Facebook app adds Inuktut Users will be able to contribute translations for consideration by other Inuktut speakers

Facebook in Inuktut? Yes, please.

The social media giant joined up with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) and Nunavut's Inuit language authority Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit (IUT) to launch the new translation app in time for Nunavut Day July 9.

Starting today, Inuktut speakers can contribute translation suggestions for the strings of words and phrases that make up the Facebook interface through the Translate Facebook app on desktop and mobile devices, according to the news release.

"When someone has offered a proposed translation, others in the community can vote the translation 'up' or 'down.'

Once a translation has been voted up enough, it becomes the official proposed translation for that string," stated Facebook.

"The launch of Facebook in Inuktut is slated for 2019, based on the volume of feedback received from the community."

NTI president Aluki Kotierk welcomed the app.

"Facebook's recognition of their role in the promotion and use of Inuktut is very much welcomed, particularly in Nunavut where it is the public majority language.

This is refreshing because Inuit in

Crystal Serenity won't return to Nunavut this year

The Crystal Serenity won't sail through the Northwest Passage this summer, but 2018 could still see the number of Nunavut cruise ship passengers reach near record highs.

If all of the cruises booked for this summer sell out, the total number of passengers would reach 4,946, according to the Department of Economic Development and Transportation (ED&T).

That compares to a maximum capacity of 4,972 passengers last year.

Regardless, the planned 70 total community visits will easily set an all-time high – 59 in 2016 was the previous best – and the 25 voyages this summer will match the previous record from 2016.

This year's community visits will take place between July 30 and Sept. 17.

Without the Serenity, the Norwegian-based MV Fram – carrying 500 tourists – will be the vessel with the most passengers.

However, multiple voyages by several of the 11 cruise ships sailing in the Arctic this year make up for the absence of the Serenity, which only had close to 600 people on board last year, leaving many empty cabins.

The maiden Arctic voyage in 2016 was full.

"The company has not announced any new itineraries into this region at this time," stated Joanne Lee, a public relations specialist with Crystal Cruises, owner of the Serenity.

However, Kevin Kelly, CEO of Travel Nunavut, and Sebastian Charge, manager of tourism development with ED&T both said they expect to see Crystal Cruises back in Nunavut in the future,

although not likely with the hulking Serenity.

Charge said Crystal Cruises is building a smaller-scale expedition ship that will probably be used in the Arctic in the coming years.

Overall, cruise ship passenger numbers have been trending upwards over the past several years.

"There's growth but we're not looking at explosive growth or anything," said Charge. "It's a very niche market."

Kelly credited Destination Nunavut for its work promoting the territory.

"It's great to see more visits happening," he said.

Charge noted that the 11 participants in the Government of Nunavut's pilot Inuit cruise training initiative – previously known as the cruise ship boot camp – will be working aboard cruise ships this summer.

They will then finish the second phase of the training, which will consist of subject matter such as Nunavut history, tour guide training, Zodiac guide training, cultural sensitivity training, wildlife identification and polar bear guard training.

ED&T has also started helping communities capitalize on visiting vessels through cruise preparedness workshops.

Those workshops were held in Gjoa Haven and Pond Inlet last year. Another is scheduled in Clyde River on July 24-25.

"It involves basically everyone in the community from artists to tour guides to hamlet officials – selecting price points, dealing with contracts how to issue payment effectively for the artists, that kind of thing," Charge explained.

Gjoa Haven will welcome

five different cruise ships making seven stops this summer, some of them during the Umiyaqtutt Festival running Aug. 25-Sept. 3. Close to 2,100 tourists are expected, said economic development officer Bob Cheetham.

"It's going to be busy this year," he said. "We're looking forward to it."

Things generally went well last summer, with plenty of positive comments from visitors, Cheetham said.

Even so, there will be more tour guides in place this year and those guides will be wearing more identifiable clothing, he said.

He added that a short road is also being built to provide more direct access to the local health centre, should a passenger need medical attention.

"That just makes it that much better for overall safety and emergency response," he said.

Combined airline promises improvements, but no guarantees Proposed First Air/Canadian North merger puts into question airfares, cargo rates and jobs

News of a proposed merger between First Air and Canadian North, the two dominant airlines serving Nunavut, has startled many Nunavummiut since word came on July 6.

"Nunavut is so dependent on the airlines for basic transportation of goods and people," said Iqaluit's Victor Tootoo, "so a merger of two is a concern that I have in terms of scheduling, frequency of flights, number of aircraft servicing routes, airfares, even rewards programs."

It's not possible to predict or guarantee post-merger fares and scheduling, replied Canadian North manager of communications Kelly Lewis, adding that he and his counterpart, First Air's Dan Valin, collaborated on responses to questions posed by Nunavut News.

The existing competition between First Air and Canadian North on their overlapping routes has led to flights with too many unsold seats and too much empty space in cargoholds, resulting in higher ticket prices and cargo rates, said Lewis.

"We believe the presence of competition in absence of sufficient demand comes at a high price, and that Northern communities would be better served by one strong, reliable air carrier operating a sustainable schedule," he wrote.

"This merger will improve the sustainability and efficiency of Arctic air services."

Tootoo – voicing his own thoughts because he hadn't yet had a chance to consult with the

members of the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce as that organization's president – is familiar with many people in the territory who work for the airlines.

"I don't know how many of them will have jobs after this is all is said and done. I am concerned for those friends and acquaintances as human beings, as individuals, for their employment," he said.

No labour guarantees will be made, according to Lewis. Currently, each airline has close to 800 employees, with about half of First Air's workers based in the North while about onethird of Canadian North's workforce resides North of 60.

"Our goal will be to leverage the respective strengths and experience of both teams, keeping as many people as possible," Lewis wrote. "We've committed to our employees to communicate openly and honestly throughout the merger process to ensure that our team members are kept informed and can continue to focus on providing the best possible service to our customers."

The new Canadian North will continue its Aurora Rewards program and its affiliation with Aeroplan after the merger, Lewis stated.

Yet the lost element of competition between the airlines could lead to complacency, Tootoo suggested.

"You could expect to see something new, different and better every once in a while from the two different companies and I hope that that's not lost with a new organization," he said.

First Air and Canadian North have agreed to terms on combining their fleets.

There are no guarantees on post-merger ticket prices, scheduling or employee retention, according to representatives of the airlines.

He added that he's also concerned about a possible reduction in sponsorships from a single airline as opposed to two.

"Things like Nunavut Day, for example, or the Alianait Arts Festival. Pick a thousand different things that happen in all the communities in Nunavut – all of those happenings, events, benefitted from having competition at the airlines, in one way or another," he said.

Conversely, Tootoo said better utilization of aircraft in a combined fleet and improved availability of pilots and staff should be an upside – something that both airlines have cited as a future advantage.

"I think each airline had downtime for aircraft because of crewing issues, and an aircraft on the ground doesn't make you any money, it costs you money," Tootoo said.

Sorting out the regulatory review First Air, Canadian North merger is in hands of Competition Bureau

Canada's Competition Bureau is aware of the proposed merger between First Air and Canadian North and will review the ramifications.

The Competition Bureau will aim to determine whether the deal would "result in a substantial lessening or prevention of competition," Jayme Albert, the organization's senior communications adviser, confirmed last week.

The extent of Transport Canada's involvement is still to be determined.

There are different review procedures for mergers where the target's assets exceed $92 million and when the combined Canadian assets or revenues of the two parties exceed $400 million. Although the Competition Bureau will be privy to those figures as they pertain to First Air and Canadian North, the public isn't going to get a peek at the numbers.

"We're unfortunately not able to provide that information, as valuation is a commercially sensitive topic for any business," stated Kelly Lewis, manager of communications with Canadian North, when Nunavut News requested the figures.

The proponents also won't

publicly disclose the percentage ownership that the Quebec-based Makivik Corporation, parent company of First Air, and the NWT-based Inuvialuit Development Corporation, owners of Canadian North, will each hold if the merger is approved, other than to say it will be a wholly-Inuitowned venture.

"As the merged airline will be privately owned, just like First Air and Canadian North, its balance sheet and other financial details will not be disclosed," Lewis stated.

In cases involving national transportation, a public interest review could ensue under Transport Canada. That review would encompass consultations with the territories, other air carriers, airports and citizens who use these airlines, according to MarieAnyk Cote, spokesperson for Transport Canada.

A final decision about the proposed merger rests with federal cabinet, based on advice from the transport minister, with input from the commissioner of competition, Cote added.

Asked whether the Competition Bureau will recommend any service guarantees for Nunavut communities, Albert replied, "The bureau understands the essential

role of air transportation to remote communities that rely on it for critical needs such as economic development, food and healthcare. Compliance with the Competition Act is an essential practice for all industries, including the airline industry.

"As the bureau is obligated by law to conduct its work confidentially, I am unable to comment further on our review."

Although First Air and Canadian North hope to have the green light to complete their merger by the end of this year, Albert couldn't commit to meeting that time frame.

"It is difficult to determine in advance how long a particular merger review will take to complete as the bureau evaluates the steps that need to be taken on a case-by-case basis," Albert stated.

"As always, we work with the merging parties to complete our reviews as expeditiously as possible.

"Where a merger is notifiable and the minister of transport triggers a public interest review of the merger as it relates to national transportation, the commissioner of competition has 150 days within which to report on the potential competition concerns to the minister."

What sort of ripple effects could a First Air and Canadian North merger have? Will other airlines seize the opportunity to provide competition? Will grocery costs rise or fall at Northern stores and Co-ops? These are the responses that Nunavut News received:

Arctic Co-operatives "The challenges of high cost and small market sizes are ones we understand full well," said Duane Wilson, vice-president of stakeholder relations with Arctic Co-operatives. "I've got a great degree of confidence that the cost structure can be lower (for a combined airline)... time will tell how that translates into lower prices or better service."

If there is an increase in cargo costs, retail customers will ultimately bear those extra costs in retail outlets, Wilson acknowledged.

Calm Air Is Calm air planning to expand its operations in the North as a result of a proposed First Air merger with Canadian North?

"The answer is no," stated Gary Bell, president and CEO of Calm Air. "Splitting the traffic to communities as far apart and as sparsely populated as they are in Northern Canada

North West Company "We do not expect the merger to have a significant impact on our operations in the near term. We will continue to monitor the situation and do not have anything further to add at this time," stated Derek Reimer, North West Company's director of business development.

Air Canada "We currently do not have immediate plans to add services to Canada's North," said Angela Mah, spokesperson for Air Canada.

Don't feed the trolls Northern News Services

As reported last week, Cambridge Bay will host its first ever same-sex wedding on Aug. 8 as Jason Koblogina marries Kyle Mercer, who is originally from Yellowknife.

The two met on Facebook and have been living together in the community for two years. They have also adopted two children.

They say their wedding will be 'colourful,' with bridesmaids each wearing a different colour of the rainbow.

Their story is one of the most popular items on nunavutnews.com this month, with almost unanimous support for these men as they share their love with the rest of Nunavut.

We used the words 'almost unanimous' for a reason. There's always one, isn't there?

In this case, one reader described the news as 'disgusting,' which led to other readers jumping in to defend Koblogina and Mercer. What ensued was a tirade of 'colourful' language, but not colourful in the way the couple imagined.

That one reader's comments go beyond the standards we allow in print. Needless to say, he really, really dislikes the idea of same-sex marriage, and presumably anything outside of heterosexual 'norms.'

opinions in Nunavut but one of the few willing to speak their views in public.

We've seen a similar conversation before, most notably in 2014.

You might recall Iqaluit city council's decision to raise the rainbow flag in support of gay rights as a reaction to Russia's crackdown on the LGBTQ community ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics. This displeased city councillor Simon Nattaq, who notably said it was not Inuit custom to be gay, and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. president Cathy Towtongie commended Nattaq for speaking up.

She was later forced to release a statement that she and NTI "support the rights and struggles of all disadvantaged groups in our society."

She said her support of Nattaq was taken out of context.

Nattaq is still a city councillor and Towtongie is now an MLA who aspired to be premier. Her November speech for the premiership showed that 2014 wasn't so long

ago, and little has changed.

These are our public leaders, and people listen when they speak. But those with a powerful voice have a responsibility to use it to represent the interests of those without the privilege of such a position.

In the wake of the flag flap, former MP Jack Anawak's daughter Sky Aurora spoke up for gay rights, creating the Nunavut Same Sex Group on Facebook. She disputed the idea that same-sex attraction does not exist in Inuit culture.

We believe there's room for everyone in this territory, and room for a broad range of differences between us.

Koblogina and Mercer deserve their time in the spotlight as much as any other couple. They deserve to be embraced for having the courage to share their story knowing that trolls would inevitably try to throw shade on their happy occasion.

If we've learned anything from the global political landscape, it's best not to feed the trolls. We can't ignore those who hate but we can show them the power of love to win the day.

So congratulations to the happy couple. We hope by your example you are able to change the minds of those who don't believe your kind of love belongs in Nunavut.

The best interest of others Our public engagements always points to the bottom line of 'social justice'. This means we are working towards achieving the best interests of our people in need.

In my view, in order for us to understand this, we need to add a very personal touch around this concept. Allow me to try this line of thought...

When you first met your significant other, you did everything possible to have this special person respond to you and to want to be with you. You want him/her to share in your thoughts, wishes and dreams.

Remember those early days? You protected this special person from harm, you spoke kind words and went the extra mile to make this person feel safe and accepted. You even went

so far as to explain that this is where I want to travel to, this is the kind of work I'm involved in and I'm looking at buying my own home. These are very personal and intimate times of sharing with that special person. Perhaps we need to go

back in time and rejuvenate these thoughts and feelings and regain our 'first love' for this special individual.

I think in order for us to really make an impact for those in need, we need to incorporate these thoughts and feelings and apply them in our engagements with those who are struggling.

By going the extra mile, we place our personal agendas aside in the best interests of others.

I've even heard some people say, "I don't want anyone to go through what I went through because of..."

I hope we have a bit of an insight into what 'social justice' really means and how we can actively ensure the weaker ones are empowered and enlightened.

GN creates Department of Human Resources

Iqaluit With an eye on Inuit employment rates, the Government of Nunavut is creating a new Department of Human Resources.

The new department will bring together functions that have fallen under Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs and the Department of Finance since the former Department of Human Resources was dissolved in 2012.

"We are moving forward with our Turaaqtavut

commitments aimed at strengthening human resource capacity across the GN," said George Hickes, minister responsible for the public service. "The creation of a more targeted department echoes the direction of full caucus, and is an important first step forward."

Work is underway to identify the best structure for the new department, to develop budgets and realign staff, and to determine an implementation timeline, according to a GN news release.

A planning team will be tasked with ensuring that the transition is smooth and effortless, and has as little impact as possible

Iglulik's Bart Hanna chosen to create House of Commons sculpture

Ottawa The House of Commons has selected Iglulik's Bart Hanna to create a sculpture in honour of Nunavut's 20th anniversary as a territory in 2019.

The sculpture will go on display in Parliament's West Block until it can be permanently moved to Centre Block upon completion of renovations in the foyer there.

Hanna took up carving in the early 1960s and received formal art training in Canada and in the United States.

He works in many different media including soapstone, serpentinite, narwhal tusk, baleen, walrus bone and tusk, caribou antler, white marble from Arctic Bay, muskox horn and crystalline alabaster, according to a news release from MP Geoff Regan, Speaker in the House of Commons.

Naujaat bakery delivers the goods Baker specializes in custom cakes

Naujaat's is the only member Co-op store in Nunavut with its own bakery, and Cheryl Siusangnark is the baker.

"Cheryl is our main baker, and she's our cake decorator. We do cakes in here as well, and she's got talent like I've never seen in the North for doing cakes. She's an extremely talented lady," said general manager Troy Leblanc.

Siusangnark, a self-taught cake decorator, agreed to answer a few questions by email.

Her love of baking and cake decorating drew her to the job.

"One day I decided to bake a cake and decorate with an NHL logo. I then realized I loved doing it and have been doing it since.

I did lots of baking before and that's another reason I wanted to work in the bakery," stated Siusangnark.

Leblanc explained it's not a typical bakery.

"Because if you were to bake from scratch, the products would be much more expensive.

We get what's called Bake Off. It's a frozen loaf of bread, we proof it and it rises. Then we bake it off," said Leblanc.

"We use that white bread for various things.

We make raisin bread, cinnamon buns, different pastries, doughnuts, several different types of bread, French bread. So you can use the same item to make different things."

Baking takes place five days a week, sometimes six.

Susannah Mablik, a second baker, is strictly on the breads and pastries.

"She'll do anything else except for the cakes."

The bakery also serves freshly prepared sandwiches, sub sandwiches and French bread sandwiches.

Leblanc says he only buys the bakery bread, even though the store carries brand-names.

"I don't like the loaf of bread that comes up already baked. I buy my bread from the bakery because it's the closest thing you're going to get to homemade bread in the North. It is really good."

Siusangnark eats the bakery products "all the time. Sometimes too much," she states, with a smiling emoticon.

"My favorite cake I made was a wedding cake for a community member here in Naujaat.

I really loved how it came out. People really like the cakes as we can customize them with edible prints like a picture or a favorite sports team, etc."

Asked if she ever hears back from customers, Siusangnark responded that "people always say they love my cake decorating and my baking. Knowing this really makes me feel really good."

Leblanc says some people in the community only buy bakery bread, but because it is a bit smaller than a pre-baked loaf, some larger families opt for the typical sliced bread off the shelf.

"Some people will only buy the bakery bread as a treat," he said.

"The people really love the bakery, especially the flaky buns – they are everybody's favorite," stated Siusangnark.

Leblanc said a baker will be coming up to Naujaat to train Siusangnark on a few tricks and tips, as well as how to make new items and sweets.

The bakery, included in the plans for a new store that opened in 2012, was a long-held dream for the former manager.

"John Kaufmann, the manager here for 17 years, it was always his goal to get a bakery.

It happened," Leblanc said. "There have been several staff trained throughout the years. It's a bonus to the community, for sure. It's not often you get home-baked goods except from your own kitchen. And who wants to bake all the time?"

Fire at the Iqaluit dump

Iqaluit There was a fire at the Iqaluit dump for the second time this summer July 11.

Sirens echoed in the city for several hours as municipal enforcement officers attempted to clear roads for the water trucks going back and forth from the water station to the dump.

While eight firefighters responded to a June 21 fire and extinguished it in an hour, this blaze required more effort.

"Thanks to the quick response, hard work and team spirit, the fire at the city landfill was brought under control within two hours. I am very proud, and extremely grateful, to the many city employees for their assistance and for their efforts," stated Mayor Madeleine Redfern in a news release.

Redfern thanked volunteer and full-time fire department staff, public works employees, municipal enforcement officers, recreation and communications staff, as well as the Airport Authority Fire Department and Nunavut Excavating for their quick and effective response.

In October 2017, Redfern told Nunavut News shutting down the dump and opening up a new landfill – with a recycling centre – would come with a $30 million price tag.

Carvings for Norwegian museum

Gjoa Haven The Hamlet of Gjoa Haven has signed an agreement with the Fram Museum in Oslo, Norway, to provide $100,000 worth of carvings to the museum, according to Bob Cheetham, the community's economic development officer.

"They want to carry some of our carvings, so we've agreed as a hamlet to... coordinate those activities and pay the carvers for the work that they do," Cheetham said. "That will be a lot of carvings, smaller and larger (sizes)."

The Fram Museum, which focuses on polar history, is home to the Gjoa, a restored ship captained by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen near the turn of the 20th century. It is from the Gjoa that the Kitikmeot community gained its name, Gjoa Haven.

"The different tastes were very delicious," said Charles Zikalala, Kitikmeot program coordinator with the Embrace Life Council.

The day camp is in its first year.

"The Get Happy Summer Day Camp, with RPAN (Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut)," said Young.

A total of 52 children aged five to 12 are registered.

"It's going really well. It goes until August 3rd," said Young.

"And we're trying to do a community gathering once a week, where it's either a community baseball game or soccer. But the rec committee and the rec coordinator are just working on that now."

The Embrace Life Council embraced numerous cultures from around the world on June 30.

A multicultural day was held at the community hall. It attracted close to 100 people, who represented nine nations. The entertainment and food had an international flair as well.

Recreation fundraiser launched

Kugluktuk The Hamlet of Kugluktuk's recreation department has big dreams but it's going to require big donations to make them a reality.

A lacrosse program, a climbing wall, a trampoline, a forging program to craft steel blades – these are all possibilities if enough money is contributed, said recreation coordinator Matt Craddock.

An online fundraising campaign, with a goal of $50,000 through a site called fundrazr, is aimed primarily at a southern audience because there are already many demands for the limited money available within the community and across the territory.

"In our budget we have no money for equipment or stuff like that," said Craddock. "We have to raise (it) all on our own. This is our big push... I'm really trying to reach out to other sports fans. People who have a heart for the North."

As of July 11, the amount raised sat at $2,150. The bulk of that comes from 'V' Division RCMP on behalf of the Const.

Graham Holmes Scholarship Fund.

The campaign was launched about a month ago and is due to expire on Sept. 26, but it can be extended, Craddock noted.

Various locally-made crafts are offered in exchange for donations over certain amounts.

Community fun in Kimmirut

Kimmirut Summer is in full swing in Kimmirut, with Canada and Nunavut Day celebrations done, the launch of a new day camp, and plans for weekly community activities.

Nunavut Day was spent barbecuing hot dogs, eating clams and fish, playing traditional games, and running some races from noon to late afternoon, said senior administrative officer

New SAO for Pang

Panniqtuuq/Pangnirtung The Hamlet of Pangnirtung has a new senior administrative officer.

Jim Crawford, who replaces Ron Ladd, arrived in the community from British Columbia in June. Crawford said he was still figuring things out.

"I really like it," he said. "This opportunity came up, and I thought 'What a great experience.' And it has been."

Crawford is already looking forward to winter activities, saying he's not unfamiliar with -30C, -40C weather. He's planning on bringing up his skis.

Reading in motion

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay "Motion commotion" is the theme for the summer reading program at the May Hakongak Community Library.

The youngsters who take part, from kindergarten to Grade 6, made a cardboard castle earlier this month. The next step will be to make the castle mobile, in keeping with the need for motion, librarian Pam Langan said. A future project, involving toilet paper rolls, will possibly result in some homemade helicopters, she added.

"It's about movement. They get to read for about half an hour and then we do a craft or something," Langan said, adding that the program is held Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

"Today I want to dream about the next 25 years. We have an important role to play in Nunavut. Let us continue with our big dreams and bold vision."

Gjoa Haven artist known for black ink drawings Danny Aaluk built reputation over 28 years, starting with a logo

What do governments, Inuit organizations, and people from Las Vegas and Iraq have in common? They seek out the work of Gjoa Haven artist Danny Aaluk.

His work can be seen as distinctive drawings, logos, letterheads, usually on paper, also on a wall, and even a dice game to encourage quitting smoking.

Aaluk was in Iqaluit for the Nunavut Arts Festival from July 4 to 9. He was one of 14 artists gathered in the capital to work and learn side-byside at a variety of workshops and events tailored to enhance their craft and develop other arts-related skills, such as marketing.

"First time I ever went here, it was about 15 years ago – in and out, in and out here and there every year. Back then it was in Cambridge Bay, Rankin, then Iqaluit. Then always Iqaluit. A couple of years ago it was in Cambridge Bay," Aaluk said.

"It inspires me. The first time I came around I saw so many beautiful works. Every time I come, I want to get better and better and better."

Aaluk's reputation really took off, he says, after he won Kitikmeot Chamber of Commerce's logo contest, but his art was always popular.

When he headed off to Cambridge Bay for the Nunavut Arts Festival in 2016 from his home community, he sold some pieces on the way, and an hour into the festival he was sold out.

Drawing in black is his preference, and his work is notable for including a circle, representing the world and the sun, three guiding stars pointing to the North, and animals.

Aaluk's grandfather always took him out on the land.

"I would be out there with my grandfather all the time.

He would always tell me, 'Don't forget these animals.

Don't forget the names of the animals. Look at the animals and learn from them.' Ever since I started art drawing, I try to draw animals," he said.

Art came by way of

Aaluk's father, who did a lot of carving, he says.

"I'd seen so much art and I said, 'I've got to try this.' I entered a logo contest 28 years ago. I won that," he said, adding he then decided to see if he could sell one drawing.

"There was two couple, they were artists as well, and they gave me some pens and paper. They wanted me to do a few of them. I did. Then I thought, 'This is what I could do to make money.' So I've been doing this ever since."

He works for hours every single day.

Gjoa Haven is a popular destination for tourists, and each year their numbers are increasing. Aaluk says he thinks 12 cruise ships are expected this year, and he recalls one time when 600 tourists visited the hamlet.

While other residents are known for their sealskin mitts and carvings, Aaluk is known for his drawings. It's not unusual for Gjoa Haven children to bring tourists over to see Aaluk. It started with Gjoa Haven's celebration of his great-great-grandfather polar

Finding the light in performance 'Our culture is big on allowing individual spirits to shine, and I love that'

Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory's given name was preordained and, it should come as no surprise, it embodies artistry.

Laakkuluk was plucked from a lullaby. Her Greenlandic mother was six months pregnant when she got married to Williamson Bathory's father in Greenland. He was English but fluent in Inuktitut, and didn't know the words to the Greenlandic speeches, songs and poetry recited during their wedding ceremony.

"He decided to sing that lullaby at (their) wedding ... everybody loved the song so much that at their wedding reception they decided to name me Laakkuluk, whether I was a boy or a girl," Williamson Bathory says, laughing with delight as she recounts the story. "A lot of older Inuit sing my lullaby song to me when they see me."

Williamson Bathory was born and raised in Saskatoon – an "unlikely place for such a strong Greenlandic family," she acknowledges.

Her mother and another Greenlander taught her how to mask dance at age 13.

"That's been a very big part of my life from early on," she says of the art, which involves a base of black face paint, embellished expressions and elaborate movements, sometimes well within others' "personal space."

In university, Williamson Bathory took courses like cultural psychiatry and political science but she continued to exhibit her creative flair through writing and performance arts. While students, she and her spouse, who's from Calgary, agreed that moving to the Arctic was in their plans. They made that a reality in 2005.

"It's an important part of who I am to be able to work with Inuit and for Inuit," she says. "In Iqaluit, we have a lot of very good friends who have been involved in the arts for a very long time."

The 38-year-old uses her art as an outlet to express her feminism.

"We live in a society that, through both its colonization and through patriarchy, it's doing an awful lot to silence and diminish women's power.

I know that so much healing and so much reciprocity exists in allowing feminists to come to the forefront," she says.

Promoting Inuit culture, individ-

ually and collectively, is another of her objectives.

"Even though we have such a strong, united culture and language, (we) are able to express ourselves as individuals. It's a very big part of who we are as Inuit, she says. "Our culture is big on allowing individual spirits to shine, and I love that."

Williamson Bathory is able to convey her artistry via a multitude of media and talents: writing, dancing, music, acting and curating the art of others.

"To be versatile, to be able to do these different things, means that you've got ways of thinking that are fresh and rejuvenating for each realm," she says.

Her accomplishments in those various disciplines led to her being selected as the winner of the first Kenojuak Ashevak Memorial Award in June.

Although Williamson Bathory values individual expression, she still thrives on collaboration. The $10,000 prize that accompanies the award will be used for an improvisational group project that incorporates light via modern technology.

"We'll figure out how to draw light around performance – the col-

our, the shapes – with basically a stylus and an iPad. (It's) not so much as an enhancement to what happens on stage in our performance, because there's so much happening already, but as a complement," she explains.

The reaction to that future presentation may leave an indelible mark on spectators, as it might with Williamson Bathory.

Performance artistry can bring magical moments, a special connection with audience members. Williamson Bathory recalls one such instance last year during the inaugural run of a play that she co-wrote: Kiinalik.

There were some young boys from Cape Dorset among the audience members and they were clearly intimidated by her Greenlandic mask dancing, she says.

"As I approached them, you could see them writhing in their seats," she recalls.

But she was able to quickly transform their fear into comfort through humour.

"It's like in that one moment of being completely petrified they switched over to having all of this jocular confidence ... it was incredible," she says.

Aqsarniit Ujauttaq eyes up Austrian showcase following success performing at national event

Aqsarniit Ujauttaq (Northern Lights Gymnastics) has long had a motto: if you're going to dream, then you might as well dream big.

Now the team is seeing its biggest dreams come true.

The 19 members of Aqsarniit Ujauttaq

recently earned the opportunity to perform on a big stage when they took part in the Canadian Gymnaestrada showcase in Vancouver last month.

"We couldn't be more pleased with what they did," said coach Lisa Kresky.

This was the second time the girls performed outside of Rankin, having previously done a showcase in Las Vegas. Kresky

Keep fit for the summer

Iqaluit Iqaluit teens looking for an answer to the age-old question of what to do this summer have one and it's right on their doorstep.

The city's recreation department has opened up its TeenFit Drop-In program at the Iqaluit Curling Club and it all began on July 14. It's open to teens between the ages of 13 through 18 and is designed to teach foundational strength training, cardio and aerobic conditioning and develop strength and mobility.

The program is happening all summer long every Saturday

"The girls just got more and more excited to perform," said Kresky.

In total, the gymnasts did four routines over the course of the trip, including a performance

from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Youth softball on the go

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet More action on the diamond is up and running in Rankin Inlet for the community's youth.

The hamlet's recreation department started up its youth softball program on July 10 and will continue on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Rankin Inlet ball diamond.

Each day will have sessions for T-ball for players aged five through seven from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. and Little League for ages eight through 10 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

Equipment is provided for anyone who comes out to play but everyone who does play must be registered to take part.

The first doubleheader of games was on July 10 at the Rankin Inlet ball diamond with four teams in action. There are five teams in total for this year.

Games are scheduled to take place Monday through Thursday evenings beginning at 6:15 and 7:30 p.m. each night for the rest of the month with the qualifier for the Slo-Pitch National Canadian Championships in early August.

Showing off Arctic sports

Toronto The inaugural Masters Indigenous Games, which took place in Toronto from July 12 to 15, is complete and while Nunavut didn't send an official team, there was a presence from the territory.

Johnny Issaluk of Iqaluit was busy over the course of the weekend's festivities as the official Arctic sports ambassador.

He performed at the opening ceremonies at the Royal Ontario Museum and also did demonstrations throughout the cultural village.

There are those moments in sports where Yakety Sax is the most appropriate music bed to put under a highlight pack. July 9 was one of those times.

With all of the soccer focus on Russia, it was easy to forget that other action was happening, such as in the United Soccer League, which is the third tier of professional soccer in North America.

North Carolina FC was taking on the Charleston Battery and it was in stoppage time in the second half. North Carolina is on the attack, trying to find the equalizer late and managed to find almost every single way to not score.

It began with a save by the goalkeeper after it bounced off the defender's butt, followed by

a clearance off the line from another defender, followed by a hit goalpost, followed by a North Carolina player flubbing a shot, followed by a clearance.

Any takers on Benny Hill smiling down upon that sequence du crap?

And finally …

Good Idea: Celebrating an England victory.

It's peak 2018, folks. Is this what it's come to?

But this … this was the ultimate abomination. There were celebrations in London after England's win, which included fans, good and crocked, stomping and smashing the crap out of an ambulance. Stay classy, London. But one female fan stood out in particular. She got up and danced on the now-defiled rescue vehicle, cheered on by the mob. It's been confirmed her name is Larissa Bell and she's from Scotland.

I don't care why or what she was doing in London at the time because that's her business but why in the holy hell is someone from Scotland cheering for England? Gymnasts dreaming big in Rankin World, from page 16

Rankin Inlet's gymnastics club has been around for 14 years but this was the first year the team participated in the Gymnaestrada. Twelveyear-old McKay has almost been there from the beginning, having started in gymnastics with Kresky when she was two years old.

"I've been in gymnastics for a long time," said McKay. "(Gymnaestrada) is a brand new thing for me so it's very important to me."

Kresky emphasized that the Gymnaestrada was not a competition but a way for athletes to demonstrate their routines in front of new audiences.

"It's really designed for anyone who wants to be involved," said Kresky. "There was a team of people from Edmonton [whose youngest member] was 67 and the oldest guy was 86."

Kresky added that the trips are about so much more than gymnastics. They taught throat singing to a group of 300 people and were demonstrating Inuktitut on bus rides with other delegations. They also attended an event where they learned how to

write their names in Japanese.

"They were amazing ambassadors for Rankin Inlet and the Kivalliq region," said Kresky.

With the world showcase set to take place in Austria next summer, the girls are now turning to the monumental task of raising $150,000. That's how much it will cost to get an entire team of 19 girls, three chaperones and coach Kresky there and back.

"That's including all flights, accommodation, registration fees and uniforms," said Kresky.

Although it may seem like a huge amount of money, Kresky said the girls are going to do everything they can to raise the amount.

They are even looking at potentially getting some sponsors. Among the highlights of going to Austria would be the opportunity to perform alongside 2,000 other people from all over the world.

With almost exactly one year until the event in Austria, Kresky said the girls are already preparing their routine.

"Everyone came back really excited and looking forward to the possibilities in the future," said Kresky.
