Go to Work at Home You can put your organizational skills and great work ethic to good use by turning any nook at home into a functional workspace

n 2012, I made the resolution to attend at least two shows and go sailing. I exceeded my goals by attending three and sailing twice. The year before, I resolved to take at least 10 pictures per week and averaged 15 to 20. I guess I have a tendency to set goals I can surpass. Resolutions always work best when they are attainable. For me, this means they often come with a number. This year, I’m going to start with my workspace. As a graduate student and a writer, I spend most of my time here, so it’s not a bad place to start. The good news about a home workspace is that you don’t need an entire room to have one.You can set up a workstation in the kitchen or even in the nook of your living room. Determine the size and type of desk you’ll need. Mine is a small space in the corner of

the room, so I’ve opted for a corner desk with multiple shelves stacked vertically. Tables also substitute as great desks. Just make sure there is enough space above and below for any necessary items like a filing cabinet. After this, create a filing system. For years,

I’ve depended on a couple of filing boxes from Ikea.This year, I’m resolving to change it up.The boxes are stuffed to the brim and starting to fall apart. Now, I’m on the hunt for a good, sturdy cabinet and some cute filing folders. No one said your filing system had to be bland. This is also a good time to sort through your files and decide which to keep, which to shred and which to toss in the recycling bin. Think about what you’ll be doing at your workstation. Will you be there for hours at a time? If so, you’ll need a comfortable chair. Make sure the height is low enough that you

can move your legs comfortably without hitting your knees on the desk. With comfort in mind, add some pleasing elements. Warm lighting is easy on the eyes and can help with fatigue. A decorative lamp can do the trick. Add some personal touches, too, such as a framed family photo. Bring in a plant and some pops of your favorite colors to top it off. Remember, a good home workstation will help keep you organized and also blend into your home.

The Right Contractor for Every Job When searching for a qualified contractor, follow these five tips from Windows Hawaii

f you haven’t done so already, now is the perfect time to start setting some resolutions for ways to improve your life in 2013. One of the easiest and most cost-effective upgrades you can make in the coming year is to your home. And whether your goal is to add a little more space to a living area or completely redo the kitchen or master bath, every project has to start somewhere. Finding the right person to do the job can be daunting. Do you blindly pick a flashy advertisement? Or do you go with the company offering an introductory deal that seems too good to pass up? As a leader in home improvements, Windows Hawaii can help answer your questions and has offered five top tips to choosing the right contractor:

1) Make sure the contractor has a license. There are many people out there willing to pose as legitimate contractors, but they may not be qualified or legally licensed to make this claim. You can verify a license online at pvl.ehawaii.gov/pvlsearch/app or by calling 586-2700.

2) Check if the contractor has insurance. All quality contractors carry workers compensation, as required by law, as well as general liability insurance. They should be able to show you current certificates of insurance to prove they have coverage. The minimum should be $1 million. 3) Is the contractor a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB)? The BBB is a public service that provides consumers with a place to rate a contractor, solve disputes and file complaints if necessary. An A+ rating is the highest grade given. 4) Ask the contractor for a bid. Many contractors will offer a free estimate of how much they project the project will cost. Go to several different contractors, then compare bids. If the price is too low, that is usually a red flag that the contractor is creating cheap jobs or cutting corners. The general rule is to toss out the low, toss out the high, and go with the guy in the middle. 5) How long has the contractor been in business? The answer should be straight-forward: “We’ve been in business for more than 10 years.” But beware of the guys who say, “We’ve been in business for more than 25 years, but this is a new venture.” If in doubt, ask for references. A well-established contractor will be more than happy to direct you to former clients or show you

Other things to keep in mind are if the contractor has a place of business, such as a showroom or warehouse, and if the contractor has a staff of workers versus someone who relies strictly on subcontractors, which are generally cheaper, less-experienced sources of labor. course of the next eight months, I dropped more than 10 pounds without even trying. I know it was directly related to letting go of all the physical burdens in the form of my stuff. Not only did I start feeling better and more energetic over time, but my business also started growing by leaps and bounds. Oppor tunities came out of “nowhere.” My emotional state improved and I felt less stressed by my challenges. Clearing out my clutter literally changed my experience of life. Remember, I am a double Cancer, so it is still a struggle for me to let things go, and I still have a tendency to accumulate, but every year, without fail, no matter how busy I am, I set aside two full days to clear my home. I now trust the process of life more than ever and find security in the knowing that life will bring me everything I need without my having to hoard things.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Every time I read your column I always wonder what your home looks like and imagine it must be in perfect order. I’m curious about your life and how it was before you knew feng shui. How much can you attribute your success in your life to the feng shui of your home? I find great interest in your column, but I can never seem to get motivated to clear stuff out. he new year signifies new beginnings and opportunities for positive change, so I’ll take this opportunity in the first “Go Ask Alice” column of 2013 to share my “before feng shui” story with you.

Multiple storage units filled with “stuff” This may come as a shock, but about 10 years ago, I had three storage units filled with the things I thought I needed to keep — everything from clothes to furniture to gadgets and kitchen tools. I loved to buy things and I kept almost everything. I was paying $471 per month in storage unit rent because I lived in a condo and the closets and shelves were filled to the gills. I never understood why people would “de-clutter” and get rid of things. I thought living by the “I’ll keep it just in case” rule was best. It’s in my nature For those of you who know a bit about astrology, I am a Cancer — a “double” Cancer at that. This just means that at the time of my birth I had multiple emphasis points in the constellation of Cancer. Double Cancers are like crabs in that they often resist change in the environment and have a hard time letting go of stuff, very similar to the Rat personality in the Chinese horoscope. Both crabs and rats are driven by security. The study of feng shui When my career in media unexpectedly ended, I immediately got interested in

understanding the bigger picture of life and started on the path of becoming a professional astrologer. I immersed myself in learning about life cycles and life potential through astrology, which turned out to be a natural segue to studying feng shui. So, I took some intensive training courses in feng shui, thinking that it would be a good complement to astrology because they were both about “energy.” When I finished my feng shui course, I was excited to have information on how to help people set up their homes to reach their highest potential. I immediately started offering feng shui consultations. My awakening Then about a year or two later, as I was walking to my car with my significant other, I opened the trunk and revealed a cluttered mess. He jokingly said, “Feng shui consultant says, do as I say not as I do, huh?” I got a bit defensive and made excuses as to why I needed all those things, knowing deep

down that I was, in fact, living incongruently. I decided right then that even though I had the knowledge, I couldn’t ask others to do what I didn’t do myself. I was being inauthentic and knew I had to make a drastic change in my lifestyle. Minimizing my clutter I immediately set aside seven days to declutter my life. I made a difficult decision to clear, donate, give away or throw away anything that I didn’t need. Like a mad woman, I went from one end of the apartment to the other mercilessly purging and clearing. I even cleared out my storage units and was able to reduce them to only one small unit at $39 per month for “must keeps,” such as old photos, large suitcases and mandatory files. When I was done, I could breathe and felt liberated, as if I could do anything. So what eventually happened? That was one of the best things I ever did for our home and myself. Over the

The Rule of Three When searching for colors, textures and spacial divisions to complete your look, stick to the “design in threes” principle for a perfectly balanced space

appy New Year! I know you’ve just barely gotten over Christmas and are probably still recuperating from those charge card bills, but nothing says it’s a new year like a new space! Haha! Well, that’s the designer in me talking, anyway. So if you’ve cleared out the Christmas tree and trimmings and are ready for a fresh start in your space, I’ve got some easy tips for you. A few months ago I completely remodeled a unit in Discovery Bay. The unit is a vacation rental that belongs to Paul Knight, a client from Canada. As you can see from the before photos, the décor was completely outdated. Paul wanted an overhaul and gave me free rein to create a space that was unique and different, but still had an island feel. Whether you’re thinking of a remodel or simply a fluff-up, an easy rule to remember is to design in threes. It’s especially useful, since many people tend to decorate with too much of one thing, like wood everywhere, or beige everywhere. Let’s start with color. I like to have a primary, secondary and accent color. Knowing I wanted a rich, dark floor, I went with a fresh primary color and kept the walls a light cream and the kitchen cabinets white.

Other touches carry the white throughout the space, like the ceramic lamps, ceramic elephant and vase. My secondary color was rich brown: dark floors setting off the light walls, two shades of brown in the area rug, brown accent pillows and dining chairs. Finally, the accents. I love orange because it pops with creative energy. Orange is the color on the accent wall and in the armchair, throw pillows and even the one pop in the banana-leaf art.

Next is threes in texture. The dominant texture is natural wood. Can you spot the wood elements in the space? How about elements of my second texture, metals? Don’t overlook the rail lighting — and the appliances in the kitchen pick up the sheen. My third textural element is glass. The side tables, dining table, light cups in the rail lighting and glass accents on the countertops all carry this theme. And I wish you could see how the glass tiles in the kitchen backsplash take up the whites and browns and make them sparkle, but unfortunately the under-counter lighting wasn’t working the day of the photo shoot. Finally, threes work for spatial divisions,

too. A balanced, visually pleasing space needs high, medium and low elements. Try to have objects line up at different levels. Notice that the tops of the banana leaves line up with the top of the mirror? Other elements are the same height as the chairs and so on. Break it up so not everything is on one level, and then bring in a sense of order by creating horizontal lines for the eye to follow. See? Tax credits explained ndoubtedly, nearly everyone has heard that the tax credits for photovoltaic systems have changed as of the new year. Although this is an unfortunate situation, Hawaii Home Expo (HHE) has taken the stance that there is still no better investment than installing PV for your home. While clients have come to expect the average payback time to be between three to four years (after

tax credits), it is important to note that because of the low costs that HHE maintains for all clients, the payback time will only increase by about a year in most cases. For those who may have been caught unawares, here is a quick break down of how the new tax credits work. One system is now considered maxed out at a panel rating of 5 kw (or 5,000 DC Watts). In rough num-

bers, this would come out to twenty panels rated at 250 Watts. For simple math (because HHE prices tend to be lower), let’s just say that this system has a total cost of $25,000 (or $5 per DC Watt). In the past, this would qualify for $8,750 in State tax credits. Under the current structure it will only be $5,000 in credits. While that is definitely less than before, based on the output of those 20 panels, that difference would be recouped through roughly 21 months of electrical savings, even in a less favorable sun zone like Kaneohe. Photovoltaic systems are still the best return on investment. And while many people may think that there’s no reason to rush and install a system since the tax credits just changed, keep in mind that this first change hit without much warning as well so it’s in everyone’s best interest to keep installing and keep saving money. Of course, the above example is a simplification as many people won’t need exactly twenty 250 W panels. Every home is different and Hawaii Home Expo can calculate exactly what’s needed. Let them walk you through the new laws and explain how a photovoltaic system is still simply the best investment around.

Where solar solutions turn up the heat I t’s no secret that Hawaii’s solar industry has been booming for the past few years, but homeowners and industry professionals have recently expressed concern over the sudden changes in state tax rules that will drastically reduce the amount of tax credits available for Hawaii homeowners. If you have been considering reducing your electric bill with solar, but are worried you’ve missed the state tax credit opportunities because of changes being implemented in 2013, don’t panic: Sunetric has a solution. “The department of taxation issued a new administrative ruling to change the definitions of the state tax incentives,” shared Sunetric’s chief operating officer, Aaron Kirk. The new qualifications to receive state tax credits are now based on kilowatts installed.This means you may not be entitled to receive as much in return from the state as you may have in 2012. “This can result in up to a 50 percent cut in tax credits from the state level, just by altering the definition,” said Kirk. “Sunetric feels that the tax change decision was made too quickly and without looking at the impact it’s going to have on the solar industry, on Hawaii’s clean energy initiative or to Hawaii homeowners. “This tax code change will dramatically affect the ease in which local homeowners can put solar on their homes,” he added.

Kirk predicted that there may not be any openings for installations before the end of the year, unless you want to turn to drastic measures and go with someone who can’t guarantee the same quality of service. But don’t be discouraged and lose faith in turning your roof into a personal power plant.
