The Way We Worked

Protecting the President

This 1961 photograph shows White House Police Officer Sherwood Dix Rodman standing guard on the East Wing Lawn of the White House.

The White House Police Force was formed in 1922 to protect the White House and the President of the United States. It became part of the Secret Service in 1930, was renamed the Executive Protective Service in 1970, and then in 1977 became the Uniformed Division of the Secret Service.

Today, the division is tasked with protecting the White House grounds and foreign diplomatic missions in the Washington, DC, metro area.
