good longterm investment.

downstairs, a 15 percent increase from over a decade ago. Boomers not wishing to go up and down stairs with bad knees and aching backs have helped fuel this trend.

Better lighting/bigger windows The need for more lighting usually increases as we grow older. To accommodate this, builders are adding more windows and making them larger to let in more natural light.

Boosting your home’s curb appeal for a quicker sale S

elling a home in today’s market requires a bit of marketing, some sweat and elbow grease and a touch of luck. But even in a competitive selling market, it is possible to turn the sign in your front yard from “For Sale” to “Sold” so you can move on to your next residence. First, look at your home as if you were a potential buyer. Drive up to the driveway or the front curb and park, carefully looking at the home as if for the first time. Make note of the beautiful aspects of your home, and also areas that could deter potential buyers. The outside of your home is the first image they will see, both in person, and while pre-shopping online. One maintenance project to tackle that will really spruce up the exterior of your home is refurbishing the outside woodwork that has been weathered by the sun and rain. If you have a front porch, wooden window edgings or even a back deck, chances are these areas could benefit from new stain for a refreshed and clean look. Home decks return about 70 percent of their original cost back to homeowners when a house is sold, according to Remodeling Magazine’s annual Cost vs.Value Report, but that’s only when the decks are kept in top shape. To remove mois-

ture and sun damage, and protect your exterior woodwork from further damage from moss, mold and rot, Flood wood care offers an entire wood care system from prepping materials such as deck cleaners to stain. Before prepping your deck, consider if you need Wood Finish Remover to remove latex, oil, semi-transparent and solid stains, or if your deck is unstained, you may need Wood Brightener/Cleaner to bring the old and faded gray coloring back to a fresh new wood appearance. Finally, apply a Flood wood stain to your deck and woodwork to give it a beautiful look that will have home buyers and your neighbors impressed. In addition to your exterior woodwork, also take a look at your siding and gutters. Vinyl and aluminum sidings can collect dirt and look dingy after a season or two. Use a power washer on the siding and gutters to wash away the grime and spider webs and bring some vibrancy back to the outside of your home. Also consider adding season-appropriate flowers, plants or landscaping, or replacing gutter downspouts with decorative chains to give your home an artistic look. Finally, take a close look at your exterior lights. Glassenclosed lights can become filthy from all the elements, so take

a quick moment to wipe them clean with glass cleaner. If your light fixtures are tarnished or looking run down, purchase a can of spray paint in any complimentary color to the exterior of your home and freshen them up. These quick-fix projects will boost the look of your home both for prospective buyers arriving at your front door, and also in the photographs visible online. With this better exterior appearance, chances are you’ll be able to sell your home much quicker. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

Let there be light at home for the holidays W hen it comes to decorating with lights for the holidays, there are unlimited ways to add twinkle to the inside as well as the outside of your home. Some people favor an elegant, restrained sprinkling of lights around a door, while others go for a more exuberant display of illumination on virtually every surface. The American Lighting Association (ALA) offers some holiday lighting tips and ideas:

a button without changing the fixture, making these products useful year round.

• Make your home’s entrance a priority. The front door is more than just the entryway into your home; it’s also a welcoming first impression for family and friends. Start by adding a few, easy-to-install landscape uplights to highlight trees and shrubs, or path lighting to illuminate a sidewalk or driveway.

• Illuminate corners. When decorating with lights for the holidays, make your space feel larger by placing spotlights in room corners to illuminate dark spaces.

• Add drama with color-changing lights. Newer LED lights can add custom color scenes that complement a specific holiday decorating mood. You can produce the exact ambiance you like at any moment during your party or gathering this season. Colors can be changed at the push of

• Use lighting to create a focal point. Lights can draw attention to virtually anything — a centerpiece, buffet, unusual decoration — which helps guests know where to focus their eyes.

• Swap out lighting accents. Replacing a neutral lampshade with one that is red or gold will soften the light and create a pretty atmosphere when decorating with lights for the holidays. For information, visit www.AmericanLightingAssoc.com. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

ENERGYPRO HAWAII

End the year with a photovoltaic system A

s 2012 is starting to wind down, Oahu residents are in a mad dash to have their future photovoltaic (PV) systems installed. Getting them installed within the calendar year is crucial in order to take advantage of the state tax credit program that could be revised or reduced in 2013. Why should this matter to you as a consumer? Many PV companies have been or are very close to being booked throughout the end of the year. This leaves only a few choices to find a quality installer at a reasonable price.

Although the time crunch is on for consumers, they should not rush into any decision or choose the first available installer. Installing a PV system is a major decision and careful research and planning should still be implemented when deciding on a PV installer. You want to be sure the installer can deliver on his or her promised date, will provide you with quality installation and also provide you with the best PV panels and equipment. EnergyPro Hawaii is now fully stocked with 260-watt panels that are matched with Enphase’s M215 microinverters. Its

ENERGYPRO HAWAII contact // 596-2890 web // www.energyprohawaii.com energyprohawaii@gmail.com install crews have not been hired just for this busy season, but have been welltrained and employed with the company for an extended period of time. EnergyPro Hawaii wants to ensure you receive the highest quality work possible and that your installation is done right. As of now, EnergyPro Hawaii still has openings available to install PV systems in 2012, but time is running out. And with added obstacles — such as community association approvals, possible re-roofing and financing options — the process can sometimes be unexpectedly prolonged. Currently EnergyPro Hawaii has some

year-end specials as well as a new zero down, 0 percent interest for two years financing program for qualified buyers. This program is offered through select installers on Oahu, so call today to take advantage of this fantastic program. In addition to PV systems, EnergyPro Hawaii also offers a wide variety of products and services, including solar hot water systems, solar attic fans and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. HONSADOR LUMBER

NOVEMBER 18 • 2012 11

You can count on these cabinets

slander Cabinetry is an exclusive brand of kitchen and bath cabinetry, designed and imported by Honsador Lumber for island living. Islander Cabinetry is available from island inventories and comes in different door styles, stain finishes and three hardwood species. The line is 6 years old and has met with incredible success because of its quality and availability from robust inventories. The entry-level cabinet is the Oak Hardwood species in a distinctive raisedpanel door style with a medium stain finish. The mid-level cabinet features a raised-panel Birch hardwood species and natural finish. Additional choices are available in the slightly higher priced Shaker style in both natural and Cherry finishes. On the higher end of the spectrum sits the Kamalani product, which is made from genuine Walnut species and a modest raised-panel door style.

I

All Islander Cabinetry is constructed using 5/8-inch-thick Hardwood plywood. There is no particle board in the Islander product line. Cabinets feature a strong face frame design in Mortise and Tenon construction. The quality features continue to the adjustable and concealed chrome hinges that open beyond 90 degrees for easy

access to cabinet interiors. Drawer slides are heavy duty and come in either standard or soft-close function. Dovetail is standard. Shelving is constructed from sturdy 3/4-inch hardwood plywood with finished edging. Cabinets are completely assembled and ready for easy installation. Quality was a major concern, and the only way you can guarantee seamless quality is to have careful inspection of all the parts that go into each cabinet. That’s how “Quality Touch” was born. Every part is looked at and accepted. The last and most important part of our “Quality Touch” program is for every cabinet to be fumigated, to rid all parts of insects such as termites and beetles. Insects could cause serious, unnoticed damage months after installation, when it’s too late

and the damage has been done to the cabinets and perhaps further into the home. Islander Cabinetry was created to close the gap between domestic and marginal imported cabinets. Many imported brands have left out certain features that are usually found in domestic (U.S.-produced) cabinetry. Imported brands tend to have thinner cabinet sides, thin shelves that can sag under use, poorly constructed drawer boxes and lightweight drawer slides. There are no short cuts and weak materials used at Islander Cabinetry. Islander is truly a high-value, affordable cabinet. Please compare the quality of all aspects of your cabinetry. Ask about Islander flooring and Islander Granite, two great companion products to round out the family of Islander products.

Put your house in order Don’t shut the door on your mess! Create an energetic pathway of environmental support in your home by clearing the clutter and letting go of dated belongings

with

Alice Inoue QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I loved reading the stories about a few of your consultations last month and learned so much. Can you share more? f course! I too have learned so much from doing consultations over the years and am constantly amazed at the direct correlation the environment has to our lives. The more conscious we are about the links between our own environment and our lives, the more aware we become of how the choices we make in our homes affect our lives and vice versa. Here are additional consultation stories you may enjoy and learn something from. For confidentiality reasons, I have changed the names of the people and created different situational scenarios. Any similarity to you or someone you know is purely coincidental.

O

The weight of the past A friend of mine in the construction business called me one day and asked if I could take a look at a home he was renovating. He said the man who lived there needed some “help” and had agreed to my consultation. I have been to many homes and seen some unusual things inside them, but what was happening in Louis’ home was a first for me. Already in his 50s, Louis lived alone and had a lot of clutter, which was not unusual. What was unusual was the type of clutter he accumulated. Throughout the house were stacks of newspapers and magazines dating from the 1970s to the present. He had prescription medication bottles with expired dates in the 80s and unopened canned goods more than 20 years old. Not surprisingly, Louis’ conversations all revolved around the past — when life and health were “good,” before his kids moved away and before he was demoted at work. He had nothing positive to say about the

present and would not let go of the fantasy that the past was better. His environment fully reflected that he was unwilling to move forward. The lesson here is that dated material more strongly ties us to the past. Living in the present means embracing what life has to offer now. So ask yourself: Is it time to let go of expired goods, medications and old magazines? Private challenges show up at home Cynthia initially hired me for a consultation because she wanted less worry, better sleep, and more peace, health, harmony and happiness — the usual things. As we walked around her three-bedroom home, where she lived with her husband and daughters, I saw nothing out of the ordinary. I asked her if she was looking for anything specific, and she said that her family was dealing with some major challenges that she wanted to keep private. She was hoping that my advice would help her solve some of the issues. The home had a great feel and was obviously well kept — no excess dust, nothing

unkempt, no visible clutter. Cynthia showed me her kitchen, living room, daughter’s bedroom and the master bedroom. She then walked by the third bedroom. When I asked her about it, she said, “Oh, that room just has my daughter’s pets. You can ignore that one.” “Hmmm,” I thought. When it was time for me to assess the property, I peeked into that room. I actually had to blink my eyes to see if what I thought I saw was actually there. In stark contrast to the rest of the house, the room had sheets of newspaper scattered everywhere and days-old rabbit and guinea pig feces. The pets were given free rein of the room. The correlation was obvious to me in light of what Cynthia had just shared. My advice was to focus on that room. Although it may seem easier to keep the door closed and pretend that the mess doesn’t exist, the reality is that it does. Cynthia could create an intent to heal while creating an energetic path toward supporting the private challenges her family was facing by having the room organized, getting proper caging for the pets and cleaning up the existing mess. The lesson here is though it may not be so obvious or as extreme in your home as it was in Cynthia’s, ask yourself where you have “closed the door,” pretending that a mess does not exist. Is there something you need to address, something you’ve put on the back burner, hoping it will eventually work itself out? If so, schedule a time to physically organize your mess, even if only for an hour. You will be amazed at how it will help unlock things and usher you forward with solutions and options. Use your environment for support You don’t have to know feng shui to make an energetic difference. Whether you feel stuck, overwhelmed, anxious or sad, do something in your home, no matter how

small, and it will physically bring order to your space and support change in other areas of your life.

Making your abode smarter, more efficient T

he holidays can be the busiest time of the year. With entertaining and overnight guests, it can be hard to ensure your home systems are performing for optimal comfort and efficiency. Thanks to new home automation technologies, you can run your home in a smarter and more cost-effective manner than ever before — from wherever life takes you — even from a smartphone, tablet or Web connection. For example, the Nexia™ Home Intelligence system from Trane® and Schlage® allows you to remotely manage multiple systems throughout your home, including heating and cooling, door locks, video surveillance, lights, shades and energy usage via any Web-enabled computer and most smartphones. Designed for today’s mobile lifestyles, it helps you make everything in your home speak one simple lan-

guage. Visit www.nexiahome.com for more information. Such technologies are growing rapidly in popularity as they become more affordable and easier to use. According to ABI Research, the number of home automation systems sold in North America is expected to grow to about 6 million by 2016, a sixfold increase since 2011. Smart temperature control for better comfort Comfort and efficiency starts with smart temperature control for many homeowners. Picking up relatives at the airport? Turn on the air conditioning in the guest bedroom from your smartphone while waiting at the baggage claim. Does one of your guests have allergies? Activate your system’s allergy clean cycle to temporarily boost air filtration and clean air output.

For example, the Trane ComfortLink II Control works as an up-to-the-minute weather station inside your home. It can provide you with access to weather information, temperature control and air quality from afar via your smartphone, computer or tablet. In addition, you can create automated cooling schedules to save

energy while no one is home, an added advantage if you’re trying to better control utility costs. Visit www.trane.com for more information.

help keep your property secure while you’re away. Planning a weekend at your second home during the holidays? Technology can help you monitor and manage security at your primary home while you’re gone. Need to let a pet sitter inside while you’re on vacation, or open a locked door for a family member who lost a key? Now you can. Schlage, for instance, offers indoor and outdoor cameras that let you view activity around the home or yard. It also offers keypad deadbolts and levers that let you grant access to your home via scheduled codes when you’re not there. You can even receive a text or email alert when there is activity around the home, for greater peace of mind.

How to choose the right home automation system Home automation is a hot topic, not just among the technologically savvy crowd and remodeling enthusiasts, but also among increasing numbers of mainstream homeowners. From setting the alarm via smartphone to turning on lights automatically and programming the air conditioning, technology brings enhanced convenience, comfort and safety for consumers where they need it most — at home. Many homeowners have already taken advantage of this technology, and more are joining the ranks every day. Homeowners who are planning to make the switch to an automated or smart home should consider three factors:

rity companies within their area that are members of ESA. They should ask each company the following questions: • How long has the company been in business? • Can you provide references for previous work? • Are your employees licensed to work on different systems (air conditioning, lighting)?

• What system features are important Smart connectivity to fit your lifestyle When it comes to home automation systems, you can often pick and choose which devices you wish to control, for smart and efficient use of your budget, too. For example Nexia userspay a monthly subscription fee and then select from up to 200 different devices that can be purchased separately or bundled together, making it easy to expand the level of control as lifestyle needs change.

• Who is qualified to install the system

• If your employees don’t have the required licenses, with which companies do you subcontract to do the work?

• How to select the right company for the job John Knox, who serves as president of the Electronic Security Association (ESA), said homeowners should pay special attention to the systems and providers they choose to automate their homes. On Alarm.org, homeowners can find a list of trusted secu-

CATHY LEE

Soft around the edge Having a cool, urban design scheme doesn’t mean your space has to feel “cold.” Layering in textures and accent pieces will warm up any contemporary look

ast week I showed you photos from the model apartment at 680 Ala Moana that I staged for Kamehameha Schools. My goal was a decorating style that was urban and edgy, to reflect the surrounding Kakaako neighborhood. To help you create that same vibe, I gave you tips on using urban colors like charcoals, browns, taupes and creams, going planet-friendly in your material use and making dual-purposing a priority. What else do you need for a distinctive urban vibe? I’ve got a few more tips for you:

L

Mixing hard, industrial surfaces with warmer textures The one-bedroom apartment at 680 had stainless steel surfaces, concrete walls and scraped vinyl flooring. These helped set the foundation for, as well as enhance, the apartment’s urban look. If your space already has finishes like these, that’s great. If not, try to incorporate hard surfaces like metal, concrete, glass and wood (as opposed to wall-to-wall carpeting, for example, or fully upholstered furniture). If you don’t have these as part of your architecture, you can incorporate some in your furniture pieces and accessories. But urban loft spaces with lots of hard surfaces can feel cold. The trick — and this is key — is to layer in other textures to add some warmth and give your space more character. For example, at 680 we had a stainless steel kitchen with very hard, clean lines in the cabinetry. To add earthiness to this side of the room, I put some Indonesian wood carvings above the cabinet. (They also draw your eye up to the high ceiling, increasing the feeling of space in this 600-square-foot apartment.) Then I layered in a couple of stone sculptures in front of the carvings to create dimension and tie in to the cream colors of the walls. I repeated the warmth of the woods in the kitchen’s cold stainless island by placing there 16 • NOVEMBER 18, 2012

a farmers’ market crate where vegetables are easily accessible. And I repeated the wood in the console table/bookshelf I told you about last week. As I’ve said again and again, when it comes to using different materials and textures, it’s all about layering or varying them, and repeating those textures throughout the space. Spell out your point of view Urban spaces are young, fresh and contemporary. Share your point of view with art, accents or even by spelling it out! Near

the kitchen, I created a wine center that also opens up as a table space for entertaining. My touch of whimsy here: wine letters. In the bedroom, where I didn’t want to be gender-specific, I created a bed that was white and cream and charcoal with just a splash of yellow in the hot modern modern ikat print. What ties in with the yellow is also the touch that really makes this room unique and puts a smile on your face: It’s a clue about what you don’t need in a bedroom. I found a large carved picture frame, and instead of putting a picture inside, I had letters cut out that spelled NO TV.

It’s easy to find letters to create your own statement in your own space. You can get vinyl clings online or find cutout letters at almost any craft store. At 680, my goal was to stage this unit with a cool, eclectic urban vibe. Remember, keep your colors and textures urban, but don’t forget to add a bit of your personality and fun. That’s cool!

Discover the beauty of concrete flooring A

t Lokahi Garage Experts, and our parent company Lokahi Stone Inc., we have been in the business of making concrete look beautiful in Hawaii for almost a decade. From our expertise in pre-casting beautiful concrete countertops, polishing and coloring concrete floors, to the placement and finish of commercial and residential decorative concrete installations, we are the experts in the decorative concrete business. We recognize concrete as the one of the most useful and important building blocks of architecture and we treat it with reverence and pride. However, as much as we love concrete, we know that not all concrete is created equal. As a famous fictional character, Forest Gump, once described life, we like to describe concrete: “Concrete is like a box of Chocolates, because ya never know what you’re gonna get.” If you have a concrete surface that is rough and unattractive, chances are that when that surface was placed and finished, the design intention was to cover that concrete surface with another finish

material such as tile, carpet, stone, wood or a laminate flooring system. In such cases, the concrete finishers and masons use specific techniques because they know the concrete will be covered and never seen again. These skilled tradesmen also use different, higher-quality techniques when placing and finishing concrete when they know that the surface will be visible. Similarly, utility areas such as lanais, walkways, basements and garages can be problematic for appearance and function: they may be finished too roughly, making the surface hard to clean and unattractive, or they may be finished with a slick surface that can be hazardous. We all know a wet slipper on a slick concrete surface can be very dangerous. Having dealt with and repaired concrete issues such as these over the years, Lokahi Garage Experts is uniquely qualified to offer you a consultation and alternative Epoxy Products to mitigate the problems that can arise in new and existing concrete surfaces, and make those concrete surfaces both aesthetically pleasing and safe

DEEP PURPLE PAINTING

18 NOVEMBER 18 • 2012

A high-quality paint job BY KYLE GALDEIRA or Jimmy Suh, owner of Deep Purple Painting, quality is the top priority when it comes to assisting his customers with a wide range of painting projects. “I’ve been painting for 25 years, and my main goal is to produce a quality job — that’s the most important thing,” Suh said. Suh moved to Hawaii in early 2010 to be closer to family and friends, and brought his successful painting business with him to the Islands. The contractor spent nearly 20 years in San Francisco building his business and cultivating a sterling reputation for producing quality results. Whether the job involves painting a home’s exterior, or a few walls of a commercial space, Deep Purple can cover it. At the onset of each job, Suh confers with the owner to determine the necessary steps involved in refinishing the desired surfaces. The painter considers many factors, including the relationships between colors and how they compliment one another, and presents the owner with the viable options. Other aspects that Suh considers include the texture of certain surfaces, and what variety of paint will coat them in a way that both pro-

tects and beautifies for years to come. Suh has cultivated a host of positive referrals from satisfied customers — a direct result of his respect for his clients and their needs. When meeting with Suh, customers are encouraged to view the completed jobs in person in order to fully understand the stellar workmanship that goes into every Deep Purple project. After the look and feel of the project is determined, the client is presented with a written estimate of both the

cost of the job as well as a timeline detailing the work to be performed. “The mouth-to-mouth referrals that I receive come from the extensive preparation and excellent results from numerous jobs, both residential and commercial,” said Suh of many notable projects in both Hawaii and San Francisco. “That’s why people like how I do business.” Suh has honed his craft for over a quarter century, and can quickly diagnose problems

with paint jobs that have resulted in unsightly chipping and peeling. Suh explained that the tedious tasks of priming and smoothing surfaces and filling in any cracks or imperfections with quality patching materials go a long way in ensuring a paint job’s effectiveness. He stresses quality and an honest approach to customer service throughout each project he’s involved with. “A painter needs to follow the proper procedures,” Suh said. “That’s why there are so many problems here in Hawaii with painting projects. You need to prime the area, and prepare it properly. It’s worth the price for a premium paint job that’s done right the first time, saving time and money in the long run.” For more information, or to set up a consultation with Suh, call 739-2000.

NOVEMBER 18 • 2012 19

It’s time to go‘window shopping’

hen it comes to the best in window care, Discount Windows & Doors has always been at the forefront of new technological developments within the fenestration industry. In 2009, owner Jerry Griffin, who has more than 20 years of experience in the window and door industry, identified a need for a window system specifically engineered for Hawaii.Virtually every window being sold in Hawaii was designed on the Mainland, for the Mainland. The Makai Range of windows and doors was specifically developed for Hawaii using state-of-the-art technolo-

W

gy to develop a window system ideal for this environment. The first consideration for the Makai Range was a glass suitable for Hawaii — something stronger and more thermally efficient than what is currently available, and something with the ability to repel salt, minerals and organic dirt common in Hawaii. The solution was Neat® glass from Cardinal Glass Industries. The standard glass in all of the Makai windows is Cardinal Low-E 366 Neat®: Insulated self-cleaning, double-strength glass with a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of 0.27 that

reflects more than 90 percent of radiant heat, leaving your home significantly cooler. These windows can almost clean themselves, which is pretty darn “neat.” And you get all of the performance benefits of Cardinal’s Low-E glass. Neat®’s naturally clean glass harnesses the sun’s UV rays to loosen dirt so water can rinse it away, leaving windows virtually spotless. Your windows will stay cleaner longer and be easier to clean. Homeowners and builders will enjoy the effects that a little sun, rain and Neat® glass bring to windows. It all starts with the sun The titanium dioxide layer of Neat® glass reacts chemically with the sun’s UV rays to cause organic materials that are on the glass to decompose. It works even on cloudy days, as 80 percent of UV radiation gets through the cloud cover. Thus when it rains, the decomposed dirt no longer clings to the glass and easily rinses away.

DISCOUNT WINDOWS & DOORS contact // 673-6656 address // 45-564 Kamehameha Hwy. web // www.discountwindowshawaii.com

Smoother glass is cleaner glass Neat® glass is ultra smooth. A thin layer of silicon dioxide makes it exceptionally smooth and hydrophilic — much smoother than ordinary hydrophobic glass. This allows water to disperse evenly,

or “sheet off,” and evaporate quickly, greatly reducing water spotting. Easier-to-clean window glass just got better with Cardinal’s Neat® naturally clean glass. No manual activation is required, just a little help from the sun. The results are almost spotless windows, and you’ll spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying the view.

he photovoltaic market is exploding and everyone is trying to get a piece of the action. This has caused a saturation of contractors claiming they can install your PV system. The positive side to this is that homeowners have a plethora of contractors to choose from. However, the decision-making process should not be based on cost alone. Consider a contractor who is trustworthy, reputable and provides quality workmanship. Being driven by price alone can cause you lose sight of these important aspects.

Seek multiple quotes This will educate you on the general cost involved and ensure you get a fair market price. Even for homeowners who just want electrical work, All G Electric LLC always encourages them to seek multiple bids before making a decision. This allows the homeowner to meet face to face and interview more than one contractor to get each one’s perspective on how the company would approach the job. This also educates the homeowner on the construction process and can prevent the homeowner from feeling taken advantage of or “ripped off.” Be cautious of the contractor whose only concern is to give you the lowest price. The saying, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” tends to be true.

Do your research Take the time to research the contractors you are considering and their track record. Websites like the Hawaii Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Department of Commerce and Consumer

Affairs (DCCA) are good places to start. The BBB is an organization that establishes various standards that members are evaluated and rated against. Ratings are unbiased and objective. Any complaints or claims filed through BBB against the contractor can also be viewed. The DCCA is a state run division that primarily governs the following relating to businesses and/or contractors: Registration and licensing, Financial health and soundness, Complaint processing, Consumer protection and education. You can conduct a search on the contractors to see if they are actively licensed and compliant with all guidelines and requirements for running a business in the state of Hawaii.

AKAMAI ENERGY

Where going green is simple and affordable A kamai Energy is making the task of purchasing a solar system simple and affordable. A quick phone call to the company sets you up with a friendly Akamai Energy representative who will handle a short 30 minute on-site survey of your home and review your electrical needs. A verbal estimate is given on the spot, followed up with a formal written estimate within 24 hours. Akamai Energy understands that the clock is ticking and everyone is in a hurry to take advantage of 35 percent state credits and 30 percent federal tax credits before 2012 is up. To help expedite any financing needs, Akamai Energy has teamed up with one of Hawaii’s top local credit unions with 11 Oahu branches to help you get financed quickly for your solar system. To apply with an Akamai Energy solar loan program partner, all you need is your Akamai Energy contract, signed loan application, two years of tax returns and two current pay stubs for all parties applying for the loan, and you can get financed in as little as three to four business days.

AKAMAI ENERGY contact // 445-9119 web // www.akamaienergyhawaii.com Going green can be expensive, and that’s why Akamai Energy has the most competitive pricing program on the market for top-of-the-line Solar World 255 Americanmade panels featuring 25-year warranties on both panels and micro inverters as well as a 10-year installation warranty. ALUMINUM SHAKE ROOFING INC.

NOVEMBER 18 • 2012 23

Beauty meets durability with Country Manor Shake roofing O ne of Hawaii’s best looking roofs, installed locally by Aluminum Shake Roofing Inc, is the Country Manor Shake (CMS) system. The CMS roof system was developed by Alcoa in 1974 and is currently manufactured in Ohio by Classic Products. You get the look of hand-split cedar shakes without the drawbacks. It may be the coolest, most lightweight and longest-lasting roof on the market, but will it last for 40 years or more? See for yourself. The pictures on this page show some of hundreds of CMS roofs that were installed at least 20 years ago. They all still look beautiful and continue to keep the weather out. Conventional asphalt composition shingle roofs need to be replaced every 15 years on average. If you travel around Oahu and look for the oldest roofs in the most mature neighborhoods, you will find countless examples of old Alumalock aluminum shingle roofs that are 40, 50, even 60 years old, and are going strong with no signs of deterioration other than a paint coating that may have eroded away. While those roofs still look great, the

ALUMINUM SHAKE ROOFING INC.

contact // 847-8885 web // www.aluminumshakeroofing.net

engineering of the CMS system is a huge improvement over shingles. With the help of advancements in coil-coating technology, Country Manor Shake switched to ovenbaked Kynar 500-based coatings in the mid 1990s. Now the cool, infrared reflecting finish has unsurpassed results in exposure to tropical sun, salt air and sand abrasion. Even

after an aggressive acid testing, the finish was unaffected. Call Fred Rehm at Aluminum Shake Roofing for a free, clear and detailed written estimate. He’ll come out, measure your roof and explain everything you want to know about installing a new lifetime roof on your home.

Out of respect and appreciation for the men and women who have served in the U. S. Armed Forces to protect our freedom, Classic Products is offering a $500 rebate for roofs (minimum 2,000 square feet) signed during November. Aluminum Shake Roofing Inc. will match the offer.

For those who may not want a Christmas tree, Kalama suggested using a bamboo trellis to display your favorite ornaments, with a bamboo bench in front for your gifts. “Be creative,” said Kalama. “Do what works for your home. Affordable Plumbing

‘Pocket’ doors bring a whole lot of elegance to entryways A dd a dash of charm to any room or entryway. Install a door-in-the-wall with a Pocket Door Frame. A pocket door can be installed in any room of your home. They’re especially convenient for walk-in closets, bathrooms, powder rooms, bedrooms, between a kitchen and dining room or in doorways that only need to be closed occasionally. The Johnson Pocket Door Frame is designed to eliminate the problems traditionally associated with a door-inthe-wall. The product has a boxshaped track and convex rails, which make it impossible for the hanger wheels to jump off. Special key hole slots allow you to remove the track easily without tearing out a wall. There’s a unique hanger-clip system that enables you to remove the door

for painting or staining after the drywall and trim are in place. The pocket door frame also has self-adjusting anchors to allow for settling without disturbing the horizontal alignment of the header and track. To keep the frame straight and provide a rigid surface for attaching wall materials, the Johnson pocket door frame is equipped with rust-resistant, zinc-coated steel sides and back plating. This also helps prevent drywall nails from penetrating the stud and scratching the pocket door. You can put in a pocket door frame with basic hand tools. Make it easy on yourself and get a ready-to-install product like the Johnson Hardware model, which comes with all hardware components, including a preassembled track and header. All you supply is the door.

A carpenter can install the pocket door frame in about 10 minutes. Figure a little more time for a handyman. Accessories include a converging door kit for joining two pocket door frames, doors pulls and privacy locks. The privacy locks fit standard pre-bored doors. You can install them without cutting the door and invalidating the manufacturer’s warranty. For more information on how to add more zip to your entryway recipes with Pocket Door Frames, visit johnsonhardware.com or follow the company on Twitter at twitter.com /johnsonhrdware.

Get acquainted with the most innovative home appliances S ervco Home & Appliance has provided Hawaii residents with the latest premium appliances while offering superior customer and delivery services. In order to ensure that the newest product innovations are available to you, Servco works closely with representatives from brands such as GE, Thermador, Bosch and Gaggenau. There have been many new product introductions this year and they are now on display at Servco’s showroom. One of the most recent introductions is GE’s next generation French Door Refrigerator. It is made-in-America and Energy Star-qualified, which means it saves energy and money. It also includes a hands-free auto fill that lets you walk away while the dispenser automatically fills your container, and TwinChill Evaporators that separate climates in the fresh food and freezer sections to help keep food fresher longer. With refrigerators as large as 29 cubic feet, there is plenty of room to store everything your family needs. GE also recently came out with the 28 • NOVEMBER 18, 2012

next generation of GeoSpring Hybrid Water Heaters, which save you approximately $980 a year on utility bills and reduce water heating expenses by up to 62 percent, according to Department of Energy testing. This appliance, like the French Door Refrigerator, is also made-inAmerica and Energy Star-qualified. Not only does it come with a limited 10-year warranty, it also is eligible for an up to $200 rebate from Hawaii Energy. GE has introduced the newest color in the appliance world. GE appliances with the new “Slate” finish are now available at Servco’s appliance retailers. Slate is a one-of-a-kind, low-gloss finish that resists fingerprints and complements a wide spectrum of countertops, floors and cabinetry finishes, making it extremely easy to match. It is stunningly versatile, and it available on refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers and microwaves. You can see these items on display at Servco’s showroom in Mapunapuna. Servco also has the most anticipated appliance of the year, the Freedom

Induction Cooktop, on display in its showroom. This 36 inch wide unit is the first full-surface induction appliance that intelligently recognizes cookware size, shape and position to deliver heat without boundaries. It is built with 48 individual 3inch induction-heating elements and offers one limitless cooking surface with an intuitive touch-screen interface. Thermador offers exceptional cooking performance regardless of cooktop preference. Its 30-inch and 36-inch gas cooktops have been rated No. 1 by leading consumer magazines, and the brand has also made improvements to its already No. 1-rated wall ovens. Thermador wall ovens currently have the largest cavity and fastest preheat and self-cleaning times in the luxury segment. New Thermador ovens are now made with SoftClose Doors and SoftClose Warming Drawers on triple combination units, which make them the only oven in the industry with this unique feature. Thermador also has improved the design of its ovens by making the full-

depth manifold, temperature gauges, knobs and clocks all stainless steel. Its new ovens offer true convection and telescopic racks, which have thicker wires and wrap around tines with handles. Another great addition to Thermador’s ovens is its new Masterpiece Series Steam and Convection Oven with professional handles. This oven offers passionate cooks the ultimate cooking flexibility with 40 EasyCook food programs and steam convection, which provides unrivaled food taste and quality.
