our bed, the only piece of furniture intimately connected to your personal energy, is the most important piece of furniture in your home from a feng shui standpoint. It should make you feel safe enough to completely let go of the day’s challenges and open yourself up to renewal through rest and intimacy with your partner. You cannot overestimate the feng shui of your bed with respect to your well-being and the quality of your relationships. You are most vulnerable when

sleeping in your bed, so it should support you in every way.

Three points for a desirable bed Three structural details qualify a bed as feng shui positive: • Good height. The bedframe must be raised to a comfortable height to allow for circulation and flow of energy above, below and around it. A bedframe that is too high off the floor can emphasize feelings of insecurity, while one that is too low to

the floor can keep you “grounded” in difficult situations for long periods of time. • Good headboard. Subconsciously, your head needs protection and support. A headboard supports you in the same way the back on a chair offers support when you sit for long periods of time. Wood or upholstered headboards are favored over iron or metal. If you have no headboard, place your bed against a wall, not under a window, for a greater

sense of stability. Place a picture of a mountain above your bed to further the energy of safety and stability. • Good mattress. Buy a mattress you love. The more comfortable the mattress, the better you sleep at night and the better you feel during the day. In the case of some beds, like the California King, the box spring should be in one piece, not two, representing unity between the partners or between the parts of oneself.

the new cabinets will be placed. The best way to measure a wall is from one corner to the opposite end. It is always helpful to have someone else hold one end of the measuring tape when measuring large areas. Next, measure the ceiling height, starting from the floor. Measuring the ceiling height will deter-

mine the general height of the wall cabinets for proper counter space. Sometimes there are spaces that will make taking accurate measurements difficult. In these situations, it is better to round down to the nearest inch rather than round up. Cabinets for a kitchen design with measurements rounded

down will be sure to fit; the extra space can always be hidden with a filler piece. Whereas when rounded up, a whole cabinet may have to be changed to a smaller size to fit.

ou have to have been living in a cave for the last year or two to not know that mortgage interest rates are at a record low. Unlike the majority of floor coverings, the right wood floor can be something that lasts a lifetime and beyond. Cabinets, tile, bath fixtures, carpeting, windows, roofs, paint — they all need to be re-done in a number of years, due to wear and tear or aesthetics. But a classic wood floor, with proper maintenance, will last the lifetime of the house or

beyond. Statistically speaking, many types of wood flooring, even with resanding, can last 80 to 100 years. So let’s start by asking what are the basic types of wood flooring most commonly used in Hawaii? The most traditional form of wood flooring is called unfinished solid. This is a solid piece of wood that’s been milled into flooring, and will be sanded and coated in your home after it has been nailed down. It’s generally considered the most “high-end” of wood floors due to the ability to customize the end product, but also due to higher installation cost (man must do what the finishing machine usually would in a factory). Next on the scene, we have pre-finished solids. This is again a solid piece of flooring, but the sanding and coating is done at the factory using sophisticated methods, such as UV curing, and the only work done in your home is to nail or glue it down. Your floor is ready to live on almost the minute it goes down. And most recently, there is engineered wood flooring, such as the Kahala Floors line. Engineered flooring involves taking a precisely cut slice of the flooring wood and pre-installing it onto plywood. Contrary to popular assumption, this is not done to be stingy on the wood! Rather, it is done to provide a more versatile, stable form of wood flooring. Engineered woods can be installed below grade (whereas solids cannot) and they can also be floated (whereas solids must be nailed or glued down). Most engineered flooring is

sanded and pre-finished in a factory, and with the right brand of engineered, you are looking at a lifetime product that can be refinished several times, just like a solid.
