JOANNE ROMERO

Go to Work at Home You can put your organizational skills and great work ethic to good use by turning any nook at home into a functional workspace

n 2012, I made the resolution to attend at least two shows and go sailing. I exceeded my goals by attending three and sailing twice. The year before, I resolved to take at least 10 pictures per week and averaged 15 to 20. I guess I have a tendency to set goals I can surpass. Resolutions always work best when they are attainable. For me, this means they often come with a number. This year, I’m going to start with my workspace. As a graduate student and a writer, I spend most of my time here, so it’s not a bad place to start. The good news about a home workspace is that you don’t need an entire room to have one.You can set up a workstation in the kitchen or even in the nook of your living room. Determine the size and type of desk you’ll need. Mine is a small space in the corner of

I

the room, so I’ve opted for a corner desk with multiple shelves stacked vertically. Tables also substitute as great desks. Just make sure there is enough space above and below for any necessary items like a filing cabinet. After this, create a filing system. For years,

I’ve depended on a couple of filing boxes from Ikea. This year, I’m resolving to change it up.The boxes are stuffed to the brim and starting to fall apart. Now, I’m on the hunt for a good, sturdy cabinet and some cute filing folders. No one said your filing system had to be bland. This is also a good time to sort through your files and decide which to keep, which to shred and which to toss in the recycling bin. Think about what you’ll be doing at your workstation. Will you be there for hours at a time? If so, you’ll need a comfortable chair. Make sure the height is low enough that you

can move your legs comfortably without hitting your knees on the desk. With comfort in mind, add some pleasing elements. Warm lighting is easy on the eyes and can help with fatigue. A decorative lamp can do the trick. Add some personal touches, too, such as a framed family photo. Bring in a plant and some pops of your favorite colors to top it off. Remember, a good home workstation will help keep you organized and also blend into your home.

The Right Contractor for Every Job When searching for a qualified contractor, follow these five tips from Windows Hawaii

BY SARAH PACHECO JANUARY 6, 2013 | HAWAIIRENOVATION.STARADVERTISER.COM

f you haven’t done so already, now is the perfect time to start setting some resolutions for ways to improve your life in 2013. One of the easiest and most cost-effective upgrades you can make in the coming year is to your home. And whether your goal is to add a little more space to a living area or completely redo the kitchen or master bath, every project has to start somewhere. Finding the right person to do the job can be daunting. Do you blindly pick a flashy advertisement? Or do you go with the company offering an introductory deal that seems too good to pass up? As a leader in home improvements, Windows Hawaii can help answer your questions and has offered five top tips to choosing the right contractor:

I

1) Make sure the contractor has a license. There are many people out there willing to pose as legitimate contractors, but they may not be qualified or legally licensed to make this claim. You can verify a license online at pvl.ehawaii.gov/pvlsearch/app or by calling 586-2700.

2) Check if the contractor has insurance. All quality contractors carry workers compensation, as required by law, as well as general liability insurance. They should be able to show you current certificates of insurance to prove they have coverage. The minimum should be $1 million. 3) Is the contractor a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB)? The BBB is a public service that provides consumers with a place to rate a contractor, solve disputes and file complaints if necessary. An A+ rating is the highest grade given. 4) Ask the contractor for a bid. Many contractors will offer a free estimate of how much they project the project will cost. Go to several different contractors, then compare bids. If the price is too low, that is usually a red flag that the contractor is creating cheap jobs or cutting corners. The general rule is to toss out the low, toss out the high, and go with the guy in the middle. 5) How long has the contractor been in business? The answer should be straight-forward: “We’ve been in business for more than 10 years.” But beware of the guys who say, “We’ve been in business for more than 25 years, but this is a new venture.” If in doubt, ask for references. A well-established contractor will be more than happy to direct you to former clients or show you

>> Before

a profile of past jobs. Other things to keep in mind are if the contractor has a place of business, such as a showroom or warehouse, and if the contractor has a staff of workers versus someone who relies strictly on subcontractors, which are generally cheaper, less-experienced sources of labor. As a business built on referrals from satisfied customers, Windows Hawaii learned long ago that providing quality materials and friendly services result in longevity in the home-improvement industry. You can learn more by calling Windows Hawaii at 6710808 or by going online to www.windowshawaii.com. >> After JANUARY 6, 2013 • 3

KAHALA PACIFIC FLOORS

Sharing expertise in wood flooring ood flooring has been used for hundreds of years all over the world and has evolved greatly to become the beautiful and elegant floor covering that it is today. Why, even the last ten years have been revolutionary, with exotic woods pushing traditional domestic species out of the way and manufacturers developing more durable and stable versions of this traditional beauty. It is safe to say that hardwood flooring is currently at the peak of its popularity and there are no signs of it slowing down. Shirley Pai Hilton is president and CEO of Hawaii’s largest wood flooring wholesaler, Kahala Pacific Floors (formerly Pacific Imports International). The company manufactures the very popular Kahala Floors and Bayside Flooring brands found locally. She is one of the foremost experts on wood flooring in Hawaii, and she is very happy to share in-depth information on the various types of wood flooring, decorating with wood flooring and the proper installation of the products. Her expertise is often tapped for local home improvement publications and she has provided consultation on many large flooring projects. In fact, one of her customers recently referred to her as the “Maven of Mahogany,” a description she especially appreciates because of her desire to share her knowledge with others. Hilton said wood flooring is a very popular choice for several good reasons, the first one having everything to do with aesthetics.

W

KAHALA PACIFIC FLOORS contact // 847-7711 address // 926 Kohou St. “Wood flooring just looks fantastic,” said Hilton. “It can add warmth, drama, character, richness — you name it. It’s like being all made up and using the right color of lipstick as the finishing pop!” And with all of the colors and grains available, there is a look to match any décor. Wood floors have also gained a large following among homeowners wanting to dump old dusty carpets — with their dust mites and other allergens — and switch to a surface that can be wiped clean. Additionally, carpet usually needs to be changed out after about 10 years, but the right wood floor will last a lifetime.

Contract License: #BC-27653 & #BC-14660

That brings our attention to the third major reason customers choose wood: it’s a one-time investment in a lifetime product that adds permanent value to real estate while being utilized on a dayto-day basis. As Hilton said, these days engineered wood floors are “where it’s at,” and the company’s sales run five to one in favor of Kahala Floors’ engineered woods (versus solids). Offering a refinishable layer of the “real wood” which has been installed onto a plywood base, engineered floors are not meant to be stingy on wood. Rather, their unique construction offers longevity that nearly equals that of a 3/4

inch solid wood floor, with the main advantages being dimensional stability and lower installation costs. Hilton said her desire to share reliable information on wood flooring has inspired her to organize a monthly workshop at the showroom titled “Wood and Stone Flooring 101” where a wealth of information is presented in a pleasant and organized manner. Past par ticipants always say how much they appreciated the terrific product information and straight talk about their options. The next session will be held Saturday,, Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. Call 847-7711 to reserve your seat today.

Tips for your DIY bathroom remodel A dding a bathroom to your home remains one of the most popular and rewarding home improvements you can make. In fact, when you sell your home, you can expect to recoup more than 50 percent of the cost of a bathroom addition. Creating a new bathroom where none currently exists can, however, be among the more challenging home improvements you can make.

Fortunately, with careful planning and the help of innovative plumbing fixtures, it is possible to add a bathroom to virtually any home. Here are some challenges and how you can address them: Finding space Where to put another bathroom is a burning question. Of course, the question is more challenging for smaller or

older homes, but options do exist. Options might include taking some space away from a garage, or adding a bathroom beneath stairs. Breaking through concrete Adding a bathroom in a home that sits on a slab traditionally requires cutting into concrete. There are many pitfalls to consider with this traditional approach.

Free of clutter, at last My home wasn’t always filled with feng shui bliss. Here’s how I went from life as a hoarder of all things to one who’s learned to minimize her mess

course of the next eight months, I dropped more than 10 pounds without even trying. I know it was directly related to letting go of all the physical burdens in the form of my stuff. Not only did I start feeling better and more energetic over time, but my business also started growing by leaps and bounds. Oppor tunities came out of “nowhere.” My emotional state improved and I felt less stressed by my challenges. Clearing out my clutter literally changed my experience of life. Remember, I am a double Cancer, so it is still a struggle for me to let things go, and I still have a tendency to accumulate, but every year, without fail, no matter how busy I am, I set aside two full days to clear my home. I now trust the process of life more than ever and find security in the knowing that life will bring me everything I need without my having to hoard things.

Alice Inoue

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Every time I read your column I always wonder what your home looks like and imagine it must be in perfect order. I’m curious about your life and how it was before you knew feng shui. How much can you attribute your success in your life to the feng shui of your home? I find great interest in your column, but I can never seem to get motivated to clear stuff out. he new year signifies new beginnings and opportunities for positive change, so I’ll take this opportunity in the first “Go Ask Alice” column of 2013 to share my “before feng shui” story with you.

T

Multiple storage units filled with “stuff” This may come as a shock, but about 10 years ago, I had three storage units filled with the things I thought I needed to keep — everything from clothes to furniture to gadgets and kitchen tools. I loved to buy things and I kept almost everything. I was paying $471 per month in storage unit rent because I lived in a condo and the closets and shelves were filled to the gills. I never understood why people would “de-clutter” and get rid of things. I thought living by the “I’ll keep it just in case” rule was best. It’s in my nature For those of you who know a bit about astrology, I am a Cancer — a “double” Cancer at that. This just means that at the time of my birth I had multiple emphasis points in the constellation of Cancer. Double Cancers are like crabs in that they often resist change in the environment and have a hard time letting go of stuff, very similar to the Rat personality in the Chinese horoscope. Both crabs and rats are driven by security. The study of feng shui When my career in media unexpectedly ended, I immediately got interested in

understanding the bigger picture of life and started on the path of becoming a professional astrologer. I immersed myself in learning about life cycles and life potential through astrology, which turned out to be a natural segue to studying feng shui. So, I took some intensive training courses in feng shui, thinking that it would be a good complement to astrology because they were both about “energy.” When I finished my feng shui course, I was excited to have information on how to help people set up their homes to reach their highest potential. I immediately started offering feng shui consultations. My awakening Then about a year or two later, as I was walking to my car with my significant other, I opened the trunk and revealed a cluttered mess. He jokingly said, “Feng shui consultant says, do as I say not as I do, huh?” I got a bit defensive and made excuses as to why I needed all those things, knowing deep

down that I was, in fact, living incongruently. I decided right then that even though I had the knowledge, I couldn’t ask others to do what I didn’t do myself. I was being inauthentic and knew I had to make a drastic change in my lifestyle. Minimizing my clutter I immediately set aside seven days to declutter my life. I made a difficult decision to clear, donate, give away or throw away anything that I didn’t need. Like a mad woman, I went from one end of the apartment to the other mercilessly purging and clearing. I even cleared out my storage units and was able to reduce them to only one small unit at $39 per month for “must keeps,” such as old photos, large suitcases and mandatory files. When I was done, I could breathe and felt liberated, as if I could do anything. So what eventually happened? That was one of the best things I ever did for our home and myself. Over the

Calendar your clean up I highly suggest that you avoid using the excuse of insufficient time by setting aside “de-clutter” days on your calendar and making the task the only thing you and your family do on those days. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to rid yourself of the stuff you do not need. Your clutter literally weighs you down. The more your home is de-cluttered and unencumbered, the more easily and freely the energy flows, enabling those who reside in the home to flourish in ways they might not otherwise. If you make the time to do some clearing, you can create an amazing 2013 with your home as your biggest supporter!

1. A splash of color Industry leader Pantone’s annual fashion color report sets the tone for home decor as well as clothing, and the spring 2013 report is no exception. Its softer-hued palette of Dusk Blue, Lemon Zest, African Violet, Grayed Jade, Linen and Tender Shoots is emboldened by Monaco Blue, Poppy Red, Emerald and Nectarine. Marc Thee, founder of the No. 1 residential interior design firm in the country, also sees a move toward pure color palettes such as cream and sea glass, khaki and white, or neutral with a pop of yellow. 2. Because the company offers color matching, customers can match their repositionable wallpaper to an existing paint color, updated decor or the new Pantone color palette.

3. Cooking up smart ideas Next year’s contemporary kitchen will include European frameless laminate cabinetry, multi-tasking appliances, hands-free faucets and increased smartphone and tablet functionality, according to Jamie Gold, a certified independent kitchen and bath designer. New metals such as rose gold and gun metal will be mixed, and pierced, hammered and oxidized textural metals will be especially popular. CATHY LEE

The Rule of Three When searching for colors, textures and spacial divisions to complete your look, stick to the “design in threes” principle for a perfectly balanced space

appy New Year! I know you’ve just barely gotten over Christmas and are probably still recuperating from those charge card bills, but nothing says it’s a new year like a new space! Haha! Well, that’s the designer in me talking, anyway. So if you’ve cleared out the Christmas tree and trimmings and are ready for a fresh start in your space, I’ve got some easy tips for you. A few months ago I completely remodeled a unit in Discovery Bay. The unit is a vacation rental that belongs to Paul Knight, a client from Canada. As you can see from the before photos, the décor was completely outdated. Paul wanted an overhaul and gave me free rein to create a space that was unique and different, but still had an island feel. Whether you’re thinking of a remodel or simply a fluff-up, an easy rule to remember is to design in threes. It’s especially useful, since many people tend to decorate with too much of one thing, like wood everywhere, or beige everywhere. Let’s start with color. I like to have a primary, secondary and accent color. Knowing I wanted a rich, dark floor, I went with a fresh primary color and kept the walls a light cream and the kitchen cabinets white.

H

>> After 14 • JANUARY 6, 2013

>> After

Other touches carry the white throughout the space, like the ceramic lamps, ceramic elephant and vase. My secondary color was rich brown: dark floors setting off the light walls, two shades of brown in the area rug, brown accent pillows and dining chairs. Finally, the accents. I love orange because it pops with creative energy. Orange is the color on the accent wall and in the armchair, throw pillows and even the one pop in the banana-leaf art.

Next is threes in texture. The dominant texture is natural wood. Can you spot the wood elements in the space? How about elements of my second texture, metals? Don’t overlook the rail lighting — and the appliances in the kitchen pick up the sheen. My third textural element is glass. The side tables, dining table, light cups in the rail lighting and glass accents on the countertops all carry this theme. And I wish you could see how the glass tiles in the kitchen backsplash take up the whites and browns and make them sparkle, but unfortunately the under-counter lighting wasn’t working the day of the photo shoot. Finally, threes work for spatial divisions,

>> Before

too. A balanced, visually pleasing space needs high, medium and low elements. Try to have objects line up at different levels. Notice that the tops of the banana leaves line up with the top of the mirror? Other elements are the same height as the chairs and so on. Break it up so not everything is on one level, and then bring in a sense of order by creating horizontal lines for the eye to follow. See? Whether you’re planning a remodel or just a fluff-up of your space in 2013, it can be as easy as 1-2-3!

HAWAII HOME EXPO JANUARY 6 • 2013 15

Tax credits explained ndoubtedly, nearly everyone has heard that the tax credits for photovoltaic systems have changed as of the new year. Although this is an unfortunate situation, Hawaii Home Expo (HHE) has taken the stance that there is still no better investment than installing PV for your home. While clients have come to expect the average payback time to be between three to four years (after

U

tax credits), it is important to note that because of the low costs that HHE maintains for all clients, the payback time will only increase by about a year in most cases. For those who may have been caught unawares, here is a quick break down of how the new tax credits work. One system is now considered maxed out at a panel rating of 5 kw (or 5,000 DC Watts). In rough num-

bers, this would come out to twenty panels rated at 250 Watts. For simple math (because HHE prices tend to be lower), let’s just say that this system has a total cost of $25,000 (or $5 per DC Watt). In the past, this would qualify for $8,750 in State tax credits. Under the current structure it will only be $5,000 in credits. While that is definitely less than before, based on the output of those 20 panels, that difference would be recouped through roughly 21 months of electrical savings, even in a less favorable sun zone like Kaneohe. Photovoltaic systems are still the best return on investment. And while many people may think that there’s no reason to rush and install a system since the tax credits just changed, keep in mind that this first change hit without much warning as well so it’s in everyone’s best interest to keep installing and keep saving money. Of course, the above example is a simplification as many people won’t need exactly twenty 250 W panels. Every home is different and Hawaii Home Expo can calculate exactly what’s needed. Let them walk you through the new laws and explain how a photovoltaic system is still simply the best investment around.

MURAKAMI’S ROOFING JANUARY 6 • 2013 17

Looking out for your roof by looking up BY KYLE GALDEIRA s the new year approaches, homeowners are reminded to be proactive when it comes to an often overlooked feature of their structure — the roof. “Roofing is something you never think about until it becomes a problem,” said Clinton Murakami, owner of Murakami’s Roofing. “It’s a good New Year’s resolution to take care of your roof.” Murakami’s Roofing has been assisting Hawaii’s homeowners for more than 35 years as Clinton now heads the family business after learning the ropes under the tutelage of his father, Clifford. The second generation roofer recommends that homeowners take action to inspect and identify potential problems with their rooftops before they become troublesome and expensive to remedy. Murakami suggests looking at your ceiling to identify any spotting or discoloration, which could be a result of leaks within the roofing system. While walking around your yard, Murakami recommends looking for

Also, keep an eye out for any warping, buckling or other blemishes that may stem from pests and termites eating away at the structure, or even water damage. After noticing any problems that require attention, the staff at Murakami’s Roofing is ready and able to assist with a free consultation, during which customers can choose from a variety of options best suited to meet their budget and needs. Murakami’s offers a host of roofing applications, including asphalt shingles that provide cost-effective, durable coverage and metal roofing designed to withstand various conditions present in the Islands. The company also features roll roofing for low-slope roofs with the goal of preventing moisture accumulation and can apply roof cooling mate-

rials, such as reflective elastomeric roof coatings, which reduce surface temperatures and help to keep the inside of a home cool. “We try hard to give good customer service, and it’s our service that sets us apart from our competitors,” said Murakami, who hopes to pass on the business to his son in the coming years and make it a third-generation company. “We all sell the same roofing products, but it all comes down to customer service. I have a lot of customers that used to be my dad’s, and God-willing, they will be my son’s cus-

tomers, too.” Just in time to address those New Year’s roofing resolutions, when customers purchase a complete re-roofing package through Murakami’s Roofing, the homeowner will receive one of two available bonus accessories. Customers may choose between a complimentary 50 feet of seamless aluminum rain gutters or a free 20-watt natural light solar attic fan, which helps to circulate the air within and cool the home. “When you pick up the phone and need help, we’re there for you,” said Murakami.

patio pleasant for more of the day — and more of the year — is to add simple temperature control features. If you live in a place where it gets uncomfortably hot during the summer, install misters around your favorite sitting areas to cool things down. A guest-friendly home is easier than you think E ntertaining at home with friends and family is very exciting but sometimes stressful. To prepare for your guests’ arrival, you may be tempted to just clean the kitchen counters, toss a few extra towels in the guest bathroom and ignore the rest of the house. Instead, your visitors will enjoy the party more if they have full access to an open, organized and welcoming home. Knowing where to start is the most impor tant thing. Lifestyle guru Susie Coelho has provided entertaining tips for the home on HGTV, “Oprah,” “Today” and “The View” and knows just what to do. Add simple decor to make a space inviting

When decorating the seating and buffet areas, Coelho suggested going simple with tea lights in glass votive jars and choosing a one- or two-tone color palette for dishes, napkins and flowers. “For beautiful ambiance and magical lighting, arrange candles down the center of the table,” she said. “If you want to add

some greenery among them for the holidays, you can, but keep it simple.” In addition to the candles as centerpieces, Coelho also recommended making the food part of the display as well. “Contrast is a buffet's best friend and you can find it in different heights, sizes, colors of the food, dishes and accessories. I have used everything from fabrics, herbs and pottery to flowers, candles and vases turned over a dish to get height and used an odd container for display,” she said. The more room, the merrier

As people start making themselves comfortable, they won’t just stay in the kitchen. Having all areas of the house clean and open will invite guests to gather and socialize, keeping the party going longer. One room your guests will be sure to visit is the bathroom. Consider placing a decorative candle in the room to add a festive glow for ambiance. Most impor tantly, be prepared for clogged drains in the bathroom and kitchen sinks, which could disrupt the

flow of the party. “A clogged sink drain always comes at the wrong time,” said Coelho. “To avoid these inconvenient situations, I recommend keeping two products handy at all times: Liquid-Plumr Double Impact Snake + Gel System and Liquid-Plumr Urgent Clear. These products work great for both the bathroom

and kitchen sinks to keep them running smoothly.”

Now that you had prepared your home for guests ahead of time, you can enjoy the fun and party the night away. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

Water heater options for homes f all is working well, most homeowners put little thought into their water heater. But when this critical appliance fails, it can be a nightmare that halts a home’s productivity completely. Don’t wait until an emergency occurs to take action; make updates before the life expectancy of the current heater ends. Newer units have better efficiency and lower operating costs if you choose the right one for your home. After all, heating water is the second largest energy drain in a home. Here are the three main types of water heaters.

may decrease. Plus, tankless water heaters can provide a steady stream of hot water that doesn’t run out. These types of water heaters are about the size of a medicine cabinet and are hung on an interior or exterior wall, perfect for homeowners with limited space. Most tankless water heaters are gas fueled, such as the popular Rheem Prestige Series Condensing Tankless Water Heater. This model is easy to install..

I

Traditional tank models Most homeowners have a traditional tank water heater where heated water is held in a tank throughout the day, providing hot water to the home when there’s a demand. If you already have the space, you may select a modern tank heater to replace the old one. The good news is today’s tank heaters are more efficient than ever, providing more hot water while using less energy. For example, the Rheem XR90 gas water heater can be retrofitted into an existing tank area, but takes up less space

because it’s a 29-gallon tank. It provides 90 gallons of hot water in the first hour following the heater’s initial firing; so, homeowners get three times the amount of hot water in an hour than what the tank actually holds.

Tankless options Tankless water heaters have been used for more than 50 years in other countries and are becoming more popular in the United States. A tankless heater uses energy to heat water only as it is needed, so energy is used efficiently and utility costs

Hybrid tank units Hybrid water heaters are more than twice as efficient as standard electric units. Consumers who switch to a hybrid electric water heater with heat pump technology will save $286 annually on their electric utility bills, compared to those who have a standard 50-gallon electric model (with a 0.90 energy factor), according to U.S. Department of Energy estimates. These tanks are set up with a heat pump as well as electric technology. Depending on the demand put on the system, the homeowner can select the most energy efficient means to heat water. Six key steps for a healthy home n addition to taking care of your family and yourself, it’s important to take extra care of your home. As the new year gets underway, you should take the time to pause, relax and recharge at home, if only for a few minutes, each day. Luckily, there are a number of simple, yet impactful ways to keep the entire household in good health. Here are seven examples.

we rely on to clean our floors and furniture may actually be making them dirtier. A recent study found that many vacuums actually suspend harmful allergen particles in the air, increasing our exposure to them. A vacuum with HEPA (High-EfficiencyParticulate-Air) filter will release less dirt and bacteria.

1. Pencil in cleaning Routine household cleaning keeps clutter and germs at bay. Corral loose items into decorative bins and baskets, then clean common high-touch areas such as faucets, door knobs and light switches to reduce the spread of viruses and bacteria. Be sure to dust regularly. If you have any sensitivity to cleaning products, try a solution of equal parts water and distilled white vinegar to clean everything from windows to appliances. 2. The power of a shower Installing a new showerhead can go a long way in improving your frame-of-mind. The Twist handheld shower from Moen has four unique settings, from “Immerse” and “Drench” to “Soothe,” and is available with

5. Door etiquette Adding a door mat on both sides of a door and having everyone promptly remove their shoes upon entering can significantly cut back on what is being tracked inside. The Carpet and Rug Institute estimates that up to 80 percent of dirt and allergens can be caught with a washable door mat — keeping your family healthy and your floors clean.

3. For the dogs Pets are extensions of our families and should be treated as such, even when it comes to bathing. These four-legged friends

4. Sweeping surprise For years, we have counted on our vacuums to get rid of dust and allergens in our homes. But, it turns out that the machines

6. Air it out One area many homeowners might not consider when it comes to a healthier home is the mattress. After washing sheets, delay putting on clean linens to allow time for mite-friendly moisture to evaporate. Now you’ll have a clean mattress to go along with your clean sheets. Siding with style adds timeless value ore homeowners are turning to value-driven renovation projects that will spruce up their space and withstand the test of time. Replacing outdoor siding is the home improvement site’s No. 1 pick for projects that add value to your home, according to HGTV.com. Refreshing your outdoor siding not only adds curb appeal but overall home value. For Chicago-based architect Dirk Danker, principal at Nagle Hartray Architecture, one of the most popular siding applications on a single-family home is wood. Its timeless versatility as a total siding strategy or use as an accent that sharpens up the front of a home makes it a smart, durable choice in any climate. “We like it for its natural color, longevity and workability,” said Danker. “It provides a maintenance-free structure.” In addition to using materials that are easy to install, homeowners tend to choose traditionally popular materials to

ing the bottom line. Wood siding comes in many different patterns and grades, such as bevel, board and batten, channel, and tongue and groove, to match a home’s style and budget. Stains and other finishes will help preserve the wood and keep it looking nice for years to come. Danker recommends pre-finishing siding onsite before it is installed. “We have finished cedar siding with both transparent coatings and semi-transparent stains,” Danker said. “Transparent coats look great because it highlights the natural look of the cedar siding.”

accommodate all budgets. Creating an accent wall or using wood as a complement that warms up other materials can make a project affordable while still boost-

Where solar solutions turn up the heat I t’s no secret that Hawaii’s solar industry has been booming for the past few years, but homeowners and industry professionals have recently expressed concern over the sudden changes in state tax rules that will drastically reduce the amount of tax credits available for Hawaii homeowners. If you have been considering reducing your electric bill with solar, but are worried you’ve missed the state tax credit opportunities because of changes being implemented in 2013, don’t panic: Sunetric has a solution. “The department of taxation issued a new administrative ruling to change the definitions of the state tax incentives,” shared Sunetric’s chief operating officer, Aaron Kirk. The new qualifications to receive state tax credits are now based on kilowatts installed. This means you may not be entitled to receive as much in return from the state as you may have in 2012. “This can result in up to a 50 percent cut in tax credits from the state level, just by altering the definition,” said Kirk. “Sunetric feels that the tax change decision was made too quickly and without looking at the impact it’s going to have on the solar industry, on Hawaii’s clean energy initiative or to Hawaii homeowners. “This tax code change will dramatically affect the ease in which local homeowners can put solar on their homes,” he added.

Kirk predicted that there may not be any openings for installations before the end of the year, unless you want to turn to drastic measures and go with someone who can’t guarantee the same quality of service. But don’t be discouraged and lose faith in turning your roof into a personal power plant. To continue to provide its reputable service to customers, and to assist homeowners who won’t be able to install photovoltaic before the end of the year, Sunetric has found exclusive means to cover the loss of tax rebates for homeowners. “We have access to an exclusive program that allows us to honor nearly all of the same tax credits that were available in 2012 for our new customers,” said Kirk. “We’ve worked hard to find a way to give homeowners a little bit more time to get in, and benefit from the better tax rebates that were available before this drastic cut was made.” However, Kirk noted that Sunetric will only be able to extend the 2012 tax credits for a limited time. “The resources of this program are limited and are allocated only to Sunetric customers. We are doing everything we can to extend it as long as possible and give as many local homeowners the benefits that these tax incentives provided before the rules changed,” said Kirk. Choosing to trust in Sunetric also means knowing

that you’ll get more than your money’s worth with top-tier, U.S.-made photovoltaic panels. To ensure that you’ll be able to take part in Sunetric’s exclusive offer, visit sunetric.com or call the company’s main offices at 262-6600.
