Bend it like Sacto An ominous sky embellished with flashes of blood-red clouds blanketed the field at Saturday night’s Sacramento Republic FC soccer match. Perhaps it looked this way because of the King fire? Or maybe the lightning storm, which bared its teeth during the first half? Either way, Instagrams depicting the weather were more popular than the match itself at Cal Expo. The team was losing. In the playoffs. To its big rival in Los Angeles. Two to zero. A blowout.

But then came the rain. Not a downpour, but enough to make the crowd stand and cheer. Rain, holy crap! This was about 60 minutes into the semifinal against Galaxy II. The winner would go on to the UFL championship. High stakes.

And seemingly just as it began to rain, the Republic began scoring.

First, a penalty kick in the 64th minute. And then another, an equalizer.

The match was tied with minutes remaining. The Tower Bridge Battalion—the Republic’s most die-hard fans—banged drums, waved flags and stomped feet. What a comeback.

In the final stoppage minutes, Rodrigo Lopez was awarded a free kick. It shot off his foot, bent over the keeper’s outstretched glove and splashed into the net. We won, holy crap! Players sprinted toward the stands, incredulous. When the final whistle blew, they hopped a fence and high-fived the still-cheering fans. Unbelievable.

What a wild outcome—and one that just might mirror the fate of pro soccer in Sacramento. Out of nowhere, this city appears poised to seduce the MLS into letting us have an expansion team. Rich guys are going to build a stadium without public money. And now, the Republic just might take it all at this Saturday’s championship.

Hey, Sacramento: I believe that we will win. I believe that we will win.

I like to shabby-chic a lot of things. I bought an old, retro 1960s dresser. I went home and sanded it down and repainted it. It had the cool feet on it that popped out. I painted it this really cool turquoise color and gave it to my daughter. It is still there to this day.

I found a pair of $150 boots with little tread worn off the bottom, nearly new. They were all-leather with a very flat heel for $4.99. I got a brand-new REI jacket for six bucks, and you know REI. I don’t know what it retailed for. I just bought, just now, a Banana Republic peacoat.

Everything she says is true, and here are some more facts about domestic violence: Physical abuse is almost never a one-time incident or a fluke. It is usually preceded by verbal and emotional abuse, and escalates over time.

Most people who “just� batter their partner at first go on to batter their children.

The most dangerous time in an abusive relationship is when you try to leave. The abuser fears losing control of you.

If you know or even suspect that a child is being abused, call your local Child Protective Services. If you think someone is being abused right now, call your local police and ask them to do a welfare check. You needn’t give your name if you don’t want to.

That August day in the hospital, his surgeon removed breast tissue and sculpted Reece’s chest into a masculine-looking torso.

A longtime school-bus driver in the small farming community of Galt, Reece is navigating this long-awaited transformation at a time when others his age are checking off retirement bucket lists. “Once I realized I could transition … it was just like I had opened a big package with a bow on it and everything I wanted was in it,” he said.

But it hasn’t been easy. And Reece’s remarkable awakening is indicative of the issues facing a generation of LGBT baby boomers that came of age during a fraught political and social era.

“I think some people are worried about the crowd-control aspect,” acknowledged Sgt. Mike Wells of the Citrus Heights Police Department, which requisitioned an MRAP last year. “It’s not a tank.”

The “repurposed emergency rescue vehicle,” he said, isn’t outfitted with offensive weaponry and serves the same purpose as a Lenco BearCat armored personnel van for agencies that can’t afford the $650,000-plus price tag.

During the last decade, MRAPs served as constabulary weapons in an urban combat setting, explained William Vizzard, a Sacramento State University criminal justice professor and former law enforcement officer.

They were designed to patrol enemy highways and protect against roadside bombs.

Now that their tours are largely over, the military has a lot of these intimidating-looking rigs to unload. “They don’t know what to do with the damn MRAPs,” Vizzard said. “They really don’t belong on the battlefield.”

The question, now, is whether they belong on city streets.

Critics believe the 1033 Program and others like it allow municipal police forces across the country to collect military hardware better suited for brutalizing terrorists than intercepting car thieves. It took a gunned-down Missouri teenager and his city’s mournful anger to spark this conversation about the appropriate role of law enforcement.

during the height of the Occupy movement three years ago, a team of UC Berkeley data-crunchers says the way cops dress might have something to do with whether peaceful protests devolve into teargas-blasted riots.

“Thinking about Ferguson, our research will be able to show how the odds of violence increase drastically, for instance, when police show up in riot gear,” Nick Adams, principal investigator of the Deciding Force Project, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Cato Institute has attempted to quantify something similar with its National Police Misconduct Reporting Project, which scans news reports to produce daily summaries of alleged acts of police misconduct. An interactive map of “botched paramilitary” raids also culls media reports for instances where authorities reportedly detained or harmed innocent or nonviolent subjects.

In 2011, the map cited two examples in California. One involved an incident in Stockton in which authorities stormed the home of a man whose estranged wife had defaulted on student loans.

The map didn’t include another 2011 incident, from Davis, where federal authorities looking for a child pornographer kicked in the door of a home occupied by foreign students.

No arrests were made, but a young Chinese woman miscarried.

The pace and severity of surplus equipment flowing into Sacramento County has slowed since SN&R and others reported on this issue in 2012. Most of the big-ticket items coming here in recent years are used to dispose of explosives or repair helicopters, while tools, parts, combat boots and camping equipment remain perennial staples.

According to Children Now, an Oakland-based advocacy group, not many California counties seem to be signing up for a new pot of money that would level out a unique discrepancy in the way that foster providers are compensated.

As SN&R reported this past May, many foster relatives get nearly $500 less a month per child than non-relatives, due to a bureaucratic wrinkle that dates back to the 1990s (see “Foster Flub” by Raheem F. Hosseini, SN&R News, May 15, 2014).

In June, as part of the state budget signing, Gov. Jerry Brown carved out $30 million to right this wrong. But counties have to ask for the money by October 1 or continue paying relative caregivers substantially less.

If that happens, said California Now’s Susanna Kniffen, “foster youth and the family members who step up to care for them will be pushed deeper into poverty.”

She said these families could eventually be forced to give up the children they’ve taken in. “Often the foster youth is eventually placed in a group home at high cost to the state and county because these families cannot access the supports and services they need,” she added via email.

The Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services has already submitted a non-binding letter of intent to apply for state funding, said Child Protective Services deputy director Michelle Callejas. “We are waiting for the California Department of Social Services to define how they will determine each county’s base caseload and respective funding level,” she wrote in an email.

Understanding that methodology would be essential to making accurate cost projections, she added.

Kidsdata.org showed Sacramento County has at least 638 foster children living with relatives, but Children Now senior policy associate Tim Morrison believed that was likely a low figure.

Still, he said, only five other California counties have more foster children with relatives than Sacramento.

Deposit for the food bank How much pasta does $300,000 buy?

The Sacramento Food Bank is about to find out.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded the funds through its Community Food Projects program, which is geared toward increasing storage capacity and providing health and nutrition education for low-income families, according to a release from U.S. Rep. Doris Matsui’s office.

In the release, Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services president and CEO Blake Young said the money will be used to create a Health & Nutrition Center with a commercial teaching kitchen. It will also help the nonprofit triple its cold-storage capacity and double the area devoted for food processing and storage, he added.

The food bank serves 45,000 clients a month, the release states. (RFH)

Dear johns Sacramento County sheriff’s authorities handcuffed two dozen people during a prostitution sting last week at several locations along Stockton Boulevard.

Only two of the arrestees were female, indicating a focus on johns. So do the charges, as most—22 in all— were for soliciting prostitution, a misdemeanor.

On Thursday just before 7 a.m., only two days after a new state law mandating that cars give bicyclists three feet of elbow space, an SUV struck and killed a bike rider in south Sacramento.

Mayor Kevin Johnson, homelessness nonprofit Sacramento Steps Forward and Capital Christian Center’s senior pastor, Rick Cole, announced a plan to house more than 800 chronically homeless Sacramentans this week. The annual Winter Sanctuary Program, which starts on November 24 and goes through the end of March, provides shelter at faith-based organizations and churches. The group is hoping to raise $300,000, as it costs about $11 a night to give a homeless Sacramentan a bed.

Getting grabby On anti-vaxxers, herd immunity, strong-mayor BS and Sacramento’s rabble-rouser history Bites does not want to tell you how to raise your kids.

But, as a parent, Bites couldn’t help feeling a little queasy after learning that a high percentage of little Nibbles’ playmates haven’t had their shots. Thus increasing the risk of outbreaks of nasty diseases like measles and whooping cough.

For some, it’s a cultural thing. Anti-vaxxers are like the affluent, liberal version of climate deniers or birthers.

Public-health officials are freaked because the high number of exemptions may threaten the “herd immunity” that protects us from so many illnesses. The anti-vaxxers meanwhile sneer at our “herd mentality,” though they’re getting a free ride off everybody else’s shots.

You can look up vaccination rates at your kid’s school. The California Department of Public Health publishes the data on its website. KQED recently put a handy look-up tool on their site as well, accompanying a story about how the statewide vaccine refusal rate has doubled in the last seven years. Today, it’s about 3.15 percent, and California is seeing another whooping-cough epidemic—8,000 cases this year. A 2010 whooping-cough outbreak was caused in part by vaccine refuseniks.

At St. Hope’s Public School 7, the PBE rate for kindergartners is 6 percent, 13 percent at the California Montessori Project Capitol Campus. At the Alice Birney Waldorf-inspired elementary school, a public school mind you, the PBE rate is an alarming 32 percent.

But if the vaccination rate at your local school is somewhere in the neighborhood of South Sudan’s, it’s not clear that you can do much about it.

Bites does have one suggestion: How about a placard system like the county public-health folks put on restaurant doors? Schools with 99 percent vaccination rates get green placards.

Anything else in the 90s gets a yellow. And any school with double-digit non-vaccination rates gets a red placard on the schoolhouse door.

Again, Bites is not telling anyone how to take care of their kids. But give the rest of us the information we need to take care of ours.

A couple highlights from last week’s big SEIU Local 1000 forum on Measure L, the “strong mayor” ballot measure. First, they didn’t ban reporters this time—and yet Bites was still the only one there. Second, Mayor Kevin Johnson hates it when you call it a “power grab.”

“To say things like ‘L, No!’ or call it a ‘power grab,’ that kind of rabble-rousing language is just not Sacramento,” he warned.

Yes, Boss Johnson, because when people say you’re power-tripping, you really want to start playing language police, too.

And what would you prefer they call it? An “accountability grab?” Just doesn’t have the same ring.

As for idea that “rabble-rousing” language is somehow “not Sacramento” ... bullshit. James McClatchy roused hella rabble. Sacramento history is the history of rabble-rousers, from Lincoln Steffens to Mark Twain, William Burg and Bill Camp.

Oh, that’s right. Bill Camp is back from exile, after Johnson’s supporters temporarily removed him from his job as secretary of the Sacramento Central Labor Council, after Camp helped block CLC support of the strong-mayor plan.

Bites is not telling anyone how to take care of their kids. But give the rest of us the information we need to take care of ours.

As Mark Paul over at The California Fix put it, “When a business-dominated coalition can control the voice of labor, you know Sacramento is seeing an unprecedented change in its politics.”

Or maybe a return to an older political order. That’s one thought Bites had after reading Burg’s great new book Midtown Sacramento: Creative Soul of the City.

In it, Burg notes that Sacramento switched to district elections in 1970, which gave rise to neighborhood power and a countervailing force to the good ol’ boy business-dominated political establishment of the day.

Midtown is no dry political tract, though. It’s really a people’s history, about the local avant garde: artists, punks and urban pioneers who gave Sacramento its personality.

Including people like Jim and Delphine Cathcart, who came to Midtown in 1969, fought red-lining and city codes, sunk their own money and labor into old Victorians, helped to found the Sacramento Old City Association and to preserve and renew the central city.

If the name Cathcart sounds familiar, it’s probably because they were declared public enemies by the Douche Nation of Greater Sacramento for trying to stop public subsidies to the Sacramento Kings arena.

Burg’s book reminds us that we owe a lot of what is great about Sacramento to its rabble-rousers. Ω

Affordable housing in the urban core Or is it better economics to subsidize housing outside of the downtown grid?

Do we need to build more affordable housing in the central city?

SN&R co-editor Nick Miller thinks so. He wrote a solid, well-reasoned Editor’s Note on August 14 (“Talk is cheap”), pointing out that it currently costs $1,100 for a one-bedroom apartment with laundry facilities on the grid.

He asked, “Is that affordable? … How many baristas, single moms, painters, deejays, bartenders, hairstylists, servers, designers, underemployed dads, writers, retail workers, recovering addicts or bicycle technicians bring in that kind of money?”

Such an increase in owner-occupied units and rentals with more amenities would bring wealthier people downtown. And it would create a more balanced, diverse neighborhood, with the well-off and those living paycheck to paycheck right next door to each other. We don’t want all of the big spenders in Granite Bay. We need their wallets downtown.

Sotiris says the big problem we face is the cost of building housing downtown. Downtown housing, by definition, needs to be higher density. We cannot build a suburban housing tract in Midtown. Instead, we need to go up, building multistory dwellings. According to Sotiris, multistory buildings with structural or underground parking cost twice as much to build as a two-story apartment with surface parking. his one has all the ingredients of a dreamed-up Hollywood blockbuster: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist uncovers a big story involving drugs, the CIA and a guerrilla army. Despite threats and intimidation, he writes an explosive exposé and catches national attention. But the fates shift. Our reporter’s story is torn apart by the country’s leading media; he is betrayed by his own newspaper. Though the big story turns out to be true, the writer commits suicide and becomes a cautionary tale.

Kill the Messenger, an actual film coming soon to a theater near you, is the true story of Sacramento-based investigative reporter Gary Webb, who earned both acclaim and notoriety for his 1996 San Jose Mercury News series that revealed the CIA had turned a blind eye to the U.S.-backed Nicaraguan Contras trafficking crack cocaine in South

Central Los Angeles and elsewhere in urban America in the 1980s. One of the first-ever newspaper investigations to be published on the Internet, Webb’s story gained a massive readership and stirred up a firestorm of controversy and repudiation.

After being deemed a pariah by media giants like The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post, and being disowned by his own paper, Webb eventually came to work in August 2004 at SN&R. Four months later, he committed suicide at age 49. He left behind a grieving family—and some trenchant questions: Why did the media giants attack him so aggressively, thereby protecting the government secrets he revealed? Why did he decide to end his own life? What, ultimately, is the legacy of Gary Webb?

It’s the one where—after a year of tough investigative slogging that had taken him from the halls of power in Washington, D.C., to a moldering jail in Central America to the mean streets of South Central Los Angeles—Renner as Webb begins to actually write the big story. In an absorbing film montage, Renner is at the keyboard as it all comes together—the facts, the settings, the sources. The truth. It took the real Gary Webb a long time to get to this point in his career.

His father, a U.S. Marine, moved Webb around a lot in his youth, from California to Indiana to Kentucky to Ohio. He wound up marrying his high-school sweetheart, Sue Bell, with whom he had three children. Inspired by the reporting that uncovered Watergate and in need of income, he left college three units shy of a degree and went to work at The Kentucky Post, then The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, where he rose quickly through the ranks of grunt reporters.

Dogged in his pursuit of stories, Webb landed a job at the Mercury News in 1988 and became part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 1989 for reporting on the Loma Prieta earthquake.

It was the summer of 1996 when the lonewolf journalist handed his editors a draft of what would become the three-part, 20,000-word exposé “Dark Alliance.” The series was exhaustive and complex. But its nugget put human faces on how CIA operatives had been aware that the Contras (who had been recruited and trained by the CIA to topple the leftist Sandinista government in Nicaragua) had smuggled cocaine into the United States and, through drug dealers, fueled an inner-city crack-cocaine epidemic.

When “Dark Alliance” was published on August 18 of that year, it was as if a bomb had exploded at the Mercury News. That’s because it was one of the first stories to go globally viral online on the paper’s then state-of-the-art website. It was 1996; the series attracted an unprecedented 1.3 million hits per day. Webb and his editors were flooded with letters and

Like others working at our newsweekly in the brief time he was here, I knew Webb as a colleague and was terribly saddened by his death. Those of us who attended his unhappy memorial service at the Doubletree Hotel in Sacramento a week after he died thought that day surely marked a conclusion to the tragic tale of Gary Webb.

But no.

Because here comes Kill the Messenger, a Hollywood film starring Jeremy Renner as Webb; Rosemarie DeWitt as Webb’s then wife, Sue Bell (now Stokes); Oliver Platt as Webb’s top editor, Jerry Ceppos; and a litany of other distinguished actors, including Michael K. Williams, Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia and Robert Patrick. Directed by Michael Cuesta (executive producer of the TV series Homeland), the film opens in a “soft launch” across the country and in Sacramento on October 10.

Members of Webb’s immediate family—including his son Eric, who lives near Sacramento State and plans a career in journalism—expect to feel a measure of solace upon the release of Kill the Messenger.

“The movie is going to vindicate my dad,” he said.

For Renner—who grew up in Modesto and is best known for his roles in The Bourne Legacy, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, The Avengers and The Hurt Locker—the film was a chance to explore a part unlike any he’d played before. During a break in filming Mission Impossible 5, he spoke to SN&R about his choice to star in and co-produce Kill the Messenger.

“The story is important,” said Renner. “It resonated with me. It has a David and Goliath aspect.

“He was brave, he was flawed. … I fell in love with Gary Webb.”

“Gary’s story was the first Internet-age big journalism exposé,” said Nich Schou, who wrote the book Kill the Messenger, on which the movie is partially based, along with Webb’s own book version of the series, Dark Alliance. “If the series had happened a year earlier it, ‘Dark Alliance’ just would have come and gone,” said Schou.

As word of the story spread, black communities across America—especially in South Central—grew outraged and demanded answers.

At the time, crack cocaine was swallowing up neighborhoods whole, fueling an epidemic of addiction and crime. Rocked by the revelations, U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, congresswoman for Los Angeles’ urban core to this day, used her bully pulpit to call for official investigations.

But after a six-week honeymoon period for Webb and his editors, the winds shifted. The attacks began.

On October 4, The Washington Post stunned the Mercury News by publishing five articles assaulting the veracity of Webb’s story, leading the package from page one. A few weeks later, The New York Times joined with similar intent.

The ultimate injury came when the L.A. Times unleashed a veritable army of 17 journalists (known internally as the “Get Gary Webb Team”) on the case, writing a three-part series demolishing “Dark Alliance.” The L.A. paper— which appeared to onlookers to have missed a giant story in its own backyard—was exhaustive in its deconstruction, claiming the series “was vague” and overreached. “Oliver Stone, check your voice mail,” summed Post media columnist Howard Kurtz.

Now, even some of Webb’s supporters admitted that his series could have benefited from more judicious editing. But why were the “big three” so intent on tearing down Webb’s work rather than attempting to further the story, as competing papers had done back in the day when Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein broke the Watergate scandal?

Some say it was the long arm of then President Ronald Reagan and his team’s ability to manipulate the gatekeepers of old media to its purposes. (Reagan had, after all, publicly compared the Contras to “our Founding Fathers” and supported the CIA-led attempt to topple the Sandinista government.)

Others say that editors at the “big three” were simply affronted to have a midsize paper like the Mercury News beat them on such a big story.

An article in the Columbia Journalism Review claimed some L.A. Times reporters bragged in the office about denying Webb a Pulitzer.

One of their big criticisms was that the story didn’t include a comment from the CIA. When reporters at the big three asked the agency if Webb’s story was true, they were told no. The denial was printed in the mainstream media as if it were golden truth.

Other issues fueled controversy around Webb’s story. For example: It was falsely reported in some media outlets—and proclaimed by many activists in the black community—that Webb had proven the CIA was directly involved in drug trafficking that targeted blacks. He simply did not make this claim.

In some ways, Webb became the first reporter ever to benefit from, and then become the victim of, a story that went viral online.

After triumphing in the early success of the series, Webb’s editors at the Mercury News became unnerved and eventually backed down under the pressure. Jerry Ceppos, the paper’s executive editor, published an unprecedented column on May 11, 1997, that was widely considered an apology for the series, saying it “fell short” in editing and execution.

When contacted by SN&R, Ceppos, now dean of the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University, said he was only barely aware of the film coming out and wasn’t familiar with the acting career of Oliver Platt, who plays him in the movie. “I’m the wrong person to ask about popular culture,” he said.

Asked if he would do anything differently today regarding Gary Webb’s series, Ceppos, whose apologia did partially defend the series, responded with an unambiguous “no.”

Some find irony in the fact that Ceppos, in the wake of the controversy, was given the 1997 Ethics in Journalism Award by the Society of Professional Journalists.

Webb, once heralded as a groundbreaking investigative reporter, was soon banished to the paper’s Cupertino bureau, a spot he considered “the newspaper’s version of Siberia.” In 1997, after additional run-ins with his editors, including their refusal to run his follow-up reporting on the “Dark Alliance” series, he quit the paper altogether.

But a year later, he was redeemed when CIA’s inspector general, Frederick Hitz, released his 1998 report admitting that the CIA had known all along that the Contras had been trafficking cocaine. Reporter Robert Parry, who covered the Iran-Contra scandal for the Associated Press, called the report “an extraordinary admission of institutional guilt by the CIA.” But the revelation fell on deaf ears.

It went basically unnoticed by the newspapers that had attacked Webb’s series. A later internal investigation by the Justice Department echoed the CIA report.

But no apology was forthcoming to Webb, despite the fact that the central finding of his series had been proven correct after all.

It was years later when Landesman showed the screenplay to Renner, whose own production company, The Combine, decided to co-produce it. Focus Features, which is owned

by Universal, now has worldwide rights to the movie Kill the Messenger.

“When Jeremy Renner got involved,” said Schou, “everything started rolling.”

It was the summer of 2013 when Stokes and Webb’s children—Eric, his older brother Ian and younger sister Christine—flew to Atlanta for three days on the film company’s dime to see a scene being shot.

“The first thing [Renner] did when he saw us was come up and give us hugs and introduce himself,” said Eric. “He called us ‘bud’ and ‘kiddo’ like my dad used to. … He even had the tucked-in shirt with no belt, like my dad used to wear. And I was like, ‘Man, you nailed that.’”

The scene the family watched being filmed, according to Stokes, was the one where Webb’s Mercury News editors tell him “they were gonna back down from the story.”

“I was sitting there watching and thinking back to the morning before that meeting,” said Stokes. “Gary was getting nervous [that day]. He said, ‘I guess I should wear a tie and jacket’ to this one. He was nervous but hopeful that they would let him move forward with the story.”

Of course, they did not.

After a pause, Stokes said: “It was hard watching that scene and remembering the emotions of that day.”

Just a few months ago, in June, Webb’s family flew to Santa Monica to see the film’s “final cut” at the Focus Features studio. All were thoroughly impressed with the film and the acting. “Jeremy Renner watched our home videos,” said Eric. “He studied. All these little words and gestures that my dad used to do—he did them. I felt like I was watching my dad.”

When asked how playing the role of Gary Webb compared to his usual action-adventure parts (such as in The Bourne Legacy), Renner said it was like “apples and oranges” to compare the two, but then admitted, “I can say this one was more emotionally challenging.”

Renner laughed when asked about the impressive cast he’d managed to round up for a comparatively low-budget movie and how he was “going to be washing a whole lot of people’s cars and doing their laundry.”

Stokes has no regrets about the film.

“Seeing a chapter of your life, with its highs and lows, depicted on the big screen is something you never think is going to happen to you,” she said. “It was all very emotional.

“But I loved the movie. And the kids were very happy with how it vindicated their father.”

Said Renner, “If [the family gets] closure or anything like that … that’s amazing.”

Earlier this month, Webb’s son Eric, 26, opened the door to his Sacramento rental home with a swift grab for the collar of his affable pit-bull mix, Thomas. Eric—lanky at 6 feet 4 inches, with his father’s shaggy brown hair and easy expression—attended college at American River College and hopes to become a journalist someday. He was happy to sit down and discuss the upcoming film.

To Eric, the idea that a movie was being made about his dad was nothing new. He’d heard it all at least a dozen times before.

Paramount Pictures had owned the rights to Dark Alliance for a while before Universal Studios took it on.

“I stopped expecting it,” said Eric.

Webb’s ex-wife, Stokes, now remarried and still living in Sacramento, had heard it all before, too.

“I’d get discouraged,” she said, “but I never really gave up hope.”

Things finally took off almost eight years ago, when screenwriter Peter Landesman called author Schou, now managing editor at the OC Weekly, about his not-yet-published book about Webb.

Landesman was hot to write a screenplay about Webb’s story, said Schou.

‘I’ve shot that gun so I know’ It was an otherwise routine Friday morning in December 2004 when Eric Webb was called out of class at Rio Americano High School.

The then 16-year-old was put on the phone with his mother, who told him he needed to leave campus immediately and go straight to his grandmother’s house.

“I told her, ‘I’m not going anywhere until you tell me what happened,’” said Eric. So she told him about his dad.

“He killed himself,” she said.

Eric had the family BMW that day, so he floored it over to his father’s Carmichael home—the one his dad had been scheduled to clear out of that very day. Webb had just sold it with the alleged plan of saving money by moving into his mother’s home nearby.

“I needed a visual confirmation for myself,” said Eric. He pulled up to the house and saw a note in his dad’s handwriting on the door. It read, “Do not enter, please call the police.” Eric went inside and saw the blood, “but his body had already been taken,” he said.

For his children and Stokes, nothing was ever the same. And almost 10 years later, questions still reverberate around Gary Webb’s death.

It’s clear from all who knew him well that he suffered from severe depression. Some— like Stokes—believe in retrospect that Webb was also likely ill with undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Still, why did he do it? What makes a man feel despair enough to take his own life?

After leaving the Mercury News in ’97, Webb couldn’t get hired at a daily. After writing his book, he eventually found a position working for the California Legislature’s task force on government oversight. When he lost that job in February 2004, a depression he’d fought off for a long while settled in, said Stokes.

Though divorced in 2000, the couple remained friendly. On the day that would have been their 25th anniversary, he turned to her, utterly distraught, after hearing he’d lost the job.

“He was crying, ‘I lost my job, what am I gonna do?’” she said. He knew the development would make it tough to stay in Sacramento near his children. She urged him to regroup and apply again at daily newspapers.

Surely, she thought, the controversy over his series would have waned by now.

But when Webb applied, not even interviews were offered.

“Nobody would hire him,” she said. “He got more and more depressed. He was on antidepressants, but he stopped taking them in the spring,” said Stokes. “They weren’t making him feel any better.”

It was August when Webb finally got work as a reporter at SN&R. Though he hadn’t set out to work in the world of weekly journalism, with its lesser pay and more hit-and-miss prestige, he was a productive member of the staff until near the end. During his short time with SN&R, he wrote a few searing cover stories, including “The Killing Game,” about the U.S. Army using first-person shooter video games as a recruitment tool.

In fact, Eric edited a book in 2011 for Seven Stories Press, The Killing Game, that included 11 stories his father had written for various publications, including SN&R. “I was always happy to see his covers,” said Eric, attending high school at the time. “We got SN&R on our campus, and I would be like, “Hey, my dad’s on the front page. That’s awesome.’”

It was the morning of December 10 when SN&R’s editorial assistant Kel Munger entered editor Tom Walsh’s office with word that Gary’s son had just called saying, “Somebody needs to tell the boss that my dad killed himself.”

Within a few hours, SN&R was fielding press calls from all around the country, said Munger. A week later, it was she who had the thankless job of cleaning out Webb’s work cubicle so as to pass his belongings on to his ex-wife and kids. “There was bundled-up research material, a bunch of Detroit hockey paraphernalia, photos of his kids. … I remember he had a 2004 Investigative Reporter’s Handbook with Post-it notes throughout.”

“I was having a hard time keeping it together,” said Munger. “Like everyone else, I’d been looking forward to getting to know him.”

In the days following his death, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office came out with a preliminary finding that was meant to cease the flood of calls to his office. The report “found no sign of forced entry or struggle” and stated the cause of death as “self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head.”

But it was too late to stop the conspiracy theorists. The CIA wanted Webb dead, they hypothesized, so the agency must have put a “hit” out on him. To this day, the Internet is full of claims that Webb was murdered. The fact that Webb had fired two shots into his own head didn’t dampen the conjectures.

Said Eric, “The funny part is, never once has anybody from the conspiracy side ever contacted us and said, ‘Do you think your dad was murdered?’”

The family knew what Webb had been through; they knew he had been fighting acute depression. They learned he’d purchased cremation services and put his bank account in his ex-wife’s name. They knew that the day before his suicide he had mailed letters, sent to his brother Kurt in San Jose, that contained personal messages to each family member.

Receiving the letters “was actually a big relief for us,” said Eric. “We knew it was him.

They were typed by him and in his voice. It was so apparent. The things he knew, nobody else would know. … He even recommended books for me to read.”

According to Eric, the “two gunshots” issue is “very explainable,” because the revolver Webb had fired into his head, a .38 Special police addition his Marine father had owned, has double action that doesn’t require a shooter to re-cock to take a second shot.

“I’ve shot that gun so I know,” said Eric, who said his father taught him to shoot on a camping trip. “Once you cock the trigger, it goes ‘bang’ real easily. … You could just keep on squeezing and it would keep on shooting.”

In Kill the Messenger, Webb’s death goes unmentioned until after the final scene, when closing words roll onto the screen. Renner said he felt it would have been a disservice to the viewer to “weigh in too heavy” with details of the death. Including Webb’s demise would have “raised a lot of questions and taken away from his legacy,” he said.

‘Stand up and risk it all’ It was eight days after Webb’s death when a few hundred of us gathered in Sacramento Doubletree Hotel’s downstairs conference room for an afternoon memorial service.

My own distress at Webb’s passing wasn’t fully realized until my eyes lit on his Pulitzer Prize propped on a table just inside the entryway. It was the first one I’d ever seen. I wondered how many more exceptional stories he could have produced if things had gone differently.

Praise for the absent journalist—his smarts, guts and tenacity—flowed from friends, colleagues and VIPs at the event.

A statement from now U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, then a senator, had been emailed to SN&R: “Because of [Webb]’s work, the CIA launched an Inspector General’s investigation that found dozens of troubling connections to drug-runners.

That wouldn’t have happened if Gary Webb hadn’t been willing to stand up and risk it all.”

And Rep. Waters, who spent two years following up on Webb’s findings, wrote a statement calling him “one of the finest investigative journalists our country has ever seen.”

When Hollywood weighs in soon on the Webb saga, the storm that surrounded him in life will probably be recycled in the media and rebooted on the Internet, with old and new media journalists, scholars and conspiracy theorists weighing in from all sides.

But the film itself is an utter vindication of Webb’s work.

Renner was hesitant to say if those who watch Kill the Messenger will leave with any particular take-home lesson. “I want the audience to walk away and debate and argue about it all,” he said of his David and Goliath tale. And then, “I do believe [the film] might help create some awareness and accountability in government and newspapers.”

And what would the real live protagonist of Kill the Messenger have thought of it all?

It’s at least certain he’d have been unrepentant. In the goodbye letter his ex-wife received on the day of his suicide, Gary Webb told her: “Tell them I never regretted anything I wrote.” | 09.25.14

For some, the social networking site has evolved into an altar that pays homage to the dead.

One writer discovers how, even amid questions about privacy and digital rights, Facebook has become a shrine to the dead

friend of mine died this past August. Instead of learning about it via a phone call from a friend or family member, I found out about

her death on Facebook, when I noticed that mutual passing. She was only 39 years old and the first friend I made when I moved to Sacramento, 17 years ago. I hadn’t spoken to her in over a decade.

It’s also a place to keep memories alive, even as the social network’s policies raise questions about privacy and digital rights.

As I read through remembrances left on my friend’s page, thoughts of her came back into the forefront and she emerged as a whole person again.

When I first found out that she had passed, I felt sadness, but not a sense of mourning.

Now, after visiting the virtual imprint she left behind, I cried. She was real to me again.

Since its inception in 2004, Facebook has grown into a social-networking force that boasts more than 1 billion members globally. So, perhaps it’s not surprising then that it’s also become a place to remember those who have left us. The longer Facebook exists, the more often we see

As soon as I found out, I visited her profile page. As I scrolled through the dozens of posts from friends and co-workers that had known her over the past 10-plus years, not only did I catch a glimpse into some of the things she’d done before her death—a big move, a new job, etc.—but it also brought her back to life for me. It had been so long since I’d last spoken with my friend. She was little more than a memory before I visited her Facebook page.

Facebook is this strange beast that we are trying to tame when it comes to issues of privacy and rights to personal content. It is a way for high-school sweethearts to rekindle their romance, a place for long-distance friendships to stay relevant, and even a way for parents to keep track of their kids—much to their dismay.

Sacramento artist Trina Fernandez recently lost a friend to cancer. She discovered that her friend was dying through a status update from her friend’s spouse. When she learned that her friend only had a week to live, Fernandez sat down and wrote a physical letter to her instead of a message through the social-networking site.

“I didn’t want to send something so impersonal,” Fernandez said. “I felt like a physical letter was more reflective of our relationship than a Facebook message.”

Still, Fernandez was able to use the site as a means to keep track of her friend’s status on a daily basis, leading up to her death. When cancer finally claimed the woman’s life, the husband posted a poem his wife had written along with the date of her death.

“It was very uplifting, but sad,” Fernandez said.

After, Fernandez visited her friend’s Facebook profile and read remembrances posted by others.

“A lot of people were saying things about her [in] memory,” Fernandez said, adding that she wished people had said those things to her beforehand instead of after she had died.

“They only posted things after she passed away,” she added. “Wouldn’t they have wanted to share that with her before now?”

Facebook allows users to memorialize the account of a deceased person.

The social-networking site’s help page outlines the ways in which the service allows friends and family members to view the person’s profile.

Previously, when a page was memorialized, Facebook restricted its visibility only to verified friends of the deceased, and even then only offered limited content. For example, friends could no longer see old status updates.

In February of this year, however, the company added a feature which keeps the account as-is and viewable to the public. According to a press release on the subject, the new Facebook policy “will allow people to see memorialized profiles in a manner consistent with the deceased person’s expectations of privacy.”

Now, users can send private messages to the deceased and family members can memorialize a deceased person’s Facebook page by filling out a form and submitting an obituary.

Facebook then “locks” the account so that it is no longer accessible, even to those who previously had authorized access. The profile page can no longer

be modified. Simply put, users can no longer add or remove pictures, add or remove friends, or delete any status updates that were there before the page was memorialized, not even a family member.

Facebook’s policy regarding access to the content after a person dies brings up new issues. Family and friends essentially lose the rights to that media.

Anthony Lew, a Sacramento-based legal consultant for the California State Assembly, noted that Facebook’s policy, as well as those of other tech companies with similar rules, are contentious.

While there have been prior attempts in California to pass legislation regarding postmortem digital access to the likes of email or online “cloud” storage, none have been successful.

“None of it really got off of the ground because major tech companies, like Google and Facebook, opposed efforts to regulate it,” Lew said.

In August, however, Delaware became the first state to pass a related law drafted by the Uniform Law Commission, a national organization that drafts model laws, which can then be implemented across all states.

A beer field trip

Lew has a personal interest in the issue: A former law-school colleague was killed when a truck hit her while she was riding her bicycle in Seattle. Lew discovered the news via Facebook. When he visited his friend’s profile after her death, however, he found little evidence of her passing.

“There wasn’t really any remembrance posted on her profile, if you looked at her Facebook page right now, you couldn’t even tell she had passed away,” he said.

“She had just gotten married and she and her partner have a sevenmonth-old daughter,” he noted. “The last thing she posted was a picture of her with her wife and her baby.”

In a way, a person’s Facebook profile keeps him or her alive in our memories in a way that humanity has never experienced before. Previously, we could only visit a grave or lay flowers near an accident site. We had to physically participate in remembrances.

Thanks to the Facebook phenomenon, however, online users can visit a deceased friend or loved one anytime and from anywhere. With just a click of a mouse, they can watch videos of loved ones playing with kids, view

OK, so we all know that after hitting the bars downtown, driving home isn’t a very good option. Pedaling that little beach cruiser home doesn’t seem like a good idea, either.

But taking a pub crawl downtown on a trolley-esque bicycle that rides in the middle of traffic, decked out with disco lights and club music alongside 14 of your closest friends?

It’s a total go—one made possible thanks to Sac Brew Bike.

When my friends and I saw the party bike cruising down J Street one night, we knew we had to try it. For $25 each, we could join a pub crawl that would take us to three local breweries (the bike makes several trips daily). For a group of college students living on an instant ramen diet, the price seemed a bit steep, but we also figured it was too much fun to miss.

A few days later, as we waited for the bike to show, we felt excited and antsy. This was probably the closest most of us have had to a field trip since the sixth grade.

The bike arrived and it was huge. How were we expected to pedal that thing in traffic for the next two hours, fueled only by beer and foot power? The driver assured us we would be fine, and everyone hopped on. Before we could leave, however, she told us she needed to lay down a few rules: “Always wear your seat belt!

Suddenly, our boozy field trip started to feel like more my fourth-grade visit to the train museum. Then the really sad news came.

“No booze on the bike.”

How could a brew bike exist without endless taps of beer en route? We sulked for a moment. One man whispered to me that he was going to have to put away the Fireball he’d brought for “pre-gaming.” Our driver explained it was state law, but insisted we’d still have fun.

Luckily, she was right. As soon as we left, it felt like a party started. Music blared, the wind blew in our hair and people walking by cheered as they took our photos. Bar owners jumped outside along our route, begging for us to pull over. As one rider put it, we became the unofficial cool crowd of Midtown.

The first stop was Der Biergarten on K Street, where it felt like we were part of a human petting zoo. When we disembarked, people cheered, handed us beers, asked questions and stroked the “Brew Bike” stickers on our chests. The stickers were supposed to give us a discount on beers, but that turned out to be unnecessary, thanks to all the free pints we scored.

Then everything started to blur. The free beer got us drunk pretty fast, and even all the pedaling wasn’t enough to sober me up.

But that’s OK, because riding that thing drunk was even more fun.

We almost ran a red light, and chewed out the driver of a car that tried to cut us off. Some man called me Fran Drescher and we fought for half the ride, but made up by singing “Don’t Stop Believin’” together. We were like a drunken choir, preaching karaoke classics to the people of Midtown.

The last thing I remember was being dragged back from Tank House BBQ & Bar by a Justin Bieber look-alike, because I kept begging the cook for barbecue ribs.

So, yeah, a good night and a great ride.

Then, it aspired to be a hip place with affordable, modern food located in the Handle District. The menu was met with as much apathy and reticence as the term “Handle District.”

So here we are again.

The space Capital Dime inhabits has undergone more costume changes than Carrie rating: Bradshaw. There’s a forced urban insouciance HHHH that encourages a convivial vibe geared towards the 30- to 50-something crowd willing to spend dinner for one: money on top-shelf liquor. $15 - $25 The menu boasts about being farm-to-fork, a concept that is rather ubiquitous these days, but welcome nonetheless. (Plus, I hear the local visitors bureau runs your restaurant out of town if it isn’t.)

It also aims to stick with Capital Dime the First’s original intent: good food for $10. Unless it’s a sammich, then more like $12, plus $3 if you want fries. Then add tax and tip. Oh, and H drinks. A duck burger with fig jam and plenty of crispy onions makes for a gamy change of pace. The favorite of the night was the rib bacon whiskey burger. Weighed down with smoked rib bacon, crunchy lumps of housemade pickle, cheddar and a landslide of crispy fried onions, this might be the best burger I have ever had in Sacramento. Something I don’t say lightly.

A curious king oyster mushroom Reuben with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and tangy Thousand Island dressing melds together beautifully. If all vegetarian food tasted like this, I would never miss meat. Bacon and oysters included.

Brunch is a fantastic event best armed with bottomless mimosas. The biscuits and gravy are a savory start to the morning. Best to avoid the baked French toast; it’s a sugar bomb that could kill a diabetic through skin contact alone. For the most part, the avid bruncher will be quite happy with the menu.

A comfort food more commonplace in flyover country and on the East Coast, a good pierogi is a rare treat in California.

Blackbird is back with chefowner Carina Lampkin again at the helm. It’s located in its original space with a similar aesthetic, though with more focus on beer and bar food to better complement the seafood-inspired dinner menu.

A burger served with house pickles, seven-day housecured bacon, cheddar and sweet ’n’ chivey “awesome sauce” make for one of the city’s best burgers, no question. Chowder fries, however, are nifty in theory—fries covered in bay shrimp, bacon and parsley, then doused with chowder. It’s a play on poutine, but a lack of acid and serious sogginess issues mar it from being a landmark dish.

Better yet? Fish tacos featuring fried pollock served with pickled cabbage and chipotle crema. These and a beer will remedy any bad day you’re having. American. 1015 Ninth St., (916) 498-9224. Dinner for one: $10-$30. HHH1/2 G.M.

Cafe Plan B This Midtown iteration of the popular Plan B Restaurant in Arden Arcade brings to mind old-school French dining. This should not be read as an insult.

The menu runs with salads, sandwiches, mains and appetizers—however, the highlight is the generous array of mussels served in both modern and classic fashion. The épicé mussels are served in a thick tomato sauce with a rumbling chili-garlic heat. Coconutbroth mussels are sweet and tangy and worth a visit.

A white-anchovy tartelette with shredded fennel and leek dazzles—it’s the sort of light food welcomed in triple-digit heat. The puff pastry it sits on is a means to an end.

Most of its boards and plates are balanced using three basic tastes: salty (meats and cheeses), sweet (honey and jam) and sour (pickles and vinegar). East Sacramento Fahrenheit 250 BBQ This barbecue joint ups the ante with attentive table service and highend ingredients. Chef Jacob Carriker serves Southern staples such as pulled pork, brisket and ribs, plus the very California addition of smoked tri-tip. There’s also chicken and trout—all smoked in a 7-foot hand-forged steel behemoth.

The pulled-pork sandwich is moist, smoky and falling apart with tenderness. The halfchicken is a bit dry, but benefits from a shot of sauce. The tritip is well-smoked, but not as good as the brisket, although it still makes for a very nice addition to the Market salad, with baby greens, grilled zucchini and onions, and cornbread croutons. Der Biergarten This spot is a slightly quirky, low-key place with only nine food items on the menu: four appetizerstyle options, four sandwichtype offerings and a sausage platter, plus about 30 cold ones on tap. Patrons order from a building that was built from a couple of cargo containers and dine outdoors on communal benches, traditional German biergarten style. The Derfinater Dog is a gussied-up hot dog, and despite its seemingly excessive number of toppings, everything serves a tasteful purpose. The mayo and garlic sauce help moisten a somewhat dry roll, and the bacon adds saltiness, which balances the sweetness of cream cheese and barbecue sauce. The pretzel disappoints by being a bit on the flaky and brittle side. The sausage platter is the best item on the menu: a pork sausage, chicken sausage, and a veal-and-pork sausage— much more plump, juicy and flavorful than the frankfurters—served alongside piles of sauerkraut and German potato salad. Land Park/ Curtis Park Pangaea Bier Cafe Just as European wines are made to be enjoyed with food rather than sipped alone, the current tsunami of European-style microbreweries feature drinks often best quaffed alongside a well-crafted meal.

Pangaea Bier Cafe recently stepped up its food game to satisfy that need with a revamped menu that includes an ever-changing rotation of seasonal, slightly upscale pub food. Try the Buffalo wings: They’re deeply flavorful fried

Bodhi Bowl This Vietnamese eatery’s menu is all vegetarian and mostly vegan, with plenty of high notes. The Heavenly Noodle is a can’t-go-wrong salad comprising snow-white vermicelli noodles with cooling mint, cucumber slices, house-roasted peanuts and jagged pieces of faux beef. The “beef” actually is slightly sweet, plenty umami and pleasantly inoffensive, as far as fake meat goes.

Nearly everything here has a faux-meat product or tofu element. So, sorry diners with soy allergies—it can’t even be escaped in the papaya salad. Not an issue?

The sushi rolls here are Western style—a.k.a. loaded with toppings. Try the Mufasa roll. With crab and avocado on the inside and salmon and sauce outside, it’s particularly tasty, seasoned in sesame oil and baked—a somewhat unusual technique for sushi. Japanese.

Fries-slash-chips arrived pencil-thin and fiercely crispy. If you visit for brunch, don’t miss the signature bloody mary: a 32-ounce bloody mary that doesn’t skimp on the horseradish. It’s served with skewers of beetpickled egg, sausage and bacon, tiger prawn, pickled veggies, and the most amazing slider.

Arden/ Carmichael Dad’s Kitchen The cooking at this Guy Fieri-approved joint is consistent and at times technically terrific. Try the Dad’s Burger (lettuce, red onion, tomato, Aleppo chili aioli, and a beef patty encrusted with blue cheese and bacon). With a firm and chewy bun and a sauce with kick, it’s one of Sac’s best burgers. Or get the Hot Blonde. It’s like a subtle, healthier version of a club sandwich, with organic chicken, avocado, spinach, cucumber, roasted onion and

and Sterling Caviar. The offerings, which include the likes of lamb, steak and pasta, change monthly, but the highlights are the chefs’ tasters—small bites scattered throughout the dining area. A recent visit included oyster, faux lasagna bites, citrusy duck, and “kettle corn” cones of puffed wild rice, amaranth and corn with black-truffle caramel, which tasted sweet, salty and positively deadly. Roseville Rose Garden Chinese Restaurant

The Kitchen Diners here don’t receive a menu: They receive a program, divided into seven acts, and, yes, there’s an intermission. Guests all eat together, like a reservations-only giant dinner party, dining on seasonal dishes such as chilled, minty pea soup, served with creamy pea pudding, cured scallops

Service here is eager and friendly, and the food is flavorful. Chicken chow mein is a standout. The restaurant really does noodles well. They are chewy and fresh, tossed with tender breast meat and well-cooked vegetables. Try the Kung pao chicken. It’s packed with large, tender chunks of white meat offset by crunchy peanuts and water chestnuts.

Toothsome diced zucchini and a well-balanced sauce complete the dish. Vegetables are a strong point, always fresh, expertly cooked, and varied. A prime example is the broccoli with garlic sauce. The large florets retain some crunch and swim in a slightly sweet broth that’s perfect with steamed rice. Another fine choice is the

they practically melted. The chicken tasted rich with dark meat and subtle spice, while the carnitas are flavorful but tend toward dryness. There are also fried fish tacos here.

The Guadalajaran influence also shows in several shrimp dishes. We tried the grilled and garlic preparations, both served with buttery rice studded with corn, peas, carrots, and plenty of sautéed peppers and onions. We loved the slightly charred flavor of the grilled shrimp, while the garlic ones were marred by an off-flavor that indicated they were past their prime. The beans that accompany many of the entrees are Jaliscostyle peruanos. These little yellowish beans were perfectly al dente and served in their own flavorful broth alongside expertly cooked plain rice.

Rocklin Il Pizzaiolo This Rocklin place just might serve the best pie in town.

The menu boasts four “red” pizzas (with crushed tomatoes) and four “white” pizzas (without tomatoes). The Cinque Terre (anchovies, capers, mozzarella, olive oil and red sauce) packed a powerful salty and fishy flavor that might surprise the uninitiated. The Pancetta, with white sauce, was more muted with a simple earthiness from mushrooms, pancetta, Parmesan cheese and olive oil. The lovely crust is flat and wasn’t as thin as most of the pizzas I had on vacation in Italy earlier this year. But it’s pillowy soft and thoroughly doughy—as if to convert fans of American pizza over to Neopolitan. The Salsiccia is a must-try. With its sweet fennel sausage and pickled peppers, it offered the most balanced taste. There’s also an option to create your own pizza from a few dozen topping choices.

The unbearable cuteness of being Red Panda day One might assume that being an adorable, tree-lounging mammal often referred to as a “red catbear” makes for a pretty neat exisANIMALS tence, but life as a red panda isn’t all snacking on bamboo and being an independent cat-bear until it’s time to mate. For starters, the sole living species of the Ailurus ailuridae family is also often referred to as a “lesser panda” (rude!) despite it not being closely related to the giant panda. Beyond that, it’s classified as a threatened species, with fewer than 10,000 mature red pandas living in the wild.

The Sacramento Zoo aims to raise awareness around the muchadored species, which continues to be threatened by poachers and habitat loss by celebrating Red Panda Day. Attendees can participate in various educational activities in order to be named a “Red Panda Ranger” and can create a red-panda-themed flag that will adorn the exhibit. Visitors will also have the opportunity to partake in a raffle and silent auction featuring art, home décor and other redpanda-themed keepsakes. And of course, you’ll get to feast your eyes upon the cuteness of these fox-bear-racoon-cat-looking little guys, who have the ability to stand for seconds at a time on their hind legs and make cartoonish chirping and squeaking sounds. Should I confess in the hope we can work through it and become closer?

I am afraid that he may be retaliatory towards me or toward the chiropractor. Do you think we should separate?

Your work now is to learn how to stand up for yourself. You will need self-love and a big dose of honesty when you tell your husband about your affair. Yes, he deserves to know and you deserve the experience of practicing how to talk about, and take responsibility for, your choices. If your husband is angry, don’t yell or plead. Let him experience his feelings. When his emotions subside, consider a fresh beginning together. Neither of you really know the other, so a different life together is possible. But if you can’t or don’t want to mend your marriage, find a way to divorce that leaves your heart (and his) lighter and more joyful. Ω

Red Abstract expressionist Mark Rothko is often represented as a brusque, condescending bully as well as an immensely talented painter. It’s how he’s by Patti Roberts written in John Logan’s Tony Award-winning play Red, and also portrayed by Steve Buri in his noteworthy performance for Ovation Stage’s production of Red. This two-person, no-intermission play is powerful both in material and in delivery. And it’s made all the more intense in the small Three Penny Theatre, where you feel like a fly on Rothko’s 1958 studio wall, witnessing volatile outbursts aimed at his young art assistant. To add authenticity, the compact stage is lined with reproductions of his renowned large, red-infused paintings which Rothko layers with both massive amounts of paint and his internal emotional pain.

asshole—someone we begin to understand, but don’t particularly like. It’s a skillful performance, though it could use a wee bit of subtlety at times. And Burrow aptly demonstrates the progression from naïve painter’s assistant to someone who finally outgrows his mentor. Ω

4 The Merchant of Venice Thursday, September 25, marks the 25th anniversary of Ed Claudio’s Actor’s Workshop of Sacramento—which has both a theater arm and a workshop arm. Claudio, whose theatrical career spans more than 40 years, trained with the famed Stella Adler in New York City, and appeared off-Broadway in The Merchant of Venice.

It’s appropriate then, that Claudio is marking this anniversary with a re-staging of Shakespeare’s great drama. He’s starring as Shylock, the Jewish moneylender whose demand for a pound of flesh for an unpaid debt sparks much of the drama and controversy in the play. It has been called anti-Semitic for its portrayal of the Jew as a usurer, preying upon others’ misfortune.

Claudio’s delivery of Shylock’s great “I am a Jew” soliloquy (“If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?”) is reason enough to see this play. But there is much more to commend it. The play is set in the late 1920s in Venice and Belmont, Calif., giving opportunity for many eye-popping costumes (by Laura Luke, Christine Lovette and Ray Tatar). Luke’s ingenious stage design also is very effective.

The large cast includes many of Claudio’s workshop students and varies in its mastery of Shakespeare’s language, but Laura Woodruff (Portia), Jeff Machado (Bassanio), Katie Walton (Nerissa) and Kevin Frame (Lorenzo) have natural stage presence as well as strong deliveries.

Art and anger

Red captures a pivotal moment in Rothko’s career as he becomes a commercial commodity when commissioned to paint a group of murals for the exclusive Four Seasons Restaurant. And at the same time, he senses he’s becoming passé as ’60s pop art begins to enter the scene. As a literary device, Red introduces us to a young assistant, Ken (Kyle Burrow), who admires and then challenges Rothko’s theories of art, philosophies of life, the core of the artistic spirit, and artistic hypocrisies.

The play presents provocative, powerful and heady intellectual issues, with emotions mirrored by the classical music constantly played in Rothko’s studio: What’s art? Who is the real interpreter of the art—the painter or the viewer? What is artistic authenticity?

Not as dreamy as Leo, but that’s still a damn sharp suit.

The bulletproof wolf The Wolf of Wall Street might have seemed like an over-the-top fictionalized Hollywood tale of power, greed and Wall Street fraud, but it was actually based on Jordon Belfort’s best-selling memoir. Belfort really was making $50 million a year in his mid-twenties, with more than 1,000 stockbrokers working for him—and he really did go to prison for 22 months for fraud. But after prison, Belfort reinvented himself as a motivational speaker. No singing princesses The Boxtrolls With the excellent films Coraline, ParaNorman, and now The Boxtrolls, the stop-motion animation studio Laika has firmly established itself as the by Daniel Barnes smartest and therefore best purveyor of animated entertainment working today. It certainly helps their case that Pixar has become obsessed with sequels, that Pixar’s parent company Disney still holds a fetish for singing princesses, and that DreamWorks Animation mostly produces mediocrities.

A much larger factor in Laika’s preeminence, however, is the consistency of the three features that its produced over the last five years. All three films have promoted a visually compelling house style and a commendably weird tone while still maintaining individual identities.

Directed by Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi and adapted from the Alan Snow novel Here Be Monsters! by Irena Brignull and Adam Pava, The Boxtrolls moves beyond the paranormal fixations of its Laika predecessors, effortlessly creating a unique fantasy world that is equal parts tradition and irreverence.

The setting here is the pre-industrial metropolis of Cheesebridge, a seaside city whose streets spiral around the sides and top of a drooping mountain. Cheesebridge is designed as an “olde world” European city of vague descent, with dollops of steampunk added for flavor. As the film opens, Cheesebridge is overrun by the Boxtrolls, a species of frittering and jabbering underground creatures who wear boxes over their torsos and pilfer from the humans at night.

When one Boxtroll absconds with a human baby, a sneering, self-styled exterminator named Archibald Snatcher offers to rid Cheesebridge of the creatures in exchange for an upgrade in his social status. The Boxtrolls, who turn out to be crafty builders rather than mere burglars, take the baby into their underground lair and raise him as one of their own.

Fast-forward a decade, and the baby has become a box-clad young man named Eggs, a precocious child who has grown up unaware of his human nature, self-identifying as a Boxtroll even though he lacks their green skin

and inherent ability to retract into a cardboard shell. When Eggs is finally allowed to go scavenging, he sees and is seen by a human for the first time, which unwittingly allows Snatcher’s extermination efforts to bear fruit.

One of the great strengths of The Boxtrolls is its ability to invest every character with personality and humanity, even a literal cartoon villain and his gang of doofy henchmen. Snatcher is clearly an evil slimeball gargoyle, but his motives and obsessions, his need to transcend himself and be accepted into a higher class of society, are pathetic and weak and all-too-human.

On a similar note, the wry, self-aware running commentary from two of Snatcher’s thugs is to be expected by this point, but a neat wrinkle is their investigation into the “duality of good and evil”—they can’t tell if they’re good guys or the bad guys.

Even more impressive is that, unlike a lot of the characterizations in Disney/Pixar productions, that personality is not directly seeped from the already-established personalities of its voice actors. Ben Kingsley voices Snatcher, and the henchmen are voiced by Nick Frost and Richard Ayoade (with Tracy Morgan as a cackling nihilist named Mr. Gristle). They’re all brilliant, aiding the animators in creating rich characters that fit seamlessly into the story.

All this and I haven’t even mentioned my two favorite characters: Lord-Portley Rind (voiced by Jared Harris), the town scion and leader of the “White Hat” upper class, and his punk young daughter, Winnie. Lord Portley-Rind is the most cheeseobsessed buffoon in a town filled with them, more interested in creating a gigantic wheel of brie than in building a new children’s hospital.

One of the great strengths of The Boxtrolls is its ability to invest every character with personality and humanity.

Even more fun is Winnie (voiced by Elle Fanning), a worthy successor to Coraline in Laika’s hall of complex, no-bullshit child heroines. Winnie becomes an ally to Eggs as he attempts to save his Boxtroll brethren and foil Snatcher’s evil plans, but she has a stronger interest in justice that has nothing to do with helping Eggs realize his destiny. Her red-faced, foot-stamping impatience with the fools of Cheesebridge is not seen as a fault, but as indicative of an immense strength of character. Winnie is not bossy—she has executive leadership skills. Ω

The title refers to the odds against Mine That Bird, the 2-year-old gelding that won a surprise victory in the 2009 Kentucky Derby, and the movie tells us how he got to the winner’s circle with owners Mark Allen (Christian Kane) and Leonard Blach (William Devane), trainer Chip Woolley (Skeet Ulrich) and jockey Calvin Borel (playing himself). Everybody loves a good sports movie where the underdog comes from behind, and director Jim Wilson and his co-writer Faith Conroy don’t blow it. They lay it on a little thick, perhaps, in presenting all these New Mexico cowboys as fish out of water among the snooty racing aristocrats of Churchill Downs, but it keeps things amusing while we wait for the big race. Madelyn Deutch adds spice as Ulrich’s spunky assistant—plus a touch of beauty to complement the horses. J.L.

A band of explorers, led by a scholar specializing in the history of alchemy (Perdita Weeks) and guided by a Parisian street hustler (François Civil) ventures into the catacombs under the streets of Paris in search of the philosopher’s stone, that mystical rock that can turn base metals to gold.

Then all hell breaks loose—literally. Or apparently? Frankly, it’s hard to tell. The script by director John Erick Dowdle and his brother Drew is so murky, and the brothers’ grip on their narrative is so shaky. Even murkier and shakier is Léo Hinstin’s cinematography, recycling yet again the insufferable cliché of found video footage. (Dear God, will we never be rid of The Blair Witch Project?) The movie boasts little suspense, few scares, and no stars—only a gang of hungry unknowns eager to be in a hit. J.L.

Boyhood

A seemingly limitless stream of pure empathy runs through Richard Linklater’s transcendental movie event/social experiment/life-affirming headtrip Boyhood.

At the end of the film’s first seamlessly interwoven vignette, 6-year-old Mason (Ellar Coltrane, literally growing up on camera) and his family are moving away from their sleepy Texas town. As the car drives off, Mason’s playmate speeds up on his bike for one last glimpse, barely visible through the tall grasses of fading memory. This is the first of many forgettable friends who will flit in and out of Mason’s young life. Late in the film, when Mason is a college-bound teenager, an adult offers that post-adolescence is “where you find your people,” and Mason can barely refrain from rolling his eyes. The miracle of Boyhood is that we empathize with everyone in this scenario, even with the nameless and forgotten playmate starring in his own alternate-universe movie life. D.B.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them

A husband and wife (James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain) separate after a family tragedy. The subtitle tells us that this is the third part of a trilogy. The first two, Her and Him, each told from the appropriate perspective, are set for release in October. (Whether Them was edited down from the other two is unclear.) Anyhow, writer-director Ned Benson has a writer’s instincts, but not an editor’s.

He smothers us in oblique details, never saying plainly what he prefers to suggest, and he doesn’t know when enough is enough. He shows us nothing in 122 minutes that wouldn’t have been just as clear at 90 or 100. The movie is sluggish, even stagnant, but with an appealing naturalism and first-rate performances from a pedigreed cast (including, besides the stars, William Hurt, Ciarán Hinds, Isabelle Huppert, Viola Davis and Bill Hader). This is Where I Leave You

Four adult children (Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Corey Stoll, Adam Driver) gather with their mother (Jane Fonda) to sit shiva for their deceased father, where family chickens come home to roost. The movie is written by Jonathan Tropper (from his novel) and directed by the on-again-off-again Shawn Levy. This time Levy is on; at least, he has a strong script and a fine cast—there is also Kathryn Hahn as Stoll’s wife, Rose Byrne and Timothy Olyphant as old flames of Bateman and Fey, and Connie Britton as Driver’s therapist/girlfriend—and Levy doesn’t muff it, establishing a rhythm that keeps the often-outlandish action within the recognizable bounds of family squabbling.

In a well-matched ensemble of equals, Fey especially shines, revealing the fine actress underneath the funny lady from Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock. J.L.

aerts). Written by Dennis Lehane (adapting his own short story) and tautly directed by Michaël R. Roskam, the movie is interestingly unpleasant. It’s a tense and unsettling, but extremely well-acted and compelling, picture of down-and-almost-outers trying to get by, honestly or otherwise. As a cop investigating an earlier robbery at the bar, John Ortiz has the best line in the movie (which I wouldn’t dare spoil). J.L.

If I Stay

A talented teenage cellist (Chloë Grace Moretz) lies in a coma after an auto accident kills her family. She has an out-of-body experience, reliving her past and her budding romance with a local rock star (Jamie Blackley) while deciding whether she wants to live or die. Adapted

by Shauna Cross from Gayle Forman’s novel and directed by R.J. Cutler, the movie (like the book) uses the out-of-body gimmick to inject suspense and a supernatural charge into what would otherwise be a pretty bland and unexceptional story. But only churlish folks will pick nits: The movie is an efficient and satisfying teen tear-jerker, well-acted by beautiful people wearing beautiful clothes and speaking sensitive thoughts. Joshua Leonard and Mireille Enos play Moretz’s loving parents, Stacy Keach her distraught grandfather. J.L.

The Maze Runner

A teenager (Dylan O’Brien) finds himself among a group of boys in a wilderness area enclosed by high walls and a vast maze, with no knowledge of who he is or how he got there. The script (by Noah Oppenheim, Grant Pierce Myers and T.S. Nowlin, from James Dashner’s novel) is a mash-up of The Hunger Games, Lord of the Flies and TV’s Lost, with a dollop of The Secret Garden and just a dash of King Kong. The cast features a band of handsome young unknowns, plus one token pretty girl (Kaya Scodelario) and a walk-through star cameo (Patricia Clarkson). Director Wes Ball, in his first feature, doesn’t build much suspense—but then, this nonsensical story would defeat Steven Spielberg. The last line threatens us with “Part Two,” and Dashner has in fact written two sequels and a prequel. Let us pray for strength. J.L.

No Good Deed

With Ray Rice dominating headlines in recent weeks, this may not seem like the right time to release No Good Deed, a film that grinds themes of violence against and control over women into low-rent genre mush. But the power of exploitation films

is that they can connect more directly and more viscerally with our cultural night terrors, and a lot resonates in this story of an escaped sociopath (Idris Elba) who cons his way into the home of a married woman (Taraji P. Henson). The genuine menace of Elba’s seductive psychopath appears to be an expression of the seething contempt that Henson’s wealthy husband has for her, and a powerful connection is made between psychological manipulation and physical abuse. However, the time is never right for the sort of cheap scares that take over in the final act, or for the maelstrom of absurd and implausible behavior that whirls throughout. D.B.

There is a moment early in Kevin Smith’s Tusk during which the millennial hellspawn podcaster/prey played by Justin Long admires a tubular fossil, and is informed

by Michael Parks’ wheelchair-bound, Canadian psycho that he is holding the penis bone of a walrus. This launches the old man into a story about his glorious life with a walrus during WWII, setting up the bizarre, one-sentence idea that is this wretched film’s only selling point: a man who gets turned into a walrus. It seemed fairly certain that the penis bone would come back into play at some point, and that the playground provocateur Smith might actually get to some disturbing places. Alas, it was just another of the pointless, punchline-less penis jokes that Smith, in lieu of the ability to shape scenes, proudly claims as his cinematic legacy.

Like most of Smith’s films, Tusk is all dick and no balls. D.B.

Retired New York cop Matt Scudder (Liam Neeson) investigates the kidnapping, murder and dismemberment of a drug trafficker’s wife, finding that the culprits have done this kind of thrill-killing before—and plan to do so again. Writer-director Scott Frank (adapting Lawrence Block’s novel), devotes less care and effort to clarifying his complex plot than to portraying the crimes in near snuffporn detail, putting a disturbing, grisly edge on a story that was hardly for the squeamish to begin with. With Neeson on hard-boiled cruise control as Scudder (previously played by Jeff Bridges in 1986’s 8 Million Ways to Die), the picture plays like an extra-rough installment in Neeson’s Taken franchise: Taken, Tortured and Butchered. Neeson gets good support from Brian “Astro” Bradley as his streetwise confederate. J.L.

How Sacramento’s Cave Women sized down, grew up and got even better

College graduations usually signal huge life changes.

Friends find jobs in new cities. They fly across the country for graduate school, never to be by Janelle Bitker heard from again.

For young bands, it’s a common story as j a ne l l e b @ well. But Cave Women, the local all-lady jazzy ne w s re v i e w . c o m pop group, is determined to stick together— despite now being geographically far apart.

“We’re all really happy to continue to make original music and share it,” says bassist Casey Lipka. “Life will shift, but we’re still going to try to make things work.”

Second Chances shows off Cave Women’s more realized, developed sound. It’s cohesive—songs on the band’s debut often went in radically different directions—and leans more toward pop. Lush vocal harmonies are still prominent but carry a stronger, mature depth.

The five songs showcase more texture and assurance. Ultimately, Cave Women no longer sounds like a new band trying to nail down its identity.

Despite its new focus, the band still draws from disparate influences—even more influences were thrown into the pot this time around.

Cave Women’s self-titled debut took on elements of jazz, classical, folk, a cappella, gypsy, Brazilian and African music.

Those styles are still evident in Second Chances, but so are the contemporary artists that Cave Women’s members love listening to daily: electronic-music producer James Blake, synthpop band Little Dragon, experimental art project Tune-Yards.

But those influences seep their way into songwriting in unintended ways. Band members hadn’t formally decided on pop song structures, for example.

“Without thinking, we started writing more similarly,” Messick says. “It’s weird.”

For Lipka, that subconscious connection isn’t weird at all—it’s natural.

“I think it makes sense that after three years of being together, you get an idea of the different writing styles,” Lipka says. “We all became closer and influenced each other.”

The five original members of Cave Women formed the band in 2011. Some were studying music at Sacramento State University; others were recent graduates. But they frequented the same jazz-based open mics around town and each had lengthy resumes boasting experience with other bands, ensembles and orchestras.

Just one year later, they released a fulllength album and garnered excellent press from nearly every local media outlet possible.

Momentum was strong, but gigs slowly became infrequent.

Life presented changes. Those who were still studying at Sacramento State eventually finished classwork. Drummer Vanessa Cruz quietly left the band last year, relocating to New York. Flutist Kim Davis moved to Long Beach to start graduate school.

These days, Emily Messick, who plays piano and accordion, is gearing up for a sixmonth internship in Los Angeles for music therapy. Meanwhile, Lipka and guitarist Alicyn Yaffee are continuing their music careers in Sacramento.

Where does that leave the now four-woman band? Apparently readying to release a new EP and launch a tour. The album, aptly named Second Chances, dropped September 24.

Cave Women no longer sounds like a new band trying to nail down its identity.

And with Cave Women’s jazz roots, there’s just more regular, spontaneous writing to observe and learn from. With improvisational jazz, compositions are created on the spot.

Existing songs can still sound fresh with each live rendition.

“Even if there’s not a solo section, it’s always a little different,” Yaffee says. “We listen to each other and build off each other every time.” Ω

Brazil’s Bob Dylan: I wish I spoke Portuguese. Mostly because I so wanted to understand Caetano Veloso’s lyrics—even more so his jokes—at his Mondavi Center performance last Thursday night.

Veloso is a household name in Brazil. He’s a founder of Tropicália, an artistic movement in the late ’60s that the militant government really didn’t like. Veloso fused traditional Brazilian sounds with African rhythms and American rock ’n’ roll. His lefty politics seeped into songs, sending him first to prison and then into exile.

Obviously, he returned and continued his rise to international superstardom. Now at 72, he’s a winner of nine Latin Grammy awards.

He opened his recent Davis show with “A Bossa Nova É Foda,” a rocking, totally not-Bossa Nova track off his 49th album, Abraçaço, which was released in the United States earlier this spring. It quickly set the tone and corrected anyone who thought this would just be a “The Girl from Ipanema” kind of night.

Veloso performed for nearly two hours nonstop with Banda Cê, a trio of young talents with whom he’s been collaborating since 2006. Abraçaço is their last record together, and they played it with breaks for some of Veloso’s earlier, iconic work—the upbeat samba “Escapulário” from ’75 was particularly memorable.

Some moments were clearly somber. Others clearly sensual. At one point, Veloso slowly unbuttoned his shirt and shimmied about. He frequently left his mic to strut across the foot of the stage, pausing so everyone could get a good look at him. He put on bemused, playful, sassy faces throughout and bantered with the audience—again, I wish I understood.

But a contingent of Portuguese speakers clued the rest of us in, roaring with laughter again and again.

He paused just once: “A few of you must not speak Portuguese, but I have very little to say. Just thank you.”

His three-song encore began with a breathtaking Spanish song, “Tonada de Luna Llena,” performed a capella with a piercing falsetto. It ended with seven young women deciding it’d be fun to rush the stage, to quickly be joined by an all-ages sea of 60 dancers. The young revolutionary is very much alive.

as Wildlight, a beautiful thing to witness live as Nereo’s vocals soar over the Ambassador’s downtempo, indie beats.

But they’re forces separately, too.

Nereo’s the sort of singer who embodies her music, with gorgeous, graceful movements. She shares dreamy images of sacred mountains, talking moons and drying rivers. As a solo artist, she uses live-looping to create harmonies against folk-electronica soundscapes.

The Polish Ambassador’s trademark, indie EDM is always groovy, funky and sunny, but his most recent record Pushing Through The Pavement is the most eclectic yet: soul, hip-hop, jazz, world beats,

haunting Indian chants.

They’re kicking off a tour in the Ambassador’s hometown of Nevada City. At the Miners Foundry Cultural Center (325 Spring Street) on Sunday, September 28, The Polish Ambassador, Nereo, Wildlight and conscious hip-hop artist Mr. Lif are all slated to perform. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets start at $20.

But it’s not just a standard tour.

Being Burning Man regulars and the type of artists who give away their music for free and whatnot, it’s going to be a Permaculture Action Tour. At every show, there will be educational elements—videos, spoken word—and in some cities audiences will be encouraged to help with a project the following day. For example, in Denver they’ll create a community garden out of an abandoned piece of land.

The Nevada City show doubles as a benefit for Common Vision, a Northern California-based group that plants orchards in public schools.

“People are attending concerts and festivals by the tens of thousands yet it is rare to see this energy mobilizing for a greater cause,” the Ambassador wrote for his crowdfunding campaign, which raised nearly $45,000.

“Can impact and celebration co-exist in the same environment?

Can community work parties and projects culminate in ecstatic dance party celebrations? Can we remember that festival culture all began with harvests where people busted their ass for a week[?]”

He calls it an experiment, but it sounds like a challenge.

Celebrating 40 years together creating music that knows no borders, the five members of Hiroshima aren’t afraid to mix some JAZZ New Orleans-style jazz with a Latin beat and June Kuramoto’s signature koto playing on songs like “Red Beans and Rice.” Breaking ground in many areas, Hiroshima was the first Asian-American act to play the Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival, and it released its 2013 album, J-Town Beat, under its own label. Unlike other fusion bands, Hiroshima doesn’t try to blend the varied sounds from which it draws.

It plays jazz with taiko, koto, keyboards, sax, flute, drums and bass to create a sound that belongs only to Hiroshima. 1013 K Street, www.hiroshimamusic.com.

Two Sheds started on a simple dare: Johnny Gutenberger of the band Far wanted his wife, Caitlin, to write some songs.

She did, and they eventually got recorded and formed the beginning of Two Sheds.

More recordings followed, but with Caitlin working with Rogue Wave frontman Zach Rogue’s side project Release the Sunbird, Two Sheds wasn’t exactly a priority.

That changed when the duo moved to Los Angeles two years ago, nabbed a drummer and spread the gospel of its soulful, slightly INDIE ROCK folky indie rock. The band’s polishing off a new record, and it’s dreamy, ambient and positively delightful. 1815 19th Street, www.ilovetwosheds.com.

Old Ironsides, 9 p.m., $10

Last week, I received a text from a friend who was watching Con Brio open for Fishbone.

He wrote that frontman Ziek McCarter was “James Brown Jr.” Indeed, the energetic, young singer’s fancy footwork has been frequently compared to JB. The dynamic San FUNK/SOUL Francisco band has a sound that blends dirty funk, blues and psychedelic soul. In early August, CB played an early Sunday set at Guitarfish Music Festival, on the final day of a music-filled weekend. The zombified revelers who had gone deep into the night (including this writer) were hit by the band’s powerful grooves like a strong cup of coffee. Jem & Scout, a power-pop three-piece that embodies the rock ’n’ roll stylings of ’90s music, is one of many bands featured during Old Ironsides’ month-long 80th-anniversary celebration. J&S’s appearance is fitting, because the bar began incorporating live music into the mix during the ’90s, forgoing a fireplace for an actual stage and becoming a haven for Sacramento-area bands.

This show—also featuring the Brodys and Honeyspot—is the first of a two-part “celebration month finale” for the venue, ROCK which opened in 1934. Part two is Saturday, September 27, with Tattooed Love Dogs, Ancient Sons and more. 1901 10th Street, www.facebook.com/ jemandscout.

Petty himself may be on a national tour right now, but Sacramentans can catch the next best thing with San Francisco cover band Petty Theft. The Boardwalk, 7:30 p.m., $15-$18

Dank Ocean is a group of college-aged Davis jazz musicians that has funk down every bit as much as jazz—not to mention some sleek Latin beats. It’s reminiscent of the ’70s, when jazz and funk players were feeding off each other—eventually leading to fusion. Unlike most of the ’70s jazz-fusion acts, Dank Ocean does not have an electric guitar in the group.

It just rocks with some drums, percussion, a Rhodes organ (which really cooks) and JAZZ some horns. The band has a loose, funky feel, plays with a lot of variety and nuance, and its individual members can solo well and write some cool arrangements. 228 G Street, www.facebook.com/ dankoceanband.

Arizona’s Authority Zero hits harder than its two-tone contemporaries, suggesting Bad Brain’s hardcore-and-reggae stylistic dichotomy more than Sublime’s ska-punk gumbo. Frontman Jason DeVore deeply recalls REGGAE/PUNK Pennywise’s Jim Lindberg on impassioned punk anthems and is versatile enough to turn on a dime for the toasts and hard-skanking raps. Though AZ never really pushed the commercial needle, its talent, time on major labels and heavy touring regime have earned the group a dedicated cult following.

Legalize it right I saw your cover story last week. How was your trip? Do you think Oregon, Alaska and Washington, D.C., will legalize weed this year?

—Beck Tuskool It was great! Except for a little trouble. (I came down with The Quinsy. Look it up. All hail antibiotics!) I had a great time at the West Coast hemp fests. I even got to meet David Grisman again. Cool beans.

I also got to talk to a bunch of people on the BEALUM West Coast about current conditions. When I

by NGAIO was in Portland for the International Cannabis Business Conference, I talked to one of my homies that has been an activist for more than 10 years a s k420 @ ne wsreview.c om and worked on the 2012 Oregon legalization campaign. I can’t tell you his name, because he just got a job working for someone in Salem, but he is ’13 a good friend and a trusted source. Our conversation wasn’t even about specific policy, anyway.

Here’s the gist: It’s not over. The dominoes are falling. Marijuana legalization is on the ballot in Alaska. Philadelphia just voted to decriminalize marijuana possession. It looks like Washington, D.C., will vote on legalizing marijuana this November, and the measure is ahead 2-to-1 in polls of likely voters.

Should black Hell yes.

We are making more people ask for progress than ever before, “weedparations”? but like my friend reminded me: “Battles never stay won and points never stay proven.” We can’t get complacent. Oregon isn’t a done deal. Current polls show support at 51 percent, and although opposition is only 41 percent, there are more than enough undecided voters that this thing could swing either way. So all you folks with friends living in Oregon, call them and remind them about the importance of legalizing weed. The Oregon measure is my favorite one so far.

Another thing we talked about is having some social consciousness. Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, had this to say about the “Green Rush”: “Here are white men poised to run big marijuana businesses, dreaming of cashing in big—big Ngaio Bealum is a Sacramento money, big businesses selling weed—after 40 years comedian, activist of impoverished black kids getting prison time for and marijuana expert. selling weed, and their families and futures destroyed.

The you-ness part of you For the past five months—when he’s not teaching at one of seven or eight yoga studios in Sacramento or Santa Barbara (where he now splits his time)—James Kapicka has been planning Transcendence, a festival which takes place October 3 through 6 at Camp Pollock. Its activities are best divided into four categories called “pillars of intention,” said Kapicka on a recent morning, over a cup of tea.

They’re listed on the festival website as: Community Through Connection; Nature, Ecology & Conservation; Health, Consciousness, and Well being; and Art, Music, & Creative Expression. Because this is the first Transcendence festival, there’s no way of knowing exactly what it’ll be like, but the way Kapicka describes it, it may turn out to be something like combining a yoga festival, a community gathering, Burning Man and a traditional music festival.

“Namaste.” What does that mean, and do people actually use it outside of a yoga class?

Some of them do. It’s a pretty traditional hello and goodbye in India. But more literally, it’s usually translated to “the divine light in me bows to the divine light in you.”

It’s recognition that the divine in me or the spirit in me and the spirit in you are the same thing. So you’re acknowledging the sameness in one another, I guess.

How’d you go from teaching yoga to executive producing a festival?

I started going to festivals when I was 19, I think—reggae festivals to begin with. The co-producer for this event is a good friend of mine who I met in Thailand and we went to Burning Man a couple times. And he started an event-production company in Santa Barbara called Poi Zen Production. And so I had the idea of putting on a yoga festival in Sacramento for about five years, and we started collaborating and talking about what it would actually look like, and it kind of surfaced that for both of us, we would rather see it be a transformational gathering, and have a lot more components—including ecology and wellness—than something so narrow. So that’s what it’s evolved into.

You’re partnering with Sol Collective on something called Kindred Patch.

What’s that?

It’s our family camp. But it’s not children’s programming, it’s family—meaning if grandma’s with a 5-year-old kid and she wants to take the yoga class or the painting class or the drum workshop, it’s all-ages activities and it’s all within the same area.

So families can come and stay in this area if they want, or they can take their kid and go |

to the live stage and dance and go get food.

But it’s meant to be kind of like a complete village within a village. They have their own medical area, their own water, so they’re fully comprehensive. Sol Collective is bringing aesthetics. They’re bringing workshops.

They’re bringing a lot.

Are lots of local yoga studios, musicians and artists participating, too?

Sacramento’s bringing its own authenticity to it. The “community and the connection” pillar means supporting this community by trying to bring in teachers and artists and musicians from locally first. We have people from all over the festival circuit, but we’re trying to bring people from Sacramento and Davis, Placerville and Grass Valley together, so people can actually go connect with a local teacher they can go take a class with, rather than a rock-star teacher from Los Angeles. So basically trying to integrate because a lot of the momentum for me came from seeing all these compartmentalized little communities, and being like, “These people need to come together.” They’re all working with movement and creative expression and health and there’s so much overlap here, but it’s easy to be stuck in these little communities.

What kind of crowd do you expect to draw?

Burners, people into yoga, music fans?

From the core internally, what I had good reach into was the yoga and wellness community. And then we’re bringing in |

artists and musicians that people might come to the event from out of town to see.

Ideally, people are having new experiences.

They just get to do different dance classes, workshops, yoga—things that they haven’t been exposed to. Integration is a big push, like giving people first-time, liberating, creative experiences. So, there’s a lot of interactive stuff?

That’s something that regular festival attendees understand; that’s the culture being created right now. Like some of these events—Coachella or Bonnaroo or Electric Daisy Carnival—they’re events where you go pay a premium price and you are entertained, you witness. Versus something like Burning Man which is very participant-driven, and that’s the culture that’s been brought into these transformational gatherings.

Bring your “you-ness.” We want you to be yourself, and some of that is we have people painting themselves up like mimes and doing circus performances—not on a stage, but just as they walk around and interact with people because they want to, you know? Ω The Transcendence festival happens October 3 through October 6 at Camp Pollock, 467 Del Paso Boulevard. Single-day tickets for adults cost $66, a three-day pass costs $159, a youth three-day pass costs $66, and kids 12 and younger can attend for free.
