Software approach to schoolyard ills A MORNINGTON business has developed an innovative software program to track school–based injury and illness and is trialling the program at five schools in the region. Businessman and former nurse, Eddie Dunn, said he came up with the software idea about four years ago when his daughter suffered a broken arm at school. “At the time I wondered how I could help, so my business partner and I spent about three years developing a program that would provide schools with contemporary advice and guidelines on health care, he said. The software tracks and collects “live data and has already proved its success. Mr Dunn’s company, Healthcare Resources for Schools, said the program provided up-todate guidelines for school healthcare providers and allowed schools to track injuries and develop appropriate healthcare policies. “One of our recent success stories involves a student whose asthma incidents were tracked and the data passed on to the relevant GP so that the student’s asthma action plan could be revised and updated, he said. “When you can look at the live data and drill down to individual students, schools and health providers can make decisions on resourcing and provide relevant healthcare. The school has also taken a novel approach to raising money for a gymnasium. “Opportunity knocks for gym, Page 14

when this will occur. The 44-year-old club has never had a permanent home, and was nicknamed by a former president the “gypsies of the peninsula". “We have been moved around from Dallas Brooks Park, Mornington Park, Osborne Primary School, Padua College, and our most recent home at Mace Oval, Ms Henry said.

“We have been competing for the past 12 seasons at Mace Oval in Mt Martha. It was a temporary move at the time apparently, and it seems we've been forgotten. “We've completely outgrown Mace – it only allows for a 250 metre track into which we have to cram all the field events. It is an OH and S nightmare some days. We have no club rooms –

we never have – just three shipping containers and a council-built toilet block. In this Olympics year, the club is anticipating higher registration numbers than in previous years. “If we have to compete there again this coming season, we will be operating beyond capacity, Ms Henry said.
